[Q] *New User* How to get Gingerbread on Samsung Infuse - Samsung Infuse 4G

Hello all, I'm new to Android, with my new Infuse 4g.
I was disappointed to find out that this phone still has froyo, even though ICS is out. Can I please get some Gingerbread?!
I know this is probably out there somewhere but I've been on this site for about an hour now and I haven't gotten the hang of navigating through it properly yet. If someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction, so that I'd be able to hack/root gingerbread onto my phone, that'd be lovely. I already found out how to root it, with SuperOneClick. I just need to figure out how to get gingerbread mod.
Again I'm completely new to android and I don't know the terminology. So please be kind.
Thanks ahead of time.
EDIT: I have an AT&T samsung infuse that is unlocked, but I use T-mobile for my cellular service. (If that matters)

First...go to the development section
Sent from a phone.

thanks
Herp-a-derp
That would be a good start. Thanks!

Welcome to Android and XDA!
Try THIS thread out first, its got a lot of useful information, in fact, it's my obligatory "noob" post for new users lol. (Pay special attention to the ClockWorkMod or CWM part, that'll be your best friend.)
The Infuse was my first android phone too, and I loved it. When you do get to the point where your ready to install a Gingerbread rom, check THIS one out. It's not the most current rom out right now, but the developer has some killer instructions to get you started. If you mess up, there are plenty of ways to get you back to normal.
Once you've got that up and running, you can head back to the development section and try out Revelation Rom or Zeus Rom (both great and up to date Roms)
Last but not least, the "thanks" button is a good way to show your appreciation for ppl that have helped you out, it's down there VVVV

Sorry...did not mean to post that. Was going to write up a long post then had to take my son to the bathroom. Thought I backed out....posted instead.
I think it was covered in the post below mine.
My advice...read, read, read. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Just best to do so in the Q&A. And try all the roms out. All are supported by great developers. Try them all...then find a home.
Sent from a phone.

try this man
Try this bible link below for the infused. worked perfectly for me.

[Q] Can Someone Confirm My Phones Back To Stock To Be Returned

I am asking all please don't attack me for posting this as I am but I am desperate....
Hi, I wanted to ask after installing the Stock UVKD1 – Flashable T959VuVKD1zip file will T-Mobile be able to tell I was rooted at one time? What happened is.. I was rooted and after flashing this I wasn't. Not accusing anyone, actually glad because it gave me a reason to return the phone. This purchase wasn't planned but because I own the Vibrant 3g (1st one phone) and love it, love the themes, everything about it. So at T-Mobile store saw 4g and bought it. Nothing like the Vibrant.
The ones that have contributed to this site have been amazing!!! It's too bad that there are so many with just gripes and complaints. Over at the Vibrant sites everyone works together and it's fun. Not a developer, have had many soft bricks but have fun with my phone and enjoy learning.
This is long because I have seen so many attack others and hope people won't waste their time on me because I am returning the phone and haven't posted anything before this anticipating someone would jump on me about where I posted or the answer is elsewhere "go to that forum".
The fact is that everything I have looked at and I have looked everywhere people are having problems and everyone's is a little different than mine so I just want to know if with this rom on my phone can I return it to T-Mobile, to day is the 19th day and I only have 20.
Thanks in advance for any answer someone can provide me with.
im not sure but I don't think you can get D1 over the air right now. however, that doesn't mean you rooted the phone, just that you flashed it. I suspect they might feel the same way about that though. If I was you I would flash from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978836 and then remove root as explained in that forum.
Please feel free to thank this post if this helped.
wrong section .. should have asked in general but download root checker if it says no root then you are fine

I don't think you read my post completely. I know I am not rooted. I do have some knowledge about what to do or I wouldn't be messing with a phone, this was going to be my main phone and I kept my Vibrant to play with and learn.
I was only asking about the rom because I didn't know what rom was on the phone when purchased.

Well since this KD1 Rom is a t-mobile update, I don't think you'll have any issues returning it. I would unroot the phone though (if is rooted). I'm not an expert; I'm like on the same boat as you are which is learning all this great stuff, but would t-mobile be able to tell if you were rooted once? not really sure.

