how to flash a new radio rom desire s - HTC Desire S

Can someone explain or link me to somewhere that tells me how to update my radio version from 20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M to 20.41.30.0818U_3817.07.00.19_M. This is the 1st time I will have done this so go gently. I need an idiots guide thanks

How to: Flash Radios
1. Download your Radio zip package.
2. Copy your Radio zip package to your SDcard root directory and rename it to PG88IMG.zip.
3. Turn off your phone and turn it back on by pressing volume down and power button together (You need to turn off fastboot under phone settings > power options).
4. Once you're in hboot, the bootloader will ask you if you want to install radio.img, just press yes. (Volume up means "YES", and volume down means "NO")
5. Once the radio flashing is complete press your power button once to reboot device. Done!
Note: You must delete your Radio zip package or rename it to something else when booting your phone after flashing new radio image since the bootloader will always try to flash if a PG88IMG.zip file is on your SDcard.

The important thing to note from the link provided is the confirmation of the m5dsum prior to the flashing of the radio; in fact you should always check this for any file that you flash not just radio's (ie ROMs etc) although as RADIO's have the most potential to render your phone useless it's imperative that you always check their m5dsum before flashing them, this is just to ensure that there's been no corruption during the download process.
You'll see other RADIO's which are not included within the post shown above from the main INDEX thread under the sub-section RADIO, these include two recently leaked ones...(see my sig for the latest).
Good luck.

md5sum is used to check if your file is corrupt
flashing radio is risky & doing something wrong or flashing corrupt radio can brick your device easily
so checking md5sum ensure that the file you downloaded isnt corrupt
(you should be able to find the original md5 sum in the thread where you got the radio to compare with that of your file)

YES, unless you're S-OFF you shouldn't attempt to update radio unless through an over the air upgrade from your phone network or from HTC.

Start reading the sticky guides (which are the threads at the top) which are at the top of the Forums...
They should both assist in upping your general Android knowledge and informing you of the processes that you are considering going through.
Without sounding insulting I'd suggest that you spend the next few day even a week reading all this information until you have an actual understanding into what you are doing and what the full implications are.
You'll void your device's warranty by doing this so you need to understand what you're doing and why as opposed to blindly following the steps within a guide.
There are people here to assist.....but I believe that you need to understand

I have one confusion, Do I have to update hboot prior to flash any radio or not ?
I have
Hboot 6.98.1002
Radio 3805.06.02.03_M
Can i Update this radio?http://hotfile.com/dl/129621795/c522912/PG88IMG-3821.08.00.24.M.zip.html for my DESIRE S or NOT? Please tell me, Because i have call quality(Sound) problem with MIUI 1.9.16 with Tiamat Kernel 1.1.3, so also tell me updating radio solves that issue or not?

Desperate Joe
Don't know where to start, but I have a bit of a headache with my phone. This is my first smart phone and just when I got used to it and began enjoying it, it looks like I've screwed it with an upgrade to ICS. It could be pure coincidence but my phone started constantly rebooting a few days after I upgraded it to Virtous Saga v1.0.0. I've tried several other ROMs in the meantime and I either couldn't install them properly or they gave me the same outcome, i.e. constant rebooting. Currently I'm on ICE DS v 4.3. The weird thing about it is that without a SIM in the phone, I don't get rebooting, but as soon as I put in my SIM card it starts again.
After spending hours looking through various forums, it looks like the constant rebooting is a fairly common problem with HTC phones. Many say that the problem is a faulty motherboard, but since it all started with me when I upgraded to ICS, I've read that it could be due to old radio version. I want to make sure this is not the problem, but I can't seems to be able to flash my radio with the above instructions. I've uploaded PG88IMG.zip onto my SD card and in the hboot I can see the message PG88IMG.zip being parsed but nothing seems to happen after that. Can anyone help?
With one of the radio updated I've downloaded the parsing message showed briefly and disappeared, but now, with another radio flash it gets stuck on that message! What do I do? I was told whatever I do I shouldn't take the battery out, but how do I end this?

