[Q] Stuck with no root, what's next? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am not the only one on this topic. I have come to a conclusion that my device (Razr maxx HD 9.30.1.XT926) won't be getting any root. Alright, what is next? What sorts of recommendations do you guys have to improve my phone? Faster Google Now response, tips and tricks? Anything to hold off till the unscheduled (at least to the public) 4.4 update.
Thanks!

Honestly, the only advantage root has vs unrooted so far as this phone goes is the complete removal of bloatware vs disabling it all. You can still disable any and all bloatware by holding the app int he app drawer, opening the app info, uninstall any updates if the option is present, then ultimately disable the junk. This will stop from phone resources being used to crapware on your phone, and will also help with the speed the phone, and of rebooting if you need to.
Lacking root, you're unable to utilize something like GravityBox to give little tweaks to your phone (one I'm fond of being the "Clear All" button in the recent apps drawer) or the Xposed Installer. Not the end of the world; GravityBox and Xposed doesn't have much outside of small quality of life tweaks for your phone. You'll live.
You are still able to install APK's from unknown sources. You are still able to use Nova Launcher to replace the disgusting Verizon phone icons (Phone, SMS, Contacts, Camera, etc) with stick KitKat icons. In fact, Nova Launcher can make your home screen and app launcher look and feel like KitKat. It's honestly very close to having KitKat itself.
Google Now is still very strong, even without the "always listening" from the home screen. My phone is rooted, but I have made no changes that would affect or enhance Google Now simply because I haven't felt the need. Mentioned above, disabling a bunch of crapware that Verizon puked onto this phone might have unforeseen performance benefits. Do your best.
Otherwise, I - like you - am eagerly awaiting KitKat to land on our phones. Having run CyanogenMod, XenonHD, BeanStalk, it's blatantly obvious that this phone is more than capable of handling KitKat without stutter. With Motorola opening their eyes about unlocked bootloaders, one can hope that after KitKat, custom ROMs will also be ported to the RAZR without all this stupid bootloader fuss.
Thank you for playing the waiting game with me.

Try out this launcher.
Be sure and choose "just once" when choosing it as home!!
A hit of home will allow the blur home back.
A safe boot will fix if you mess up, btw.
That is until you are sure it works.

I actually use Nova Prime. It has really given me some fresh air into my phone. I also love that they make your phone look closer to kit kat.
My main desire for a root is the chance to try out a kit kat ROM, due to the fact that it has such a low RAM requirement.

The 4.4 ROMs require an unlocked bootloader, so root wouldn't really help you out there.

What he said. You're already in a spot where you cannot root.
You need root, but cannot root.
You need and unlocked bootloader to flash a rom, but you need to root first. Since you're on 9.30, you absolutely cannot root or unlock yet.

Try using Nova Launcher. Its pretty fast. Also try Power Widgets from play store.
If you like stock one then don't put too many icons and widgets on home screens. You can also try to disable animations in developers options.
If you are using Chrome turn the sync off. I find it to be more responsive that way. Google now can be slow because of search history. Try cleaning up a little bit. :good:

I disabled Google Now since I never need it and it smooths out the phone a bunch. Google Now bogs this phone down. Try it!

Guess what! Hell must have frozen over because those with locked devices can now root on the latest OTA.

This looks promising! People within the thread are noting success. It's a bit iffy since there are no screenshots. but I don't have reason beyond that to doubt this too will work. No harm in trying I feel.
Up until now, I had simply been denying the "Update" popup until 4.4 came around. This sounds like a welcome fix!
I'll try and report results when I get off work later today.

I can't attest that it works because my phone is unlocked, so I don't have to resort to exploits, but I've ready numerous threads that state it works. It's using an exploit within the Linux Kernel.

Sorry folks, I've been running into a snag.
I tried to apply the 9.30 update, but it doesn't take. Preliminary Googling tells me that because I've already rooted the phone, I need to flash it back to complete stock through RSD Lite or something of the sort. The internet tells me that a simple factory reset doesn't do it.
So I either do flash it back to stock, or I wait (sigh) until 4.4 comes out for the razr hd.

You must use voodoo to unroot during the ota process. Then you will not need the new root exploit...
See my stickys for voodoo. You must get SS off your HD too.

Yeah but come on so many benefits to rooting why not you know??

Well then good luck with that. Personally anyone who buys a phone that's missing a feature , especially one that's mostly used for nefarious purposes really should learn to read before buying. Then again one would think; all it takes to have root is said reading and therein lies the cusp.
Wouldn't be a problem if say the rooting process was like the hero or evo hell even my former samsung epic. No data loss

This means don't buy any AT&T branded device. Hopefully sideloading happens with the Inspire. With hsupa now enabled and with this, I would lose more reason to root. Although getting rid of the bloat would be nice. I just wish we could root stock without having to downgrade.

