[q] help from me on xda or in pm/gtalk ? - HTC Desire S

I help A LOT of people here on xda all day everyday some donate some don't. its very hard to help people on xda cus when helping them other people jump in and start either telling the person im helping don't do that do this or they just plain old spam. i have helped a very large amount of people on g talk and they have told me they like to be helped MORE on g talk than on xda because we have 100% full privacy to do what we need to do. please choose how you like to be helped Either xda or PM or g talk. at the end of the week ill count all of them up and from the results i will help people based on the results on this thanks very much.

To put the poll into better context I believe that you should also read this thread Although I've quoted the relevant posts below:

Hello, Paul,
Firstly, thanks (again) for your input into the forum. I'm genuinely not intending to create conflict here or trying to play the role of a mod. Now, I know that you've had this sort of comment before, but, I agreed with it then and I'm afraid that I still do.
While at times the PM route can be useful to resolve issues, it shouldn't be the only or primary option. The whole principle of XDA is openness and sharing, so resolving an issue in thread permits that the next user(s) (and there is always another, who suffers from the exact same problem) from hopefully using the Search function and then following the resolution from the thread by themselves.
That way we're working towards creating a valuable resource rather than loosing useful input into hidden PMs.
PM's do have there place for 'user to user' communication, that would otherwise populate the forum unnecessarily but once a thread has been created I believe that it should be used to reolve the original issue.
If a new user needs that much hand holding then one wonders whether they should be risking their £200-£400 device in the first place! before reading up some more....

me helping people over PM is better because its faster and more safer for the person im helping. if im trying to guide him then other people jump in and comment he isnt going to know who to listen to and he will get very confused. this has happend before. by helping over PM or my gmail is better for them, and me. and i ALWAYS ask them after to write a guide as to how i helped them and what they did. i at NO point mean to upset anyone. but you have got to understand that this is the only way that i can help these people as you may well know here on xda people have got there opinions and they like to jump in whenever they want. if i tell him to do somthing some1 might jump in and say no or do this and do that. i have had EVERYONE i have helped say thanks to me and its better this way. i have helped MANY people achieve proper s-off. i will no open a poll. and it will ask the people of xda if they would prefer to be helped via PM or Gtalk or on here. if more people prefer xda then i will start helping via xda

As someone whom Paul has helped through gtalk, It was very beneficial to me as we were able to quickly and easily communicate, as any other method is rather slow and crude. I definitely do agree with your point on xda being a repository for information however, therefore communicating through gtalk or similar could withhold information from other users. However I have now written up a short guide of what I did to solve my problem on the original thread, and I believe that if people do this then everyone wins tbh, and it has the added advantage of the treads being shorter and more concise, therefore it is easier to find the relevant information.

As someone who has done all his stiff by reading through threads and others opinions, I will always advocate all discussions on XDA
Sent from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3. WAKE UP HTC!!!!

On the 16th the poll will close and whatever the winning method is thats the way i will help people from now on. i do wish ALL people will take something out of the way i help them. as me getting them properly s-off uses alot of things like commands running adb , fastboot and so on. by helping them do these things it then in turn helps them. as if i didnt help them and they needed to to adb or fastboot commands and they never knew howto that could result in a not needed thread being opened **How to use adb or fastboot** this is a good way for me to help these people. i think people should help people the way they do and let other people carry on with the ways they do things. ( no offence meant ben your opinion means alot to me your a good person ) but if it states in the rules ( only help people on xda ) then i will stop if it dont then i will carry on as im not doing anything wrong. and even so if you guys think your losing out on infomation. i will open up a guide covering absolutly EVERYTHING on the desire s from fastboot adb changing roms, splash, radio, hboot and covering everything on what the desire s is capable of doing. what limits it has and other things. this in a sense will be the desire s XDA user guide let me know if u think thats a good isea ben. and as i go along anything i help people out with thats not in the new guide ill just update it ????????????

I do but there are already several threads like this, so one must be careful not to pollute the forum with too many similar guides which would just lead to further confusion.

There is the Complete Tutorial for beginners and others, but I'm guessing yours would be a more technical and slightly more advanced version?

The one thing I would say though, is rather than re-invent not just the wheel but the car, I'd recommend that you source, link and reference as much of the existing documentation where ever possible.

