My girlfriends sgs4g(why o why) - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Her phone has horrible internet connection even though it has full bars +4g icon, and its freezing up constantly and I'm at my ends wits... is anyone else having these issues with their sgs4g its completely stock not even root(she won't let me root/install custom rom because she likes her lock screen puzzle piece lol)

Have you called T-Mobile and see if it's a network issue?

She might have gone over the limit even if she has unlimited... i have unlimited voice and data and text but if i go over 5gb of data then i get slower connections
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App

Root it an see if it fixes it an if not then go back to stock check 3G use also if not at limit then get replacement
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I've done everything that you guys have recommended except for root I've called tmobile so much they know me by name lol they're sending a replacement out now should be here by Monday, I'm hoping its a hardware issue, I had one with my G2, they sent me a new one and it works great(although I'm running cm7 now) but if nothing else and the problem persists ill try rooting, she's just so against having anything done to her phone and refuses to get a custom rom because of the loockscreen puzzle piece lol
Either way thanks you guys, you've been a big help anyone have any problems like this?

Wait, so she's refusing to try a custom ROM because of her puzzle piece lockscreen?
Valhalla has that. Get her to GB, and she'll love you forever, haha.

Judging by your post, you're new to this community? Be sure to read up on how to flash on this phone and everything. You wouldn't want your girlfriend to snap your precious friend in half when you brick her phone!
Here's Valhalla by Whitehawkx. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1243826

Yep I'm new to the sgs4g community not new to the xda community I'm a proud owner of the g2 lol
I checked out the rom and my only question is when you get a message does it pop up as another puzzle piece like it does on stock that's what she loves so much lol so if I can find a custom rom that has that stock lockscreen feel I'm set, I know that stock lockscreen is because of touchwiz right?

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work. I just texted myself to test it out. I don't use that lockscreen on a regular basis, so maybe if someone else texted me, it would show up. *shrug*
I would say try your best to convince her to try out GB. The speed difference between GB and Froyo is MASSIVE.

FYI, wifi is not quite up to par on GB. Weaker signal, shorter range.

If it's your GF's phone, I wouldn't flash gingerbread just yet. It can be tricky, and it has weaker wifi connection.
I would root the phone, uninstall some bloatware, and then get the cwm recover files in place (DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER). Then flash drhonk's bali3.3UV kernel from here, and enable voodoo lagfix ext4 partitions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080871
I ran this setup for a while on my phone, and it was great - oem, fast, and stable. If she wants a bit more options and flare, you can flash the ICBINB froyo rom also.

I'm gonna have to try that when she gets the replacemnt Monday thanks again everyone you been a tremendous help

Sorry for the dub post
So if I follow what you said to do right here, she have the original android that came on the phone(puzzle piece lockscreen and all) with less bloat and what seems to be a better kernel?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

yep!
unroot with superoneclick. then you can install titanium backup and remove a lot of bloatware that comes on the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025610
Then you can install cwm recovery.zip and the recovery file - you'll need to push the files into the correct directories using a file explorer that has root access (I use "root explorer").
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
From there you boot into recovery (turn phone off, then hold volume up + volume down, and press the power button while still holding the volume buttons). choose "reinstall packages" and you then have CWM. At this point, it would be a good idea to backup your rom, using the backup feature. Then you can "install from zip file" and flash kernels, roms, and modems that are on your SD card. Here's the Bali UV kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080871
when you are done, you can even go back to superoneclick, and UNroot to lock the phone down again.
good luck!

Valhalla has the puzzle piece but its only to unlock the phone it wont tale you to messaging or missed calls

Download ODIN (DL and Instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001759)
Flash any gingerbread rom for the bootloaders (I used this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183413)
Flash the corresponding kernel here, for Voodoo, and CWM - (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032&highlight=drhonk's+KH2+voodoo)
Flash Valhalla via CWM (here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1243826)
I think that will pretty much cover it all man, Thank me later

Selling her flat out for 2 bills or did she have to renew her contract? Only asking cause I've gone to bat with TMOB for the past few months and they finally let me out of contract(after many many many elevated voice commands on my end((sorry to the poor csr)). Back on topic. Look up FBis251 guide to converting to GB. Do it. Deal with weak wifi, great battery life and insane quad scores. And for the love of all thats holly Root your girls GSII.

