[Q] Radio messing up after ROM upgrade? - HTC Inspire 4G

Yesterday I finally received my Inspire. When I bought it it was reported to be unlocked, but I found out it was also rooted and radio S-OFF.
As my carrier recently released a new 4G GSM network alog with their veteran 3G CDMA network, I went migrate my account to a SIM card with my line and put it in the phone. Everything worked fine, HSDPA speeds OK, HSUPA slow (no fix yet on the phone).
Then I decided to install LeeDroid on it, the ROM is awesome, but somehow it wouldn't connect to the carrier anymore (that means, no voice, no data, some eventual GPRS connections). I restored my nand backup but it was still the same.
In the evening, I decided to flash another radio (12.54.60.2SU_26.09.04.11_M2) instead of the AT&T stock version. For this to be a fast process I had to ENG S-OFF (didn't want to mess with other methods).
Immediately the phone found strong, stable signal. I reinstalled LeeDroid and now it works as a charm, HSUPA is even faster than HSDPA (probably due to network traffic) and I'm very pleased.
My big question is: I have had many Android phones (and many Windows Mobile HTC) and I never have seen a ROM messing up with the radio, I don't even believe it's possible. So, what happened?
My only explanation is that the Ebay seller I bought the phone from messed up with something and managed to get the phone working and then sold it before it failed again.
Any thoughts about this?

What you've been through isn't normal, so something must have been messed up with your phone. You never know what a phone off of eBay has been through. Maybe it hadn't been rooted properly or something else was done incorrectly. Normally, any custom Inspire ROM works with any version of Inspire/DesireHD radio. Some radio versions work better than others, but I've never seen an instance of what happened to you with your first LeeDroid install where the data/voice connection was totally dead. What version of radio did your phone come with? It should of been either 26.06.06.30 or 26.06.04.06 - if it came with anything else then the radio had been messed with.
The good news is now that everything is working, you should be free to flash whatever ROM you want with no worry of that weird connection problem happening again. Flashing ROMs on the Inspire (except for the RUU's) doesn't mess with the radio at all, it is a separate deal. But if you continue having weird problems, I suggest flashing the rooted stock RUU from this thread and starting fresh from there.

OK, thank you.
It came with 26.06.06.30, and it's really weird, I have never had this kind of issues.
I'm really not new to android (have had a few CDMA Android phones) and now I'm switching to GSM, but I was really confident that apart from the unbranding process both phones should behave really similar.
Will see how it evolves, for now I'm really enjoying 4G speeds.

Yep, you should be fine. HenryBravo is giving good info. Some radio\ROM combinations work better than others. Depends on the ROM. That's why some chefs have a recomended radio and others do not. Good luck with your new phone.

Advice sought... my VIII is now GSM only

hi -
the problems: since flashing 2 weeks ago my vario III only works for voice and data in gsm only mode - with 3G enabled i generally can't make or receive a call or connect to data, but the device . Everything works when i switch to GSM only...
The complications/wierdness: straight after flashing a new rom or radio i have sometimes been able to get the device to connect to 3G or make a call - but this usually only last for one session or so.
What i've done: i've installed just about every combination of ROM and Radio i can find - including all of the 6.1 radios with Dutty's 6.1, the "official" vodafone 6.1 rom, alex's, schaps, and i've tried going back to 6.0 roms and the 1.27.12.32 and .11 radios but still the same
what is the verdict? bricked? or am i missing something....

