[Q] Considering leaving verizon - Thunderbolt General

Similar to another posters issues, I have now had three HORRIBLE refurb TB's, added to the horrible refurb TP2's that I had about a year ago. Verizon (mike peir is his name) told me that if this last one wouldn't fix my problems, (random RB's, unable to get GPS lock, and for some unknown reason I lost lte) Then they would send me a new one. Welllllll, I called mike on his personal work number and he feeds me some bs of "well after reviewing your account again I don't know that I can honor that." Dude has flat out lied to me. Also, I spend about 200 a month though VZW where I would only be spending about 165 after discounts and such through sprint. I understand that the wimax isn't lte, but I can save money, and if I'm going to get crappy(lying) customer service though both, what's the point in spending an extra 500 dollars a year? I just want some feedback as to what I should do? What would you do if you were in my situation? Also, I have sent back the refurbs each time instead of my phone because they were all, externally, in worse condition than mine. And one had the same SW issues as mine. Will post pics later.

It's a software issue, just wait for the update. As far as sprint being cheaper of course they are. No carrier can compete with VZW on service so they have to compete on price.

the issues you are talking about have all been discussed her and like crazyhtown says will be fixed in a software update soon. OR you could grow a pair and just root the dang thing and flash a different radio, worked for me. I had the EXACT same issues with my Tbolt after the OTA update, flashed a different radio and it was solved

Was rooted when I lost 4g. And the GPS still wouldn't lock. The only thing that rooting fixed was random reboots. When I was on das bamf 1.7 remix I lost 4g and couldn't get it back. I have tried everything to fix the 4g issue, that was the kicker. I was dealing without GPS, but what's the point in having a LTE device if you can't use it? Now I'm back stock it 4g still isn't back. I have tried enabling and disabling eharp, and obviously I have tried turning on LTE/evdo. (I'm in a heavily covered 4g area and drive from one side of that area to the other every day. I live in north charlotte and drive to south charlotte. 28031 to 28273) I don't know why I lost it, but it did. I have pulled the sim card and reseated it, and that didn't fix it either. But I refuse to take a device that is not in at least as good of condition as the one I am sending back.

Try talking to a manager. I have, on rare occasion, had to resort to this. I usually have no problems with the CSRs, but when I begin getting inconsistent information that doesn't seem right, I talk to them.

How long have you been a Verizon customer? Have you ever had Sprint 'service'?
Is there any substantial WiMAX coverage in your area? Or is it spotty at best?
If no substantial WiMAX in your area, I would just tell Verizon to give you a good 3G phone until they can provide a reliable LTE network & phone. One can usually negotiate a solution with Verizon. Escalate as high as you need to until you find someone that can work out a solution.

I finally got the guy who I referenced in my first post to honor what he told me to begin with. He called me back about 20 mins ago and apologized for telling me something he shouldn't have, then said he "looked further into my account" and could "honor what he promised Saturday". He was supposedly a call center manager. Because he was who I was escalated to on Saturday. They are sending me a new phone now. I guess I'm happy, but it seems like an awful lot of effort just to get the guy to do what he promised he would do previously. Which the way he called back makes me think he got his hand slapped by his superior, because he apologized like 20 times for promising something "he wasn't supposed to."

5 years with VZW. I had sprint(nextel actually) before that. Then ATT before that. ATT is the only one I would never do business with again. I mainly left sprint because my now fiancée was on verizon and I was blowing through minutes just talking to her. Between the two of us I usually average about 1000 m2m now, and that's down from what we used to talk. (more like her talk, and I listen. lol) So I really needed to make a move because of that.
Wimax is pretty solid where i'm at, it just doesn't go as far north as LTE does. It drops about 10 miles north of here. However, where I commute and live I am always in wimax.
Verizon has appeased me for now, I'm still not sure if I will stay when my contracts are up. I guess the guy thought I was bluffing before I asked how much my etfs were and started giving him my card number.

My suggesstion is to stick it out with vzw. I recently switched to vzw from AT&T and paid a heftly cancellation fee to do so because I was fed up with their service and shopped around before landing on Verizon. This was money well spent. I made the right choice, as someone else said above, others may be cheaper but I doubt if anyone will be better. Once the update comes for the TB all will be well.

Thanks for the responses, I think I'm going to stick it out for a few more months and see how it goes. But, right now VZW is on a very short leash. They did, after hours on the phone, finally make good on their promise. Sorry for bogging down the forum, and again, thanks for all the answers.

If you think you're going to have a better experience with replacement phones on AT&T, or Sprint, or T-Mobile, good luck. You won't. Unless you visit a warranty center for AT&T, you won't get a working phone in any quicker timeframe then you could with Verizon.

Stop calling mike. Call corporate. My bud threatened to cancel 5 accountant over a MOTO Droid dropping calls when he found out a Droid x was coming...short of it is he had a Droid x 1 week before they dropped. His business skills were impressive...shady but impressive cause his d1 never dropped a call lol

I'm not saying they will be greener. But a 500 A year savings might be worth leaving if I'm going to have issues no matter where I go. Maybe I'm wrong, it just seemed today like VZW wasn't worth their word. Like I said though, he did rectify it. So I'm appeased for now. We will see if I have any more issues. If not, then ill stay, if so, then I leave.

