What's taking so long for HTC/Verizon to release 2.3.4 for Thunderbolt? - Thunderbolt General

I don't get it, really so many phones came out with 2.3.4 already why is Thunderbolt is so behind?!

From what I've seen in the developer forums, the Dev's are really having to rework the leaked kernels pretty heavily to get them stable; normally striping out all the garbage HTC is trying to cram into it. So I'm thinking between HTC and verizon trying to cram so much crap in, they can't get it stable enough to release.
just my thought.

im thinking we will get 2.3.5 not 2.3.4. and it should come by the end of the month or in september.

no offense but you would probably be wrong. most of us knew we wouldn't get it until august or so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not aware they are even using a base derived from Tbolt ROMs for kernels.

2.3.5 i think comes from the nexus s update to fix the signal issues. im sure at the least the tbolt will get OTA 2.3.4.

Nope your probably right. Thought I read that they were using a leaked kernel from HTC, for some of the ROMs/kernels but probably my misunderstanding

Wouldn't hold my breath for the update tbh. With what we're cranking out, people should be content with what's available. If you guys got an OTA 2.3.4 update you'd want it customized anyway so....

Surprise its August where's that update I have been reading about.

They are using leaked RUUs for the base on Gingerbread Sense ROMs, but any custom GB kernels are frankensteined together from different sources I believe. They have to do that because even with an RUU leak we don't have the kernel source from HTC for Gingerbread.

no phone is ever current... the moment it is released another OS/hardware set is going to be announced within a week and that hardware that is not yet on the shelf is already out dated.. it’s just the way things work. And it’s a good thing to. if we had the most current device it would take years for the next generation device to come out and we would slip behind the curve even faster. All that said... it is extremely ridiculous that we are not on the newest OS version given the amount of time this one has been on the shelf.

If you want to blame anything, blame HTC for putting sense on the phone, since they can't keep it updated quickly enough to follow google's software rollout.
Also, there seems to be one of these threads every week. Please go complain to verizon or HTC, not to XDA where most are already running gingerbread, it's far more useful.

I saw this asked on another forum, but couldn't the 4g radio cause any issue? Doesn't make sense since the developers here already have it working, but it seems like the only reasonable explaination..if there was one. Maybe the sensation, dinc 2 or evo3D are the new flagships and therefore thunderbolt is put farther down the ladder?

Most likely the LTE Radio is/was the issue. However, no other LTE phone has GB either so people just complain to complain.

new cm7 is 2.3.5

I've used froyo and gingerbread both. I could be missing something, but does gingerbread bring something to the table that is just so remarkable that we MUST have it? It doesn't seem any faster. I'm not seeing features that are much more than pretty fluff. Some of the features I STILL miss from my Blackberry aren't there in 2.3. It's nice, but I'm pretty much indifferent to it.

Does anybody really care about what Samsung officially provides anymore? I know I don't really give a damn what AT&T/Samsung put out anymore. It means exactly nothing to me.

Who really gives a flying F**k anymore. I already knew from previous phones that this would be 1 of those phones that doesn't have enough ram, hardware and etc to run ICS. We have GB based roms with all working features we can all use now all tweaked up to give the best performance possible. I bought the Infuse for 2 damn reasons and 2 only. 1. The screen is big enough for my hands, to view pictures, browse the web, and watch videos. 2. You can't brick this phone, I've done masses and masses of research on this phone and this is the only phone that can handle the screw ups and bad flashes, (WORTH BUYING JUST FOR THIS REASON) ICS - Who gives a damn, By next year we'll have another OS rolling out and ICS will be old news and you won't want it. I hear the next OS is to be called Jelly Bean!
Edit: the next OS is suppose to get better camera software, apps that take advantage of Hardware acceleration possibly Apps that will take advantage of Dual Core, But yet I didn't hear anything about ICS taking advantage of Acceleration and or Apps taking advantage of Dual Core. My 2 cents would be save your money and WAIT!!! Stop wasting your money.
Why has the Infuse forum become such garbage for the most part. All I ever really see anymore are people who have absolutely no idea what they're doing and want you to wipe their ass and hold their hand through installing anything custom, or things like this.... I miss the pre-November Infuse forums...