I don't think it's bricked.. if it was bricked your device wouldn't even turn on.
Did you hard reset after each flash?
Was it working before your original flash?
answers to both: yes
- working fine before i flashed it
- I've been obeying Dutty's rebooting advice - how could I ignore instruction given in bold AND capitals?
I'm having the same problems. Thinking of putting origional ROM with radio back on and removing hardspl and returning under warrenty but cant find origional splash screen anywhere! Help would be appreciated
had the same problem with my tilt...changed sim card ...different roms ...radios ...basically everthing i could do....but in the end called at&t and they sent me a replacement...goodluck
I had a similiar situation but with my GPS.
The Tilt I bought just 1 month ago was a GPS Champ, always acquired a lock quick. I had flashed XDA-Live v1.5 right over the at&t 1.62 Rom (after HardSPL of course).
Then I used th enew SIM/CID Unlocker (with the hacked Polaris Radio) and of course flashed back to the at&t Radio (from the leaked at&t 1.60 Rom).
Since then I had a coupel of times where the GPS locked-up and required a soft reset.
So yesterday I flashed a WM6.1 Rom and a Niki Radio as I've seen a lot of user report excellent results.
It made my GPS useless. I quickly reflashed XDA Live v1.5 (with the Radio from the at&t 1.60 Rom) but my GPS still seemed lost.
Ironically today is day #29 of the 30 on this Tilt so last night I removed HardSPL and flashed the Official at&t 1.62 Released Rom using the Official exe and everything figuring I'd returnt he unit today.
Wouldn't you know it, I tested the GPS and even on the untouched at&t Rom it was working better than it had ever worked before!
Now I know that the Radio in at&t 1.60, 1.61 & 1.62 are *supposed* to be the exact same but I can say that the over from at&t 1.62 fixed a problem that the 1.60 Rom's radio couldn't. Yes, I do a hard reset after each flash already.
Heck when my daughters return from Disney I'm going to flash the 1.62 version fo the at&t Radio onto my oldest's Kaiser and see if it improved her GPS also.
seems like everyone who replied has a tilt not a VIII. Are you sure your settings are correct for your network? that would be my first guess at this point input them manually and dont use the connection wizard app as sometimes it doesnt work right. also check your phone settings make sure its set to AUTO or UTMS only if all else falls force it into 3G mode using the Band settings post your results back please

hey I am having a similar problem at my house when i first got my tilt i have a very strong 3G signal here. That tilt messed up sent it in and this new one that i got worked just fine till i flashed a new rom on it now it wont pick up 3G unless i go somewhere else and come back to my apt. And yes i HardSPL'ed it and hard reset after flashing. I even went back to stock tilt rom and that didn't work. I have tried all the radio's on this forum from stock to the new imported NIKI radio's nothing has brought it back. When I go get the 3G signal elsewhere and comeback god forbid i have to soft reset because there goes 3G out the window and locked to edge. Should i return to AT&T for an exchange or is there a fix i'm not finding?

The Tilt Roms by default don't allow manual band selection.
Bad Data settings wouldn't cause poor reception just inability to connect (regardless of 3G or Edge/Gprs) for data sessions.
Based on my experience I would say first test is to do the work and reset your phone to the latest shipped Carrier Rom for your Carrier and see if your problems persist.
When I was having my GPS issues I also had a few wierd Call issues like calls not disconnecting (I had to toggle the phone radio to actually end the call).

I had the same issue with a t-mobile(UK) viii. The issue appeared after a while using the phone before I'd got into flashing different ROMS. In the end, i had the unit swapped out and the problems went away and have not returned. You can assume its a hardware issue. I went through the is it your SIM, is it this... is it that... after explaining that basically i was right next to a 3G transceiver in a big city.
Like I mentioned, this was a fault which developed after two months of no issues.
Old hardware version (looking under battery cover):
DATE:061107(TB02)/EU
New phone:
date:090807(RB01)/EU
I have had the same issue. I have returned the phone today and exchanged on my insurance. the new phone works fine.
thanks for all the feedback - shame there isn't a fix ..
austinsnyc: thanks for your help...
- i was using the connection wizard (difference i've noticed was that it includes a proxy server which i don't when i set up manually) so i created a new connection manually
- i've changed to 3G-only and i got "no service" (though i have previously got it to work)
- i put it on auto, it registered 2G then showed 3G signal in the taskbar. Tried to connect to my manually created connection - no joy: "cannot connect for an unknown reason etc".... then i got "no signal" for about 30 seconds, then full bars of gsm, then shows 3G again....
changed back to gsm only - works fine.
I'm not exactly sure t-mobile are going to take it back!... i'll have to hunt down the original t-mobile uk rom first....
got my new tilt in yesterday and it works totally fine like i thought in my apt. If you could wilbur i would definitely get a new one i think its the phone itself.
lol so i checked to see if switching off the 3g on my new kaiser then switching back would cause the same problem and it sure did so now im stuck with edge in my damn apt. again. I wonder if these new kaiser's they're shipping out are different than the old ones, when i first bought mine at launch oct.5, 07 i could switch back and forth between 3g. Now with 3 new tilts i have gotten i cant do it anymore this blows Damn i should have never given that first one away damn
so annoying...
i upgraded to the latest Dutty Rom (the 6.1 hybrid) - sure enough, straight away after flashing i was able to use 3G to make and receive calls, and to make a data call (but it was really slow)... then, within 30 minutes, i was back to the old phone: cannot connect a 3G call and no connection to data... so annoying - i'd almost prefer it didn't work at all than tempt me with the prospect that one day i'll find a rom that works...
anyway - I'm going to need to replace it - anyone know which rom/radio combo i'd need to flash to convince the guys at T-Mobile to take my VIII back? and btw - does anyone have any experience of trying to return handsets covered in scratches?
can anyone tell me if these problems are linked to Flashing ROMS? Since i had my last Vario 3 replaced ive been apprehensive about flashing if this is what broke the last one but i really want to flash it again.

