Bad flash. Re-flash. Fixt.
You may want to check the MD5sum of the rom you downloaded.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
ENSURE YOU DO THE FOLLOWING BEFORE FLASH;
-Using the volume buttons scroll down to to down to wipe data/factory reset. (unless you are upgrading, THIS STEP IS NOT OPTIONAL!)
-Press the power button to select.
-Use the volume buttons to scroll down to YES-- delete all user data, use the power button to select.
-Scroll down to Advanced press power to select.
-Scroll to Wipe Dalvik Cache press power to select.
-Go down to Yes-- Wipe Dalvik Cache use the power button to select.
-Select go back
-Go to Install zip from sdcard and select it using the power button.
-Select choose zip from sdcard.
-Scroll down and find the ROM you wish to flash press the power button to select it.
-Select Yes - Install (roms name)
Use search next time.

Got stuck. Confused

Full ROM Installation Instructions From Stock:
I'm currently trying to get Infused 1.5 on my Infuse.
1) First get root and install modded 3e recovery.
-done
2) Install ROM Manager from the Market and launch it.
-done
3) Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and choose "Galaxy S i9000".
-done (I clicked it and nothing happened)
here it is becoming very confusing.
do i donwnload ROM first from the ROM Manager download section (if yes where does it store it)
4) If you've booted into CWM recovery since installing it, skip to step 5. If not, select "Reboot into Recovery". When 3e recovery comes up, select reinstall packages by pressing the power button. You will have to select it twice and then CWM recovery will come up. Select "reboot system now".
- this is too much
5) In ROM Manager, go to "Download ROM", select my section (gtg465x), select the latest release, and hit the download button.
The way i understand it is i download it first and then reboot into 'recovery mode' and from there i locate the ROM and choose flash.
6) When you get to the "Installation Type" prompt, select "Full".
7) Select your addons and follow the on screen prompts.
8) When you get to the "ROM Pre-Installation" prompt, select "Wipe Data and Cache" if you're coming from another ROM (or stock) or want a clean installation. You can uncheck "Wipe Dalvik" as it's included in "Wipe Data and Cache".
9) Press OK and hold your breath. When 3e recovery comes up, just select reinstall packages.
And another thing is how do i check whether i successfully installed 3e. I used a different file explorer, NOT the root explorer so i am a little worried, however, it let me mount as R/W and i managed to rename recovery into recovery.orig in system/bin/ as suggested. They both are in that folder now, the new recovery and the original one.
Please share your thoughts.
After you flashed clockwork mod, select "reboot into recovery" in rom manager. If it brings you to the blue(writing) recovery select "reinstall packages" you my have to do that a couple of times. After that it will bring you into green recovery(clockwork recovery). Then select reboot, after that go into rom manager download the rom you want, select full install, addons, wipe, and then it will restart the phone and start the install process. Since it has a Voodoo kernel it will take up to 15-20 minutes to boot up for the first time. Oh and after you see it saying installing rom, select reboot system then it will bring you to the samsung screen for a while(converting to ext4 voodoo).

it's not nearly as difficult or scary as you may think.. If you follow the instructions step by step, you'll have no trouble.

Doesnt matter... You havent done anything distructive yet
I prefer to have everything dowloaded and ready before starting, incase my internet connection goes down.

There is a much simpler solution to this.. From stock, simply odin flash the voodoo community kernel and let it do it's thing on bootup. Voila, your rooted, lagfixed, and have red cwm... Stick a ROM on your sd card and flash away.
You can get into red cwm from turning off the phone, holding down both volume keys, press the power button until you see the samsung logo, and continue to hold the volume keys until you see red text
One note, at this point, never use rom manager, unless you want a brick. Green cwm doesn't know how to handle the ext4 partition. Only flash from red cwm.

4 - once done power down phone, then hold volume down and power and wait for hboot screen then wait till you have control (you use volume keys to move up/down and power button to select) volume down to recovery and press power button, now wait for recovery to load.
5 - (Again volume buttons for up/down, power button for select, and back button to go back a menu) Once recovery loads use backup to backup rom you are on now (just incase).
6 - Once backup is complete, go back a menu and select "data/factory reset" then Yes.
7 - Once done goto wipe cache partition then Yes.
8 - Once done goto advance and then "Wipe Dalvik Cache" then Yes, once done go back a menu.
9 - Just to be on the safe side do a "data/factory reset" then Yes again.
10 - Once done goto "Install zip from sdcard" then "Choose zip from sdcard" scroll up/down to the rom.zip you downloaded the select it, then goto yes then wait.
11 - Once that is done go back to main menu then select "Reboot System Now"

If all went without an error it should all work ok.

also i was a complete newbie as well, i read a lot here at XDA. These tutorials are mostly very easy to understand even for complete newbies. although my english is not that great i could understand them quite good. Just don't be that lazy , search for your information, try to learn something about rooting/flashind and your device, these information are here.

