What do you think. 10mb is too much because you can't play 3D games, but maybe 5mb or 2.5mb ram hack? Thanx

True, but everyone is saying that swap makes froyo roms a bit unstable. That's why I thought a 5mb ram hack.
P.s 100% you'll see an improvement in a ram hack rather than the swap. That's what people are looking for.

I would have to disagree, swap was giving no issues on several roms for me and 5+ other G1 users on the same roms. Compcache was giving us all issues, but only a few random reboots on occasion, or a FC or two.
However I am hearing that CC works fine as of the latest cyanogen release. I think the issues some people are actually having is ending up with both swap and CC on since the "default" settings changed over to cc.
As for the ram hack? I've not been having memory issues in froyo as far as a shortage on ram. I use swap, and have used it since I first rooted and etc. but I think I'll give CC another try now that cyanogen is recommending it. I'd rather have a good "3D fix" like what firerat did with his script on 2.1 roms, I don't think it works with 2.2 roms from what I read, but I would like to have LWP running like they did on 2.1
Just my two cents
Ramhack is not even possible on the newer kernel branches, plus 2.1+ is very dependent on 3D that it wouldn't make sense to add a "ramhack". it cripples 2.2 if you would do so..Go ask dumfuq or pershoot and they'll tell you that no ramhack will work for 2.2 .

Dude.... don't say that. We're talking about android here. Really, a 2mb ram hack will completely cripple any 2.2 roms?!

Before anyone of you attempt this, adding swap file to your devices grants you the ability to run more processes, sure, but what you fail to realize is the devices almost constantly writes to the swap file.which uses up CPU cycles, causing your device to be a bit slower, also, flash memory, regardless the.format, has limited number of writes, adding a swap file makes the device write almost constantly,.reducing the overall lifetime of your flash memory. Adding a swap file isnt the best idea if you're looking for speed increase.

I thought Android 2.1 starting utilizing the GPU more, making the ramhack infeasible because it will severely degrade screen rendering performance from Android 2.1 and up.
Compcache is okay. Don't swap if you can help it.

Okay? People remember when 2.1 was way unstable then openeclair 2.1 w/ 10mb ram hack made it at least toyible (I know that it's not a word). I didn't in anyway make it severely degradable...

I can see your not going to be convinced easily....If it was possible dumfuq o pershoot would have made a kernel with the ram hack...But froyo is more dependent on the GPU. Why do you think phones with 2.1+ have such powerful gpus? One app that would suffer is gallery 3D,videos,youtube,games,maybe animations. Just use compache, if swap isnt something you want...I dont like froyo on the G1, so i stick to 1.6, which is where it really shines..But i hate giving up things like unlock via trackball, text color, etc. And there's no way im putting vanilla on my MTS cause that wont do it justice.

Agreed. I don't know why you're so fond of the idea of having +5mb of ram anyways, that's not even enough to run a lot of apps or processes. The speed up would not be noticeable and since the froyo roms use more of the gpu(as stated before) you would probably even see some slow downs. You have to understand this, even if we HAD the ramhack no one would use it. You're better off with a new phone.

So again, how was it possible to put a 10mb ram hack on openeclair 2.1 rom?
sent from my HTC G1 using CM7 IN-STEREO (( WHERE AVAILABLE ))
the only reason the ramhack was used then was because the gpu drivers were broken until cm5 came out
the only reason eclair became usable is because of how CM set it up - the ram hack is not possible anymore and not even useful (never was IMO)

Does every rom developer and/or Kernel builder have to come in and smack sense into you?
2 days of you arguing.. if it was possible, common sense might tell you that someone would have jumped in and said "oh, here you go"
Froyo is majorly dependent on the gpus in the new higher end android phones. Using a ram hack, takes away ram from the GPU... froyo was NEVER made for the G1.
Rather then sit here and argue with people who know 100x more about it then you, why dont you go off and try and do it yourself and learn something in the process rather then clutter the boards with your mindless blabber?

