The speaker on my fuze doesn't really work unless I sometimes tap it lightly, and even then it crackles. it started happening suddenly a few days ago. its really annoying because I can't hear incoming calls anymore, and the speakerphone feature doesn't work either. I'm using NATF's 3.4 ROM, and have been since it came out, but this only started suddenly. I've noticed a small "popping" noise ever time I get an incoming text/call/ or some type of incoming signal.
I think its obvious that this is a hardware problem. If I remember correctly, I think HTC devices come with a 1 year manufactuer's warrenty. Maybe I can make use of it?
Would I also have to unflash the phone and bring it to factory settings?
bump? can someone please give me some advice?
same problem...
speaker
Same problem, speaker stops working then works.
same problem, Mine finally went out all together, and I can only hear it when my ear is RIGHT NEXT TO THE SPEAKER....its very low...I need to go ahead and try to get a warranty replacement.
I suggest contacting ATT ASAP. even if you didn't purchase a replacement plan, HTC provides a warrenty for a certain amount of days. As long as your phone isn't otherwise damaged you can send it back
I did it, and got a newphone in about 4 days (though you can get expedited shipping for $12)
So I think that my mic died and I'm looking to see if anyone else has experienced this.
1.People on the other end can't hear me, I can hear them fine.
2. When I've recorded a video, the sound playback was nothing but a static, hiss.
I've made no changes whatsoever to the device in a few weeks or so. I've gone through all the settings that I can think of, but I'm still taking suggestions. Thanks gang

I had this happen on my incredible from time to time and a restart would resolve it.

i had this same problem. I called Verizon and they overnighted me a new one, no charge to me, I just had to get the old one back to them in 5 days. They sent a label with it as well. They said they were going to send me a like new replacement. I said I wanted a new one and they said they would send one. It came in OEM packaging, just phone and back cover. whether its new or 'like new' it was immaculate.
I've rebooted a few times thinking the same thing.
I did have my Dinc replaced when the external speaker fried, but that was kind of a progressive failure.
Any more thoughts or ideas are welcome.

So I tried using the speach to text, and there's noresponse from the mic. This is just a drag.
Bolted
Well I've tried the voice search and that works. Now the speech to text works as well actually that's what I'm using to make this post. This is just weird. If it weren't so late I could call somebody to test it and see if they can hear me now.

Latest: So, this all started yesterday. I flashed an updated radio and the problem continued. This morning I was able to flash a corrected radio update and so far have been able to make two consecutive, successful and troublefree voice calls. I hope that was all there was to it (crosses fingers, knocks on wood, etc.).
Bolted
I've got a friend who has this issue. What radio did you use to fix it.
It's not fixed, I'm still trying to sort it out. For a time I thought that it may have had something to do with the headphone jack, but it wasn't.
My next random thought was to try a different kernel. This one: a.zip seems to be working so far. I haven't had but maybe two or three calls since flashing it and no need to call anyone. Every once in a while I'll do a Voice Search, or a Voice to Text text message, and it's worked. I'll try a Voice Recording or Video as well.
The only other thing that I can think to do is call Verizon and say, Hey, manufacture's warranty.
Before I forget, the kernel is one of Adrynalnye's. Let me know how things go with your friend's device.
Talked with Level 2 tech support and the guy pretty much said that there's nothing that he can do and it certainly sounds like a bad mic. New device will be here tomorrow. Here's a Blinding Flash of the Obvious though, meanwhile I can just use my Bluetooth earpiece...duh. lol
Well, ive been having signal/call quality problems and a broken speakerphone so I decided to exchange the phone for a brand new one.
On this new phone the speakerphone still doesn't work (the other person can't make out what im saying at all). Both phones have had this same problem, why does HTC not fix this?
By dialing *#*#4636#*#* I have switched the network to edge only and now get 3 bars instead of 1 in my house. Im hoping this fixes the call quality problem Im having.
Depending on how my call quality is over the next week, I may go back and see if I can pay the difference and get an Atrix.
Tell them you're having signal issues @ home and you'd like one of the microcells. That will alleviate your signal issue while there. The speaker phone, I dunno, mine has worked just fine on both of my Inspires.