Everything is pretty much the same still. Even though I'm still running the same 4.0.0.4 Recovery it is very outdated now.
All you need to remember is to navigate with the volume key and select with power.

Did you apply any OTA Update to your *ROOTED* phone? Read here for fix.

First and foremost, you cannot apply OTA updates to rooted phones. Doing so will cause a boot loop. If for whatever reason you did this anyway, I quoted a fellow XDA member with instructions to fix your phone.
* I did this just to be helful and for those who keep on posting questions and spamming the board because they did not read this q and a faq http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220484. I suggest you read all of the post at the provided link after fixing your phone. All future questions you may have will most likely be answered there.

Thank you all for the responses. I stumbled upon this info just as I was ready to give up searching. Sorry I can't post the link. Method #1 worked for me. I didn't lose any data either...
Method 1: (thanks to sonicbuffalo for posting this method)
*DOES NOT DELETE YOUR DATA
1) Once you are in ClockWorkMod Recovery, scroll down to "Wipe cache partition".
2) Select "Wipe cache partition" using the home key or power button.
3) Now, scroll down to "Yes - wipe cache".
4) Press the home key or power button to perform the wipe.
5) When done, restart your phone.
6) Your ThunderBolt will boot into the Android operating system and will say that the UPDATE FAILED.
7) Choose Cancel to stop the update.
8) Restart your phone one last time and you'll see that the "Powering Off" loop is gone.
Method 2: This will DELETE your data (do this if method one does not work)
1) Once you are in ClockworkMod Recovery, select "wipe data/factory reset" using volume keys.
2) Press home key or power button to select.
3) Answer Yes, by scrolling with vol keys and home or power key to select.
4) When phone reboots, the powering off loop should be gone.
Method 3: This only works if you have a Nandroid Backup from prior to accepting the update.
1) Once in clockwork select "backup and restore" using vol keys.
2) Select using the home key or power button
3) From next menu select "restore"
4) Choose your backup from list and select.
5) Answer yes to restore backup
6) When phone reboots the "powering off" loop is gone.

[Q] Froyo -> ICS how

hi,
i have vibrant t959. and its running FROYO..i downloaded ICS RC5 from nyx. I would like to know how to update to that. my phone is rooted.
Please it would be much appreciated if clear STEPS are shown..
thank you
Procedure
Gingerbread
--------------------------------------------
You will be needing rooted Gingerbread for upgrading to ICS
--------------------------------------------
Root 2.3.6 :
--------------------------------------------
You have to use Super One Click 2.3.3
Before Root enable USB Debugging in Applications>Development
Open Super One Click as Admin if on Win7/Vista. Connect Phone. Click Root
--------------------------------------------
ICS
--------------------------------------------
You will need to install Clock Work Mod from ROM Manager for the procedure
-------------------------------------------
Procedure
-------------------------------------------
1. Go to Clock Work Mod recovery using the 3 key combo : volume UP + home button + power button, keep those pressed until it goes into the Clock Work Mod recovery.
2. Using the volume buttons to navigate up and down select Wipe Data/Factory Reset by pressing the home button, hit YES. Wait for it to finish and then Wipe Cache the same way you did with Wipe Data/Factory Reset. NoW Go to advanced menu> Wipe Dalvik Cache.Go back to main menu.
3. Now it`s time to flash the ICS SGS ROM :
4. Select install zip from sd card > choose zip from sd card> browse for the zip u downloaded>choose YES and let it do the magic. If it happens to reboot immediately into Clock Work Mod recovery with a different look (blue), it means it actually flashed just the ICS Kernel first.
Note: If u dont get to Clock Work Mod then you have done it.
5. If you do get there then browse for the zip again and flash it this time it will take longer as it has to install the complete ROM
6. Now all you need to do is wait for it to finish. After the flashing is done> Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache as you already know how to do it
7. Choose Reboot System Now. It takes 5-15 minutes to boot.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Sry cant provide you wid the links