(><) LOL! It's really not that hard if you know how to read, This forum seems to be repeating itself with the same topics each and every day for the most part. I feel all confuzled with what's been happening since September on this forum when I first got my Infuse. Dman, Entropy, Linuzbozo, and a few others who have been here since that time till now have been Great! and have shown a lot of support. But as much as I have read so far it seems people are to *****y and needy of things they want but may never have. These devs show Great effort into helping us achieve a great experience with the Infuse, and yet everyone wants to complain about their hard work when they should be complimenting them.

AOSP ICS runs on a Nexus S beautifully. Its hardware is virtually identical to a Vibrant (from what I understand). To my knowledge, a Vibrant is a Galaxy S derivative (or clone) so obviously it'll run on a Galaxy S phone.
If Samsung would provide the binaries necessary to run it on an Infuse, someone or a group of people would have a ROM cooked up from source in no time.
However, Samsung has only so many developers and they have to draw the line somewhere so someone gets the axe. It's similar to what Google did for the Nexus One users. I hear that ICS will run on that phone just fine. I haven't confirmed that in their forums though.

Vibrant has an almost stable ICS ROM out; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362961
And yes, a Nexus S and a Vibrant are almost pretty much the same phone.
The lack of support for us Galaxy S users is disappointing, but given the Vibrant didn't even get an official Gingerbread update, it's crazy to assume we'd get ICS. Now, for the Infuse 4G, I don't really know how different it is, but I've seen ports from the i9000 on here, they have a running ICS version, someone could try porting it.
Sammy seemed to give up on this phone barely after launch huh? If only they'd release the kernel source we'd be golden.
Ics really is not all that...I ran it on several phones already...and yea its cool for a bit...but I always go back to my tweaked out catyrom cause its way faster....it wasn't as impressive as I thought it would be...people want it on the infuse because we don't have it. People always want want they don't have. Its really not that big a deal in my opinion...

I don't know why the Infuse is such a hot topic, Captivate forums were never this hostile.
As I stated, I like my Infuse as it is! Easy to flash and manipulate whatever way I want.

stock UCLB3 > any other ROM

With stock ROM I get:
• 2-3 day battery life
• All apps work
• Strongest signal
• 100% working wifi
• fastest overall, zero load time for almost everything
• and finally I don't need to install gapps or anything
With any other ROM I get:
• Possibly 1 day battery life
• Orgasm if I get any signal at all
• Wifi works completely on one in a billion roms, flaky on most
• Bluetooth rarely works
• No fix for any issues on ROMs that don't have major devs working on them
• Some apps don't work, and on a few ROMs some apps even kill the system and make it hot reboot
• Lag like it's a 3-year-old donut phone with the processor speed of a retarded potato with AIDS
• some need gapps, which is annoying to re-install every time you update, which also, you have to do every few days instead of once a year
So my conclusion is that screw custom ROMs. It might just be my device but that's how it plays out. I'll be much more careful to buy a phone that will have real support in the future, like the SGS II, Captivate, and SGS III do/will have.
Oh yeah and about my sig, that is the only ROM that I've gotten close to working 100%. And he's not a gtg, but he's got more support than big devs like that ever did, so if you're a sheep and need to use custom ROMs go with MoM.

I apologize, but I strongly detest the statement. I do respect every bit of what you have said, but I really do think that it is just a matter of personal use.
I have ran Aeon and other amazing custom ROMs and so far the best I have tried was Zeus 6. There are a few kinks, but hey-- it works!
Consequently, though, it's all a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer the debloated stock and customize it their own (i.e., build.prop tweaks, etc).
What I am getting at here is that there is no need to bash other custom ROMs. Although you did not point your finger on any specific one, but it really means a lot for people to like the developers' work. It's an Android Device... This is the main reason we got this: open source.

I get the opposite results of u bro... my lag on stock is sooo bad that I was about to throw my phone on the ground as hard as I could. Ics with some tweaks was awesome, jellybean should be really good if it ever comes. Now on my tablet stock on that is pretty good, with aosp it would fly though.