I came from from sprint after being a 7 yr customer. Year their CS sucks but the plans are gonna save you $ no matter what. I was lied to from a Radio Shack employee who said that At&T had the cheapest plans and after finding out the truth we canceled our contract with AT&t and had to go with Verizon since we did an early termination with sprint. I regret it every second. Sprint always has the best phones out the fastest. they are deffinetly on the cutting edge of cell phones. the 3d evo comes out in a few weeks and you can record, take pics in 3D and the whole phone is 3D without and glasses. Plus you get unlimited everything for $69 a month. No throtteling like verizon and no data limits with At&t. Sprint is by far the best way to go. IMO

What does having different phones that maybe you enjoy a few from have anything to do with quality of service? Sprint has slowest network and honestly with Tmobile and AT&T doing their thing I honestly think Sprint is at the bottom of the food chain. Yes I enjoy some phones on other carriers service but will I give up decent CS for it? No way but we all know everyone had had good, bad or no issues with their carrier so again this is to each their own.
Issue here is same as most other cell phone companies they are representing the developers of the phones so they need to protect their investment in making it hard to get replacement devices when you are outside the 14 days. Sprint, AT&T and VZ all have huge flaws when it comes to warranty replacement but when it comes to generally trying to take care of the Customer I still without a doubt think VZ does the best. You need to be in full control of what you want a justifable resolution when you call and ask for a Manager. Do not take no for an answer and let them know they need to stand by the quality expected from a brand new phone.
Yes phones have flaws but hourly reboots is not acceptable. Replacement devices that are not put together right is not acceptable. Lying to customer to put them off to next CS rep is not acceptable. Making promises and not following up on them and trying to give customers the run around is not acceptable.
I had SO many issues with launch of this phone most people don't believe me. Yet I kept trying to get phone without issues I has having. Non fuctional power buttons, displays not aligned on phone even, BAD light leaking from bottom of the case. So I have placed 6 total orders from Customer Care since March 17th. Have 5 device swaps at the store and they gave up and put me in touch with phone tech support. After 2 months of awaiting my bill to be fixed and having to contact HTC on how bad VZ was handling my situation I got resolution and taken VERY good care of.
Result was follow up Customer Service rep from HTC calling and offering me any HTC device I wanted on VZ network and they would take care of VZ. So I said I want to be locked into 4G data plan and I want only the Thunderbolt and will not wait for next device months to come. They contacted VZ on my behalf and guess what I got a Manager overide contact renewal which means being I was out of orginal 14 days and lack of 5 supervisor call backs VZ had to put me in a new contract date and send me a new phone for free. So I have spare TB that just needs the Software update and has peeling on kickstand. Free extended battery and all my shipping charges were removed from EVERY order.
Point is there are tons of good phones out there but if you want the most reliable Customer service SADLY you must speak with Management 75% of the time to get results you expect for your situation. I did not back down and I patiently waited and today I get my new devices from VZ.

Yep. Oftentimes the key to resolving a problem is primarily finding the right person to speak with. True at both Verizon and HTC. When I was on Sprint, I can remember waiting on hold forever before even speaking to the first level of customer support.

There is no service like Verizon. They are the leaders for a reason. And sprint is cheap and have the least customers for a reason...

What the heck was I thinking????

Walked into a Verizon store so my girlfriend could get a new phone. As the salesman was helping her out, he started up a conversation with me about who I had service with and what phone I was using.
Like a gun slinger pulling out his shiny nickle plated revolver I smuggly produced my fully hacked and modded Samsung Captivate. He was seriously impressed with it. Especially that I had a 2.2.1 ROM loaded on it with all the bells and whistles.
Then the fun was over and he hit me where it hurt....."How much are you paying each month for your service?"
To shorten up this story I will just skip to the part where he offered me a service plan on my 3 lines (2 of which are Captivates) that was almost too good to be true, and before I new it, my poor cappy was now nothing more than a hopped up mp3 player, and I was the new owner of a Droid X.
Its been 2 days, and I have yet to have a conversation where the phone doesn't shut down in the middle of it. I have flashed the latest and greatest ROM over on the Droid X side but it still reboots at will. I have found numerous people with the same problem after searching Google, but no fixes for it.
Coincidentally, the second droid is doing the same thing.
To be honest, even without the reboot issue, the DX just doesn't compare to my Captivate in any way.....well except for one. The GPS is stinking flawless on the droid.
I want to drive by the Verizon store and throw all three phones through the window and go back to AT&T begging them to take me back without either of them charging me out the yahoo in penalties.
Does anyone know if I can switch back without any issues or is Verizon and AT&T both gonna stick it to me? I made the purchase 7pm Sunday the 16th.
Its worth mentioning that two numbers have been ported over to Verizon and one will not be for another week or two. So technically I still have an account with AT&T.

At&t should be able to restore your numbers on your account. Basically everything goes back to the way it was before you ported. Then you should get credited back for the ETA fees if they already billed you for it. There may be reactivation fees though...
Doing so would also automatically cancel your Verizon account so you would need to return all the equipment back to them otherwise they'll charback your credit cards for the retail prices of the phones.

