Former Eris folks....what ROM are you using? - Thunderbolt General

Hey all,
Just found the "who's here from the Eris forum" thread and was going to post there, except it's closed.
Wondering what you former Eris folks are running for ROMs on the TBolt, how you like them and the differences you find between nanding and flashing.
Reading up on the TBolt ROMs it seems a bit more complicated than 'download and flash'
thoughts?
Thanks
~Me.

Hey man,
Not much different once you get used to CWR, instead of Amon.
Personally, I don't use/trust/like Rom Manager and just download all roms with my pc, load onto my SD and flash as normal. Took a bit to find Dalvik cache wipe but no problems since then. And I actually like the feature of having to scroll down through a bazillion "no"s to get to the flash this zip command.
I'm running Virus Sense version rom but using ADW instead of Sense and using Ziggy's kernels. I got a boot loop loading the power control zip on NonSense version so I just removed everything I don't use.
Flashed ZHP's blackedout mms and aosp dialer and I'm very happy with this beast.
I've actually been using my Eris as a music player at work, such a small screen, I think it's what is making me need glasses now, can't have anything to do with getting older.....

I had Taz's ROM on my Eris and now I am running BAMF 1.6.3nte. At first I was freaked out at not having Amon but I have been able to use CWR flawlessly so far.

Im using the broken CM7 pre-alpha as my daily driver
everything works except for 4g but that will come soon and few other items are broken but for a pr-alpha its a dam good rom
ps flash an aosp kernel too

Stock Rom here I need a Rom to come out that makes me want to root/flash my bolt. Oh well there's always tomorrow!

Lol chimp everyone thinks Ur a dude

Just like Bimmer I do everything manually (without rom mananger). On the Eris I bounced back and forth between Tazz,s and Shed's CM builds. On the TBolt I've been pretty happy with Das BAMF roms. These TB forums are a world different than the Eris forums.

I'm waiting for something to come along like xtrSense or xtrRom... so I can flash it and forget about it because everything just works.
I also don't have experience with CWR... I liked Amon

No worries at all, "chimpsnest" isn't really a very froo-froo girly name like "MrsTBoltLover" (hey, that's a good one), and my avatar is a little manly too - if I didn't disagree w/the "pinking" of sports symbols I'd throw a pinked out Bruins B up there, but I find that blasphemous
My BF calls me a phone dork and loved picking on me when I was tweaking my Eris. I tell him he's just jealous w/his Moto Droid Pro and lack of rooting and greatness I think he's just waiting for me to mess my phone up, ever the pessimist
If I do flash ROMs (which I'm starting to feel the itch to do) I think I will do it via the boot menu instead of ROM manager, so I guess I'd just do Power/Volume down to get in there, then "recovery" which gets me into CWM, then the same data wiping and dalvik wiping, then install zip from SD card and (hopefully) off I'd go.
What is it that ROM manager does - just sort of simplify the process? The fact that it's a program makes me wonder what happens if I can't get back into my phone and back into the program?
I do miss the folks from our little forum, seems we had a great crew and it's not quite the same here (still great people, but you know what I mean).
Loving the Bolt, I'm lucky to be in a 4G area 90% of the time, so it would be nice to have a ROM that has that capability.

Running BAMF 1.1 stripped....awesome!!!
Prior to that lightning rom 3.3.1 also awesome...those seem to be the 2 most stable imo

And as for cwr ..took me a little bit to get used to it but its pretty much the same as amon in theory ....a bit more shuffling around though but it seems to work just fine.

Hey Chimp, I'm just running stock root with Adrynalyne's 4.4.7 kernel. It's definitely good to see so many eris folks here. Right now I haven't flashed any custom roms so I can stay away from crack flashing. We'll see how long that lasts, lol.

