Just received my Transformer and need help - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received my Transformer about 3 1/2 hours ago. So far I think it is just great!! I do have a question I bought a 16 gb micro sd card and there are no instructions I can find in manual and I have been unable to install the card. I push it in and it just pops right back out. Any and all info on this or tips in general about the device are greatly and warmly appreciated

You just keep pushing until it locks in unless your device is defective. I had to use my thumbnail to push it in. It's pretty standard.

Just push it all the way in. It should click into place and should be flush with the casing
Also. Make sure the "words-letters" on the micro SD card are facing the screen. Use your nail or maybe to push it in

Finally got it in. never have had to push that hard with sd cards in the past. So far I really really like this device. I have tried the Xoom and the Acer Iconia and they do not compare at all to what I have experienced so far with the TRansformer. Thought about rooting it but right after turning it on I got notification of an update so I let it do its thing ad it turned out it was for 3.01 not 3.1 I guess the 3.1 update is to be pushed out tomorrow, so I believe I will wait. Any one way easier than another as far as rooting and applying cwm recovery? I notice there are a couple posted in dev section. Thanks for all of the help.

Easiest way is downgrade to .9 and use BLOB_V5 following this guide http://androidroot.mobi/asus-eee-pad-transformer-tf101-root-cwm-recovery/
I suggest flashing 3.1 primeordial after rooting.

ok thanks!! I am not sure what I will do yet. Going to wait a day or two to see if I will be keeping it. Can we not send text messages with this device? I thought with wifi it would be possible. Anyone know???

i miss this the most.
google voice has telephony dependencies which means in it's current state it will not work on a tablet without voice functions.... but the google team says they're working on it.
hmmm, i did some more looking and found a modded apk that might work. forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=537977&d=1299700727
edit 2: newer version: forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13545805&postcount=172
edit 3: i installed it and it works fine.

Optimized SD card speed, BusyBox, CIFS, Tun (OpenVPN) preloaded and root access. You can use SetCPU to downclock when you have your screen off, saves more battery. Titanium Backup is also a good one that lets you backup just about anything and disable any preloaded software.

To be honest, on phones I don't mind rooting / ROM'ing (if that's a term), but with my TF I'm way too protective. I'm beginning to realize that when you root / tinker things can definitely start to go wrong and often times bugs are introduced / performance can actually degrade over time at least. Then again, I don't have issues with battery life/speed at all or need any of the extra features provided by new kernels / ROMs. The only thing I do really miss is removing the bloat, but personally I'd rather know that the OS is coming directly from ASUS/Google and hasn't been toyed with at all
I know most people, especially on these forums will disagree though

[Q] Is there a reason to Root a Xoom?

Have my Xoom WiFi pre-ordered and delivery is supposed to be next week. I am coming from a Viewsonic G-Tablet (will still have two of them, just I won't be using) where the ONLY way to make use of them is by rooting and installing a third-party ROM.
With the Xoom, it seems like rooting it is more of an intellectual exercise than something that would make a big difference in day to day use. Is there something I'm missing?

Given Google's announcement about the HC stuff not being released anytime soon, I wouldn't be holding my breath on that.
So basically, the same reasons I might want to do it on my Nexus One. But it's not like the G-Tablet where I'm going to go from hardly acceptable to Notebook replacement is what I'm hearing.
True...as far as deleting apps I delete a ton. The browser, the games, and quick office is just a few. I backup my evo files and bring them over to the xoom (like games).

I use dolphin so i delete it from all my devices Don't need programs that i don't use taking up space i need.
I don't recommend deleting the stock browser, and here is why;
I have a rooted Droid running UD 7.0. It's set up with Sweeter Home, etc, just the way I like it.
When Google Gesture Search came out, I spent days trying to figure out why I couldn't get it to work. I found out by trial & error (and a LOT of restoring ROMs!) that it was because I had deleted the stock browser in favor of Dolphin.
-Prob'ly nuttin, but because of all the unknowns, I expect I'll keep the stock basics until I can do a systematic, controlled delete. Just my 2 sense, err, cents.

