The major selling point of the s2 is the fact that it's the only hardware accelerated android phone. Throw cm7 or miui on there and its just another mediocre android device that's completely unimpressive. Unless either miui or cm plan on writing brand new drivers and Samsung intends to offer some sort of licensing deal then there's no real plus side to it.
Apple is pretty obnoxious. Their patents are ridiculously general

Not trying, actually doing. This time it is in the Netherlands where it is illegal for Samsung to sell the Galaxy S, Galaxy S 2.

No it's not. The injunction would take effect sometime in October, but by then Samsung will have their phones updated, so it's moot.
@z33dev33l: There is more to a phone than which chip is responsible for scrolling.

its still just another laggy android phone without samsungs drivers.
Yeah, no matter how many people tell you they don't see any problems, all Androids are so laggy you measure scrolling in seconds per frame instead of frames per second. Sure.
Get a new shtick please, this one is getting boring.

nonsensical post first of all, second of all android did seem smooth til I got something smoother. Now every time I try to use an android device, gs2 included, I notice these little catches that I wouldn't have even seen before but now make the phone feel like I paid 500 dollars for feel cheap.
Of course it's nonsensical. But it's what you're saying all the time! So the nonsense is not on my part, but on yours. You *are* constantly talking as if Android is so slow, and as if all that matters on a phone is which chip does the scrolling. But of course when you're saying it, you don't see the nonsense in it.

I was talking about your "seconds per frame" comment, none of what you said there made any sort of sense. Android is slow which is one of many faults in it, I like a phone that just works, nothing I have to crack flash roms to, nothing I have to download 40 apps to before it has basic functions, and certainly nothing that lags relentlessly and force closes on me. I just wanted a device that works how a smartphone should without spending days or weeks making it do so before the phone became moderately useful.
just to make sure you guys don't forget, considering my last reminder was on page 1:

iPhones are horrendous aside from the app market, the UI is more cluttered than android though admittedly more uniform, and the hardware offers no choices. I am a long time winmo user and for a year and a half used android, I still have 14 android phones that dont get used. I'm just always on the lookout for the best. I'm a fanboy of no OS, whatever is best is what I use.

Exactly,
BTW Samsung did enter into a agreement with Cyanogen group, my guess is it was preemptive strategy.
People who look at an Android phone as laggy have not really taken advantage of ALL the great work by the Devs here @ XDA, or Rootzwiki or elsewhere. My phone is screaming fast great battery life....etc.
My guess is Samsung along with HTC in particular are integrating the advancements made by US in the android community, because the fact that the op system is open all advancements can be blended in the best and fastest way. That is the beauty of the Android op system.
What Android is lacking is a singular voice......... Iphone is one phone one supplier. Android is many. So Iphone can effect great marketing assuring the customer that paying more for less is awesome and makes them feel good. But the fact is the Iphone is less for more. Android needs to get this message out in a single voice from all suppliers.

so they're combining the efforts of the xda community, google, and all of the OEMs to make an OS work almost as well as wp7 and (sadly) IOS do? Of course people will still have full system access to slow it down.
z33 i perfectly understand the point you wanna make here. I know you're not a simple troll, just a quite informed and very very picky user (like i am after all). Tbh i wasn't really likely to pick another android phone in the latest months, because i was (and i actually still am) disappointed about how the aosp is managed by google. After a year of usage i came to the conclusion that android os has many, MANY flaws. I started considering other devices, like wp7 phones, the iphone and even the new bold 9900, but after a lot of reflections i came to a quite simple conclusion: sure android isn't perfect, but jumping ship to any other os would have still felt like a downgrade to me, being used to what android offers to users: it simply felt like not having a real choice. Basically i (re)discovered that messing up my phone and being able to plug it to every pc or mac as a mere mass storage is actually something i like and need. So a couple weeks ago i looked around, checked which one was the most up to date and powerful android phone and picked up my sgs2, simple as that. Now i'm running a simple aosp rom, and i can say i'm not bothered that much about not having samsung's hw accelerated ui (which is a bit of a lie actually: if you load the tw launcher with a few widgets it actually lags): i use opera mobile for browsing, which is totally fast and smooth (buttery smooth), and launcher pro plus as a launcher, which is virtually lag free on this device, regardless how badly you load it with widgets.
It's true, you can see it from what i just said, android is all about workarounds to avoid flaws and bugs, but honestly i prefer *****ing a bit more with my phone to get it running as i like rather than getting any wp7 or ios device that takes no effort to "customize", but at the end of the day is like a wife telling you what you can and can't do
That's the way i see it at least...

And the Tab isn't included
I expect an update from Google reasonably quickly which will prevent Apple trying the same trick with other companies.
In other news, Nokia have won against Apple, meaning they'll earn royalties from Apple.

