[GAME] Wordplay - a fun word puzzle game - Android Apps and Games

Hello xda android enthusiasts!
I'd like to let everybody know about a free game I developed and published on the market. It's called Wordplay and it's a (imo) really fun, very flexible, word puzzle game. The basic idea of the game is to form words by touching blocks in a letter grid. By adjusting the settings, however, you can create the type of gameplay that's just right for you.
Some of the features
English and Dutch dictionaries included by default
Ability to block certain words and add additional words (on a per-dictionary basis). You don't think "biwinning" is a real English word? Block it! ;-)
Customizable grid sizes: you can even play on non-square grids if you like, for some variation on the old 4x4 gameplay.
Game rules can be changed: You can choose to enable or disable diagonal moves or bends in a word to keep the gameplay fresh. More variations coming!
Minimum/maximum word count: Generated games will contain an amount of words within a specified range. Only want games with lots of words in them? No problem, specify a high minimum word count! Want a totally different challenge? Specify minimum word length 9, maximum word count 1 and try to find the only 9-letter word in a 7 by 7 grid. (Good luck!)
Eight nice default color schemes, plus the ability to pick your own custom color scheme
Scoring system, using points per minute and percentage of maximum score metrics. Think you're better than your friends? Now you can (dis)prove it! Up to six high scores can be kept per metric per dictionary. Note that letter frequency determines how much points a letter is worth!
"Easy" and "hard" mode: In easy mode you can see the validity of a word while making it (it will be indicated by the background color of the word field), whereas in hard mode you can't. Note that the game is really very hard this way.
Sound effect and vibration settings may be configured to the user's exact preference; you may toggle individual sound/vibration events or disable them alltogether.
The game also has in in-game help file, that explains everything about it, so if you're unclear about anything, the answer is probably in there Lastly, more gameplay variation is coming in an update soon. Specifically, a new game mode is in development that will challenge even the biggest expert.
The game can be downloaded on the android market through this link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jkb.wordplayfree.

Additionally, there is a paid version with some more features. (Note that this is actually a key app that unlocks the extra features on the main app.)
Additional paid version features
The ability to load your own dictionaries into the game!
Word definition look up: Not sure what 'uric' means? Simply press on it twice in the list shown after game end to look it up online!
So, that's the introduction. I hope you guys will give the game a look. Please feel free to mail or PM me if you have any issues at all! Twitter url for updates: http://mobile.twitter.com/quaerendo. Suggestions/feedback via this forum thread, email (see the developer info in the market or use the feedback button in-game) or twitter (see above) are always welcome. Consider rating Wordplay on the market, if you enjoy it! To finish, I'll leave you with a few screenshots, because a picture says more than a 1000 words...
Screenshots (clickable)
Game play screenshots
Some shots of the settings, illustrating the flexibility
Requirements:
The game is for phones with Android 2.1 or higher, no matter the screen size. Some of the functionality does require an SD card, but most phones have that, so I don't think that will be an issue.

Just released an update, v1.8.0, that enhances the high score UI added in the previous release. Check it out.

Two updates released since the last post here:
v1.9.0
_____
* Added many UI improvements and the option to replace Q blocks with Qu blocks.
* Dictionary updates
v1.10.0
______
* Added a new feature: hot blocks. This feature adds a lot of fun to the game. If enabled, the game will randomly pick a block in your grid, and designate it "the hot block" and darken it on the screen. Now, if you form a word while using this letter block, the word will be worth more points. You can specify the duration of hotness (when it cools down, another hot block will immediately take its place), and also the score multiplier. Note that if you made a word while none of its blocks were hot, those potential bonus points will be lost to you! This game feature therefore rewards those who can keep track of a lot of word locations, because they will be able to cash in on the bonus points whenever the hot block lands in the right place.
Check it out.

Hi,
I've developed a android version of a popular student game.
This game was also here before but for Windows Mobile.
The goal is to remove all numbers on the board.

Hey there!
I love games like this, the concept is simple but effective.
It worked and loaded just fine on my Dell Streak (FroYo) which is a good start. The ingame UI could do with some tweaking, I found that the 19touch logo that underlays the number grid made it difficult to clearly see where I was at.. I think a simple black or contrasting 1-colour background would work better in my opinion.
I think it would be handy if the help file was loaded as a splash screen on first load. I worked out how to play by using the hints in the menu, some wouldnt go to this effort. An interactive tutorial would be even better!
Im off to beat the game now, eek.

