Did you apply any OTA Update to your *ROOTED* phone? Read here for fix. - Thunderbolt General

First and foremost, you cannot apply OTA updates to rooted phones. Doing so will cause a boot loop. If for whatever reason you did this anyway, I quoted a fellow XDA member with instructions to fix your phone.
* I did this just to be helful and for those who keep on posting questions and spamming the board because they did not read this q and a faq http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220484. I suggest you read all of the post at the provided link after fixing your phone. All future questions you may have will most likely be answered there.

Thank you all for the responses. I stumbled upon this info just as I was ready to give up searching. Sorry I can't post the link. Method #1 worked for me. I didn't lose any data either...
Method 1: (thanks to sonicbuffalo for posting this method)
*DOES NOT DELETE YOUR DATA
1) Once you are in ClockWorkMod Recovery, scroll down to "Wipe cache partition".
2) Select "Wipe cache partition" using the home key or power button.
3) Now, scroll down to "Yes - wipe cache".
4) Press the home key or power button to perform the wipe.
5) When done, restart your phone.
6) Your ThunderBolt will boot into the Android operating system and will say that the UPDATE FAILED.
7) Choose Cancel to stop the update.
8) Restart your phone one last time and you'll see that the "Powering Off" loop is gone.
Method 2: This will DELETE your data (do this if method one does not work)
1) Once you are in ClockworkMod Recovery, select "wipe data/factory reset" using volume keys.
2) Press home key or power button to select.
3) Answer Yes, by scrolling with vol keys and home or power key to select.
4) When phone reboots, the powering off loop should be gone.
Method 3: This only works if you have a Nandroid Backup from prior to accepting the update.
1) Once in clockwork select "backup and restore" using vol keys.
2) Select using the home key or power button
3) From next menu select "restore"
4) Choose your backup from list and select.
5) Answer yes to restore backup
6) When phone reboots the "powering off" loop is gone.

[Q] New to Desire S dev

Hi all,
received my desire s today so im entirely new to modding it (but not new to flashing other devices)
is there a simple way or can someone explain step by step how to put a custom ROM on it safely?
I've heard of something called XTC clip but i dont want to buy it just to put a custom rom on the desire.
all help is appreciated, thanks
Well, the XTC Clip is to make your device S-OFF, that will allow you to root your phone so you can flash a custom rom
Still i using Stock Rom and never had problems with it

S-OFF?
charrsss
Yeah, if you turn on your phone pressing volume down you can enter the hboot and see if your phone is S-OFF, or S-ON...
If its S-OFF you can root your phone.. if not you cant
I dont know much about this neither
PLEASE PUT QUESTIONS IN THE GENERAL FORUM !!!!!!!
Steps to flash -
1) S-OFF
2) Root
3) Install ROM Manager and Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery.
4) Put ROM into your SD card. Boot into recovery and wipe data. Then Flash the ROM
You can find details in other threads
Step 1: Go to Setting -> Power to disable fastboot.
Step 2: Power down your device. Press and hold Volume down button first and then press the power button. Hold both buttons for 10 secs and release them. You will get to see the phone info. Check Hboot version and S-on/S-off status.
If your Hboot is 0.98 and S-on, you may proceed as below.
Step 3: Get the software from alpharev and get a copy of the ROM (I am using Virtuous unity 1.27). When you got the Virtuous Unity rom, copy it into your SDcard.
Step 4: Get a copy of Linux: You can get Ubuntu.
Step 5: Unzip the alpharevx into the root directory.
Step 6: Open Terminal. Go to the directory that you keep your alpharevx apps. Execute command: sudo ./alpharevx to activate the program. You will be prompted to key in your password for your Ubuntu.
Step 7: Connect your data cable. Select "disk drive" and the screen will start to react to your connection. Copy the number generated by alpharevx.
Step 8: Visit alpharev.nl/x/beta/ again and click download again. Key in the serial number gotten from the program and fill up the form. Once it done, a serial number will be generated. Copy the serial number and key it to the alpharevx program. Once it is done, power down the phone and repeat Step 2.
Step 9: Once you have verified the status of your phone, do not exit. Press Volume down button once to select "recovery" and press power button.
Press Volume down button to select "wipe data/factory reset".
Press Volume down button to select "Yes"
Press Volume down button to select "wipe cache partition"
Press Volume down button to select "Yes"
Press Volume down button to select "advance"
Press Volume down button to select "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Press Volume down button to select "Yes"
Press Volume down button to select "Wipe Battery Stats" (if any)
Press Volume down button to select "Yes"
Press Volume down button to select "back"
Press Volume down button to select "install zip from sdcard"
Press Volume down button to select "choose zip from sdcard"
Select the rom.
Once the Rom installation is done, reboot the phone.
I found that it takes some time for the phone to be set up. Just be patient.
All the best!!!
Virtuous unity 1.27 has superuser, rom manager, task manager, overclocking and many other goodies.
Just need to
1) S-off
2) wipe to prepare phone
3) install the ROM.
I am one happy user and first time ROM flasher and user of virtuous unity 1.27

@ verifunny
Manymany thanks!! using your guide and another I found stickied about alpharevx I am completely unlocked to S-OFF and now have virtuous installed
many thanks to all others also for their replies.
@ ben, you are welcome. The credits goes to those developers.
For my comment after step 2, it is written so that you are seeing what you should and the alpharexv does not support anything other than 0.98.0000. I think there is a hboot that is of a higher version.
Enjoy your new installation. I am very happy with it.

