Can you browse and talk simultaneously with the myTouch 4G?
In strong 3G and 4G environments, I'm unable to browse the web and talk simultaneously on my MT4G.
This was never a problem on my G1 in 3G settings, oddly enough.
Should I be able to browse and talk at the same time on the MT4G when I have a good 3G or 4G connection?
Has anyone noticed this problem? Any fixes available?
I'm running Ice Glacier 1.1.6.
UPDATE: This dual use is working at the moment. Perhaps I've been in Edge networks or weak 3G for previous attempts.

ANY GSM phone connect to 3G+ connections should be able to talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time.
I have noticed the same issue... hmm was thinking it was a issue with my settings. May have to look into it.

I've personally had mixed results with this... sometimes (in E, 3G and H) i can talk and browse at the same time, sometimes no dice, but anytime I am using the stock Wi-Fi Hotspot all my calls come through and it never breaks my tether.
anyone have any update on this? I can't find anything to fix it.
I recently bumped an old thread from early dec abbot the same issue. It seems many ppl are having the same problem. I too am having mixed results. I will have 3g fine when not in a call, but once I'm in a call, data along with mms function gets killed. However, a few times I moved closer to a window and I would get the 3g icon back. So I can only chalk it up to reception. it seems being on a call somehow effects 3g reception. I don't have a technical explanation for that though.

I had this issue back in late 2009, using a G1 then. TMO was only giving the Orlando area about 800 kbps down, but voice + data should still work. My actual 3g icon would vanish as soon as I got on a call.
TMO opened a ticket to have a field tech check towers, but I never heard anything back.
A coupla weeks later, Orlando had an outage. I went into a TMO store to see what was up and to gripe about the outage. We were given two, free CliqXTs. Shhhh, I said they were GIVEN to us. (and I will stick with HTC devices from here on out.)
Well, same issue. We then put in the NEW SIM, as opposed to using the one I got with my G1 in 2008, voila! My fiancee had the same issue. Swapped her old SIM, voila!
So for me, it was an issue with how the old SIM worked on the network (or didn't work).
Nonetheless, on a GSM network, concurrent voice/data should be possible, so if it's not a matter of just poor coverage in your area, I would go to a TMO store and/or call customer care.

It works for me, even when I use it as a wifi hotspot at Starbucks (Because it's better than their free wifi . I'm able to call and txt and browse the net and receive calls while I am browsing on the laptop. It's very nice IMO
It's weird because it didn't work for me on the stock ROM but it works fine on CM7.
Sent from my DeLorean using a Flux Capacitor
Do you still have a backup of your stock ROM before you went to CM7? If it's "something inside the ROM," then it should be an easy test.
Since the hardware obviously didn't change, it almost sounds like a APN or Mobile Network settings issue. Can you compare your stock to CM7 and see if there's any difference?
Sometimes if you're on a voice call for a while, you'll drop down to 2G. When that happens, your ability to do simultaneous voice and data goes away. If you're mobile data indicator goes away while on a call then this is what's going on. You can verify under the the "Network" part of the "About Phone" screen.
You can mitigate this somewhat by setting your phone to 3G only mode but this can cause it's own set of issues. If your phone wants to move to 2G because of signal quality issues but can't because you have it set to 3G only mode, your call might end up dropping altogether.

So new sim cards solved your issues? Did your data speed/coverage improve at all?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
@Phate - In that particular incident, yes, the new SIM resolved my issue. I had the issue on my G1 and then TMO gave us two free CliqXTs to retain us. We used the same SIMs from our G1s and the issue persisted. I called back in to TMO and they recommended using the new SIMs, as they said they'd seen issues with certain "older" ones.
From that point on, we could browse and talk. Prior to that, you'd see the 3G icon vanish while you were on a call. As soon as you ended the call, the 3G icon would come back.
Our speed then was around 800 kbps down, which isn't blazing fast but it's definitely more than EDGE. Once we got the new SIMs, the speed was still at 800 kbps down in the general Downtown Orlando area (keep in mind, this is early 2010). Over the next few months, the speeds got better and better and then we ultimately ditched our CliqXTs when the Glacier became available.
So in my case, Phate, the SIM resolved our simultaneous voice/data - it did not increase our speed, not explicitly.
Hope this helps!

