Which Rom? - General Questions and Answers

This is my first post and, I am truly sorry if I did not see anything already in General about a Rom Selection.
My first root is going to be a EVO 3D. I have found your page on doing so and it was very useful. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192245)
I just need suggestions on what ROM to take on. I saw that the biggest are the mikG and Viper rom. If my understanding is correct you can get better battery life with Viper? Thats what I am aiming for.
Also once flashed could I go back to the original stock rom, lets say if sprint found out? or my phone broke and I needed to get a new one? I am sure some sort of warranty is not valid.
Also would Windows be the best option to root with or could I just use my iMac?
I greatly appreciate your time and if I am overstepping my bounds then I would be glad if you could point me in the right direction.
Thanks much.
Culljosh

This may be better suited for the evo3d section in q and a or general.
However, I could highly recommend both roms though i am not a e3d user. Once you are rooted make a back up. There are RUU'S which will take you back to stock if necessary though it is no longer sprints policy to take action on rooted phones.
I honestly don't keep backups unless I am going to flash something new and had a flawless setup prior. Just have fun and keep a backup of what is working, as in backup as soon as you root. Get titanium backup also, for your apps.
You will most likely flash a lot of roms initially until you find one you love. Or your dev updates every few days. Have fun!
On the platform, I am not familiar with the new exploit but I am sure they support both Mac and pc
P.S give Viperrom a go for me, I am jealous he is over there and I am here... though he left behind a great mod for us evo users.

Much appreciated for the info.
I did not know if I could post in any other section cause I am new.
I think I am going to have to have 10 posts before I can.
Regardless thanks for the information and pointing me in the right direction.
CHEERS.

You only need 10 posts to post in development sections.
You are welcome. If you try out viperrom will you let me know what you think?

I logged on to leave feedback for other flashers and keep getting a bulletin message saying I need 10 posts...... so here I am writing nonsense on threads I am not interested in.
Even 5 posts would be good to eek out the spammers.
Right...... only 4 more random comments to make.

Request: Glossary?

I get the sense that a lot of the folks here like to rely on making people REEEEALLY hit the forums and read stuff (read: patience test) as a means of throttling just how quickly a new person comes into the forums and then proceeds to attempt device customization, and for better or worse, I get that---and for the most part, agree. Maybe I'm even just seeing things, but even so. *shrug*
I've been VERY hesitant to go doing stuff to my phone with all the "REED MOAR" warnings out there, since it's my lifeline phone; we haven't had a land line for several years now. But even for me, there's still plenty of stuff I just don't know, and I don't know that I want to sift through every single post on the forums just to find a little broader knowledge base, especially with the forums having the overload issues I've been seeing lately.
I like to be an informed buyer. I HATE impulse buying something because "this guy I know said it was cool". I want to know the EXACT nature of what I'm getting before I go for it---even if it's being provided to me for free (which XDA has in spades, which is SPECTACULAR. I LOVE that you guys pour your time into that for everyone else).
But I always get the feeling that I've missed most of the conversation when people throw around some of the acronyms still; like everyone just sorta already knows what it all means, and I'm the only one on the outside. XD ((Note: I'd like to call attention to bdemartino's [GUIDE] Newbie's Step-by-Step: From Stock USCC Mesmerize -> Custom Rom/Kernel as a specific exception to this rule; he answered a few of the questions I was going to post in this thread in his EC10 guide))
So here's where I'm going with this.
Could we set up, specifically in the Samsung Mesmerize general forum (and maybe the other forums as well, though that's a tall order, I see there are TONS of phone models supported at XDA!), a more advanced glossary? Like, if you don't know what a ROM or Flashing is, or Froyo vs. Eclair, you definitely *do* need more reading before jumping in (so they say), but I'm talking more specifics.
TL;DR: I'd love to see a stickied glossary thread I can come to that's updated regularly enough to keep up with the new terms, ROMs, etc. that come out, so the new(er) people, or those who aren't hanging out in the IRC channel (if that's where all this explaining is going on, LOL) can come to find out just what's out there for them to try.
Some specific terms I don't know, or formerly didn't know but managed to discover with some digging, that would make a great starter to the Glossary:
Pick-n-Pack
CWM Recovery
No-Clock
Puzzle Lock
5-lock
AOSP
Superclean
Please note I'm not after just a response that just list-answers what all of those are (though that would definitely be appreciated); as I say, I already know maybe half of them. I'm after a few sentences, a couple paragraphs, that define the specific nature of those terms so someone just coming into the Android thing like me can go to one place and read them over. Nothing with instructions, just definitions, lists of what's included if it's a ROM, etc.
Is that something we could do? Is it a bad idea in that it arms the over-anxious, not-yet-prepared new Android user with a dangerous level of information?
I think is is a great idea as a newbee myself I had and still have to dig through post after post all the time to try and figure out how to do things. It should be relatively easy to set up one thread that can be a go to for all of us.