I mean, I love my Captivate, but I don't think that ATT's service is worth the money or hassle. If my workplace wasn't paying and forcing me to stay, I would have jumped ship 4 years ago.
(Why didn't you get a HTC Droid Incredible? What were you thinking? )

You should have 30 days to go back to Verizon and tell them thanks, but no thanks.
Verizon gives you 30 days to try out new phones. all you have to do is return it and they will charge you a pro-rated amount for the service that you used, nothing else. No etf's or any penalties. And I'm sure AT&T would be more than willing to take you back, especially if you are coming back from verizon.

I have no problems with att, and verizon's 4g speed is still less than the six mb/s att's 3g pulls down. I seed no reason to switch to verizon. slower, less coverage, customer service is crap, phone are ****e... Att has been nothing but gold to me.

Verizon's theoretical speed is upwards of 15Mbps last I checked. AT&T's 3G coverage seems to be pretty shoddy for me; often when I'm travelling, I am forced to EDGE; it doesn't really bother me that much, but means my internet is heavily crippled. For customer service, ATT's bricked 4 of my phones and asked me to pay. I don't think it gets much worse than that; at least I managed to force them to upgrade my RAZR V3 to a V3XX after it just died within 2 months, then to send me a new one when they bricked that while unlocking it, then sending me a new LG Shine after bricking that while unlocking it when I owned it. Worst was when they bricked my Bold 9700 when they told me to update it after my data got spontaneously wiped.
AT&T has no good phones save for the Captivate and the iPhone (both of which are debatable at this point), so I have no clue what your point there is. Any of Verizon's Droids destroy both.

i also hate at$t, but in my area it is great!! and yeah i want the infuse! i need a bigger screen,atrix will be aswome im sure, just root, flash and love life
I got a free dell streak from my dell Rep and it is easily day shiznit. It came with froyo preloaded and it is unlocked. Works great on att but there is no compatiable software for front facing webcam.
Can't beat it really. And the GPS works instantly

I talked to the verizon rep that sold me my phones. He replaced the dx's (which have worked flawlessly btw), and told me to give it a couple of weeks before I made my move.
I have to admit, I'm liking the new coverage. I'm not getting the 2 and 3mgs download speeds I was getting on my cappy, (which I could only get in very few areas) but I am getting about 1.5mgs on the dx almost everywhere with verizon coverage.
The dx isn't a elegant a my cappy and I have had to jump through a couple of hoops to get a custom rom installed, but it is just as functional, and the gps has been spot on.
I miss my captivate pretty bad, but as the initial shock is wearing off, verizon doesn't seem do bad.
I still have a couple of weeks to decide and my cappy is still sitting on my dresser just incase.

Just to correct everyone about the "30 days" to return/cancel your service with Verizon. On Sunday the 16th (the day the OP purchased his phone) Verizon implemented a 14 day (not 30) day period to avoid the ETF.
I know this because I work at a national retailer who sells Verizon phones.
That explains why the rep said "just give it a couple more weeks." Wow do I hate people who try to screw others over (the rep in this case).
"You may return or exchange wireless devices and accessories purchased from Verizon Wireless within 14 days of purchase. A restocking fee of $35 ($70 for netbooks and tablets) applies to any return or exchange of a wireless device (excluding Hawaii)."

I know 2 people with Droid X's and TBH they are horrible. I'm not saying SGS phones don't have their own unique issues but the "official" 2.2 for the Droid X is seriously just bad. They both have random shutdowns/reboots and they are sluggish compared to SGS phones. The one lady I know used my cappy and didn't understand why her droid was was so much slower...at everything. I told her that's what she gets for buying a phone because it's "Cool" because they have a commercial for it ever other commercial break. Also did you look into if you get a discount through ATT for your job? I get 20% off my bill (5 phones, 3 cappys, iphone3g, crap flip phone) for a company I haven't worked for for like 4 years now.
As for the Streak, I burned all my Jinco's 15 years ago and bought jeans that fit. I don't care how great it supposedly is or isn't, a 5" phone is to big to fit in a normal pair of jeans comfortably and not look retarded.

That might be true Mike but my money says you'll be pulling your hair out trying to port 2.3 over to the Atrix with its locked up boot loader when the Bionic is to be released with it already.
And its almost a sure bet you can tack on about 6 to 8 months on AT&T's promised release date on any phone they advertise.

This is correct. He told me this Tuesday. I bought the phones Sunday. So I have until the next saturday to make up my mind.
Just so you know, Verizon's is CDMA which means it will have weaker call signal and stronger data signal. The signal bars only report your data signal, not your voice call signal. It can be very deceiving.
Also, you cannot use data while using the phone to talk to someone. So you can't say, "Let me look it up right now." Because it will just say "No Data Connection."
if you decide to stay with verizon, make sure you check your bill each month. vzw likes to add bogus fees that most of their customers don't even notice. this happened to both me & my gf (on separate accounts)
First Verizon's return policy is 14 days after that etf is 375$ no matter where u r n contract, 2nd they don't have a 4G phone that has 4G speeds nor do any carrier. ATT speeds are greater at 3G than all competitors except tmo areas that are using their upgraded 3g network they claim is 4g and they r barely faster but they have a small area their coverage covers without losing Singal since they "changed their 3g".
And who would do the droid x over the cappy? That sales man must be good at what be does because stock the cappy kills droid x in all benchmarks and speed tests for network since Verizon 3g network is the slowest of all major carriers. Do a speed test bet it don't do more then 1.2Mbps down when I can get 5Mbps on my cappy with ATT.
ATT 4G when it is rolled out will do 4-5x faster then what it does now which is suppose to be 7Mbps x 4 so around 28Mbps down is insane... my phone is already faster then a lot of dsl providers...
Anyway not flaming just wanted to put my 2cents in with facts. My brother owns a droid x its not bad but cappy is one nice piece of hardware