Oooh, I can flash just a kernel, hadn't thought of that! So, what has this Kernel done for ya? Do you notice differences w/it, battery life, etc? Does it mess w/4G at all?
Feels like starting the learning process all over again

FWIW I have never had an issue using rom manager on either the Fascinate or TB since moving on from the Eris. I t just does all the steps for you. Reboots recovery, wipes what needs wiping(minus your bum),flashes then reboots. It's a very handy program.
As far as the roms go I have only ever used bamf and cm7. Adryn and TDB did amazing work on the Fascinate and I trust their work. I'm also very much looking forward to what JT and Kaos have up their sleeves for this monster.
I'm not sure there is a "best" kernel out there right now as all phones react differently but once again I have great luck with both Adryn's and droids kernels.
Good luck getting your phone set up and don't be afraid of flashing due to the different recovery. While this forum is not as close nit and familiar as the Eris people, once you learn who to trust and ask questions too the support you will receive will be just as good.

I did notice battery improvement after flashing 4.3 kernel but then after the 4g outage my battery went down hill. So I won't blame the kernel, as I believe it is the network. And there has been no ill effects on 4g.

[Q] Best "Everyday Work" Rom

My employer just purchased an AT&T Captivate and loves it. He has already loaded it with apps and I flashed the overclock kernal (1.2) to it to make it a little bit snappier. He uses his phone and Galaxy Tablet for work and is interested in trying out a rom because he isn't too happy about the interface. I have the Droid X and that is the entire reason that he wanted a Droid phone. Anyway, he is addicted now and I am not too sure about the Captivate and don't want to make a mistake for obvious reasons, but would like to "hook him up" with a good rom. Any suggestions? I would like to put it on using Clockwork Mod, he just purchased it 2 days ago off of the market and I would like for him to see that he can actually use it. Oh, the phone is at 2.1, rooted with z4root and the 1.2 kernal.
He also has a friend that claims to have a Captivate overclocked to a stable 1.4? I have done A LOT of reading and short of trying something out on the phone, I am as ready as I can be! I have made a nandroid backup of the phone!
Thanks for any expert help out there!
You will come to find out that these threads get locked all the time because what might be good for one phone is not for another. Unfortunately I could suggest say Cognition because it works great on my phone, but his phone might not be stable. Same if I said to use Doc's rom. It really depends on if he wants to stay on a Captivate rom vs. an I9000 rom. Each has pros and cons and the best way to chose is read about each rom available and just test.

Yeah that was kind of what I was getting at with my explanation. Thanks for stating that because I personally have not had any issues, but I know people do with certain Rom's. That is why these which is best threads really are not good for knowing what is best on each phone.

Setirons kernel goes up to 1.6 actually but there are not many captivates out there that can handle even the 1.4. Mine is only able to run 1.3 stable. Trial and error. Also you have to remember the captivates battery life is not the greatest stock so add an oc'ed kernel and battery is gonna drain faster.

I think you will find quite a few people who agree with me here. Every custom rom I have tried has bugs that stock doesn't have. And I hate that the answer to that is to flash the new version of the rom every week. Stuff like media volume, battery life and these so called GPS "fixes"
Stock + root + lagfix - bloatware = best combination for reliability and full functionality IMO
I will continue to try custom roms, maybe this will change in the future

What Rom did you download? It depends on if it has a Voodoo lag fix, which you would have heard the voice or if it is a lag fix you need to enable. Go into Recovery and see if there are any additional menus like CWM and Lagfix or something like that.
on my 1007 batch captivate i find non oc'ed i9000 roms work the best

I do agree with you. Until we get a 2.2 rom based off a CAPTIVATE NON-BETA 2.2 Build, I am sticking with 2.1. Maybe a ROM based off Armani would work OK, but so far all the ROMs based off i9000 or Captivate 2.2 betas leave me wanting.
I use one for a while and find some little irritations that i just can't stand -so i go back to 2.1.
I know the Devs are trying, but we need 2.2 source for captivate to really have some rock solid roms. Samsung still says it is on its way, so I will still patiently wait - i have other toys to play with too.
Thanks to all. After bricking it twice, once requiring one click odin I finally got it. Funny thing is the rom didn't get me, it was the theme posted right under, it was a sic apple! Anyway thanks to the great people who take the time to write the tutorials and take their time to help a complete stranger. I can only continue to learn so that I can repay the favor by helping others. Thanks again!!

Once MIUI and CM7 have officially released theirs and possibly others come along I'll just make a new poll because I'm sure things will change drastically at that time.