I will add a setting option where you can select a background (black or 19touch image)
I'm currently working on a interactive tutorial
Hope you can win it
It's sometimes hard to get a good start, if you do it wrong you will just get more and more numbers.
Just downloaded and started playing. It's pretty fun and addictive. I agree that the rules should be displayed on first boot. I was a little confused until the toast told me to check for them.
I just have a comment and I think I found a couple of bugs:
1) The rules don't make it clear that you can match numbers off different rows.
e.g.
5 - - - - -
- - - -51-
You can match the fives.
Bugs:
1) Near the end of my first game, I was down to 1, 5, and 6. After making the last available move, 6 new tiles popped up, but none offered any new moves. Did I lose? Is the number generation supposed to yield a playable board?
2) After matching two numbers (each of which was in a separate row by itself), only one of the now blank rows was deleted. The second was deleted only after I made another move. That doesn't affect game play as the blank row can be bypassed, but it should still be deleted.
And a question: How does the game determine how many new tiles to add?
Thanks for the game. I really enjoyed it!

1) You can remove the two 5 because there are empy fields between them (-)
and the rows are continuous so the fives are touching eachother horizontaly.
Bugs:
1) Thats realy a bug.
The game adds all remaining numbers to the board when there are no moves left. The game checks for moves when you removed 2 numbers. So if there are no moves and the game has added the remaining numbers and there are still no moves left, nothing happens -> You have to start a new game.
2) Yes I know, but I don't know if I should fix that because:
1. It doesn't affect the gameplay
2. It would cost a lot more cpu load since the game has to recheck everything
Hope I could help you
Thanks for the quick feedback.
I just reread the rules and it does say that the lines are continuous. I just missed that.
Bug #1: OK, thanks. I started a new game!
Bug #2: I thought that might be the case. Just wanted to bring it to your attention.
New Version [1.0.1.1]
I just released a new version.
New in this version:
-Tutorial
-Changeable background
Bugs fixed:
-See post above
Working on:
-More gamemodes (feel free to add your ideas here)

[free game][2.0+] Shijin Reversi, the only two to four players reversi.

Hi,
You can find HERE (Google Play ) or HERE (Amazon) our first Android game using libgdx.
It's classic reversi game with some added value :
2-to-4 players
Nice, polished graphics
Reverse mode
I won't advertise it too much as you have all the informations in the links.
Any feedback is appreciated, feel free to rate it as well.
Thanks !
As it is a developper forum I will now talk a little more in a dev perspective, you can skip the following if development bores you
Why a Reversi ?
I always want to add features and stuff when i develop something, I have another game in développement with a more original concept, but while designing it I realized that it would take me for ever to finish it.
So for my first game on android I decided to make a game already known, so I won't be temped to add to much stuff in it.
Plus it would be good to have a code base for future games.
Yeah, but there are already billions or reversi on the market.
Right, so I needed an edge. I've downloaded the three or four most downloaded reversi on the market and played with it a while.
Even tough the AI is often pretty good, the graphisms tend to be between ok and horrible : first "breakthrough" :
But it's not enough.
Earlier this year I've played a board game called Roll It ( at least in France ), which is basically a reversi with balls instead of discs, and you can play with 4 players.
Bingo ! I had enough to keep going.
Why would my game be different ?
Good and polished graphics.
2 to 4 players
Yeah, but you need a robust AI now.
Right again, although I've played at Reversi several times i'm not a good player, so I had no idea how to implement an AI.
After some research on Internet here is the way I've done it :
I basically assign a weight to each possible board I come accross.
That weight depends on 4 factors :
- Basic weight : each case has it's own weight, so I just add all my cases weights, and substract the opponents ones.
- Safe discs : discs that cannot be flipped are considered safe, usually safe discs radiate from a corner.
- frontier discs : I maximize the frontier discs ( adjacent to an empty case ) of the opponents, and minimize my own
- mobility : I minimize the number of legal move the opponents can make, while maximizing mines.
after that I create a tree with all possible moves, using a min-max algorithm, that will give me the move that has the smallest chance of losing.
To reduce the number of move searched I added an alpha-beta pruning to remove in advance some moves I know will be bad. It was really cool to see the results.
With a depth of 6 moves, I reduced from 3 millions calculated moves to 100 thousands during the middle of the game.
I then made 5 levels of AI by playing with two things :
- the depth of the search
- the weight associated to the four factors aforementioned.
I don't know how my AI will keep it toghether against a real reversi player, but with the latest difficulty settings I get the general feeling I have while playing the other reversi games. ( and I loose badly ).
While browsing Reversi websites, I also came across the less-known "Reverse" rules, which consist of having the less discs at the end of the game.
I just had to invert some of the weight and I had a very decent AI, so it made a nice addition to the game.
And why that theme ? and that ridiculous name ?
After deciding I would have 4 players, I needed a four-way theme, like seasons, elements, cardinal points, etc.
Beeing a huge manga reader I though of the four beasts we see on a regularly basis in that culture, plus it combined all the previous researched themes. It was perfect.
I wanted a design that would talk to japan friendly people as well to everybody that would look at the discs and say : "whoa, that looks awesome", so I asked for a more modern, minimalist, clean style, with just a hint of asian culture, same for the music.
And i feel that my artist and sound designer got that very well.
For the name, I didn't want to have reversi in it, but I was afraid a reversi game without reversi in the title would loose a massive amount of visibility.
So I search for how the beasts were called in Japan and took the simplest name : Shijin.
If anyone here speak japanese, I apologize if the term is wrong .
Thanks for reading.
MangeCailloux.
Version 1.0.5 :
- Fix a bug that relstarted the app in the lock screen
- Haptic feedback intensity reduced
- Apk size reduced
- Remade setup page to be clearer
Haptic feedback should be lighter, and apk size wes reduced by 2 MB, just had to clean the mng files, silly me.
I've also made some changes to the setup page.
How can you add/ remove a player ?
How can you change the difficulty setting of the AI ?
How can you change avatar ?
How can you switch from human to AI, or AI to human ?
If any of that was not easy to answer, please feedback it to me so I can improve it further.
Thanks.