Returning g2x probably leaving tmo

I will be returning the g2x and leaving to sprint.
Yesterday I received my 3rd unit. Now I have never had the other 2 past any remorse period.
The phone had finger prints on it. Ding! First flag.
I mean crusted finger prints. Like food leaves on a phone.
Then the after removing the screen protector there are clear hairline scratches in the center bottom part of the screen.. like its been dropped and the polished.
The scratches still very visible.
Tmo sent me a refurbished phone.
I was told its showing as new. But there may have been a mix up at the factory and a refurbished unit may have been sent.
Well that person should stop eating cheetoes before packaging phones.
I'm getting my refund. I'm leaving my grandfathered plan of my faves 89.00 a mnth.
To sprint for unlimited everything 79.00 a mnth.
I just want a working product. I never received a NEW working product like I paid for.
And now I'm getting used scratched up replacements.
Ill be looking to Sprint honestly.

Compare the level of complaints between T mobile and Sprint, I think it is really clear how bad Sprint is. Go to the forums at Sprint.com and see. People are REALLY angry. Myself included. Then look at T mobiles. People complain, of course. But not nearly at the same level. Not even close.
I was a customer from 2007 to 2009. When there was a huge error on my bill, I told them my contract was expired and I'd be leaving. I had bills to prove when I had signed my contract, yet they informed me I had several months left on it.
I waited that two months out and ran from them as fast as I could. I heard "That's what our records indicate" so many times I throw up in my mouth just thinking about it. It was awful.
Stupidly, I went back this past April. I was having issues w/ MetroPcs and the Samsung Indulge.
I just got through with a horrible horrible 3 weeks dealing with a bunch of jerks at Sprint.
I invoked the guarantee and left. Triple checked that I owed nothing.
Got a bill yesterday.The full months bill past due.....and they said I owed JUST the insurance to this months due.
Called Sprint really upset. The rep assured me he'd deleted it and that I owed nothing. After I railed about how really bad my experience was, he assured me that Sprint was sorry and hated to see me go. He was SO sorry that he would delete the "unexplained" six dollars left due on my account!!!! This right after he's just assured me my account was zeroed out! Unbelievable.
Be afraid. Really afraid. My experience was bad. Read the posts at their own forums.

You will love sprint. I've been a customer for over 5 years. And as for the 400 anytime minutes, that's obviously 400 anytime minutes to LAN lines because we have free "any mobile, anytime" minutes. Plus nights start at 7pm for us, not 9pm like T-Mobile.

Yes. But for 10 dollars more I don't have to be worrying about anything (79.99 truly unlimited plan). In the other hand your precious 69.99 plan can cost you a headache. Besides if your in xda you have to know that Tmobile has the best android phones.

I switched from Sprint to T-Mo not too long ago, and all I can say is that my experience with Sprint was horrid at best (really, does anyone truly like their wireless provider). Here's my rundown, but of course ymmv:
-Customer "care" was routinely rude.
-Roaming charges would show up on my bills even though I had an unlimited plan w/o roaming.
-It would take several billing cycles to clear up errors.
-Had to jump through multiple hoops to get warranty repairs done.
-Accused of deliberately damaging phone by a Sprint repair technician.
-Was told by Sprint repair technician he couldn't work on my phone bc there was evidence I rooted it, even though I had re-locked the bootloader, placed stock recovery image on phone, deleted root apps, and removed sd card before taking to repair center.
-A couple of dropped calls a day.
-SMS & MMS messages not being delivered or duplicates of messages.
-Slow "3G" network speed.
-Non-existent "4G" even though I lived in a "4G" area w/ an allegedly strong signal.
Need I go on? I'm not saying that T-Mo is the best ever, but imao, it is far superior to Sprint. Maybe VZW would be better, but their plans are just too expensive. Have they really hassled you about the returns? Probably not. It took my 3 tries to get an acceptable G2x; T-Mo never hassled me or busted my balls about it. Should they have quality controlled better w/ the unit they sent you? Absolutely.
My advice would be to stick w/ T-Mo and keep exchanging that bugger until you get an acceptable unit.
Sprint sucked from day 1, and still sucks. I will go back to verizon before I ever choose sprint.

My experiences were PRECISELY like this. And these things are the exact things seen at Sprint.com. Seriously....JUST LOOK THERE.
Knowledge is power. It could not be any more obvious on their own site.
i left sprint, horrible customer service was my main problem. and i like the use of sim cards. i swear sprint has reps in india
sprint messes up on your bill alot, i had to call in alot to get stuff fixed and i dealt with so many prorated charges.. they were cheap tho lol
Experiences will differ from person to person, but I came back to T-Mobile from Sprint for the G2x and couldn't be happier (even though my phone has a few problems).
Things I disliked about Sprint:
Awful customer service
3G speeds that are 1mb down or less. If you want faster, you have to turn on the battery sucking 4G. You think our G2x's die fast? Try using any Sprint phone with WiMax enabled for more than 2 hours and get back to me.
Spotty 4G coverage. I live in Houston, and you'd think that since it's a pretty big city, we'd have solid 4G coverage. Nope! Unless you're in a spot that you know has 4G and you're not moving, it's useless. Don't bother using it while driving
Equipment. I'm a GSM fanboy. SIM cards make life 100 times easier.