Agreed.
Not to mention its worth it for the overclock alone. I have not noticed a change in battery life, and in terms of heat the dual core runs around 90 tops under heavy use.
These threads are useless, this Guy has a rooted device and knows what functions root already does. Why is he asking us what we will do with it when he already knows. Someone says removed crapware, then he gives an argument. Someone says overclock or custom then he gives another argument. C'mon man you already know what root brings, just determine if you need it or not because everyone's needs and wants are different.

Just to clarify, I have a couple of rooted Viewsonic G-Tablets. I haven't rooted my Xoom yet because:
A) I haven't got it yet (3/29 according to UPS)
B) It looks like it's a more complicated procedure at this point since there isn't native SD Card support
So I was trying to decide whether rooting was necessary (which it very much is on the G-Tablets), or just something desirable. And in the latter case, if there's something that would let me do that I would really miss.
At this point it sounds like there are three things I give up by not rooting, and the only one of those I don't have an acceptable workaround for is the overclocking. But I didn't want to hijack my own thread by starting a discussion on that, and so have been following the thread about OC instead.
FWIW...
Only reason I rooted my xoom was for the ability to play movies stutter free directly from my net shares...other than that no other reason...doesn't need to be overclocked and not really in to the custom rom game.

What player are you using? I assume you needed the CIFS support for this?
yes Cifs from the market. Using rockplayer until vplayer releases support for the Xoom.
I had a Viewsonic on Saturday (returning it monday) and i tried all the custom roms, but the main issue is the terrible display, i found not only do you need hold it in front of you, it still wasnt perfect until you held it on a weird angle. Even for 339.00 it's not worth it. I liked the USB port on it but it's ready to go back to the store tommorow. The Xoom screen is much much better (I had them both next to each other all day trying to justify). Heck, i might bring both back and just keep my Nook Color.. Time will tell... Battery life with the Tiamat kernal was about 9 hours but i started it at 72%.

I am having the same thoughts myself.
I jailbroke all my iphones, I've rooted all my android devices, but, for some reason, I am not anxious to root the xoom
I think once sd card support comes, and, when there are MORE rom/kernel choices, it might be more desirable to do it.
for trouble free viewing of hd videos, just rip with handbrake, or a similar program and watch them with Vital player..

U do know that is system space and you cant access it, right? thats not good and can cause the system to become unstable. Its space you will never see or be able to use so leave it. Get an app that hides apps from your tray and your problem solved ina safe manner..but hey, to each his own.

I couldnt agree more. I use handbrake for ripping also and I also don't see any current use in rooting a Xoom. Movies play crystal clear..Battery life is 9hours..
I just think some people are never satisfied..lol..like we're spoiled brats.
Im interested in the process but people are tweaking and reaching like this beast of a tablet isnt dual core and on the lastest version of android.
This is a Xoom and not a G1..lol...Not yelling..just made a point that we are never content until we brake some ****.
Google doesnt want the OEM using and skinning their **** anymore..atleast without that licensing/kiss our Google, rich ass Fee..so they probably wont release Honeycomb until 2012 I hear anyway.

Cancel 3.2 Update?

Before anyone gets angry....
I tried searching "cancel update", "cancel postpone update", and a couple other combinations - still can't find the thread I'm looking for.
I remember reading that there is a way to cancel updates that have already been pushed to the device. After reading the reviews of 3.2 - I think I'll hold off for now... but the only option I have is to postpone (2 more times).
Can anyone shed light on how to permanently stop the update?
Thanks!

Who told you this nonsense ? I am on 3.2 right now and wifi works exactly like on PRIME 1.6 (3.1 based)
Only issue I've had after 3.2 is Dice Player not loading, but think that's fixed now haven't found the new ver yet, so dunno what peeps are complaining about.
3.2 works great. It's definitely better than 3.1. I dont see a reason not to update unless your tab is rooted.
Does it fix everything people here wanted? Definitely no.
When you get your hope too high, you are going to be disappointed.
A lot of people here act like spoiled whinning kids .
They have no clue about how much work required to debug, program and test it.
They just want everything to be fixed in days. This happens to 3rd party developers as well and that's why they dont feel like their work being appreciated.
Seriously, enjoy what you have.