Plus, I agree with ryanscool, any time I have to use stock B3, everything is laggy. Personally, I think that Sammy just did such a crappy job on official GB and used halfass or dirty fixes to make it work. So when ppl try to mod, the crappiness comes out...
There are tons of work being done on the Infuse and I was here when ppl said development was dead; you gotta appreciate what's here man.
My advice Way, stay with stock and stop these random threads broskie

Advice after personal experience

I had Infuse with original Froyo for a while and heard wonderful things about Gingerbread (GB), how battery is much better and stuff.
So I waited for official GB upgrade and used standard way AT&T is doing upgrades.
Gingerbread was bad, freezes, reboots, etc. BTW, my wifes Atrix 2 works nice with GB and holds charge for two days. That was one of the reasons I believed in GB.
Since my GB was so bad I started to look here to get devices rooted and install something new and better.
Unfortunately nothing is better than original Froyo. Sorry guys, I do not understand what is so good in ICS or JellyBean? Can somebody list new features?
I'm using now CM10 8/8, my portable hotspot is not working, my battery is worth, my Bluetooth is having issues, my GPS was not working at all until 8/8 build and most of all I do not see any features of ICS or JB worth spending time installing it. And I did not even try to evaluate camera/video. According to some notes, HD video is having issues.
I am not new to technologies and I did all upgrades according to dev notes. This is just my experience and may help some new people save some time trying.
BTW 8/8 very laggy, changing screens slow, even if I put min cpu to 1200, gps shows satellites but I did not have enough time (waited 15 minutes) and did not get any sat locks.

Well...obviously rooting/flashing roms isntt for you...you know its easy to go back to stock froyo...
And the whole point of ics/jb is staying up to date with the latest software...any true tech guy would want to flash ics/jb-regardless of the bugs
And that is your personal expierence about cm10 8/8...I got a GPS lock in less then a minute...and I have 0 lag
Imho opinion this thread is pointless...it clearly states in ops what doesnt work-just go back to froyo...its obvious that's what you want

I was like that 20 years ago, yeah, all new stuff, bugs? we can live with them. But this is point of view of a hacker. The ultimate goal is to make it work, not to make it work maybe. Does it make sense to just "stay with new technology, maybe" ?
I drifted from being hacker who makes cool things to make applications which work and feel great about it.
Most of the people just need their phone to work. Oh, yeah, you are texting now with JellyBean !
My one and a half cent:
IMHO For most people rooting and flashing is probably something they should not do. All they want is a functional phone that does phone things: text, make calls, check Facebook, etc. That is exactly what they get when their phone comes out of the box. That's great and awesome: don't worry, be happy.
There are others "hackers" or not, who like to tinker, figure out how things work, "try" and get them to work more efficiently, or "better". This includes those who are not as technical as the devs but are willing to help, test and report.
These people who are ready and willing to live with the fact that their expensive functional phone may end up as an expensive piece of plastic and metal...well root and flash away.
But to complain that your phone is worse after using someones hardwork and effort is pointless. Report problems yes...complain...not cool.
These boards are filled with complaints and cries for help from people who probably should have stuck with the phone they got from the store and just been happy. Rooting is not for everyone.
Peace

You don't like ways to break your phone?
You don't like to learn how to add a new APN?
You don't want to downgrade your 720p video to 480p?
- joking.
In several aspects, I agree with you re: FROYO. The Froyo phone does what it is suppose to do. Great cam/vid; GPS, mms and call. If you're not dying the the latest, it runs just fine. Froyo doesn't support Gtalk Video
I'm not sure about your experience with GB though. I've not seen the lags, freezes and reboots on the official firmware.
The main thing I recall from official GB is make sure you install it without a microSD in place and after it is installed, copy off all your stuff from the internal SDcard and do a factory reset under /setting/privacy.
Here a froyo treat for you:

Stock is okay but it has too much room for improvement and that's where our brilliant devs come in. Believe in them and in their work. They are not here to turn phones into robots that will lead us to our doom

I drifted from being hacker who makes cool things to make applications which work and feel great about it.
Most of the people just need their phone to work. Oh, yeah, you are texting now with JellyBean !