Thanks for the help. I removed all signs of root so after I swap out the 32 card for the 16 finish getting that straight I should be in good shape.
You might know this, where was the movie on the phone? I zipped it and got off right away so I don't even remember. If you know that would be great.

#1 wrong section, please read before posting in a section that is defined for development only, not general questions.
#2 TMobile retails stores won't even care, probably won't even check.
#3 If they did check, as long as you are on build T959VUVKB5 or KD1 your fine.

What problems were you having with it anyhow?
It sounds like you must have been trying to make modifications to it that are either untested or not designed to work properly with the SGS4G.
I know alot of people call it the Vibrant 4G but it's not the same, there are alot of differences with it, so it's easy for someone with less experience to mess it up. Not saying you don't have experience, but it sounds like you breeze through phones quicker than the flick of a light switch.

I thought you might have helped being that it was your thread i got the rom from and I asked the question there, sent you a pm but this is the last day to return (typing while files are moving from one sd to the other). Wrong again, you seemed to be one of the ones actually developing something for this phone and not wasting time to criticize people. Glad to be returning the phone and returning to the Vibrant forum.
People should do what I'm about to before buying a phone they want to mess with and that is check out these forums what's going with the development and if there are an overwhelming amount of negativity. And I know that's what some of you did, just thought I'd save someone the time of posting it.
Once again I am learning as I'm sure some others out there are too.

I have 2 phones the one I am exchanging (returning) the Sam T959V Galaxy S 4 and the Sam T959 Vibrant. That's at least how it's printed on the boxes.
I have not done anything from the Vibrant forum on the Galaxy S 4g phone. I flashed the rom from the thread you posted and went from root to no root. All SU apps wouldn't even open because what was needed wasn't in the needed directory(s).
All's good. Thanks.

It honestly doesn't have much to do with negativity.
More so with forum etiquette. I'm not trying to be rude to you, I merely telling you, no matter how much you post "Don't flame me" "don't be negative"...
If you post in the wrong forum anywhere on XDA, you're gonna get a negative response. That's a given not specific to this section.
I didn't see your post over there, until just now. Again cross posting is a no no, I understand you needed and answer. The best place for that would have been the general forum. not the development forum. It clearly says General Q&A section.
You can return the phone, I love my SGS4G and it works great. It seems like your mixing the two issues. Other than a few people on here, the majority get along just fine with no issues.

So if you have gone through 103 phones in one year, than either you're extremely picky, or you just like new phones.
Either way I don't fault you, but don't bag on this forum because you don't know the right section to post in, and you haven't even posted for help regarding the "issues" with your SGS4G.

Didn't have a problem with the cards and don't have a problem with the phone either so I didn't go over to the threads you posted. I have the sd card that came with the phone and the 32 as well as a 16 for the T959. Use my computer a lot to transfer files and have multiple directories to keep it all separate. No problem there.
If I hadn't bought it after the T959 I am sure I would be keeping it as you are. The amount of development here on XDA is great and I didn't realize that the 2nd memory card (the internal on the T959) that is used like a 2nd sd card but at the same time like the internal memory on all the other phones was removed on the SGS4G. Became spoiled with that as well as the builds on the T959 for themes, mods, roms, etc. Don't mean to insult anyone so please don't take it that way.
You've answered all my questions, thank you and I will contact the correct person letting them know question answered, posted in wrong forum (and multiple times, won't forget that) so this thread can be removed or however they handle the errors (or maybe I'm the first).

The threads I posted were actually quotes from posts that you had posted on other forums indicating you had issues, but not in the SGS4G forums, in the vibrant forums.
Glad you have no issues with it. No harm done, just to avoid this always check which forum your posting in and try to avoid cross posting.

T-Mobile customer service and I called the store, but I have been so side tracked I didn't even there. Tomorrow is my 20th day technically and just noticed I had a lock screen on it the phone I need to get off so maybe I'll just keep this too and try and make some changes to it to make it fun.
Customer service has been wrong before, but I have always worked things out with them. Been with them since 2000 and am down to 5 lines from 7 and a data line so they have been pretty good but then again I guess policy is policy. Then again I do know that customer service (return by mail) was up to 30 days and the store was way shorter. I am surprised it was 20.

