[Q] Advice on wether to get a refund or replacement - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I am returning my tablet for the 2nd time to amazon as it has severe light bleeding and the sound is seriously messed up because the bezel slipped. I was originally just going to get another transformer, but now I'm thinking, should I wait for the next generation of tablets? Like asus' kal-el tablet? Or should I just get a replacement then sell this when the next generation comes out and buy one of those. I don't really need the tablet for anything and the numerous little problems and bugs really annoy me.
Thanks for your advice!

I'm actually having the same thoughts... :/ this is my second one as well and it is giving me the same light bleed issues. Should I try again for another one? Or just return it...?

I think if moderate light bleed is your only problem, think carefully about returning it. I'm returning mine cause I cant listen to audio with headphones. But the newest batch (B06) has supposedly fixed light bleed problems

Mine is a b06 and has a minor light bleed. Nothing important.
What is your serial numbers first 3 digits.

It is B40
Silly xda charachter requirement

If you have the ability to get a refund I would suggest you do it. I am seriously disappointing with mine but unfortunately I cannot get a refund, only an exchange.
My honest feeling over the past few years is that the technology is just not there. It isn't ever going to be flawless I understand as I work in software but some of these issues just seem to be poor QC or just cheap parts. The screen issue sucks and I don't think ASUS has done anything to fix it.
My buddies Samsung seems flawless and I wish I could get one of those but in general Android for Tabs still has a way to go. If you don't need one, I would wait for future generations but it will always be an issue pushing functionality that is cool but just not quite there.

I am unable to find a b60 one...this is my second one and both are b40 and have light bleed all over the bottom and left. I wouldn't mind one little light bleed but I have a few little ones that are annoying when I am in the dark... sigh. Will these light bleeds get worse over time if I don't return it for a perfect one or will it stay like this? Whatdobyou guys think?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

My B60 has some bad light bleeds and its my second from amazon. So im in the same refund or replacement boat.

Got 3rd unit(replacement) yesterday from amazon and I can say the light bleeds are very minimal and the internet seems much faster. But I have noticed a bright spot on the screen with lighter colors. Cant asus make unit without problems.

[UPDATED] Quality Control / Reliability Poll

I figured I would get an updated reliability poll going since many people are getting their TF and docks now.
Many of you have reported multiple issues with their device. Please vote for ALL options that apply to your situation.
Thanks and vote away!
There's no poll to vote in that I can see.
Edit: there she is.
fail!!!!!!
It's up guys. It just takes a while to get it created. For some reason, the post comes up before the poll is completed.
Light leak and creakiness here. Not sure if I should RMA or not considering I could receive one with issues that are worse.
Light leakage, dust under the screen, very small gap between display and bezel and creakiness here
The question is whether you will keep in spite of the defects.

I had the following:
Light Bleed: Not even sure it is avoidable with this type of screen.
Screen wasn't flush with the housing on the right center inside.
2 dead pixels.
The screen was off center or skewed. Kind of like an old CRT monitor that you had to mess with to center.
The back has some give but I'm not sure its an issue. Its wide, weight seems evenly distributed and it doesn't seem frail or weak.
I returned mine to the vendor for a replacement due to the off center screen and dead pixels. I only hope that the replacement doesn't suffer from the same issues. I should know by the middle of next week.

Unfortunately I'm out of time to get it replaced by the store where I purchased it and ASUS Italy repair facilities still can't accept any RMA for the TF101.
The tablet itself works fine so I'll just wait some time until they'll have solved most of their HW production issues, then I'll submit a RMA ticket.
It is alarming that the vast majority have some king of issue. This is really not common for Asus based on other products they sell. They're actually considered one of the most reliable manufacturers of all.

Only problem with saying the vast majority have some issue is this may not be true or any real indication seeing as internet community behaviour is such that people post to moan when they've got problems and less likely to scream and shout about a perfect device as they're more than happy playing with it doing other things. Just saying that's all. I will have my TF bundle Friday night when I collect it so will be able to see if it's got any issues I notice but if it's perfect I won't be posting to say how great it is if it's perfect I'll be too busy enjoying it lol
Mine was dead right out of the box. Wouldn't even power on. I returned it and am now waiting for my amazon preorder to come. I am so glad i did'nt cancel that. If that one has problems, i'm gonna wait for the samsung
Question, does the build quality matter where the tf was made. I don't have my tf yet but I seen in a video that the box of one tf said "Made In China."
Were everybody's tf made in China?
Maybe this can determine where the bad eggs are coming from.

