At7t and T-mobile Merge - HTC Sensation

Look what I found in the customers ads that come with my bill, I think T-mobile might be leaks us some infomation before the FCC, or who ever they are aproves this merge!!!!

Sad.

That's not a leak or announcement that the merger (acquisition is more accurate) has been approved, although it likely will. They're just advertising for it to inform customers about it, calm fears, and get you on their side for WHEN it happens. This is standard stuff for acquisitions like this. It's not a secret that T-Mobile is trying to be purchased by AT&T.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Haha I must be one of the few Sensation users on AT&T... I had to buy my Sensation from Canada to get the correct bands xD

Really pricey huh??? Does it work well??

Q: Will I have to upgrade my T-Mobile 3G/4G device after the acquisition closes?
A: T-Mobile has no plans to alter our 3G / 4G network in any way that would make your device obsolete. The deal is expected to close in approximately 12 months. After that, decisions about the network will be AT&T’s to make. That said, the president and CEO of AT&T Mobility was quoted in the Associated Press saying “there’s nothing for [customers] to worry about… [network changes affecting devices] will be done over time… ”
What a ****ty answer.. Pretty much means YEAH you will.. just not right now!

Yes, you will have to switch phones eventually. AT&T will shift T-Mobile users to different 3G frequencies over time so you will need a new phone. But, they say they're going to spread that shift over several years to allow customers to replace phones at the time they normally would. Basically, if you switch phones every 2 years like most people, you won't notice and your phone won't just stop working on you from one day to the next. If you want to hang on to you Sensation 3-4 years from now, you're going to be pissed

Q: How many phones is ATT selling that are prepared to take advantage of T-Mobil's spectrum.
A: It was a retorical question.
Q: What changes are being made to integrate ATT and T-Mobil so that ATT customers can use T-Mobile's spectrum?
A: See the answer to the first question.
Q: How many phones are passing through the FCC with capability to use both ATT and T-Mobil networks.
A: Am I making sense yet?
Q: Will AT&T be making T-Mobil phones obsolete immediately after the merger?
A: Why/how could they?

I suspect there will be a transition rather than an abrupt change; I remember this sort of thing happening before:
First, phones that will support the current networks and the future networks will be made available as an option, and those phones will have a slight premium price but offer assurance that they will work in the future.
Second, those phones that work with both the current and future network will be mandatory for new contracts and contract changes.
Third, the network switchover will happen - probably in stages - and eventually older phones will be poorly supported or not supported at all. This will happen when your shiney new Sensation is an old phone that doesn't run the newest Android OS, with hardware that doesn't support the latest bla bla bla.
When it happened before with tri-mode phones, people cried and wined that their 2-year old POS phone was no longer supported, but they got another phone and moved on and today they wouldn't even dream of using that POS phone; but everyone benefited because networks as a whole were improved.

Sprint possibly to acquire T-MoUS

So I read this article today.
http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2011/03/08/report-sprint-t-mobile-usa-talk-tie/#
I really have no opinion on the matter, but I am curious what that would mean for all of us.
Hmm, very interesting indeed. If this happens, I'd imagine all existing TMO customers would automatically become a customer of the new merged entity. Maybe they'd give the option to opt out of contract early with no fees? Idk...
Yeah that's what I was thinking. It would almost surely alter the contract, in which case they would have to offer customer's to cut the cord, no charge.
Pretty sure that was the case when Sprint acquired Nextel as well.
IIRC contracts and technologies did not change at the time of the 2004 merger. They permitted customers to switch to the other "side" at will, then combined into a single set of plan offerings in 2005. They still offer Nextel iDEN technology with some handset products.
I was once a Sprint CDMA customer, but left them in 2002 or 2003 to go with T-Mobile and GSM, so I didn't live through the merger as a customer myself.
WHAT!
Sprint has a good reputation around here but T-Mobile by far is the better company IMO... A merger between these two companies is weird... Even though i think in the pass this was talked about before...
If this happens Sprint would oviously be the company coming out and T-Mobile just being pushed to the back of the company untill there are few customers left and they would shut it down
How would sprint befite from this? Besides customer merging over... Even thought a fair amount would end their contract then go with sprint
I hate sprint so ugh lol

gurl, yoo sew krayzee.
T-Mobile might be number 4 in terms of number of customers
but Sprint is bringing up the rear when it comes to the 4G
coverage area an number of 4G phones.
I'm not a Sprint fan at all.
I hope it doesn't happen.
So, how does a CDMA company merge with a GSM company and still grow both technologies? My guess is that one has to be dropped eventually. Which one will it be?