A lot of people here also preach about things, ignorantly making the assumption they know what others want.
Enjoying what I have is exactly what I want to do. I use remote connect to my PC all the time - and the new "circle" mouse pointer is a deal breaker for me. I'd simply like to stick with the pointer I have now.
As for the option to say "no" to the update... when is that given? My wife tells me "hey your computer told me to update" (awesome)... so now all I have is the "update" or "postpone" prompt. Will I still get the option?
Thanks!
You can allways try to freeze the DMClient app. Stopped me from getting the update.

I have not noticed any new issues with 3.2. My wifi & gps still work. In fact one problem seems to have gone away for the time being. That was having to push the power button multiple for my transformer to wake up.
Th default browser still suck with the lag & crashes.

I'm having at least:
- wi-fi problems (connection drops every couple of minutes, major speed decrease)
- browser window refreshing/redrawing much slower
Btw, for the wi-fi a possible temporary solutions is to set the connection to static as opposed to DHCP (the connection drops seem to be connected to DHCP). Also, take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16169854&postcount=32

Sorry I quoted the wrong person in my last post. Opera is really starting to piss me off. I tried editing my post 4 time and Once I hit save my text would disappear.
Would you mind elaborating on the inability to write to SD? I am on 3.2 and I can write to SD so you have me curious
-Dan
I don't know if there are other meanings of "write to SD" but I ugraded to 3.2 about 20 mins ago and I just created a ".doc" file with Polaris Office and saved directly to my external SD. I also created and deleted a folder from the stock file manager...
WOW, some people are so easilly swayed by what they read on the internet...
Clearly a site like XDA attracts people with problems and people that like to moan, the million other Asus Transformer owners that are perfectly happy don't count?
Get some perspective...

*** Firmware News & Alternative Install Methods*** Ver.10.6.1.14.8 date 1405

The Tenth update for the Infinity is out 29/05 Version 10.6.1.14.8-20130514 4.2.1 :good: (Versions can be downloaded from the link)
Release Notes to follow
Direct Link for Download (link now live)
http://www.asus.com/Tablets_Mobile/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_Infinity_TF700T/#support
****************
To Install the download file follow bellow.
Unzip the initial file you have downloaded. It will unzip into another .zip file actually.
Now copy that zip file to a microsd card's root, and insert the card into your tablet.
You will see a notification icon in the taskbar that there is an update detected, click that notification and it will update your tablet
*****************
Alternative Firmware update Method
1. Decompress downloaded .zip file (it will be another .zip)
2. Rename it to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip
3. Format FAT32 the MicroSD card that you will be using for the update process
4. Copy the file to (the root directory of) your MicroSD
5. Insert it into the tablet
6. Shutdown (power off) the tablet
7. Power it on by pressing and holding VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons simultaneously
8. When you see white text in the top left corner of the screen, release the buttons ^^ and press VOLUME UP button until you see Android logo and process bar
9. Wait patiently for 10 minutes or so
10. Enjoy!
Also remember that you will probably need to use RootKeeper to regain root privileges and reinstall BusyBox too (firmware update changes the /system partition).
Thankyou to d14b0ll0s

It's not even available in the US yet and they got an update out to fix some bugs. I think this is going to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, Asus.
Exaclty what talked about in my thread. Hardware not changing, firmware updating. This is why the whole "should I wait" question is moot. All we will see for the Infinity is firmware updates. If you wait, well, just wait forever and never take the plunge. At some point you have to dive in!
I assume this update will come as OTA soon, right?

I still believe it is for the Taiwanese version only for now (see "TW only" etc.) and we will probably have to wait a (working) day or two for the US & WW versions of this. But I am in no way a specialist in this field.

That seems like a reasonable conclusion...I'm not sure what's going on, I haven't really looked into it since I don't have the device quite yet.
I am thankful that ASUS is on top of this device, so to speak, and are actively hunting bugs, and I would like to stress that's a commendable thing and I do not want to downplay its significance. However, what I'd like to see instead of camera and several other minor fixes, is improvements in the I/O output and a reasonably recent kernel (mainline 3.xx instead of 2.6.xx). That should really make the TF700 take off like a rocket, and lessen the Wait/Hang errors and lockups this device is plagued with at the moment. Oh, the sweet day.......