Nah, service hasn't been bad, was just curious if it would get better. Never followed up on it.
I tried everything I could think of then broke down and went to the store today. The guy restarted the phone insisting that would fix it. Even when I told him I do it all the time. Thats when he blamed it on the custom rom due to the boot animation I have on it. I reassured him that its still the same rom, so he wanted to wipe it. Told him I tried it and no go. I had already told him I just wanted a new sim and he refused to even look at it. So at this point I asked for the manager. First they I told the manager was I could not get data and voice at the same time and I wanted a new sim. He popped the sim card and said it was only a 3g sim (kinda odd cause its a sim from a wing and could get H.)
Long store short he gave me a new sim and it works fine. So make sure you don't let anyone know you have a rooted phone... the idiots like to think thats the reason for all the problems.
With all due respect I wouldn't even walk into a T-mobile store with a rooted phone.
At the bare minimum I would nandroid back to stock rooted rom before going in.

yeah I know... I kinda was just hopping he would look at the sim. Even before he rebooted and found it was rooted he insisted it was something else. Its all good phone works great now!
To all of you having problems with your data stalling out during use, try calling into T-Mobile and make sure they have your correct IMEI code for your device. I called in and updated the IMEI for sister HTC Sensation and the data did not cut out for the 20 minutes I ran the speedtest.net app. The majority of the time it would hang within 2 or 3 minutes of rebooting the phone. I will post back later in this thread for further feedback on if this fixes the problem.
If you call in and discover that you have the wrong IMEI code listed with T-Mobile for your device and you have been having this data issue, please reply back to this thread commenting on this possible "fix".
DEBUGGING GUIDE
1. Verify T-Mobile has your correct IMEI Number
2. Verify T-Mobile has the correct data plan for the Sensation
3. Verify your SIM card is a newer generation SIM for 3G/4G
After making these 3 changes, specifically number 1, data connection has been much more reliable.

If anyone else confirms this works, Ill try it. Im returning this phone so i cant call yet till i get a replacement.
I can confirm this worked for my Vibrant and my G2X. Some T-Mobile reps will say it doesn't matter but it seems like the ones that know what there talking about will say it does matter. With both my Vibrant and G2X, my data worked immediately fallowing a reboot after they added the IMEI to my account.
I switch between T-Mobile phones all the time and never have any data slow down issues. I switch between a MyTouch 4G and my Nexus One, both phones are rooted and both are getting over 5.5 mg download on average in the middle of the day. The MyTouch 4G goes up over 7 mb and the Nexus One usually peeks at about 6.5 mb. The upload speeds are very stable at about 1.6 mb. I never gave my IMEI # to T-Mobile. Just thought I would throw that out there.
I was told that they need to have the correct IMEI code to help them register the phone on the network. So far so good from here....

I think it depends on where you live, what towers your connecting to and what device your using. There is no other explanation as to why my last two devices worked flawlessly after giving them my IMEI#. It's definitely not a coincidence.
Those who want the true answer just keep calling T-Mobile tech support until you find someone who knows what there talking about. (You know what I mean)
My data seems to be working good now since I switch my smartphone data plan to android data plan. I cane from an hd2. Maybe some of the issue came from not having the right data plan.

I've never had any problem using any device with my T-Mobile SIM and data. The T-Mobile system still shows me as having a MyTouch 3g. I've used an HD2, G2, and the Sensation without updating any IMEI information with T-Mobile. Always got great HSDPA/HSPA speeds. This is also using my old $25 MyTouch 3g plan. The data plan shouldn't matter with device or speeds. It might only matter with soft capping. My plan has NO cap.
Just my two cents. Zero connectivity issues with my Sensation and not updating the IMEI.
I contacted T-Mobile and had them verify my IMEI and SIM card numbers were correct. Things ran great for about 10 minutes, and just before I was ready to proclaim the issue fixed...it's back.
This didn't resolve the issue for me, but it doesn't hurt to make sure everything in their system is correct anyway.
im having data issues.. haven't tried the IMEI supposed fix but i also have a sim card thats over 7 years old.. could that really be an issue??
edit: called tmobile.. they checked my imei.. it was correct.. they then told me to get a new sim card just in case because my sim is reallllllly old.. the tech then disconnected my phone from the tower and i left it off with the battery out for about 15 min while i showered.. put it together and turned it on getting 10 consecutive speedtest runs without problems.. hopefully it works.. i will be getting a new sim card too just in case..
they also said chicago was working on their towers for the past 2 days but everything is up and running today.