Guides done i have posted it now and ill carry it on as i go along

hey guys, Would just like to add to this After searching throughout the forum day and night i got what information i needed to root and s-off my desire s. After following all the instructions letter by letter i was still have errors and problem after problem. paul.robo kindly asked me if i wanted his help and i accepted using Gtalk. I can not begin to express at how helpful he was and was there to guide me through each error. After a good few steps i finally got to where i wanted to be. In no way was i able to find out why i was having these errors if he weren't there to check them as it was happening. To go through this in forum style replys would take days and to much work. Gtalk is a brilliant and direct help for occasions like these and would recommend his help and wisdom to all. Thanks again mate Much appreciated

Disappointed in the rudeness I am reading :(

Hey guys I was meandering through the forum reading up on the root progress, and I read about a member's idea and work on an automated root, I just want to say that from a dedicated member to the inc forum I am disappointed in the flaming and garbage that all you "experienced" devs are throwing at the people who haven't used adb before... Come on guys if you can't be kind why say something, you know? They won't learn if somebody is discouraging them from even trying... So just a thought, be kind because discouragement is not what these forums are about guys.
Peace to all you silly android fans out there and happy rooting!
People will make those sort of comments unfortunately.
And people will make these sort of posts about it.
Just another day on almost every community forums.

Just saying man, coming from the inc forum where we actually help eachother... Its no way to talk to somebody who could actually turn into a decent dev, its happened tons of times
It has nothing to do with being rude or polite... The root process is very crude at the moment, recovery is not fully functional and You really can't back up if you fubar your phone... There is a very strong possibility of making a paper weight with the current method ... Just be patient I hear unrEVOked is working on root which won't come out until a solid recovery is running

Here is a link for anyone needing adb help. i made a post in a thread with links to help users learn adb and understand it. i understand the being new and needing help. the link in the post are the links i used to learn adb and everything with it.
Will go directly to my post with links:

I agree with the OP...it was just the attitude of some of them that was the issue. Very rude and condescending. I do agree that right now it's a crude root method and that without a solid working recovery it's not advisable for anyone but the experienced. BUT that is no reason to denigrate those that want a one click solution down the line when things are solid.
When the Inc first was rooted, I remember the same types of posts about not knowing adb = shouldn't root.
It's just part of the territory. Also it leads to the same hand-holding through the process 50x a day.
It'll pass, just like it did with the Inc

The above post is correct. Don't let anyone discourage you. We were all new to this at one point, and I don't think there is a single one of us that did not get an impolite comment directed towards a valid question at some point during the learning process.
Sent from my Thunderbolt using Tapatalk
People are just rude in general. If you say something someone doesn't agree with, they make damn sure you know they disapprove. I took my leave from the INC forums after the iPhone 4 debacle that happened in the general forum. That and someone told me my ROM list was stupid and worthless in a PM...
I concur, I can ADB like I'm typing a paper (I have extensive command line experience) but my gf, who bought her first android phone recently, can hardly turn a computer on.
Long story short, some people don't want to risk breaking their brand spanking new phone just to have more functionality. If an easy, tried and true method presents itself, people will not only flock to it, but they will gladly give money for it (I know I would). Calling someone a noob or making fun of them is counter-productive and will deter all future forward progress here. No one wants to dev for a bunch of ingrates and jerks.
+1 to the OP.

I would, respectfully, disagree w/that statement.
IMHO what happens is people get tired of listening to the same questions over and over and over - this is why we have a search button and why google kicks ass too. I think people get snippy after seeing the 8 millionth person come in and ask "what's root" or "what's a ROM".
I'm not sure of the rudeness the OP was mentioning as I haven't seen it in regards to NOOB developers, but from my own personal experience around here I've found this place to be very helpful. I learned all I could about rooting my Eris via google and on another one of the android forums, ultimately a google search landed me here and I took the plunge and rooted and started w/the Kaos ROMS before trying many, many others.
People shouldn't just come in and start asking Q's - they should look around first and when they don't, that's why trouble starts (not here, on ANY forum).
As far as the OP here goes, I haven't read the posts he was talking about, but I can understand why -if somebody was looking for legitimate "how to" info on development and that person was met w/a bunch of crap - they would be frustrated.
I love it here