Former Eris folks....what ROM are you using?

Hey all,
Just found the "who's here from the Eris forum" thread and was going to post there, except it's closed.
Wondering what you former Eris folks are running for ROMs on the TBolt, how you like them and the differences you find between nanding and flashing.
Reading up on the TBolt ROMs it seems a bit more complicated than 'download and flash'
thoughts?
Thanks
~Me.
Hey man,
Not much different once you get used to CWR, instead of Amon.
Personally, I don't use/trust/like Rom Manager and just download all roms with my pc, load onto my SD and flash as normal. Took a bit to find Dalvik cache wipe but no problems since then. And I actually like the feature of having to scroll down through a bazillion "no"s to get to the flash this zip command.
I'm running Virus Sense version rom but using ADW instead of Sense and using Ziggy's kernels. I got a boot loop loading the power control zip on NonSense version so I just removed everything I don't use.
Flashed ZHP's blackedout mms and aosp dialer and I'm very happy with this beast.
I've actually been using my Eris as a music player at work, such a small screen, I think it's what is making me need glasses now, can't have anything to do with getting older.....
I had Taz's ROM on my Eris and now I am running BAMF 1.6.3nte. At first I was freaked out at not having Amon but I have been able to use CWR flawlessly so far.
Im using the broken CM7 pre-alpha as my daily driver
everything works except for 4g but that will come soon and few other items are broken but for a pr-alpha its a dam good rom
ps flash an aosp kernel too
Stock Rom here I need a Rom to come out that makes me want to root/flash my bolt. Oh well there's always tomorrow!

Just like Bimmer I do everything manually (without rom mananger). On the Eris I bounced back and forth between Tazz,s and Shed's CM builds. On the TBolt I've been pretty happy with Das BAMF roms. These TB forums are a world different than the Eris forums.

No worries at all, "chimpsnest" isn't really a very froo-froo girly name like "MrsTBoltLover" (hey, that's a good one), and my avatar is a little manly too - if I didn't disagree w/the "pinking" of sports symbols I'd throw a pinked out Bruins B up there, but I find that blasphemous
My BF calls me a phone dork and loved picking on me when I was tweaking my Eris. I tell him he's just jealous w/his Moto Droid Pro and lack of rooting and greatness I think he's just waiting for me to mess my phone up, ever the pessimist
If I do flash ROMs (which I'm starting to feel the itch to do) I think I will do it via the boot menu instead of ROM manager, so I guess I'd just do Power/Volume down to get in there, then "recovery" which gets me into CWM, then the same data wiping and dalvik wiping, then install zip from SD card and (hopefully) off I'd go.
What is it that ROM manager does - just sort of simplify the process? The fact that it's a program makes me wonder what happens if I can't get back into my phone and back into the program?
I do miss the folks from our little forum, seems we had a great crew and it's not quite the same here (still great people, but you know what I mean).
Loving the Bolt, I'm lucky to be in a 4G area 90% of the time, so it would be nice to have a ROM that has that capability.
Running BAMF 1.1 stripped....awesome!!!
Prior to that lightning rom 3.3.1 also awesome...those seem to be the 2 most stable imo

And as for cwr ..took me a little bit to get used to it but its pretty much the same as amon in theory ....a bit more shuffling around though but it seems to work just fine.

Oooh, I can flash just a kernel, hadn't thought of that! So, what has this Kernel done for ya? Do you notice differences w/it, battery life, etc? Does it mess w/4G at all?
Feels like starting the learning process all over again
FWIW I have never had an issue using rom manager on either the Fascinate or TB since moving on from the Eris. I t just does all the steps for you. Reboots recovery, wipes what needs wiping(minus your bum),flashes then reboots. It's a very handy program.
As far as the roms go I have only ever used bamf and cm7. Adryn and TDB did amazing work on the Fascinate and I trust their work. I'm also very much looking forward to what JT and Kaos have up their sleeves for this monster.
I'm not sure there is a "best" kernel out there right now as all phones react differently but once again I have great luck with both Adryn's and droids kernels.
Good luck getting your phone set up and don't be afraid of flashing due to the different recovery. While this forum is not as close nit and familiar as the Eris people, once you learn who to trust and ask questions too the support you will receive will be just as good.