Current MyTouch 1.0 Radio Revision?

A friend of mine has having trouble connecting to 3g at all for the last week or so. She's running CM 4.2.15.1, hasn't had any network issues prior to this. Tmo hasn't been a whole lot of help, and I figured once they realize its rooted, they'll probably even less so.
So, what is the current radio version? Later than 2.22.19.26I? Where could I find it?
I'm running 2.22 on my MyTouch 3G Limited Edition. I used to have a Mytouch 3G 1.0... I actually don't have it any more because I bricked it by doing what you're asking to do. I also tried to find the radio for the same reason, except it turned out it was t-mobile's fault not my phone (as I experienced the same problems on my fender, til they caught it).
I am also having this issue! It started a few days ago for me. I cannot hold a 3G connection, but 2G and G seem to work. I've since tried numerous ROMs, wipes, and formats including my SD card yet nothing seems to help.
Any thoughts?
I've had this problem before. For me, it's been accompanied by erratic behavior of SMSing, too. Once it was even an outright inability to connect to the cell network at all.
If that's the case and you call up T-Mo and complain, often they'll give you a credit for a new SIM card, and you can pick it up at a store.
Interesting... So you believe it to be the SIM card and not anything firmware/software/network related? Any idea what could have caused something like this?

Got data connection back by accident (maybe not)

