myTouch 4G Slide - first impressions - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

Hi all,
(I just joined today - hope you would go easy on me as I am still learning the xda etiquette.)
Just received my T-mobile HTC myTouch 4G slide and activated it on Sunday.
(Now before I jump onto my first impression of the phone, let me be clear - Till Sunday, I was proud owner of Nokia N900. I still love that phone. But I had to jump onto the Android bangwagor sooner or later since Nokia decided to to WinMo way. N900 was a solid phone with an unpolished/unfinished OS. Nokia never gave it a chance to mature.)
So, please keep in mind that I am new to Android as well as HTC and the phone itself.
Here is what I liked in my one full day of playing with the hardware and the OS/Software:
1. Android is fast, stable and polished, and enough apps to install one every day for rest of my life.
2. Phone is fast, not much stutter, has not crashed yet. Data connection is stable and voice quality is good.
3. UI looks, er, shiny (I do not give much weight to this, but apparently, a lot of people do, given popularity of 'certain' phones).
4. Keyboard is good. (one of the main reasons to buy the phone, as querty keyboard is a must for me )
Now onto negatives:
1. Lack of user control - though I have flexibility in controlling a lot of things on Android, there are a lot of other things which I really want to control but can not - i.e. uninstall t-mo / HCT bloatware (see my next point).
2. Bloatware - this was a shock to me. N900 is a clean device with no crap installed. T-Mo and HTC made sure I start hating my phone on day one by giving me pre-installed uninstallable crap. Not only I do not want them, it actually confuses me. I do not have a dedicated media player - but I have a 'Media Room' with T-Mobile TV and Slacker Radio (and none of them are complete versions). Bejeweled 2, T-mo backup, Highlight, Friend Stream - the list goes on, and I can not remove any of the app.
3. Android - no default file manager. Are you kidding me?
4. Contact - multiple entries from multiple sources (i.e. 411 & more is listed 4 times - one from google, one from tmo backup, one from phone and one from sd card). I know I can link them, or disable view of some of them, but god damn it - it's confusing as hell.
5. Camera - now don't get me wrong. The camera on this phone may be one of the best among Android/iphone phones, but where it gives you a lot of megapixels, the lens (and hence the quality) does not hold water against N900. Software can not make up for hardware limitations.
6. Battery - I almost ran out of juice before I even reached home from work in the evening - and that too from very limited use. Yes, I used phone for quite a bit, but without wireless/gps. I understand the display eats battery, but come on - shouldn't a smartphone be up on batter for one full day?
I will add more as I come across.
Please note that this is not a rant - there is some genuine disappointment with my first real hands on with Android/HTC. With the bloatware on this phone, I feel like I am being take advantage off, and I hate that feeling.
I am a linux user for 12 years (personally and professionally - as a programmer) and I consider myself a power-user (though not anywhere near Guru level), and so far, the phone has not given me even a default file browser.
I really hope to find more positive things to say, as I am committed to Android now that there is hardly any other linux-y OS out there.
Thanks
E

I agree. i havent upgraded since the G1.... i was very excited ... and first hands on was huge disapointment. bloatware, yes, and no skype video ...thats an android issue but none the less the phone seemed very unorganized and i was getting a billion messages from all over the internet with the bloatware subrcribing me to every little notification.

All of your problems except for "Camera issues" will be fixed as soon as S-OFF is available, and dev's will begin porting roms and developing roms. I expect overclocking to be tremendous with this dual core processor, since the mytouch 4g can now be clocked to over 2.0 ghz.
*If you want a file manager download astro from the market.
I forgot whether it requires root or not. If that one does, there are many other file managers just search.

Seems like the judgments are extra harsh and could all be solved by software, unrooting, etc. I'm stoked to be able to overclock to 2 GHz and then some. S-OFF on the MT4GS will be awesome!!!

There are many very good free media players/music players on the market (ex. Tinyplayer) . Same with the file managers, Astro is recommended. That's what the market is there for, as they knew dovelopers could provide the device with excellent applications.

Can you confirm if google talk video chat works? I've heard it does not support it even though it's 2.3.4 . Thank you.

It seems you have heard it right.
Apparently, I did not know:
1. Android 2.3.4 enabled voice/video chat for GTalk app.
2. I certainly did not know HTC/T-MO decided to disable it!
Instead, there is Qik Video Chat app from tmo. For some reason, they think it's equivalent to gtalk? *facepalm*
(Now I hope I am wrong, but I have checked all options on GTalk app, and I do not see either video or audio icon next to my contacts, even if they are available to chat on video).
Let me add that to another negative.

Thanks. I know it's pretty new device, and mods/root/s-off will be available soon. That's why I have registered here. I was just giving first impression of the stock device. Yes, I have already downloaded Astro (does not require root). Not much impressed, but gets the job done.

Yes, I know it would get resolved by software/unrooting. That's why I am on this forum. As I said above, these is my first impression of the stock device. And no - I don't think it's harsh at all. Sorry if I came across like that.

Sure there are. But my point is that there are some apps which should come by default on the phone as part of the OS (e.g. Google Search, Contact, Calendar are part of the vanilla Android), and File manager should be at the very top. Anyways, I have already downloaded Astro, and many other apps to play around with it.
I am definitely looking forward to get rid of the software as soon as I can. Otherwise, this baby will have to go back.
Thank you for your comments.

Skype is audio only. No video support.

