[Q] How many of us came over from a G1?

A fun question. How many of us Sidekick 4G owners bought them to replace our rusty, err, trusty G1s? I get the feeling a lot of us made such a migration.
I held onto my G1 until last month, since I could find no other Android phone on the UMTS 1700 band with a keyboard so good. I just couldn't bear the thought of using a touch screen all day. When I saw the Sidekick's I knew I had to have one. And while I do miss that old workhorse, I've also enjoyed my time with the Sidekick. It's nice to finally have a current phone for once in my life!
I ended up selling that G1, cracked screen housing and all, to a friend for $50. Not only is it his first Android device, but also his first smart phone. With the addition of a new battery and a fresh ROM it should have another year or even two of life in it.

I had the G1 until I finally had an upgrade. Still have my trusty G1 just in case something magically goes wrong.

Didnt come straight from the g1 but had it when it first came out. I thought it was one of the cheapest built smartphones ive had but instead ended up being one of the toughest and survived many drops. i miss the g1's design. Im one of the few that thought it looked nice.

I'm seriously thinking about buying this phone... I miss my G1's kb, I've been putzing along with the og Droid for a couple years (I was living in the states). Now that I'm back in Canada, I need a replacement. I'm not thrilled with the lack of decent camera, but that sweet sweet keyboard looks oh so nice. I do a lot of remote server admin and so the keyboard is a big deal for me.
Are the ROMs any good? I don't need the fancy crap it looks like they've piled on top, just a standard type Android UI would be nice for me.
Failing this I'd probably get the Milestone/Droid 3, but it's been getting kinda meh reviews.

The ROMs aren't bad, we're still improving each release, but they're much better than stock. Not sure exactly what you like in a ROM, but as far as Froyo Touchwiz goes, these are pretty solid. If you do happen to get this phone and find that the ROM selection isn't what you are looking for, PM me and we'll see what we can do to get a ROM made that fits your desires.

Thanks, that's very generous of you! Really all I want is to use the phone as a palmtop computer... browser, email, SSH, etc. I don't care much about eye candy or special effects, speed and efficiency are my main concerns. Not so much concerned with it as a social media platform either as an IT consultant's accessory Oh, and Google Navigation!

Didn't come directly from a g1 but I bought the g1 the first day it came out, had it until cyanogen stopped supporting it, and then tried out several different phones and none of them satisfied me. I could never get used to an all touchscreen device and most keyboards were very lacking. The sidekick has the best keyboard I have ever used, I like it better than the g1's. I still keep my g1 and use it for a bluetooth keyboard on my ipad/ps3 since blueputdroid doesn't support samsung's bluetooth drivers for some reason.

Sounds just like me! I work in IT as well and use most of those apps as well, and as far as i've found, there's no issues with them, and the keyboard is an IT person's best friend.

I'm getting the Sidekick in a couple days. Coming from the Mytouch 1.2 I have a couple roms I developed in the G1 section. I was wondering if and why there is no Gingerbread for Sidekick? Just curious. Also does anyone know if CM will support it? Thanks. I'm new to the Sidekick.

There's no gingerbread for it because there's no gingerbread source. CM probably won't officially support it, as CM doesn't officially support anything Samsung other than the Galaxy S. When we get the GB source, someone (probably me) will at least try porting an unofficial CM7, but until we get the source, there's no efficient way to port it.

So Samsung wont release the source. I hope it gets released soon. If so I'd like to work with you to get a CM ROM going for it. I have two CM7 Roms in the G1 Development forums.

Odin flashes firmware like fastboot does for HTC phones (kind of).
Odin is used to restore to stock from any state other than a hard brick. It just restores system images to the partitions.
Voodoo is the set of tweaks commonly used to implement the Lagfix, aka EXT4 partitions. Voodoo ClockworkMod recovery is Red, and is implemented in the Bali kernel.
I would be open to working with you on it, as I am for most people on most projects, let me know if you ever wanna work on anything together.

