[ROM][ALPHA]Honeycomb - OG Droid - Motorola Droid Android Development

THIS ROM IS STILL IN THE ALPHA STAGES!!!!
Here's where you can download the most recent version:
Honeycomb Alpha V0.5.8
Very few things work in this rom, but for good measure here's the list of things that DO NOT work:
Data
Camera
SDCard
Gps
Calls
Battery Status
[ALT] and (hardware) key
Screen Colors (red=blue/blue=red)
App FCs
Original Honeycomb port for the OG Droid thread started by R2doesInc:

======> I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR PORTING HONECOMB TO THE OG DROID
I've put a lot of time and effort into trying to modify R2doesInc's version of HC to function better on the OG droid. There are a lot of problems and I have a small understanding of that I need to edit or replace to get some of them working, but as anyone who knows anything about computers, partial wont work. If anyone is interested in helping, please post here or shoot me a PM.

Hardware Acceleration (KIND OF)
The rom has much less lag now, after adding some files from Cyanogenmod Nightly 175
Auto Rotation (KIND OF)
You have to slide open the phone, and a lot of things are kind of chopped off
but it works
[Shift] Hardware Key
You have to hold it and then hit the key that you want,
but it works

Fixed the Hardware Buttons:
Modified "/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl" to include functions for the power, volume and camera keys.
-On Screen Keyboard Solution found-
There was never really a problem to begin with. All you have to do is touch anywhere you can type,
when you do an icon will appear next to the time. Press it and turn off the hardware keyboard.
Its a nifty function to switch between which keyboard you want to use
(especially since i couldn't fix the [ALT] key the same way I fixed the hardware keys).

Keep up the good work!
I have my gf's old inactive Droid to play with, and I want to make it into a media device (wifi internet, mp3, games, etc) so this would be perfect for what I want to do with it. I would be more than willing to donate for an operational HC port to this tired, but still good, old device. All I would need is wifi, charging, and usb/pc connectivity. The rest is bonus.
Edit:
On a side note, I don't have much/any real experience with Android development, but I do have some knowledge of programming. I downloaded the SDK and other develpment items a while ago to try, but didnt dive in much. If you would be willing to work with a newb, I would be more than happy to give a bit of time to the cause...

I'm currently working on the USB interface and let me tell you, its a tough nut to crack. I've done some research on it and it seems that there is some bad news (possible delays for a HC USB patch) and some good news (a glimmer of hope in the fact that some other devices have gotten USB functionality). I'm still looking into it, but for now, the only things that I know need to me modified/replaced are '/system/etc/vold.fstab' and '/system/bin/vold'. If there are any other files that I may need to edit or add, anyone, please let me know.
As for the donation part, I don't really deserve donations for what I'm doing. R2doesInc is the one that did all of the work in porting this to the OG Droid. All I'm doing is modifying it to give it more functionality.

I don't mind working with a 'newb' as I too am a newb to the development of roms. I've already learned a lot about working with roms and editing files since I fully dove into working on this. What I need you to do is PM me and I'll give you a basic run down of what I've done (so you can have the same changes made to your copy of OMHC), some notes on what files I've worked with and a list of files that I know of that are connected to each problem. Who knows, by the end of this project we may both be considered devs.
What you need to do is go the R2doesInc's original thread (link in the first post) and follow a link on his page to download the OMHC_Sholes.zip found on his development website. I've emailed him to see if he is willing to help with programming, script writing or advice on how to get some of the functions to work and I'm currently awaiting his reply.
EDIT - The BOLD statement above is no longer true. I have the most recent version linked in the first post. NO ONE HAS TO DO ANY MODDING TO THE ROM TO HAVE THE FUNCTIONS I HAVE ADDED

While it's nice to see forum members contributing to the poll I've attached to this, why don't we get some conversation rolling on this subject. I understand that this idea is a little far-fetched, but with some support and ideas, this could be more functional.
I'm really putting all of the extra time I've got into this (It's not much and I'm currently cutting into my sleep schedule A LOT), but I can't really get anywhere without the help of some experienced or semi-experienced advice. If you have any knowledge of what files are needed for some of the above problems to function, then please post with some advice. The same goes for editing those files.
I'm not a dev, but I'd like to have a more in depth knowledge of how to modify roms from the ground up.

i wish i could give a little bit of help, but i have no idea what i would be doing on the dev side. but i agree, the D1 community is dead. the only thing i could help with is trying to post something on droidforums.com because i think that that site is more active with D1 people. hopefully that helps out a little, but i wish you the best of luck bro and i will be one of the first ones downloading it once its gets stable, i have been waiting for honeycomb for a while. so ill help by giving feedback then.

That would be great, feel free to put a link to this page there if that's allowed. Any dev that could help would be welcomed with open arms

Fixed A Problem
UPDATE - Alpha V0.2
Superuser permissions added
Its the old style and you may have to back out to the home screen (press home soft key in the bottom left of the screen or by pressing search and then the back soft key), but it works. I've been able to use rom manager to reboot into recovery and give Set CPU root access (even though the darn thing FCs after any attempt to change the CPU speeds.