Yeah, it seems like the I/O output is the really only big issue with this thing. Really not a deal breaker if you can put stuff on the internal storage for the moment, but I would love to just pop in a microSD card and go. I'm sure they'll be looking for a fix for that soon. For the time being, there are ways to increase performance with rooting.

You're right in that rooting (and setting up sio as the scheduler) does alleviate some of the lags and hangups, but it is far from a definite, complete fix, I fear. It still bugs me that, sometimes, even with sio, I get kicked out of DICE Player, Act1 or vPlayer just because the darn memory card can't keep up (both SD and microSD do this on my device -- I suspect that in this case, too, the I/O is the main culprit).
I haven't tried putting it on the main storage yet -- I'm still in SGS2 mode -- i.e., conserve as much internal memory as you can. Guess I have found the upside of having had to buy the 64 GB edition, huh?
Didnt asus say they had a update planned before the US release? It seems like I read it in one of the reviews somewhere...
Is it just me wondering this, or why are they releasing a firmware update that updates Google apps?
Isn't that what the Play Store is for?
The only thing I'm looking forward to is getting Jelly Bean eventually

Agreed. I wish it didn't include G+ at all really. No intentions of using it.
You can however disable built-in apps!
- go to control-panel/apps
- select all
- uninstall any updates for the app you hate/want to remove
- now that app is clean/original you can click "disable"
App should now not be listed anymore and playstore will no longer search for updates on it (or atleast should not).
Just got an OTA update to 9.4.5.22.

Hey there,
sadly the update doesn't seem to work for me. I checked for new updates, downloaded it and tried to install but the Infinity restarted after a while saying the update failed. When I check for updates now it tells me there aren't any available.
Could this be because I rooted the TF700T before?
It's a shame it's not available on their site (http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ASUS+Transformer+Pad+Infinity+TF700T&p=20&s=16), should be put there before OTA IMHO.
I've been using 9.4.5.22 for a few days, but from manual TW firmware update.

Me too. (Bought from Amazon.de being used in UK.)
Not updated it yet. This does stop you being rooted like the last Prime firmware update, does it?
Should I install OTA Rootkeeper first? Does it work on the Infinity?

[Q] Why root?

So, I rooted my Nook Color and my Nook Tablet, and that made sense to me, because they were so locked down. But this thing connects to my PC with no problems, and there's nothing I haven't been able to install on it. What is the point of rooting?
Running software not available without having root rights (OpenVPN, Titanium backup, Ad blocker, ...)
Hmm, okay. Doesn't seem worth the hassle. Thanks, though.

I don't see any reason to root the note 10.1
I had to return my first one because rooting it broke the s pen and flashing stock firmware didn't fix it.
I didn't need to root in the first place, just did it out of habit.

This device is great out the box. So for me, I feel no meed to root it yet. Once roms mature and developement and custom kernels pick up more, ill likely root.
I like the fact I can root my devices as it gives more flexibility if I need it.
I also like my clock to be accurate and I can't use clocksync properly without root...
Droidwall, titanium backup and clocksync.
Do I need to say more?
titanium backup! i need it to restore my previous device's apps
I did it to get rid of the damn mini apps.
I rooted purely for Titanium Backup and Sixaxis. Totally worth it.

That would also be the two reasons for me to root my Note 10.1 at some point down the road, but first I have to get it. Hopefully next week
Dousan...
Why would you want root access?
Well, ask yourself this...
Would you be satisfied with only your desktop and start menu as a user?
Or you would prefer to have access to C:\ as an administrator?
It's the difference between REALLY having control over your device vs having the illusion you have control of your device.
Titanium Backup, I can't stress enough how useful TB is. Between backing up, restoring, moving save data to another device, not to mention being able to save it all to cloud storage. If you ever have to do a factory reset, TB is imo the best way to keep your data.
Ad Away. Doesn't need to be explained.
ability to remove worthless stock software, or freeze it (via Titanium Backup).
access to apps that you otherwise might never have access to (example - Google Now before it got downgraded)
because it's easy to do.
everybody is doing it!

Thanks for all your responses, everyone. I'll consider it. But given that I started this thread and am a straight female, this last reason is probably the least persuasive.

[Q] Stuck with no root, what's next?