Rooting sisters phone, confused

So I've been debating posting this for 2 days now for worries of being called illiterate and an idiot but this is a last ditch attempt at trying to understand the rooting process for the inspire for the sake of my sister who actually owns the device and wants it rooted and a custom ROM for a possible increase in battery life & performance possibly from a ICS ROM I personally have a Samsung gs2 & galaxy tab 10.1 and am proficient in rooting and flashing stuff on those devices, but after reading for the past few days I'very come to find out that that knowledge in no way helps me here.
What I'm trying to do is root my sisters AT&T Inspire and more than likely put a customer ROM on it.
I have read a lot of stuff here and have seen a lot of terms that are not in the Samsung world of hackory such as RUU, gold card, s-off, and hboot.
So far what I understand is a gold card is a micro sdcard that is used to gain root. I was looking at using the ace hack kit, but after reading the first few pages of the thread it seems people are having problems making the goldcard, and frankly I'm having a hard time comprehending all the stuff that seems to be in solved in this process.
So basically what I'm asking is for someone to give me a summary of what is needed to be done in order to gain root and flash custom firmware on a ATT inspire that shipped with 2.3.3. If you are just gonna tell me to go read save the bandwidth and don't bother replying as I have read. I don't want to mess up her phone as she is 17 and is her lifeblood.
I realize what I'm asking is what everyone frowns upon in the xda but I haven't been able to get what I need from reading sporadic posts in threads and the sticky in the section that has a link to a rooting guide is dead. But my sister is only in town for a short while while on spring break that's why I'm in need of help fast and can't spend more time researching.

Just use the advanced ace hack kit, its the only game in town. Just make sure you read the first post and the included manual. You need to have your system setup properly. If setup properly you'll be rooted in under 10min.
As to the goldcard it depends on the SD card used. Sometimes for what ever reason one wont work. All one can do is try a different one.

link to advanced hack kit works for me - got through the thread and read the manual seriously read the manual and of course dev can be contacted through irc channel. i was in similar position when i came to inspire after jb iphones but once you do it you'll wonder what the fuss was over.

Yeah I had a similar gut feeling when I was learning to root my galaxy s2 and once I rooted it I was like wow really that's it? I spent 2 weeks reading just about everything about it and I felt pretty comfortable doing it when I did it. However after reading and trying to figure this stuff out I still feel lost. I just can't seem to comprehend the info.
There doesn't seem to be a good thread that goes over the terms used in the process. I'm sure I could follow instructions but I like to know what I'm doing and no just blindly following instructions, so if something goes wrong I can have an idea on what's going on. Im even more nervous because its not my device.

Its not as complicated as it seams just different terms used. Like how iPhones jailbreak while we root.
Ruu-stands for rom utility update. It is a self contained program to flash stock firmware. In the gs2 I believe you guys use Odin/kies to flash stock images.
Soff- our devices come as son mebaing security on. This prevents us from flashing a custom recovery,radio,any ruu.
Once we gain soff we pretty much can do anything flashing wise.
Hboot- this is our bootloader.
Gold card- is only used once, and that's during the rooting process. The kit makes your SD card into a gold card to help flash necessary files to gain soff and root

I'm gonna try to use the ace hack kit now....hope all goes well. I have a 2gb microsd card that I'm gonna use for the gold card.
EDIT: So I forgot my laptop power cord at my apartment and I'm at my aunts for Easter dinner so I'll have to do it later. Gives me more time to try and get this stuff
So if I understand correctly the ace hack kit does the whole rooting process as well as flashing a kernel repacked with cwm? The ace hack kit does the goldcard process for me? I was thinking of running the hack kit with my freshly formatted 2gb card do her data doesn't get erased, even though I guess it doesn't matter since I have everything backed up on my PC.
After I finish using the hack kit and I'm rooted w/ cwm I can flash ROMs from cwm without doing anything else correct?
I really appreciate you guys taking the time out of your holiday to help me out with this very basic stuff, its just I can't comprehend the info, and when rooting my gs2 there was an excellent step by step thread that explained everything and gave very detailed instructions on how and why you're doing what is said.