Please don't make this into one of those "I'm too old for this crap" debates. I might possibly be as old as you are, seeing as how I got my start on SCO Xenix way back when the 386DX25 was the processor to have.
Hell, I remember MS Windows 1.1! 6 black and white windows, the beginnings of multi-tasking...
All these people want, in essence, is a phone with the newest available software... that works. Thats why there is always someone working on some problem or "bug", trying and (99.9% of the time) succeeding. Sometimes we fail, but there is always someone else willing to pick up where we left off.
One reason I enjoy playing with firmware...; the challenge. I've always been one to take it apart and somehow make it better, regardless of what it is. A car, a radio, a computer... whatever.
On a side note, maybe reflashing your firmware will fix the issues your having with your Infuse now?

IDK, maybe you got the initial, buggy, official GB update? I jumped ship and flashed Zeus long before that. And it ran smoother and I got better battery life with it than stock Froyo.
And it's pretty clearly written in each thread what is being seen by folks using the ROMs. For the CM10 build, It's pretty well known that GPS had issues until 8/8. It's posted clearly that several folks had issues with trebuchet lagging, so they loaded an alternate launcher and got better results. It's posted that wifi hotspot doesn't work with WPA or WPA2 with the bcrmhd driver (think that's the specific driver) and disabling security will allow it to work.
I know there are 200+ pages on some of these ROM threads, and many of the posts are 'me too' 'OMG this is so cool' or 'WTF? Read the OP'. But there are useful nuggets of information in there, especially the OP, and you really need to read them all to know what you might see with that ROM, or at least to know 'oh, I'm not the only one with that problem, and here's how they fixed it.'
In short, don't be ready to jump to a ROM that's only been out a short time until you know that either the bugs are fixed or you can live with the bugs that have been reported. Believe it or not, there IS a reason it takes time for official updates to roll out too, and it's not just to piss everyone off.

I saw this in my great grandfather's office.
I'm not sure what it is.
I first PC was an Intel i7 quadcore 8gb RAM and 2tb drive.

Way better battery life on 2.20 update.

Still running stock AT&T os as I dont see the need to run a custom rom. Lte battery life has increased nearly 5 fold in standby. 10% every 5 hours as opposed to 1 hour with a full signal.

I'm stock on 2.20 (just dd'd the system.img from the 2.20 ruu haha).. Froze a couple bloat apps I don't like. Outside of that, I don't see advantage to the custom ROM's we have. When AOKP or CM10 get up to snuff, I'll definitely switch. But short of that, I don't really get it. 2.20 is amazing, really.

I'm with you beaups. After running only custom roms since the one x came out, I've been on stock 2.20 for the last week and prefer it.
I don't see any tangible performance improvements in day-to-day use with any of the custom roms, and I can handle my own bloat removal. Nor do I use quicksettings or care about minor theming.
Battery life and signal strength/speed on stock 2.20 has been far better than any other custom rom I've used so far, too, and the dreaded low volume bug seems to have been resolved.

You can learn about all that on any android site out there, I was just saying xda IMHO is more for modding your phone. I never said it was ALL about hacking, just giving my opinion that most of the info on here is geared towards modding, rooting, theming, etc. Sure theres discussions in the general thread about that stuff as well as in the themes and apps thread but the ratio of modding info to "general" info is about 5:2

Not going to argue there. I agree, it's mostly about rooting and hacking your phone. My point was towards your statement " but what info on here can you actually use without being rooted? "
I listed things that i've personally done on this forum without having my phone rooted and i dont see why that's not possible.
Anyway, this is a useless argument to have. If someone wants to read/post on this forum without messing with their phone, that's their right and we shouldn't try to push them out.