I'm on the D2, but it would be great to see some development for honeycomb, because it seems like once it gets onto one device working well, it spreads like a disease (a good disease... like... something good that spreads like a disease ahaha). The development at droidforums tends to be semi-alive for the OG Droid, though, because I see new posts there almost daily. I'm sure the community would love to help, since there seems to be a pretty solid core of OGD developers there!

Honeycomb would definitely be a great disease to have spreading around. From what I understand the ZTE Blade and the HTC HD2 are the two phones with the most features enabled from HC. Most others are basically in the same boat as the OG Droid.
I'm still digging around a lot to see if I can find anything else to get to work. I'm still having a lot of problems getting the SD Card to mount. The most frustrating things is while running the HC rom, I can enable USB debugging, but my computer (no matter what program I'm using) doesn't recognize my phone. I'll jump between droidforums and here to see about getting anything working.
---UPDATE FOR ROM---
Ok, so this isn't actually anything big. I installed rzr recovery on my phone and used it to overclock my phone to 1100MHz. The rom runs a lot smoother with the overclock, but there's still a lot of lag. I still need to figure out how to make the Hardware accel work.
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS RECOVERY. IT WAS INTENDED FOR RZ ROMS AND MAY NOT LOAD YOUR BACKUPS CORRECTLY!!!
I've also noticed that some apps like to FC when trying to perform certain functions. Maybe because they're not for HC, but I'll be looking into it. Also, I've been kind of ignoring a problem with coloring because Its not all that important, but I'm adding it to the "to do" list

This is great. Keep up the good work friend!

Update - Minor Thread tweaking
I cut out all of the fat and renamed the thread. Also added a link to download Alpha V0.2
I'm still looking for somewhat experienced devs to take a look under the hood and try to help out. Anyone who would like to test the rom can now that I've uploaded it to the web.
Please, PLEASE remember that this rom is still in alpha stages and needs a lot of work or overseeing from an experienced dev. If you notice any problems that are not listed on the main page, please let me know so I can add it to the "to do" list.

Sorry for the delay in a response, Mastur. I have a 7 week old and a new house as well as working nights, so its been short on free time. I will get you a PM tomorrow and try to give you a hand from there. Thanks!

No worries man. I've been hard at work, but I still need help with this. My friend is familiar with xml and html but not with the android OS. So I don't know how much help he'll be. I don't know anyone familiar with java, but I'm not sure how important that really is...

HUGE update coming a little later! A lot of work finished and screen shots uploaded
EDIT - Update's in!!!! The link to the new alpha of Honeycomb is in the first post. Happy downloading =)

thanks man this is pretty cool

Updated link in first post. Better hardware acceleration, still not perfect

Looking great! Keep it up!

Thank you to all who tested. Now start getting your phones ready for the final build.
Themers:
Check Post #2 for a package of app & framework files. A good majority of the apps are from FRF91 Vanilla Android build so if you have packages that already work with that build then most should work here. Please make sure all packages are compatible. Please use the framework-res.apk provided since it is unique to this ROM. It is much different than the OEM Drodi2 packages.
ROM Developers:
Feel free to use this as a base for your own ROM. Please just respect us and give Matt, Drod and myself the proper credit and a link back to the threads.
History:
Being bored one day and sick of Blur with all the extra services I started to rip the ROM apart. Finally getting it as clean as I can and being forced to have a bit of blur I began a search on how to get rid of it all. I ended up on the MotoDev website to see what I can find when I bumped into the D2 SDK. Shockingly it was a plain vanilla build of Android. I thought why not and tried to boot it up. Ii did ( see first video here[/URL] ) with lots of bugs. The screen res as all off and we had no radio or many other hardware functions. On top of that it ran like a turtle stuck in some molasses. I sent a message of my my buddy Matt4542 and our journey began. From there Drod and I hooked up and now we have this. It has been a long rough week getting this sucker to where it is now. It was fun, frustrating and we nearly killed each other a few times but all ended well since we have a great finished project.
We kind of built AOSP ROM by hand. Some may say it is not a true AOSP ROM but it is. There is no difference between this build and a true AOSP ROM besides any tweaks that the developer may add when creating a ROM from source. We had no choice to do it this way since Moto locked us out of the bootloader (for now and next project). Many of the apps are built from source. About 90% of the app folder is built from source. We added some packages from the D2 that are a bit better and required for hardware reasons. There is NO Blur left in the ROM but for a moto-res.apk file that is required by the framework.
What will this ROM do?
It will give you a true Android Vanilla experience much in the same way the Original Droid (OD) did. It is not loaded with bloatware and everything functions as it should. Facebook will sync with your contacts and you will not have all of your memory being used by wasteful stuff on top of much more. Your phone will run more smoothly and feel a lot faster.
What can you do to help?
The most important thing is to provide feedback. When reporting bugs please be clear and with detailed explanation. Do not say this does not work and leave it that. The more feedback you provide will make it easier and quicker for us to kill any bugs. You may also give us a small donation to help with our continuing development of ROM and *POSSIBLY* get this bootlader cracked. It cannot be done with one device. I have a couple of friends who have experience with low level programming of chips and with their help maybe it can get done. They are Blackberry guys and not going to buy a device just for this. This is nothing more than a promise that it will be tried. I cannot say when and IF it can be done so please keep the questions to a minimum about it. If the project takes off then I will have updates. You can donate to the project by clicking HERE.