I moved from a very old android phone so this phone has so far not been able to truly lag on me.
My last phone was regular android even with stock so that is what I wanted. I'm not one to modify my home screen at all. I like the default black 2.3 look and that's what I want. Not Sense.
The fact that I have to void my warranty just to remove it makes me furious. Of course I could bring it back to none rooted state for that. Regardless I think it's hilarious that a bunch of marketing folks think they know better then I do. Heh.
I've made Android apps before and actually code for a living so it's pretty easy to tell that it's a rushed job. The sense front end has no way to disable contact finding so your phone basically becomes facebook and puts contact suggestions directly into your notifications based on your contacts.
Every single "built in" application then requires you to then agree to the terms of service for that specific application. Things like "KidZone", "Highlight", "T-Mobile Mall", "T-Mobile TV". One of the silliest ones is "doubleTwist" which when opened shows you a splash that asks you to click a "Send Email" button which sends you a link to download the app. It then removes itself off the phone. Sounds like malware to me.
So some company payed off Tmo to put this app on my phone so they can harvest my email. Yay.

I'm personally hoping Blah and Sparks port PyroMod to the MT4Gs after root and S-Off are achieved. But that's just me, and I like to add as much memory as possible (A2EXT would certainly enable THAT).
Also, to OP, just wait until root is available and you'll see just how amazing Android can be. I recommend OI File Manager for a default one (this is the one preinstalled on Cyanogenmod-based ROMs). I switched to this one after too many buggy Astro updates and they started with ad-supported versions.

Please. Read the title of the post first.

I just realized something: Why hasn't the hacking/development community made a "status of root update" thread for the Doubleshot the way they did for the Vision? Permaroot and S-OFF are what's really holding me back from getting this device (PyroMod 2.3.5's speedy boot time on the Vision actually DOES rival that of dual-core phones, so I'm in no hurry to get it; I'm just asking why there isn't one).

(ICONS AVAILABLE AT VILLAINROM.co.uk - THANKS MANUP456)
DISCLAIMERS:
1. An SD-EXT partition is required in this ROM (for additional apps), but the ROM itself will NOT install to it. Yey!
2. A ROM shouldn’t brick your phone, unless the “developer” has been foolish enough to include an incorrect radio as part of the installation. That being said, if you somehow manage to brick your phone, Team Villain are in no way responsible. We will, however, give you a tenner for it in the unlikely event of a Desire resembling a housebrick.
3. THERE IS NO CAMERA IN THIS ROM. DO NOT ASK ABOUT THE CAMERA. I actually got this rom semi (more like 1/8) working on the old kernel. I even got it to take a picture, but then it FCd. Then, to my surprise, so did every other application on the phone. I simply don’t have the time just yet to spend on this. Maybe in a week or so I’ll get around to it.
4. If you ask a question that has been answered in this opening post, I tend to get frustrated. It shows an utter lack of respect of the developer, who has spent hours of his personal time creating this ROM for you, then another hour writing up an epic set of release notes, only for a ‘one-post-wonder’ to come along and say ‘WTFOMG – NO CAMERALULZ IN THIZ ROM!!!!!!! WHY???!!!12!.?’. ... so yeah, please don’t do that. Read thoroughly.
5. This is a BETA version. As previously stated, the camera doesn’t work. It will, in time, but it doesn’t right now. There may be a few bugs, so I’d appreciate some solid, usable feedback.
6. VillainROM are awesome. If you don’t believe me, join our IRC channel. The details of which can be found on VillainROM.co.uk, in the General Chat section of the forum. Alternatively, you can use the client built into our website.

So, here it is; 0.2.0. Not exactly a monumentally groundbreaking update, but an update, nonetheless. Reports were flocking in that the Browser wasn’t working on some webpages... so my first mission was to logcat that. It turned out, that in my haste, I seemingly deleted a semi-essential lib file relating to flash-lite. This was preventing sites with even the slightest element of flash to keel over and die quietly like the hare I smashed into with my car last night. Stupid thing. I mean, seriously... what was it thinking? It saw a predator (I came to the conclusion that cars are essentially a form of predator, as far as 50cm tall land mammals are concerned) coming right towards it at 60MPH, and ran TOWARDS it. Not away; not to the side; TOWARDS it. I felt quite terrible for a minute, then I thought to myself; ‘No, I’m not feeling bad. This is the real world after all. Survival of the fittest and all that. Well, it turns out that cars are significantly fitter than over-sized rabbits. Poor thing.
Still... guilt got the better of me. I continued my drive home, feeling a little bit sick as a result of the mental image of a still twitching, roadkilled big-bunny corpse imprinted to the front of my mind.
Where was I? That’s right – the browser. Yeah, so it was a simple fix. A missing lib file. Big deal, I hear you say. Well, luckily, that’s not the best news of the day. The best news of the day by a country mile, is that the outstanding Android ROM developer, Richard Trip has joined the VillainROM team. YES, THAT’S RIGHT – the ORIGINAL and arguably greatest AOSP ROM developer has joined our ever increasing ROMOPOLY (for the non-native English speakers out there, that’s a pun on Monopoly, not roly-poly). Anyway, the point is, we’re using his (and probably will continue to use his) fantastic, OC kernel in this ROM. Welcome to the team, Richard.
God man... get on with it.
So yeah. Browser fixed, flash problem fixed, Full flash added (needs updating from market).... uhmmmm..... I added the original HTC album, and the Gallery 3D will be uploaded as a flashable zip.
THINGS TO COME:
- Flashable .zip which removes HTC lockscreen
- Flashable .zip which adds circle battery mod