I hope there are. The froyo builds out now still have noticeable lag to me, despite some things being faster. If there are plans, is there an eta?
........wat
Voodoo requires a custom kernel. Once the source for the 2.2 kernel is available, I'm sure we'll see a port. Until then you can only use ext2/3 lag fixes. I don't believe ext4 support is in the standard 2.2 kernel either.

But the Froyo build is B E TA - lots of things don't work on it.
It is a little to early to decide if we need voodoo. For all we know, Samsung reformatted all the filesystems to EXT4 or something else entirely.
I hope you are right, but I'm not counting on samsung getting rid of rfs in /data. I agree ji6 is buggy. It also eats battery for breakfast. I'm much happier being on cog 2.1.7 than I was on that version of froyo. I just hope to use voodoo if rfs is still on the sd card when froyo comes out. Oclf just isn't as smooth.
Of course, source code. I didn't think of that. Thanks.
Which is faster when using a voodoo kernel? As I understand it, voodoo kernels for GB just came out. What quadrant scores are you achieving on GB using a voodoo kernel?

Froyo is faster and more stable atm.. I would suggest you start with Froyo.. and then try GB at a later time after you have a feel for the phone on a stable platform.
I agree with kejar31. You may be able to achieve a higher quadrant score on gb, but quadrant means nothing. Froyo is the way to go until the final release leak or the official release.

I am not even sure people are getting higher quadrant scores with GB even with the Lagfix
start with getting CWM and flashing a voodoo kernel, maybe flash rooted/debloated EE4 (my set up) and see how you like it... then test the waters maybe with Humble or GummyCharged, after you get the hang of the phone/flashing maybe then go on to GB and GB roms
blazing through on my VZ Droid Charge
I'm coming from a Fascinate previously running JT's CM7, so I'm very familiar with both Samsung and flashing. Having said that, (with no disrespect to those who aren't devs) I'll take the advice of kejar and start with 2.2.
I understand that source code is very important for further development to continue. Coming from a Fascinate, Samsung is/was/has been notoriously slow. Have there been any major OTA's/improvements released by Samsung to come along since the Charge was released, or should I expect to rely mainly upon the awesome devs here at XDA for support (as I did with the Fascinate)? Btw... thanks again for all you do, to all of the devs who support and make our androids useable/awesome/incredible/insert adjective!

yeah 2.2's a good starting point, its very much like the Fascinate... as for OTAs, I believe the Charge shipped with ED1, then got an update to ED2 and finally EE4 (what my Charge had when I got it). If I read correctly there have been several GB leaks (3 maybe?) but no official OTA or even announcement of it receiving GB. I believe it will (hopefully soon) seeing as there have been GB leaks indicating they're working on it and for the time being its samsung's flagship 4G device, I don't think they'd leave it high and dry (though I wouldn't put it past them with the whole fascinate debacle )
With the 7.1 release the other day and all the newly supported devices, I kinda felt like the GS4G was the red headed step-child.
I brainstormed... what is the best way to get CM7+ on our device?
Best result I could come up with was to ask the guys who helped get it on the OG Vibrant.
Their response was abbreviated. (A) do it myself (not possible) or (B) get them a device.
Well, I guess that leaves trying to figure out how to get a device into the hands of an official CM team developer
OR
Coming up with a better idea.
I am soliciting advice/feedback for either of these two options.
EDIT:
Just realized my thread title is pretty misleading... but if it helps get views, sorry. It was not intentional, promise
EDIT 2:
I should also point out that I have been sending tweets to Samsung / and their support, for kernel source.
so they don't need the samsung to release the official GB for our device? cuz the source code for GB kernel will be available after that
we need the gb kernel source... mabe cough samsung cough leak us some kernel source instead of updateing the rom every 2 days
I don't think we need kernel source at all. CM and Miui are both on the Vibrant and it doesn't have any GB source because, well, there is no GB for the Vibrant.
The SGS4G and Vibrant are so similar I think a CM dev could get this working NP with the help of a couple users. But hey, what do I know?

lol just was trying to get some kernel source it can be done with the stock kernel just going to have to do alot of fenessing of the rom ;P
it'll be different that the vibrant CM kernel. This is due to the source being COMPLETELY different. I've diff'd the sources, and nothing matches up.
The vibrant is using a modified I9K GB source. That is what is making it work.
As far as using the stock kernel, sure, we can do that, but it would have to be modified for every update, and nightlies... yeah, you can forget about that. RFS/EXT4 wont be added as an official CM build due to it will break the i9k/cap/fascinate/vib builds.
Once I get a new 4G, I'll continue working on the kernel/build.