I just came from 10yrs of Verizon to T-Mobile. My first phone with them was the G2X. I travel in the US very heavily. Ive been very unhappy with their service. Verizon was always dead on reliable when traveling.
I have a trip next week and if its not any better (they said to try a new SIM card) than I will have to leave and go back to Verizon.

There's no doubt Verizon has the best coverage out of all the major carriers. The problem is that they're just too expensive for some people (me)
I came from sprint to TMobile and couldn't be any happier. I get signal at home and work which I didn't with sprint plus for some reason both my evo and epic would not even reach 1mb/s download speeds even with a good 3g signal

Hopefully it was just the SIM card. I have very impressed with T-Mobile coverage.

Can we stop these pointless threads please? Yes we know some people aren't happy with the phone or service but there are many who feel the opposite.

I feel your pain. As of today I have my third g2x on the way.
I know from what I hear sprint is better than it used to be. 10 years ago when I was a freshman at college I changed from what is now t mobile (voice stream back then) to sprint. I was going to a smaller school that was smaller in a small town, scholarships are nice. Sprint was the only carrier that worked down there.
One day I was waiting for a friend to call me so we could go do something and never heard from him. I called him all upset and he asked why my number was showing up differently. He has been trying to call my, but sprint decided to change my area code and not let me know. I called sprint to see what was going on, and they confirmed they changed my area code. I was pretty mad that they did this, and didn't let me know. They informed me that the local telephone company should of let me know. Even back then I knew the local phone company had nothing to do with it. I could see if they might of informed my parents before me because they were paying the bill. So I called my parents to let them know that the area code had changed. I guess they had been freaking out. They could not get a hold of me for 3 days because of the area code change.
Then a couple of months later my phone got broken. I had payed for the insurance in case anything happened to the phone. Well I did get my phone replaced, but at the time I had the most expensive phone that sprint had. Its been so long I don't remember what it was. Well I did get a replacement, but it was the cheapest phone that they carried. I was informed that the insurance just meant that I got a new phone, not the same one I had. Needless to say I was mad, so as soon as my 2 years was up I left and never came back. It is so much simpler now that we can transfer our phone numbers.

Wife and I both got FREE Evo 3D's: Sprint deals you may not know about

OK, so I was all geared up to get the disappointing news because I checked at Best Buy and also on my online Sprint account and both said I'd only get $75 off because I got the Evo 4G last year and I'm only "early upgrade" eligible. I'm posting here because I found Sprint running some incredible deals and I knew nothing about them: perhaps this info will save some people money. I had to go to my local Sprint store to find these deals!
DEAL #1 YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT:
I called my local Sprint store and the customer service was astounding! They said that because I'm a Premier Silver member (most people are so you may be too: I was and didn't even know it), I could get the FULL upgrade: Evo 3D for $199. Why? Because Premiere Silver members got 1 yr full upgrades until just recently so they are "grandfathering" that for at least a while. It's 2 year full upgrade now but if you are a Premier Silver member, they're giving us FULL upgrade price. Don't know for how long though and this must be done in a Sprint store AFAIK as it is an "override" they must do.
DEAL #2 YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT:
They also told me that they have buy backs on a LOT of phones so you don't even have to turn in your old Evo 4G! Turn in a crappy old iPhone instead for almost the same money if you have one! We had an old iPhone 3GS and I turned that in and they give you $134.95 for one of those (with 16GB): so I did that and KEPT my Evo 4G. I love my old Evo and it's only a $15 difference to get rid of an iPhone I'll never touch and keep my Evo. My 10 yo daughter is ecstatic: she was using the old (unactivated) iPhone as an iPod and now she gave me $15 difference and she's loving her "new" Evo. I suspect I'm not the only one with an old smartphone laying around: they take lots of them not just Evo 4G's.
DEAL #3 YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT:
My wife's contract was just up with AT&T. She too had an (activated) iPhone 3GS: this was her (only) cell that she used for over a year. She dumped AT&T and got an Evo 3D the same day I did. Why? Because Sprint PAID HER to own one! She got the same $134.95 credit for the iPhone she turned in and here's deal #3: Sprint gives $125 credit just for porting your cell phone number over from another carrier! I don't know how long this deal lasts either but if you keep your number with Sprint for 60 days, you'll automatically get $125 credit on your bill at that time. So for my wife: it was a new Sprint contract for her so the Evo 3D was $199. Subtract the $134.95 that they give you IMMEDIATELY for her old iPhone 3GS and the cost of her Evo 3D is down to $64. Now after 60 days, she gets the $125 credit for porting her number over to Sprint and all tolled, Sprint will have PAID HER 61 bucks to walk out of the Sprint store with a brand new Evo 3D. Even if your contract isn't up with another carrier, that 61 bucks would help pay most/all of the early termination fee if you're maybe 6 months or less from the end of the contract.
DEAL #4 YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT:
Are you a AAA member? Are you a credit union member? Ask at your Sprint store. BOTH of those (and some others I can't remember) get you a 10% discount on your monthly bill!
Hope this helps some people. I had no idea about these deals and if I had bought from BB, Target, or any of the other places, I would have gotten just about squat and I would have probably paid the full $499 minus the $75 "early upgrade" benefit... and my wife would still be using her pathetic iPhone. She's never used an Android phone and just since yesterday... she's happier than a pig in poo with her new Evo 3D. She'll still reveling in the "My God... I could NEVER think of doing this with my iPhone".
I'm BEYOND impressed with the customer care I got at my Sprint store! This is how a customer should be treated! Oh, and the subject of this thread says that my wife and I both got free Evo 3D's because even though I paid $64 for mine after turning in one of the iPhones, her $61 credit that they paid her for walking out with one pretty much makes us even. I think in the end I probably paid a dozen or so dollars more than that actually because you have to pay tax on the full amount... but let's not split hairs.

