They only need to type in "fastboot oem unlock" in command prompt to unlock the bootloader whereas HTC requires an exploit to turn S-OFF and then the bootloader is unlocked.
It's official.
Motorola phones are about to be more easy to unlock than HTC phones like our trusty Mytouch 4G's. I find this deeply unnerving.
Yea but now all future htc phones come with unlocked bootloaders, so there still ahead. Don't think it gets any easier then that

IMHO Motorola has this one won. It's simple enough for someone to unlock and do their own thing. But yet on the other hand someone who shouldn't be tampering won't be. I mean how many threads have we seen where the title says "i cannot get s-off".... i mean with either one being the way they are. i'm not promising my loyalty to HTC.
Very good point...but once u unlock the moto bootloader its unlocked for good with no way of locking...htc on the other hand...its reversable.

Eh, sort of. HTC really has stated what they are going to do. HTC said they will not have locked bootloader. Which means like the Magic and the Dream. Just root an install. But i'm sure they'll have some sort of
Code:
oem fastboot unlock
to truly unlock them.
I guess this means there are no more companies with locked bootloaders from here on out

Unfortunately it comes down to whether or not carriers allow the unlocking and/or how they react to modding. That thing that went around couple months ago stating that carriers could detect modding and would kick users off the network shook a lot of people up and sort of gives us an idea of how powerful the carriers can be.
Hopefully that's never a reality or I may have to switch to... wow there's really no other platform I'd rather switch to.
Yea, let's see how many customers they would lose if companies tried pulling that ****. I know were the minority that root our phones and get excited about unlocked bootloaders/s=off most people don't even understand what root is or probaly care to learn but if a carrier were to pull that type of move it would only be hurting itself.

Not exactly, actually... It'll get to the point where people will type it in thinking it does magical stuff, or thinking it does something to speed up the phone, or when an app fC's they'll blame it on the unlock. Basically, once this method falls into the hands of curious users who have no idea what it does, it'll start getting out of control. IMO There should be more to it that just fastboot oem unlock, to keep it far away from noobs and forums flooded with questions asking "wtf did i just do?"

This has been known for a while .
I don't see this being a problem for very long especially on htc, considering that phones like the holiday will more then likely have international "brothers/sisters", that means there will be dev support worldwide working to break open a phones boot loader. I would assume the only reason it hasn't been done to the atrix, is because honestly the phone is a flop. Blur put a bad taste in everyones mouth and not alot of people want to mess with moto.
If you hit up other htc phone boards here on xda there are literally hundreds of developers working on htc phones. I have said it before where there is a will there is a way.

Locked bootloaders do much harm to the phones' sales. I like the sense rom but the default stock one comes with a lot of bloat and poor battery performance. I flashed the dilligaf's V2 rom and my phone now flies. When the manufacturers cannot unleash the full potential of the phone, why the hell do they have to lock their bootloaders for?

HAHAHA! That's funny sh*t.
Anyways... If the manufacturers and Phone companies would actually leave the phones open, we wouldn't have this issue.
It wouldn't be too hard for them to do...build a recovery image right into the phone. If something screws up, they is a keypress sequence that would force install factory firmware. Bam...No more brick, and start over. I know I have reference the PSP in several other posts, but they did it right. Maybe the phone manufacturers should take a hint.
There is a PSP dev that goes by Dark_Alex... He created the "Despertar del Cementerio." This translates to "Wake the Dead." This was a service battery and memory stick combo that would literally UNBRICK your PSP. I actually have one, and have purposely killed the power during a firmware update to test it. And it works! Anyways, the point is...this is VERY possible with these phones, no one has done it yet tho.

Not sure why people blame the carriers for this. Sure they would like you to pay for tethering but they obviously don't have a set policy. Devices range from Samsung which can be flashed without even rooting in some cases to Motorola with locked, signed, encrypted, blah blah. If the carriers were the ones making the decision on bootloaders then there would seem to be more consistency across manufacturers. Sprint even said publicly that they have no say in the matter and were deferring to HTC on the fate of the EVO 3d.

That may be true publicly but privately, I believe carriers heavily "encourage" manufacturers to lock the bl (perhaps even with incentives.)
Carriers defer to the manufacturers questions like this to avoid looking like the bad guy. Kinda like the hot-potato when it comes to OS upgrades.
Sprint: "We're waiting for HTC to get Froyo ready."
HTC: "We're waiting for Sprint to QA their custom apps and functionality."

With the option of an s-off bootloader to the regular user can be disastrous. Let's face it people can be idiots and they would blame it on HTC when they eff up their phones
With htcdev unlock as it is, its pretty much impossible to brick permanently with most phones. With s off however one simple mistake can be disastrous

I say wait till windows OS matures (maybe a generation after this one) because they don't have many important apps in their market ecosystem, currently. HTC One X is a good phone and you won't miss much except for the wireless charging plate included in the Lumia 920; uses the same processor too.

I read a few articles about this back in December. Any phones bought before the law went into effect can still be unlocked legally by whatever means a person sees fit. To have an unlocked new device you must either purchase a device already unlocked like the nexus 4 or an iPhone sold buy apple unlocked, or you must get special permission from the carrier. I also remember reading an article about rooting or unlocking tablets becoming illegal unless provided by the manufacture like how Google does with the nexus line (couldn't find any recent articles over this).

There's a lot of FUD going around. Even The Verge (90 Seconds), had a spot that was vague and seemed to suggest that bootloader unlocking was now illegal (already gone through the courts and confirmed legal).
I think the new law is a net zero effect. Nothing really changes except that carriers have the option of pursuing you legally for taking their phone (your phone) off their network. I don't see them putting a lot of resources into enforcement.