[INFO][DUMP] AT&T MB865 ICS Leak #2 (9.4.12)

9/10/12 - FOR THOSE ON THE FIRST AT&T ICS LEAK: You may notice that you have an OTA Update available to you - it will update you to the newest version of Moto's ICS (as found in leak #2)... If you install it, you will not have any way to fxz your way out of trouble, receive the official ota (though this is probably close enough to it), or flash back to GB just for fun...
--------------------------------------------------------
Well, I'm sure Moto has been frantically checking our forums this week (out-dated, but always true - i'd like to think), and from the looks of things around here, they probably thought that this new ICS ota package slipped by unnoticed... But, it hasn't.
I picked up this new leak off of cheesecake earlier this week:

}
The first shot is from the leak pulled on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012 - then it looks like someone didn't like the package name, and the second pic shows the leak (identical except the name) that has been on the server since Wednesday, Sept. 5... this looks like it's very close to the official release now.
So, why didn't you know about this leak?
Well, looks like you are already on ICS and/or not checking cheesecake , and more importantly, we did not want to just go and post the leak files for safety reasons - and it's a good thing that we didn't - because this new leak is more locked down than the first one, courtesy of the friendly folks at Moto.
As it stands, there is currently no way for us to downgrade back to GB from the new leak - and that is a sign of what's to come with the official OTA. (But, your devs are still working on that too)
Do some reading around the other forums/sites for Moto devices - they had the exact same thing - they could downgrade from some of the earlier leaks but not the more finalized ones or the official ota.
Post or PM with questions/concerns.. but, please don't be offended if I do not send you the leak files (I hope you understand).
Thanks to the other devs for their input and advice. Also, I want to give a very big and special thanks to Apex_Strider, Fall of Enosis, mtnlion, and DX2Trip for their contributions and troubles - if not for them, we would be in for a big surprise when the official release comes and someone tries to fxz back to gb - please make sure to hit the "Thanks" button for them.
Now, without further ado, Fall has a generous gift for anyone who's interested in making a ROM out of the new leak (see below)...
Ok guys, this leak came out and Altered asked a couple of us to test it. Now I can say from using the leak for a few days that it is more stable than the last.
HOWEVER:
I got myself into a jam and somehow deleted my backup and sent myself in a soft brick, while making some mods.
I cannot express the heavily enough to you:
WE CURRENTLY CANNOT FXZ BACK FROM THIS LEAK. MY A2 IS CURRENTLY STUCK IN FB. AND WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE RESTORED UNTIL WE GET A 4.0.4 FXZ
That being said, it runs great and a lot of the bugs were worked out from the last leak.
WHAT I KNOW WORKS:
Bootmenu works fine. SAFESTRAP HAS NOT BEEN TESTED. (I just somehow accidentally deleted my backup I made when I looped)
Jim's Root method works fine: Find it HERE. (Give proper thanks to Jim for it)
And since it is a Moto release, obviously WiFi, BT, and everything else works fine.
THINGS I NOTICED:
The Press and hold to pick a widget is gone all together.
I was one of the few who was actually OC'd to 1.2 on the previous leak. I was ALSO at 1.2 on this leak.
LASTLY:
This dump post is for creating ROMS from this dump ONLY. DO NOT mix and match files from either leak. They NEED to be treated as separate entities all together. That is how I got myself into my current softbrick. I flashed a mod that I thought would work, but the service.jars were just different enough to throw me into a loop. As long as you MAKE SURE you have a backup with Bootmenu you should be able to get out of a bootloop just fine.
Happy and careful building everyone:
Click here to download the system dump.
ENDING DISCLAIMER:
Obviously I am not responsible for what you do to your phone. Or if you brick it. We all know the risks with flashing. Safe flashing everyone! KEEP A BACKUP!