I have search all thread/forums/questions and I didn't found anything similar. Some threads says cause is old SIM card, lemon phone batch and TMO network issue. Not sure where this will fit.
Just want to share this info, be gentle noob here, New TMO customer/new phone
I got my htc sensation few days ago and root it on Stock ROM then install a bunch of apps and freezed a couple apps(aka bloatware) using titanium backup pro. After 3 days I lost all data connection (gprs/2g/3g/4g) except WIFI of course.
Called TMO-US they said that they reset my network and we do a whole bunch of troubleshooting. Still no luck but when I Tried using my sim card on my old phone(HTC inspire) I got a FULL 4g/network signal. WHOA!!!!
I didnt give up because htc sensation is a beast! but after spending alot of hours searching for the fix , no luck... then I decided to let the phone go since Im still covered my the 30 day grace period. Upon looking for a different phone on TMO lineup can't find any phone that can beat the htc sensation. So I resort to getting the same phone replacement.
*****Trust me I've tried everything that this sita has to offer (radio/cipher boot, airplane mode, battery pull, config settings)****
Then this whole fiasco becomes interesting...
Got the instructions to "de brand" the phone. S-off and unroot.
Downloaded stock rom and install it. on first boot 4G icon popped up.. hmmm... tried to browse the net and download some apps on the market check
so I download htc software updates(using 4G), reroot the phone and restore my backup.
I assume the cause is somewhere along the line of
- installing stray apps and freezing bloatwares - (not sure which one- too many to know) or
- some rogue processes triggered the data connection lost or
- need to do htc update first before roorting or
- I just got a freak accident upon rooting.
Doesn't matter I got my data connection back. So far so good.....
HTC Sensation
Stock ROM, S-OFF, Rooted
i had a very very similar problem as yours.
before I was s-off/rooted it was running fine with 3g over in asia. zero problems with the stock rom. started reading on s-off for about a week and went into Insertcoin cos that seem like the most popular.
after rooting to insert coin, problems started ... i could hardly get any 3g network even though the icon showed there was data going in and out. flashed from IC 2.2.5 to 2.2.7 and thought it would work itself out, 2.2.7 to 2.3.0 didn't work as well. Gave up and jumped to ARHD and every thing worked
It looks like both Insertcoin and ARHD uses two different kernels/radios. IC works on TMOUS for majority of the users, so you might want to look at InsertCoin and try that out on your 4G set
This is getting more interesting.. .As Im planning to venture to try different roms.
I'll keep that in mind and yes indeed InsertCoin is more popular.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105432
Any advantage using InsertCoin? Because for now Im happy with my set up HTC sense is a bit laggy but not all the time and speedtest says 6mb++ download : 3mb++ upload.
if you're with tmobile & the your data worked with another phone & not the Sensation, your IMEI was probably blacklisted if you don't have and "Android Approved" data plan according to tmobile.
When the phone first came out a lot of us were having that problem. Our data would work for a few days & then would stop completely. I was running the original Total Internet plan from back when the MDA was release & it shut off. Tmobile didn't remove the flag until I converted over to an android plan.
My guess is you're on an older data plan & they want you to switch to their throttled data plan
Thanks for the info Xnifex! I'll keep that in mind, Im not sure though what you mean by "Android Approved".
Since Im a new customer with a new phone(HTC sensation that came from them). Im positive its brand new not refurbished so I assume IMEI is good.
I lost the data 3 days after I rooted the phone with S-OFF and SuperCID and a few tweaks. but I got the data back when Im in the process of de-branding (unroot and S-ON)
Although I didn't reach the S-ON process because I got the data back after installing the stock ROM/RUU. So I reroot it again.
The only thing I can remember on TMO side is the tech rep told me that they reset my data connection not sure if that helps
So far no issues here
If you lose connection again, call tmobile and make sure that they have you on an android data plan. I had a winmo phone before my sensation and they have 2 different kinds of data plans. Not sure why. My data stopped working after a couple of days. I had to call support and have them switch it away from the winmo data to the android. They might have screwed it up when you signed up.
the android approved was in quotes because it's no different than any other plan, but it's the term they use to get those that were on older non-throttled plans to switch over.
If you're a new tmobile customer than I don't know what's wrong, but if you're an older one who had a data plan from an old blackberry, windows mobile, or other smartphone, they blacklisted your Sensation IMEI until you switched over. That's probably why you could get it to work on a previous phone, which wasn't blacklisted, & not the Sensation
HMMMM... Almost the same scenario as I suspect.
Thanks for all the inputs.
All I can remember on tmous side is they reset my connection and I forgot to mention on the earlier post that I have my att number ported into tmous, probably thats the cause.
But I assume its the phone because after all the things that tmous have done I waited a couple of days nothing happen.. the only way I get the data connection is instaliing the srock rom\RUU.
Its been 5 days now, I've install the same apps that I got before and freeze a few bloats.. Still got data connection. Happy camper here...

i9020A (ATT) completely lost 3G on all ROMs, help!

I've completely lost 3G ability on my NS, and I'm not sure what happened.
Here's my order of tweaks:
CM7 nightly (with 3G)
MIUI (with 3G)
ICS rom from SDK (no more 3G!)
ICS from kwiboo (no 3G)
ICS from koush (no 3G)
CM7 stable (no 3G)
I guess sometime during my playtime with the ICS from SDK build, something messed something up and subsequently I cannot get 3G anymore, regardless of ROM.
I'm not sure where even to begin troubleshooting.
- Yes, "use only 2G networks" is unchecked
- My APN should be correct, as they are the ones that loaded automatically from the ROMs. That has always worked before
Anyone have any ideas? I'm desperate for help. I haven't had 3G for what feels like a month!
Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19424857 in this post there is a link to the radios try flashing one of those to see if that fixes things. If not try flashing a stock unrooted rom and start over
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
You know what? A new radio worked! I don't know why I didn't think of it before. Seems so easy in hindsight.
This brings up another interesting thing. Seems like a lot of the radios that used to give me 3g don't give it to me anymore, including the most popular ones people are using. That's weird...
edit: Actually, no radio issues anymore. My old radio gets 3g again, as well as others. I just needed to rotate the radio versions a few times and reboot a few more times and it fixed itself. Totally weird, but no more problems!
I had the same issue on AT&T 2 nights ago. It turned out that it was an AT&T network issue which was confirmed by tech. support.