You want?
....Any custom rom will purty much have this. One that doesn't isn't worth downloading or is unsupported....
Don't do a search on the forums for Radio's and RILs or Installing Roms or anything else cause you would have to read and stuff. Sorry this is so long, I'm sure its putting you out.
Since u don't like searching, I think I can spare some time and help u out... $75/hour would be my charge. Let me know, and we can get started
That long body of text was more like only one question.....ughh. BOT, once your phone is rooted with a custom rom, there is no need for any ATT update. Like Diablo said, you are really lazy to use the search because there are several roms in the android development that are 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 (gingerbread). Also check the sticky thread mudknot created, it shall help you out young one.

Please do a search before opening a new thread.
Also you will find that many are willing to Help those that are willing to at least try and help themselfs first before just asking for a hand holding walk through.
All the info you want is in the forums. If you don't have the time to learn about what you are doing then maybe you shouldn't be doing it. I am not being rude so please don't take it that way. Imagine I walked you through it and didn't explain anything and then you have an issue, know where to look for a fix, post a new thread again asking for help? What you are doing could leave you with a non replacable brick. Flashing roms on your phone while fun, can be dangerous. So please take the time to learn about what your doing BEFORE you do it, or I see another "help I bricked my phone" thread in your future.

Which Rom?

This is my first post and, I am truly sorry if I did not see anything already in General about a Rom Selection.
My first root is going to be a EVO 3D. I have found your page on doing so and it was very useful. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192245)
I just need suggestions on what ROM to take on. I saw that the biggest are the mikG and Viper rom. If my understanding is correct you can get better battery life with Viper? Thats what I am aiming for.
Also once flashed could I go back to the original stock rom, lets say if sprint found out? or my phone broke and I needed to get a new one? I am sure some sort of warranty is not valid.
Also would Windows be the best option to root with or could I just use my iMac?
I greatly appreciate your time and if I am overstepping my bounds then I would be glad if you could point me in the right direction.
Thanks much.
Culljosh
This may be better suited for the evo3d section in q and a or general.
However, I could highly recommend both roms though i am not a e3d user. Once you are rooted make a back up. There are RUU'S which will take you back to stock if necessary though it is no longer sprints policy to take action on rooted phones.
I honestly don't keep backups unless I am going to flash something new and had a flawless setup prior. Just have fun and keep a backup of what is working, as in backup as soon as you root. Get titanium backup also, for your apps.
You will most likely flash a lot of roms initially until you find one you love. Or your dev updates every few days. Have fun!
On the platform, I am not familiar with the new exploit but I am sure they support both Mac and pc
P.S give Viperrom a go for me, I am jealous he is over there and I am here... though he left behind a great mod for us evo users.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but all of the info is easily found in the development section on how to root and install custom roms. For somebody to make a tutorial on the whole process would take more time than you just reading up a bit. Also, things are constantly changing with how things are done in the process, so making a complete tutorial is basically useless in the long run, that's why there aren't any. Also, it's much better for you if you read up on each step of the process, because then you actually know what you're doing, not just blindly following something.
To actually help you out though, look for the "odin back to stock with root and modded 3e" thread, following those directions will get you rooted. After that, follow the instructions in the op of any rom thread, and it will tell you how to install that specific rom.