Just returned from Xmas shopping and thought I was going to get some tablets for family members but found them to be frustratingly slow when compared to the iPad--which is what people are going to do, even though they shouldn't, they're going to. Google did announced that Android <2.2 is simply not ready for tablets and I couldn't agree more.
I have an iPad at home and the cheapest iPad competes successfully with the best tablets Android has, the Dell Streak and Samsung tab. Those tablets are <$600, so's the iPad. Unless there's a specific reason why you'd rather use an Android tablet when the screen is smaller and the whole tablet is overall slower, the choice is easily iPad.
I heard a shopper try to use one and comment how slow Android is. I showed him my Evo to tell him that Android's still in progress, it'll get faster. Unless you don't mind paying for $300 or less for frustration, (inexpensive) Android tablets are just not ready. I hear Honeycomb will have a tabler-optimized system.
** mind you, I'm a Phandroid so...
Couldn't agree more. The galaxy tab is an embarrassment. I tried using one in a store the other day and got 3 force closes in ten minutes, plus a jerky UI and ****house resolution.
I liked the Tab a lot, thought it was really great. Didn't have any issues with it when I played it with it. But I agree to an extent. Problem is, most Android tablets are made poorly. Archos is about the only one that has made decent tablets aside from Dell and Samsung. It could be better though, I'll say that. Right now Android is suited for mobile phones. For a good reason, it's a phone OS.
More reason to look forward to honeycomb. The flagship Google tablet should set the standard for android tablets.

Yes! And they're going to kick butt. Apple optimized the iPhone's OS for three years before they brought out the iPad. Android is only about three years old, isn't it? I just hope that the crappy tablets out there now haven't damaged Android's rep.
Or Google should've just thrown ChromeOS on tablets. Chrome is basically what I use on my Ubuntu powered netbook. I rarely see the desktop anymore.
I have had a galaxy tab for about 27 days..I also have an ipad that i've had for awhile....I like the tab but it's going back tomarrow...Had 3 and all 3 had dead pixels..I think the screen is better than ipad and using the apps and playing with OS is peppy like my Vibrant but start browsing and it becomes sluggish...Some sites are much worst than others...The stock browser is by far the slowest thing ever..dolphin hd is better but still sluggish..I tried all browsers and disabling flash/plugins and different settings ...No matter what i try browsing is not smooth like my ipad...I hoped a fix came out or a ROM that would fix the laggy browsing but nothing yet....I really like the tab because of A: Android OS vs the boring basic ios4 and B: The screen is better than my ipad...While the ipad screen is very nice the tab is better and once samoled starts coming on them ohhh my!
Google had plenty of time to make the OS smooth, 2.3 is a big fail. I don't know what google has given to people but everyone believes that android will be the next big thing. Seems like we will never reach the promised land.
People had so much expectations about gingerbread, new UI, gpu accelerated graphics, the smoothness, new integration with social networking... Instead you get a 2.3 with a new keyboard and few little things people don't care.
After 2 yrs and some the OS still is not smooth, it lacks in visual appearance, the apps are crap. I don't know how much longer i'll stay with this OS. Everytime i get a new phone is always read the stickies, flash new roms rinse and repeat. I am so tired of this, i don't know how long is going to stay like this but is like google doesn't give two ****s about it.
I bought an ipad this past weekend, jailbroke it, and started installing apps and end of story. I have games that i have fun playing with and apps that doesn't look like crap. If iphone had 3g in tmobile i'd consider getting an iphone.

It seems like you're the type that just wants their computer to work..[period]. This is not a criticism, you must just not be interested in hacking and modding your phone and why should you have to? There are so many choices out there, you don't have to use an Android phone--unless you were forced into using one.
Some of the apps are crap and some are are not but the choice is yours. The good apps filter to the top and bad ones never surface. I only choose apps that are four stars or better so my apps aren't crap--not to me at least. Don't you think that sort of freedom is nice? I do!
I, for one am glad that Google doesn't give two-****s about it ( I think they do ), it's an open source project and what you do with "your" phone is up to "you". We've never had this sort of freedom and I'm grateful we finally have it. But you don't have to try new ROMs or read any stickies if you don't enjoy it. I know Android phone users who have absolutely no plans to ever root their phone because they're happy with the way the carrier set it up for them--great!
I came from the Blackberry world and the only thing I could do with that was change the wallpaper and the size of the fonts *yawn*. RIM did everything for me and I had no clue what they were doing. Also, I've had Apple products, they magically patch things for me--what's going on? I'd like to know... Apple says, "no you don't--just use it, m'kay?" Microsoft does the same... No... Oh? I didn't know that about WinMO. I think that to a point you can hack and mod anything you want. I've seen OS 7 running on an iPhone and thought that was impressive but have no idea if that's difficult or not. But that's not Apple's corporate philosophy where as AOSP, by definition will lends itself to extensive modification and is almost encouraged--man, I've dreamed of this.