It could fix it, but at the same time it could not. Its a free fix since your Sensation came with a SIM card, so why not? All it takes is a call to T-Mobile and 10 minutes of your time. Might as well minimize your point of failures.

I had terrible issues with my "4G" hanging. It would fail nearly every time. My sim was from 2008. I grabbed the new sim that came with the sensation and headed to a T-mobile store. They switched over my number to the new sim and for the last 3 hours I haven't had the hang happen once.
Hopefully it fixed the issue!
Edit: issue is back. New sim did not fix the problem!
I just called Tmobile- sure enough there is a specific data plan for the MT4G, and they've switched mine to the Android plan.
They also said that having the Sensation, and being on the MT4G data plan, would cause problems.
Hope this helps......
My sister said in the past 20 hours, data has been significantly more reliable. She said she had minor sluggishness, but I can attribute that to network slowdown in our area. Happens to my sgs too.

I also have a myTouch4g and I do not experience this in this area at all.
I have 1 week left of buyer remorse I might have to return this device.
I got to play with my sisters HTC earlier this even, although the data does not completely cut out, its gets very slow network speeds at times. I used the speedtest.net app and it was getting 2G speeds with a 4G icon. Looks like this phone might be going back to the store soon.
That's me using the old internet2 apn.. Almost twice as fast and less connection issues.. Going to tmobile tomorrow for new sim.. So I'll keep ya posted..

I have an Inspire 4G on H2O Wireless' $60 "Unlimited" (hahaha, Right) Plan and everything was working fine running virtuous affinity, then I flashed coredroid 9 and lost MMS functionality. Error returned is always Unable to send message after multiple attempts - service denied. I have my APNs set exactly as before, even restored a nandroid backup I made before flashing Coredroid but still get same error. SMS works fine just no Picture messages will send or receive. Have spoken to no less than 7 H2O CSRs to no avail. Are the APNs stored on the SIM? Should I replace the SIM? I Just Dunno. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Anyone else have their Inspire on H2O? Thanks
Is your network mode in mobile network settings set to auto? If google sync backed up a different setting it would keep getting set regardless of what Rom you restore.
I have h20 and my mms works just fine. Ill jump on the comp and get the link to the settings I ALWAYS use. They've worked great on any rom I've used.

Yeah, those are what I had set. Thanks for posting that up though, turns out it was something on their end. went through another three calls to India before getting a CSR that I could understand and would listen and do what I told them to do to get it back. The solution was to "Refresh the Account" as they have had to do 6 times in the last two months to bring back Data which drops out at least every week or so.. Thanks again, and btw, how is your data speed?

Yep! That's happened to me about that much too! My speed's not terrible. I usually get pretty close to 3mbps. Never any over that...
Did you see they cut the data limit down for the $60 plan? It was 2gb, now its 1GB!! That's bull****!
That's about what I'm getting in Dallas/Fort Worth too. I saw that it said 1GB+ but I've been using about 2GB per mo. guess I'll see this month as I just recharged on the fourth. One of the reps I spoke with said they are coming out with a new $65 plan that would be "Truly unlimited" for whatever that's worth..lol more Bait and switch probably. It is some major bull**** though, if the inspire supported the 1700Mhz band, my ass would be on Simple Mobile by now. Worst Customer service of ANY company I've ever dealt with.
I've always had good luck with the people I reach. Granted its a minimum 20 minute hold but I guess that's the price you pay. I was using Straight Talk service but their customer service was full of idiotic foreigners but the $45/mo was nice!