Edit: BTW if you have Verizon service then you have Sprint service because they both roam freely (and seamlessly) on each others networks. That includes both voice and 3G data.

actually no im on sprint premier and i manually loaded the newest verizon prl and ive been preferred system roaming for about 4months now and sprint hasnt said a word or raised my bill a dime. i did this because sprint service isnt the greatest at my house and i could barely get above 500kbp/s and now look at the difference lol.

wow..interesting deals...I went into a sprint store months ago just browsing before me n the wife now own 2 LG Revo's..anyways..the sales people told me they could enter "special codes" into their system which would save us hundreds..as I re checked at another store and talked to the manager about this..he replied..in about 6 months max when Sprint looks at your application to verify everything..they will see these codes and realize that you dont work for a company discount program type of thing and the codes will deleted..hence you paying just as much as Verizon's family program (yes we now are grandfathered into VZW's unlimited data)...just an FYI incase anyone had one of those deals you could pass up.

You are never charged roaming fees in the U.S. Both Sprint and Verizon roam for free (both cell service and 3G data) on each other's towers. They've been sharing towers for over a year now. We live out in the country and there's a gap in Sprint coverage on the way to my house. I can hold a call easily through the entire area as my phone roams from Sprint to Verizon towers and back to Sprint again. Never notice anything in the call, the call never drops, and you'll never be charged a roaming fee for that.
So unless you throw 4G into the equation (which they don't share, but most of us don't have anyway), being on Sprint is like having the best of both worlds: the coverage of Sprint plus Verizon, with the lower cost of the Sprint contracts.

Don't know about Verizon but Sprint has included free roaming for years in almost all their plans. I will say this there are roaming limits so don't go overboard but this is very hard to do so I don't worry about it too much. I think the data roaming limit is 300MB even though is says unlimited on my bill. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.

My understanding is that the limit is there in case they want to give you the boot. It's kind of arbitrary when they will say enough is enough and tell you to kick rocks. So no they don't charge you I don't think but they reserve the right to show you the door whenever they feel like it.

Why are we the only ones that subsidize phones?

So Verizon releases the GS3 locked and all the other US carriers, and the world for that matter, get an unlocked version. After that Samsung releases a developers edition unsubsidized right from them.
It got me thinking, what if it was always like this. You don't buy the phone from the carrier you buy whatever phone you want from the manufacturer or Best Buy or wherever and as long as it will work on the network you can activate it on whatever carrier. That's how the rest of the world does it, I think we're one of the few if not the only countries that has a set up that subsidizes phones.
Think about it, Manufacturers could concentrate on making phones, instead of making a special phone for each carrier, then going through the hassle of putting their software on it, even packaging would be reduced by standardizing it. Just a few different models to cover different wordwide networks, not 3 or so for the world and 4 or 5 just for the US. Sure they may be expensive at the beginning but the prices will come down and budget phones will appear too that arent absolute crap because you would actually still have to pay for it.
Not to mention having more options as to where yo can get your phone which should also help prices.
Carriers could stop concentrating on what new phone to release and what to add and what to lock down and actually concentrate on improving their networks. Also in theory plan prices should come down too, because you may pay less up front but the extra cost of that phone is built in into everyones plans. I mean they get the money back over the course of the plan by forcing you into a contract, does that make them that much extra money? I mean it must right?
On the surface this looks like it should work. Now In sure there is a reason it wont otherwise it would have happened by now right? But then again the rest of the world does it this way.
Why are we different? Yeah it would be painful at the beginning but I really think that this would be better form everyone in the long run. Wouldn't it be great to just go out and buy whatever new phone you wanted. Not have to wait to see what gets picked up by what carrier. All the complaining about this phone not coming here or that phone not going there gone.

That used to be the inferior way to go though. They were on some off network with spotty coverage and the phone selection was usually garbage. They have come a very long way, but still arent quite there, albeit very close now. It would be nice if everyone did it though. When my contract is up on Verizon next year there is a good chance Ill go prepaid if they take unlimited away which I'm nearly sure they're going to do.

Not quite there?? With straight talk you have the option to use either t-mobile or AT&T. It uses the exact same towers and gets the exact same service as the customers of their carriers! Prepaid has come a long way my friend.