The UI has different elements from previous versions, but this isn't the first time this happened. This happens with other platforms all the time. Windows Phone 7 for not having Copy and paste off the bat, or any decent homebrew support. Apple with the lack of multitasking, or Blackberry with something actually new and specs that can rival current Android phones!

It's not just google mind you, Google can only do so much. If you're gonna blame Google, then you have to blame Qualcomm, Samsung, TI, HTC, etc etc for making the phone and some of the drivers. And I don't know about you, but I didn't flash a new rom every day now. I just get a rom that's best for me, and if it needs updated, I update it. Same thing with stock roms. If Google didn't give 2 ****s about it, then why is Google still supporting Android as much as they are? I like the UI of Android a lot. Easy to customize and change, where as for the longest time in Ios and mostly still now, black background? Windows Phone 7, black background or a different color? For the apps, it's open source. That's what the reviews in the Marketplace are for. I've have good experiences with the apps.

Ios is also completely locked down in terms of development. Iphone 3g is also nothing compared to current Android phones now. An Arm11 v6 cpu, versus say an Arm Cortex a8? About 400-440mhz underclocked from 600mhz or so, versus even the Droid only being clocked at 550mhz, but having a huge advantage of better instruction sets and Adreno gpu? You obviously haven't done much homework either, Tmobile will support Iphone on their network, and there's even unlock codes in Cydia available. All you need to do, setup a plan with Tmobile, and get a Tmobile Sim card for that plan. It might now have the 3g network enabled, but there's your Iphone for you.
I'm not bad mouthing Apple, Iphone, Windows, Microsoft, WP7, or anything like that. But Apple has complete control over the Iphone and Ios(There isn't even an AT&T logo on the Iphone), WP7 is still young so we'll see how it turns out, and Android is still growing.
I would agree that the iPad is much more advanced. But the Galaxy Tab is pretty decent and I actually love the color nook. It is great for what it does...
Once released, Honeycomb should have a positve major impact on new futere Tablets.

I completely disagree. You must not have done your homework well. Right now the best tablets are the tegra tablets. They own the ipad in every way possible and are receiving alot of development. As far as I know there are 4 out now: Toshiba Folio 100, Viewsonic G Tablet, Advent Vega, and the Elocity 7". I'm on the Viewsonic G Tablet, so far the rims developed by our Dev team are 1337! They can play flash, have full market, and are hella fast!
I am genuinely pissed after they postponed the ICS event because I felt like that would be the infuses' time to get current with its OS. Maybe I'm venting my frustration a bit but 500K+ devices are turned on per day(at least for the next few months). I see that version pie chart and Froyo is still number 1 despite GB releasing roughly 10 months ago(not to mention a new version is weeks from releasing) . It's exactly why I come here.
I would also like to point out that the Fragmentation also causes what I like to call a popularity contest. Yes you have a crap ton of device options but guess what the carriers and manufacturer are making sure the cash cows are first in line. Do you think they have as many engineers/developers working with the ChaCha as they do on sgs2? Hell no
Why is Google shooting themselves in the foot in staying current? Why on earth haven't they sat down with the phone manufacturers and hammered out some sort of standard to speed up adoption of new OS?
Android has a wide array of devices and that makes them unique and better than the competition by offering choice.
I understand that the burden of keeping up to speed primarily falls to the manufacturer/carriers which blows for us. The maker/google contract states the carrier only has update the device for 18 months. The definition and or frequency of an update is obscure at best.
I don't even want to guess how much money is being wasted on development overlapping costs because of the hodgepodge of devices. I tried to find out exactly how many hardware devices are currently supported. I found a list of everything but no summary I didn't feel like counting the but a good estimate is 350 + worldwide.
I understand the development life cycle as well as a hardware life-cycle. I fail to understand why integration of an update takes longer than one quarter to apply.
Google develops tests and releases system updates. The manufacturers takes that update and tests it with their bull**** on top (IE touch wiz and sense) then they test on devices.
Carriers finally now test the update, certify it, and push to users(never pushed at one time because they would never risk any downtime or damage to their network).
Wtf google step your game up and reduce the impact of Fragmentation because its only going to get worse and worse.
I'm the kind of device user that makes a well informed decision and won't get a new device until it breaks or I lose it(wow thinking about it I really am horrible with phones).
I have had this phone since it came out in April and I love it (I left it in a cab during the first 2 weeks I had it but was able to get my replacement soon after). Basically I'm a day one Adopter I had my original rooted and rom'd. It drastically improved the general usability of the phone. I decided to wait to mod the phone until I got the official gb to see what it could bring to the table. I really like the one click update with no issues but my hand has been forced. My device has been becoming noticeably slower and i find myself pulling the battery at least once every 2 days. To use it as a phone like it was intended I need to port to a mod. The
Thank you developers for implementing what the billion dollar corporations could not in literally 1/10 of the time.
Sorry if I ranted I'm pissed and there's no way I'm going down to wallstreet lol I'm lazy.
Jason
Note: I also read that it could reach nearly 1 million devices a day by the end of Oct/Nov.