Ive read different reviews and it seems very hit or miss as to whether or not they will give you one for free or charge $100-$150. Do you have any experience with it?
Called ATT, they sent updates to my phone supposedly, I seem to be maybe getting 1 more bar in H+ but not consistently. He told me to call a store and tell them you're having problem and ask about the microcell. Would be nice to get that for free, but still bummed about my speakerphone.
if you've only got one bar of signal, it could be the reason your call quality could be so low- may not be much an issue with speakerphone at all... does the other side hear you without trouble when using a headset or the phone itself?
and i'd assume you're using the stock rom that at&t ships- maybe you could install the volume+ app and tweak your speakerphone settings?
Which setting cuz for me it just yes back to hspda

The speakerphone doesn't work even when I have 3-5 bars. I will be talking to them fine, and then once its on speaker they say "what what, i cant really hear you" and then once i take speaker off they can hear me fine. Both stock phones have been like this? I will check out the volume+ app

speakerphone TERRIBLE
I have also had major problems with the speakerphone on my phone since I bought it. I think I am right around the 30 day return point, but I have been to lazy to return it to stock and take it back. Not sure if it is a hardware problem or if the phone is just like this. I asked my friend who has the same phone, and he said he didn't notice a problem.
It's like the mic input is way too sensitive, so when I put someone on speakerphone whatever they say gets looped back into the mic and echos VERY loudly back to them. Absolutely impossible to have a conversation with speakerphone on which is very annoying because I prefer it most of the time.
I can also notice that the problem exists when I use Soundhound. I can play a song at an extremely low volume and the input meter on Soundhound is always completely maxed out. If the song is at a normal volume, it often won't be able to detect which sound it is because it must be coming in too loudly. So I have to turn the volume way down and try again.
Is this not a normal thing on the HTC Inspire? Has no one noticed this? Or am I having some sort of hardware problem?
Can anyone think of a way to fix it, such as a mic input level adjust?
Thanks.
I exchanged my phone 3 times at ATT because of cell signal and call quality to later find out they are working on the towers in my area - so they say. I had 3-4 bars of service about 2 months ago and now i'm down to 1-2.
In the end, I threatened to switch to verizon and ended up walking out of the store with a free microcell. - I've also been on a ATT Premier Business Acct. for the past 5 years - so that might of helped.
Call quality on the Microcell is superb. Some of my text messages don't want to go out the first time and I have to resend but other then that its pretty good.

- Also, depending on your ROM, Radio, RIL combination - you may have the wrong Radio for the ROM you are using. I had a few different ROMS installed and the radio provided clear call quality on my end but on receiving end they stated that there was a echo. I switched radios and flashed the appropriate RIL and the problem went away.