Hey guys, I have an Inspire that I have unlocked, rooted, flashed cm7, and run on Straight Talk (ATT sim) all has been working great. Yesterday I installed Tweaker trying to get 3g instead of H+ (data had been working fine, just not 3g like I wanted). The app disabled wifi and verified internet connection, it was still on H+ but it was working, but some time after that I noticed that my data icon was gone. I was out of range for wifi, I checked the settings and mobile network was checked, I usually leave it unchecked unless I need mobile data. I reset my apns back to default, double checked that they were correct. I popped the sim out and stuck it in a go phone I have lying around and it shows a 3g icon, so I dont think Straight Talk is behind it. I called them and the girl said everything looks like it should be working from her end. I restored the stock rom I had backed up before the cm7 flash, still no data. I did another wipe and reloaded my backup from cm7 (everything worked on that backup), still no data. thinking maybe I fried the radio I updated it and the ril. Still no data. I dont know what to do now, ANY IDEAS?
From what I've heard, straight talk dropped at&t so that could explain your problem
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
I have heard that since the new phone unlocking law, ATT is not offering any more sim cards for use with straight talk. ST's website does not mention anything about this, or data dropping out or a change to apn settings because of this. When I first put my ST sim in the phone, before I initially updated my apn settings, I still had a 3g icon on the top of the phone. As of now, I have no data icon on the phone, and the 'mobile data' is checked. Like I said, I put the sim in a different phone and the 3g icon shows up, so it is getting connectivity on that phone, but there is no data connectivity on my Inspire 4g. Even with incorrect apn settings, it would still show connectivity, even though it will no authenticate. I am at a total loss here. What could be the problem with this phone?
Drop your losses of having a 45 a month dollar prepaid at&t plan on straight talk and switch to straight talk T-Mobile but I'm sure all you will get is 2g/edge or you could do what I'm doing. Paying 65 a month on at&t go phone plan with unlimited calls, text and 1gb data plan...I have 3g/4g service

I started off with a tmobile sim from Straight talk, and the coverage SUCKED! And you are right, the data was trash as well. I tried my sim in 2 other phones over the weekend and the 3g icon showed on both. Tried someone else's att sim in my phone and the 3g icon still did not show. For some reason this phone's data modem has taken a dump, I guess, I dont know what the problem is. That's why I came here...
I have no idea what i could be..wish i had the answer for you but i don't...I've personally never heard of that ordeal but sometimes a phones hardware can be faulty after some use...plenty of new phones that come out with hardware problems

Well I got my new phone in and its the same result, NO DATA. I guess I hit my limit with Straight Talk. I called yesterday and talked to a lady, who said I would have to call her back from a different phone, because we may get disconnected while troubleshooting the phone. I told her I didnt have another phone, and asked if she could just call me back if we got disconnected. She said no, that they cannot do that, so I hung up on her. She called me right back to tell me that we had got disconnected and that I need to call back from a different line, lol. So I hung up on her again. My plan renews the first of every month so I think I'll wait until Monday to see if ST turns the data back on.
I'm running the Att straight talk sim with no problems.... Straight talk is throttling the hell out of people in high populated areas that use over 100mb a day and or over 2gb a month but as far as I know they just cut it to dial up speeds not off completely. They pay for a capped amount of data on the Att network therefor if it's reached Att gives straight talk a call saying ur using more then was paid for resulting in throttling. In my small town in South Dakota we don't have that problem because there only like 3 people here that use the sim card and the purchased data for are area is well over what we use I don't use more then 3gb a month but a friend of mine has been getting away with 10+gb a month. I also have a friend in another state that got throttled and took him around 10 calls to get his sim reset.