Well if you are still debating, just follow commands in the manual. A clean environment is a must and the only preparation that the Kit needs...if you are using a non corrupted sdcard and a clean environment then you should be rooted in less than 5 minutes

I'll be using a windows 7 laptop I have uninstalled avast antivirus and killed the window defender process. I don't see anything else that is required.
Also, any recommendations for ROM/Kernel combos? I'm looking for stability and battery life with everything working(mainly camera and hspa+) I was thinking of the Aospx ics ROM because AOSP ICS is amazing I'm running AOKP on my gs2 and my phone could not run better and battery is incredible.

It will depend on the use that your sis gives to the phone and if she likes sense or also. I am using coredroid and is awesome but might not be to her...the best bet is to try as many roms and then choose. Make sure if you flash a kernel that is the correct for that Rom. AOSP Kernels do not work with sense roms...
Windows 7 should work fine with the kit....if you get stuck hit the IRC channel and we will lend you a hand.

Thanks for the input! My sister doesn't really care about sense or anything...she probably doesn't even know what sense is. She just uses her phone for social networking(ie Facebook, twitter) and she plays games like scramble w/ friends and who knows what else), and texting A LOT. She needs a working camera(at least for pictures, I understand camcorder doesn't work on asopx) A sense ROM or non-sense ROM, it doesn't matter. Me personally I like the AOSP UI but again the phones not for me. I just want stability & great battery life.

So I ran the hack kit, and it worked flawlessly. I cannot believe how easy it was! Easier than rooting my gs2! I ran it on my win7 laptop...uninstalled Avast antivirus and cleared all unnecessary processes. After it was done I flashed AOKP and now her phone is running as good as my gs2. Thanks guys for your help! I just needed that little bit of confidence boost. I was in the IRC chan and Omega helped me a bit...so big thanks to him. The EFFIN Manual couldn't have been more clear.

The Samsung Captivate - what a phone!

Two years ago, I got my first real taste of android from a friend who had a Motorola droid 2. I knew I wanted to get an android phone, and being on AT&T, the Captivate was the best phone out there. I tested it out inside the store and knew it was the phone for me. Having done my research, I knew about Samsung's pretty terrible update history which made me nervous, but I decided to go for it anyway.
Needless to say, of course samsung managed to take nearly a year to update the captovate, released on 2.1 eclair, to 2.2 froyo. I was very annoyed with samsung and started researching ways to get the update sooner. I read about rooting, but I decided against it because things seemed to work fine on the phone.
It took a while to get the courage, but I finally rooted my captivate after I was on froyo. I was surprised at how easy it was (thank you no locked bootloaders ). I started reading of roms and had no idea what they were, and the more I read about them the more confused I became with terms like kernels and modems. By the time gingerbread came out by samsung, I still hadn't learned enough about roms and simply updated through Kies Mini. I had to go through the rooting process again, and learned how to use Odin and flashed my first kernel (although I was clueless what it was).
Eventually I found that ics was released and developed on xda and knew I wanted to get it. I finally flashed my first rom after figuring out how to get cwm on the cappy. I was surprised to be getting ics so soon - especially after samsung officially said the cappy wouldn't get the update. Either samsung is just lazy or stupid if they thought the cappy couldn't handle ics. I learned about kernels and cwm and roms and eventually felt comfortable with it all for once.
Now, running the new JellyBean, I can say I am truly impressed with how far this this phone has made it. My iPod touch 2g was basically obsolete after a year and a half to 2 years. It lost support for apps and ios updates. But this wicked phone doesn't stop. It's running JellyBean, and thanks to the awesome devs on XDA, I'm sure it will get the next few android updates!