Hey Desperate Joe
Haven't actually tried this, but we're about to go for gold... maybe it helps.
Good luck!

Thanks for the post. It think I've combed through all XDADevelopers forums about this and some other elsewhere.
I've realised that my problem is to do with the fact that my phone is S-ON and it looks like there is no way to flash radio unless you have S-OFF.
If someone's managed to do it with S-ON I would dearly love to hear from them.

On S-ON you can update radio by placing a PG88IMG.zip with newer version in the SDcard and reboot to bootloader. It will flash.
The problem is that you cannot to revert if it is not working. You will need to downgrade the entire system.

Yes, I've tried that. Bootloader gets stuck with the message "PG88IMG.zip parsing". After a couple of hours I took out the battery and rebooted. The radio wasn't flashed, but luckily at least the phone wasn't bricked.
In your statement you seem to be fairly confident that should work so I'll try again. And don't worry if I brick my phone I will blame only myself :silly: since I can't work with a phone that keeps restarting with a sim card and the problem was created in the first place by me upgrading to ICS.
How many times do I need to fu** up to get that saying "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!"

I've dropped PG88IMG.zip onto the sdcard and started bootloader. Again I get the message Parsing... [PG88IMG.zip] and there is a vertical blue bar on in the top right corner which gradually goes up and disappears. This, I assume should signal it's been flashed, but the bootloader is stuck on Parsing... [PG88IMG.zip]. I've tried pressing UP, DOWN and POWER buttons at the same time without success so I took out the battery and started the phone again.
I've checked android-info.txt and the cid number is HTCCN701. How do I know that's ok?
My phone is unlocked SAGA PVT SHIP S-On HBOOT 2.00.0002 RADIO 3822.10.08.04_M EMMC-BOOT with 4EXT RECOVERY V2.2.7 RC5

I've typed the instruction and got reply: cidnum: O2___001 finished. Total time 0.002s
I assume this is because it is an O2 phone
After that I've flashed this radio: Radio.......... 20.71.30.0833U_3831.17.00.16_M
The messages I get are:

No image!
Loading ... [PG88DIAG.NBH]
No image r wrong image!
Loading ... [PG88IMG.ZIP]
Parsing ... [PG88IMG.ZIP]
After the last message was gone I've rebooted but I'm still with the old radio. Do you have any other aces up your sleeve?
Your help is greatly appreciated

Nope, sorry.

HTC Noob Question about Radio Flashing

I've seen devs mention to flash a radio from Hboot and Fast boot before. Are these terms synonymous? Fast boot is accessed from Hboot correct? I've flashed a radio a few times, but never understood the terminology. A PD98IMG is always flashed the same way from what I understand.
More or less correct. HBoot flashing is done with the PD98IMG.zip on the SDcard. PD98IMG.zip can contain any number of images to be flashed. Fastboot flashing is done using the fastboot.exe and can flash a single image.

I've never quite understood what the advantage is to fastboot flashing. Then again, I've never truly understood fastboot in general.
Something I definitely need to do more reading on.
I've tried several times, and several methods to flash my radio to the 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 radio img. And nothing seems to be working. My best guess is its user error. I'm a noob and trying to learn how to flash my radio. I currently have the 12.39.30.19P-26.06.04_M with the TPGB-Ninja_0618 ROM and [email protected] #28 kernel.
I've done the method where i go into adb to access bootloader, then i flash the radio.img then reboot the phone and that doesnt work. I've tried running the radio.img though CWM and that didn't work.
If I power off my phone and then hold power and -vol down to get into the bootloader it automatically will go into hboot and start to run through the PD98IMG.zip. I'm wondering.
Do I need that .zip folder on my sdcard forever or can I get rid of it?
Also, can I just switch out radio.img in the PD98IMG.zip with the new radio.img?
Can I do the above question without having all the other .img 's in the .zip folder?
I've done some research, but haven't found my answers, or was able to fix my problem.
So hopefully someone can help me.
Please be gentle with me, I'm new to this type of thing, but a fast learner.
Thanks in advance

Assuming the PD98IMG.zip containing the radio flashes properly, you can remove it afterwards.
Have you checked out the inspire only radio thread in the dev section, yet?
There's already a ready-to-flash PD98IMG.zip for the radio you want to flash on that thread.
Download it from that thread, verify the MD5 checksum, plop it in the root directory of your SD card, reboot into hboot/bootloader, once it finds the PD98IMG.zip, confirm the update, and away you go.
Ok I'll try that as soon as I get to my computer. Thanks for the reply and I'll let you know how it goes.

