I've never installed a custom ROM on a Desire S before but the limited instructions assume you have a bit of knowledge, I don't as far as a Desire S is concerned.
well u need to s-off ur phone first Link 1 (by software) or Link 2 (by hardware)
then root with gingerbreak Link
then install custom recovery Link
then choose custom rom to flash Link

read twice every post before apply any of this files..just make sure that you understand whats going on if you do that.
happy rooting
But in you links aren't included the main - HOW TO flash custom rom...
that is a joke ..right?

If you are (Check your HBoot first) able/gonna use alpharevx (Read all alpharevx topics for more info)then try it like this:
1 - Find a rom you what to use and download rom, Copy Rom to your sd card.
2 - If able to use alapharevx then download alpharevx and run it as told to.
3 - if all goes well with alpharevx when it asks do you want custom recovery answer "YES" and wait.
4 - once done power down phone, then hold volume down and power and wait for hboot screen then wait till you have control (you use volume keys to move up/down and power button to select) volume down to recovery and press power button, now wait for recovery to load.
5 - (Again volume buttons for up/down, power button for select, and back button to go back a menu) Once recovery loads use backup to backup rom you are on now (just incase).
6 - Once backup is complete, go back a menu and select "data/factory reset" then Yes.
7 - Once done goto wipe cache partition then Yes.
8 - Once done goto advance and then "Wipe Dalvik Cache" then Yes, once done go back a menu.
9 - Just to be on the safe side do a "data/factory reset" then Yes again.
10 - Once done goto "Install zip from sdcard" then "Choose zip from sdcard" scroll up/down to the rom.zip you downloaded the select it, then goto yes then wait.
11 - Once that is done go back to main menu then select "Reboot System Now"
12 - Now sit back and wait for the rom to load and sort it self out.
If all went without an error it should all work ok.
And after all that just notice someone beat me to it......

Is this still current? It's the first straight forward explanation I've seen! I want to put a new ROM on my Epic Touch this weekend. I've done a lot of rooting but no ROM flashing yet. Thank you!

of course u need to s-off first
also i was a complete newbie as well, i read a lot here at XDA. These tutorials are mostly very easy to understand even for complete newbies. although my english is not that great i could understand them quite good. Just don't be that lazy , search for your information, try to learn something about rooting/flashind and your device, these information are here.

Everything is pretty much the same still. Even though I'm still running the same 4.0.0.4 Recovery it is very outdated now.
All you need to remember is to navigate with the volume key and select with power.
First and foremost, you cannot apply OTA updates to rooted phones. Doing so will cause a boot loop. If for whatever reason you did this anyway, I quoted a fellow XDA member with instructions to fix your phone.
* I did this just to be helful and for those who keep on posting questions and spamming the board because they did not read this q and a faq http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220484. I suggest you read all of the post at the provided link after fixing your phone. All future questions you may have will most likely be answered there.

Thank you all for the responses. I stumbled upon this info just as I was ready to give up searching. Sorry I can't post the link. Method #1 worked for me. I didn't lose any data either...
Method 1: (thanks to sonicbuffalo for posting this method)
*DOES NOT DELETE YOUR DATA
1) Once you are in ClockWorkMod Recovery, scroll down to "Wipe cache partition".
2) Select "Wipe cache partition" using the home key or power button.
3) Now, scroll down to "Yes - wipe cache".
4) Press the home key or power button to perform the wipe.
5) When done, restart your phone.
6) Your ThunderBolt will boot into the Android operating system and will say that the UPDATE FAILED.
7) Choose Cancel to stop the update.
8) Restart your phone one last time and you'll see that the "Powering Off" loop is gone.
Method 2: This will DELETE your data (do this if method one does not work)
1) Once you are in ClockworkMod Recovery, select "wipe data/factory reset" using volume keys.
2) Press home key or power button to select.
3) Answer Yes, by scrolling with vol keys and home or power key to select.
4) When phone reboots, the powering off loop should be gone.
Method 3: This only works if you have a Nandroid Backup from prior to accepting the update.
1) Once in clockwork select "backup and restore" using vol keys.
2) Select using the home key or power button
3) From next menu select "restore"
4) Choose your backup from list and select.
5) Answer yes to restore backup
6) When phone reboots the "powering off" loop is gone.