Look up what 4g speed actually is defined as. I believe its around 100 mbps. No where near what we can get. It's like 3.5 g

Cdma would be dropped since sprint is most likely moving to Lte. Keeping hspa+ and moving from wiimax would be sprints best decision at least we would have truly unlimited data. Let's hope carriers don't become full dominant with lte since they have full control of it. I don't want to be charged for youtube or facebook.

This used to be correct, but the definitions for what is considered "4G" have changed after it was recognized that HSPA+, WiMax, and LTE are all technologies that are delivering significantly faster speeds and an enhanced user experience when compared to 3G; so, HSPA+ is technically considered an official 4G technology.
There would be ups and downs to a Sprint- T-Mobile merger. I all depends on how it is executed.
T-Mobile NEEDS more spectrum - Sprint/Nextel has a lot of it. From a technology standpoint it used to seem impossible to merge the companies - After all sprint already has a CDMA & iDen network, plus WiMax, but T-Mobile operates off of GSM/UMTS technology.
The reason this speculation is different now is due to the fact that both companies have "loosely" discussed moving to LTE "eventually" and have been apprehensive about comitting to it. If they pair up, then migrate to LTE, it will allow the networks to be on the same playing field (as well as put the combined company in a competitive position against AT&T/Verizon).
As much as I hate to say it, this is very possible (maybe even probable) but would take a lonnnggg time to be a reality.
I dont see why so many people are complaining. With the merging of the two companies, we get better coverage and faster 4G speeds and much more phones will be developed for us. Tmobile was lacking as far as great smartphones before the glacier and g2. Were just now coming around.
So stop complaining, I'm actually excited if this happens.

^^ Article that says that it will be consider officilly 4G
I agree.. It not something that would happen overnight or for that matter a year or so... Sure the names and prices and everything in between wont take long but merging the two companies into a single Wireless technology would take years...
But in the end sprint would have a huge wireless footprint.. GSM/UMTS with CDMA/WiMax and eventually LTE
If Sprint decides (if it merges) to continue supporting those frequencies.. it will have if not the biggest wide variety of phones
I only care if the pricing of data plan will change.

So with at&t becoming another monopoly will you stay with it?

Now that they engulfed tmobile do you think we will get some awesome android devices?

Two things ...
1) ATT is lying - well sort of. They can get away with it because their definition of 4G is very broad. When they say LTE they actually mean HSDPA.
2) The folks in the store are indoctrinated by the company so they believe the Inspire is LTE as well.
I'd love to be proven wrong but unfortunately the Inspire is H+ only (HSDPA).

It doesn't take a genius to figure out:
1: LTE tech is still brand new, and very few select phones have the hardware to support it. (All verizon phones)
2: The Inspire 4G is a Desire HD without an FFC. The Desire HD does not have support for LTE, therefor, we can assume this as well on the inspire 4G
When AT&T talk about 4G, they make sure they include an asterisk* and the details will follow in the tiny text. We get 4G like speeds assuming they complete the backhaul, but no LTE. We'd need hardware for that.

Actually, this is the official ATT page for the Inspire 4g.
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...re+(TM)+4G*&q_sku=sku5100284#fbid=ZSGfIgw7m3E
If you scroll near the very bottom, Technical Specifications section, lower left corner it says, "4G* - HSPA+/LTE: HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul." No where does it say it is LTE compatible. Also, that little asterisk leads you to this, like someone mentioned earlier, "*4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul. Available in limited areas. Availability increasing with ongoing backhaul deployment. Requires 4G device and compatible data plan. Learn more at att.com/network."
Would be nice if that's possible, but it's not with this phone. But I'll have to wait 2 more years anyways to be able to upgrade again, haha.

I make a habit of changing my phone every 2 years as a rule. By then maybe AT&T may have their LTE in par with Verizon. It really doesn't matter with my paltry 200mb account anyway, whether I use it with 1 to 2 megabit at a time or 9 to10 megabit at a time.

