speaker not working properly anymore - Touch Pro, Fuze General

The speaker on my fuze doesn't really work unless I sometimes tap it lightly, and even then it crackles. it started happening suddenly a few days ago. its really annoying because I can't hear incoming calls anymore, and the speakerphone feature doesn't work either. I'm using NATF's 3.4 ROM, and have been since it came out, but this only started suddenly. I've noticed a small "popping" noise ever time I get an incoming text/call/ or some type of incoming signal.
I think its obvious that this is a hardware problem. If I remember correctly, I think HTC devices come with a 1 year manufactuer's warrenty. Maybe I can make use of it?
Would I also have to unflash the phone and bring it to factory settings?

bump? can someone please give me some advice?

same problem...

speaker
Same problem, speaker stops working then works.

same problem, Mine finally went out all together, and I can only hear it when my ear is RIGHT NEXT TO THE SPEAKER....its very low...I need to go ahead and try to get a warranty replacement.

I suggest contacting ATT ASAP. even if you didn't purchase a replacement plan, HTC provides a warrenty for a certain amount of days. As long as your phone isn't otherwise damaged you can send it back
I did it, and got a newphone in about 4 days (though you can get expedited shipping for $12)

Sound disappeared on MDA Compact II (Charmer). Help!

The sound from the speaker of the Charmer has suddenly completely disappeared while it was in use.
I can still use the earpiece during conversations, but nothing at all comes out of the rear speaker. I tried openning it and seeing if the problem was something like just a loose connection or something like it but even after openning, couldn't make head or tail of anything. All connections seemed fine.
Need help desperately.
I had a problem with the speaker too. I tried opening the unit myself (careful on the warranty sticker) but not manage to see any loose connections.
At the end, I sent it back to HTC Europe for repair (thankfully it is in warranty), after two rounds, they've got it repaired.
It may be a Charmer thing, or a HTC thing.
Anyway, how does it sound just before the speaker went dead? Mine started off with some static noise and then it went dead completly during a phone conversation, and I thought the line has been dropped.

Just leave a message on their answering machine and they will call you back the next day (call again if they didn't call you back the next day). All they need is your IMEI number to check on your warranty. They will send you an email with instructions on how to send it to them for repair.
Thanks for the quick reply and the contact information.
However, being as stupid as I am, that warranty sticker is no longer in one piece. So don't think that will work.
But also, yours stopped working while in call; mine in-call volume on the earpiece is still working, just the back speaker is not. So, no ringtones, sounds from games, tomtom, ..... etc.
Any ideas on what exactly is wrong? Something to do with connections... speaker.... or just audio processing circuits? If it's the latter, then I'm definitely screwed.
Yes, mine is the same problem with yours. I'm on speaker phone mode when it went dead. I can still use all function except the back speaker. Yes, same problem. As according to their record, they first replaced the speaker. But after I've got it, it went seriously wrong (very hot) when I use the speaker. So, I sent it back again and they said they replaced the main board. Probably the main board burned the speaker. Not sure. Doesn't sound like a loose connection.
Anyway, try calling them and ask what will they do it the warranty label is 'broken'. They'll probably charge you for that. Just bs them that you bought it second hand and know nothing about it.
That's a good idea. I'm gonna try and call them and see what happens. Will update here.
Thanks a lot for your good help Hanmin.

Faulty Polaris - returned

OK, am I the first person in Uk to return my with a fault !!??
The earpiece has failed, not even a squawk comes out from it. The head set and speaker phone still works though.
Devicewire.com wouldn't take it back even though its still in the DOA time-scale. Well at least that was the story until I got HTC on the case. I then decided to send it back to HTC anyway on the basis that they'll probably have more stock.
This isn't a moan the phone is superb, I just figured that it could be the start of a 'known faults' thread.
The SD slot cover won't close on mine. Apparantly, HTC devices are prone to this fault. However, everything else is working perfectly so I actually chose not to send it back to HTC - didn't want to take the risk of waiting weeks and weeks for another...

Mine is dead also.
Besides from the phone speaker, all other components work OK. Can only make phone calls using the speaker on the back or via a (BT) headset. I am afraid mine has to go back to HTC also.

Mine earpiece had also failed and I returned it back to Devicewire for replacement.
After using my TC for a long voice call or with bluetooth or WiFi or GPS, the top part of the set becomes warm and when you run your finger across the START menu bar, an "unglueing" sound is heard.
This happens only when the TC set is warm - apparently the top part of the screen becomes unstuck or the glue was not applied correctly.
Had to demonstrate to HTC several times before they decided that it was a faulty set.