We also have a chicken and a kraken (sp??) ....
As one of the newer users here, I understand where both sides are coming from. The amount of content here is kind of intimidating for some people, and those who are looking for a "do everything" solution such as one-click root are going to be dissappointed. And then some people are so impatient to root that they'll be pestering people, asking any question that helps them out immediately, not checking for already posted questions, and that's the hand-holding that is being criticized/attacked here.
But I do see where they are coming from. There is a lot of information here that is important, but with the volume of posts, it gets lost, and there seems to be no direct go-to thread or threads for people to ask questions like that in this forum. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to read all the threads here, nor will many set foot in the general Android forums here I think, so they don't know where to start, and many will ask their own questions in their own thread(s).
If anything, some of the most important information that needs to be more accessible IMO is the links to the driver/tweaking the driver for the device to be picked up with adb.

We all have our moments. I tend to answer the questions first, then include something like if you have to ask this, you're probably not ready to do it on your own yet, or here's your answer, but a simple search would have revealed it.
Google and search are our friends. Most of the "old timers" just get annoyed when people ask something that could have easily been found with either a Google search (set site to xda if only interested in xda responses) or with a forum search (search from main area that covers all subsections, use "show posts" and skim through the results), because the same question has been/asked answered dozens of times already.
All that said, the sub-forum structure across devices is inconsistent, the protocols of where to ask/post isn't consistent, and the search feature in xda absolutely SUCKS. I've always considered myself a pretty good query builder to find what I want quickly, but even I have to run through multiple searches to find what I'm looking for. The 30 second delay between being able to start a new query can be very frustrating, if xda dropped that to 10 seconds or so, it would probably encourage more multiple searches before asking. It's no wonder newer members get frustrated, though many are just too lazy or desperate to take the time to look...

I just want to say that until last night I HAD no idea how to use adb. One of those devs that you are complaining is so rude, got me the help I needed, to the point that they were on RDP with me and handheld me thru it, even straight did some sections.
In ither words I'm finding nothing but help from the dev community.

I never said they aren't helping, I'm saying that rudeness is not what forum communities need to be based on, its not right that people have to have attitude online, nor in general, people come to forums for help and communication they don't want to get on a thread and see that somebody has posted a reply being rude to their work and or statement, its just something I'd like to see change but it never will

You have to have a pretty-much rock-stock ROM for this update to work. You could just install attn1's version of the stock ROM with this update already applied, then properly rooted and packaged for installation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
After installing, the update screen will show that you are up to date.

That is how flash attn1 rom. I think you might have misunderstood. He meant that you could go back to stock stock and apply it. Because if your rooted it will fail to install OR. Apply attn1 rom.

i really dont get why it bothers some people so much, they respond to threads saying use the search button, people ask it alot. U dont have to respond to the post to begin with, alot of people do though, and with the same effort used to say use the search button, u could have just as easily answered the question.
Best part is if u dont want to answer it because you think they were to lazy to search it gets buried pretty quick.

its probably because to newer users, its a little intimidating to go thru many posts and threads, and they also know some info could be outdated. Maybe on the site, there should be an official, updated "how to" glossary or wiki.

Because the question was already answered for one thing.
It's also forum rules, and I've seen it mentioned by Mods a million times.
Community moderation...I let people know in the hopes of breaking a habit before it starts: posting a new thread for every single question that crosses their mind, and, eventually, expect to be given answers to everything, getting even more reluctant to do the "work" of finding answers and learning about their phones on their own.
Next thing you know, we're up to our necks in duplicate posts. Then, NOBODY will want to answer ANYTHING, because they have to wade through 4 tons of duplicate crap, and it ain't worth it.
How hard is it to Google "inspire OTA update root" ?

As to the last question: speaking for myself, I am tempted to just ask question, not because I can't effin search, but some of my questions, one has to weed through all manner of material on multiple threads, some pertinent, some not, since February to ascertain "the" answer. This is all well and good and maybe an exercise in disciple, like back in school or something, but maybe some of us just get impatient in an effort to save time. That said, I am fully on board with the forum rules, because da rules are da rules, and this is where one has to come for this sort of stuff :-D.