I am not the only one on this topic. I have come to a conclusion that my device (Razr maxx HD 9.30.1.XT926) won't be getting any root. Alright, what is next? What sorts of recommendations do you guys have to improve my phone? Faster Google Now response, tips and tricks? Anything to hold off till the unscheduled (at least to the public) 4.4 update.
Thanks!
Honestly, the only advantage root has vs unrooted so far as this phone goes is the complete removal of bloatware vs disabling it all. You can still disable any and all bloatware by holding the app int he app drawer, opening the app info, uninstall any updates if the option is present, then ultimately disable the junk. This will stop from phone resources being used to crapware on your phone, and will also help with the speed the phone, and of rebooting if you need to.
Lacking root, you're unable to utilize something like GravityBox to give little tweaks to your phone (one I'm fond of being the "Clear All" button in the recent apps drawer) or the Xposed Installer. Not the end of the world; GravityBox and Xposed doesn't have much outside of small quality of life tweaks for your phone. You'll live.
You are still able to install APK's from unknown sources. You are still able to use Nova Launcher to replace the disgusting Verizon phone icons (Phone, SMS, Contacts, Camera, etc) with stick KitKat icons. In fact, Nova Launcher can make your home screen and app launcher look and feel like KitKat. It's honestly very close to having KitKat itself.
Google Now is still very strong, even without the "always listening" from the home screen. My phone is rooted, but I have made no changes that would affect or enhance Google Now simply because I haven't felt the need. Mentioned above, disabling a bunch of crapware that Verizon puked onto this phone might have unforeseen performance benefits. Do your best.
Otherwise, I - like you - am eagerly awaiting KitKat to land on our phones. Having run CyanogenMod, XenonHD, BeanStalk, it's blatantly obvious that this phone is more than capable of handling KitKat without stutter. With Motorola opening their eyes about unlocked bootloaders, one can hope that after KitKat, custom ROMs will also be ported to the RAZR without all this stupid bootloader fuss.
Thank you for playing the waiting game with me.
Try out this launcher.
Be sure and choose "just once" when choosing it as home!!
A hit of home will allow the blur home back.
A safe boot will fix if you mess up, btw.
That is until you are sure it works.

I actually use Nova Prime. It has really given me some fresh air into my phone. I also love that they make your phone look closer to kit kat.
My main desire for a root is the chance to try out a kit kat ROM, due to the fact that it has such a low RAM requirement.

The 4.4 ROMs require an unlocked bootloader, so root wouldn't really help you out there.

What he said. You're already in a spot where you cannot root.
You need root, but cannot root.
You need and unlocked bootloader to flash a rom, but you need to root first. Since you're on 9.30, you absolutely cannot root or unlock yet.

Try using Nova Launcher. Its pretty fast. Also try Power Widgets from play store.
If you like stock one then don't put too many icons and widgets on home screens. You can also try to disable animations in developers options.
If you are using Chrome turn the sync off. I find it to be more responsive that way. Google now can be slow because of search history. Try cleaning up a little bit. :good:
I disabled Google Now since I never need it and it smooths out the phone a bunch. Google Now bogs this phone down. Try it!

Guess what! Hell must have frozen over because those with locked devices can now root on the latest OTA.

This looks promising! People within the thread are noting success. It's a bit iffy since there are no screenshots. but I don't have reason beyond that to doubt this too will work. No harm in trying I feel.
Up until now, I had simply been denying the "Update" popup until 4.4 came around. This sounds like a welcome fix!
I'll try and report results when I get off work later today.

I can't attest that it works because my phone is unlocked, so I don't have to resort to exploits, but I've ready numerous threads that state it works. It's using an exploit within the Linux Kernel.
Sorry folks, I've been running into a snag.
I tried to apply the 9.30 update, but it doesn't take. Preliminary Googling tells me that because I've already rooted the phone, I need to flash it back to complete stock through RSD Lite or something of the sort. The internet tells me that a simple factory reset doesn't do it.
So I either do flash it back to stock, or I wait (sigh) until 4.4 comes out for the razr hd.

You must use voodoo to unroot during the ota process. Then you will not need the new root exploit...
See my stickys for voodoo. You must get SS off your HD too.