I did notice battery improvement after flashing 4.3 kernel but then after the 4g outage my battery went down hill. So I won't blame the kernel, as I believe it is the network. And there has been no ill effects on 4g.

I actually like Tesla Coil a lot but BAMF has my heart right now.

About to embark on a journey...

Bought the G2X in April (my first android0, returned several, finally got a good one, never rooted any of them let alone flash ROMs, and am now about to start installing cwm via NV followed by running CM7 RC1. Wish me luck!
I would flash the latest nightly, but that's just me.
I was told to start with RC1 as it is more stable. Maybe I will do the latest nightly.
One question:
Why didn't I do this sooner?!?
Freaking awesome, and super easy to do.

Most of the time they don't think that the risk is worth it. Even after bricking a MT3G and almost bricking another (damn SPL updates and such), I still find it worth it. Alot of my friends hate on android because it's too buggy, but I find that a solid custom ROM usually fixes things.
They just don't feel comfortable with it. To each their own I guess
yea man i would flash latest nightly cuz after rc1 this has happened ( post rc), double data speeds, ttf on camera, change lockscreen pic, more stable, faster, and now we are on 2.3.5 instead of 2.3.4, a bunch of stuff man the nightlys have ben very stable
My G2x is in the mail, planning on CM7/Faux's Kernel as soon as i get it!
New question: CM7 is buggy when it comes to HDMI output - tried playing a movie I have on the sd card and it would cut out every 3 minutes or so then pop back up - so I would like to go to the rooted GB ROM. Question is do I need to do a data dump and cache dump to install that new ROM?

Just try to flash the recovery by downloading it from the website. After u flash is reboot to recovery. If the recovery for the optimus 3D will not work for your thrill, i guess it just won't load the recovery. If something goes wrong just pull out the battery. Let us know how it goes!

Ok guys, the phone was just officially released a few days ago. Hold your horses...lol! I wound up with one, because I hard bricked my Cappy over the weekend & needed a phone for the time being, while the Cappy is away being fixed, & for $99 bucks, it was cheaper than my insurance deductible.
So far, it's not bad. Kind of heavy, the 3D is quite gimmicky, I just ignore it, my Bluetooth earpiece does some strange things sometimes though (not sure of it's the phone, or the earpiece at fault) the battery is no worse than what I've experienced with the Captivate. It actually seems a little better. The camera has a flash, the pics come out nicely, it handles all of the media I've thrown at it so far, nicely, regardless of format. I get better reception than I did on the Cappy. The phone overall does a decent job, of just being a good smart phone. Regardless of official reviews of the Galaxy S II, I'll probably hang on to it, if even just for having a solid backup device (or weapon, this thing has some weight on it lol)...Would be nice to have a custom ROM running on it though...

New sgs4g user coming from LG OptT..

I've had an OptT for about a year now and well a biddy of mine is selling me a sgs...I'm not exactly new to the whole rooting and custom roms ordeal but I am new to this forum...I've seen quite a few good looking roms in the dev section (things I can't wait to try out) . I've taken a quick look thru the stickies so I hope no one feels as if I'm completely new to android considering I've done development for the G1 back in 2008-2010...anyways what all do I need in order to get the sgs4g rooted and enjoying these roms? Has anyone used gingerbreak to root there sgs4g or is everyone using one click? I haven't taken a look at gsmarena for the exact specs of the phone but I'm assuming its an armv7 because I'm coming from an armv6 device. Also the LG OptT does have a few good ICSs roms even an unofficial build of jellybean but since the device runs an armv6 processor we are missing omx forecast. Is the sgs4g missing anything? That's about all I can think of right now bit ill be scanning this forum and I hope to hear some good feedback b4 I decide to buy my buddies phone