Is there a plonkers guide for installing custom roms?

I've never installed a custom ROM on a Desire S before but the limited instructions assume you have a bit of knowledge, I don't as far as a Desire S is concerned.

then root with gingerbreak Link

In about 4 to 5 minutes the phone will tell you its done. (DO NOT INTERUPT THIS PROCESS), make sure you have at least 30% battery before you begin!

If you are (Check your HBoot first) able/gonna use alpharevx (Read all alpharevx topics for more info)then try it like this:
1 - Find a rom you what to use and download rom, Copy Rom to your sd card.
2 - If able to use alapharevx then download alpharevx and run it as told to.
3 - if all goes well with alpharevx when it asks do you want custom recovery answer "YES" and wait.
4 - once done power down phone, then hold volume down and power and wait for hboot screen then wait till you have control (you use volume keys to move up/down and power button to select) volume down to recovery and press power button, now wait for recovery to load.
5 - (Again volume buttons for up/down, power button for select, and back button to go back a menu) Once recovery loads use backup to backup rom you are on now (just incase).
6 - Once backup is complete, go back a menu and select "data/factory reset" then Yes.
7 - Once done goto wipe cache partition then Yes.
8 - Once done goto advance and then "Wipe Dalvik Cache" then Yes, once done go back a menu.
9 - Just to be on the safe side do a "data/factory reset" then Yes again.
10 - Once done goto "Install zip from sdcard" then "Choose zip from sdcard" scroll up/down to the rom.zip you downloaded the select it, then goto yes then wait.
11 - Once that is done go back to main menu then select "Reboot System Now"
12 - Now sit back and wait for the rom to load and sort it self out.
If all went without an error it should all work ok.
And after all that just notice someone beat me to it......

also i was a complete newbie as well, i read a lot here at XDA. These tutorials are mostly very easy to understand even for complete newbies. although my english is not that great i could understand them quite good. Just don't be that lazy , search for your information, try to learn something about rooting/flashind and your device, these information are here.

Everything is pretty much the same still. Even though I'm still running the same 4.0.0.4 Recovery it is very outdated now.
All you need to remember is to navigate with the volume key and select with power.

What's the best way to wipe an Android phone?

I have a T-Mobile HTC Hero. One thing I did, was reinstall the operating system, by downloading an updated OS from the T-Mobile website, and installed it using HTC Sync.
According to HTC Sync, this wipes everything on the phone and installs the new OS..
But is this actually the case? Does this really completely wipe the phone before installing it?
What I am looking to do... is completely wipe the phone, and then install the new OS. If I've already done that, good. If I haven't, I need to.
If you go to Settings and do a factory reset, that only resets user settings and removes applications. It doesn't wipe the OS and everything on the phone. As said, I need to do all of that, and the install the new OS.
You can either:
1) To initiate the Android device wipe process, first tap your Android Menu key to bring up a number of on-screen options.
2) Next, choose the Settings option within the on-screen menu, and on the following screen scroll down to and tap Privacy.
3) Within the Privacy Settings menu, tap the Factory Data Reset option, and on the following screen choose whether you want to wipe all data on your device, all data on your external microSD memory card or both, by filling in the appropriate check boxes. Then confirm the action by tapping Reset Phone.
4) You'll be prompted one more time to confirm your Android device wipe on the Factory Data Reset screen, and if you're sure you're ready to erase your device, tap the Erase Everything button to complete the process.
or to delete the data from your phone and to install a ROM:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIyYHfb1Afg
Reboot phone and then:
1. Press down button and Power button together.
2. Use the volume down button to select recovery then press the power button.
3. Okay use the volume down button and go to advanced three times.
4. Press the power button and use the trackpad to select.
5. Wipe/factory reset and then select yes.
6. Wipe cache
7. Select advance
8. Wipe dalvic cache
9. Select install from sd card then select the ROM you wish to install.
NB: I am not responsible for any data lost on your phone for the above.

Let's try this:
1. Install ADB
Turn on your device, let it sit at the setup screen.
Connect device to PC via USB and select “Yes” when asked authorize USB debugging on the device.
Open a command prompt window on your PC and type the following commands:
Code:
adb shell
Code:
am start -S com.android.settings -c android.intent.category.LAUNCHER 1
This will open the Settings app on your device.
From device Settings, select “Backup & Reset” and then select “Factory data reset” to perform a complete wipe of the device.
Note that this will erase everything on your internal storage. Make sure you’ve a backup of important files before doing a factory reset.