Its mostly Perfect
Been using Perfect Storm and have had a great time with it so far. Rarely any issues, unless 4g is down or slow in the area. Which is, unfortunately, too often so far.
I have used every single rom listed above, and the one I have stuck with is The Perfect Storm. But I am sure that once Miui is out, that will be my rom of choice.i used Miui for the motorola droid and loved it.
I have tried several roms but i keep going back to The Perfect Storm. I have never had any major issues with it and things that do need tweaking are always being worked on. I want to try CM but it is in too early in development for my tastes. I will eventually try it but probably return to The Perfect Storm.

Best rom for the G2x?

Ok, normally its a no brainer as im used to CM7 on the G2, but i have been reading there is a lot of bugs with it (i have not read since nightly release 17 or so and i think its up to 30 or something around that now so i gotta catch up a bit i just got the phone today). I also read that eaglesbread or something like that is mentioned all over the place. normally i would not ask this question, but with this phone there is a lot of issues and want to clarify everything.
im an avid CM7 user, so trying other roms makes me nervous, so overall what has been the best ROM where everything works (gps, wifi, 4g, reboots, etc etc etc)
I would also like a rom with an overclockable kernel built in, as im kinda nervous about flashing kernels, but please feel free to share combos of roms and kernels that work outstanding as well. again, im used to a G2, so over there i dont ask this question, as i started and will continue to use CM7 on my G2.
my G2x is already rooted.

lol, sadly in the back of my mind, thats what i was thinking.
usually before i buy a phone, first thing i look for is how easy it is to root, then i look at hardware, then roms and stability. as you can tell, i have been trolling the G2x forums for almost 2 weeks now looking around and have not seen anything that is straight forward like on the G2, but i also got the G2 in feb 2011, so it was already out for a while prior to my purchase compared to this phone has been out for what 3-4 weeks now?
my initial plan was to stick with stock rom, just root it and change the font and remove some bloatware and wait for the official GB update and install it manually from one of our great developers on this site
my device has very very minor screen bleed at each of the 4 corners and even that was hard to find, screen build quality seems good and all day under moderate use has not locked up on me. i will have to figure out why wifi was having an issue with me, but my G2 was also have wifi lockups that it never had before so it may be an issue on my end. but 4G connectivity has been working 100%.

If you're a Cm fan, now's the time to jump on board. #34 is fairly stable. I use it as my day to day. The battery readings are still f'd up something major. Bionix is a really nice rom. Smooth and clean, and really no major bugs that I noticed. I rocked that for about 7 days, in between #26 and #33 CM. The battery goes fast with Bionix however...if the reading is, in fact, correct.

Nonsense!
I've been using Eagles Blood 1.04 Froyo for about a week now and its been great. I chose this one because it looks stock and I like that (black status bar is a nice mod too). Everything has worked fine: wifi, calls, GPS, 4G, good battery life, etc. I tried a couple Gingerbread variants but I had too many issues -- freezes, major keyboard lag, GPS not locking on. There are some freezes with any of the roms when you use the kernels but what do you expect when you overclock to 1.5? From my experience the most stable set up for me is running stock froyo or EB froyo, but I always change my mind and go to GB and CM7 so go figure. Mind you the freezes for me are about 3 times a day and are annoying but the trade off IMHO is worth it

You should be much more concerned about overclocking your device than flashing a kernel. You really don't have much to fear, just dont get careless.
CM is a crowd favorite but its not for me so I dont think you would benefit from my opinion on the available roms.
I just encourage you to take a deep breath and start flashing rom to rom. You just might find that you like something else a lot more.

First Root

Well lol it took me several hours to complete but I finally got everything downloaded and back to the way I wanted. I got root, installed Gingerbread,Gingeritis and then the mr2.5 radio. Everything seems to be working pretty good. I dont ever show 3g its always 4g, not that Im complaining but is that the way its supposed to be? Are there any extras tweaks that I can add that havent from the original? Sorry first Rom on this phone and there is 500 pages on this particular ROM.
if you are in an area that has LTE fully up then you won't see 3g till you leave the area and make it to one with no 4g
Just like would it help if I change the settings in sysctl config? The current settings I pull up are different from most other Roms I have loaded such as free memory, dirty ratio, backround ratio and vfs cache. Ok well I read about 3 other Roms that are gingerbread based and wondering if they can give there experience on them?