Just don't forget to check that MD5. I have had incomplete (meaning...BAD) radio downloads on a solid WiFi connection, so it DOES happen from time to time.

Couple of things. 1) Be sure to give the radio long enough to "warm up"...I'ave had it take several hours after flashing before I started getting decent speeds from a radio I know works. 2) It is usually recommended to keep a copy of your radio flash on your SD card in case you need it (GPS fail, etc., ) so you can reflash if you are away from a PC, but not keep it in the root of your SD. It's very possible to end up in a continuous boot loop until you somehow either get the file off your root (SD card reader) or fool the phone into thinking it isn't there by pulling the SD card when you pull the battery to recover (I've only heard the last trick works)...

You've also made sure you have the appropriate RIL for the new radio you flashed, correct? That radio thread also has the RILs + info about them, as well.
Also try rebooting more than once after flashing a radio/ril, just for good measure.
When I first flashed the 04_11_M2 radio, I had only rebooted once, as a result of the flashing process. Once my phone was done loading up, I received my first call with it, the caller couldn't hear me, but I could hear them. Caller tried calling back. Same thing. I decided to give it another flash and reboot. I called that person back, and it was working, never experienced that since.
Coincidence? Who knows? But radios are weird, quirky things that seem to need a little "voodoo" type flashing/rebooting to kick them in, I suspect.
Well I think I found out why I'm getting these speeds. My radio has a "P" and not a "U" like in meiguoguizi's sig. I have the same radio as that (number wise) but he has a "U" and not a "P".
The radios that I can flash have an "x" in that place so won't that just mean it will switch to whatever letter my data is running on?
I think I found out why I am having this problem.
I can flash the radio.
I can flash the RIL.
But I have a "P" where the "U" is supposed to be to represent the HSUPA speeds.
If thats the the reason then I don't know.

I think that U/P thing is determined by one of the settings in the build.prop file. I know it's been discussed before, I just don't recall the details. If you visit the "editing the build.prop file" thread in the dev section, or possibly amongst the comments in the inspire radio thread, I think you might find the specifics in one of those places.
Or browse through henrybravo's posts, I think I remember him explaining it to someone.
Bottom line is that you have the same radio, it's just a setting that's determining the connection type and as a result, that letter changes, depending on that setting.

First, try another re-flash of the radio.
I did a full wipe and restore and got all the sounds back. Reloaded the RIL and everything works fine.

Clockwork is the recovery... the other way is via fasboot. Type it on google its the easy way of learning. Have fun with flashing roms...
You don't flash a radio from recovery.
File must be named PG58IMG.zip. No other name will be ok.
Next, do a MD5 check, because a corrupt file will brick your phone. Correct MD5 should be posted st the source. There are a few ways to check, buy the easiest is with Astro. Long press on the file, then select "details". In a few seconds MD5 will appear. Check it against source.
If ok then make sure it your PG58IMG.zip is on the root of your SD card.
Boot into bootloader (not recovery). It should ask if you want to update. Press the volume up to accept. Wait until update is done. Don't press any keys. Don't pull the battery. If you do, you're out $600.
Reboot, and enjoy your new radio. Make sure you don't leave the PG58IMG.zip on the root of your card, phone will constantly try to update.
You should then load the matching RIL. That should be a flash in recovery, but you have to mount system before you flash, and unmount it before you reboot.