The mic for the speaker phone is on the back.. when you use the speakerphone, you have to talk to the back of your phone.. not the bottom.. if you talk to the bottom mic they wont be able to hear you. This has been talked about on these boards countless times. search
My dad recently got a HTC incredible S and its generally OK
however its been playing up, after a random period of time on the call the person on the other end of the phone (usually me) has audio issues.
Between 30 seconds and 15 minutes.
I spoke to him for an hour yesterday and had to redial on average every 5 minutes.
I get a very strong echo and he becomes really really loud and distorted.
If i hangup straight away and redial its ok.
If i stay on the call eventually it drops out and his phone can no longer make or receive calls for a few minutes (incoming goes straight to voicemail, outgoing gets network unavailable).
It has been back to HTC twice and they replaced various bits, they also gave him a new phone, they have also replaced the sim card.
During the 2 months this has been going on he has been using a nokia loan phone on and off and it works without any issues as did the previous nokia he had. So this really does seem to be down to the phone.
Virgin Australia (the carrier) has offered him $400 credit to buy a new phone with. Even though the cheapest grey imports on ebay are going for $600. They will not let him out of the contract.
HTC don't seem to think its really a problem, it took their rep 3 weeks to replace the phone.
I have recorded a few calls from my phone to his.
Attached is a copy of the call in audacity, you can clearly see where it dies, also a copy of the audio, its trimmed down to a short time around the call, but its a wav so its ~3.1mb.
It feels to me like some kind of incompatibility between the phone and the network, but between the buck passing and the incompetence of the call centers it seems like nothing is going to come of from on high.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to resolve this?
Sounds like others have had similar issues:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/77618-htc-incredible-sound-quality.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038256
Does the same happen when you are both in different locations?
Personally i'd be tempted to see if it's the same using a custom ROM, but you may not want to do that if there's a chance you'll be returning the phone anyway.
Thanks for the link but it doesn't seem quite like those.
The call quality is pretty good until it glitches then becomes totally horrible with echo and noise.
It really sounds like a bug in something to do with the echo canceler/radio or something else mucking with the audio stream.
I'd be keen on an alternate firmware but that will void the warranty and virgin would like nothing more.

I bet You could keep bouncing it back to HTC, perhaps insist on a replacement unit this time? If your patience is wearing thin it might just be easier to trade up though.
Actually it looks like this is the 2nd phone he has had
The imei number has changed twice.
So it really feels like a problem between the phone and the network.
I wonder if its because he is often on edge there. I don't get edge anywhere else I go.
edit/update:
11.05 version or less, you get popping 100% of the time using the method I posted.
If you are lucky to have an 11.08, we finally got one in the office that DOES NOT POP. IIRC this arrived wed or thurs as a replacement.
Please verify the version under your battery and report! I have no more interest in this as VZW was kind enough to switch me to a different model phone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, it's back and a friend and myself can recreate it ALMOST every time. We will test more in the morning but here some briefing... this is a factory load, with the latest OTA (hope I got the version correct!).... ie a brand new phone in the last week with the OTA applied.
Start a call, any call. Inbound or outbound.
Switch on speakerphone.
Let the screen blank out and wait at least 30 seconds.
Tap the power button to get the screen back.
HIGH PITCHED POP
Do it again.
HIGH PITCHED POP
Sometimes you can get it without doing anything, or sometimes if you hit the volume keys, it will happen.
-------
It's not isolated to inbound or outbound, or speakerphone. We have been having these issues since day one, and it used to be.... say 20% of the calls. I know that a LOT of others keep mentioning this issue here, especially in the rom sections, so maybe people thought it was rom/modem related.
We just figured this out when he called me, and were able to reproduce it on every call/callback. It even happened when I called 611 to ask what to do. They said to go to a corp store.
Problem: The other party can not hear the popping, but it's uber annoying. I'm typically on conference calls, speaker or not-speaker, and have to hit mute all the damn time, so this might be why I experience it... going out of a "sleep mode" more often than a lot of other users.
-----
Let me know if you have any issues like this. We are going to the local store tomorrow to show them. Not hopeful that they can actually do anything, but I'll report back!
Well I started getting the mad loud static last night, nearly making my ears bleed. Thought things were good being on the EP4D modems.
I'm rooted, but I am on the stock EP4D modems.
I was rooted then unrooted and took ota update and since day one i've had that crazy dumb popping sound but only when receiving calls..when i make calls its good and when i have a bluetooth headset its good when receiving...i dont know what it is but i want to find out because if i have to i will make vzw give me another phone

