As I've said before, I don't care if it's HTC or a 3rd party, but I'm not buying the Sensation till it's cracked and rooted. If HTC wants to help speed up that process, they speed up the time for when I'll purchase the Sensation.

I was already thinking to get SGS2, but now... Now i'll wait

And if they offer the crack for their bootloader. It had better be with NO STRINGS. I mean, if I have to give them my device's unique identifier, just so they can keep a list of people they want to deny warranty to, no dice.

I don't see them budging on their policy. Not for any shipped device (sensation, flyer) anyway.

Exactly. This whole movement didn't start because of something not yet shipped. HTC knows very well this is primarily about the Sensation and then about their other devices to a lesser degree.
HTC and Samsung are in the slug fest and HTC knows the bootloader issue is of concern. HTC will be offering something, for the Sensation at minimum, maybe for other devices too. It just better not have any strings attached.

If HTC weren't considering a backtrack on this issue, I don't think we would have seen a post. Why make people hate you even more by getting their hopes up and then dashing them. Again.
Doesn't make things any better for them if they offer a review, and then don't do it. Or maybe I'm just being very optimistic.

You're correct. If they did anything but offer a crack for the Sensation at this point, it would only make matters far worse for them.
By making the post they've tipped their hand that something is coming. If they don't deliver something it will be far worse a backlash than if they never said anything.

Agreed. Saying nothing and not delivering is ALWAYS better than saying you will think about it, and never delivering!

I see no problem with giving them your phone imei to unlock. Your warned again and again, unlocking bootloader voids warranty, yet everyone still goes forward with it.
I think its only fair to know who is willingly voiding warranty. Provable manufacturer defects surely are arguable

Speed up s-off (unlocked bootloader) update

Hi guys, posted it in some thread but thought it would be a good idea to have a separate thread for it.
Facebook and Twitter is the only way to speed up unlocked bootloader process guys. You want publicity, not private conversation. So it's quite pointless emailing htc, we had a win, now we need to make sure that potential customers are aware that HTC is taking it's time in keeping their word, so they hold back on the purchase. If sales figures drop, HTC will pull the finger out and will HAVE to do something about it. PUBLICITY. REPUTATION. SALES. That's what we need to address. Make sure that you mention that even average Joe which doesn't want root can be affected, as if company doesn't keep up to promises, they do it to EVERYONE. Mention that they lied about Desire getting GB (well, calling it lie is exaggerating a bit, but we want to make it look bad, and I hope you heard the news), so average Joe can't expect to have his HTC phone to be up to date for the whole length of the contract (normally 24month in UK). Make customers think before buying, even if takes only one week for all the customers to decide, HTC will definitely notice it, and will realize what sort of impact small group of unhappy customers can cause.
Also, as a lot of us hang out in other forums (i still pop in to Desire forum now and again), i suppose we could start threads there with links to this one, or just quoting it, so we get a lot more people to help us (we are a small group of Sensation owners in the end of the day). I do believe that even Sammy, LG, MOTO etc. owners will be sympathetic to our cause and will help us to become louder.
If anyone thinks this thread is pointless, feel free to mention it to mods. Only sharing my thoughts
you're a genius ...
definitely not pointless - we need to get the word out. 5 minutes of time to protect our investments is not much to ask.
I've been spamming their facebook page since about two weeks ago. It's extremely annoying to see their rep. respond to some dumb pic post, while ignoring real issues. I didn't expect an unlocked bootloader by now, but I do expect some kind of update.
HTC said that the desire would be getting a gingerbread update, then turn around and announce that it wasn't possible. Are they doing the same with the bootloader? I also don't understand why the ceo would comment specificallyon the evo 3d, but not the sensation. I understand that online support has said that were getting an unlocked bootloader, but who knows. It's been a month, they could easily give an update. If something isn't done/said in the next ten days, this phone is going back to Wal-Mart.
Hell, if it was just the bootloader pissing me off, then I'd be ok. At this point, I can hardly get on the browser because the data keeps locking up. I'm starting to regret selling my g2x. I'm very close to going back to my hd2 for a few days so I can actually use my phone without wanting to throw it against the wall.

Something seems to be working, now HTC says GB is comming for the Desire
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/15/htc-pulls-a-180-now-says-gingerbreads-coming-to-desire/
Which is bull****. One day they day it isn't possible, then the next day it is. That alone proves that they'll lie. Did they lie about the bootloader just to stop the constant spamming a few weeks ago?

