Dual Window - LG V10 General

I don't want to get into a whole debate about root but I am coming from the G3 and previously had the G2. I had both of these rooted with excellent Cloudy stock Roms.
It is my goal to live without root on this phone. It seems to run great, has enough ram and battery to handle lost background apps with little to almost zero lag. I am just kinda tired of the TWRP, ROOT, TB, Flashing lifestyle... Lol. Been doin it since the HD2.
However I did not discover until yesterday while using the phone unrooted that Dual Window is only limited to a handful of apps. I guess with the rooted Roms the mod for other apps was already in place so I never noticed. I honestly gotta say that's pretty terrible. I don't understand the thought process behind why LG would limit such a strong multitasking feature. I personally used it to balance my checkbook beside my bank app. SUPER EASY! Now this kind of sucks. It might be enough to make me root it. I am trying the ad block thing I found in another post but this dual window thing is a FAIL without root IMHO.
Otherwise this is a bad ass phone. I am loving it.

Yep

Yep... And this is the first phone I tried to go without Titanium Backup... How do people live like this?!?! Lol... I guess we'll see.... What I'd like to see is the manufacturers just do stuff like that on their own.....

Samsung, the creators of multi-window, have a restrictive list too. I never bypassed it though. Kind of annoying. They've had it for years too.

But...umm..you can add any app you want to dual window without root

Hooooly crap that's alot of work to have something as simple as dual window support. What happens when the app updates? Does that change anything?
Again this just goes back to manufacturers just taking care of their customer base. This should be a non-issue.... Maybe I'll fool around with this at some point but honestly just rooting will probably be easier and provide more overall benefits once it is accomplished (which I would imagine would be sooner rather than later.) I'm always willing to donate for developers hard work. Definitely worth it.
Thanks for sharing this friend!

It's not as bad as it looks tbh. Once you become familiar it's a fairly quick process.

I've used this on a few apps and it works great. Took a little bit of time to figure it out the first app (I have zero experience with this type of thing), but after that it went pretty quick.
I just verified it with some apps I edited for my G3 that it works fine on the fancy new V10.

Maybe I will give it a try. It seems intimidating but perhaps it's not. What happens if an app updates via the Play store? Does it overwrite your changes?

Hah, I've got no idea honestly. That reddit thread that was posted isn't too old; I haven't had any of the apps I messed with updated yet.

Hi,everybody .I try to sign FM Cube to dual window and it is work great but when I try to do the same with Waze it show me error when I try to build apk back.
Can anybody help me with that ? And also I did a Google Map but can not install on my phone because the original one is a system app.

[Q] Is there a reason to Root a Xoom?

Have my Xoom WiFi pre-ordered and delivery is supposed to be next week. I am coming from a Viewsonic G-Tablet (will still have two of them, just I won't be using) where the ONLY way to make use of them is by rooting and installing a third-party ROM.
With the Xoom, it seems like rooting it is more of an intellectual exercise than something that would make a big difference in day to day use. Is there something I'm missing?

Given Google's announcement about the HC stuff not being released anytime soon, I wouldn't be holding my breath on that.
So basically, the same reasons I might want to do it on my Nexus One. But it's not like the G-Tablet where I'm going to go from hardly acceptable to Notebook replacement is what I'm hearing.

I use dolphin so i delete it from all my devices Don't need programs that i don't use taking up space i need.
I don't recommend deleting the stock browser, and here is why;
I have a rooted Droid running UD 7.0. It's set up with Sweeter Home, etc, just the way I like it.
When Google Gesture Search came out, I spent days trying to figure out why I couldn't get it to work. I found out by trial & error (and a LOT of restoring ROMs!) that it was because I had deleted the stock browser in favor of Dolphin.
-Prob'ly nuttin, but because of all the unknowns, I expect I'll keep the stock basics until I can do a systematic, controlled delete. Just my 2 sense, err, cents.

Agreed.
Not to mention its worth it for the overclock alone. I have not noticed a change in battery life, and in terms of heat the dual core runs around 90 tops under heavy use.
These threads are useless, this Guy has a rooted device and knows what functions root already does. Why is he asking us what we will do with it when he already knows. Someone says removed crapware, then he gives an argument. Someone says overclock or custom then he gives another argument. C'mon man you already know what root brings, just determine if you need it or not because everyone's needs and wants are different.

Just to clarify, I have a couple of rooted Viewsonic G-Tablets. I haven't rooted my Xoom yet because:
A) I haven't got it yet (3/29 according to UPS)
B) It looks like it's a more complicated procedure at this point since there isn't native SD Card support
So I was trying to decide whether rooting was necessary (which it very much is on the G-Tablets), or just something desirable. And in the latter case, if there's something that would let me do that I would really miss.
At this point it sounds like there are three things I give up by not rooting, and the only one of those I don't have an acceptable workaround for is the overclocking. But I didn't want to hijack my own thread by starting a discussion on that, and so have been following the thread about OC instead.
FWIW...
Only reason I rooted my xoom was for the ability to play movies stutter free directly from my net shares...other than that no other reason...doesn't need to be overclocked and not really in to the custom rom game.