Old post info: NOW REDUNDANT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to Supervillain HD 0.1.1 (BETA)
Before we begin: The whole ROM installs to NAND. We don’t need half the system on your SD EXT partition. Woop!
This ROM is based on the latest Desire HD ROM (SENSE 2.0), but with Rosie, and a lot of other crap removed. The ROM is offered in two versions; Launcher Pro and ADW.J
It’s the best of both worlds. All the Sense applications (messaging, dialler, mail, etc – all are far superior to the alternatives), without the slowdown of Rosie and it’s 130mb of additional crap. I’m blowing my own trumpet here, but to me personally, this rom is the ****.
The only let down, of course, is the (lack of) camera, but I’ll get around to that in time.
At last. It’s ready for the public domain.
I can tell you in all honesty that this ROM has been an utter bastard to complete; and by that, I don’t mean that it was born illegitimately out of lawful matrimony. I couldn’t count the hours it’s taken to get to this stage on both hands... I **** you not. First, there was the size. How, I asked myself, do you get a 276mb zip file down to a target size of <150mb, for it to fit on the Nand drive? After all, we don’t want to have to install half the system directory to the SD External partition...
Well, I’ll tell you how.
First, I had to look up and test the necessity of more files than cigarettes I smoke, within the system folder. Libs, apks, images, images within apks... you get it. Many of these have been removed, as is the nature of the SuperVillain series. Those that were lucky enough to remain, have been APK optimised, PNG optimised. Sadly, this didn’t hugely reduce the size. It seems that HTC have, on this occasion, been on the ball and already optimized their apps.
Due to HTC’s strange and bewildering requirement that certain files are seemingly married to others, meant that after I finished deleting, stripping, etc, I was welcomed into the world of boot loops. Boot loop, after bloody boot loop. That’s if I was lucky.
On many occasions, it wouldn’t even load the boot animation, or show up in adb, for that matter. So, I turned to my good old friend, Kmsg. I won’t go into what that is, because if you don’t know right now, you probably have no interest in knowing. Sufficed to say, after several days of stripping files, testing, kmsging, altering files, stripping again, kmsing again, etc etc, it finally did as required, and booted. Yey, it EFFING booted! But that wasn’t to be the end of my woes.
The new HTC IME keyboard seemed to be in love with Laputa. What the hell is this Laputa anyway? Who uses that? I mean... honestly? 25mb’s worth of Laputa related files were bogging up the system, but the HTC keyboard demanded that this mysterious, yet obese thing that is called Laputa remained in place. That annoyed me to such an extent, that I tried other keyboards. IME Mod and stock Vanilla. Guess what... Sense 2.0 didn’t like those, either. Luckily, after a re-base, Laputa fell out with HTC IME, and moved on to pastures new. Laputa, the *****, left IME for another keyboard. Good news for me though... BYE BYE LAPUTA, WELCOME BACK NEW HTC IME KEYBOARD! Not that I use it myself; I’m a big fan of Swiftkey, personally.
I was so overjoyed, I could have cried like Louis Walsh at Gamu Nhengi’s beautiful rendition of ‘To make you feel my love’. It’s a farce that she went out of the competition by the way... but that’s another story entirely.
So. The ROM booted, and the keyboard worked without the love of its clingy ex, Laputa. All good.
Things were finally looking up!
Then came the images. Such a simple part of the process generally. Open up the framework-res.apk, locate the Default Wallpaper, and simply copy over it with the new, SuperVillainHD wallpaper. Oh no... not in Sense2.0. We’ll have a total of 4 folders, buried all over the place, each with their very own Default_wallpaper.jpg. Whatever, HTC... I love you, but at the same time, I really, really hate you.
I won’t go into what happened next, as another 6 hours of ‘trial and error’ in an attempt to speed up the ROM further, finally succeeded. What you see before you is the FINAL BETA version, and a base in which I can build upon and improve.

Absolutely fantastic news! I rooted my phone just a week ago and the first (and only) custom rom I've tried so far is your SuperVillainROM. And it's in every way superior to the stock HTC Sense.
I'll have to give this a try when I get the time for it. Thanks for your hard work, it's truly appreciated