My main issue was the dock, but after receiving a dock firmware upgrade everything works flawlessly. Once HC 3.1 hits, it will be the best tablet ever.
I am going to refrain from voting for a few days, aside from one SOD I've had zero problems with either the tablet or the dock so far, I will wait a few days though before voting.
I understand that there is a huge bias towards those having problems as those that don't are less likely to report. However, such a poll can be helpful in indicating the majority of the problems people are having. It is alarming, still, that there is such a high disparity between those without problems and that do. I was expecting, well, hoping, that it wouldn't be this bad.
doron: They're all made from the same location/plant I'm sure. That's not the issue.
and now my housing separation is getting worse. first it was all tight and no creaks, then creaky and squishy on the left side (the lower left corner, could be squeezed). a day later the right bottom corner is squishy, but not as bad as the left.
last night the left side has increased to up to half the left side being slightly separated.
i'm almost 93.269% sure this thing's going back... if it does i'll have a dock and skin for sale at a pretty good price.
as reliable as their laptops are rated it's actually disappointing to hear all these mfg problems with their tablet. it's not like this is their first tablet.
I'm debating on sending mine in.
What we really need is an official announcement from Asus stating "yes, the first batch had manufacturing issues but the next batch is better. If you are experiencing XXX (IE: Light Leaks) Then please send it back for a full replacement"
I too have light leakage and my backing is lose around the bottom where the dock goes. It bubbles a bit. My dock also doesn't want to stay connected when the trackpad is in use (firmware coming i hear) so...
I know Asus responds to a few of these posts and all but a total PR about the issues would be far better than 100's of reviews stating "X Problem" and then people just overall assume the product is poorly built...which it is currently.
I do love it tho, but next one released with a keyboard at a reasonable price might find me as a buyer and Asus might find this one on the way back for a full refund.
My SD card won't eject. I feel it springing in a bit when I push it in, but it doesn't pop out.
Not a HUGE issue, but a definite QC failure. I may check with BB in a couple weeks to see if they have any stock and exchange it, but if not, it's only a minor issue. I slapped a 16GB card in there and I rarely remove it. I'll mostly use the USB ports and full size SD card slot in the dock.

[Q] Anyone else hugely disappointed with the build quality?

So I was dying to get one of these on launch day and when I finally received mine, it had a squeaky left bezel, bad light bleed on the left and right, and minor light bleed on the other sides. The squeaking and light bleed was so bad that there was no way I was keeping it.
Luckily, I received another one the next day. The bezel on this one was good, no squeaks and the light bleed was very tolerable. It also has a couple of specs of dust under the screen but they haven't really bother me. So I returned my first one and have been using this one for two weeks now and have been loving it.
I then received the 32GB version today. The bezel has no squeaks but there are multiple specs of dust under the screen and there are also a couple of tiny chips in the glass. WTF!!
I really wanted the 32GB version but after my experience with the three tablets I am just sticking with the one I've been using and returning it. I think $400 is the max I want to spend on a product with horrible quality control. I'm even worried that the one I've been using is gonna start developing problems over the next few months! I'm also afraid of exchanging because there is a good chance the replacement will be the same or worse than the original.
It's just very frustrating. I can't remember any other product I've purchased that had so many quality control issues right out of the box. Anyone else feel the same way I do?

At least your touch screen is working! (link)
Anyway, the best way to have ASUS improve their quality control is probably returning all the bad ones (so that they are financially concerned), as well as calling their customer service number to complain.
Sorry to hear you have had problems but I must say my experience (thus far) has been excellent my unit feels solid, no dead pixels, no dust and minimal light-bleed, just a touch at the bottom and the right side that is only even slightly noticeable on rare occasions.
Only thing I'm not 100% happy about is the battery life, the dock seems to drain like a tap! Maybe it will settle down after a few cycles and I think a firmware fix is in the pipeline for this.
mine is fine. No issues with build quality here. First batch model by the way.
If u wanna see some serious light bleed try a ipad2 under full brightness. Its extremly worse than my transformer

Other than some minor light bleeding in the bottom middle and feeling a little fragile, mine is fine. The light bleed is less than I am used to from an iPad.

It's all the luck of the draw. Some peep will have bad luck & get bad ones, while the lucky ones get a perfect model.
QA on anything have gone to ****s over the years. They know they can get away with it. They just produce & ship. If they get a return, the will just ship out another, etc.....

Very true. Both r ips. U won't get iphone/galaxy quality led screen here. Ips is really good quality, best among tablets, but its still lcd based, with backlight. U won't get a 10.1" samoled screen for 400 lol. My light bleed is only barely noticeable in pitch dark, with 60% brightness.