Seeing that they did a U-turn on GB update for Desire makes me even more suspicious. WHY? You either can do it or you can't, so why announce one thing and then change your mind? Cheap PR? Don't get it.... I see things like that as a big fat MINUS to HTC.

With the phone off, press power and volume down at the same time. It will boot into hboot. At the top of that screen it will Eng S-off or S-on
I've been on the htc boat for a couple of years now and one things 4 shure, htc makes good phones, but it seems like they don't know how 2 listen 2 their customers. If they carry on acting and behaving in the future like they used 2 do, then the excistens of htc fades out. The whole idea of google and android is open source, that will say people like us are the developers and we can't develop and beeing be innovative if we don't have the tools to work with. Unlocked phones is a must.

Finally HTC get the message

I think HTC are beginning to get worried about the negative press over the One series.
Had a call from HTC customer service today in response to a survey I filled in recently.
Basically I slated them and their response to my support call.
I asked them a specific question about their new Bluetooth audio dongle and they gave me some crap generic response about how not all phones have the same Bluetooth functionality (my request had nothing to do with phones merely the specification of the dongle).
Anyway I didn't pick up because the number was 'unknown' but they left a very detailed message and seemed very keen to get a resolution (apparently ;-)).
What do you reckon? Call back and hurl abuse???

What do you guys do for a living? No company intentionally does things that aren't in the best interest of their customers. Big multi-billion dollar (pound, euro) companies can't turn on a dime. At least in the U.S., my experience with HTC so far has been light years better than Samsung. The fact that HTC sent you a survey (which they pay for) means they do care about what their customers think. And I guarantee you whatever their response is it in no way has anything to do with the *****ing taking place on XDA.

You guys really need to get lives as making a piece of electronic kit the focal point of your existence is just plain scary.

If you got time, I'd call back and actually tell them what you didn't like and how they should've handled it.
The fact is that companies like HTC pay these survey companies to study these things, collect customer feedback so that later on HTC can process it and work on improving their image/products.
How efficient that is - that's another debate. But I really think you need to use this opportunity to make your voice heard.
At the very least, you'll feel vented =)

So the International HOX has had Source since a month after it came out...

What's the holdup and what can we do about it?
It's been pointed out that as the owners of this device it's up to us to enforce the GPL.
Does anyone know how to go about applying pressure to HTC?
Anyone a member of EFF.org? I'm getting sick of feeling like HTC's bastard child.
Yeah, WTH.
I feel there's gotta be a reason. They can't just be ignoring us out of laziness... can they? I think I read somewhere that they could take up to 180 days, which seems ridiculous. It's only been 70 or something like that. In Canada anyway... it was released on 4/20.
I guess would could bombard them with phone calls and emails, but I'm sure that won't make much difference.

Surely AT&T has something to do with it, and if that's the case, a letter from xda isn't likely to move them.
Also, they aren't yet in breach, yet, right? The phone hasn't been out two months.

their typical canned response is they release within 60-90 days of device release. We're over 60 and approaching 90 for the Rogers phone
Considering AT&T had HTC lock down the bootloader, I'm sure they have also asked them to hold out on releasing source for as long as they possibly can. That is the only explanation I can think of.

that doesn't matter. AT&T is not in control of enforcement of GPL. They don't own the code in question. AT&t isn't the culprit here I'm sure of it.
Samsung has always been much faster with source code release.

Well, we're all just speculating here. I'm just saying... AT&T is the only carrier to have them lock the BL ... and they've got the weight to lean on HTC to hold the source as long as possible.
Samsung has leverage HTC does not, as the Galaxy line is in enough demand that they don't need to give in to these kinds of requests.
Okay. I was going to open a new thread about this. But this is easier. Plus no new crazy thread. Subjects would be the same.
I do have a lawyer already on this. You can pm me for stuff if you want it I don't want to get his offices flooded. He wrote a lot of the commerce laws and sales laws the state of California follows today. He's also on the commerce board here in California.
The reason why my lawyer is on this is because of AT&T and their crap between a supervisor/manager and I.
Through a discovery phase;
HTC and AT&T know and are working on the SIM card issue. Yellow screen LCD display (sharps fault). The phone is Gorilla Glass. Not gorilla glass 2. And source will be released 4th of July weekend.
There's little bits of info I know that's proprietary which I can't publically post but is nice to know. Such as a device refresh time with AT&T on the one X**.