Please, can you confirm me if this method work for HTC ChaCha:
Thanks in advance for your answers!
source:http://androidadvices.com/root-install-custom-recovery-htc-chacha-tutorial/3/
Procedure to turn S Off and Root HTC Chacha Phone:
First up you need to download the CWM Recovery image file( http://downloads.androidadvices.com/H/PH06img.zip)
and also you need to download the Super user zip file (http://downloads.androidadvices.com/H/su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip) to your computer.
After downloading, you need to connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable which you got at the time of purchase
and copy these two zip files as it is to your phone’s SD card.
Once you finish copying, you need to remove the USB cable which you have connected.
You should not rename the files or modify the contents in any manner or else these files won’t get detected in the process of updation.
Now from the Settings page you need to Disable the Fast boot which you can do from the path Settings > power > Fast boot.
After turning Off, you need to now press the Volume Down Key and continuing holding that you need to press the power button.
Now, with the help of Volume button, you need to select the HBoot option after which it should show you the S Off.
HTC Chacha Recovery Mode
Now, it will scan the file automatically and will find for the file which is named as PH06IMG.zip on your SD Card after which you need to install it.
Now, you will have to press the Volume Up key and then the flashing process will be started, once its done you will then be asked to reboot he phone manually.
Once the phone gets rebooted, you again need to turn off the phone and then press the Volume Down Key and continuing holding that you need to press the power button and select the option of HBoot.
Recovery Mode Procedure
Once you enter into the HBoot, the phone will scan the PH06IMG.zip which you have placed in the SD Card. Now, you need to enter into the Recovery mode by pressing the power button and the Volume key which will take you to the clock work mod recovery.
Recovery Mode
Now, you need to select the option of “Apply zip from sd card” and select the zip file which is named as “su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip”
and confirm the selection by selecting the option of “Yes”.
Now you will see that the once you select the file, within few seconds, the device will be rebooted and that’s it you have now successfully seen on how you can easily root and install the super user in your HTC Chacha.
Just in case after the above super user installation if you again land up in the recovery screen, then you need to select “++++ Go back ++++” and then select “reboot system now” to reboot the phone.
Unfortunately this will not give you S-OFF. Actually this whole process will not work if your phone is S-ON.
I have stated about 57 times that you cannot install CWM on a non-S-OFF device.
Cheers,
Alex.
Believe me i tried every thing they inveted on earth to turn s-on to s-off and nothing worked only xtc clip will help u with that

Hey guys I'm having some problems installing a ROM properly every time something is messsing up, so if can anyone give me a guide on how to install a ROM that will be great.
Iv'e tried google it but the guides are messed up
Nothing wrong with any guides online, but let's begin
Pre-steps:
1) Make sure you have a custom recovery http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/205
2) Download the ROM you want from its thread
3) Download Gapps if you want them http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942
4) If the ROM's thread doesn't say it has root built-in, download SuperSU http://download.chainfire.eu/635/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.36.zip
5) Move the files to your phone if they aren't there already
The flashing steps:
1) Power off your phone
2) Hold power and volume down buttons down until it boots to bootloader
3) Press volume down until you see the text that says recovery
4) Press power button, it will now boot to your recovery
5) Press the big button that says wipe and swipe to factory reset
6) Go back to the recovery start screen
7) Press install
8) Find the files you downloaded earlier and flash them in this order: ROM --> Gapps --> SU
9) Wait while it does its thing
10) Press the button that says reboot system
11) The device will boot and you have just flashed your ROM!