Oh I agree. Everyone has questions, and everyone has opinions. There are often times wrong/incomplete answers to things, and both yes and no to the same question.
It's not necessarily easy to parse through and distill all of this stuff. But it can be done. I often times run across answers that go both ways, and that can be unsettling, especially if it involves potentially bricking a device if you get it wrong.
It's just a question of analysis, and I concede some people are more comfortable doing it than others. I guess I never expected to be handed all of the answers to basic questions.
I've always preferred searching over posting in asking a question, as it usually always provides the answer *quicker* than waiting for someone to post back an answer to the question.
Not to mention, if it turns out it was a much easier answer to find than first apparent, or that it was one's own oversight responsible for a problem that motivated the question, one can bypass getting antagonized by jerks like me.

Yes this. Exactly. 10 words.
Scott, why must you pretend to be GOD in these forums which you clearly aren't....if the guy wants to ask, let him ask...the search feature in this forum sucks anyways, so i would of done the same exact thing. don't like reading something that is redundant, then go grab the book War and Peace and entertain yourself. I am sure that by the time you are done with it, all items here would be OUTDATED and you will have no choice but to ask questions yourself, which is where i would answer you back with this:

I'm not pretending anything. Searching before posting is forum rules, often cited by mods. I happen to feel it's important enough to remind people, and I'm not the only one. It's called community moderation.
No, a lot of stuff does NOT get outdated. Some do, like radio flashing and not needing eng s-off, but others don't, or haven't yet and don't look like they're going to.
For example, rooting remains the same basic process as when it started. One of two methods are available, and likely there won't be any new ground-breaking discoveries, at least for a while. Maybe it will change in the future, but it hasn't yet.
Another example... Until someone makes ATT want to push their otas to rooted devices, the process by which to update one's rooted phone with those OTA updates will remain the same. Etc....
And Google works just fine, better than the built-in search function of many sites.
Saying "I can't search because search sux" is a cop-out, plain and simple.

Umm, no. At least not on the full site. If you look right above the forum frames (up, up a little more, no down, yeah, there, on the right) you'll see the search you should be using. It searches recursively from wherever you are. Forum home? Searches the whole board. Inspire home? Searches the whole Inspire board. Inspire Dev? Yep, just the dev section. It goes clear down to searching within a thread. Hardly sucky.
I have been rooted for about a month now and have flashed several custom roms but am now back at the stock rooted rom desiring the latest at&t ota update. I read earlier in this thread that because I'm already rooted the update won't install. My question is can I just flash the attn1 rom even though I rooted my device using bubby's root method?

It should work fine. All attn1's ROM needs is s-off. Bubby's give you that.
I'm not positive but I think att1 updated rooted stock rom w/sideloading is in the form of pd98img.zip file which u need to put on on your SD card but not in a folder. Then turn off fastboot in settings, power off your phone, then while holding down the vol down button push your power button. The phone should boot into hboot where it will search for the pd98img for a few seconds then ask you to update. Once it's done you can reboot & delete the file off your SD card cause it's around 300 or so mb. Once your all done with that you also might want to get the matching ril file for the new radio that's in the update which you can flash in cwr.

Its a couple extra steps, and doesn't really take much longer than flashing a rooted rom file. Plus flashing the patched HBoot is safer, and for how "easy" this is.. I wouldn't expect any dev to take the time and make just a "rooted" version of the rom to flash.
Odd. I don't see anything in the forum rules that say people should ask for help. I don't blame the guy for asking. Why not? What's next--create your own ROM, why should others do it? Figure out your own root method instead of asking someone if they have?
For all the people who give the guy grief about asking, maybe someone else will say, "yeah, that's a good idea" and help the guy (and others) out.
Joel
I think it's more that this person is asking in multiple places for a few hours. Coulda had it done by now. Just rubs some people the wrong way.
Wow guys, well I think I can officially say XDA is no longer the same site I thought it was....
FYI, I had already done the posted method no problem. The only reason I made this thread was in an effort to request if a developer (of which I am not) could create a simple ROM that would help other newbies out and make it an easy one-flash task so they don't have to worry. But no, I guess it's a sin to be a newbie now huh? How dare anyone request something so simple from a developer (especially when a well known dev already spent more work creating another version of the same ROM). So this should be even harder for them to do right? And honestly, why anyone sees this thread as a forceful obligation for someone to fulfill the request is beyond me.
Very productive and helpful posts everyone. Great job at showing how supportive XDA has become...
You do realize pulling the rom.zip from an RUU takes about 2 minutes to accomplish, including the time it takes to google the "how-to". But you would rather bother a dev to do it for you, adding the trouble of having to wait the 20+ minutes to upload the 350MB file to waste precious personal server space for a single person's downloading convenience. A 2 minute job turned 30 minutes of someone else's time cus you didn't feel like it. The difference between a good noob and a bad noob: good noob asks how to get roms from RUUs, bad noob tells someone else to do it for them without hesitation.