But what's the point of it being able to support that speed when the network doesn't even get close to that fast? And do we really need speeds that high especially with the data cap? My phone averages 10 down and 5 up, which is MUCH more than what I need.

a major percentage of overall data use on smartphones involve streaming media.. and that number has skyrocketed over the past few years.. yes browsing xda and the web is fast on the gsg4g, but you really see the differences when downloading large files and streaming

Recently got my infuse...day after I got it, I installed UCKK1...now UCKK3 and downloading UCKK4, DarkyRom JVR 10.3 and CatyRom all at the same time.
Decisions...decisions. Help me out guys/gals!
Thanks.
In reality they are are the best roms. It comes down to preferences really. I for example like simple roms, that I can customize to my liking so I use CM7.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
I figured it is a matter of preference but I am more interested in functionality and which ROMs are working in full. Themes included would be nice but not necessary. I am running GB 2.6.35.7 and really modded Homescreen.
You can start by picking a category of ROM. There are Froyo and Gingerbread ROM's (and ROM's with ICS framework that have been banned, so you'll need to look elsewhere for those), there are Samsung ROM's and there are AOSP/CM/MIUI ROM's, there are AT&T ROM's and there are non-AT&T ROM's, there are Infuse-based ROM's and there are Galaxy S-based ROM's. Each category of ROM will only work with a matching category of kernel. You should start by learning the differences between these: for example, AT&T Infuse-based ROM's paired with AT&T Infuse-based kernels are the only ones that support MHL/HDMI-out on the Infuse. Samsung ROM's have TouchWiz framework, apps, and out-of-the box support for more media formats than other ROM's (non-TouchWiz ROM's will require 3rd party apps to play the same music and video files). Galaxy S-based ROM's will have the no-sound-on-first-call-after-boot bug. For example, DarkyROM is a Galaxy S-based non-AT&T Samsung Gingerbread ROM, whereas UCKK4 is an Infuse-based AT&T Samsung Gingerbread ROM (which only has HDMI support when paired with the stock UCKK4 kernel).
Just curious why are the ics framework roms so taboo? Esp since we still have no gb support(not to mention att pretty much already killed the phone) from the phone creators I figured you developers are our only hope.
Hardwise aside from low ram how well do yall think ics would run?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I'm no developer, but it has to do with starting from scratch on everything from the kernel up to the framework for ics, whereas with gb there have been several leaks to start off of and tweak. so technically if a developer were to start from scratch, they'd probably use ics. but we don't have any developers that dedicated for infuse, most top developers left the infuse forums months ago.
so asking for a full ics rom from the start-up devs we do have is a little above and beyond, and the experienced devs we do have won't spend that much time on this phone. and devs don't like it very much when someone who doesn't have a deeper understanding of what goes into making a rom just states that they want one.
and ics would run fine on the infuse if developed properly (and especially if officially). Technically the infuse should get ics as per the statement samsung made back in May at google IO about keeping phones sold updated for 18 months or something like that, but doubt that will ever happen.

The kernel used in the thread for Galnet MIUI ICS for the Infuse actually did have its source posted. But then the link to the source disappeared and the thread was locked. Conspiracy? But now that there's an official build on the Galnet site, I don't really care.
What kernals
Can we use on CM7.
I am a compulsive flasher, there you go I admit it.
One thing though I am sure it's been mentioned somewhere but what kernals work with CM7 RC02. I see some kernals mention they will softbrick the phone, so avoid those but which don't.