I already got a replacement and it's still happening. Next tier of VZW support wants to replace my phone again, and I'm skeptical that another replacement will "fix" the problem.
Again, we will be doing more testing later today, and will try to go into a VZW corp store to show them in person.
edit: it's also not just the popping, but sometimes the call will change and the other end is like they are talking.... best way to describe it.... through an overmodulated CB radio with their mouth too close to the mic. It becomes very hard to understand them, almost impossible since it's all garbled, and you have hang up and start the call over.
we can recreate it every single time now. Will have to run to the store to see what they say.
This is just one test:
call the phone from another line
Answer normally
wait a few seconds, suggest 30
Turn on speaker phone
Hit power to blank your screen, or wait for timeout.
wait a few more seconds, suggest 30 (recreated with about 5 seconds).
Hit power or volume keys.
Enjoy popping.
repeat, and enjoy. Might get the garbling or random pops without hitting any keys. Those are bonus features. UGH!!!
It's really awesome that you figured out the steps to reproduce. Let us know Verizon tries to fix it.
I'm guessing they either replace all phones with a diff model (very unlikely) or have to issue a follow-up patch for the modems.
Mine happens not only on speakerphone but also bluetooth, wired hands free and normal calls. It's not related to inbound or outbound. Through trouble shooting my issue it doesn't necessarily relate to turning on speakerphone. I would posit it's more related to the proximity sensor and/or screen activating. I've also noticed it occurring directly after adjusting the volume of a call without removing the phone from my ear (no proximity sensor/screen activation).
I haven't had time to go to a verizon store yet to get the phone replaced but it's definitely an issue that cannot be fixed by one of their reps in the store or over the phone.

That is promising that you tried my test set outlined above a few times. Every local device, even the VZW display device charge had the problem today.
Tier 2 tech tried with a test droid and his droid and couldn't get it to happen with the test method I've outlined. Again, every local device (probably 6 now) has had the problem.
Got another one on the way, let's hope this is the ONE +1 for VZW going out of their way, too!
Mine does it too now.

3rd one. First call.... pop pop pop!
Ok, so I'm getting a different phone delivered tomorrow, hope it doesn't have problems.
I've handled probably a dozen of these charges, same issue... was waiting for the software update since july or so. update came out, and still happening, UGH.
There are apparently 2 different SKU's for this phone!
My brand new one (bought about July 2011 at the same time as a friend) and first replacement was:
SCHI510RAV
Latest replacement is:
SCHI510ZDU
Latest had a lower imei, and an older date stamp.
I wonder if there is any correlation to reported issues (like in the rom sections) and the popping results. You can view under the battery.
VZW can't tell me why it's different.
VZW wanted to get Samsung on the phone, I called BS.
So I just called Samsung and they are clueless on the different sku's and the reproducible issue.
I have friends at work that need a resolution now! Again, I'm moving to another ship thanks to VZW, but still got stragglers out there in my building.
Honestly...other than *****ing in numbers...I'm not sure what else to do.

I have a CLN phone on the way as well. Popping is crazy loud. This will be my 3rd charge. If it does it again, I will push for another phone. Planning on getting the Nexus anyway. Wife needs a good phone not a popping a screeching one.
So, for the last week I have not been able to reproduce the issue. Going so far a trying to force it to happen with the usual steps. It's never been sporadic before and I didn't receive any updates nor did I do anything to try and fix the issue.
Anyone else have a similar experience this week?

My 2nd CLN replacement (3rd Charge overall) finally didnt have this problem. Unfortunately youll just have to keep getting replacements till you get lucky.
Fortunately with INFINITY 12/11 TSM, this phone is running better than EVER and with my extended battery in my backpack for daytrips this phone is finally great on all fronts.
I considered going to the nexus but since the nexus has the same size battery, same or bigger screen, and same radio hardware (close enough), i doubt it will have better battery and the Charge's physical buttons and screen are wins in my Eye over the nexus.. all we need is CM9 and the Charge will really be a great phone.
Yeah, I lied before. Just had a phone call with static. Well, now that I have time to get a replacement, looks like I'm moving on to the next one with fingers crossed.