Oh please, you are defending yourself ex post facto because you were attacked for being shown that if it matters that much to help the new commers you could make what you wanted pretty quickly by following a how-to. If you really want to help them, you could have probably finished the how-to and posted it in the time you took to complain.
It's great to do things for anyone new and I am all for it (which is why in the few months I have been an official member, I have 60+ "thanks," most of which came from answering questions or giving out useful information.
No one is attacking you for wanting to help noobs, but people will call you out when you claim to want to help and are shown, but ignore it anyways. It comes back to the quote:

If all someone said was to google it or do this yourself without telling you how it could be done with links or something then that would be messed up, but they did not. They gave you links in both this thread and the other (the other thread giving you EXACTLY what you requested in a link).
IMHO if you really want to help those you say you want to help, you could create a post in the developer's forum linking to the post that someone gave you in the other topic from rootzwiki. That way they can be pointed in the right direction.

Stickies and guides

I sent a pm to one of our mods asking if we can get the sticky threads cleaned up. By this I mean unsticky some of the ones that are outdated and no longer maintained by current users of this device.
Im basing this on my own ideas and this post by FB.

Solrac, it might be better if you would concentrate your efforts on updating our wiki since some information has already been repeated a few times, particularly the roms list. If you wind up putting them in the wiki then other users can edit it once you decide to not update this thread. I've seen it happen to at least two other threads already which is why team acid have moved some of our instructions to the wiki.

We have so much stuff stickied in the general sub that is out of date. In the development sub there is a couple threads that are no longer maintained.
My question is do you agree we need some of these threads removed from the list of stickies? Ill have a poll please select agree or disagree. If you want to post a response please do, but lets keep this civil aight?
Eollie, I agree that the stickies are cluttered. We don't even use a lot of them anymore.
I still say that we should move toward using only the wiki for guides to avoid this in the future since we've had a lot of the op's for the stickies leave and then we have oudated stickied threads. With the wiki it doesn't matter who leaves, everyone can still edit the guide and keep it up to date.

I did it all through odin...I just think the options should be more that just one... But please understand im not trying to make waves, other than that issue I think it great and very informative...

I have thought about making a update guide like the bible thread but every time I start I have never finished. Im not fond of the wiki for some of the reasons twisted spoke about, however it can be useful.
Is there a person that is notified when edits are made? So we can make sure the proper info is put on it? Ive never paid enough attention to that aspect.
There's a history option in the wiki that lets you view the latest edits, and see what exactly go changed. (It's up top in the navigation)
The thing is that the lack of information can be addressed by adding it. Twisted said there were no Odin guides, well we can add them. There's no real reason why we shouldn't be using it. I know everyone wants to start their thread with their guide on how to do things their way, but there has to be an accepted method of doing things. I've written up a few of the guides on the Wiki but then someone else comes along and improves it with a better method that is more up to date. That's how it should be, you don't have to go to MY thread to try and edit it or try to get me to update it. You can just go in and do it yourself.

You're completely missing the point.
Let me make it easier.
If info is not in wiki, put info in wiki.
I agree about the cleanup but Who is to stop the trolls from updating the wiki with bad info I mean someone could of been offended by another user and think I will change the wiki and put harmful material or instructions just to mess up People phones. There should be Some checks and balance of the info that has been updated