regarding the serious problems the Altek Leo has, as no google apps, not even market, no rooting published, no adobe flash, firefox will not install and so on,
a section would be useful for the distessed owners of this camera phone which
is more a fumble phone than a smart phone. Its advantages are a very good lens, an outstanding CCD chip, a xenon flash and professional camera software.
True, is buggy
I bought one actually and despite it being pretty buggy, I just absolutely love the camera.
Definitely needs some software love though:
1) Interface is pretty sluggish and 2.1 isn't helping, the latest android performance improvements would be nice.
2) Touch-screen is strangely inaccurate. Swype was a must for me.
3) Battery life is pretty bad (not certain how much a newer Android would help, but any amount of powersaving fixes would help).
4) Buttons/widgets to lock the screen (e.g. Extended Controls) don't work.
5) The camera button doesn't open the camera when the phone is locked (debatable I guess, but imo, the camera button should just open the camera, period).
6) Default alarm clock doesn't ring randomly.
7) Not to mention apps randomly crashing, strange animation bugs in the Album viewer, no google apps, terrible GPS, etc.
But despite those, I've managed to work my way round them and am in love with it.
Alex
I have one of these and I do like the quirkyness .
I would love to improve the experience by modding.
Quirkyness fits well
To continue the list (more than enough for a forum)
- Backups by Titanium, AVG or Nandroid do not work because i have no idea
how to root the Altek Leo.
- WLAN range is still very short and does not always an automatic reconnect.
- I could not manage to make any browser play flash files, but the moboplayer
plays flv files well.
- Apps like soundhound say the microphone is blocked.
About half of the apps i need are not available because they will not install
or they are exclusively available over google market and getting them from
file hosters seems a bit risky to me. Most of this problems seem to be caused
by the small software space of 120 MB for files and 83 MB for running
applications.
But i will keep the Altek Leo and use it because the camera prooved itself
as outstanding among mobile phones.
- I use the application stores Applanet, Amazone Appstore, Handango,
SlideMe SAM and the tools Memory Booster Lite, Android Tweak.
Does anyone discovered any other useful helpers for this half of an
ANDROID device ?
"We do not need any adobe flash, we have got a real xenon flash."
Where To Buy
Does anyone know where to pick up/order one of these units?
Here To Buy
Search at Ebay, you will need a Paypal account.
I bought mine from Wifigadget.
Eason of Yupitek provides International Customer Service,
have a look at the facebook pinwall.
Thanks for the tips! Really like Memory Booster and Swype.
If you're on a mac, the "missing sync" from markspace is well worth the buy - particularly given that there does not seem to be a way to add a Google account under accounts and sync - it's missing on my altek leo! Anyone elses too?
Also recommend "Lookout" if you're worried about virus from no easy way to get apks other than file sharing sites.
Despite the quirks, very happy with this all-in-one device - music player + phone + camera - 3 down to 1! Fantastic!
Vignette
Sidenote, 'Vignette' is the perfect app for this device.
It doesn't fix any of the quirkiness, but it's a photo manipulation tool which complements the fantastic camera perfectly.
You can take your pics and then touch them up making the phone a studio for all things photography.
You can purchase it from the AndAppStore.
By poor battery life, how many days do you get out of it?
root and market
Has anyone tried the Gingerbreak exploit? I heard it might work on older devices. Also, if you don't trust file sharing sites and want stuff from the market. You could try running an emulator and installing the Market on that, then sideloading the APKs. I haven't tried it myself yet, but it seems there are a lot of people doing this. Here's one HOWTO which is specific to Mac but I think it's prety much the same or at least you should be able to use the same system image. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1387830/how-to-install-android-market-app-on-the-emulator there are lots of other links if you google "android market emulator" I don't have the Leo yet because they're sold out in Taiwan, but I've got mine on order. I'm most interested whether the google apps work at all if they're sideloaded. I've just sort of bricked my older Cyanogen device. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Oh, here's a Windows specific link - http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/10004/accessing-android-market-from-android-sdk/
and be careful with Gingerbreak!
There's also UniversalAndRoot to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
and SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Poor battery-life
@rocky7st
It depends on usage. Light usage is ok. Any sort of medium/heavy usage won't get you through the day.
I bought it from an ebay seller which sent me 2 batteries which was helpful:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230614421067
It's is useful since it allows me to occasionally geek out with the camera, playing with apps or using the GPS (i.e. 2 hours straight) and and it'll completely run out of juice by late afternoon.
I usually wait till I get home to recharge it on those occasions, but it's been very useful to be able to switch to the backup battery if I'm out and about and I really need to use the phone.
@everyone_else
On the topic of side-loading apps, my gf has an Android phone with a market on it, so I use the "Astro" file manager which allows you to "Backup" the apks, and then I transfer them to my phone via email.
I've been unable to get my device to show up with adb, so not far enough to try SuperOneClick.
UniversalAndRoot says something like "unable to root"
Z4Root says "running root exploit" and does not progress..
That's bad news but good to know at the same time. Hopefully there will be a method soon. Still waiting on mine but I unbricked my older one. Seems to be an almost total lack of hands-on reviews (outside of a trade show) so I thought someone might be interested in this one. Also, I emailed the author to see whether and how he installed the Market app.
http://120x160.com/old-entries/216-hardware-review-altek-leo-a14-camera-phone
Cheers for the reply jackflap. Do you guys know anything about the Android 2.2 upgrade, I've heard Altek is meant to be releasing it next month.
Okay, I got SuperOneClick working so I have root. ADB worked in windows after installing the Altek software.
ADB in linux still cannot find the phone..
So I tried installing various vending.apk files but keep getting MISSING SHARED LIBRARY or out of date SDK.
@daktak I've been trying to develop for the Leo but have not been able to get ADB to work in windows. Where did you obtain the Altek software?
Hi All,
I am a complete noob here and non technical.
Recently bought an altek leo with the sole purpose of loading an app called Passport Photo Plus and using the device to create passport photopgraphs and to send by Bluetooth to a compatible printer.
We have been doing this on other android smartphones but wanted to use the altek due to its camera features.
It appears that our desired app is ony avaiable on Market.
Being non -technical we have tried and failed to find a way to install this app on our leo.
I'm sure there may be other apps available but we specifically want this one due to it's features.
Does anybody know if this can be done, and if so how? Can anybody point me in the right direction (in easy to understand non tech terms please!)
Would happily pay a small fee for succesful step by step instructions (not sure if I can post that here, if not please ignore / mods pls delete).
Many thanks in advance.