What player are you using? I assume you needed the CIFS support for this?
yes Cifs from the market. Using rockplayer until vplayer releases support for the Xoom.
I had a Viewsonic on Saturday (returning it monday) and i tried all the custom roms, but the main issue is the terrible display, i found not only do you need hold it in front of you, it still wasnt perfect until you held it on a weird angle. Even for 339.00 it's not worth it. I liked the USB port on it but it's ready to go back to the store tommorow. The Xoom screen is much much better (I had them both next to each other all day trying to justify). Heck, i might bring both back and just keep my Nook Color.. Time will tell... Battery life with the Tiamat kernal was about 9 hours but i started it at 72%.

I am having the same thoughts myself.
I jailbroke all my iphones, I've rooted all my android devices, but, for some reason, I am not anxious to root the xoom
I think once sd card support comes, and, when there are MORE rom/kernel choices, it might be more desirable to do it.
for trouble free viewing of hd videos, just rip with handbrake, or a similar program and watch them with Vital player..

U do know that is system space and you cant access it, right? thats not good and can cause the system to become unstable. Its space you will never see or be able to use so leave it. Get an app that hides apps from your tray and your problem solved ina safe manner..but hey, to each his own.

I couldnt agree more. I use handbrake for ripping also and I also don't see any current use in rooting a Xoom. Movies play crystal clear..Battery life is 9hours..
I just think some people are never satisfied..lol..like we're spoiled brats.
Im interested in the process but people are tweaking and reaching like this beast of a tablet isnt dual core and on the lastest version of android.
This is a Xoom and not a G1..lol...Not yelling..just made a point that we are never content until we brake some ****.
Google doesnt want the OEM using and skinning their **** anymore..atleast without that licensing/kiss our Google, rich ass Fee..so they probably wont release Honeycomb until 2012 I hear anyway.

You can use sideload wonder machine http://forum.androidcentral.com/android-sideload-wonder-machine/
Or root the phone and load a custom ROM that has non market apps enabled
the sideload wonder machine method is sipmple the only drawback is that the apps wont receive updates like they would from the market, if I'm not mistaken.
Also if I remember correctly if the app is to big for side load wonder machine, you can use adb push. There are always work arounds.

You can also consider rooting the device. I did mine with no issues at all. It's VERY easy, just time consuming. From start to finish, took me about 35 minutes. I already had EVERYTHING I needed to do this though, including the ROM I wanted.

Both have full unlimited use with no expiration, also if you change rom's you can redownload them from your account for as long as you have the account. They give away a full paid app everyday on there.

Well then good luck with that. Personally anyone who buys a phone that's missing a feature , especially one that's mostly used for nefarious purposes really should learn to read before buying. Then again one would think; all it takes to have root is said reading and therein lies the cusp.

This means don't buy any AT&T branded device. Hopefully sideloading happens with the Inspire. With hsupa now enabled and with this, I would lose more reason to root. Although getting rid of the bloat would be nice. I just wish we could root stock without having to downgrade.

If your phone is Stock rooted, you can always edit the settings.db file and enable side loading feature. I did it and works like a charm. I didn't want to take a chance with a custom ROM, so I updated the stock ROM with the latest HTC update and the rooted it with gingerbreak. So far so good.

try using titanium back up, that helps out alot, if u really don't wanna waste the 15min it takes to reset up ur phone, or just root it b4 setting it up, right after you buy it. sure, some rom updates will require a full wipe but its always for the better, there's just too many benefits to rooting not to want to do it. removing bloatware, ability to sideload, tethering, being able to run any of the many roms out there and the list goes on and on and on.

+1. If you're on AT&T, and have an Android phone, you are going to be missing out on all your phone could be. Even if you hack the living daylights out of a stock ROM, it won't compare to any ROM floating around here. It's not nearly as hard/bad as people think.

I sideload right on my Inspire. I have the apks on my card and choose them with any file explorer and install them. I can even install apps that require root to function. Those particular apps will install, but they won't work without root. But all apps that don't require root to function install and work just fine.
It figures... right after rooting. I like root though. I'm a control freak and I like to determine what is on my phone. Deleted all of ATTs bloarware and just darn well like playing with ROMS. I was a Linux distro sampler too for a while before settling on Fedora.