[Q] HTC One S, CM11, and poor data/cell signal (if any)

Hey everybody:
This is kind of a last gasp for me. My HTC One S suffers from the usual that you read about - "Preparing SIM" messages, constant error reports on bootup, random reboots. I honestly hate the phone.
So I installed a custom ROM. I unlocked the bootloader via HTCDEV, then I used the 12/20/13 CM11 (KitKat 4.4.2) with the 12/15 GAPPS.
The phone worked OK except now I was able to see what I've read about, and probably unknowingly experienced with the stock ROM, and that is the phone constantly flipping between Edge, 2g, HSPA, HSPA+, etc.
So, I decided to try a new radio. Did it a million times on my old G2. In order to get S-OFF to update it, I used the RLL to bring it back to stock Jelly Bean, then Moonshine to set S-OFF, SuperCID'd, and restored it with CWM. Then I installed the 1.20.x radio and at that point, all heck breaks lose with the data network connectivity and even cell signal. I might have no cell or data signal. I might have a cell signal with Edge. If I get up and move, it might go to HSPA, then I might lose everything again. This is much more pronounced than what I witnessed when I first installed the CM11 ROM.
I've tried reflashing the original 1.13 radio and it's no better. I went back to the 1.20 radio and even wiped and reflashed CM11 and GAPPS from scratch. Still very inconsistent data connectivity, so I'm not necessarily convinced it's the version of the radio because they're both pretty darned bad including the original version.
Has anybody been through this and gotten it straightened out? This is strange that even going back to the old 1.13 radio doesn't seem to help.
Thanks for any ideas...

Who is your carrier? If it is TMOUS you will probably need to make some adjustments to your /system/build.prop file. When I flash a new ROM I have to make the following additions/changes before my data connectivity is stable:
Code:
pm.sleep_mode=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 24
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 6
ro.ril.hsxpa = 4
ro.ril.radio.svn=19
ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule = 0
The setting "ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=1" probably already exists in the file, so it will either need to be edited or removed. The other settings should not exist.
The changes that actually allow the phone to maintain a data connection (as I recall) are "ro.ril.radio.svn=19" and "ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule = 0". "pm.sleep_mode=1" allows the CPU to completely power off, and the "ro.ril.h*" settings set max speeds for different data connections. I'm going off of what I've culled from various posts and forums, so I may be off the mark on some of my descriptions.
Here's one post briefly talking about these settings:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48276115#post48276115
You will need root access and your /system partition will need to be remounted as read-write to make the changes. Ask or search if you need help with those. Of course if you're not on TMOUS, then I have no idea...
Yes, T-Mobile US is my carrier. There's another thing I found. If it go into the phone's testing facility (*#*#4636*#*#), I notice that it's set to WCDMA preferred. If I set it to WCDMA Only and give it a few, it does go to an HSPA/HSPA+ connection. However, that setting appears to be lost between restarts.
What I don't get is that when I first flashed the CM11 ROM, I at least had the intermittent E/2g/3g/HSPA connections. How, if I go into that testing facility, it is stuck on Edge (and more consistent since my last flash). I will read the thread you provided a URL to. Thanks very much!