I'll be the first to ask - do we need to do all of the wipes if we are upgrading from RC1?
is this the final build?? cause its version 1.0 and are you guys going to provide ota updates?? other than that rom looks AWESOME
Appreciate the hard work guys!
Works great! So much better than the stock D2 ROM.
Cell standby is still an issue
So far so good.
Only two minor things. There is no easy to get to end-call button, which you already know about, and it seems like there is not speech to text support. Not that I really use speech to text, but it could come in handy.
Edit: Nevermind. Might just need to enable it in settings.
Contact Ringtones still don't work
Otherwise, it's gRRRRRRRRReat!
Seems like some bad blood brewing over this ROM on the droidforums page for it. AngDroid/MotoBoy, we all greatly appreciate your work (you too Matt4542! (and anyone else who doesn't get as much time in the lime light!)). As long as you are satisfied with the outcome of the ROM we all appreciate you sharing it with us. Just ignore the lamers that expect you to jump at their every beck and call. It's the first AOSP type ROM for the Droid 2, very first of it's kind for a very locked down phone, which in and of itself is a great accomplishment. If you ever fix anything in Fission, great, if not, I'll continue to look forward to what you develop in the future.
I'm still also curious about your twitter post from the other day, talking about your new Fusion ROM series. Interested to see how that one differs from both stock and Fission.
I am getting the USB problem like I was getting in Beta II. It would connect fine when I first loaded the rom up, and then half the day would pass by and then I can't connect the phone to the computer. Kind of weird. Pretty sure that I can charge from the wall. Just not sure why the USB isn't working.

I wonder if it's something underlying with your phone that's causing that issue. You'd think if it were a common bug you'd see other users complaining about it (as this thread on droid forums is about 8 pages long at this point). Given that it's you, who wrote the tutorials for some of the early D2 stuff, I have no doubt you followed all the steps for installing the ROM. Did you happen to SBF and start stock before going to Fission? I wonder if it could have resulted from flashing over another ROM. Very strange issue though, when I get a good chance to roll my phone up to Fission 1.0 I'll see if I experience the same thing (Thursday is probably a good day to flash, too many phone calls I can't miss between then and now).

How is it an issue? If your phone is on for 10 hours and you use cell for 1 hour of course it is going to eat the greatest percentage of battery use. The issue is the time is off now and then.

We tested this on IRC and it is working for everyone who tested.
if ud like a phone apk like this hit me up with a pm and ill send it to u
Does this ROM contain the ability to link contacts?
The reason I ask is because there are a few facebook contacts of mine that do not list their numbers on their profile but I have their numbers in my phone book. And when I installed Fission RC1, Facebook will list them as a contact but will not show them with the profile and with phone numbers I have in my phone. I recall being able to have that ability to link contacts in the stock D2 rom. Is this feature part of the Blur crap?
It really wouldn't even be an issue if the Facebook contacts were not read-only. I'd just add the numbers to their contact information on the phone then... But I can't. Go Facebook.
Go to the contact u want. Hit menu>edit then hit menu>join then u can pick the facebook contact u want to link it to