[ROM][ALPHA]Honeycomb - OG Droid

THIS ROM IS STILL IN THE ALPHA STAGES!!!!
Here's where you can download the most recent version:
Honeycomb Alpha V0.5.8
Very few things work in this rom, but for good measure here's the list of things that DO NOT work:
Data
Camera
SDCard
Gps
Calls
Battery Status
[ALT] and (hardware) key
Screen Colors (red=blue/blue=red)
App FCs
Original Honeycomb port for the OG Droid thread started by R2doesInc:
Here
======> I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR PORTING HONECOMB TO THE OG DROID
I've put a lot of time and effort into trying to modify R2doesInc's version of HC to function better on the OG droid. There are a lot of problems and I have a small understanding of that I need to edit or replace to get some of them working, but as anyone who knows anything about computers, partial wont work. If anyone is interested in helping, please post here or shoot me a PM.

There was never really a problem to begin with. All you have to do is touch anywhere you can type,

Its a nifty function to switch between which keyboard you want to use

I have my gf's old inactive Droid to play with, and I want to make it into a media device (wifi internet, mp3, games, etc) so this would be perfect for what I want to do with it. I would be more than willing to donate for an operational HC port to this tired, but still good, old device. All I would need is wifi, charging, and usb/pc connectivity. The rest is bonus.
Edit:
On a side note, I don't have much/any real experience with Android development, but I do have some knowledge of programming. I downloaded the SDK and other develpment items a while ago to try, but didnt dive in much. If you would be willing to work with a newb, I would be more than happy to give a bit of time to the cause...

I'm currently working on the USB interface and let me tell you, its a tough nut to crack. I've done some research on it and it seems that there is some bad news (possible delays for a HC USB patch) and some good news (a glimmer of hope in the fact that some other devices have gotten USB functionality). I'm still looking into it, but for now, the only things that I know need to me modified/replaced are '/system/etc/vold.fstab' and '/system/bin/vold'. If there are any other files that I may need to edit or add, anyone, please let me know.
As for the donation part, I don't really deserve donations for what I'm doing. R2doesInc is the one that did all of the work in porting this to the OG Droid. All I'm doing is modifying it to give it more functionality.

I don't mind working with a 'newb' as I too am a newb to the development of roms. I've already learned a lot about working with roms and editing files since I fully dove into working on this. What I need you to do is PM me and I'll give you a basic run down of what I've done (so you can have the same changes made to your copy of OMHC), some notes on what files I've worked with and a list of files that I know of that are connected to each problem. Who knows, by the end of this project we may both be considered devs.
What you need to do is go the R2doesInc's original thread (link in the first post) and follow a link on his page to download the OMHC_Sholes.zip found on his development website. I've emailed him to see if he is willing to help with programming, script writing or advice on how to get some of the functions to work and I'm currently awaiting his reply.
EDIT - The BOLD statement above is no longer true. I have the most recent version linked in the first post. NO ONE HAS TO DO ANY MODDING TO THE ROM TO HAVE THE FUNCTIONS I HAVE ADDED
While it's nice to see forum members contributing to the poll I've attached to this, why don't we get some conversation rolling on this subject. I understand that this idea is a little far-fetched, but with some support and ideas, this could be more functional.
I'm really putting all of the extra time I've got into this (It's not much and I'm currently cutting into my sleep schedule A LOT), but I can't really get anywhere without the help of some experienced or semi-experienced advice. If you have any knowledge of what files are needed for some of the above problems to function, then please post with some advice. The same goes for editing those files.
I'm not a dev, but I'd like to have a more in depth knowledge of how to modify roms from the ground up.
i wish i could give a little bit of help, but i have no idea what i would be doing on the dev side. but i agree, the D1 community is dead. the only thing i could help with is trying to post something on droidforums.com because i think that that site is more active with D1 people. hopefully that helps out a little, but i wish you the best of luck bro and i will be one of the first ones downloading it once its gets stable, i have been waiting for honeycomb for a while. so ill help by giving feedback then.
That would be great, feel free to put a link to this page there if that's allowed. Any dev that could help would be welcomed with open arms
Fixed A Problem
UPDATE - Alpha V0.2
Superuser permissions added
Its the old style and you may have to back out to the home screen (press home soft key in the bottom left of the screen or by pressing search and then the back soft key), but it works. I've been able to use rom manager to reboot into recovery and give Set CPU root access (even though the darn thing FCs after any attempt to change the CPU speeds.
I'm on the D2, but it would be great to see some development for honeycomb, because it seems like once it gets onto one device working well, it spreads like a disease (a good disease... like... something good that spreads like a disease ahaha). The development at droidforums tends to be semi-alive for the OG Droid, though, because I see new posts there almost daily. I'm sure the community would love to help, since there seems to be a pretty solid core of OGD developers there!

