Hi all. Was wondering if anyone out there is having GPS issues on 4.0.3?
I did the update just before I left home to go to Indonesia and now I'm here the GPS won't get a lock particularly when using google maps. Says it has sattelites in range but even with 4 or 6 won't get a lock. However did manage to get a lock a couple of nights ago using SkEye astronomy program.
Any feedback appreciated.
I experienced the sameproblem with Nexus S locking on GPS days ago. Usually when I'm in Italy, I'm always connected to internet and GPS lock very fast, helped by the network.
But days Iago I went to London, with pre-cached map of the city and in 3 days the phone NEVER locked on the GPS system unless a wireless connection. All it said was "Trying to get current position..." and after a few seconds "Impossible to get the current position. Retry later".
While trying to get the position on googlemap in the status bar I noticed the empty GPS-circle never started to blink...
Exactly the same thing happened to my brother device (also a 4.0.3 Nexus S).
What worked for me.
So Im using the Galaxy s2.
Leaked ics.
Gps bug.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/gps-doctor/com.epekware.gpsdoctor
It said it worked and now maps finds me as does 'places'.
Facebook now gives me places nearby but still says not found.
I zoomed in on maps and its pretty much got me to within a few feet. So it has to be gps. Towers gets you w/in a few states. (jk)
I have the same issue. With ICS my phone can't get a GPS lock.
I'm back on GB though.
Ive been meaning to come and debunk my own thread.
False alert everyone. It doesnt work. When I was on wifi it took my info from there and 'injected' it. For whatever reason maps etc took that as well enough.
On 3g it would seem to only triangulate my position and get it right to within hundreds of yards.
However I hope that the thread helps developers develop a bug fix. I saw qbking post a new ics vid today so maybe the latest leak is gps corrected. Well see.
flash a stock GB rom, Pete's for instance. Lock on to GPS in Maps. I use GPS test from Market also and Clear and update GPS with app. Reboot, then Flash ICS rom and benefit
GPS Test worked for me
Thanks for that. I had the same issue after updating to ICS - Glympse couldn't find where I was, Maps wouldn't use GPS, etc.
I installed GPS Test by Chartcross Limited (I haven't posted enough to post links, so I've replaced the forward slashes with back slashes "https:\\play.google.com\store\apps\details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5jaGFydGNyb3NzLmdwc3Rlc3QiXQ..").

All I had to do was to use the menu to get to Settings, and use the buttons at the top of the settings to Clear AGPS and Update AGPS (I don't know whether both of these were necessary), and everything started working. I didn't need to reboot.

Is anyone else getting weird leaps in GPS? Mostly it's very reliable, but last week I was in South Kensington (London) but GoogleMaps, TrackMe and TomTom all placed me mid-English Channel. Looking at my trackme trips, I found that I spent a few moments in Tunisia the week before, and you will be very impressed by my 15 minute cycle this morning ....

If you search this forum on GPS, you'll find some stuff, like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2509292&postcount=3

I'm not talking about a few metres or a couple of hundred metres - I'm getting anomalous gps readings that are hundreds or even thousands of kilometres from my actual location.
These seem to be happening more and more frequently ....
I have had something similar - on Saturday (and also in the London area), for a few minutes TomTom told me that I was travelling at over 300mph. Now I know that the white van that I had hired for the day is much faster than my 911, but not that much faster!
I have also had a much weaker signal than usual recently - normally TomTom shows 4 or 5 bars, but over the last few weeks it has often been at 1 or 2 bars.
I had assumed that there were some atmospheric causes at play, but would be interested in any other explanations.
I've noticed the GPS in my Cruise acts up when 3rd party media players are running, mainly Resco Radio (when it's streaming, I frequently drop all GPS connections--when I press the top button to blank the screen, Resco's audio mutes when the amber GPS LED blinks, then comes on when it goes out... on--off--on--off, I have to leave the screen on to make it work) and Conduits Pocket Player (the device spontaneously reboots when the Player & GPS are both active). Both the players work without issue if GPS isn't being used.
When WMP or the HTC media player are running with GPS active, everything seems to 'get along' better.
I'm hoping this, and other little annoyances with the device clear up when 6.1 is released -- probably a good idea, and less frustrating, to hold off on doing to much troubleshooting until then...
I experienced something similar. I had the phone with me on a boat to check the top speed of the boat. I showed the boat to be traveling at nearly 200 km/h which is far to fast. So I loaded google maps and it placed me in a whole different country. A soft reset solved the problem.
This has not happened before, but I have experienced TomTom getting a hiccup when driving a few times. Suddenly the whole map turns upside down and it starts screaming about me having to do a u-turn as soon as possible. But after a few seconds it resolves again. This does not happen when in a town and the signal is bad. It can just as well happen with good line of sight and a good signal.
Perhaps the US is tampering with the GPS signals because of the problems in Georgia?