No one can stop another user/troll from putting bad, offensive, or just plan misinformation out there. The maintenance of the wiki is a community effort. Thus we are all responsible for updating it and cleaning it up.
I do like the idea of checks and balances, though. What we need for that effort are maintainers. On top of the community making updates we could have a few people that collaborate to help keep the wiki clean, up to date, etc. The trick would be getting volunteers for Team Wiki (wicked? Wikid! lol) that can put the time and effort into the moderation of the wiki.
Just my 2ȼ.
Nvm, just checked the wiki and it has either been updated or i was blind before, cuz everything i used is in the wiki...
. I'm glad you see that. If someone updates it and starts screwing with the wiki a moderator can always step in. It's basically like the forums, we can't stop you from posting, but once you've posted something that you shouldn't have, we can remove it. We can do the same on the wiki, it keeps track of the edit history, we can always revert to a good version.
Check out this nice list of ROMs available for our phone. It's the most up to date one (thanks to solrac who just updated the list of custom mtd roms portion)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/List_of_ROMs
Thanks FB that was what I was wanting to know. I have the same reservations as anonymous and Stephen. Ive seen wikipedia edited and things slipped until somebody caught it.
Ive spoke with TRusselo and if we can come up with a list of the threads that need to be cleaned and unstuck he is willing to look into is. However since he doesnt own the phone he did not want to jump in unstickying threads willy nilly. I had planned on posting earlier today but I spent a good part of my day fixing bicycles so I can take my kiddo bike riding.
Ill be out most of tomorrow but Ill try to post my list sometime and if any of you want to also suggest it would be great. My thinking is we can always link to the threads via the wiki and maybe create a new version of the bible thread and the FAQ thread Mr. Clown created.
If you want to make suggestions please list which sub the thread is in and the thread name no need to link it. The final list will have links when I submit it to TRusselo.
Well I can say once this idea is completed it will be a lot more user friendly...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305560
All of the above is open for suggestions or even tell me certain threads need to stay as stickies. Im just looking to trim the sticky list down.
I was also thinking each sub could have a thread that has links to the wiki for things. That way even if the person that creates it leaves and never comes back the wiki links will be the same. Then the threads can be linked on the wiki and if a thread is out dated it can be removed from the wiki.
Looks like good suggestions so far.
As far as recreating the bible thread, we can easily do that in the wiki. The roms portion is pretty much set except for roms that haven't been released yet.
The dev stickies are definitely the ones we should get rid of. right now we have 6 stickied threads. They take up a lot of room before getting to the latest content from dev threads.
I agree with creating a bible in the wiki, I was suggesting linking to it in a sticky. I tend to have a hard time expressing my thoughts in few words. I mean you have read some of my posts .
Anybody have any objections to the lists I have above?

What if he asked for an official release date rather than a port? Why go @ him like that without any further information?
I don't know about other people, but I personally appreciate your work and you taking your time to help with the porting process, because I'm really eager to try the new features, but if you're going to go at everyone seeking some knowledge, I just don't think it's the place... Stop making us feel guilty or think twice before asking any questions.
That's definitely not the meaning of the word 'community'.
Plus, the sensation forum itself is not that 'live' lately, so such threads/questions kinda spice things up a lil' bit.
Anyways, If it's that irritating and 'annoying', why not write down all the information currently known about the process and clearing up some stuff for people who have no idea? Wouldn't that just be easier to keep track of the progress AND avoid less people having to ask? I wouldn't even mind doing it myself, but as you can see, this is the only post allowed on the subject.
Would you please explain me why it's that so... un-motivating? annoying? irritating?
People asking such questions will be everywhere, anywhere, anytime, and no one can change that. I don't have a problem with such people, because sometimes they're the reason I'm able to get my questions answered.
Also, the forum won't be as it is right now, without people asking and expressing excitement over new versions/updates.
It will most likely become a dev-only forum, which won't be much fun, will it? I mean, won't you just port stuff for other devs that can do it themselves? Meh...
Anyways, I'm sure he didn't mean to intentionally affect you or anyones else progress. So some sympathy and patience with people. Not all people know what you do, and that's totally legitimate.
------
OP/Mod, If you're going to allow only one thread about the subject at least fill it with some information.
Since people are not allowed to ask elsewhere, this should be the ideal place for them to get informed about the porting process and the new update.
You can't forbid people to ask (really basic) certain questions, yet not fill them with information. People come here, first and foremost for information, not to be impressed by the esthetics of the forum.
You may want to merge all of the information and links out there in one post, for both devs and users.
As I said before, I wouldn't mind doing it myself, but I can't... apparently... Just sayin'
P.S, Nothing personal, just expressing my feelings, so no offence