It is very much worth keeping. We have root and now an unlocked bootloader is on the way. Navigate up to the AT&T G3 General forum section and reference the Bootloader Unlock Bounty thread...devs are closing in on a fix now for all G3 variants.
You can donate to the cause to financially if you are able to there as well.

you know, lg's rom is pretty nice all in all, with the stuff we can change using root you can achieve almost anything you'd want... Agreed. Root, debloat. The rom is pretty solid, especially with a custom launcher. I get better battery life out of it on any phone i've ever used even with google now on all the time (i used to uninstall it on other phones). I dunno, if the right rom comes along i might give it a shot, but otherwise.. it's a great phone as is (minus the att crap)
That's one thing I couldn't believe. The amount of bloat was incredible. A shortcut to ATT Homepage that is compiled like an app? I mean seriously? I'm surprised LG didn't smack the person who brought them the list of bloat apps to add..

Completely agree. I love what they did with the stock Rom. Has a little vanilla feel with the app drawer button and they have subtle touches like the vanilla alarm clock icon. Like it. LG went all out with this device and they nailed save for a few things that can be fixed via software update. The annoying aux cable bug and we definitely need a new radio update. For the most part I get great reception through my day but there are times I drop signal completely and have the searching for network symbol above the signal bars. Changing the network from 9 to 12 didn't help in my case. Ever since I've had greenify hibernate every app I use every day after the set amount of time my battery lasts days on moderate use. I didn't charge it last night and used it at work and watched some YouTube clips and I'm still at 52% battery. This device is amazing. The only thing I miss is being able to make reliable nandroids and having custom kernels.

LG doesn't control, nor do they add the apps. You can thank ATT for that 100%
What you can thank LG for is the ability to disable every single one of the bloat apps without root, a lot of times manufactures' roms give the carrier the ability to block the 'disable' option on their apps, requiring root to remove them.

What you can thank LG for is the ability to disable every single one of the bloat apps without root, a lot of times manufactures' roms give the carrier the ability to block the 'disable' option on their apps, requiring root to remove them.

LG marketed that the G3's software had a diet, and said the bloat could be uninstalled out of the box. This isn't really true and it certainly doesn't apply to the ATT G3.

It was one the posts on their fb page. I was under the impression that bloat could be deleted.

this is absolutely true, compare their rom to say a Touchwiz rom which is Heavily modified. The LG rom is damn near stock with some minor changes. As for the bloat, you can disable it out of the box. All of it. This is huge, I've never had a phone that lets you disable all the carrier crap without root, there's always a few programs you can't get rid of, not the case with this phone.

Well I was hoping the ATT bloat could be deleted out of the box, but I guess carrier bloat is an exception to the rule.

It can't be deleted but it can be disabled, which is what matters

should i pull the trigger on this phone

I'm heavily debating jumping to this today (T-Mobile) id be coming from a rooted V20 the lack of root (so far,) is really putting me off for right now but I'm thinking of sucking it up and getting it. Any thoughts?
It's a great device all around. I have the TMO variant and could not be happier. It certainly is a beautiful device and has a lot of great features. As far as root, I do not care about this at all. Most of what you want root for you can now do it without, at least in my experience. I have rooted in the past, but anymore it seems unnecessary. I would not let being able to root be your deciding factor, if this is the case, you are limiting your choice of devices.
I'm sure others will disagree with the rooting business, it's just my opinion.

I agree with everything you said.
Having rooted and flashed custom ROMs, while it is fun to tinker, having a device run flawless right out of the box is a plus.

Ha, small world indeed. Viper is nice, but this device does have some great sound, not as many options as viper, but for a stock device....well you know coming from a V20. Either way, it's worth the upgrade.

The V20 is a great phone but I promise you, the G7 is a beast.

Lol hasn't yet rolling naked until my case comes in Thursday, this thing is slippery as all hell
I've been thinking about upgrading to this phone as well. Root is one of my issues (Viper4Android and Adaway) but also that notch! It looks so weird to me.......

Honestly it's not that bad unrooted I found an EQ app that kind of works (nowhere near viper) and I'm using adguard for ads and it's working for the most part (not as good as adaway) and the notch no big deal I'm giving it a chance, you barely notice it half the time and theres ways to block it from in the settings or an app on Google play

I use Blokada for an ad blocker and it works great on unrooted phones.

Not sure if you could get used to separated fingerprinter and power button.
I wouldn't hesitate, I love it so far!

It's been rough getting used to it but I'm slowly getting there
Best phone I've had to date. I haven't been running root so far for the past three phones now, not missing the instability. The only thing I was missing was Adaway for YouTube, but now with YouTube Vanced I no longer need it, except for annoying in app ads. But gaming is so much better on here than the G6 I came from previously. Better internal storage meaning I can hold more than 3 or 4 big games. The only thing disappointing me as usual isn't the phone, but T-Mobiles **** call reception. And the notch doesn't bother me at all like I thought it would. Some apps don't scale correct but most can be fixed in the settings.