Xreflection, got mine from Walmart last Wednesday when they had that brief selling period (after 6 previous cancellations I received from various places)...arrived 'next day' on Friday. It's great! No screen bleeding, pixels are fine, case is fine - I'm well pleased!
And Yelp I was a little worried, too. But, it's great...so snappy on the wifi where I know having iPad1 had a lot of wifi problems that I returned it- I don't with this-happy customer! Have fun!
I returned my second TF due to a speaker failure issue. I returned my first due to the speaker volume out of sync issue. Im not sure if its a problem with pieces from same batch. Im scouting again online hopefully to get a peice from subsequent batches maybe which wont have the issue. I like the experience on the device though

Very happy with mine! I have slight light bleed at the bottom left but that's the only issue. Doesn't bother me though as I only see it when it's a black screen which isn't very often.
Mine is fine and I am loving it. The toshiba folio 100 was a pig and deserved all the bad press.
This is a million times better user experience for me and lots of the apple fans are complaining too, if they can't get it right with ips, who can?
If asus keep developing and get a decent quad core with ips to market, then i will defiantly upgrade.
Apple ips light bleed
Another apple light bleed story
I can see why you might be disappointed, Its not perfect, but it is the best one i have used.
I bought two TF's and one dock. The first TF went sleep and never woke up. I sent it to ASUS, they still have it. My second is running great. No issues with it whatsoever. The dock works great also. I'm very happy with the build quality of all three items.

[Q] To RMA or not to RMA...

that is the question. I've been using my 32 GB Transformer since it arrived on May 12, and I have to say that overall I'm a huge fan. Since I have seen so much on these boards about the various QC issues, I gave my tablet the once-over almost immediately. The speakers seem fine, no SoD, etc. The only defects I found were about 4 points of light along the left and bottom of the tablet when held in landscape. These show up at about 80-100% brightness with a dark background (not a black jpg), and are not terribly invasive. However, as I use the tablet more, it is a bit annoying just to know they're there. I've also experienced a bit of screen flicker (only with Angry Birds so far), but suspect that this may be more of a software/rendering issue. So the question I have to ask myself is "Do I send it back?" I've heard a number of stories on these boards and elsewhere of people who RMA'ed, waited, and got back a poorer product than they started with. I can live with a little light bleed, but I'm not sure I want to. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
--SemTechie
I'm kind of in the same boat. I've got a single hot pixel and obvious light bleed that is mainly noticable with black/dark backgrounds. If I send it back to the retailer I could end up waiting a month or MORE for a replacement that may have the same or worse issues. And then what happens? Would the retailer take it back and keep this back-and-forth game up till I recieved a tablet that has no isses? I doubt it. I'm thinking that maybe I should call Asus and see what they have to say about the backlight bleed on the tablet.
No matter what you do you will be taken care of, if you RMA it now or in 6 months from now. Asus has great warranty support. They even pay for the shipping away to them for RMA. Most companies make you eat that cost.
Seems like the QC issues are widespread throughout the TF supply, which means the manufacturing process is flawed / needs correction. So, RMA'ing now might not yield good results. Might be better to wait a couple months to RMA, assuming that ASUS would actually address and correct the QC issues.
I've noticed some light bleed in a couple spots when cranking up the brightness, but since I don't usually have the brightness over 50% and I don't tend to stare at black backgrounds I'm just brushing it off....for now. When I read that customers are getting TF's RMA'd w/ new TF's w/out any issues, then I'll consider RMA'ing.
I am also waiting to RMA.
My HDMI port is really unreliable and the connection will be detected and dropped constantly if you touch it at all. If you jiggle it just the right way it will immediately put the tab into a SOD. I've already called ASUS to get the issue on record but I told them I'm waiting to RMA until after I've heard of other's successfully repair experiences.
I only have very minor light bleed and a tiny creak in the top left of the chassis, both a non-issues but the HDMI port sucking really bothers me.
Light bleed is pretty common to bigger ips displays. Do a search for iPad light bleed and you will see what I mean.

This is exactly the problem. People go looking for trouble, and trouble is what they'll find.
I'm having same issue. At first I didnt' want to think of it and didn't try to look for it. But whenever I start some apps and the screen is dark. I can see som light bleed on the side and one very annoying one in the middle of the screen about an inch long. I can live with the sides...but in the middle of the screen is pretty hard to accept.

[Q] Blue blotches on screen?