Agree that would be helpful

I concur and would be willing to write up a starter if someone would be willing to update and maintain it as I'm short on time these days

Im constantly digging through posts myself especially when it comes to modding that ive never done before and its always a bummer cause its takes me 2 hours to find exactly what I was looking for only for it to be a 5 minute post that explains it all. +1

I'm seeing in other threads that people are wanting this there too. So.....
I think I'm gonna take on my own request, especially if I've got the backing of Bdemartino. I mean I've learned a good amount of terms so far, but I know I've got a LOT to learn. Still, one consolidated post would be great---and then people could just reply to the thread with requests or suggestions for stuff to be added to the first post.
Bdem, I'll get with you over PM in a moment here, and either over PM or IRC or something, whichever we work out, we can out our heads together sometime this week and I can collect what all you have, and on the slim chance I have something else I want to add myself (Laughable!) I'll do so. XD

Sounds great , It'll be very beneficial to the community!
I agree that would be a great tool to have. I spent many a sleepless night when I got my mesmerize, searching for roms, mods, kernels...would have been easier had I known what they actually were beforehand

I'm going to post to you what I thought was a major discovery for me at the time when I found all these terms confusing myself and got a bit of clarity. The terms I just learnt this past week:
Odin
Deodexed
AOSP
TwLauncher
blue/red/orange recovery
.tar
nandroid
BLN
Hopefully you can get some clarity from other members as to what exactly these terms are as I know kind of what they are, I can't really place them with words as well as other members could.
I will try to contribute as much to this thread as I can because this is exactly what I needed when I first came here but i didn't have the time to research it all.
Wow... some great feedback, and already some pledges of help! Maybe I'd better start the actual thread... XD
I've already got a prelim post in the works. @alaindesjardins, DEFINITELY post definitions of the terms you've listed below. I plan to basically merge any and all points of information about a term together. Anyone who contributes will get credited, and it just makes for that much stronger and more accurate of a glossary. There are actually one or two terms in your list I don't actually know yet!
......In thinking about it, here's my plan: I'll collect what alaindesjardins and bdemartino get me, mix my own stuff in, and merge it all together to form the original Glossary post, and mark it as under construction till I get it all cleaned up and polished. Once it's more or less "complete" at that point, I'll pull the under construction notice, and just let terms get added to it as we go. Official glossary post once I've gotten the contributions I'm after.
Thanks guys!

[Q] Can Someone Confirm My Phones Back To Stock To Be Returned

I am asking all please don't attack me for posting this as I am but I am desperate....
Hi, I wanted to ask after installing the Stock UVKD1 – Flashable T959VuVKD1zip file will T-Mobile be able to tell I was rooted at one time? What happened is.. I was rooted and after flashing this I wasn't. Not accusing anyone, actually glad because it gave me a reason to return the phone. This purchase wasn't planned but because I own the Vibrant 3g (1st one phone) and love it, love the themes, everything about it. So at T-Mobile store saw 4g and bought it. Nothing like the Vibrant.
The ones that have contributed to this site have been amazing!!! It's too bad that there are so many with just gripes and complaints. Over at the Vibrant sites everyone works together and it's fun. Not a developer, have had many soft bricks but have fun with my phone and enjoy learning.
This is long because I have seen so many attack others and hope people won't waste their time on me because I am returning the phone and haven't posted anything before this anticipating someone would jump on me about where I posted or the answer is elsewhere "go to that forum".
The fact is that everything I have looked at and I have looked everywhere people are having problems and everyone's is a little different than mine so I just want to know if with this rom on my phone can I return it to T-Mobile, to day is the 19th day and I only have 20.
Thanks in advance for any answer someone can provide me with.
im not sure but I don't think you can get D1 over the air right now. however, that doesn't mean you rooted the phone, just that you flashed it. I suspect they might feel the same way about that though. If I was you I would flash from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978836 and then remove root as explained in that forum.
Please feel free to thank this post if this helped.

I don't think you read my post completely. I know I am not rooted. I do have some knowledge about what to do or I wouldn't be messing with a phone, this was going to be my main phone and I kept my Vibrant to play with and learn.
I was only asking about the rom because I didn't know what rom was on the phone when purchased.