Trust me I understand your frustration! According to google ICS was supposed to be that game changing release but honestly marketing is what is stopping companies from unifying. A majority of people who get an Android device don't know what the hell to do with it, how it works, or in the most part don't care (or at least don't seem to understand the difference between froyo and GB) they just want a functioning
phone. Then comes ios, that's why it's so popular.

I do venture to say that android developers are hurting as well with having to unnecessarily cater to multiple versions of the same OS. I was under the impression that ICS was that as well and will be a step in that direction. Once again how long will that take to push out to consumers? Are we supposed to wait until then? Google just needs to grow some balls and steer the proverbial green bull by the horns before the amount of devices becomes the reason we dont run with the bulls anymore.

Quite frankly your frustration (and mine) is backed by the dev community; to atleast some extent. Although, I still believe google saw the bright green money tree right above their noses and since then, can not let go of the smell! In other words, there wont' be a solution in the near future.

Any and all of these things can and will give you instability. I had a cm7 theme that kept crashing the system on my backflip.

There comes devs who may port it (hopefully). Ics is supposed to get rid of the fragmentation, and maybegoogle has something up there sleeve to combine all phones and most get ics who knows. Google and Sammy have just hired cynagen (sorry bad speling) and other major devs. They may just help figure out this problem, where they are actually smart and put this into consideration.

Completely agreed. Phone's that will never officially have things like Sense 3.5 have it, and the same with firmwares. I do love my Samsung though.

Problem is that every phone has vendor-proprietary bits to handle specific hardware support that aren't portable. The Apache license of the Android userland stack makes this possible. Also the ability to have proprietary modules loaded by the kernel doesn't help - for example the FSR and RFS drivers in the Infuse. The same reason you'll likely never see ICS for the Infuse is the same reason you didn't see CM7 until Rogers Gingerbread dropped. (It existed, but it was in a barely usable state until the vendor-proprietary stuff from Rogers GB could get pulled in.)
The good news is that I think Google is forcing vendors to "play nicer" as far as the low-level vendor-proprietary code in order to make AOSP bringups easier. They enforced a LOT of standardization with Honeycomb - the question is can they keep that going with ICS without witholding source like with HC? I think that by exercising tighter control over Google Apps licensing they can.
The Galaxy S II is a hint of things to come - while it still has vendor-proprietary libraries in the userland stack, it has zero closed-source components in the kernel, unlike previous Samsungs.
Motivation and $.
my opinion only...but, phone carriers have no motivation* to update the o.s. of phones already sold.
Just a few random thoughts...
1. Limited $ to be made from you (the customer waiting for an upgrade)
....a. sale of the device is already made.
....b. buyer is already locked into a long-term contract.
2. they are a phone company not a software company...thus any software developers they might have are probably focused on future sales and testing.
3. they don't make money releasing updates to already sold phones.
4. support staff would have to be pretty good size.
I wonder if the phone providers keep software upgrade staff or do they contract that out??? say to the phone manufacture (i.e. samsung, htc)? I have no idea.
(I am assuming it's the phone carriers who are the primary cause of delays in releasing software updates...not necessarily the
* what's more important to them? Future repeat customers due to good service OR simply getting them locked into longterm service contracts? Obviously point 2.
I wish fragmentation was decreased to that of the IBM compatibe market. (Am I the only one that still calls them that?)

Interesting point I would have to say they contract the work out to upgrade versions. If they haven't already I wouldn't be surprised to see full teams being hired as android becomes more permanent.

Android users unite, demand upgrades
The state of Android software support is ridiculous, and some Android users have their heads in the sand and make excuses for the problem.
As a group we should demand software updates. 6 months ago Google and their partners in the open handset alliance pledged to address the issue of software updates and nothing has come of this. I still own a Droid Charge only officially running an Android version that came out in 2009.
What has Samsung done since releasing my Charge? Released the Stratosphere, as well as numerous other devices across other carriers.
If you think the average consumer does not care that their phone isn't running the latest software, then you may be correct. But, the average consumer sure as heck cares that his phone does not have the features of other competing companies. Also, stability is another issue, some phones are left running unstable software.
Do not ignore this problem. Android will lose the war if this continues. If this is being compared to the PC market, we are in 1989, Android could be any number of platforms that doesn't make it.
If you care about the platform, demand more of the platform.