So i've had the N5 for 4 days now and i just recently switched to Tmobile from Sprint. When im in my house i rarely have more than 1 bar of service and frequently 0 bars. The phone seems to not automatically switch to any other mode (3g/2g). The attached screen shot is only from 4 hours of use, being outside more than inside and still only little blips of green on the mobile network connection log. I work outside and still being outside 8 hours a day still wont have much green on that log.
I dont have another phone from t-mobile to try out but it seems a few people have said that the N5 has radio issues. Not sure if this problem is phone/hardware related?
My data speeds are not the issue here, its more the cell connection for phone calls. My girlfriend has called me many times with my phone laying on the counter when the phone had 1 or 0 bars and it would never ring or show a missed call.
Ive called tmo and they said the towers are good and i that i dont have a "stong" LTE signal but it is "good". I have also went to tmo store and they swapped out the sim card for me, same issue.
The phone i have seems to be the newest batch of N5's with a 401KP serial number and a 01/13/14 manufacture date.
Im super happy with the phone overall but if not being able to receive calls from people is very frustrating and nullifies all the good that this phone has going for it.
Im in the chicago area. Anyone else having this issue?
Any advice/help is appreciated.
See my attachment. I'm on tmo as well. I usually get between 1-4 bars of LTE, yet, it is always yellow. T-Mobile is known to have issues with penetration in buildings. Here in Atlanta it seemed to have gotten way better as of the past few months to where I always have reception and good download speeds. But, there are still areas where when my phone screen is off it likes to go to no signal, and then to 2 bars when I'm using it. Although, they only happens at my gfs parents house. They all have ATT and had to get a signal booster to get service, while sprint barely gets anything there. So I guess it isn't s big deal at all since other carriers struggle more there.

So you are postpaid, If you call in t-mobile and ask if you quality for a signal booster as you do not have good service in home but you do outside.
Certain requirements though to get one you need to live in a single family home and not in a apartment complex the reason is because E911 wont locate you and they cannot dispatch police right away
If you are successful like I did you will get one for free and I also got it 1 day overnight express

They still give it out.. under certain environments for example we have 5 lines and 3 are iPhones and 2 are Nexus 5's
all of them are incapable of wifi calling. so they had to just give one to us..
I also kissed ass to them saying that i love t-mobile but i just wished i had service inside.
the rep transferred me to a lady named Donna, i kissed her ass too and got it shipped 1 day overnight express Lol
overall just be kind and kiss ass

None of mime are WiFi calling capable. I'll call again, but I've also heard from others that they don't five them out anymore. Is it LTE or HSPA?

1)Remember call in state that you have service near your window but you cannot be at a window every time to make a call
2) ask if you quality for a signal booster and when they say if you have any connected walls or shared walls something inbetween those lines state no
3)They're going to do some troubleshooting if you have edge in or 1bar of 4g or LTE TURN ON Airplane mode they're actually going to ping the device state on the mobile network (testing to see if you're a lier)
Tips: Kiss ass, complement things like i love t-mobile etc, be patient and have a nice happy voice, call using another phone NOT on t-mobile..
i hope this helps! :good:

It supports EDGE/HSPA and t-mobile newly refarmed 1900pcs HSPA
its pretty future proof as HSPA will be here long. besides HSPA is what makes the calls not LTE
better to have some data and calls than no calls and data at all..
it also conserves battery life as the signal is strong and your device wont have to search for signals

You said to TURN ON airplane mode when i call them?
Sweet talking is the only way you can get free stuff usually.
I see you have a backup tmobile phone... Does it get the same reception in the house as your N5 does?

Yeah,, you have to be valuable to TMO to get this (ala multiple postpaid lines). The last case I saw here was months ago, and he went all the way to retention before they sent him a cel-fi. Regular CSR's may not have the option on their system.
WRT, HSPA+, use phoneinfo app (market) to toggle GSM-only/LTE settings.

Was he a single line or more than 1 line before being sent to customer retention

IIRC (from Nexus 4 forum), he had two lines, was over $120/mo, and had played CSR roulette trying for a cel-fi. After he said he wanted to cancel (he TRULY had poor coverage at home) and got a hold of retention, he was able to eek one out. Most fora say their cel-fi supply has been drained, however, based on user reports.
The main reason I was following this was for a business client of mine. He's 'last mile' internet, despite dead fiber running down his street less than 20 feet away. He currently pays over $400/mo for ISDN 1.5 synchronous 2yr/contract. Yet, I get over 40MBPS at his location on TMO, outdoors, but drop to near nothing inside his metal buildings. I'm unable to convince him TMO is capable of business-critical uptime, but I think a cel-fi in his window could go a long way towards convincing him.