Honeycomb would definitely be a great disease to have spreading around. From what I understand the ZTE Blade and the HTC HD2 are the two phones with the most features enabled from HC. Most others are basically in the same boat as the OG Droid.
I'm still digging around a lot to see if I can find anything else to get to work. I'm still having a lot of problems getting the SD Card to mount. The most frustrating things is while running the HC rom, I can enable USB debugging, but my computer (no matter what program I'm using) doesn't recognize my phone. I'll jump between droidforums and here to see about getting anything working.
---UPDATE FOR ROM---
Ok, so this isn't actually anything big. I installed rzr recovery on my phone and used it to overclock my phone to 1100MHz. The rom runs a lot smoother with the overclock, but there's still a lot of lag. I still need to figure out how to make the Hardware accel work.
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS RECOVERY. IT WAS INTENDED FOR RZ ROMS AND MAY NOT LOAD YOUR BACKUPS CORRECTLY!!!
I've also noticed that some apps like to FC when trying to perform certain functions. Maybe because they're not for HC, but I'll be looking into it. Also, I've been kind of ignoring a problem with coloring because Its not all that important, but I'm adding it to the "to do" list
This is great. Keep up the good work friend!

Update - Minor Thread tweaking
I cut out all of the fat and renamed the thread. Also added a link to download Alpha V0.2
I'm still looking for somewhat experienced devs to take a look under the hood and try to help out. Anyone who would like to test the rom can now that I've uploaded it to the web.
Please, PLEASE remember that this rom is still in alpha stages and needs a lot of work or overseeing from an experienced dev. If you notice any problems that are not listed on the main page, please let me know so I can add it to the "to do" list.
Sorry for the delay in a response, Mastur. I have a 7 week old and a new house as well as working nights, so its been short on free time. I will get you a PM tomorrow and try to give you a hand from there. Thanks!
No worries man. I've been hard at work, but I still need help with this. My friend is familiar with xml and html but not with the android OS. So I don't know how much help he'll be. I don't know anyone familiar with java, but I'm not sure how important that really is...
HUGE update coming a little later! A lot of work finished and screen shots uploaded
EDIT - Update's in!!!! The link to the new alpha of Honeycomb is in the first post. Happy downloading =)
thanks man this is pretty cool
Updated link in first post. Better hardware acceleration, still not perfect

[Discussion] What rom are you running? 2018 edition

Hey guys, I own a Photon Q and plan on buying another for parts as mine got scratched up bad on a recent hike. i was playing around with other roms and thought I'd start a discussion thread for the few people still rocking the best QWERTY phone ever made.
My setup:
Sailfish OS 2.1.3.7 (need to update to 2.1.4.14 soon)
Rainbow backlight
Sim modded obviously
It's fast, stable, and the battery life on Sailfish is easily double what I got on CM11 or even CM10.2
What other roms have I used?
LOS14.1 - Fast and lot's of fun, but the battery life was just garbage. Battery life was my only complaint, 15% gone in 30 minutes? REALLY?
CM11 - Fast but again, bad battery life.
CM12.1 - Oddly really slow compared to the above two but the battery life was meh, I blame different default clock speeds
CM10.2 - the best android rom. Decent Speed, decent battery life. Only issue is, you know, it's android 4.3.1, I prefer ICS over JB and wish CM9 was available.
Sailfish OS - of course, my favorite. Its super fast, and the battery is at 78% at the end of the day for me. It's something you just need to try for yourself. If you don't mind losing android app support make the switch you won't regret it.
What are you guys using? what tweaks? what rom? what hardware mods? what new phones/old phones are you looking at?
The Best rom for the PQ is still the Jelly bean PacMan.
Whatever, given my actual SIM has troubles with it, I'm using the LineageOS Marshmallow release, moddedd to use the micro G instead of a ton of google crap.
Speaking of microG, looks like almost no one is aware that we have a ready to go nougat rom built for the PQ, since December 2017
https://download.lineage.microg.org/xt897/
P.S.
About battery life, it's my last problem since my Photons (and Droid 4) are all modded to 2600 or 3000mA/h batteries.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/photon-q-4g-lte/general/real-2600mah-battery-mod-t3308399
A mod too cheap and too easy to accomplish to stay with stock batteries (possibly exhausted ones, even if bought brand new, given the 6 years timeframe)
I'm running Lineage 14.1 and for me it's really slow lately, along with the poor battery life. I recently wiped and started fresh and only installed minimum things I use, but can't even play solitare now without it lagging.
In the past I've ran everything starting with CM11, 12 and 13. There was a carbon ROM I ran once when CM updates were stalled on our device but can't remember which OTMH. I never ran stock or CM10 so no experience with Jellybean or what limitations it might have.
I'd consider sailfish but there are two apps I kinda rely on, google hangouts/dialer (for google voice), and accession (an app that works with my home voip phone # that is included with my internet subscription) and although I've never looked for sailfish apps, I doubt they have em...
Never heard of MicroG, time to read...

The best you can expect from it is a 1780mA battery in a good state, that may be an improvement over a "tired" old stock one, but most likely you will get a stock battery folded in a shiny gold sticker.
The soldering iron is not that important, a bit of soldering skill and manuality is.
Nothing dramatic given we are talking of just 4 soldering point, far easier than the ones needed to SIM mod the phone
You can get a cheap soldering iron good enough for the purpose for 10€ or so, and you can get a LG battery for a similar price (and you can get them locally to avoid the import fees).
But you can't buy the skill, better to ask to a local technician if you feel the job too complicate for you.

this is way over my head. I know how but I don't feel like buying a soldering iron and a bunch of batteries.
Battery life is fine in sailfish, ~70-80% end of day with data and wifi on and occasional usage checking the time and texting and browsing image boards and stuff.