[Q] HELP HELP How to Unbrick My Sensation

I rooted my sensation using the revolutionary method to get S=OFF and decided to put the phone back to S=ON so I could sell it and buy the new Galaxy S2 when it comes out this month.
I went through the process on the development forum to get S=ON and I used the correct RU file for TMOUS.
I made sure the CID was properly set using fastboot and it was set to TMOB010 so I could not flash to wrong RU file.
I flashed the RU file and it flashed fine and said the process completed with no errors.
I used the proper fastboot command to write the secureflag to 3 and the HBoot screen showed S=OFF and so far so good.
I rebooted the phone and the TMobile Sens ROM booted up fine to the home screen.
I shut the phone off figuring the process had been completed fine and when I turned the phone on an hour later, it booted to the HBoot screen with a "security warning" message.
Now all the phone will do is boot to the HBoot screen, I tried to re-flash the RU file like the forum stated but I keep getting a battery low error even with a fully charged battery.
Now all I have is a phone that only boots to the HBoot screen with a "security warning message"
The HBoot version is showing the following:
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.17.0008
RADIO-10.11.9007.15.M
eMMC-boot
I hope I do not have a 300 dollar paper weight, any help would be appricetd please.

I may sound like a noob, but I never used the PM function on this site. I am so frustrated I want to throw the dam thing through the wall.
I can't understand why I keep getting the battery is below 30% error every time I try and run the RU file to re-flash the ROM. I have tried two different fully charged batteries with no luck.
Thank god I have my G2x and my Nexus S as backups, at least they be rooted and un-rooted very easily, unlike this POS.
If your H-Boot now reads S=On, technically there is no evidence to suggest that you have done anything, unless they can find a problem some other way, as you have said you used the correct ROM and CID. So you could try and return the handset under warranty. Someone correct me if im wrong
I also tried copying the RU programs rom.zip file and renaming it to PG581MG.zip and putting in on the SD card and tried flashing it through the Hboot screen but it scrolls thru the file and never ask me if I want to apply the update.
The fastboot function is probably enabled in the stock ROM i flashed and I am stuck in the HBoot screen. I am totally stumped.
Anyone out there willing to try and get this thing operational. I will pay you for your trouble as long as you are trustworthy.
My email is [email protected]

That's because the zip should be PG58IMG.zip and not PG581MG.zip
1.try different battery
2. Can you go into recovery? If yes try wiping from there. Also I believe in hboot there is factory reset option
3. Discharge battery and charge it up.again

I appreciate the info, I have tried everything I know and I am stuck on the HBoot screen. I am going to try a different battery and try letting the original completely discharge and re-charge it and go from there. This is last sensation I am going to buy, I have never in all my years of rooting phones had a product that is a pain in the ass like this one has been.
Shame on HTC, what is the point of having an android product if not to root it and flash a custom ROM. I paid full retail for the thing with my hard earned money so I should be able to do with it what I want too.
I came over from the Nexus S and never had this many problems and complicated procedures going back to the stock ROM.
I am back to my G2x, at least I can easily root and un-root it and it runs the CM7 just fine. Not like the HTC POS.

I finally fixed it!!!
I did have the right file name PG58IMG, but I kept getting an error when I tried to flash it through HBoot when the zip file was loading i.e. invalid image, no image found etc.
I tried the other RU file for TMOUS and extracted the rom.zip, renamed it and flashed it and it finally took and I am up and running.
I apologize for being upset but this was the longest time I ever spent trying to recover a phone, but I have learned allot from this experience and have taken some great notes and will put them in a thread when I get some free time.
Thanks to everyone out there who helped me through this.

I am having the exact same problem from doing the EXACT same thing you did. My HBOOT, radio and everything else is exactly the same as yours as well. So my question is, was the RUU that worked properly for the older T-Mobile one? RUU_Pyramid_TMOUS_1.29.531.2_Radio_10.42.9007.00P_10.11.9007.15_M_release_193714 <-- This one??
Hi. I have similiar problem, but I can't extract zip file from RUU. With HD2 RUU I could unpack it with WINRAR, but with Sensation RUU there is no such option.
How did you extract rom.zip file from RUU... .exe file?
I am stuck at the same place can you please tell me how to extract the zip file from ruu and what is called I would really appreciate it

Run the executable up to the initial screen and leave it open. Then open My Computer and browse to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp and you will see a folder with a long random looking name like {17ad63h46f09a0c883058}. Open this folder and you will see a heap of files - images for branding, scripts and the like, as well as a file called rom.zip. Open this file and in it will be radio.img, which you can extract and rename as PG58IMG.zip.
This is how I extracted the stock radio from my Telstra RUU anyway.