Thanks:
Thanks for cvpcs for publicly posting his source, which I compiled from.
Thanks slayher for his vendor setup, for a huge amount of help building my original AOSP build(I decided to switch to building from cvpcs' afterwards), and for the USB fix.
Thanks blackdroid for the idea to fix the sound.
Thanks to Speels for providing me a server to host this ROM on, and his unending moral support
Thanks to everyone who tested this
Thanks everyone for the constant support when this starting driving me INSANE
Thanks tanknspank for reading this over
Thanks to my girlfriend for letting me work on this and not getting angry(LOL)
Current bugs:
Phone reboots when you press the sleep/wake button
Buttons do not vibrate
Video camera crashes
Alt lock key doesn't work
Accelerometer doesn't work
Not sure about others...
Please report any bugs to [email protected]
Features:
From source AOSP ROM
Extra mods in the settings
Zero Motoblur.
Rotary lock screen(Kinda defeats the purpose at the moment haha)
Lock screen music controls(Again defeats the purpose at the moment )
Built in USB tethering
Eliot Stocker's MusicMod
Cytown phone
More to come...
Pre-install steps:
If you would like USB to work, and to have the ability to pull the battery and always reboot into recovery(as long as you don't sbf) follow these steps. You will need USB debugging enabled for these steps.
Step 1: Download the files here for windows and here for Linux depending on what OS you are running. Linux and Windows only for now.
Step 2: Windows: Run dopreinstall.bat with USB debugging on, on your phone.
Linux: Open terminal and cd to the folder you extracted the zip from. Then type "chmod 0755 dopreinstall.sh" then "./dopreinstall.sh" with USb debugging on, on your phone.
How to install:
Step 1: Download and install Koush's bootstrap application if not already done.
Step 2: Copy Unleashed30Alpha.zip to your sdcard and then unmount
Step 3: Bootstrap recovery, then reboot recovery
Step 4: Mount /system in mounts and storage
Step 5: Install Unleashed30Alpha.zip from the sdcard
Step 6: Wipe data/factory reset(Not needed if coming from any Fission release, but recommended, as it may help fix some bugs)
Step 7: Reboot.
Step 8: Once your phone boots, give it around 2-3 minutes before you start using it. Tap the screen every 30-40 seconds to keep it from locking and rebooting.
Step 9: If you get stuck at the Setup Wizard, go back to the "Welcome To DROID2" screen and tap all four corners until it either goes to the home screen, or when you hit the home button it goes to the home screen.
Step 10: Once out of the Setup Wizard, go to your settings, display, and set the display lock to 30 minutes so it doesn't keep shutting off and rebooting.
For USB to work, you will need to have the USB cable plugged in while booting or it will not charge or allow you to copy files to your sdcard. You can always charge through an outlet though.
When you boot, you may get a few force closes. Always select wait on these. You may also get Android System, select wait for that also.
For further support on how to do some of these steps, please join my IRC chat. Go to http://epicroms.com/blog/?page_id=2.

Lol blackdroid is a really nice guy if you get to know him. *Runs and hides from the angry mob* Kidding He has been trying to help me with other things too.
This is awesome! I can't wait for the bugs to get ironed out, AOSP > Moto.
Nice job man. Good to see more roms for these phones. I have no doubt that in time, this AOSP build will lead to lots of great things. Im just hoping this ROM remains open and free, and doesn't turn into" contributionware" which is quite against the GPL because they are trading software for money ie. "Donations" and then not releasing the source.
Right now Im running the newest squiddly, and even though its based on Blur but has most blur removed, it feels just as fast and smooth as Fission. So I really can't wait for the kinks to be worked out of this, and we can have a clean AOSP Rom which will end up being a great building block for other rom cooks.

Thanks I appreciate it. Although I don't agree with applications for donater's, I still respect it. My rom will always be free, and I am going to be releasing the source on github soon. Blackdroid said he thinks he has a lock sleep/wake fix, so once that is fixed this will go into beta.
Again, so glad to see this rom humming right along.
Wish I could help w alpha testing, but I actually need to use my phone too much!
Looking forward to upcoming releases, loving some of the things you have integrated (read: music controls on lockscreen)

Actually it is not BS at all. Go study the GPL for yourself. What they are doing is in violation of the GPL, its ok to give a precompiled version to donators early, IF you are also releasing the source code at the same time. They are not releasing the source code when they release it to donators, and as far as I've seen they have yet to even make their git repo public.
Although I'm not going to download the alpha verison of this ROM just yet, I just can't wait for the final version. I'm a big fan of your work Matt. Keep going, we're rooting for ya.
Whoooooo! Thanks, Matt!
Congratulations Matt this is exciting, that its all coming together.Awesome job
This is gonna be great. I have no doubt this is gonna ROCK! keep it up Matt!
Being a Fission user I am very happy to see this coming together. I used Fission for a while but don't like the Donationware and not following the GPL.
All things aside I am just happy to see alot of the things Matt has added since his Unleashed was the first Rom I used.
Was just thinking about something last night -- not sure how implementable it is in reality, orif there already exists a way to achieve this....
I would _love_ it if I could bypass the lockscreen on slide open. Is there any way to accomplish this? I can't understand why this isn't the default or otherwise integrated....
Anyway still looking forward to a more stable release...keep up the good work!

There's a Market app called "No Lock" that does this.

No Lock disables the lockscreen entirely. If you just want to unlock on keyboard slide, check out Screen Tools.

[GPL- Violation] Full HDMI Mirroring(Released)--(NEW UPDATED APP)

:::EDIT:::
FROM Orrebmas himself
Hi,
I was told and verified that the donate button does not work in the version I released. I fixed and re-uploaded it to android central. Please update your post.
Thanks for bringing it to XDA.
-- orrebmas
I have updated the app to the new updated version with the donate button working!
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-rooting-roms-hacks/63799-fullhdmi-official-fullhdmi-beta-discussion.html ----BETA Thread Discussion thread made by Orrebmas

Thanks to Orrebmas over at Android Central there is a working BETA version of the FULL HDMI for EVO.
All,
It is here finally, FullHDMI "limited time" public beta is attached in this post. This version is to mass test the app and get feedback before the next step.
I will be making an announcement later today about the beta and its purpose, but for now I am attaching it and going to get some sleep. You will need the Kernel posted several pages back on this thread to enable some features, and root. I just realized that non-root is broken as of this version.
Some of the things you need to know about before tinkering with the app, pasting quickly:

Most TVs have multiple options for aspect ratio. For example, zoom, hourglass, etc. Just make sure this setting is set to fill the screen.
I am not saying that is the case for all of you, it just was for me. Once I changed the setting, it filled the screen perfectly without messing with the X Y resolutions.
And also:

1- To achieve hardware acceleration, video memory (minimal) has to be used. Some poorly coded programs that also use video memory will try to grab a hold of the entire memory block instead of the available. This will cause them to crash when you are in hardware mode reserving a small block of memory to yourself. The only application that I found to be doing this is, strangely enough, HTC's Gallery (specifically video playback mode). Gallery video playback will keep trying to acquire the whole video memory, put the phone in a tight infinite loop doing so and eventually force close (after about 40 sec).
Compatibility or software mode does not use video memory and is safe to keep on while launching Galley video playback. Compatibility mode also does not make use of the "supercharged" feature, custom res or fullscreen mode.
2- FPS: Your frames per second will not be the same as on your phone. This is because the app is designed to keep the phone as primary display and output a secondary to the HDMI port. You are also outputting, most likely, a 1280x720 pixels which is almost ~2.5 times more the normal output. So in total you are pushing 3.5 lcd size screen worth of pixels (phone lcs + hdmi). Things can be improved if we freeze the phone display, but that wont be mirroring (maybe a feature in FullHDMI 2). Expect, however, to get more FPS in 3-D games (I get upwards of 40 fps on Raging Thunder 2) than 2-D sine he 2-D engine does the mirroring.
3- Lag: Some TVs (like Insignia) use an image enhancing and noise reducing engine. This extra processing puts the TV about half a second behind the phone making games unplayable by looking at the TV only. Watching movies is fine since nobody cares if the phone is a little faster than the TV. On this Insignia TV, I had to go in and turn off two image enhancing and noise reducing features, and now my phone and TV track together. I know Sony has its own engine, I do not know if the extra processing there introduces lag. I have two other TVs with no lag issues, but then they don't use any image enhancing engines.
Again, the app should not lag in mirroring, if you experience any lag then please check your TV and share your observation with us.
4- This app was not designed to display youtube or other apps that already work over HDMI. To use such apps you should stop FullHDMI from driving the HDMI signal first.
ENJOY
iF YOU DECIDE TO THANK ME FOR POSTING THIS UP, I APPRECIATE IT BUT NOT NEEDED..I DID NOT DEVELOP THIS APP IN ANY WAY, JUST POSTED IT FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT.

IMPORTANT..YOU WILL NEED TO UNZIP THE FILE YOU DOWNLOAD THEN THE KERNEL AND APK ARE IN THERE TO INSTALL!!! You will only need to do this for the RAR file. if downloading from a phone look below
I also uploaded the APK and kernel for everyone on top of the rar file so they can just do it on there phone also. So from the phone download the apk file and the zip file. place those on root of sd card and your good to go. Just boot into recovery and install kernel.

Great post. I guess we will see how this is received now. I must tell you that the mods here tell me that do not not like the spirit in which they say this app was developed . I hope this thread does well to inform people of this type of app and its uses... I also hope those who are against this app being discussed here can refrain from posting and just wait for the dev that they like to come up with their own app that is actually out and available to be tested and used .
I have been using the app for a week or so and am very impressed to say the least . Watching movies wherever j go from my phone has been most awesome.