Hello,
I tried out your game today and it is really good development I like the theme mostly, but the fact is that the game didn;t contain any sound at all or non came out ( test device Gnex 4.3)
A couple of additional suggestion (low priority) If I may:
- Add a button to play faster ( like to speed things up to see the result), instead of waiting for the result after you draw the lines
- The button in the gameplay pause menu are really small, and you might want to center the skip button in the middle of the circle, on my screen it appears a bit to the bottom, and not vertically aligned with the Restart button.
- Maybe hide the settings button (appearing on the navigation buttons) as it is not being used.
But in all it is an excellent dev, didn't encounter any bug or crashes.
Hope it helps : )
Hello,
Thanks for the comment!
1. "Add a button to play faster" - Now it is in our todo list)
2. "The button in the gameplay pause menu are really small" - place to click is bigger then the icon. We will test it again and maybe will increase this place
3. "and you might want to center the skip button in the middle of the circle" - we will vertically align it with the Restart button (in todo), but horizontally this place was chosen because Russian language has longer words than English)
4. Hide settings button is now in todo, too)
Thanks!)
I spent about €130.- on apps over the last 2 years and donated to several devs on xda but I never bought anything "in app". I will never, ever, ever spend a single cent on coins in a game.
That being said: if you want to make money with this game (and it looks as if you do), I think you have to change your strategy. I played nine levels and have earned 900 coins. I played fast and with few, short lines. The cheapest item in the shop costs 500, most of them cost 1000 or 2000. The smallest amount of coins that I can buy in app is 10000!I Attention, dumbass math: I have to play 100 levels to earn the smallest amount of buyable coins! It looks like that no matter how good I play, if I want to buy stuff, I have to buy coins first. I guess that successful games with in app purchases are successful because, if you want to, you can just play them without buying anything, while in your games it seems inevitable that I will have to buy coins to continue sooner or later.
I like the idea of the game, I enjoyed playing it. I think not many people will like it because it's kind of hard and I don't think you will sell a lot of coins to the people who like it but I wish you the best of luck! I'll uninstall it now.
Thank you for taking the time to our application)
I think it very difficult to earned 900 coins from 9 levels... Because You can earn 1500-1900 coins from each level and even more on some levels. For example, If You set 1 barrier near start on first level and use accelerate, You earn 1500 coins. Or You set only 45 degree barriers and not use skills?
Yes, we of course want make money, but we make levels that user can pass for free. And rewards can allow to buy some skills to simplicity levels.
P.S. If You can say how You pass levels we will analyze that situation.
P.S. Sorry for bad english, I translated this message myself, so it have many mistakes
Update to version 1.1
1.1
Now you can speed up time
Now you can skip score calculation
Alignment of icons
Menu button was removed
New version publish and will be available after 1-2 hours
greatly reduced complexity of levels 1-4
barrier's length penalty reduced for all levels
I think it is not good, but complexity deters people(
Now we think about reduced complexity of other levels
Tips:
Each level can give 1000-1700 gold (exponential growth depends on the points)
Some levels have hidden information and prizes (gold, skills)

Hi!
I just tried your game. The screenshots intrigued me and made me download it The game has a clean look, but I have to say I expected a bit more in terms of gameplay. It's a good idea and the game is fun for a few rounds, but get's repetitive as only speed and direction seem to change (at least in the 13 levels I managed to complete).
My suggestions:
- add some variety (ex. different shapes and movements)
(EDIT: I see from the google play listing that you actually have different shapes, but I guess those are in further levels.
How about putting some of those in the initial levels as well?)
- some sounds and music wouldn't hurt
- the interstitials are too frequent, consider showing those less often
- there's no way to exit the game other than pressing home
Hope that helps.
Good luck with your game.
Cheers!
1. The levels start to change by 20;
2. Very soon I'll put the sounds in the game;
3. Maybe you're right about the advertising;
4. I had forgotten just to exit the user by pressing the back button.
Thanks for the tips, tomorrow will make the update to correct them!
I've released a new update. (1.0.1)
- Integrated the use of the back button;
- Decreased the frequency which the advertisement is shown.
Give me other tips to improve my game!
Up
No one can give me some suggestions on how to improve the game?