[Q] Help! Virtuous Quattro

Ok, Guys i used the Viruos Inquisition and that was the ICS release and the first one for ICS. I decided to go ahead and try out the Virtuous Quattro...I guess i made a stupid mistake when doing so because when i wiped the Virtuos Inquisition and went ahed and installed the Virtuous Quattro..the phone boots up but as soon as you get the Virtuous Quattro logo it starts the animation of it and freezes right there following with a reboot. Now i hope the device is not bricked or in this case if it is i can fix it, i can go to the recover and stuff, But right now i have no idea how to get this going. I wiped the Virtuous Quattro and the phone boots up with that white htc screen, and keeps rebooting..Please walk me through this if you feel merciful for my idiocy..

Hello
Now, don't worry, this is not what is defined as "Bricked".
I can see that you have did a Full wipe of your ROM, which means, currently, your phone do not have a Firmware supported ROM installed on it.
Here are the ways you could try that will/may solve your issue.
1. Reboot your device into recovery and Connect it VIA USB and copy 3.24 RUU & Virtuous Quattro into your ROOT SD Card folder.
2. Flash 3.24 RUU from HERE, MAKE SURE YOUR SUPERCID is 11111111 - your device should reboot after Installing. Pull battery after it Reboots.
3.Eject your SD card and Reboot your device into bootloader, Select boot into recovery and insert the SD card back. Install the latest Virtuous Quattro from HERE.
4.Reboot.
This should work. Do keep me posted & thank me if it helped!
Cheers!
Thank you for your reply. I tried to do what you stated above, a when i tryed to update the firmware it says
Incorrect CID, I have no clue how to check that CID now

Alright, After reviewing your problem, Have you tried reflashing Viruos Inquisition? Does it boot?
Hopefully I can help.
This is what i had to do to make it work. I downloaded the ADB tools so i can use the cmd promot in windows and wrote the cid to 11111111, it said tmobl or something like that before. I flashed the firmware to the one CursedBat linked and the latest one and the device update the firmware. Also here's the catch when it starts updating the firmware, it will reboot, and continue updating so whoever has a similiar problem make sure you don't shut your device off at that time, it will display update completed and provide you with the option to shut the device. It may take a bit to complete so be sure to be patient and let it work it's magic. Virtues Quattro works well so far for me.
P.S i just read your post TechnoIsMyReligion! I am not sure how i end up being in that post you linked before, but you provided a correct solution as well. I should had done that before Thanks for your replies. When it displayed incorrect CID for me when tried to update the firmware i realized i need to look for a solution with CID.

1. Check your CID using fastboot getvar cid and MID using fastboot getvar mid
2a. If your CID and MID are supported by default, navigate to point 3.
2b. If your CID or MID is not supported by default, do this: (you do it at your own risk)
2c. Open PG58IMG.zip (don't extract it)
2d. Open android-info.txt in text editor
2e. Add your cidnum: <your CID> or modelid: <your MID> to the list, save file and close archive
3. Place PG58IMG.zip on your SD card
4. Boot your device holding power button + vol down button
5. Follow instructions on the screen