myTouch 4G Slide - first impressions

Hi all,
(I just joined today - hope you would go easy on me as I am still learning the xda etiquette.)
Just received my T-mobile HTC myTouch 4G slide and activated it on Sunday.
(Now before I jump onto my first impression of the phone, let me be clear - Till Sunday, I was proud owner of Nokia N900. I still love that phone. But I had to jump onto the Android bangwagor sooner or later since Nokia decided to to WinMo way. N900 was a solid phone with an unpolished/unfinished OS. Nokia never gave it a chance to mature.)
So, please keep in mind that I am new to Android as well as HTC and the phone itself.
Here is what I liked in my one full day of playing with the hardware and the OS/Software:
1. Android is fast, stable and polished, and enough apps to install one every day for rest of my life.
2. Phone is fast, not much stutter, has not crashed yet. Data connection is stable and voice quality is good.
3. UI looks, er, shiny (I do not give much weight to this, but apparently, a lot of people do, given popularity of 'certain' phones).
4. Keyboard is good. (one of the main reasons to buy the phone, as querty keyboard is a must for me )
Now onto negatives:
1. Lack of user control - though I have flexibility in controlling a lot of things on Android, there are a lot of other things which I really want to control but can not - i.e. uninstall t-mo / HCT bloatware (see my next point).
2. Bloatware - this was a shock to me. N900 is a clean device with no crap installed. T-Mo and HTC made sure I start hating my phone on day one by giving me pre-installed uninstallable crap. Not only I do not want them, it actually confuses me. I do not have a dedicated media player - but I have a 'Media Room' with T-Mobile TV and Slacker Radio (and none of them are complete versions). Bejeweled 2, T-mo backup, Highlight, Friend Stream - the list goes on, and I can not remove any of the app.
3. Android - no default file manager. Are you kidding me?
4. Contact - multiple entries from multiple sources (i.e. 411 & more is listed 4 times - one from google, one from tmo backup, one from phone and one from sd card). I know I can link them, or disable view of some of them, but god damn it - it's confusing as hell.
5. Camera - now don't get me wrong. The camera on this phone may be one of the best among Android/iphone phones, but where it gives you a lot of megapixels, the lens (and hence the quality) does not hold water against N900. Software can not make up for hardware limitations.
6. Battery - I almost ran out of juice before I even reached home from work in the evening - and that too from very limited use. Yes, I used phone for quite a bit, but without wireless/gps. I understand the display eats battery, but come on - shouldn't a smartphone be up on batter for one full day?
I will add more as I come across.
Please note that this is not a rant - there is some genuine disappointment with my first real hands on with Android/HTC. With the bloatware on this phone, I feel like I am being take advantage off, and I hate that feeling.
I am a linux user for 12 years (personally and professionally - as a programmer) and I consider myself a power-user (though not anywhere near Guru level), and so far, the phone has not given me even a default file browser.
I really hope to find more positive things to say, as I am committed to Android now that there is hardly any other linux-y OS out there.
Thanks
E
I agree. i havent upgraded since the G1.... i was very excited ... and first hands on was huge disapointment. bloatware, yes, and no skype video ...thats an android issue but none the less the phone seemed very unorganized and i was getting a billion messages from all over the internet with the bloatware subrcribing me to every little notification.
All of your problems except for "Camera issues" will be fixed as soon as S-OFF is available, and dev's will begin porting roms and developing roms. I expect overclocking to be tremendous with this dual core processor, since the mytouch 4g can now be clocked to over 2.0 ghz.
*If you want a file manager download astro from the market.
I forgot whether it requires root or not. If that one does, there are many other file managers just search.
Seems like the judgments are extra harsh and could all be solved by software, unrooting, etc. I'm stoked to be able to overclock to 2 GHz and then some. S-OFF on the MT4GS will be awesome!!!
There are many very good free media players/music players on the market (ex. Tinyplayer) . Same with the file managers, Astro is recommended. That's what the market is there for, as they knew dovelopers could provide the device with excellent applications.

It seems you have heard it right.
Apparently, I did not know:
1. Android 2.3.4 enabled voice/video chat for GTalk app.
2. I certainly did not know HTC/T-MO decided to disable it!
Instead, there is Qik Video Chat app from tmo. For some reason, they think it's equivalent to gtalk? *facepalm*
(Now I hope I am wrong, but I have checked all options on GTalk app, and I do not see either video or audio icon next to my contacts, even if they are available to chat on video).
Let me add that to another negative.

Thanks. I know it's pretty new device, and mods/root/s-off will be available soon. That's why I have registered here. I was just giving first impression of the stock device. Yes, I have already downloaded Astro (does not require root). Not much impressed, but gets the job done.

Yes, I know it would get resolved by software/unrooting. That's why I am on this forum. As I said above, these is my first impression of the stock device. And no - I don't think it's harsh at all. Sorry if I came across like that.

Sure there are. But my point is that there are some apps which should come by default on the phone as part of the OS (e.g. Google Search, Contact, Calendar are part of the vanilla Android), and File manager should be at the very top. Anyways, I have already downloaded Astro, and many other apps to play around with it.
I am definitely looking forward to get rid of the software as soon as I can. Otherwise, this baby will have to go back.
Thank you for your comments.

Skype is audio only. No video support.
I moved from a very old android phone so this phone has so far not been able to truly lag on me.
My last phone was regular android even with stock so that is what I wanted. I'm not one to modify my home screen at all. I like the default black 2.3 look and that's what I want. Not Sense.
The fact that I have to void my warranty just to remove it makes me furious. Of course I could bring it back to none rooted state for that. Regardless I think it's hilarious that a bunch of marketing folks think they know better then I do. Heh.
I've made Android apps before and actually code for a living so it's pretty easy to tell that it's a rushed job. The sense front end has no way to disable contact finding so your phone basically becomes facebook and puts contact suggestions directly into your notifications based on your contacts.
Every single "built in" application then requires you to then agree to the terms of service for that specific application. Things like "KidZone", "Highlight", "T-Mobile Mall", "T-Mobile TV". One of the silliest ones is "doubleTwist" which when opened shows you a splash that asks you to click a "Send Email" button which sends you a link to download the app. It then removes itself off the phone. Sounds like malware to me.
So some company payed off Tmo to put this app on my phone so they can harvest my email. Yay.