Yeah this is true, I'd definitely have to agree. Don't get me wrong, I love Android, but there are some things I wish they would fix. Like the caller waiting feature, it should be updated to be more user friendly. Why should you have to hang up and wait for the automatic call back? They need to rebuild that part of the ui where you can.
Very interesting article. Very true also. It is a sad and troubling issue unfortunately for us. Software support and updates seem to be getting worse and worse for us Android users.
Good thing i got my nexus handset...kind of helps as at least i know google will keep rolling out the updates for at least 18 to 24 months.
The problem is with the big phone manufactures...they skin android too deep and take too long to clear up their mess in order to update the builds. Also they just want us to buy new phones every few months it seems. I intend to see my nexus s contract through to the remaining 12 months for sure. Ice Cream Sandwich looks delicious by the way!

Yes a lot of android user know that, they just don't want to admit that sometime they visit android market and download an app and found out the app crashes and wouldn't not work on their device, and still they don't want to say it, because they always want android to win vs apple, rim and wp7, the funny thing is they are not even part of the company, and will manufacturers don't update their device but can release new devices with an updated android OS, so people with money on their hand sell their phone and buy new android device just to update, they want android to win but they do not realize that android is sucking the life out of their pocket.
ICS is too late for it, but I hope J(ellybean) functions more like a launcher and its theme. Just mass update the background OS for all phones (whether through OTA or through website), and let manufacturer/telcom update their skin independently, so that consumers don't have to wait for the (unreliable) promise from manufacturer/telcom.

Are we guaranteed by policy that the phones need to be updated? If anyone can check the sales agreement, is it mentioned anything about the future software update?
I have not checked, but I think there is no such obligation from manufacturer. So, in essence they are not breaking the law. We buy a phone on what it has presently, not speculating about future enhancements.
It would be great to have manufacturers give more attention to this update issue. But I doubt anyone could hold them accountable.
It's also obvious that if any of these get updated, it would be only the premier ones, not the budget models.

So do you have iOS5 installed on your iphone, iphone 3G?
Which app is exclusive to gingerbread?
I think you should go back to iphone. It looks like you've made up your mind.
As for updates, US carrier versions tend to be slower and no surprises there with all the bloatware and restrictions they have to build into the firmware
Also there are ton of posts on xda where users with 2.3.3/2.3.4 devices complain about not receiving 2.3.5 updates and same goes for 3.0/3.1 users not receiving 3.2 update without knowing what that new revision brings to the table
As corps begin to adopt smartphones, the first thing a CIO will ask, "What's the Product Life Cycle?"
3GS gets iOS5 but the Nexus One won't get ICS!? Lowe's just ordered 42,000 iPhones, I would have too. Pull your head out Google!!! It's not just the kids who want updates but the grown ups too!

but for sure I'll never get one
Very simple, it's clouse source
But, ios can run on htc g2 . lol . I thinks it's ilauncher and lock screen replace
If any other phone were to run iOS it would be the HD2... but anywho i doubt you would see an iOS port. Apple would be on it like angry birds to pigs. Always trying to defeat them but there just seems to be more out there
Even better, you should install android on an iPhone. To me that proves which is superior. Open source software will always be morally superior, at the very least

I think you should get an iPhone, but that's just a suggestion.
I can't believe I'm recommending this thread to anyone, but here goes...
The following thread is from a guy that wanted to get his Android phone looking and acting as much like an iPhone as possible. He calls it "an authentic taste", but it is not made by Apple - it's just skin. It's still Android underneath and that's not gonna change.
Anyway, have a look at the suggestions (throughout the thread - not just the 1st post) and see if it helps you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389470
Better yet, get MIUI. It has a very similar look and feel to iOS, but it has a lot more options and functionality. It's also a doddle to completely retheme with just a couple of clicks, so you can get a totally fresh interface as often as you like.

If only, some androids have great hardware but the software side is sad.
if you want ios get an iphone.
if you want android get an android phone.
if you like both install miui on your android device.
There is no way of installing ios on anything other than a device that was meant to run it in the first place.