Use "Auto" in SuperOneClick. If it ever freezes up DO NOT TOUCH! Little Zerglings are rushing inside your phone to root it.
We also have ICS and we have an upcoming major ICS update which will fix allot of issues pertaining things such as battery life.
As it is easy to hack the SGS4G it is also easy to brick, so read instructions. If you don't understand anything, read the forums, search, find out more and if you do find out your answer maybe you'll find more things than you actually need which is good. Do not ask a question unless you are sure of it. LG is different from Samsung so don't assume that because they're both android doesn't mean they're the same thing.
And also welcome to the SGS4G forums*
I took a look at gmsarena and I saw the specs..only 512mb ram with 1gb internal storage,I figured it was alittle more than that but switching from my current phone to the sgs4g is an upgrade..I have prepaid by the way,I'm guessing theres no difference....I appreciate the quick response though....
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
This phone is not exactly brickable..
Its one of the most durable phones on the market actually.
Its easy to "soft brick" but that's easily recoverable as well
Ha! This phone is as good as the newer phones. But with lower specs.
I might get the new Galaxy Nexus for the newest official Google updates. If bhundven releases the majorly updated ICS, I might keep my SGS4G for a few weeks to taste the new ICS flavor and after I get bored with it, I might sell it, either in stock form or a custom ROM.
are you sure it's the Samsung galaxy s 4g t959v?
----------------------------------------------
If helped don't be afraid to hit the thanks button it doesn't bite lol
That's great because its easy as hell to brick the LG optimus T..I bricked 2 of em...we have basebands that improve signal ie..v10 for early froyo builds and v20 series for GB and up.one thing I've noticed is there doesn't seem to be any official cm7 builds but I haven't explored every thread in the forum either (kinda hard to do on just my phone alone). Than again I don't have a computer either...I took a look at the wiki page and its full of information that is somewhat overwhelming considering its easy as hell to root my current device back in the day rooting phones was a bit more tedious but now people have created applications for that sorta thing? Another question,I've seen the phone has the option for TV out bit I've seen quite a few remarks on ICS development threads that TV out isn't working. For my current phone, development is slow considering we are on an outdated processor (armv6)...I just wanna make sure that my new phone (sgs4g) hasn't seen any slowed progress in development because I would like to start developing again...hearing about ODIN isn't my first trail,I e just never used it....currently I'm on popdog123's oxygen gb rom,I was using an ICS rom but true development for ICS on the LG Optimus T is slowly coming to a halt and were starting to see alot more themed gingerbread roms. Were also missing omx codecs for HD video playback. Its an adreno220 so for a while we never thought we would have ICS..Panorama doesn't work for LG Optimus T on ICS roms atleaat not entirely and considering it has low memory, performance does lag..I'm an advanced user with LG but completely new to Samsung devices,LG is ****ty so I'm hoping there are no barriers with the phone im about to purchase, eventually I'd like to settle for a more advanced phone but the sgs4g is a huge update considering I've never had a phone with more than 600mhtz processor either. If all of this is in any speculation of moronic, please feel free to to close thread but I have a good feeling that I've placed it in the right forum, just trying to get some good info b4 I dish out hard earned money on a slightly better phone...any suggestions on where to begin (from others other than the user who replied first, please tell me)

First you have to have access to a computer to root this thing.
We have unofficial cm7 & cm9 and
ATM we do not have TV out working on ics builds.
We have 2 one-click programs that work well for this device.
1- gremlin remover (the one i use which is an oden program)
2-heimdall one-click (never used it personally)
Both programs are also used to bring you back to stock rooted state if and when you soft brick your device.
So there's no way I can root the phone unless I had a computer with two programs you speak of? I was under the assumption that I could use superoneclick or gingerbreak to root

You still need a computer for super one click. But it is much easier to flash a custom kernel and recovery via heimdall one clicks. With SoC it takes about 10-15 minutes, with a heimdall one click its a matter of 5 minutes if you are already on Gingerbread. If not then its about 15 mintues.
That's odd, not that I don't believe you but I never used a computer to root a phone with super one click, maybe that's because I have a LG phone...I did use super one click once and gingerbreak twice

Unfortunately thereseems to be no way out without a computer
Also you don't need both programs I mentioned.....just one or the other
Ugh.....well maybe I can attempt to use my sisters computer....who knows.....so is there an updated thread with rooting instructions because after viewing the wiki page there just seems to be so many different ways of rooting bit all of em are a year old or older...