Unfortunately, I will be leaving AT&T in a few months, and will likely get the HTC evo V 4G on VM (prepaid). I will miss the XDA support and the awesome developers. Although it has great specs, it feels like a downgrade in some aspects

Same here in terms learning about android, roms, kernels, etc. Since I use the capy for work I will be using this phone for a while. Things are working so well since the Mod9 July 23rd nightly that I am afraid of going on to Jelly Bean, IT's not so much the bugs but the fact that it is working so smoothy. :good:

You said it. I love my cappy. It's definitely an awesome phone. It may not have the latest hardware, but it still proves reliable with what it has.

This is such a nice phone. The devs make sure it is always up to date so it always has the latest roms. Not to mention that it also performs great when it comes to gaming so that is a plus for gamers like me.

This is the longest time I've ever owned one phone and now that I'm running jelly bean I don't see the need to upgrade for a while
That's my main argument against IOS, what iphone will let you obtain the latest version of IOS without having to buy a brand new phone?

I upgraded from my Nokia N95 to a captivate about two weeks ago. I got the phone via Rogers for $0.01 with a 1 year plan (Their super 6GB plan) figuring I'd use it about as much as I used my N95. I've never been so happy to be so wrong!
Since then I've installed a buncha roms just messing about. Finally decided on Skanky+Devil Kernel with a overclock to1.4Ghz (oc mostly because I'm addicted to SPB 3d Shell) and I have to say - I'm totally impressed. It performs flawlessly and I'm pleased with the battery life - though I can't seem to put it down for more than a couple minutes all day long.
I was also super happy to find all the community support and information that helped me learn my way around installing mods, rooting, etc. I did so much research (mainly because I'm a cheap bastard) and I couldn't find another phone (with in the deal Rogers had) that had so many different choices for Rom's. I love jellybean and coming off a Symbian OS (N95) you can imagine how this phone has blown my mind. Android as a whole is just so awesome and I thank god I turned a blind eye to everyone I know including family members about going on a iPhone.
I recommend this phone as I can see it has at least a year or two of life before I even have to think about getting a new phone - and even then, the decision to upgrade would be purely out of my addiction to electronics.
+1 for Samsung.
+2 for a awesome community, Rom support and continue'd development for this phone.

+1 go almost everything posted so far. I really had the new Device itch recently but I nutted up and threw miui v4 on here and Wow. Why bother. Love this thing.

I can try, what version are you on right now? Stock froyo or gingerbread? Or are you on ics?
Go to settings / about phone to find out if you aren't sure.

I have been a Symbyan user for a long time, but because of this platform died decided to switch to another. I tried iPhone cause it is just popular in Russia and Sweden (my native countries). But it really made me mad. After a three days i switched to Captivate, mostly because of it's price and hardware. After installing ICS rom and Semaphore kernel it become awesome =). The only feature i missing is FM radio.

Current state of your g2x

Well as you all may know, LG claims korean devices will get ics. We have been holding our breathe for a long time, suprised we are not all dead yet. Regardless, what does everyone think about the g2x and the current development that is going on? I myself am quite frustrated with it. I can get jellybean to build but it is still very much broken, and I refuse to release something that turns my device into a paperweight. I will open source my stuff before too much longer, just to see what others can do, but I do not see many people, deving, modding or even themeing anymore.
I personally like my g2x it stomps my galaxy nexus in quadrants (which means nothing, I just like the big numbers) but it also seems to handle games alot better. I have been through 6 defective ones but, I still hang on to it. I have sold all my other devices besides my nexus and my g2x.
I am sure I got off on the wrong foot with some people, however everything I said came true. Certain teams claimed other teams work as their own and refused to submit their minute changes upstream as required by the gpl they claim protects their rebranded work and now all further development has stopped. The more people that work on something the better off the chances are for success but yea.....anywho
This is not intended to be a flame thread or an i told you so thread. This is intended to find out what everyone thinks of the current development and state of their phone. I want to know what the average user would like to see. What is everyone looking for besides the perfect jellybean/ics rom because none of them will be perfect untill LG gets off its ass.