Hi, I I tried searching for this issue but couldn't find any thread specific to my problem. In darker lighting and on dark images or video I notice some bright blotches in the left center of my screen. It's a pain watching videos with it, but does not impede use of the device. Forgive me if this is common light bleed, but I thought that was exclusive to the edge of the device. Is there any fix I can do on my own or should I try and rma?
I would personally suggest an RMA, that doesn't look right somehow...
U have heavy lightbleed on the top and bottem left side of your screen.
But those blobs in the middel should not be there.
I would suggest a RMA

I had those on my 16GB that I RMA'ed....now my 32GB that I got as an exchange is starting to do it as well.
Starting to regret giving Asus another chance. Never trusted their products before and with good reason......
Thanks guys I'm going to try and return it to Fry's and get the new samsung galaxy tab instead.
You're the third person I've seen with this issue in the past week which is an alarming trend to say the least.
Did it develop over time? Was it there in the beginning? Check your serial number on the box for the revision code (starts with B, EX: B5O, B4O, B6O), which is it?
Definitely RMA. It's unacceptable when there's tons of light bleed on the edges but when it's in the center that's just ****ed.
Looks like I'm too late to return, I'll have to RMA. The serial number is B4O, and I suddenly noticed it, though it's quite possible that it happened over time, I don't recall it being there when I got it.
I am having the same issue, though not as bad. I will try to post pics when I get time.
I just can't decide if a RMA is worth it.... sigh.
My Serial starts with B4O as well.
Edit: Is this actually light bleed or something else? It looks like the IPS screen was impacted before install.
I just sent one back for having a white blob in the middle of the screen about 4mm in diameter I assumed that was light bleed of some description there was plenty round the edges too..
The really worrying thing is the replacement that has just arrived, if I apply light pressure on back of tablet about two inches above asus logo it looks like something is pushing against the screen you get all those rings and what looks like a rainbow effect. I noticed it when docked and moving the screen back and forth the same effect occurs.. I never saw this on my other one, is this just cos the unit is thin and flexes or is it another badly put together tab?
I love this product, why cant it just work

I only notice mine at near full brightness, and with the room pitch black. They are pretty small too. I think I may just try to live with it, as it seems RMA isn't a 100% fix either. I'm afraid I'll be without it for 10-15 business days, and possibly end up with something worse!

That's ridiculous. I shouldn't be afraid of more problems after sending my unit in as a RMA. I think I am just going to hold off and reevaluate the issues in a few months. I'm just worried that the dust in my screen will continue to get worse and worse.
Can anyone speak for a device with a different serial? Also, should I wait and see if ASUS actually fixes it, or RMA as soon as possible? On a side note I thought for RMA they would send me another one and I'd ship this one back when I got the other one, does ASUS not do this?

What's your S/N prefix on the replacement?
This is how it will play out:
1. You call Asus and set up an RMA with the extremely rude customer service.
2. You pay return shipping (about $14-$20) to ship it back to them.
3. They take two weeks to wait for parts and then a week to repair and send it back to you.
4. They end up replacing the LCD and not doing a replacement for the whole unit. You get a "repair", not a "replacement".
5. If you so much as leave a single ding on the unit the service center will mark it OOW (Out of Warranty) and claim no liability for repairs because you damaged it.
At this point the light bleed is so bad you really have no choice.

So at this point my options are to RMA and most likely not get a fix, keep it and try to ignore the lightbleed, wait for better manufactoring/repair and then RMA, or sell it for $180 on Gazelle or maybe more on Ebay/Amazon and use that to buy the thrive or tab instead. I'm leaning towards the first and maybe the last, but I'd be paying about $750 on the last one (calculating new tablet price by adding old price and subtracting the difference.). Suggestions?
Just noticed this on my transformer. It's barely a month old! Gonna take it down to the service centre tomorrow. Ridiculous.

How'd this work out for ya? I was curious how the Galaxy camp was doing so been reading through the Galaxy 10.1 forums, geez I thought we had problems, lots of similar complaints over there about build quality, keyboard lag, reboots, etc and worse of all evidently alot of them have what they call Newtons Rings effect on the tab where the top glass presses against the LCD and makes water looking blotches some of them over half the screen and it changes with temperature lulz. I have seen that stuff before on anything with an Otterbox Defender case with that built in screen protector, those always do that and it's hideous I couldn't live with my tablet doing that.
I have just sent my tf101 back for the newton rings effect you describe.. Maybe galaxy tab ain't the answer either then

So, who has -not- had problems with their Transformer?

I bought a Transformer yesterday, and I have some pretty severe backlight bleed. I'm either going to exchange or return it tonight.
I understand that people with problems with their device will be much more vocal than people who haven't run into any issues, but the number of posts I've seen talking about display or speaker issues is kind of worrying me, especially when I can go to the Thrive forum and see zero or near zero topics about hardware issues. Does anyone here have a Transformer with no problems? Or do they all have some issue and should I look at a different tablet?