Well Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat can be even faster than ICS or JB (often way faster), especially if you install them on F2FS.
What makes the phone really slow are two things:
#1 Google recent services (just use the microG)
Current "Pico" Gapps .zip = 129MB,
MicroG + Fdroid store .zip = 5.8MB
MicroG + Google Playstore .zip = 29MB
#2 Recent pointlessly bloated apps.
No one force you to use, (say) the last version of facebook AND messenger, just use Aptoide to "downgrade" them to a decent version.
The last time I checked Facebook v 1.xxx was still doing the same job as the latest FB + Messenger apps (a better job being not split over 2 apps).
But FB 1.xx was 4MB or so, the latest FB+ Messenger are something like 72+48 MB (!!!).
The same is applicable to almost every app
In short don't be fool, use what you need and what fits your needs, not what google/fb/whatever wants.

Obviously that's matter of personal preferences, and depends on the status of the old battery. If it's good enough it's good enough.

Frankly being an old Maemo user I had high hopes in sailfish, but when I tested it briefly I didn't like it that much. A thing that I especially missed was a decent browser doing a good text wrap/reflow.
Google genius managed to remove it in Android as well, since KitKat, but on android there are very good alternatives Opera, Yandex, HTC Internet, and other choices like Dolphin (until MM), Firefox + addons and so on.
What's the Sailfish status in that area?

I have data as F2FS as CM didn't support f2fs system back when I first did that. Just now I rebooted to TWRP and reformatted cache as F2FS as that seemed safe and easy. Do current versions of LOS support F2FS system too? If so how to do system, format then reflash?
I looked into MicroG this afternoon. No hangouts/dialer support, and that's a must-have for me as I use google voice as primary contact number, I don't even know my real cell #s. Woulda been nice to try tho, kinda like Sailfish!
I have very few apps installed, certainly no facebook or any social media anything besides hangouts, can't really think of anything to downgrade. Ah well.

There is also a PQ KitKat ROM with backported F2FS support.
To get full advantage of it you should have both /data and /cache partitions on f2fs.
So do a nandroid backup of your data partition, then reformat it, then restore.
Keep in mind that your "internal SD" is just a subfolder of /data, so you need to backup your data inside it as well, or just move temporarily them to the external SD
There is no point on formatting /system given it's mostly static, and also given the rom installer will reformat it to ext4 anyway.
I looked into MicroG this afternoon. No hangouts/dialer support, and that's a must-have for me as I use google voice as primary contact number, I don't even know my real cell #s. Woulda been nice to try tho, kinda like Sailfish!

I don't have google voice on my phone since the days of Milestone 1, which come with a good internal voice recognizing app, small, local and effective (I think it still works)
By the way, although the idea is to get rid of most of the original Gapps as possible, most of them still works on properly patched microG phones, I have no idea if Hangouts is included in that list, never used it in my life.

As I mentioned, in my case, data was already f2fs and I just did cache. Sounds like still no support for system. So I'm set, thanks.
I already searched about hangouts and microG, no dice, read several posts including recent ones, people wanting it for google voice no luck. there is some limited support for some IMs but anyways I need full incoming calls and dialer.

System is basically a read only partition that changes only when you install a new rom, a zip from TWRP, or when you use a root file explorer to change somthing.
No writes = no need for a smarter FS.
That said I believe that, if you backup your system partition then you restore it on FSFS, it will work. The kernel supports it and I don't think it's "racist" about the partition involved.
Just there is no point in doing that, minimal (if any) improvements, v.s. possible troubles.

Ok.
But even on a Gapp Based ROM is still a pleasure to use Yalp over the Playstore.
When the resources are limited, anything that can be removed/replaced by a leaner version helps to improve the responsiveness.
The Solutor said:
Well Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat can be even faster than ICS or JB (often way faster), especially if you install them on F2FS.
What makes the phone really slow are two things:
#1 Google recent services (just use the microG)
Current "Pico" Gapps .zip = 129MB,
MicroG + Fdroid store .zip = 5.8MB
MicroG + Google Playstore .zip = 29MB
Stock browser is stock browser : (
I don't mind it and most people don;t, but the next best thing is webcat, which is basically the same thing.

What's the Sailfish status in that area?

honestly? The browser is what you get, that's it : (
The issue (for you atleast) is that most people, myself included, don't mind the stock browser enough to develop a new application. webcat is the only alternative and event then it is basically an even more barebones version of the stock firefox based browser. I notice the bad text wrapping too, but to be honest the benefits outweigh the consequences of using Sailfish in my opinion, but if you have the battery mod, you don't really need to run it unless you hate android's UI (like me). granted I loved holo ICS, but anything after or before 4.0.x I didn't like much, especially compared to sailfish.

Frankly If it was for my I was still using Gingerbread, Surely its UI was not silky and refined like the new iterations, but the UX was light years better than anything that came later.