Pretty much to figure out what's out there, take the time to read through the dev section. But do NOT post there unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure what you are posting is of use to a developer (e.g. a bug report with complete dmesg or logcat as appropriate, or answering a specific data request from a developer.) People who post stupid questions in the Dev forums tend to get torn a new one. Random questions are far more forgivable here in Q&A.
Seriously - just take some time to read threads without doing anything with your phone, simply to learn and "get a feel" for how things work.
As to 2.3.5 - Sorry, the only 2.3.5 available is our partial Cyanogenmod port. It has a number of things broken about it, so it is NOT ready for general use, definitely not someone who posts "how do I install 2.3.5" here.
Rogers Gingerbread (the most mature Gingerbread release for our phones at the moment) is 2.3.3. Some of the ROMs ported with Hellraiser are 2.3.4. These are fairly mature, but all have their issues.
For example, if you want HSDPA+ speeds or HDMI output you're going to have to stick with 2.2.x (e.g. Froyo).
Thx guys. Ive tried looking for things to read and even read wiki in rooting, roms, kernels, cwm, etc.. The list goes on... I am getting nothing for a starter (noob) to the scene of Android.
I am pretty leet when it comes to iphone jailbreak community because ive been in that scene since the iphone launched back in 07'. I have an understanding of bootloaders, basebands and things. Oh, and no I didnt use noob jailbreaking tools.

>>>>READ THIS BEFORE FLASHING OR ROOTING<<<<

There are threads popping up everywhere of users who have bricked there devices..here in the past few days. It has gotten ridiculous. anyone who has been in multiple forums on xda can tell you the same thing i am...I have never seen so many bricks on a device.
Is it the device a problem maybe with the skyrocket???? NO
99.9999 percent of the time bricks are caused by user error. Like it or not its true.
On the very rare occasion .. it is an actual rom/kernel problem......its rare because roms are rigorously tested by the developer before posting to the masses...
So Please if your just getting into roting and flashing or not familiar with Samsung phones.......
read the roms thread. see if people are having issues or if u can find posts by others who are running the rom/kernel combo. that your are about to flash.
understand fully without doubts the process. of rooting...custom recoveries. and any kind of flashing. weather it be kernel/rom/modem/themes/mods.......
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH ODIN HAVE IT AVAILABLE AND KNOW HOW USE IT...
HAVE THE STOCK TAR AND STOCK RECOVERY TAR HANDY
under stand what a nandroid backup is and how to backup, and restore them.
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER FLASH A ROM NOT IN THE SKYROCKET DEVELOPMENT SECTION ON YOUR SKYROCKET.
( unless u know the deal with the t989 ) and understand that process fully
READ READ READ READ....THERE ARE guides on everything you could ever want to do to a skyrocket...in the general section......read them ..spare yourself the trouble of destroying a very nice expensive phone.........

