HTC's update on bootloaders - HTC Sensation

**UPDATE 8/3/2011**
They've just posted this on facebook, I know we have S-off now but I thought I'd post it anyway :
"Since our last update, many of you have asked how the bootloader unlocking process will actually work, and in particular why HTC's most recently released devices still have a locked bootloader. Rest assured we're making progress toward our goal to roll out the first software updates in August to support unlocking for the global HTC Sensation, followed soon by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. Because unlocking the bootloader provides extensive control over the device and modifications may cause operation, security and experience issues, new devices will continue to ship locked but will support user-initiated unlocking using a new Web-based tool.
So how will this work? The Web tool, which will launch this month, requires that you register an account with a valid e-mail address and accept legal disclaimers that unlocking may void all or parts of your warranty. Then plug in your phone to a computer with the Android SDK loaded to retrieve a device identifier token, which you can then enter into the Web tool to receive a unique unlock key via e-mail. Finally, apply the key to your device and unlocking will be initiated on your phone.
We're excited to bring bootloader unlocking to developers and enthusiasts, and we feel this new Web tool will meet your needs and continue to provide customers with the best experience. Thanks to the community for supporting these efforts! "

It always voided warranty as far as I know.

This is why most of us are not waiting on HTC to unlock our phones.

Dear HTC,
Please choke on a bag of dicks.
Thanks.

It's great that they're providing an easy and official way to unlock our phones. Root as soon as the next phone we buy is released!
Stop being so cynical, cynical people. :/

So in a simple terms htc quitely waiting -.- all of us are lucky to have s-off done by alpharevx... and if we do found on how to s-on back the device our warranty wont be void coz we didnt agree on the legitimate thingy and the s-off tool made by htc...

they wont get my IMEI haha thats how there going to track down who everr use there tool people beware cut off your tell htc and check for software updates htc if your listening your a bunch of stupid "forum rule" holes

If you wanted to S-OFF using HTC's method, they would most likely keep a database of all the device IDs that have used their S-OFF tool, and from there they would know if you've voided your warranty regardless if you have returned the phone to S-ON. But to be honest the only scenario I see where HTC reject your warranty claim after doing S-OFF would be if you bricked the phone. If you are saying stuff like there is excessive dust under the screen, or there are hardware faults, they can hardly reject your warranty claim there, even if you did S-OFF.
Anyways, I bet HTC will probably continue with their tight security policy on their future phones, whilst allowing you to void your warranty and get S-OFF. To be honest this is far better than nothing, it means we don't have to wait (long) for the S-OFF of a new HTC phone to be released. Imagine, buying the latest HTC phone and having ROMs and development popping up on the XDA forums from day one. Thats fantastic.
Don't dismiss HTC's efforts just because we don't need them anymore for the HTC Sensation/EVO 3D thanks to -Revolutionary-, true for now we are happy without them, but when the next HTC phone comes out everyone will appreciate S-OFF from day one.

All u have to do is s-on....no need to worry

Just curious, is unlock bootloader and S-Off the same? Would an unlock bootloader allows one to root his phone?

Yes.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App

Am I right in thinking that all previous HTC phones did not have S-ON?
If so, I am confused... That means that you are voiding your warranty to get your phone into a state every other phone is by default?

MOTOROLA Atrix bootloader was just unlocked and I noticed something...

They only need to type in "fastboot oem unlock" in command prompt to unlock the bootloader whereas HTC requires an exploit to turn S-OFF and then the bootloader is unlocked.
It's official.
Motorola phones are about to be more easy to unlock than HTC phones like our trusty Mytouch 4G's. I find this deeply unnerving.
Yea but now all future htc phones come with unlocked bootloaders, so there still ahead. Don't think it gets any easier then that

IMHO Motorola has this one won. It's simple enough for someone to unlock and do their own thing. But yet on the other hand someone who shouldn't be tampering won't be. I mean how many threads have we seen where the title says "i cannot get s-off".... i mean with either one being the way they are. i'm not promising my loyalty to HTC.
Very good point...but once u unlock the moto bootloader its unlocked for good with no way of locking...htc on the other hand...its reversable.

Eh, sort of. HTC really has stated what they are going to do. HTC said they will not have locked bootloader. Which means like the Magic and the Dream. Just root an install. But i'm sure they'll have some sort of
Code:
oem fastboot unlock
to truly unlock them.
I guess this means there are no more companies with locked bootloaders from here on out

About time companies started listening! They can't deny the fact android is meant to be truly open and the fact that it shows no sign of slowing down in phone sales/daily activations. Android ftw!!