Amen. Unlimited everything for $50 a month, and I'm enjoying it on my i9300. Full AT&T service for a fraction of the cost. I've gone over the safe limit of 2GB and haven't been warned or cut off either. Port your number to Google Voice and you never have to worry about losing it if you get cut off.
A big part of it is control; a bigger part is money.
Despite Sprint and Verizon's 3G being compatible (and commonly sharing towers), neither carrier will allow each others phone to be on their network. They want to ensure that the phone you are using, they (VZ) were paid for (a model that GSM providers cannot (easily) do).
And you best believe that the Dev SIII has VZ's blessing; again, they can block any phone they like, and this phone would not activate on their network if they didn't allow it to. They allow it, because Sammy has assumed all the liability on this one (can't buy it at a VZ store, no worry about warranty issues).
The control comes in, in the form of nice "cheap" phones, getting you to agree to nice long contracts. Far too many people live just for today; they opt for the $200 phone, but agree to a far more expensive contract for 2 years. They know people will only look at the "now" cost, not the total, so it is easy to lure em in...
I have Sprint with TEP. I have 3 lines and had two phones replaced this year, one with a broken speaker and the other the charging port broke off. I don't think a prepaid service would ever do that for me. I'd be stuck shelling out $500+ to replace my phone.
OP is basically asking for how the "rest of the world" does things. And Divine_Madcat got it down best. They want to control their own phones, even though it's sold to you. And they want more money.

I always buy my phone off-contract because I don't want to tied to a contract. Now? I want to buy a pentaband phone so I can get service anywhere I please.

I agree there actually at the point where they are an option now. I said they were very close. The phones they offer are still not the greatest, but I guess that wouldn't matter as you just go get whatever you wanted and had it activated. I don't know though I looked at straight talks coverage map and it looks pretty bad, well not pretty bad but really really bad, if your using an android phone, for whatever reason they have one for non android and one for.

Manufacturers offer warranties as well. There are also many different insurance options out there...ensquared comes to mind...and most of them are cheaper per month with no deductible. Think of it like buying an Iphone straight from the Apple store. Just because you didn't purchase it on AT&T doesn't mean you are screwed if it is defective...

Yeah I know its bad, but I guess the way I see it is it seems bad from everyone. I could see everyone making more money if we went unsubsidized.
Also if I were to go no contract which I will be doing weather I stay with Verizon or not, as I have unlimited, I doing see how I would save any money doing it. They don't change me any less of I don't use their phones, though that would be nice. They actually make more money because the subside fee is built into everyones plans as far as I know.

They would just sell you applecare for you iphone. You would still get protection it would just come from somewhere else.
Hey I'm from Britain, how does it work in the USA with phone then? Here even of you buy it from a carrier you can get it unlocked for say £10 or do it yourself if you do a quick Google search and some reading then it works on all other carriers?

Thanks, that was one of my concerns with prepaid. I have kids with smartphones, they are pretty rough with them sometimes.

TEP is just went up to $11 a month with a $200 deductible. $11 x 24 months x 3 lines = $792, +2 broken phones x ($200) = $1192. If the phones were broken starting from the day the price changed. This is assuming you had the protection from the beginning to the end of your contract.
Square-Trade covers almost any type of device, including phones. 2 years of protection is $125. The deductible is $100. If you had Square-Trade, you would have paid $125 x 3 + 2 broken phones x ($100) = $575. Also, $125 for 2 years of coverage divided by 24 months is $5.21 per month per device vs $11 with Sprint. And if they can't fix it, they'll cut you a check for a new one up to $750.
The only thing they don't cover, I believe, is theft. But let's be honest, how often are you robbed? And I've personally never lost a phone because I watch out for my $600 device.

Check those coverage maps, Maybe I'm used to Verizon but the coverage on those GSM Prepaid guys especially for smartphones is pretty terrible.

Doesn't work that way here and thats the problem, it should. You buy a phone from the carrier that only works on that carriers network. Even if you get say a Verizon phone that should theoretically work on Sprint, as theyre both CDMA and even share towers sometimes, they wont let you. You would have to get Verzion to unlock your phone first and then even if they did you would have to activate it on sprint which they wont do. They will only activate an ESN that is tied to them. I think they get all the ESNs for the phones they're going to sell and put them in a database. If you have an ESN isn't in the database the phone will not activate. I think the GSM providers basically do the same thing, but I would know I haven't been on GSM for I cant even remember how long.

Straight Talk offers unlimited talk, text, and data for $50 a month after taxes. It comes with full AT&T coverage or full T-Mobile coverage, with your choice of SIM. There's no throttling, and I get the same data speeds that any post-paid AT&T subscriber would get.

I'm sure your right, but if someone went to the straight talk website wanting a smartphone and looked at that coverage map they would think the coverage was awful. They need to update that map.
Still arguing coverage aside the real question is I guess is why does subsidizing happen here but not anywhere else?

I've been over 2GB. Others have gone over 6GB. Nothing has happened. It depends on the subscriber base in your area; if a lot of people are on the same network you're on (meaning AT&T ST SIM and AT&T Post-paid subscribers, for example) you shouldn't strain the network by streaming Pandora for hours and tethering. But hey, I'm in NYC and nothing has happened. I live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan by Radio City Hall/Rockefeller Center. Not even a single warning.