Well since this KD1 Rom is a t-mobile update, I don't think you'll have any issues returning it. I would unroot the phone though (if is rooted). I'm not an expert; I'm like on the same boat as you are which is learning all this great stuff, but would t-mobile be able to tell if you were rooted once? not really sure.

Thanks for the help. I removed all signs of root so after I swap out the 32 card for the 16 finish getting that straight I should be in good shape.
You might know this, where was the movie on the phone? I zipped it and got off right away so I don't even remember. If you know that would be great.

What problems were you having with it anyhow?
It sounds like you must have been trying to make modifications to it that are either untested or not designed to work properly with the SGS4G.
I know alot of people call it the Vibrant 4G but it's not the same, there are alot of differences with it, so it's easy for someone with less experience to mess it up. Not saying you don't have experience, but it sounds like you breeze through phones quicker than the flick of a light switch.

I thought you might have helped being that it was your thread i got the rom from and I asked the question there, sent you a pm but this is the last day to return (typing while files are moving from one sd to the other). Wrong again, you seemed to be one of the ones actually developing something for this phone and not wasting time to criticize people. Glad to be returning the phone and returning to the Vibrant forum.
People should do what I'm about to before buying a phone they want to mess with and that is check out these forums what's going with the development and if there are an overwhelming amount of negativity. And I know that's what some of you did, just thought I'd save someone the time of posting it.
Once again I am learning as I'm sure some others out there are too.

I have 2 phones the one I am exchanging (returning) the Sam T959V Galaxy S 4 and the Sam T959 Vibrant. That's at least how it's printed on the boxes.
I have not done anything from the Vibrant forum on the Galaxy S 4g phone. I flashed the rom from the thread you posted and went from root to no root. All SU apps wouldn't even open because what was needed wasn't in the needed directory(s).
All's good. Thanks.

It honestly doesn't have much to do with negativity.
More so with forum etiquette. I'm not trying to be rude to you, I merely telling you, no matter how much you post "Don't flame me" "don't be negative"...
If you post in the wrong forum anywhere on XDA, you're gonna get a negative response. That's a given not specific to this section.
I didn't see your post over there, until just now. Again cross posting is a no no, I understand you needed and answer. The best place for that would have been the general forum. not the development forum. It clearly says General Q&A section.
You can return the phone, I love my SGS4G and it works great. It seems like your mixing the two issues. Other than a few people on here, the majority get along just fine with no issues.

Either way I don't fault you, but don't bag on this forum because you don't know the right section to post in, and you haven't even posted for help regarding the "issues" with your SGS4G.

Didn't have a problem with the cards and don't have a problem with the phone either so I didn't go over to the threads you posted. I have the sd card that came with the phone and the 32 as well as a 16 for the T959. Use my computer a lot to transfer files and have multiple directories to keep it all separate. No problem there.
If I hadn't bought it after the T959 I am sure I would be keeping it as you are. The amount of development here on XDA is great and I didn't realize that the 2nd memory card (the internal on the T959) that is used like a 2nd sd card but at the same time like the internal memory on all the other phones was removed on the SGS4G. Became spoiled with that as well as the builds on the T959 for themes, mods, roms, etc. Don't mean to insult anyone so please don't take it that way.

Yeah I hear you. I came from a G1 so it was an upgrade. Not much of an upgrade for a vibrant user.
The threads I posted were actually quotes from posts that you had posted on other forums indicating you had issues, but not in the SGS4G forums, in the vibrant forums.
Glad you have no issues with it. No harm done, just to avoid this always check which forum your posting in and try to avoid cross posting.

T-Mobile customer service and I called the store, but I have been so side tracked I didn't even there. Tomorrow is my 20th day technically and just noticed I had a lock screen on it the phone I need to get off so maybe I'll just keep this too and try and make some changes to it to make it fun.
Customer service has been wrong before, but I have always worked things out with them. Been with them since 2000 and am down to 5 lines from 7 and a data line so they have been pretty good but then again I guess policy is policy. Then again I do know that customer service (return by mail) was up to 30 days and the store was way shorter. I am surprised it was 20.

Its a couple extra steps, and doesn't really take much longer than flashing a rooted rom file. Plus flashing the patched HBoot is safer, and for how "easy" this is.. I wouldn't expect any dev to take the time and make just a "rooted" version of the rom to flash.
Odd. I don't see anything in the forum rules that say people should ask for help. I don't blame the guy for asking. Why not? What's next--create your own ROM, why should others do it? Figure out your own root method instead of asking someone if they have?
For all the people who give the guy grief about asking, maybe someone else will say, "yeah, that's a good idea" and help the guy (and others) out.