If your phone is Stock rooted, you can always edit the settings.db file and enable side loading feature. I did it and works like a charm. I didn't want to take a chance with a custom ROM, so I updated the stock ROM with the latest HTC update and the rooted it with gingerbreak. So far so good.

try using titanium back up, that helps out alot, if u really don't wanna waste the 15min it takes to reset up ur phone, or just root it b4 setting it up, right after you buy it. sure, some rom updates will require a full wipe but its always for the better, there's just too many benefits to rooting not to want to do it. removing bloatware, ability to sideload, tethering, being able to run any of the many roms out there and the list goes on and on and on.

+1. If you're on AT&T, and have an Android phone, you are going to be missing out on all your phone could be. Even if you hack the living daylights out of a stock ROM, it won't compare to any ROM floating around here. It's not nearly as hard/bad as people think.

I sideload right on my Inspire. I have the apks on my card and choose them with any file explorer and install them. I can even install apps that require root to function. Those particular apps will install, but they won't work without root. But all apps that don't require root to function install and work just fine.
It figures... right after rooting. I like root though. I'm a control freak and I like to determine what is on my phone. Deleted all of ATTs bloarware and just darn well like playing with ROMS. I was a Linux distro sampler too for a while before settling on Fedora.

The biggest advantage of rooting the stock ROM that comes with a Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD is the ability to manually de-bloat and forcibly remove all of the bloatware that Verizon has pushed onto the phone. By removing this bloatware, your phone will run much more smoothly, have improved battery life, and still be able to receive OTA (over-the-air) software updates pushed out by Verizon.
Of course, you can get similar (or better) benefits by waiting for custom ROMs to come out and become more mature. A custom ROM will frequently be de-bloated, plus add several additional enhancements to performance, usability, and features. However, going with custom ROMs will force you to rely on the developer community for support / updates to your phone software.
Over the long run, staying with the stock ROM that comes with your Droid RAZR Maxx HD will provide you with fewer enhancement options, but also be lower maintenance & headaches. In the long run, going with custom ROMs will give you vastly superior flexibility for defining exactly the user experience you want, but will require more time on your part to "tinker" with your phone (which may be desirable, for people that like to play with tech).
In addition to everything that was previously mentioned, Rooting will also allow:
Ad-free browsing
Some simple themes or changes (boot animation change)
Some CPU control
Phone will be able to connect to an Ad-Hoc network

It is the most important thing for me ! An android phone without Adfree (or Adaway) is not a true android phone
Also, gain real control of your phone : Titanium Backup, root explorer, OpenVPN etc...
I agree... just the benefit of not having ads is enough for me to root. I find it funny how I open apps in other people's phones and see ads I never new existed in some apps.

[Q] Rooting nexus 5 first thing after getting it

Hi I'm getting my nexus 5 soon this week so i wanted to know if it was a good idea to root it first thing after getting it. What is the probability that a receive a defective nexus and then i void my warranty for something that was already not working??
You can unroot it and the number of "defective" N5s is not as high as people here make it seem.

Give the phone a look-over when you get it. If anything is wrong, RMA it. If not, unlock the bootloader and root it immediately.
Super simple process. 10 minutes and it's done.
I made it about an hour before I rooted and unlocked. Just long enough to check everything out.
When you do decide to do it, use the instructions given by Chromium_. I tried the tools and had trouble. The fast boot method by chromium is just as easy and almost fool proof.
Thank you you 3, it seems like theres nothing wrong with rooting it first thing after getting it. I was just afraid of getting a nexus with such defect that i would not notice till after some days of usage,
today when I receveid the phone I just open the box, unpeeled from from protectors, checked a little and booted up in fastboot...
unlocked and rooted before the phone was able to reach Google server, maybe I was too hurry but nevermind is a Googlephone: must be rooted
and as Phazmos stated use Chromium_ guide, fast and reliable, toolkit can be used by experienced user cause if something goes wrong you have to know what are you doing and in toolkit usually you don't
From what I've read shouldn't you boot up and take the OTA first seeing as taking it after will cause you to lose root?
What are some good apps you all are using that need root? I wanted an AOSP browser but none seem to be working well at the moment. Other than that I installed greenify (but there's nothing to greenify yet haha), the sixaxis controller app, and titanium backup...
Do any of you use any adblocking services?