Well you shouldn't be looking at a straight talk coverage map as they don't own towers. You should be looking at an AT&T or T-Mobile coverage map.

[Q] Switching from Sprint to Tmobile

Hello XDA,
I am currently on the last month of my contract with Sprint, it ends 7/31/2014. I am currently on a family plan with 2 other lines, 3 total and at the end of July want to take my number from Sprint and move to Tmobile. I have never switched providers before and I am not sure what to expect.
Do I need to wait until 7/31 to actually switch without paying ETFs?
Can I activate my Sprint Nexus 5 on TMobile? It was purchased at Best Buy and was Sprint labeled, but it should be fine for Tmobile with their Sim correct?
Would I need to do anything with Sprint or if I waited until 7/31 can I just visit a Tmobile store and they take care of porting my number and essentially telling Sprint to kick rocks?

There was some discussion early on that the sprint nexus 5s were different but I believe that was wrong I can look more into it. If you are going to T-Mobile postpaid then the easiest option would be to go in store. When you port your number they say it can take up to 24 hours to be finalized but in my case was about six hours. Keep your sprint account active until the port is complete or you will lose your number. Once the port is complete sprint may cancel your service or give you a new number so call to make sure it's cancelled.

1) You do not have to wait to switch.
2) Probably should look at trading in your Sprint N5 to avoid any CDMA (Sprint) and GSM (T-Mo) issues down the road.
3) You don't need to do anything w/ Sprint. Simply head into T-Mo and let them port and handle from there.
2. Shouldn't be any issue if T-Mobile activates it. Sprint has to activate the CDMA radio differently.

tmobile doesn't have to activate it. just put in tmibiles sim card, boot up. if no signal right away, put in tmobiles apn manually. thats it. most likely youll have a signal right away though.

So say I do this next week, i would assume I would pay an ETF with sprint if i dont wait right?
I was under the impression the n5 was the same (has all bands) and it shouldnt have a conflict, especially if i factory reset

If you do this next week, and your contract isn't up until the end of next month, then they'll cover your ETF (either through reimbursement/credit your t-mo account, not sure how they're handling that these days).
As the other posters mentioned, you SHOULDN'T have any issues if T-Mo activates the phone, but you may want to Google success/fail stories when it comes to taking CDMA-carrier branded phones and activating them on GSM networks.

Yea i read about the etf reimbursement but i believe you have to trade in your current device, which i dont really want to do. My phone isnt branded any different though from what i understand compared to google play store bought n5's

This is incorrect. BYOP customers are inelligible for T-Mobile's ETF promotion, it is only for people who buy new phones from T-Mobile and have an old phone to trade in. If he ports his number from Sprint to T-Mobile as much as one second before his contract expires, he'll most definitely be charged an ETF.

So what exactly happens on 8/1 do i no longer have sprint or does it go month to month. How do i keep my number? sorry for the noob questions, been with sprint and only sprint. August 1st do I just walk into tmobile and do it from there? I have no problem waiting, its only a few weeks away otherwise i could pull the quick switch a roo and activate my galaxy s 3 and do the BYOP but its too much hassle and i can just wait but i just dont want to lose my number

You're right, you do have to trade in your phone.
I'd assume that since you're within 30 days of your contract ending w/ Sprint, you're looking @ roughly under $100 in ETFs across your 3 lines (if you're just canceling the one line on the family plan, obviously that's even cheaper). If it makes more sense keeping the phone you have now and paying those fees as opposed to taking advantage of T-Mo's reimbursement and giving up the phone, that may be the better deal for you.
I left VZW in January of this year w/ 8 months left to go, and paid my ETFs up front, picking up a N5 from them rather than letting them trade my HTC One since they valued it so low. Sold the One on Craigslist for 2x what T-Mo wanted and essentially recouped my ETFs and the first two months of my T-Mo bills.
I'd say hang onto what you've got since you don't have high ETFs.

yea it would be a single line off the family plan
So i think i found my answer, all the contract does is limit me from taking my number to another provider without paying an ETF fee. Once it ends it will go month to month unless i sign another two year agreement, 8/1 is my best opportunity to go into TMobile and have them port my number and setup service with them without paying an ETF fee.
I found a chart with the ETF fees, for 1 month of service remaining on "advanced" devices I would have to pay $100 bucks. I think ill wait until 8/1 and kick sprint to the curb.

So I finally made the switch, did not want to pay the $100 bucks for leaving a month early so my contract with sprint was completed on 7/31 and that same day I went over to tmobile and the process took about 15 minutes, mostly me waiting for sprint 3g to pull up my account details as I forgot to bring my account number with me. about 5 hours later the number was ported over and so far I love it. I get LTE at home where I got no service with sprint, not even 3g. Most of my usual areas where it was slow 3g are now on LTE, LTE spots are actual LTE. Sprint would give me on great signal maybe 10 Mbps, on tmobile i am consistently hitting 40+ and even hitting 50 in most of my areas. Good riddance Sprint, should've ditched you long ago.

yea, anybody can. all you need to do is pop in an lte enabked tmobile sim. you dont need to call them and set it up for your device to work, like sprint.
Sim card and new Nexus 5 in the mail in route to mi casa. Missed my N5 so much. Ha. Bye bye Sprint.
Happy to see T-Mobile is working for you. I been using it for years; so far it has never disappointed me.