[Q] Best ROM for the MT.

I'm coming from LG Revolution land and my girlfriend has the MT. She wants her phone to be like mine and be able to tether, get rid of the dumb VM boot animation (and the power off animation if possible), and have a different theme more like mine which is kindof like GB but at the same time completely different. Any help would be awesome.
Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me.
Also, I'm a major fan of the thanks button and I hit it everytime someone helps me out.
Let's see...
PunkROM has a couple extra themed apps and in some respects looks more like Gingerbread and sometimes a little different; it's also been out longer than mine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262589
I built Black Lightning off Gingerbread (and PunkROM!) as a base, and integrated the safest and most stable-looking mods. So it's minimal, but theoretically powerful too if it needs to be.

Princely ROM has a Gingerbread-themed version. I can't say much about it because I haven't used it (much) and remember even less.

And... that's about it. There are other ROMs but

Let's see...
PunkROM has a couple extra themed apps and in some respects looks more like Gingerbread and sometimes a little different; it's also been out longer than mine.

Hey thanks. Sorry about the wait on the reply. I don't check the mt forum very often. I'll probably be doing this tomorrow so be ready for some questions lol. Also, what is the most updated version of cwm for this phone?
Sent from my revolting revolution. Powered my mtmichaelson.
It's 5.x and also around here somewhere.

Just downloaded it. Thanks. Will have to wait to put it on the phone though.
I just installed CM7 and its amazing, I cant believe how functional it is already. Pretty much everything works.
MIUI is the best
Sent from a amazing Ipad 2
I've tried them all except for punk and its come down to bouncing back and forth between cm7 and miui. why would you settle for froyo when gingerbread is so stable now? For a minute miui was the best but now that the beta cm7 are fully functional and butter smooth I am finding myself less inclined to flash and that is amazing! Ruined my Samsung captivate while I was still learning, be very careful going back to froyo roms from gingerbread on that one. Darkys killed it! My Triumph however seems unbrickable and is overclocked and stable. The stock rom was a joke and I got rid of that clumsy bastard the third day. Thanx to all the devs for working hard and kikin ass!

In CM7 - You don't--at this time anyways--unless you don't mind certain things not working since the only kernel is old and outdated at this time or unless you build your own OC kernel for CM7.
There's a couple of OC kernels available for FROYO roms atm. Just check the Dev section.
I use no frills PC. It's free on the market

Cm7 is pretty good although still in beta stages. But that means it can only get better

CM7 or MIUI are good ROMs, now they have worked out most of the bugs for this phone besides HDMI and something with camera mirror.
I switched over from the Optimus V and I have a gtablet, im really pleased by CM7 on this phone. I haven't had any problems at all, and the battery life with the last two releases on CM7 is great.
I will try the MIUI ROM as well though, I just chose CM7 because I have had prior experience with it.
I've never had any problems with my phone on the stock-ish ROM, but then again even on my desktop Skype appears to be mirrored (although the other side is okay)... from what I've heard, this is the way desktop Skype works.

I believe the HDMI and Mirroring problem are the custom ROM bugs, but I didn't stay on stock ROM longer then one day to find out how it was.
I am used to rooting and custom ROM's now, for me it's interesting to try different things out customizing my phone.
Edit: sorry for the confusion if I implied that HDMI and Mirroring on the camera are stock ROM bugs.
I'm refusing to switch to the Gingerbread Cyanogen mod simply because it doesn't have hdmi output. Even though I can't use the HDMI output anyway. There's probably a pill to alleviate that.

I'm refusing until you can use wifi with bluetooth, and the niggling audio bugs I keep reading about go away.
I hear that the gingerbread development is winding down now, so we may just be stuck with current cm7 and miui for a while...without fixes.
If I could just figure out what is killing battery so much faster than my optimus V, I'd be happy....
b_randon15 has a newer cm7 kernel that he claims takes care of the wifi/bluetooth issue. I'd give it a try, but I cant get clockwork to work!

I used both last night simultaneously with that kernel. Worked fine