If anyone tries this could you report back on how it goes. I'd be willing to buy a S6 today if this materializes into a true way to root the Verizon s6. What this is going to give you (if it works on your firmware version) is JUST root. So you will be able to do certain things but you CANNOT flash custom roms cause that has to do with the bootloader, and that bad boy is LOCKED tight. I'm not saying it won't happen but probably not. Hopefully someone starts developing Safestrap again (for this device). I left Verizon long ago because of their crap with locking down phones but I still thought you guys would like to know the info i found, seeing as it's a given that every Verizon device will make it next to impossible to achieve root. The root method for the Turbo was a different kind of exploit but I am pretty sure that this method will at least allow you to do some of the basic "must have" rooting tweaks. ie. Ad blocker, totally removing bloat, Hotspot mods, etc. Best thing to do is follow him over at the link I posted. Hope u guys get this all figured out and remember, this is just in beta right now, so if you can't get root that does not mean 100% for sure that this won't work 4 you. Like I said, follow the brilliant guy that made this all possible. :good:

I have seen a few Verizon guys post success and my friend just successfully rooted his verizon S6 as well. This exploit literally just came out today but I can tell you that the guy working on this has just made root available for a hell of a lot more devices than just the S6! I have seen you over there @jparasita so I know you are probably getting frustrated but hang in there, I'm sure there is a reason that this is happening to a lot of people. Hopefully something simple! Good luck guys!

No frustrations I realise that its only in beta phase 1 so its possible with a simple fix it might become more stable. Plus like you said with this exploit you are only gonna be able to do a few limited things until someone comes along and makes something like safestrap. Plus im pretty sure the system will still be write protected. A lot of hurdles to overcome to fully modify this phone. Can you tell me what kernal date youre friend had that was success?

By frustration I mean that it's not working... I get SUPER frustrated when I can't get something to work! That's just me though. Lol I am think write protection is most likely the case so who knows? I will ask my buddy here soon as he is coming over after I finish up at work.
Didn't work for me, but hey, it might sooner or later

:good:

I've downloaded and installed the APK, but at the moment my phone just shuts off and isn't rooted when I reboot. Gonna keep trying different things and keep an eye on that thread

I'm thinking there will be some good things coming out of this for the whole community. :highfive: :fingers-crossed:
Working now!

Dual Window

I don't want to get into a whole debate about root but I am coming from the G3 and previously had the G2. I had both of these rooted with excellent Cloudy stock Roms.
It is my goal to live without root on this phone. It seems to run great, has enough ram and battery to handle lost background apps with little to almost zero lag. I am just kinda tired of the TWRP, ROOT, TB, Flashing lifestyle... Lol. Been doin it since the HD2.
However I did not discover until yesterday while using the phone unrooted that Dual Window is only limited to a handful of apps. I guess with the rooted Roms the mod for other apps was already in place so I never noticed. I honestly gotta say that's pretty terrible. I don't understand the thought process behind why LG would limit such a strong multitasking feature. I personally used it to balance my checkbook beside my bank app. SUPER EASY! Now this kind of sucks. It might be enough to make me root it. I am trying the ad block thing I found in another post but this dual window thing is a FAIL without root IMHO.
Otherwise this is a bad ass phone. I am loving it.

Yep
Yep... And this is the first phone I tried to go without Titanium Backup... How do people live like this?!?! Lol... I guess we'll see.... What I'd like to see is the manufacturers just do stuff like that on their own.....
Samsung, the creators of multi-window, have a restrictive list too. I never bypassed it though. Kind of annoying. They've had it for years too.
But...umm..you can add any app you want to dual window without root

Hooooly crap that's alot of work to have something as simple as dual window support. What happens when the app updates? Does that change anything?
Again this just goes back to manufacturers just taking care of their customer base. This should be a non-issue.... Maybe I'll fool around with this at some point but honestly just rooting will probably be easier and provide more overall benefits once it is accomplished (which I would imagine would be sooner rather than later.) I'm always willing to donate for developers hard work. Definitely worth it.
Thanks for sharing this friend!
It's not as bad as it looks tbh. Once you become familiar it's a fairly quick process.

I've used this on a few apps and it works great. Took a little bit of time to figure it out the first app (I have zero experience with this type of thing), but after that it went pretty quick.
I just verified it with some apps I edited for my G3 that it works fine on the fancy new V10.

Maybe I will give it a try. It seems intimidating but perhaps it's not. What happens if an app updates via the Play store? Does it overwrite your changes?

Hah, I've got no idea honestly. That reddit thread that was posted isn't too old; I haven't had any of the apps I messed with updated yet.
Hi,everybody .I try to sign FM Cube to dual window and it is work great but when I try to do the same with Waze it show me error when I try to build apk back.
Can anybody help me with that ? And also I did a Google Map but can not install on my phone because the original one is a system app.