LOL very interesting statement, but it's becoming reality
there's an insanely huge horde of people following MIUI for no good reason IMO (reminds you of Apple? anyone )
I apologize, I'm a phone gamer and android is none too fulfilling in that sense. That paired with ill-optimized software and I don't see the benefit. WP7 is lesser on gaming as well, but I'm a bit of an achievement whore.
Jesus, is this forum really only filled with uneducated, over-opinionated, and unhelpful people?
To answer the OP's question; yes and no. It won't be able to run natively, due to the fact that it's closed source. Though, that's never stopped people before. One could write an ARM-based iDevice emulator and it would theoretically boot.
The trials and tribulations of the emulator would be difficult, but here's what would have to be implemented (off the top of my head, of course):
1. CPU (shouldn't be extremely difficult because the host (phone) is ARM-based)
2. Sound
3. Memory (not the worst, especially because an iPhone only has 512 MB RAM)
4. Graphics/Display/Input (shrug)
5. Implement measures to counter device-checks when booting
6. Flash storage (easy)
7. Anything else that I can't think of atm.
So yes, it would be a huge undertaking, but theoretically, it could run in an emulated environment with bad-mild performance. Don't ever expect iOS-like butter, though. The overhead cost of Android is extremely large (my 1 gig RAM usually has 600 MB free to use) and the phones have near identical specs, which makes it difficult for perfect performance due to limited memory/cpu.
I hope this is better than "OMG HAHA I <3 ANDrOID SO MUCH! BOOo APPL AND TEH iPhonE SUX!!!"
EDIT: Also, it is technically possible to create an iOS compatibility layer (like wine), so you could just launch iOS apps. But that's something I know nothing about and would probably be very difficult. You would have to subvert the need for the kernel (it's open source, so who knows if that helps?) and then rewrite all of the frameworks that iOS uses to work on Android. It's a large undertaking, but it would be interesting, none-the-less.

Suffice to say that after being in the iOS environment for the past few years, my venture into Android with the TF700 has been lackluster at best. I've had the tablet for 24 hours and have been utterly disappointed with its performance. For being the premier android tablet on the market, it's no wonder people migrating from iOS are having such terrible experiences.
Firstly, I'd say that about 20% of the apps i've downloaded have crashed or stalled on me. These are all main stream apps, nothing from small developers, its from the googles, amazon, pandora, etc...
This tablet couldn't stream music, run the ftp client, and browse the web at the same time.... the tablet was sugglish and the music would stop playing at times.

The apps all look beautiful and well made, the ipad doesn't freeze, and it's overall a more intuitive system. I prefer the open source aspect of android, but wow, this tablet was a complete let down. My business partner's ipad 1 is still a better and smoother experience than this piece of junk.
My wife has both an iPad and an iPhone, they most certainly do crash. I have used both and the TF700T is not nearly as bad as you describe. It out performs the hell out of the iPad with proper maintenance. I am not sure why you have had such a bad experience, but the device is far from a piece of junk. As for app crashes, again your experience differs greatly. I rarely have crashes at all, let alone from the app devs you mentioned. I will admit that the iOS is nice and simple, but I find its more geared towards the non-technologically inclined. Perhaps the Android OS just isn't for you?

Hey there... I am a programmer and web designer, grew up building custom computers and web sites and programming a lot, so I am familiar with the open source platforms and the more tech-related aspects of technology. That being said, Android itself has to far to go it's almost not even work dealing with. I don't know why I am having these issues, maybe its growing pains but that being said, I was expecting a completely different experience. So many things are absent from Android and so many things simply don't work. Overall I'm disappointed with the browsing experience most.... half of the time the pages don't finish rendering by the time I get to the bottom, and I'm on a 20Mb connection and am only running the browser on the tablet..... I'm so torn here
If one does a search of the general section here in the TF700T forum using the word "disappointed" about 20 or so threads will show up.
A lot to wade thru for sure...it's all pretty much been covered however.

Well, you are right about the browser, if iirc out of the box, the browser sucks. If you want to give it another chance you might look into browser2ram. You can search it here on the forum and I think its on the play store, really takes care of the browser sluggishness. Just a note most of the issues with this tablet in particular aren't Android OS related, per se, a lot of the issues come from things Asus has done/ not fixed yet. I have several other Android devices that required no tweaking at all to run well right out of the box. If your interested in getting really into increasing performance/bug fixes, the CleanRom custom rom is supposed to be the best, but be warned, unlocking your bootloader to do custom roms/recoveries voids your warranty. Given that your device is new this may not be for you. The best thing I can suggest is deciding if all the work you may need to put into the tablet to get it the way you like it worth the time to you, if not, the iPad may indeed be more useful to you. The closed enviroment of the iPad has its advantages.

Do you judge everything and everyone within 24 hours of getting to know it/him/her? The Hynix storage controller was a bad, bad decision by ASUS, w' all agree, but a good custom ROM fixes a lot of the problems. You should not have to void your warranty to get a well-performing device, though, so I'd say I agree.

I prefer the open source aspect of android, but wow, this tablet was a complete let down. My business partner's ipad 1 is still a better and smoother experience than this piece of junk.

The TF700 should outperform the iPad 1 and 2 out of the box, and should do the same to the iPad 3 when tweaked.

Again, a blanket statement which is not that valid at all. This is just your point of view -- I can work with all my Android pretty effectively and efficiently (save the LG O2x which happens to be a VERY, VERY bad device).
I don't know why I am having these issues, maybe its growing pains but that being said, I was expecting a completely different experience.