Apparently this happens to some sets only. I would recommend that you insist for a replacement set or at least a replacement screen.
I was so irritated by that noise that I was even prepared to pay for a replacement screen myself if HTC insisted that it was not a problem.
Fortunately, I managed to get a replacement set as I was within my 14 day 1-1 exchange policy.
ive had problems with wifi, bluetooth and camera. ive also returned my unit to HTC
I had problems with Bluetooth, Wifi, text messages... Also returned for repair. Hope they send me an iphone back instead...
I sent mine back. I had crappy bluetooth and bad reception, it would drop calls in areas with full signal. Would drop the calls even more when using bluetooth headset.
Mine is back to HTC for repairs (speaker problem).
Wonder how long it will take them to repair it.
Robin
I also have a faulty unit bought in the UK. I bought it in London, near the British Museum.
My FM tuner and my bluetooth are totally broken. The volume button is too hard to slide.
my first o2 set had a wonky screen, not square in device. my 2nd one the screen was positioned over to the left plus some oily/lcd residue on the middle of both screens, like liquid crystal when you push the display, except this was visible without pressure. plus my first one the jog dial wasnt central and leaned over,, awaiting my third handset, tiresome, epsecially when you look at the price of these things! if id bought one outright, id get my money back i think. shame though, as is a great piece of hardware, just let down by assembly :'(
(oh and video drivers)
BT, Earphone and Radio - Gee!!!
Once upon a time I was about to enter an airplane and then selected Flight Mode.
After that, no more Radio, Bluetooth, neither Earphone.
USB earphones and speakerphone are okay.
Some apps do not register accordingly (bug in using the FlashToPermMem function).
Sometimes the phone simply shuts down.
Darn! I have to return it but I am in Brazil :-(

My dutch Touch Cruise also lost it's phone speaker today. Not a blip comes out of it. When using the handsfree speaker, I can still make my calls. But I'm not that into calling people where everybody can listen into the conversation..
Back to HTC it is....
I'm returning my new Polaris because I get little to no signal reception although I am in an area where signal strength is not an issue
HTC Europe told me to send it to the German service center as a DOA and I will get a replacement. I was told to send it everything (incl. packaging).
The German service center has said they don't do DOA swaps, only repairs. And I should send in only the Polaris (even without battery / battery compartment cover) ...
Now HTC is escalating this and they are supposed to get back with my via email with exact instructions
But, in all fairness, I have to say that HTC Europe (based on the accent I guess they are in England ??) has been very responsive. Not that the problem has been solved yet, but I always find it positive when a company calls back as promised
But of course, even better would be to get a product that works
Cheers,
Andreas
phone speaker has died
After three months, the speaker of my touch cruise stopped working. Handsfree still works. I did send an email to my provider and am curious how to tackle this problem.
Did anybody solve this already?

Captivate microphone issues

Hello all:
I am on my first replacement phone, and am experiencing a recurring problem that I also had on my original phone. At times during the call, the person on the other end will not be able to hear me (a la 'mute'), but I can hear them. I have confirmed that the mute function is not activated (even turned it on then off), but no luck. My initial impression was just a faulty microphone/hardware, but given that my second phone is also experiencing then same problem, I wonder if it is something that I am doing. I can assure you that I am not in any way blocking the microphone hole at the bottom of the phone (experimented with that to see if it was the cause). I can also rule out network issues due to moving between cells - I have experienced this problem driving and sitting still at my desk.
This problem, more than the GPS issue, will be the deal breaker for me - this is a business phone and I spend a substantial amount of time every day on work related calls.
Thanks in advance.
Thomas
I have the same issue. My coworker had the same issue with his the replacement under warranty.
If I use the headset it works fine. If I mute the phone and un-mute it it starts working.
Something is fishy with the microphone of this model ...
Okay, now this is getting ridiculous. Either I have really bad luck, or I am doing something wrong. On my second replacement phone, and like the last two, I have problems with the microphone cutting out during the middle of calls. Am I completely alone, or am I just lucky in getting phones with bad mics?
I keep the phone in my pocket with a body glove case. The mic is not plugged up, and it seems random. Could there be a software issue (ie a piece of software interfering and taking over the soundstream from the mic)? Even though the person on the far end cannot hear me, I can hear them.
Thanks
T
@ banesong: I'm having similar issues. I've had my phone for a little more than 24 hours. last night i couldn't hear anything coming from my mic and obviously could not communicate from my end. taking the battery out and back in fixed it for me. but i look at this as only a temporary solution. hopefully this isn't a hardware issue
I am having the same issue. I've had my Captivate since the end of July and it is running stock 2.1 that came with it and unrooted. I can't remember when the issue first started. But it has been doing it a lot more lately. It seems to happen around 8 or 9 minutes after I am on the phone call. At first I would hang up and just call back. Then I discovered that the mic would start working again if I just turned the speakerphone on and then off again.
It is really starting to get annoying now. I am thinking about getting a warranty replacement. The only reason why I didn't get a warranty replacement sooner is because I don't feel like having to remember and reinstall all the apps that I have on my phone now.
Having the same issue here and I have an idea about the problem.
If you remove the lid on the back that covers the battery the microphone is disabled and no warning appears on the screen. This is the same behaviour we are all experiencing.
There are two round blank spots on the inside of the cover matching two contacts on the phone. My idea is that the 'lid open' detection checks if the lid connects these two contacts.
My microphone usually starts working when I squeeze the phone.
Not sure about a workaround yet but connecting the two connectors directly inside the phone should solve it permanently (but voids the warranty).
Hope that helps.
T
Sorry, please ignore my previous message. I couldn't reproduce it yesterday so it must have been coincidence.
However, I have the same microphone problem and would like to know if there is a fix for it.
Cheers
T
Possible fix
I know this is an old thread but I have one of these old phones and was having this problem. After fiddling with the settings a bit I found a setting under Call Settings->Voice Call->Noise suppression. I unchecked the box and the mic seems to be working - for now.