Good post.
Also, people who have bricked and make a new thread. We want to help you, but please for the love of god give as much information as possible. The incidents of these 'ghost bricks' where people have said they have done everything correctly is rising, yet the accompanying details are lacking. It is scary thought that our phone can brick itself on a normal flash .001% of the time, but we don't even know if this is true because of a lack of information.
I think this is a nice post in light of the present circumstances that different users (n00bs, if you will) are facing. I have been a big fan of reading multiple times before trying on something and probably that is one thing that have saved me from getting my phone useless. And with such informative guides by developers like Silver we should always read everything for sure...
Thanks a ton Silver for all that you do and I will be trying your Silver ROM as soon as I am done posting this
Thanks for posting this Silver. I don't mind helping people who've run into trouble--I actually like it since I've run into the same problems myself (including a hard brick--my own user error, admittedly...).
If any of the people starting new threads took a minute to search, they would find that their question has been answered a hundred times. But I'll generally cut them some slack and just try to help since when you think you've bricked your phone you tend to be in a total state of panic and don't think to search first.
Thanks for the post. Coming from a Captivate over to a Skyrocket wasn't too bad of a transition, but my Captivate would have been bricked most definitely unless I read 2 or 3 DIFFERENT guides and watched a couple vids on YouTube. Please read and reread and then read some more
i just got into US 4 2 weeks,
and had my skyrocket at the 2nd day in US,
i just rooted it few days ago,
it's easy for me to root it ,
just follow the rules,
don't make any mistakes.
and you can enjoy different kinds of roms
Ordered a new (refurb) skyrocket and am going to root
Hi all.
Very green noob here.
I just ordered my skyrocket from AT&T. They have refurbished going for $19.99 for those looking. I'm coming off from a Samsung Impression. "It's ancient, it's ugly..." for those loving Nightmare before Christmas.....
Anyhow, when I get it I am going to play with it for a day or so and then root it(or attempt to), and put the Cyanogen mod and clockwork mod. Hope I know what I'm talking about.
I've been reading everything for weeks now and am going to re-read again all of the links mentioned by Silver03wrx at the top. Thanks in advance.
Two questions, though.
I want Ice Cream Sandwich on it.
1. Any recommendations which to do first, ie upgrade to ICS and then Root?
and
2. I am going to back up the stock set up first. If I screw up and brick it, can it be restored? I have read that a soft brick can, but I do not recall ever seeing mention of restoring from hard bricking. Maybe I missed it.
Any proactive help is much appreciated.
Thanks
I would do the ICS install and then root
As for bringing... We've lost a lot of good men out there to hard bricks, which is one of the reasons you got a Skyrocket for 20 bucks lol
Soft bricking happens all the time, not too hard to recover from. Hard bricks are very difficult. There's a dude out there who repairs a hard brick $50 or in that range
Just follow instructions and you'll be fine
Non-bricked Skyrocket since 2-11-2012
Thanks for the guidance Shootoo.
Thanks
Thanks for the tip! Big help!
Def READ UP ON ODIN
I made the mistake of thinking Odin was like superoneclick, it either works or doesn't, IT IS NOT. You can seriously mess up your device if your not careful. I would know, Cause I bricked the Epic 4G Touch, Luckily by the time I got to the skyrocket, I had personal Experience. LOL
Thanks for the info.
Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I'm experimenting with rooting my girlfriend's Skyrocket and if I can avoid bricking her phone, well that would be great
Thanks for the great post
Hi, I've been hanging around XDA for a few years now, and this is one of the most complete posts for rooting a device I have seen. I have a Galaxy S Fascinate with VzW, and had a big learning curve on it.
I recently finished rooting/modding it to run CM9 ICS 4.0.4 and am looking to take advantage of the dual core processor for better performance than my 1st Gen Fascinate.
Thanks for all the great work!

Very important to read and read and read again...
I've bricked my phone but I knew that this could happen before attempting it and had read enough prior to trying out a rom. I had a backup plan just in case from all the great posts here.
When my SR bricked, I didn't panick... much. . I just spent another few minutes with the leaked ICS and everything was working again.
Bricked... No wait...
I thought I bricked my phone. Started checking everything and after discovering the one of my USB ports won't support my phone correctly, I was able to restore my phone with ODIN.
One thing I did notice once I recovered is that when using that port, ADB would error and time out. I though it was a driver, then cable issue, but it was the port.
In the future to test my phone and make sure it is fully accessible, I'm going to run ADB and drop into shell mode to make sure my cable and port are working.
OP: Can you please add following instruction in bold red
Check your device before flashing. FLASH AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727 ROMS ONLY
I have read 2-3 threads with folks bricking their SGS2 skyrocket by flashing other roms.

He does in point 6.
6. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER FLASH A ROM NOT IN THE SKYROCKET DEVELOPMENT SECTION ON YOUR SKYROCKET.

What the op should add is the fact that leaked ICS kernel's can hard brick a phone. A shame considering almost every rom released in the last few months is based on the leak. You can read more about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644364

Actually most are safe because we use GB recoveries. I think only CM9 based ROM using non GB recoveries are at risk.

Read up and Fear Not: The true bueaty of Android!
I am realatively new to Android, especially when it comes to development and customization, but I have much experience with hardward tinkering and hacking over the years. That said, since I got my SkyRocket I am HOOKED! I have managed to flash my S2S through six or so different ROMs, starting from GB stock to Cyanogen then to the ICS. Just 2 days ago my PC glitched while flashing through ODIN and my phone turned to stone. ODIN wouldn't see it, ClockworkMod was gone, all my data/backups...EVERYTHING. I thought it was over. However, with persistence, the forums and some gumption, I was able to bring it back from the brink! As long as you take your time and keep at it, everything you need to be a pro (or at least feel like one with your own devices) is here somewhere and no device should have to suffer the boring stock life again!!! Thanks to all the devs and moderators for keeping us dabbling, Great Post Silver!