Based on the numbers, it does sound like a golden device, and again, I agree that out of the box, the storage system should have performed much better.

No issues on sotck browser, but then I use Brwoser2RAM as well -- makes the browsing significantly faster and pleasurable.

This really helps -- or just install CROMI and be done.
You can search it here on the forum and I think its on the play store, really takes care of the browser sluggishness. Just a note most of the issues with this tablet in particular aren't Android OS related, per se, a lot of the issues come from things Asus has done/ not fixed yet.

Samesung, for example, has a knack for making very good devices that just perform out of the box.
If your interested in getting really into increasing performance/bug fixes, the CleanRom custom rom is supposed to be the best, but be warned, unlocking your bootloader to do custom roms/recoveries voids your warranty. Given that your device is new this may not be for you.

Especially when there's the even slightest hint of returning or selling.
The best thing I can suggest is deciding if all the work you may need to put into the tablet to get it the way you like it worth the time to you, if not, the iPad may indeed be more useful to you. The closed enviroment of the iPad has its advantages.

The TF700, actually all Asus tablets, suffer from some unique performance and multitasking issues caused by the design (h/w) choices Asus made. Do a search on “Asus IO issues” either on XDA or Google. The "best" Android tablet in terms of performance, functions, and features available right now is the Note 10.1. Sadly, to your point about compromise, it only has a 147 PPI 720P display which makes it a non-starter for quite a few people. The Nexus 10 is a great Android tablet on paper but suffers from QC issues and a lot of folks find the phone UI Google's using on it both odd and a bit barren feature's wise. At $499 for the 32GB version with no SD slot for expansion it’s no bargain either. Samsung's releasing their own version of the N10 (P5200) which might be a true iPad competitor in performance, functions, features, and hopefully quality. It’ll have an SD card slot and most likely multiview which is a killer feature on a 10” tablet and something that will set it apart from the iPad. It’s supposed to be announced on the 19th and available in March. Maybe that's worth a look before abandoning Android all together.

I know why you're having these issues. (I feel like that baby in those V8 commercials, *bop* you on the head)
you're doing development work with a ASUS Transformer Infinity IS your problem.
The Transformer Infinity TF700T, TF300, and TF201 / Prime tablet all have underline software (but more likely) hardware problems that are the reason they at times perform very slow. ASUS to-date still haven't resolved this with any update release, which is why I'm teetering to think this is hardware.
OP you should have gone with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, or Galaxy Note 10.1 for your testing. SAMSUNG is quality, ASUS is just hype and they got a lot press from being the first to show off a keyboard docking tablet that can convert easily to a netbook. Fast forward nearly 2 years later and everyone copied the idea and doing it far better than ASUS.

What are these "far better than ASUS" "keyboard docking tablet that can convert easily to a netbook" you speak of? I only know of asus transformer line that can do this on android... I've been searching for higher resolution / better build quality alternative to asus transformer for a long time now and I haven't found any. (we are talking about tablets that jave keyboard docks which house extra battery, extra connections, extra storage, etc.)
I would probably stand in line for a Samsung built 10" (or bigger) tablets with nexus 10-like screen resolution that comes with detachable keyboard dock (transformer style; form tablet to notebook quick and easy) housing extra battery, storage and connections. If it came with vanilla android sans all bloatware I'd probably camp in front of the store to get one.
Something like this was rumored as part of the Samsungs Project J (now called Altius) but according to the latest leaks these rumors might not have been true :crying:
I really really really want a well built high end tablet transformer running android (I'd settle for other non-Apple && non-M$ OSes if need be), but I just can't buy one.
Commit or don't. Unlock your bootloader. Install CROMI, hell, do a dual boot with ubuntu Linux. My tf700 does almost everything my laptop can do as long as I can make the software run on an ARM cpu..
You brag about how 1337 you are, so put your mind to work and make the device work for you. I HATED the TF700 until I dumped all the stock software. the stock rom is worthless. Mine is fast and the battery lasts all damn day. I can't complain. and if Android won't do it, Linux will. The screen resolution is right, the compliment of hardware is decent and the dock with external battery is the single BEST feature it's got.
but the stock software does suck, but it's all written in C, not HTML/PHP. Be 1337 or return it and get your money back. I love mine. I personally will NEVER bite into the Apple. iOS sucks and it always will. I like being able to download the source code that runs my device and modify it the way I see fit. that's why the only mac/windows machines I use are virtual and running on my Linux box.
Buy the hardware you want and make the software you want or stfu.
and where does it say this is the "Premier Android Tablet"? It's not the Transformer Nexus... then it would be a Premier device.
sounds like yours has an ID 10 T error.