I think it's more that this person is asking in multiple places for a few hours. Coulda had it done by now. Just rubs some people the wrong way.
Wow guys, well I think I can officially say XDA is no longer the same site I thought it was....
FYI, I had already done the posted method no problem. The only reason I made this thread was in an effort to request if a developer (of which I am not) could create a simple ROM that would help other newbies out and make it an easy one-flash task so they don't have to worry. But no, I guess it's a sin to be a newbie now huh? How dare anyone request something so simple from a developer (especially when a well known dev already spent more work creating another version of the same ROM). So this should be even harder for them to do right? And honestly, why anyone sees this thread as a forceful obligation for someone to fulfill the request is beyond me.
Very productive and helpful posts everyone. Great job at showing how supportive XDA has become...
You do realize pulling the rom.zip from an RUU takes about 2 minutes to accomplish, including the time it takes to google the "how-to". But you would rather bother a dev to do it for you, adding the trouble of having to wait the 20+ minutes to upload the 350MB file to waste precious personal server space for a single person's downloading convenience. A 2 minute job turned 30 minutes of someone else's time cus you didn't feel like it. The difference between a good noob and a bad noob: good noob asks how to get roms from RUUs, bad noob tells someone else to do it for them without hesitation.

Oh please, you are defending yourself ex post facto because you were attacked for being shown that if it matters that much to help the new commers you could make what you wanted pretty quickly by following a how-to. If you really want to help them, you could have probably finished the how-to and posted it in the time you took to complain.
It's great to do things for anyone new and I am all for it (which is why in the few months I have been an official member, I have 60+ "thanks," most of which came from answering questions or giving out useful information.
No one is attacking you for wanting to help noobs, but people will call you out when you claim to want to help and are shown, but ignore it anyways. It comes back to the quote:
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

If all someone said was to google it or do this yourself without telling you how it could be done with links or something then that would be messed up, but they did not. They gave you links in both this thread and the other (the other thread giving you EXACTLY what you requested in a link).
IMHO if you really want to help those you say you want to help, you could create a post in the developer's forum linking to the post that someone gave you in the other topic from rootzwiki. That way they can be pointed in the right direction.

[Q] *New User* How to get Gingerbread on Samsung Infuse

Hello all, I'm new to Android, with my new Infuse 4g.
I was disappointed to find out that this phone still has froyo, even though ICS is out. Can I please get some Gingerbread?!
I know this is probably out there somewhere but I've been on this site for about an hour now and I haven't gotten the hang of navigating through it properly yet. If someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction, so that I'd be able to hack/root gingerbread onto my phone, that'd be lovely. I already found out how to root it, with SuperOneClick. I just need to figure out how to get gingerbread mod.
Again I'm completely new to android and I don't know the terminology. So please be kind.
Thanks ahead of time.
EDIT: I have an AT&T samsung infuse that is unlocked, but I use T-mobile for my cellular service. (If that matters)
First...go to the development section

thanks
Herp-a-derp
That would be a good start. Thanks!
Welcome to Android and XDA!
Try THIS thread out first, its got a lot of useful information, in fact, it's my obligatory "noob" post for new users lol. (Pay special attention to the ClockWorkMod or CWM part, that'll be your best friend.)
The Infuse was my first android phone too, and I loved it. When you do get to the point where your ready to install a Gingerbread rom, check THIS one out. It's not the most current rom out right now, but the developer has some killer instructions to get you started. If you mess up, there are plenty of ways to get you back to normal.
Once you've got that up and running, you can head back to the development section and try out Revelation Rom or Zeus Rom (both great and up to date Roms)
Last but not least, the "thanks" button is a good way to show your appreciation for ppl that have helped you out, it's down there VVVV
Sorry...did not mean to post that. Was going to write up a long post then had to take my son to the bathroom. Thought I backed out....posted instead.
I think it was covered in the post below mine.
My advice...read, read, read. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Just best to do so in the Q&A. And try all the roms out. All are supported by great developers. Try them all...then find a home.

try this man
Try this bible link below for the infused. worked perfectly for me.

[q] help from me on xda or in pm/gtalk ?