@biasaf as a general rule most people working on ports and other complex stuff dont like feeling pressured to release or fix. After all we all have personal lives and we do this for a hobby, a hobby should be something you do for fun, not because you feel pressured to do so. Also because of the nature of what porters are trying to do, giving ETA is not good because we dont know ourselves and it just adds more pressure. if the dude was asking for ETA of official release, well tbh that is a pretty stupid thing to ask because htc dont generally give eta either - with exception to ics expected rollout timetable.
If you follow the thread in the dev section you will already know that one guy has a rom which gets past splash screen and just loops on logcat errors after that. In any case if you watch the dev thread you will know the latest progress.
the point I really want to stress though is twofold, 1) we do this for free, 2) we do this in our free time as a hobby so please the least people can do is be patient, when its done its done, until then its not done and hassling any devs working on it just annoys people
Jonny,
I get where this is coming from, and yes I do follow the other threads.
I'm pretty informed though it's just normal for people to get curious.
I think what you're saying is right and a dev, as a contributor, should receive his respect and his ideal work environment and conditions. (does that make sense?)
I don't see how this might be pressuring, because as you said, you do it as a hubby and you don't really have to do it for anyone, yet you're still doing it for whatever reason you have.
On the other hand, that's exactly why people asking for ETAs shouldn't be a bother. When it's done, it's done. Just my 2 cents...
Anyways, I'm really not in the place to judge anyone, especially not a dev (since I haven't been in that position really), so sorry for my previous comments.
P.S., I know it's not the right place to ask, but it's summer and I have LOADS and LOADS of free time, so I thought I'd help myself and try to learn some android programming (and maybe help the community... somewhen). There are a few different views on how to go about it. I reckon its todo with the sort of person you are, eg. if you are the type of person that throws yourself at something and gets stuck in straight away you would be most comfortable going straight in an learning basic java and C++
On the other hand if you like to ease yourself into things it would be better to get to grips with a really easy programming langauge with syntax not too dissimilar to more complex langauges. I was lucky and got into mobile modding at 14 with flash actionscript themes for older samsung phones (tocco lite, monte, corby etc) which is a really easy way to start because you can run the themes on pc and test what changes to code do without running them on the phone using flash player and the code is really easy to understand and can gently ease your way into the coding world.
For internet resources, there are a lot of flash actionscript tutorials on the DarkforestGroup sites (DFG StarMods in particular as that is completly dedicated to flash ui based phones) and also there are lots of Java and C++ tutorials online for free but if you want to be sure they are tried and tested then probably the best way would be to buy a book of amazon or somthing like that.
One warning is that it does take a lot of time and you have to be prepared to read lots whichever way you choose! Good luck!
---------- Post added at 12:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:01 AM ----------
The last post was geared mainly towards app/kernel/AOSP/CM/AOKP development but if you want to be a ROM developer you firstly need some sort of kitchen like dsixda's kitchen and cygwin to enable the kitchen to work under windows. the kitchen will let you carry out basic tasks then I would recommend getting a comarison software like beyond compare or similar and compare your ROM with others then see if you can build on those improvements like perhaps editing values in init.d scripts or maybe some smali hacking to enable hidden features/create new features. Or if your good with photoshop or similar you could change the way icons look and create a whole new unique look to the ROM like steve0007 elegancia ROM. then you can add stuff like beats mods, speed tweaks, xloud, bravia, options to debloat and remove some btc junk from the ROM to create an entirely customized ROM.
Anyway this is all massively off topic and its late and Ive got some attemps at porting to do before I go to sleep

Jonny,
I get where this is coming from, and yes I do follow the other threads.
P.S., I know it's not the right place to ask, but it's summer and I have LOADS and LOADS of free time, so I thought I'd help myself and try to learn some android programming (and maybe help the community... somewhen). Do you know any good place to start? Do I need to learn any specific programming language?
I know there are loads of sources on Google, but I don't know what's trusted and what's not...
Thank you!

Think i might join you been dying to give back to the community and now i have the time to do that
To bring this back on topic, has anyone else noticed that the OOM groupings are suddenly back in the ramdisk (init.rc to be precise)? Seems strange for google to u-turn on this when they moved the OOM groupings to services.jar for ICS (though if they're anything like the UK government....)