THANK YOU MAN! It was fun testing and by all means, ask me in the future cuz I'm always 100% down for the cause! Saddly since I made a boo-boo user error while fiddling with backups, I lost recovery and freaked before asking for help I went ahead and figured I test out the FXZ as well since theres nothing else I can do. (wouldnt boot past moto logo and errored out in AP mode saying no recovery) The FXZ DID leave me with a brick but no worries as I'll get a replacement soon within the week or so. Again, was fun testing and appreciate all your guys's hard work being done around here lately. Keep up the loyalty to our A2's...Ya'll rock! :good:

To note some other changes in this new leak: aside from the new bootloader "security" features and recovery, the system folder is quite a bit bigger than the first leak. (Fyi.. the system dump is mostly harmless if someone were to build a rom from it - should work fine on any 4.0.4 build.. The dangerous things are the bootloader and recovery)
Also, we are still looking into any possible options to restore those who have not hard bricked - either by going forward or back.. if anyone wants to seriously look into this and/or contribute some useful ideas, please feel free to pm me.

I have faith in you guys, that y'all will find a way around these soft bricked circumstances. If not, luckily we all have our warranties and/or insurances/backup devices, so we're not dead in the water.
For all others, if you happen to find a new leak on Cheesecake or otherwise, download and send to the devs here: DO NOT install the new leak(s) without consulting in full with the dev team, unless you'd like your phone to not boot.

(Fyi.. the system dump is mostly harmless if someone were to build a rom from it - should work fine on any 4.0.4 build.. The dangerous things are the bootloader and recovery)
Also, we are still looking into any possible options to restore those who have not hard bricked - either by going forward or back.. if anyone wants to seriously look into this and/or contribute some useful ideas, please feel free to pm me.
To the four noble gentlemen above: a heartfelt thanks and my deepest regrets for your efforts and virtual losses.. I wish you the best. And I kinda wish I never found that blasted leak... :/

I just wanted to say thanks to Alterd for finding this new leak and sharing all the info about it. Thank you to the testers as well. It sucks that you guys bricked your phones because of it but hopefully you'll be able to get your replacements soon. This new leak was handled a hell of a lot better than the last. Thanks again guys.

Some links for research for this current issue and the bootloader in general (though not specifically for the A2, they have some good info):

What I found was that the only major change between the first leak and this one is the cdt partition (all the other major ota partition file's md5 sums match those from the first leak except the cdt.bin) - and that's a major player in the bootloader - and that was the first thing to fail in flashing the fxz... and why the subsequent flash processes failed due to validation errors.. and probably why fastboot is now botched with an invalid CG error...
Anyway, just food for thought, digestion, and discussion...

Don't feel bad. We all knew the risks. We always do. It led me into somewhat of a phyrric victory as I am now on a wonderfully unlocked Samsung GS2 skyrocket rocking CM9.
Please. Don't feel bad. You make houses with bricks my good man.

Lol... Thanks again guys for your kind manner and such, but I'm not beating myself up for it or nothing.. but I was chewing the skin off of my fingers for a couple of days there.
And, I did learn a lot from all of this - which is always good. Plus, that new 2.3.6 fxz for the folks on leak #1 seems to work well... maybe worth sharing soon, but definitely not for anyone getting the official ota...
Oh, and on another note, I stumbled across this today while browsing the portal news (I had no idea he was going to write this): http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...-notification-toggles-to-your-droid-razr-rom/ - even though he ironically recalls the first leak... "Everything's coming up Milhouse!"
Nice work guys. For those of us on the previous leak what will the steps to upgrade to this leak or the final release be? I have no desire to ever return to gb so flashing back is of no concern to me unless it's the only way to flash forward. I'm guessing someone could make a backup of their Rom and just use the new recovery tool to upgrade to the leak or the official release? Thanks for the updates guys.

My guess would be that youd have to go back to GB before applying any of the newer leaks as we did for the first one. Just not necessary to go back to 2.3.5. These tests were fun but going from my A2 with perfect/amazing wifi signal to my X2 with horrible/sh!tty wifi signal...I'm a bit mad at myself for not waiting and or asking for help. This will be my fourth A2, two being bricks in the last month. Wish me luck when I talk to AT&T...not sure if they'll send me a replacement due to my mother suspending mine n my girlfriends line. But since shes still paying for it monthly youd think they'd still send me another one since I still have insurance on it right? lol, sorry, not meaning to bring this off topic but I'm just tweakin a lil bit n don't know what to expect. Again I'll say it though, thank you for all the hard and dedicated work here man!!!