I don't mind if I don't get ICS, cm7 is stable as hell (using kameask or however you spell it), plus faux keeps up with kernels.
V6 super charger makes it twice as snappy, and testing out swapper again just to see.
But regardless, this phone does everything it needs to do at a very good pace. I don't mind if it doesn't get ICS . There isn't much benefit over it then what we have now.

I love the phone and the support from the community but despise the neglect from LG/nVidia. I was running different ROMs until I needed full bluetooth support on the v21y baseband so now I'm back on stock Gingerbread :-\
I bought this phone on contract with intentions of it being future proof and lasting the full 2 years. A year into my contract and the specs are still great on paper. A little bit more RAM would be nice but I can work with it. Just please LG, hook us up with ICS. I don't really want to cough up 400 bucks for a Galaxy Nexus...

I love my g2x...I have been messing around with Harsh's kernel for CM 7...(I even got a OC/UV version...hehe)...I thought about making a CM7 kang (with tweaks and what not)...or an AOSP GB ROM...but right now I'm in school...and debating if I should put the time and effort into development...I don't mind...I'm still learning about how kernels works...and would love to develop something (or at least help out) for our devices...

I like my g2x a lot. Bought it off eBay 7 months ago and have been impressed with the power this thing has. I am very distrought that we are 2 versions of android behind. Yes we have ICS but its not to the level of perfection I need and thus am still on GB. This is my 3rd android phone and I have never fallen this behind thanks to devs of xda.
I understand the driver/source code issues that are holding us back. If we can get a port of our Korean counterpart's ICS, then I will most likely just hold onto this phone for awhile longer.
My contract us up in 3 months and I could save money by going to a monthly plan. If we can't get fully functioning ICS though, I'll be hopping on the note 2. I'm getting the note 2 regardless, but would just like to wait till the right deal comes along instead of paying top dollar.

There are still some ports showing up, but I see 2 things being a barrier to more/better dev activity -
1) Driver availability. Both ICS and GB. ICS ROMs are stuck on things needing HW acceleration, for example. The Froyo camera is almost fully ported to 2.3+ but not exactly. JB - even more so.
2) In call BT audio for new BB. Even though we can flash to have custom ROMs work with v21y, this function is still not working. That is a big reason why I have quit flashing the past few months.
I do like the phone and will keep it until it breaks.

I love my g2x but its lagging seriously since i got it up too 132 using gps but running your rooted stock. My phone only likes stock roms cm based just force close everything. But ill keep it tell it dies

I don't attempt to run ics or jb roms anymore, they still seem unstable. But I am quite content with gb, though I still haven't found a rom+kernel that solves everything. Either it lags or I get SOD/overheating. So far I like cm7 nightlies best, don't know which kernel to go with though.

Galaxy Nexus is on it's way. My G2X is just too buggy, but I am going to keep it as a backup. Plus I want to go to an unsubsidized plan as the rates are much cheaper. For the same price I pay now I can get unlimited talk, text and data, plus hotspot (which I am not paying for now but have been warned that it will soon be an additional $15/month). I make back the cost of the GNEX in one year with the better service and reduced rate.

I like Kwes and BuruRom rooted stock in addition to Temasek's CM7. I've got my phone figured out. If/when (on CM7 based roms) data drops or MMS bugs cause me frustration, I just restore Nandroid back-ups of those rooted stock version(s). If I need to drive an HD movie out the HDMI port for my kids in the backseat, I have better results with Morfic's kernel/CM7. Yeah, the phone runs hot (gets unstable) when pushed hard. It still does all I ask of it - day in, day out. I plan to make it work till I am eligible to upgrade. I hope my replacement for my G2x won't need to be any bigger. I miss the days of being able to forget my cell phone is in my jeans pocket!

I am waiting for a new nexus phone to come out and i am going to buy that and ditch the g2x. I am still running Bionix Reloaded because it is the best rom I have found to date and I have no reason to switch. I tried some ICS roms but my battery died in a few hours and I barley got a data connection. I appreciate all of the hard work and development with the G2X but LG killed it by not releasing drivers. I find it really sad because the G2X is such a powerful phone. I think it is still competitive with current phones that are being released with the software being the only exception. I told myself I will never purchase a new phone unless it is a nexus phone due to the fact that they will get updates.
LG definitely lost my business for a long time.