[Q] Voice calls - Other party can't hear, reboot required

I've searched and it doesn't seem that many others are having this problem. My wife also has a Droid Charge and has never had this happen.
Basically, mid-call (usually 5-10 minutes, 1-2x a day), the other party will stop hearing me. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. If I hang up and call back, the problem is still there. Cycling airplane mode doesn't help... I actually have to reboot the phone. It's gotten to the point where I tell people if it happens, I'll call them back (since it takes a while to reboot).
This is with the stock ROM, as well as Humble 1.5.
Usually it's just silence on their end, but once in a while, the problem manifests as a screechy, random fax-type noise. Same thing... I can hang up and call voicemail and have it sound like that. I always have to reboot the phone.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, were they able to fix it w/o getting a replacement phone?
Thanks.
I have the exact same situation. Wife and I both have DCs. I got mine first. About the second day I had it, the screetching noise happened. It was so loud it almost blew my ear out. Hanging up and redialing did not help. I had to reboot the phone. I exchanged for a new phone for that and other reasons. The new replacement on does the same thing once in a while and the wife says there is sometimes a clicking noise then she can't hear me at all but I can hear her fine. She has had the screetching noice once.

Weird. I've only had the screeching noise one time. Usually, it's like my end is on mute.
I thought it might be the switch to 4g recently, but remembered it happened before then, too. Plus, it doesn't happen on my wife's phone at all.
I guess I'll have to get a replacement. Is there any way to ensure I get a new phone and not a refurb if I do a warranty replacement?

You are going to get a refurb unless you are within 14 days. You can argue and they might give you a new one if you threaten to port out but other then that you will not get a new phone.

Damn. I'm a bit over 30 days. That really sucks, as I seriously doubt they'll be able to reproduce the problem with my phone, but will take it back and "refurb" it to the next unsuspecting owner.

[Q] Speaker and Microphone don't work anymore. Suggestions?

So while I was impaired, I managed to drop my skyrocket in a toilet about a month ago. Fished it out, dried it off for a couple days, thought it was fine when the radios started working again. First time I actually used if for a call after that the speaker seemed scratchy, so I just started using my work cell for voice calls because I didn't have the time to deal with it.
I finally looked at it again today, and from what I can tell neither the speaker nor the microphone work anymore, and I can't use headphones with it either. Bluetooth does work though, so if I really need to make a call on it, I can go out to my car and call from there... /o\
Edit: I just tested with the youtube and voice recorder apps, and they work fine. So it's something wrong with the phone app? I'm now really confused, since I was leaning toward it being a hardware issue, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I called AT&T technical support and said I "dropped" it. They said that dropping voids the warranty anyway, and suggested a factory reset. Still no dice, so now I'm looking to the internet. Any suggestions?
its no doubt because you dropped it into water. If it powers on fine try taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning. Maybe corrosion somewhere. IDK, but thats what I would do
If this just happened I would have suggested using the rice trick, but seeing as how it was so long ago, im not really sure.