My prefered choice is to go to the dev thread and dl gremlin remover extract it and follow just the last instructions
TV Out does work on the Aries build.
OP: Look at the guide in the first link of my signature.
I have flashed custom roms to a crap ton of phones. I've gone from a Optimus V (same exact thing on a different network), all the way up to a galaxy s2 ( hercules) with, a G1, motorola backflip, motorola triumph, samsung vibrant, galaxy s 4g, lg g2x, samsung blaze, and an htc sensation and I'm sure I'm missing a few and I can say with %100 confidence the galaxy s 4g was the biggest pain in the A.
Going from the optimus to the 4g is a deceptively large jump. You're getting twice the processing power and a much better over all phone. The screen will make you weep with joy after using the optimus for so long.
I'd recommend using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765 right off the bat and then just immediately flashing from the recovery that that installs to an ics build.
I tried other methods and got stuck in a recovery loop that drove me crazy and then I found that link and it fixed all my problems and let me flash to cm9 right from it. When you flash cm9 it will update the recovery and then you have to flash it again right after a reboot.
I tossed Google Now on there and for all major appearances it acts a lot like JB. I think google now is the single major noticeable difference between ics and jb besides the saposed speed increases.
So in short, yes get the phone if you can get it for a good price. Then install ICS right away unless battery life is a huge deal breaker. If it is then there's some great GB builds, but I personally prefer the cm9 nightlies.

Former Gnex Toro user needs advice

I recently got an SGS3 as a present from my wife for my bday last month, but prior to the SGS3, I had the Gnex Toro with DroidTheory's latest Non-JB, AOKP-based rom and either IMOSEYON's Lean Kernel or Franco kernel. Now, coming to the SGS3, I haven't stayed up to date with the modding/rom'ing scene due to a death in the family, and until now, have only rooted the phone just to install TBU to restore my apps and settings.
So - I need some advice. I know that there's probably over a thousand posts about roms and kernels for the SGS3, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience/advice they'd like to throw my way for getting the most (ie battery, speed, features) out of my new phone.
Where do I begin? I thought the bootloader was locked and encrypted, but then I saw a one-button (and it was the entire screen size, but I can't remember the name) app to unlock the bootloader. I did that, but haven't experimented with any new kernels cause I'm a little dense when it comes to what all these new options are and what they mean. Anyone have a quick, high level overview and some pointers?
Thanks for your help
Jesse
First things first BACK UP your IMEI use terminal "su" then "reboot nvbackup" it backs up your imei to one of the phones partitions. The gs3 has a bug and this hopefully will fix it. TreveE also released a zip that makes a backed up zip I'd do that too. Just search for it.
First off, let me welcome you back to not only XDA but the modding/romming scene! Second off, my condolences. I hope all is well with you now though.
First things first though, rooting and unlocking the bootloader. Seems you've already taken care of that using mmmeff's app in the Play Store. This one, correct?
After that, it's all about installing a recovery (duh!). I'm using TWRP 2.2 which you can grab here.
We got recovery setup? Good? GOOD! Okay, so, something that was found as KennyCap up above said is that IMEI (how Verizon identifies your phone as being cool for school on their network) seems to disappear somewhat randomly when flashing custom roms. Luckily, most of us are reckless enough to not care, so, we've ended up with so many people losing theirs that a solution has been found! Several, actually. Here's a thread with EVERYTHING you need to know about IMEI, backing it up, and knowing how to not be that guy who ruined his present from his wife, who now despises him for wrecking his present.
After that, you're golden man. Nothing can bring you DOWN. So, we've got a bunch of options as far as performance goes. Me? I've been using CyanogenMod 10 as a daily driver since that released. Had some strange incidents on certain builds, but the 09/06 build was fine. I just switched over to ParanoidAndroid a couple hours ago, myself. Battery life seems fine so far, as good as it was on CM10 (which by the by, is freakin' insane) so I'd recommend it if you like further tweaking your phone. I'm, unfortunately, a rom kind of guy. I, by nature don't flash kernels. Because quite frankly, I don't know.. if you flash them. So I can't help you there. But, I hope that I've been of some help! Welcome back, and have fun!
until all the kinks..well most of the kinks you can never get them all.. are worked out i am sticking with a stock based. Since you wanted battery, and features i would recommend CleanROM (Current 2.1), CleanKernel(Current 1.2), and the add on pack for the rom to get some other features.
Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832070
Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850495
Add-on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854060
I agree with a stock based ROM from your described needs, but the latest cm10 is solid for me with KT kernel.
Also this post would have been better suited in the q&a section, just a heads up before people come in here flaming you.