Now that I call a conspiracy theory...
My GPS has acted strangely, but in far smaller proportions... some 100 m or about so. Mind you, I'm using iGO...
My colleague's Polaris has shown the same behaviour, sudden displacements. Most of the time between 10 and 100 km.
Mine does that too. I'm normally doing 250 mph in the irish sea!! Soft reset fixes it though.
Hey I like to turn Google location services off to conserve battery but this shouldn't affect the ability to use Google maps shouldn't it? With it unchecked, it won't find my location! Pictures attached. This happens on all jb roms I've tried

I would not expect to see that message unless you uncheck both:
Google Location Service
and
GPS Satellites
Anyone else?
Go under gps source and choose internal gps

Did that already. I have gps on and internal gps. The thing is, shouldn't it locate me either way by like triangulation or whatev just through my data connection? Anyways even with gps on I get this message
Scratch that: with gps on I get location unavailable. When I turn on location services, gps instalocks

When you turn on location services that's when it uses data or wifi to connect. Your GPS should still get your location without it. Sounds to me like you have some GPS issues. I'd get GPS aids from market and see if your GPS is actually working or not. There are other good GPS test apps that one is just my personal choice.
Gps instalocks when I turn on the services. I already use that gps test and I get like 1 or 2 locks without services and 10+ with

Like I said something is wrong with your GPS setup. I just locked 12 of 22 sats in 4 seconds to an accuracy of 3ft WITHOUT location services. If you can't get a lock with just GPS something is wrong.
Hmm it seems as though I'm seeing the same thing. GPS turned on, location services turned off. GPS aids tells me I have 22 sats in view but nothing is being locked on to. After a while I went back and turned services on, reopened aids and locked on to about 4 sats in a few seconds (the "seconds" remained at 0 the whole time? I'm new to GPS aids; just dl'ed right now).

Hi,
My GPS used to be locked within a second on stock ICS.
Now, I'm on Sky Jelly Bean, and I notice that it takes a long time to have GPS locked, and its accuracy is far from what we consider 'accurate'.
So is there a way to fix these GPS issues on Jelly Bean?
Thank you.

Install the AGPS patch in the dev section. It's never failed for me on any ROM I've used it on.

I just installed [Rom]Sky-JellyBean-4.1.2) Update 10.3 ((Base T10-(10/26/12)) GS3-Touchwiz--Vs--CM 10, and GPS wasnt locking either.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563226
I downloaded the Google Specific 3.1 below, and GPS immediately locked:

Hope it works for you too.

Gavin

Actually, I spoke too soon. It looks like the patch was working since it immediately locked on. I went out for a drive and used the NAV, and initially it was working, but after a few minutes it began to drop out and report "GPS Signal Lost"...
From your screenshot, it looks like you can see at least 12 satellites with fairly decent signal.
I am using a different app, and mine seem to vary between 0, 2, 5, and 7... Constantly changing. Wish mine looked like yours.
I've already wiped everything, and going back to stock using both Kies and Odin methods, but still have the same issue.
Read somewhere to wipe the external SD and eemc, so going to try that now.
Hopefully its not the phone.
What app is that screenshot from? Want to try it.
Thanks!
It's called "GPS Test". Pretty simple app.

I am not able to find a correct location with GMaps, it shows a approximate location as you can see in the screenshot, with a very large error radius, maybe a few km. I tested my GPS with GPS test and I'm able to lock up to 8 satellites. Why can't Maps find my location with GPS and uses instead the network antennas?
Is this normal behaviour?
P.S I was outside while testing and my GPS was on of course, I could see the GPS sign trying to find signal. If I turn off Google location service Maps doesn't finf my location, while GPS test says it's workink ok.

You might want to try GPS fix. It's an application that helps lock on to you're exact location. When I used it it actually pin pointed my exact address from there use the GPS after fix. It worked for me, hopefully it also will work for you. You can find GPS fix in the market. It takes awhile to lock in but it does work. At least it does for me. You should give it a try. Best of luck

Thanks man that works. Very strange though. Am I supposed to do this every time I use GPS, cause it takes at least 5 min? If I change location do I have to do it again?

After rooting and switching from stock to Cyanogenmod nighties (10.1), I've noticed that the GPS does not work properly. After some time will acquire the signal, but instants after will display the large circle around and would just stop updating the position (while driving).
I'm sure it's an issue with Cyanogenmod, because my friend has the HTC Evo LTE and his GPS was working great. After switching to Cyanogenmod he has the same issue. The same weird behavior with the signal.
I should also mention that if I press the power button and turn off the screen and leave it for at least 3-4 seconds and then press the power button, the Map (Google Navigation) will be updated and GPS will show my current location. However, just after a few seconds will act weird again.
Anyone has any suggestion?
I use the GPS casually, so I'm not sure if I should switch back to stock or keep Cyanogenmod.
Thanks.
Nobody?
Every time I use navigation... I get "GPS Signal Lost" 2-3 times. Hate it.

It used to work FLAWLESSLY for me up until the ~Feb 20 Maps update; now it struggles to lock and is almost unusable. Tried wiping, FasterGPS/FasterFix and a few other things to no avail. Although others with different phones are experiencing some of these issues (just read the Maps reviews in PS) the problems seem to be hit and miss amongst users. I feel your pain