[Q] HTC Sensation totally stock in boot loop

Hi, new to the forums and completely perplexed by this rom root flashing stuff. I have tried following some guides but I'm just not sure that they are applicable in my circumstance:
Situation:
1. Complete technophobe sister came back from holiday complaining she needed a new battery for her Sensation as it just kept rebooting over and over.
2. This phone has NEVER been modded or flashed or god knows what. It was unlocked from its carrier (Vodafone) though by the previous owner. Bought in the UK.
3. I had another spare battery and used that. Same situation.
4. I started googling. Lots of people with similar situations but not identical. Key difference is that all of them have meddled with their devices FIRST and THEN got into this bootloop.
5. All the advice is therefore a few steps ahead of where I am and is leaving me confused and puzzles.
What the device can/can't do:
I can get to the Boot menu and navigate it
I cannot boot into Android proper as it were.
"Recovery" and "Factory Reset" both send the phone into its boot loop cycle.
Defining what I call a bootloop:
Goes to the blank white screen with HTC logo then off then rinse and repeat over and over.
What I have done:
I tired following some links from some of these threads and did a SuperCID??? (the thing where you go to cmd and do fastboot-reboot 11111111 or something similar) as all the threads kept complaining that the OP hadn't done this yet. This seemed to be successful but the instructions following then didn't seem to apply.

You could try putting paper or cardboard between the battery and the back cover to keep snug and fit.
If that doesn't work, then I would try to run a ruu.exe to restore the phone to stock. Look here for ruu.exe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26541170

I'd like to add just because you do not seem to be S-OFF, which means you don't have SuperCID, pick an RUU based on your device's CID, else it will not work. check what your CID is and pick the RUU compatible with it. It should be what the phone came with (same region and carrier).
I believe RUU should fix this issue, so you should definitely try that. SuperCID cannot be achieved while S-ON, but it doesn't really matter in your situation (unless you can't find the appropriate RUU).

Anyway, checking the CID before doing anything should be good, just to be safe. And at least as far as I know, it's only possible to achieve SuperCID while S-OFF (possible to S-ON later, but to achieve you must have S-OFF at the time). But this doesn't matter to the problem at hand.

This is where I got confused and started to seek assistance. I have no idea what my CID is or really how to use an RUU or what one to pick. It was a UK Vodafone handset but I don't know how this corresponds to anything or what to do about it.

If you got your device from UK vodaphone then this should be your RUU (got it from RUU thread in Sensation Development).
if you want to check CID (you need adb and fastboot with device drivers on your computers, I'll explain in short (and assume you have the tools)):
connect phone to computer with USB debugging enabled
-adb reboot bootloader
when bootloader starts, run this:
-"fastboot getvar cid"
this will give you the CID your device has.

Hi. Maybe no one has reported it but u can have supercid with s-on, and i dont mean by going s-off first. It is very rare tho, like if u work for lets say vodafone then u can get a stock s-on phone with supercid. For development r something i think. But like i said, its very rare that us general public get our hands on them. But it is possible
Got it to show my cid. Error when flashing the rom using the executable file. Will try again when back from work
Getting stuck at step 4.2/4.3 of this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26541170). The archive is always corrupt and thus changes cannot be made to the text file. I can't do 4.3 because it says error not correct id (ERROR [130]: MODEL ID ERROR)and it directs back to 4.2. Any suggestions?
I have also tried HTCs own flash update (https://support.htc.com/en-us/HTC_S..._Updates/Software_Update_for_HTC_Sensation_4G) this also fails to work for exactly the same reasons.

maybe you used an RUU of SE when you are not (or otherwise, regular for XE). beside CID, there is MID. the procedure of adding your MID and checking the MID is similiar to the CID.
MID indicates your model - in this case mainly three are possible: one for regular sensation, one for XE, and one for 4G.

HI there guys, I have the phone in my hands now.
Will is one of my close friends and I plan to get it back alive.
I'll try and look around and post questions here, as I'm not familiar with HTC devices.
I've flashed god knows how many Samsung's and helped quite a few hundred thousand people with flashing via ODIN.
To me: The phone seems locked, and stuck in a bootloop.
Wiping doesn't resolve the issue, nor does trying to flash another firmware as it comes with errors.

I am doing this. The zipped folder is unable to be opened in windows explorer (opened not extracted) as it says it is not valid. I then tried to use winrar to open it (not extract it) This worked. However when I attempt to save the modifications it says archive corrupt and unable to save.