I help A LOT of people here on xda all day everyday some donate some don't. its very hard to help people on xda cus when helping them other people jump in and start either telling the person im helping don't do that do this or they just plain old spam. i have helped a very large amount of people on g talk and they have told me they like to be helped MORE on g talk than on xda because we have 100% full privacy to do what we need to do. please choose how you like to be helped Either xda or PM or g talk. at the end of the week ill count all of them up and from the results i will help people based on the results on this thanks very much.
To put the poll into better context I believe that you should also read this thread Although I've quoted the relevant posts below:

Hello, Paul,
Firstly, thanks (again) for your input into the forum. I'm genuinely not intending to create conflict here or trying to play the role of a mod. Now, I know that you've had this sort of comment before, but, I agreed with it then and I'm afraid that I still do.
While at times the PM route can be useful to resolve issues, it shouldn't be the only or primary option. The whole principle of XDA is openness and sharing, so resolving an issue in thread permits that the next user(s) (and there is always another, who suffers from the exact same problem) from hopefully using the Search function and then following the resolution from the thread by themselves.
That way we're working towards creating a valuable resource rather than loosing useful input into hidden PMs.
PM's do have there place for 'user to user' communication, that would otherwise populate the forum unnecessarily but once a thread has been created I believe that it should be used to reolve the original issue.
If a new user needs that much hand holding then one wonders whether they should be risking their £200-£400 device in the first place! before reading up some more....

me helping people over PM is better because its faster and more safer for the person im helping. if im trying to guide him then other people jump in and comment he isnt going to know who to listen to and he will get very confused. this has happend before. by helping over PM or my gmail is better for them, and me. and i ALWAYS ask them after to write a guide as to how i helped them and what they did. i at NO point mean to upset anyone. but you have got to understand that this is the only way that i can help these people as you may well know here on xda people have got there opinions and they like to jump in whenever they want. if i tell him to do somthing some1 might jump in and say no or do this and do that. i have had EVERYONE i have helped say thanks to me and its better this way. i have helped MANY people achieve proper s-off. i will no open a poll. and it will ask the people of xda if they would prefer to be helped via PM or Gtalk or on here. if more people prefer xda then i will start helping via xda

As someone whom Paul has helped through gtalk, It was very beneficial to me as we were able to quickly and easily communicate, as any other method is rather slow and crude. I definitely do agree with your point on xda being a repository for information however, therefore communicating through gtalk or similar could withhold information from other users. However I have now written up a short guide of what I did to solve my problem on the original thread, and I believe that if people do this then everyone wins tbh, and it has the added advantage of the treads being shorter and more concise, therefore it is easier to find the relevant information.
As someone who has done all his stiff by reading through threads and others opinions, I will always advocate all discussions on XDA

On the 16th the poll will close and whatever the winning method is thats the way i will help people from now on. i do wish ALL people will take something out of the way i help them. as me getting them properly s-off uses alot of things like commands running adb , fastboot and so on. by helping them do these things it then in turn helps them. as if i didnt help them and they needed to to adb or fastboot commands and they never knew howto that could result in a not needed thread being opened **How to use adb or fastboot** this is a good way for me to help these people. i think people should help people the way they do and let other people carry on with the ways they do things. ( no offence meant ben your opinion means alot to me your a good person ) but if it states in the rules ( only help people on xda ) then i will stop if it dont then i will carry on as im not doing anything wrong. and even so if you guys think your losing out on infomation. i will open up a guide covering absolutly EVERYTHING on the desire s from fastboot adb changing roms, splash, radio, hboot and covering everything on what the desire s is capable of doing. what limits it has and other things. this in a sense will be the desire s XDA user guide let me know if u think thats a good isea ben. and as i go along anything i help people out with thats not in the new guide ill just update it ????????????

I do but there are already several threads like this, so one must be careful not to pollute the forum with too many similar guides which would just lead to further confusion.
There is the Complete Tutorial for beginners and others, but I'm guessing yours would be a more technical and slightly more advanced version?

The one thing I would say though, is rather than re-invent not just the wheel but the car, I'd recommend that you source, link and reference as much of the existing documentation where ever possible.

hey guys, Would just like to add to this After searching throughout the forum day and night i got what information i needed to root and s-off my desire s. After following all the instructions letter by letter i was still have errors and problem after problem. paul.robo kindly asked me if i wanted his help and i accepted using Gtalk. I can not begin to express at how helpful he was and was there to guide me through each error. After a good few steps i finally got to where i wanted to be. In no way was i able to find out why i was having these errors if he weren't there to check them as it was happening. To go through this in forum style replys would take days and to much work. Gtalk is a brilliant and direct help for occasions like these and would recommend his help and wisdom to all. Thanks again mate Much appreciated