I'm personally hoping Blah and Sparks port PyroMod to the MT4Gs after root and S-Off are achieved. But that's just me, and I like to add as much memory as possible (A2EXT would certainly enable THAT).
Also, to OP, just wait until root is available and you'll see just how amazing Android can be. I recommend OI File Manager for a default one (this is the one preinstalled on Cyanogenmod-based ROMs). I switched to this one after too many buggy Astro updates and they started with ad-supported versions.

I just realized something: Why hasn't the hacking/development community made a "status of root update" thread for the Doubleshot the way they did for the Vision? Permaroot and S-OFF are what's really holding me back from getting this device (PyroMod 2.3.5's speedy boot time on the Vision actually DOES rival that of dual-core phones, so I'm in no hurry to get it; I'm just asking why there isn't one).

[3-9-12][ROM][EP4D] InfinityROM

NOTE: I will support this here as well, and am posting here so others can see the ROM as well. However, I will keep the post and information more up-to-date on Rootzwiki. I don't have time to browse through a bunch of different forums for support questions and other requests, so please keep that in mind when posting here.
With that being said, here is what you've been waiting for. This is the continuation of the last InfinityROM that was created based on the EP1W leak. A lot has changed since then, way to much to go through and update in the posts of the previous topic, so we are starting out fresh. This ROM is based on the official OTA that just recently got sent out to DROID Charge users everywhere. From there, it went through a major weight loss session, and got a full make over to get the wonderful orange and brown stock color scheme out. Much of the theming work was originally done by Retrokid223, and has been brought into this new ROM by myself. We went for a TouchWiz 4 look from the SGS2, mainly because it is currently the look that I like.
To go through a brief history of what this ROM has gone through to get to its current release state, here is a slight Cliff Notes run-down. I took the update and went from EE4 to EP4D. I then dumped the stock ROM from my phone and deodexed it. From there, I went to work taking out a bunch of stuff that people don't want, and things that are easily installed from the market. After that, I replaced a small handful of TouchWiz apps with their AOSP equivalents, and rethemed everything, updating icons and images as needed from newer SGS2 and also SGS ROMs that have been released into the wild since EP1W came out. A few tasteful mods have also been added, and from here, TSM Parts will follow shortly.
This ROM is mainly so people can continue to use InfinityROM and the latest update without having the ugly stock color scheme. I will try to keep a TSM Parts free version updated as changes are made, but not everything will remain free of TSM parts changes forever. This initial release does not have anything major TSM additions in it yet, but those are on their way for the people that want them (myself included). Many apps have remained stock, though they have been rethemed to ditch the stock color scheme. The reason for this is to keep the added functionality of the TouchWiz versions, cause the AOSP versions of many of the apps are lacking in the usability department. Stuff that has been replaced has been from a stock, deodexed dump of 2.3.7 from the Nexus S.
To go with the great ROM, is a great repacked kernel. Since you can only do so much to a stock kernel when repacking it, I kept the EP4P kernel from the last test version of the ROM with the current update. This will be replaced in the coming weeks once I can get a source built kernel going. There are only minor changes to the kernel that is included, so it's nothing really special, but it gets the job done.
Screenshots will be added at a later date, along with what are likely to be several additions that users can put into the ROM (stock keyboards and other items). For now, this is what you get, and stay tuned for future updates, as there is more to come.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get root access?
Download and install Superuser from the market. The su binary that is required should already be there via the kernel, all that is required is its complimentary application.
How do I install the ROM?
See the first post of this thread.
How do I go from XXX to this ROM?
The fastest way to go to this ROM from anything is by downloading and flashing the ROM+Kernel on EXT4 package. That will format your partitions to EXT4 and then install the kernel and ROM. Note that this will wipe all of your user data in the process, so be sure to backup anything you may want prior to flashing.
Where is Gmail, YouTube, Maps, etc.
All Google applications were removed from the ROM. This was to make sure that you are running an up-to-date version on your device and it also saves some bandwidth when the ROM is downloaded.
Does this kernel support Voodoo?
The kernel does not use the Voodoo Lagfix functions. However, it does fully support EXT4 partitions. Voodoo Lagfix is meant so partitions can be converted to and from RFS/EXT4. To do this, the boot process is slowed down for partition checks and conversion. To avoid this, I just enabled EXT4 support so you can still reap the benefits of the improved read/write capabilities without having to wait for the phone to boot up.
Voodoo sound is another matter entirely and can be enabled (in part) by using Voodoo Control Plus. This will allow you to load a beta Voodoo Sound driver that supports many of the functions of Voodoo Sound. Until source code is release for Gingerbread though, full Voodoo Sound support will be unavailable.
Does this kernel support overclocking?
No it does not. Source code will need to be released before many features, such as overclocking can be included.
Do you have plans to include XXX in your ROM?
The current plans for this ROM are to bring in TSM parts, and any updates to that it receives as well. There may be some other updates outside of TSM Parts, but currently, there are no other major plans. If you would like to see something included, please link to what you would like and it will be taken into consideration.
I am having xxx issue, can you fix it?
We can certainly try, however, we will need some information from you first. In order to fix a problem, we need as much information as possible from you about it. Please provide details of the issue, such as the application name you are having problems with. If you can reproduce the issue consistently, provide the details on how to do so, that way we can attempt to recreate it ourselves. If it is a graphical glitch, try to get a screenshot of the problem, or a regular camera picture. The most valuable information you can provide is logcat output, see below on capturing a good log for us.
How can I get a good log of a problem I am having?
There are two methods you can use to get a log for us. The easiest method is to use aLogcat from the market. An alternative method is to use adb on your computer. If you do not know how to save the adb output from logcat to a text file, I recommend using aLogcat. Once you are ready to capture a log, start logcat from adb, or aLogcat. With the log still running in the background, recreate your issue several times (3 to 4 times should be sufficient). Once you have recreated the issue multiple times, stop the logging and save the log file. With aLogcat, it will be saved to your SDCard. Then, take your log output and send it to us, preferably via PM. The reason we request via PM is that sometimes, logcat can capture personal information, such as your email address or phone number. Rest assured that we have no interest in this and will use the output strictly as a debugging tool to help fix whatever issue you are reporting. We hate spam just as much as you do. I have also attempted to remove as much of the debugging output of personal information as possible, but I can't catch everything. In any event, I still recommend learning to use logcat from the Android SDK, as it is an invaluable tool.
Also, if you are reporting a graphical bug (something that needs themed), please get a screenshot of what you see that needs changed. Note that we cannot change everything. If it is from an application that is not included with the ROM, it may be much harder to fix the problem as sometimes apps do not pull their color information from the ROM and hard code their own colors. This is most noticeable in the quick panel notifications. However, it is still possible that something was missed, so feel free to submit reports of anything that you feel has yet to be themed.
Help, I restarted into recovery and lost all of my data!
This is an issue that affects people randomly. My opinion is that you can deal with it for the time being. I recommend using a good backup solution that doesn't involve recovery. I say this because I test ROMs and have had my data wiped hundreds of times due to testing over the past several weeks. If I can deal with resetting everything all the time as the developer, you, as the user, should also be able to make due until a permanent solution can be found.
How can I thank you for your work?
Just click the thanks button on our posts. We do this for fun, but if you wish to a monetary donation, click the Donate button by my Profile Picture.
How can I get XXX app to vibrate on new notifications?
It seems that some applications are ignoring the global vibrate notification setting. To fix this, go into the application and press the menu button and go to settings (or however you get to the application settings). Find the notification settings, and turn on vibrate. It seems that messaging is the biggest complain among people, and this should solve the problem.
I created a theme for your ROM but have no where to host it
If you send me a link to your theme, I will host it for you on my site (imnuts.org). Note that I may not get to your message for hosting immediately, and also I won't host any theme that isn't tasteful and clean. If I find out that you are porting a theme without permission, your file(s) will be removed immediately and any further actions appropriate will be taken.
Can XXX be added to the FAQ?
While we strive to keep up with posts, sometimes we may overlook a repeated question or issue. If you see something you would like posted in the FAQ, feel free to ask. We only ask that you put your request in the following format:

Thanks....cant wait to see how it looks!!!
awesome job bud
it can be a pain to maintain rom threads across multiple forums, but there are those that only frequent one forum so its helpful to them
You are the man! Can't wait for tw4.
just wondering...how long should it take for first boot?
been hangin out at this SGII logo for about 5 minutes
EDIT: battery pull, reboot to recovery, wiped dc, boots fine now
I usually hang out here and on RootzWiki so if I ever see any questions about this ROM, I'll try to answer them as best as I can for you (imnuts).

That happens occasionally on any rom after a dalvik wipe. Not sure why, but it seems like something just gets hung up sometimes.
LOVE IT!!!!!!
Thanks for the new rom. Works great and I love the color scheme. I just wish I could find some GS2 widgets that would work with this rom and I'd be set for life

That may arrive in a future update. Need to talk with the TSM Fascinate folks about the rest of the TW4 integration.
Flashing now through CWR. Cannot Wait! Grazie!

Look at the GT-I9100 (SGS2) and it's stock look/theme and that is basically what this will look like. You could also get an idea of the look from the T-Mo/Sprint SGS2 variants, as well as several original SGS variant Gingerbread updates. I'll post some screenshots then when I get a chance to take them.
Awesome ROM!! Running smooth as butter. Only downside is i've already had the random data wipe after booting into recovery to flash the Minimal Theme. But I definitely like where this is going.
Sweet thanks, gave me another reason to stay up late and not talk to the wife.
Very nice
Very nice rom....clean slick to the point no bloat. I like being able to decide what is on my phone or not. Great Job, I may have a reason to keep this thing now...lol
Awesome and thanks! The Rom is working fabulously for me so far. Hoping that themers will take you up on your offer and begin themeing soon. Always love blue based themes myself.
Thanks again for the Rom!
Oh, by the way, do you plan on always packaging your kernel with the Rom or will you ever separate it as a stand alone download?