OK, I did these build.prop edits. Unfortunately, they've gotten me nothing. Then I went and investigated them a bit more and tried two other minor changes to build.prop (one of your parameters and added another). I'm still stuck on the Edge network. If you do a lookup, you'll see plenty of others. I think this phone is pretty much worthless - as it's been from day one. It will be my last HTC phone. By contrast, my old G1 and G2 are still working. There are tons of reports about One S phones suffering serious issues like this.
I appreciate your help and certainly, if anybody has a eureka moment, I'd love to hear about it. For the time being, I'll most likely see about getting my old G2 reactivated. Others have reported that the only way they've gotten this fixed is sending it back to HTC under warranty. Mine is out of warranty, which is the only reason I decided I'd do it. It was such a bad phone, I had nothing to lose. The next one I buy will most likely be the Moto X.
Thanks again for the help. I absolutely appreciate it.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm still fairly new to this phone, but I quite like it. I suppose I've been more fortunate than others in that I haven't had any real problems with it.
It's not a problem and I'm grateful for you trying. The information you provided was also interesting from a learning perspective.
I reran the RUU on it, just to see if it would make any difference. This made it so I USUALLY have 2g connectivity, but that's as far as it goes and it's not good enough. I have lost that at times, but for the main part, it's consistent with 2g.
T-Mobile is sending me a new SIM to get my old G2 reactivated. While it's only about a quarter of the One S speed, it'll suffice. Unfortunately, the SIM it had couldn't be used because too much time had elapsed since the phones last use. That should be here Monday and that particular phone was WAY more tolerant of different images and radios (knock on wood!). It's currently running a Jelly Belly image of Android 4.2.2 (if I remember), so this should be interesting.
As for my HTC One S, I'll most likely give it to my son to use for games and media. With nothing more than 2g speeds, it's worthless to me. This phone has been a complete and utter piece of garbage since the day I got it. It's funny that my excellent experience with the T-Mobile G1 and G2 by HTC was my reason for buying the One S over a Samsung model. Now that phone is the reason I won't be getting another HTC. Strange how that works.
Again, thanks VERY much for the help!

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm still fairly new to this phone, but I quite like it. I suppose I've been more fortunate than others in that I haven't had any real problems with it.

Weird, I had a desire z (same phone as g2) and it had really bad reception while holding it. Would lose all signal in the house. All my other phones used have been fine and pretty well equal - nexus one, desire hd, one s, my girlfriend's iPhone are all about the same.
This summer at a cottage my sister gs3 had no service all week, same network and the one s and iPhone
4s both could squeak some signal if you didn't touch them. A slight edge going to the iPhone most of the time I think.
Probably either a radio issue with that phone on your provider or defective hardware?

It's not the provider (T-Mobile). My wife's Samsung has 4g here in the house - no issues. I took the One S out and had 2g everywhere. It's the phone.
I'm also guessing it's most likely the radio, as in a bad chip. Once you try to burn a new firmware into it, it finishes it off. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly no engineer. It may or may not be that, or may be WAY more involved. Some people said the only way they got it fixed was by HTC replacing the main board.
The phone was a POS even before installing a custom ROM. Random reboots, constant startups with messages asking if I wanted to report the errors to HTC, random instances of NO data connectivity and then a message saying the phone is "Preparing the SIM card". I finally realize now that the occasional drops I would get while working remotely in Mexico (using a Movistar SIM) were most likely a result of this thing losing it's data connectivity while "Preparing the SIM card." The issues with this phone and the fact that it was out of warranty were the only reasons I took a chance on installing a custom ROM.
I'm sorry that I most likely sound like I'm ranting. However, I've searched all over and found SO MANY issues with this phone, that there's no way they should NOT have been recalled. Even T-Mobile told me there were many reported issues with these things. Both companies failed their customers.

Here in Canada we don't even have 2g on Telus, Bell, virgin mobile and koodo (I am on Telus), so the several phones that seem to have network problems on 2g or switching back And forth only have those issues on Rogers/fido or the small carriers like wind.
A guy I knew from highschool years ago works at fido and I remember him telling me last year this phone had some reception issues.
When telus had this phone on their website still they had pretty well all 5 star reviews. So my phone would probably be a piece of **** on a 2g/3g network too luckily they work perfectly on hspa only.

Interesting. It's nice to have the option in the case of there ONLY being Edge/2g/3g service available, but not to be stuck on it when HSPA is there.

True, at least around here though the amount of area without service for Telus/bell or Rogers seems to be pretty equal. So I'm happy not to have the issues with switching between 2g, 3g and LTE. It's hspa or hspa I guess.