I would love to develop for the G2x(I'm learning, but just barely) , but I can't see much that I am capable of doing right now. I'm gonna cook versions of CM7 and play with building kernels. We are in a holding pattern until the nVidia drivers come forward or the CM7 bluetooth thing gets resolved.

Going to keep the phone until at least Christmas, even later probably. My Nexus 7 has made my g2x have great battery life!

Lol... I got my nexus 2 or 3 weeks ago and swore I would sell my g2x ( at one point I was contemplating having my friends form a firing line directly at the phone. Then sending the video to lg and nvidia, interrupted by Linus giving them the finger.) But I haven't. I really love the phone to be honest. I was lucky enough to get one without major screen bleed and it has only locked up on me twice (PC/UV kernels).. I'm seriously contemplating keeping it as a back up phone.
I do wish that nvidia and lg would hurry up with the update so I could play around with fully functioning jb Roms, but since I know nothing about coding, I'm no help.
I also notice fewer and fewer devs working on it. I hope they are just waiting for the drivers tho.
So all in all, I still have the phone, even though I have moved on.

Thanks for OP posing this topic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors in G2X sections, it has benefit me as a Wind Mobile customer in Canada.
I am am not looking for the next new Android OS, I just want a custom ROM that has little or no bloat-wear that is very stable and utilizes the phone's fullest potential. LG /or Wind Mobile has abandon the upgrade to our phone and it is stuck at 2.2.2. We screamed, we yelled, we petitioned and its not going any where. Therefore I will not buy/support any Korean manufactured phones in the future.
So, please keep up the good work.

Agreed, the devs here have done a wonderful job. Though I don't blame them for moving to another device.

I am running ics(hellfire sandwich) on g2x. Except the camera everything seems to work. Waiting for jellybean. I dont think i will change my phone atleast this year. All the games run well. I am dissapointed cuz we are being ignored by lg and nvidia.

HTC vs Samsung?

Not looking for a Who's Better war here. Just wondering if getting a custom ROM onto an HTC phone is really as hard as some Samsung people make it sound.
Getting an upgrade in mid-January, trying to survive by my stupid ass Samsung Infuse 4g until then, which is gradually falling apart. I was looking into either the Note II or HTC One X+. I like the unibodyness of the 1X because I have a habit of dropping everything I pick up, but I like removable battery, microSD, and SAMOLED+ screen of the Note II.
It's kind of down to will the process of getting and changing ROMs on an HTC piss me off even more than Samsung(I'd have to use odin to return to stock every other time I flashed a ROM because it would mess something up)?

Once you are rooted and have an unlocked bootloader flashing roms is pretty simple on the one x. Im a noob and haven't had issues flashing different roms.

You wouldn't have to use Odin every other time. Samsung is pretty simple.
After having an HTC, I wouldn't say it was really all that much trouble. The only thing is s-off or not making the difference. IIRC, it made kernel flashing a pain not having s-off at the beginning.
Neither of them is a bad choice IMHO if you are a flashaholic.

Well with the one x + since HTC only let's you unlock the bl and that program doesn't allow you to install custom kernels.... So on the one x+ you'd have to fast boot flash the boot IMG every time you flash a Rom ... Until s-off that's how it wil be on most new HTC devices

There are a few extra steps to unlock the bootloader on HTC devices. Plus if you are on AT&T, you currently have to temp root and get SuperCID in order to unlock the bootloader.
And as also mentioned on the 1.14 hboot (which comes with the newest 2.20 AT&T firmware) you have to flash boot.img separately using fastboot.
But its my personal belief that anyone that wants to flash custom ROMs on phones should have some level of knowledge and skill in order to do so, or they shouldn't be messing with such things to begin with. None of these things are that hard if you do a bit of research beforehand, and follow instructions properly. Some people seem to make things out as harder than they really are.
Bottom line: if you really want a custom ROM on either brand phone, its really not difficult, and you shouldn't let a couple extra steps here and there deter you.