No issues whatsoever with mine, although I haven't actually went looking for light bleed. Certainly, I've not noticed it in normal use, which is the only place it would bother me.

I have small light-bleed but it's only visible on a completely black screen with the brightness turned right up and the lights in the room switched off. That's not my normal use case so it doesn't bother me.
I have my Transformer since 2 months now. The hardware is perfect, there is no Lightbleed, no cracking, no dust under the screen and the speakers are o.k. One little problem is Honeycomb, it is not so good as it could be but its getting better with every update. Rooting was no problem and there are no issues when flashing other roms. Last week i bought the dock and there is also nothing wrong with it.
I am very happy with my new Transformer and dont whant to be without it anymore.

A big believer in realism!
My wifi works perfectly
ADW EX works perfectly
Opera Browser works perfectly
But i also don't believe in new automatically equals better, so i haven't installed 3.2.
Wouldn't no about browser typing lag, as i'm the slowest freakin typist ever
I've had no issues with my tablet.
I have just RMAd the dock, as it was a B50 and had the power drain issue, but the tablet on it's own has been great.
very minimal light bleed, but nothing major.
Out of curiosity, hows the ROM dev over with the Thrive? Im wondering if there is more development over there than there is with the TF..
And if so, if having several Roms/mods to play with, keep user more content; So much so, that they overlook minor details..
Maybe were just bored over here in TF world
I have a b60 transformer and keyboard dock and I am very happy with all. I had a small spec of plastic in the screen, flicked screen with my finger and now it has gone and never returned.
Not seen any light bleed and have no problems with build quality.
I only had the creak before, until I learned to look for the light bleed in the dark. It's not that bad, but it feels horrible when you look for it,
Certainly not me ;-) After 5 weeks trying to find a tablet and dock to actually purchase, I bought the only one I could find - a 32 GB version. Why the heck I didn't just give up and wait for the next generation, I'll never know.
Significant light bleed but that doesn't really bother me. But then I discovered the dock battery draining issue with my turned off tablet and that really started to bother me. Then the volume up key on the tablet stopped working and that kind of annoyed me. Then the charger stopped charging both the dock and the tablet and that was end of my using it altogether ... except that somehow the charger started working again on the tablet (and not the dock) so I could use it again. But now it's stopped charging the tablet once again.
I know I have to RMA this ****. Still have to find the receipts and packaging. Maybe I can ship it along with my Asus P8P67 Deluxe motherboard which never worked right from day 1 and has caused me endless grief. Yeah, Asus is pretty much my least favourite company right now...
I love my transformer.
There was some light bleeding at the bottom by the buttons but for some reason the other day it vanished. I have installed the Asus case that has the tapered edge and flap. Maybe the pressure is fixing it.
That with Prime 1.6, the thing is a beast. I'm out of town for work over the next 2 weeks. No reboots or weirdness. I have my PC laptop and my LG G2x setup with wifi sharing so my TF is grabbing internet from one of those devices.
It just works so good I'm afraid to flash it to a 3.2 rom.
I found thumb keyboard better over SwiftKey X and I'm flying. The Office suite allows me to check all my work related documents on the go and has been a lifesaver.

Minor issues...
I have a little bit of light bleed, but it's only noticeable on black backgrounds, with dim ambient light, at certain angles. The speakers aren't as loud as I'd like, but I don't see how speakers that small could be louder. Overall I'm very pleased with mine, especially considering it's what, half as thick as the Thrive?
Not half as thick, but it does feel a lot thinner. It's because Asus designed the tablet to slant from thick (in the center) to thin (in the edge). It's so pretty .
I have problems with the tf, and not only with one unit, because now I am using the third unit (replaced the two previous).
The first was countinually rebooting when suspended (may be software, but used a nandroid of it with the second and no problem)
The second has light bleed and the upper part of the touch screen was bad.
With the third unit has sound balance problem, but I can live with it.
Conclusion
The quality control is bad, but I like this tablet.
Sorry for my english
No issues, I haven't really looked to see if I could find light bleed, but I love this thing
on my second tf
my first one quit charging after 4 days. No keyboard dock.
The one I have now has more light bleed than my first one. That one was a B60, current one is a B50.
No issues to report, although I have not checked on the battery drain issue with the dock (B5O). Still I really like this tablet and use it for work.
No problem here. Running Prime 1.7
Just checked for light leak. took a picture in a black room with brightness all the way up and on the left lower side i noticed it.
been mashing the power and volume buttons all day to see if i can break it(still within 30 days). No issues yet.
