I haven't seen a thread about this yet, so I figured I'd make one. Where do you guys prefer your USB ports to be located on your device? I prefer that they're located on the bottom. Tell me what you think.

I prefer them to be on the bottom as well. Both of my previous phones have had them on the bottom, so I guess what I'm just used to.

I feel you. I'll be using my friends Galaxy S, and I'd try plugging it into the bottom, only to realize that it's located on the top. -___-

Why put it anywhere else other than at the bottom, if you buy a dock , hold you device while it's charging, bad design if it's anywhere else

Try telling HTC or Samsung that

Depends, if it's a portrait phone, I like it to be on the bottom. However, if it's more of a landscape phone, I like it to be on the left of the phone. I'm right handed so if I gotta charge it while talking, my palm won't be in an awkward position.
The bottom, but I don't think phone need USB ports, they should just charge through induction
Yeah I still want it to have usb even with induction charge ability.
I have an inspire 4g, the USB is on the bottom next to the 3.5mm Jack. I really wish HTC would have not put the 3.5mm plug on the bottom, it's ridiculous.. the USB is fine on the bottom tho ,helps with docks too if you have one.
I have a Droid incredible 2... leave it up to HTC to have my 3.5 mm on the top and my USB on the left

At the bottom, so you can handle your phone the best while plugged in
At the bottom
I have a Captivate so its on the top, its perfect for when you're charging it on a car cuz you can put it in the cupholder But I prefer it on the side, doesn't bothers when you're gaming and you have to charge your phone.
I have a Milestone and the USB port is on the left side.
It has pros and cons.
On the side is good if I use the phone in landscape while charging but it really sucks when I want to phone.
A phone with only inductive charging would be really bad as I use my phone when it is charging and that would be really hard then.

anyone found a decent dock for the desire ?
I intend to use my G1 dock at least initially, but will have to see how the Desire fits with it. There aren't any currently available on eBay which is odd given they usually have floods of stuff before the actual phones come out.
The Desire has the other kind of micro USB connection to the G1 so not cross compatible

My dock, along with most unofficial ones has the non-HTC micro USB connector.
Obviously, with the desire being somewhat slimmer than its ancestor I am not sure this will work, but if not I shall just use the USB cable till I can get one that does.
Easydevices have four versions on preorder - standard, with second battery slot, with second slot and spare battery and with second slot and extended battery.
great find norm....hope they are available soon!
Please bear in mind that the G1 uses HTC proprietary ExtUSB connector which is based on MiniUSB, not MicroUSB which is the standard, and the one the Desire uses.

seriously looking for a dock for htc desire....
anyone seen any?
i've been looking everywhere.....
please psot here if you found any...
i can't buy it from mobiefun because they don't send to Aus.
@ mrdo
got mine today but from play.com (same kit better price...) very pleased and am typing on my desire while it charges. for some reason it slips a bit with the charger plugged in but then the charger stops it slipping right off. without the charger only thing that's making it slide a bit is having the vibrating keyboard turned on! will probably also get the basic easy devices one too (for overnight charging/alarm duties) if the free delivery offer works.
hope this helps

I take it the nexus one dock wont work on the Desire then? Why would google want seperate dock pins when they could just use the micro usb?!?
http ://www.google .com/support/android/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=167603
Because it is very convenient to just drop the phone in the charging cradle, and it makes it much easier to charge the phone while in a dock.
I totally understand why the Nexus have them, but not why the Desire does not.
yeah i suppose but also seems like quite an overhead in terms of manufacturing + something else to go wrong whether interally or when contacts get dirty vs the millisecond difference between drop or push?
Plus doesn't it negate the ability to sync/have Aux out for music/handfree. Ive also heard its quite loose and people knock the phone on the floor trying to snooze the alarm

Their solution to aux out was to use bluetooth AD2P from the phone to the dock and then aux out on the dock to your stereo system.
I bought one from mopeth mobiles.. http://www.morpethmobiles.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=/A11/_AD_HTC_Desire_USB_Cradle&cat=627
Come this morning with a spare 1200 battery.. I may buy a seidio one next week and give my 1200 to my mate.. but it fits nice and snug perfectly, got a lot of LED indicators and also charges a spare battery!
Could you take a couple of photos? would it fit with a skin?
has anyone purchased this dock?

The port on the phone seems broken. It charges but the cable doesn't stay in as tight and subtle movements causes through cable to come out. I have the usb port door all the way open. Any fixes?