I have both the HOX (Not the HOX+) and the Note 2. I do have to admit that rooting the N2 with Odin was super easy. Having said that, I will have to echo what redpoint said before. If anyone has any business looking to root, flash or modify their phone in any way, they should put the effort into using ADB, the Android SDK and potentially HTCDev (if on a HTC device). IMO, dumbing things down too much results in way too many bricks and leads to "how do I unbrick my phone" or "I flashed a Vzn ROM on a AT&T phone and now I'm stuck" threads.
In terms of specs, my HOX beats the N2 in almost all day-to-day aspects. Screen is sharper and more true to colour, camera sensor on the N2 makes things look washed out and yellow; whereas the sensor on the HOX is more true to what you would see with your own eyes. Sure the battery and SD card are a bonus, and trust me, I wish the HOX had those, but we have OTG now and it effectively boosts the capacity of the phone. Touchwiz has gotten better but Sense just looks more refined, especially with Sense 4 and above, not as laggy as Sense 3.5 and below and doesn't take as much resources.
So really, if you want to learn a thing or two about the flashing and modding community, take the HOX+ as it will force you to learn and make you a better person on XDA. If you just want a phone that makes it easy to flash things, take the N2.

I'll agree with the comments above. You need to know/learn certain things to root and rom the One X, but those are things you really need to know anyway.
Personally, I wish there were fewer "one-click" and "all-in-one" toolkits floating around because they make it much easier for people to get in over their heads.
One-click or manual, you should never be doing anything to your phone unless you understand what you're changing and how to undo it if necessary. There are few things that annoy me more than "How do I go back to stock?" threads. If you don't know that when you start you shouldn't be rooting.

Very much agree. The OP isn't asking for any one-click solutions in particular. But far too many times, I've seen people on here begging for one-click solutions, instructional videos, etc. when the means already exist and are not at all difficult. Seeking such things usually indicates a lack of desire to research and do any actual learning. One clicks are convenient. But if you absolutely need them, you probably shouldn't be rooting or flashing to begin with.

I had to do a **** ton to get my Kindle Fire rooted. I had to download the android SDK, make a windows XP virtual machine, type out hundreds of things into a command prompt, mostly because it didn't work the first 11 times. Then I had to download more stuff and run more commands to get the FFF kernel on it (to keep it from killing itself). Is it going to be harder than that? (also had to do that to my infuse when I accidentally put unrooted GB on it, since oneclick doesn't work for GB sometimes)
Also a couple years ago my Gtablet wasn't being very nice. I figured it out, almost bricked it, and managed to return it to stock well enough that they accepted a return when the charging port farted out.

I don't remember having so much issue with my fire. S-off depends on quite a bit. Some phones have only taken a few weeks, but the rezound took months along with vivid and raider. Hboot updates can affect this as well if htc discovers holes first. It's a toss up.

Play with the phones stock. See what floats your boat. I went with s3 instead of either Note 2 or One x+. Just the right size and screen is well enough along with battery. Sense is heavier than touchwiz. Keep that in mind when thinking skin features if you stay with stock based ROMs. AOSP was my thing coming from Nexus.

How am I supposed to play with them stock? No one I know has either, and the AT&T store isn't going to take out 2 brand new phones and give them to me to play with.

Actually, all AT&T stores should have sample phones to play with. Otherwise, go to another store or Best Buy or Wal-Mart to get an idea.

Went to the att store. No matter how many times I see the note ii it feels big as f**k. They both seem pretty nice to me. Tried an siii just cuz and it was noticeably choppier with half the cpu. The note ii might have been a very tiny bit laggier but that's just tw.

Might go with the one x+ just because of 64gb and better build quality slightly.

HTC makes better hardware with useful features. Samsung builds device with features that make you say WOW, but many aren't that useful.