I honestly really like this phone. It's fast, the screen is fine, the stock ROM isn't terrible, and there's hardware buttons. The screen honestly could have been a bit bigger, but it's not unpleasant to use at all. The camera is great as well.

ok, here is sort a dream: if Samsung would put the Sidekick 4G keyboard on the Galaxy S III! i would buy that SO fast! otherwise i just gotta wait and see what comes out i guess, there is nothing that i know of yet.
Tmobile did say the Sidekick line would continue, and if they could keep the great keyboard, AND bring up the other specs closer to a high-end device, i would get that.
I'm not a fan of QWERTY's honestly.
I only got this phone because it was a free upgrade from my MyTouch 4g which I got via a free upgrade from my G2
I only accepted the upgrade because its truly an upgrade in power specs. I haven't used the keyboard for more than 100 words in its entirety. So I will be moving to the all hailed GSIII IF it is all it is cracked to be. As I like giant screens with thin bodies. Maybe a HTC One XL because I am loving this premadonna sense right now its frickkng awesome.
Typed by ---- oh wait! I'm schizophrenic!
My hope would be for HTC to reconsider their decision and make another device with a hardware keyboard, something in the quad-core arena.
Keep the tv-out so the form factor can be kept small, and the smaller screen is off-set by plugging into a bigger one mostly anywhere.
I get the impression that hardware keyboard devices are a dying breed, and if they die out completely then so does my participation in the smart-phone arena.
I don't like cell phones, don't use the phone function of this one, and without a hardware keyboard the frustration level of using a pocket coputer like this is off the charts for me.
As convenient as this is for my job, I can be served by a transformer or something similar fine, and I have a bluetooth keyboard but it's not as worthwhile as an attached keyboard.
Samsung is my hope for the future as long as HTC intends to give us the finger...

Or I'm sure some xda member will figure out how to make the phone work on other networks.
Whatever the case may be, this will be much further down the road when everyone has moved on from this phone and if no other qwertys have come out since then

Lmfao. Ok its time for Some Tech Talk. Tmo and At&t both use GSM towers. Sprint and verizon use CDMA. With GSM you need a SIM Card. With CDMA there is no SIM Card. Long story short it has zero to do with Radio Flashing. I dont care what radio you flash unless verizon moves to GSM which will never happen no verizon droid phone will work with Tmo or At&t. Even if you find an unlocked verizon phone you still cant use it on a GSM Network. The hardware wont allow it. No amount of Software hacking will get you there either. It is beyond impossible.
Half right. There is such a thing as a world phone...both CDMA and GSM.

Isn't the Doubleshot a world phone? I thought it was....

After reading about world phones, this article seems to refer to quad band gsm phones. Our phone doesn't have CDMA... I guess I knew that though.

You only need a GSM Phone to be considered a world phone. I think 2 countries including the US use CDMA the rest use GSM. So basically yes the DS is a world phone.

'sigh' even though I'm sick to the point of being bed bound, I still researched this for you. Do your home work before posting. Also, I know the difference between gsm and cdma. After over 400 posts on this site, it's remarkable how little credit you give me. But back to the point, there are cdma phones out there that have Sim slots, also known as world phones. It does depend on the hardware however. So a Sim slot =/= unlocked for domestic gsm use. Actually it never means that, because I've never come across a world phone that's already unlocked for domestic gsm. Usually you have to flash a new baseband to enable the radio to work properly (assuming the radio has the capability to run on your bands).
The thread is brewing as we speak. Maybe you guys would like to stir the pot

Yes you are correct. It was just the way you said it I assumed you were trying to say you could make a CDMA only device a "World phone" by simply flashing a radio.
Apple saw the value in iPhones with CDMA, and Google owns Motorola Mobility so the push for the Droid team to branch out past Verizon might be just the kick start they need.

Motorolla is in limbo - Google has repeatedly said they will not make a 'Google' branded hardware phone, they bought Motorolla for the patents. Most likely they will sell the hardware division of it off to Huwai (or however you spell it).
I wouldn't count on Motorolla making out from being a part of the Google empire, quite the opposite - they will be stripped of anything Google deems to be of value and what's left will be sold to the highest bidder.