You should also add something in level. It's looks boring after playing 2/3 level. Same thing is happening again and again. Also you should take some transition time between start/restart and play. Sometimes I click twice on restart and end up with same page.
Good Idea!
My suggestions are :
1. Decrease advertising
2. Make different figures. It's boring to see the same all levels.
3. Add physics to the balls. So if user missed he should see how this ball go out from the place.
4. Make easy to pass levels. I think add additionally figures and speed should increase difficult but not 1 millimeter missed into the hole.
I hope it will help you.
Thank for your suggestions, i will make a new version of the game with some changes:
1. Transitions between start/restart and play;
2. Add different figures;
3. Add music fx;
4. Add effect to the ball when you miss the hole.
The game is made to be difficult, make it easier would ruin the experience of the game!
Thanks again for your suggestion and I hope you will like the new version.
Hello,
As most of us suggested, the game is getting repetitive a little too fast. I'd noticed that you said there will be something new beyond lvl 20? Maybe bring that "new" thing to lvl5? or 10? I could suggest a horizontally moving platform that goes left to right and back that could block the balls for extra challenge.
Also, as most have also pointed out, reduce the ads frequency.
Lastly, I couldn't help but notice, why did you use a native android UI for changing level? It completely breaks your beautiful minimalism design and it also breaks the game's immersive mode (that is, the nav buttons will appear at the bottom which occasionally does not hide back in some instance). Maybe you could make your own change level menu following your game's theme?
Regards
I've released a new update. (1.0.2)
- Add transitions between start/restart and play;
- Add different figures (for now one);
- Changed the graphic of menu;
- Fixed the bug of the button "Skip level".

[GAME][2.2+]"Color Flood Filler" = classic Filler / Flood it +fog of war +maze levels

[GAME][2.2+]"Color Flood Filler" = classic Filler / Flood it +fog of war +maze levels
Hello.
Let me introduce my free Android game "Color Flood Filler" - kind of "Flood It"/"Filler" games.
Link to the game demo video (2 minutes): https://youtu.be/j5MOPWmj5wM
Link to the game on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mosync.app_FloodFiller
Its advantages (why I hold it's outstanding):
1. Lots of Settings.
2. Fog of war (on some levels).
3. On some levels may appear walls: simple or as a Maze.
4. You can zoom the map and move it. Because map size can be ultra big - up to 200x200 tiles.
5. There may be 2 or 4 players - bots or humans.
6. Bots AI does not trick. It may train you, it may be stupid; but if you selected hardest level for it - then no mercy for you; and be forbear - AI may think really hard (so long).
7. There are no any advertising in the game (so the game does not get any promotion).
The game is allowed for people of any age (3+ by PEGI).
The game is member of the program “Designed For Families” ("Brain Games").
The game supports the commonly used languages (13 for now).
Alas game has a poor graphics design; no kittens inside or other nice stuff.
Game has simple: animation (e.g. showing current player tiles), demo and sounds.
Game description:
To win - own the half of all cells first;
Tap the screen to select the new color for your tiles, to own nearby free tiles of the same color;
Touch and Hold the screen to see full game info;
Tap during the animation to make it faster;
Press "Menu" or "Back" for more control.
I think it's a Filler with the biggest settings number you've ever seen
Please contact me to improve translations.

Aha! A competitor!
Thanks for positive replay Your game seems has more sharp colors than my
I wonder: is there any other online Filler / Flood-It game on Android?
Cool game and very nice design ! Congrats !
However, I think you should improve the algorithm that selects the colors among which the player has to choose. Many times, especially at the beginning of the game, you don't really have a choice : your surface is in contact with 2 or 3 colors, and the game asks you to choose between 2 colors, but your surface is in contact with only one of these 2 colors.
Or even, it happens that none of the colors that are offered is in contact with the surface, like in this case.
The game is great, I think you only need to fix this point.
Good work !

Thanks for a valuable suggestion. But that is strategical part of the game: to select a color, which your opponent need most
Without preventing opponent to choose your color - game becomes very simple - just keep selecting next color.
Another good strategy: to select a color, after which you anyway will have a good colors choice, whatever color opponent choose (that makes the opponent angry).
Game become much harder when you battle against 3 bots: sometimes (on map 4 or 5) you just have to loose few times to get into the good corner (with comfortable start position), then start prying for opponent to make a bad choice. On failure - press back to start from the same corner, where start position is the best (for this map).
so interested game! good to play on free time.