Unfortunately it comes down to whether or not carriers allow the unlocking and/or how they react to modding. That thing that went around couple months ago stating that carriers could detect modding and would kick users off the network shook a lot of people up and sort of gives us an idea of how powerful the carriers can be.
Hopefully that's never a reality or I may have to switch to... wow there's really no other platform I'd rather switch to.
Yea, let's see how many customers they would lose if companies tried pulling that ****. I know were the minority that root our phones and get excited about unlocked bootloaders/s=off most people don't even understand what root is or probaly care to learn but if a carrier were to pull that type of move it would only be hurting itself.

Not exactly, actually... It'll get to the point where people will type it in thinking it does magical stuff, or thinking it does something to speed up the phone, or when an app fC's they'll blame it on the unlock. Basically, once this method falls into the hands of curious users who have no idea what it does, it'll start getting out of control. IMO There should be more to it that just fastboot oem unlock, to keep it far away from noobs and forums flooded with questions asking "wtf did i just do?"

Problems after the update

So a couple of days ago I got the OTA Gingerbread update. After the update my phone has had some problems. When I text, the buttons stop vibrating sometimes. And also some of my contacts on the messaging app just show up as phone numbers. So please tell me what may be happening.
Can't offer any explanations but keep in mind, ota updates can be problematic because its insalling on top of what's currently installed, as opposed to wiping and doing a clean install.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I would suggest taking the phone in or possibly better off calling tech support and have them re push the update and go from there...or just root it and flash a custom ROM and enjoy the phone how it should've been.

The only problem to rooting my phone is that I might want to trade it in for another Inspire, because the screen is starting to pop out of the phone in the bottom left corner. I just don't want my phone to void the warrenty, and make it so I can't return it.

I've returned 2 phone because of that, 1st one was within the original 30 days and 2nd one was after and I thankfully have a tech warranty center close by.
How ever on the second one, a refurb I don't have working GPS and the guy would not let me exchange it again and gave me a number for HTC to call and get it exchanged that way, why I'm not sure but it may have been my fault any way. Lol

Weird. Thats the newest hardware with the oldest firmware. Either way it doesn't matter as there is a root for everything right now. Good thing you got the latest hardware though.
I'd like to go ahead and confirm my experience here too.
The first four characters of my serial number are "HT24". It's not as recent as the OP's, but I'd like to think it's relatively new.
At any rate, I received a warranty replacement with 1.73.
Moreover, it came with SuperCID 111111 and the "re-locked" identifier. This doesn't particularly perturb me as it saved me a few seconds when unlocking. Yeah, I ended up with someone's leftovers with some newer parts.
Battery life on the replacement is around 5.5 hours of screentime with 30% brightness and LTE enabled. I think refurb is preferable since it's cosmetically pristine and every part has been tested more stringently than a factory original.
It's odd that they aren't being re locked and cid reset. Is refurbishment done by AT&T or the manufacturer typically?

Typically, refurbishments are done by the manufacturer. AT&T just serves as an intermediate in the process that makes sure you have a phone as quick as possible. Once they receive our broken phones, they have the pleasure of doing what we did not want to do - deal with HTC.
If you had to deal with the manufacturer directly, you would be looking at two to three weeks for a replacement device.

HTC seems to be very understanding. Unless it's bricked or something directly related to unlocking the bootloader I doubt they care. And legally they can't. It's like taking your car in for warranty repair on the engine and they void the warranty because you installed better brake pads.

[Q] Uh oh Spaghettio

Hey Guys
First of all, Hi! Ive had several devices over the years, so Im not new to XDA, but just to this side of them. So i bought a used HTC One S for Tmobile, Loving it, but then the power button started working intermittently, shades of my nexus one, now it doesn't work at all. I have tried taking off the sim cover and pushing the button directly, but it just won't work. So, I am using a shake to unlock app, but what happens if it dies?
Does anybody have any idea how to fix this? Or is this common with this model?
Regards
Trevor

The warranty statement says it applies only to the original buyer.
It can be transferred if sold where HTC as consented in writing to the transfer.
(I'm quoting the warranty statement article 1 here, don't ask me what they mean by that)

I'd be interested in this too. I know that TMO is really helpful, but not so much so with exchanging handsets. What is HTC Customer Service like? Clearly not terrible...
I got a used hd2 a wile back and the touch screen went out on it. All HTC did was ask for the serial # for warranty varification. and they replaced the front screen for free. All I paid was over night shipping to them. They replaced the screen and shipped my hd2 back to me that same day they got it. One day turn around was awsome. Maybe I got lucky but I was still vary impressed with there service.

From talking to AT&T warranty, I had the woman read to me their warranty void crap. Its for liquid and physical damage. Also, I asked about the boot loader. After a long wait time she talked with her supervisor, as long as the boot loader says relocked its still considered in warranty. But you have to send the phone back with the stock ruu on it.