Mine seemed like it needed to wear in, it did the same things as you described but after a while both my BB cable and Samsung cable fit snug.
Not sure what others have experienced.
You sure you're giving it that extra push at the end, and hearing the click of the door locking into place? I've never had the problem of my cable falling out or being held in loosely. In fact, the one time I dropped this phone was when I picked up my laptop and didn't realize the cable was plugged into it. Phone fell to the floor, still attached to the cable.
Make sure you hear that click at the end!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
If you're using the Samsung cable, make sure the door really opened and clicked. It is quite hard on mine to open all the way especially with the hard shell case on.
If you're using 3rd party cable, most of them don't fit. You need to shave off the extra plastics to allow it to fit into the charge port.
My Samsung cable fits really loose now. The little retaining clips on the Samsung USB cable seem to be bent. The Motorola Mini to Micro USB adapter still works great though.
When using OEM Crackberry cable you just need to shave less than 1/8th inch off the side of the connector that faces away from you. (When captivate screen is facing you)

The door is all the way open. I hate not being able to use the phone while it is charging in fear of the cord coming out. I hope its the cable and not the phone.

Hi There!
I am looking for a desktop cradle for my i9000 8GB. I got one from ebay for my hd2, but it's hard to eject, so it seems to me that especially with the USB on the top (Who the hell thought that was a good idea), cradles could be quite hard to come by? I don't really want a cord on the top, but is that my only option?
Also are all higher capacity batteries going to take up more space and make the phone fatter?
I'd be interested in a cradle as well but I don't think there is any other way of charging other than the top USB. Probably a landscape cradle would have to suffice. A larger battery will add more bulk, yes.

Perhaps a wireless charger could be an option for you?
Then you can use it the way you want (landscape or portrait).

Sounds excellent, where do I get them from?
Anyone able to shed any light?
Best option is wireless charger from power force... Still involves you pluggin a cord but you simply place the phone down as you need it..
Got one and its great... All my devices are now able to be charged at the one outlet...

You could make your own like this?
Just wondering if anyone knows the pinout for the 5 contacts on the back so i could make myself a speaker/charger dock until an official one becomes more available.
I've wondered this myself. After running a meter across the pins. Pins 2&4 seem to accept a voltage pin 5 is a ground I think. I feel through a guesstament that it follows the USB pinout in flat lateral form.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Usually I would literally just test each pin to see what was what but obviously being an expensive phone and canceling my insirance I do not want to short anything out, and yes it seems logical for one of the end contacts to be a ground, did you put a voltage into pin 2 & 4? If so how much?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA App
I've been getting read to cut an older USB cable and test that way. But I used 4.4 volts. I to don't want to kill the warranty by ripping the phone apart. After I cut the USB I'm going to make a jig and do tests. If I find anything out I'll post here.

It's the micro USB pinout in pogo form..
1. 5vcc
2. Data -
3. Data +
4. Audio out mono
5. Ground.
Left to right pinout with the camera facing your left shoulder.

Ok. I tested. Connected HTC ONE X to lab power supply (5V 1A limit) and after a while (2-3 seconds) is started charging and 0.44A was flowing into phone. It was almost fully charged at the time.
Does anybody know how to get audio out on audio out pin?
And why Data - pin has 1,8V in reference to ground at all times?
edit:
Ok. I measured again. 0.44A and phone goes to charging (USB). I don't have time today to see what happens if you connect Data + adn - pins...
But still no luck with audio.

hey guys you can check this site out http://techno-fix.com/ . i found my pinout searches there. there are very usefull things
hey guys i just had this thing in mind...many a times my hands get a bit sweaty or its very habitual for me to kinda use the phone wid wet hands..
can the contact with the docking pins cause any issue?
Got mine off amazon. Does not activate dock mode.
Is it defective?

No I think it is the way it was designed. Doesn't use the pins on the back and you have a microusb nub that sticks up for you to connect to.

Well...It doesn't necessarily have to use the pogo pins to activate dock mode. For example the official car dock will launch the Car application when the phone is docked even though it uses usb. It's all in how the connector is pinned out.
Having two of these I can say neither activate dock mode.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Premium HD app
I'm sure you could get an nfc tag, stick it to the dock and have the phone launch the dock mode when it detects the tag. Of course, this solution leaves the phone in dock mode when you undock it and I'm not sure what happens if you just kinda leave the phone sitting on top of the tag like that and try to do other stuff.
If the tag is too low for the phone to detect I'm sure you could jury rig something to raise the tag closer to the center of the phone.
H4x the cable or order one already modded. I just ordered two cables. 1 for car and 1 for night stand.

Install "any cut" from the play store, open it and pick new shortcut. The find HTC Dock mode and select that. Now at least you have a icon on your home screen to get into dock mode even though your dock doesn't automatically trip it.

Does the dock mode turn off the soft key lights? That's my issue right now because using my phone as an alarm clock at night, the dang soft key buttons are way too bright!