The TF700 is very disappointing in its stock state. You shouldn't have to do it to make your tablet run fast and smooth, but you should unlock the bootloader and put CleanROM on it. Further, you can go into "Developer Options" under "Settings" and disable all animations. I couldn't stand looking at the slide-show animations, so now everything pops up and opens/closes instantly and smoothly. While you're in the "Developer Options", you can also turn on "Force GPU Rendering" which helps as well.
As with some devices like the G-Tab, some phones, and the TF700, you have to unlock them and put different ROM's on them to make them run like they should've from the factory to begin with.
Once you unlock, install a ROM, and do a few tweaks (and use a different browser like Boat Browser), I think you'll be pleased at the performance of your TF700.
Uh boy...
I shouldn't be posting an opinion since the last go around thread complaining about the Infinity.
Most people that show up here on XDA are looking for an answer, guide to tweaking or perhaps even trying to help.
I get so tired of these threads touting disappointment with a device.
We all know there are bugs, deficiencies, better options, damage out of the box, on and on...
If it breaks or causes frowning return or get the frigging thing fixed.
Why the drive to whine about it here?
I wish the moderation team could gather all the booboo threads and put them in their own section so they were easier to avoid.
Then the roving gangs of haters could hang together outside of the HELP forums.

Totally agree @thats ok
This started life as a development site, hint is in the name. I wish I could avoid these posts as well.
I come here to read about, discover and maybe release some cool mods/developments. There are other websites you can post your dissatisfaction to Asus on. They certainly won't do anything with it here.
And the answer to the issues. Unlock and flash a custom rom. How ironic.

My first Android experience ws with an LG O2x --the worst smartphone ever the carry that designation -- and I was mainly on MoDaCo then. My next device was a Samsung SGS2 (you live, you learn), and I went over to XDA. Looking back, it strikes me how friendly and open I perceived that forum to be, and that could have to do with the overall excllence of the device itself. Nonetheless, even the SGS2 has (had) its fair share of bugs and quirkyness, but it seemed so much easier to handle for some. I still don't understand why, since every appliance known to mankind has its faults, whether that is a flintstone hammer or the Space Shuttle. Going by that example: the more technologically advanced the appliance, the more opportunity for (fatal) error.
If it breaks or causes frowning return or get the frigging thing fixed.

You're growing old, -that -- but then I guess so am I. I'm far from retirement age (partly unfortunately ) --I'm 34-- but even online I sense that life experience makes me react differently than, say, ten years ago. It's not all good, but I guess it is a normal development. I guess pretty much anything has changed over time, but we'll have to cope with it.
Have to agree stock was not all that impressive. With clean rom it is a great machine. I have to say ipad is smooth but just seems made for the simple type person. I personally love the way I get to tinker with Android systems, I think most of us are on XDA for that reason.

You're right Marty
I do get grumpy a lot...
Remember the "buttery smooth" claims from ICS to JB...man when the switch happened that's when I really started frowning.
One day I said "ok that's it" and forced myself to improve things with a custom set-up.
Thank goodness I have never had the mechanical bugs that were so often reported by others.
Whew!

App loading time is crazy slow.... i feel like i'm working on a 486 here..... browsing speed and rendering is terrible also.... I can't believe you guys are able to actually be productive on this thing. It's most likely going in a drawer full of other ****ty devices i've bought over the years.

Having owned a couple of ipads (1 and 2), I can tell you that iOS does crash just like all other operating systems. I've been working with many different OSes over the years, and apps crashing is an unavoidable part of life.
The reason people think iOS doesn't crash is because Apple made the decision to not inform people when something has crashed. It's pretty clever, actually. In windows, android, Linux, and everything else, whenever something crashes there is an error message telling you an error has occurred and so-and-so. But in iOS, when something crashes, you just end up back in the home screen. Most people at this point would think that they accidentally pressed the wrong button or the home button. And also, the lack of an error message means there's no interruption of experience causing the user to not remember.
I have to agree with some others here. You bragged about being a 1337 and then you went ahead and showed us you don't really know much about the systems.
I recently sold my infinity and bought an asus vivotab rt. After having used the vivotab rt for about a week, holy cow this thing is great. Both android and iOS are slow and sluggish compared to windows rt. If you want something that flies, get a windows rt tablet.
I'm amazed how there is no lag time between swipes. It's amazing to watch the screen following your finger without delay.
Another one of these? Is it really that hard to post it in an existing thread? Or do you fear you won't get as much attention if you do? Look at meeeeeeeeee, what I have to say is more important than the other person saying the exact same thing!
Let me explain a vital difference to you. XDA is a Developers forum. Not a 'moan about how a product doesn't meet your insanely high expectations' forum. And it certainly is not a 'compare it to an iCrap' forum!