Flamers haven't had their morning coffee yet that's why. Also, "Forrest Gump" is on tv right now so they may be distracted.

I'm here....
Did you notice the section you posted in? Releases and development only. You didn't know, but now you do!
Sorry for the death in the family, my condolences as well.
Enjoy that new S3!
P.S. I haven't had my coffee and I'm not watching Forrest Gump

Sounds like everyone's given pretty good recommendations so far, especially ZServ, props to you on that writeup.
I also came from Toro to SGS3, and I was a little gunshy to flash anything while the IMEI thing got worked out. Currently running a test build of AOKP from Xoomdev (www.blamexoomdev.com) and it's been pretty solid for me so far.
One thing to note, there are still RIL issues with AOSP roms (such as CM9/10, AOKP) that cause very ugly 3G coverage. 4G seems unaffected, but if you're in a low signal 3G area, you'll get drops like mad. Touchwiz based roms such as paranoidandroid, cleanrom, Synergy, etc don't seem to have these issues. Keep this in mind if you're in an area that doesn't get reliable 4G coverage. If you use an AOSP rom and have to rely on 3G you might get frequent data drops.
Otherwise welcome back, my condolences as well, and go have some fun.

I could have missed this as I read through the thread quickly but even if it's been said I will say it again for emphasis:
NEVER EVER FLASH A ROM OR KERNEL FOR THE i9300 (INTERNATIONAL) GS3.
Whew. Okay, I emphasize this because you said you used Franco kernel in the past. There is no version of that kernel for our phone. Flashing it will result in brick that can only be reversed by a JTAG.
Oh, and wrong section RAH BLAH ANGRY WORDS!

Thanks for the info. First, I have been done everything up to the nvram backup, but I just took care of that. It'd be nice to know from the post where the backup is kept so I could keep it offline. Hell, it'd be nice to be able to hot-swap one phone to another. I mean, with an IMEI backup, it wouldn't even matter if you bought a illegitimate phone from CL or something since you could always swap in your IMEI.
I really have never been an CM fan. I toyed with it back on my Droid X, even my GNex Toro, and just felt it was not as feature-rich as the AOKP or the custom variants. I mean, its lean, its quick, but so is AOSP, and I'm not looking for just plain vanilla. I want the bells and whistles. I like the built in rom control of AOKP as a separate settings menu item.
As far as kernels go, I'm really looking for something that gives me better control of the OC'ing and undervolting, but isn't so complicated that I need to bust out my TI calculator just to figure out settings. I like the rom control of the Franco Kernel app. I bought the app, drank the Kool Aid and have been a fan ever since, but have been skeptical, because, to be quite honest, I leave my SGS3 in Power Saver mode and truthfully, I am blown away with the battery life. The one big feature of AOKP I definitely miss is the Fast Charge option. I have 2A chargers in my car and home and would love to get back to charging the device from ~10% to full in 30 min or less. That was freakin' awesome. I'm waiting on my Anker battery, so I'd love to see a little more time squeezed out of the stock, cause that would just make the Anker 2200mah even more "yummy"