Back to the browser, I feel incredible that I was able to have a good mobile experience using my P800 (which is the very first real smartphone, from 2002) or even a micro phone like the siemens SL-55 with its stamp sized display, while I couldn't get the same, in the AD2018, on a brand new smartphone, which has hundreds of times the power and the memory of them.
I feel just retarded that google moved the setting menu on the top left corner, just when the display started to become surf board sized, and i could continue for a day...
I feel completely crazy how most users decided to back any idiotic idea spooned to them by the big brothers. Starting from the terminology.
Think to "Sideloading"... seriously ?
Installing a program on my device, possibly a program written and compiled by myself is SIDE loading ? ?
I couldn't think to anything more "straight" and less "side" than that.
In short I try to limit the damage exactly like you do, then we give different value to different aspects of the device usage. Which is normal and human.
The point is not how we try to fix a problem, the point is that nowadays most people doesn't even realize that there is a problem to solve.:crying:

Question Non Rooted Pixel 7 Pro

Okay Ive had some time using this phone and came to a conclusion, I don't need root on this phone.
Now of course root gives us the power but I have found some applications and a few workarounds to get the best overall performance on this Pixel 7 Pro.
1.Shizuku apk.
This app is sorta like a su app with of course no system level privileges.
(I use this app for ,Better Internet Tiles,
Carrier Vanity Name and Dar Q ..)
2.Package Disabler apk.
This app can debloat most apps.
3.System UI Turner apk.
This app can enable and disable hidden features within the ROM.
4. My new favorite non rooted app that can lock the CPU frequencies.
Max All CPU (non root) apk.
This app actually works which shocked me.!!
5.Adguard apk.
So basically having a pixel device has been the same experience as my rooted devices running pixel experience roms.
Of course better screen (AMOLED) wireless charging and IP68 rating etc...
In a nut shell one can enjoy this device without root.
Please list applications or adb commands or anything that can improve the overall performance of the pixel without root..
Thanks..

What you're asking is nearly impossible. You can disable some apps, but installing more will just slow down your device. There are no ADB commands that will "improve performance" either.

I can't speak to ADB commands (I doubt there's any, i figure OP's asking for "special commands" that gain some special access to change a particular setting), I think what OP is going for is methods/apps like Greenify -- which is debatable because, as I understand it, Android OS does a whole caching or keeping apps in a low background state as to not use up more power & resources to start them back up again; I only ever seen it discussed when users discuss the merits of "closing all apps" (also discussed on iphones) and/or how it is different than "closing programs" in Windows (this might've been a different case on older versions of Android [as I recall finding it necessary to do such methods on my Motorola Droids {1,3,4}])...
But agreed, without root access, what can be done is so limiting that it's hardly going to make a noticeable difference. if anything, one must trust Android OS developers that they're making the most out of resources ("under the hood") and not wasting them...
Interesting!
Debloat via windows cpu using :
(UAD) Universal Android Debloater, works on Android 14 beta 3.1 in case anyone is curious..
I've noticed less battery drain when i uninstalled google calander,vzw.apn.lib, digital wellbeing, YouTube music, Gmail, and few others..

Of course, when u disable more app, more battery gain. But then, what do u use your phone for? (Uninstall calendar, Gmail?)

4ADatabase setedit mod that has my pixel 7 pro flying and with no overheating.
Running this mod on android 14 beta 3.1..
I saw this mod in a thread somewhere that works without root just the app.
My cpu clock speeds are now stable and don't fluctuate like I'm used to on a rooted phone that i would max out my cores for best performance
.
See my pics.. This phone really needs no root or custom rom
..I need all my banking apps , hold for me and all stock pixel exclusives...
Happy modding without root..

I really appreciate your informations. Anyway the way you tell everbody "you dont need root" is patronizing. People root for many reasons. And its a lot easier to play around with mods if you have root. I never had problems with root since the first Android Phone.

No noticeable difference.. I spent 3 hours on calls, took some video shots, watched about 1 hour of YouTube, used Android Auto and maps while driving down the coast for about an hour.
Came home about 6 hours later still had %65 left in the can.... Battery life has always been good even on A13..

Patronising. lol
I guess one only reads and gravitates to one subject.
I've been rooting, building, baking roms ,flashing etc..since 2009.. This phone is the only phone that I've owned that I've never rooted ..I repeat 14 years of android modding and this phone makes me not want to root it ..
Why does that bother you?
Don't answer I know why..
Lastly, Those of us who are enlighten know something.
Ill throw one bone for your everyone roots for various reasons post
Theres 5 main factors why one roots per national surveys and repetitions.
1.Bloatware/crapware removal
2.Modders/Devs love to tinker and are just enthusiast..(Love That)
3.Google haters. (Micro G lovers) Some hate the Google advertisement practices, Google is an advertisment company remember that part.
4.Hackers, enough said on that..
5.Ability to customize there device to ones own liking..
Many more but you know that already..
So what have we learned today class?

"Why does that bother you?" Nothing you mentioned above bothers me, its your attitude.
"Lastly, Those of us who are enlighten know something." -> Attitude
"So what have we learned today class? " That i am right about you and your attitude.
And yes this is highly subjective and just like your tips about not rooting you maybe take a thing out of my critics.
You should put a tutorial together for the devices that are bootloader locked or just do not want to root. Good information here
Enabled (VONR ) Voice Over New Radio=5G
I've read many pixel users say that phone reception is not that good.
Being on Verizon wireless towers i have no dropped calls and calls are super clear with the clear calling option enabled in settings.
This app( pixelIMS.apk ) enables VOLTE, VONR,apn option to add can be enabled although its blocked on spectrum so i still cant edit my apns..and a few other features.
Give credits to the developer of this app on GitHub..
App requires shikuku or root..
NFC works on Beta 14 _3.1
Tested it on a train and made a google pay purchase at the store. Even worked with my bulky case on.