I got really pissed and sent them this, I believe it is my 7th "comment" to them. I would have made it longer but I ran out of charachters. Does anyone know where I can talk to someone from HTC directly? I need to vent and/or use some choice words.
Anyway, here is the "comment"
I'm sick of HTC trying to dance around this issue. Tell me why this site was created. It certainly is not to give developers and the modding community what they want. If you did that, there would be kernel source code for devices such as the HTC One XL. I am a kernel developer and I own the HTC One XL. I bought this device, thinking that I could create custom kernels for it, and I would learn more about it. I bought this device, knowing that HTC would post the source code, unlike some of your competitors. So far that has not happened. It has been almost two months since the HTC One XL was released.
What am I looking for, you ask? I am looking for HTC to uphold its promise that they would aid the modding community in whatever way possible. I have time and time again seen the response 90-120 days, but I know that it isn't true. There is nothing stopping you from releasing the source now. Give me a definite answer. When will it be released? All the community wants is a definite answer.

Really Need the Tmobile Htc one S 1.84 Ruu. Am getting error 155 with the 1.53 ruu since the bootloader was upgraded withe the 1.84 ota. Phone is bricked right now
If you p/m football he has it. It will require a donation though.

Not to be a poor sport but I would think maybe HTC and Google would have a problem with someone wanting a "donation" for their RUU. That's also not very XDA friendly.
I don't think a donation is required (but good if you can spare a few $ for any devs)
I was told by football that it would cost. I am having a problem with my volume keys sticking and can't exchange the phone till I go back to stock. Looking each day with no luck so far. Been checking random One S forums on the net, no luck yet. Will post it if I find it.

Yeah me too and don't want to pay for it. I've been having Wifi and Bluetooth Issues with 1.53. TMO said I should get the update and it's been a week and it still hasn't showed up. If a dev works on a ROM that's one thing and I've contributed to devs in the past but to charge for the RUU I just don't think is right.

If a dev works on a ROM that's one thing and I've contributed to devs in the past but to charge for the RUU I just don't think is right.

Here's the thing, he can get it, you can't, it is what it is. He's taking legal risk by distributing proprietary, closed source software, owned solely by HTC. If you want that risk to be worth it to him you gotta make it worth his while. I don't like it either, but I understand. I mean we all know HTC has no problem with c&d letters, legal threats, and possibly even actions.
If he is worried about prosecution, he shouldn't do it. And if he needs the money to defend himself, he won't make enough this way to be worth it. This is more like trying to make a fast buck off something he has that no one else has yet.

How is that any different from those who obtain new devices early and sell them on eBay for $1000? I don't see many people complaining about that, in fact, those over priced devices almost always sell! Those people didn't do anything special either, besides get a product no one else has but many want. No different here! That's life. HTC wouldn't provide it to you at all! People, in general, shouldn't always feel so entitled to things.

Because in the case of a phone you have to buy the phone, it's your property then and you can sell it. With an RUU it is open source and belongs to HTC or T-Mobile, to sell that is violating open source regulations. He can do what he likes, just not very fan friendly.

Don't think he cares about being "fan friendly." It is what it is, and incidentally, I agree with your opinion. However, that's all it is...opinion.
BTW people that have pre-release phones DID NOT buy them, lol, so your argument doesn't have very much to do with the example I gave.

Your example doesn't compare, you are talking an actual phone versus a patch to some software. With physical property, possession is important, with intellectual property it's not. You can't say, just because I have software on my computer that it belongs to me. Whereas you can say, this phone is in my possession, therefore it belongs to me. So just because I have a copy of some software (i.e. RUU) doesn't make it my possession and definitely doesn't mean I can sell it. And going under the "donation" speak doesn't hold water either. Nuff said, he can do what he wants, I have 1.84 now so no worries.
I've supported this community for a long time and just want to protect it from things that can get us a bad reputation.

I doubt you have the RUU, if you did you would do what you claim is so virtuous and SHARE it with the community. If not you are worse than the user you are complaining about. I have the update zip too, it's widely available, but if you want the RUU, stop your whining and just pay for it! You aren't going to change his mind complaining about him. Let it go

Comment I left for HTC regarding the boot loader

The Evita has been available for nearly 3 months now. Is AT&T going to allow sanctioned bootloader unlocking? Was there any indication that after a period of time, the phone would be unlock able via HTC Dev? I'm considering selling my One X and never buying an At&T subsidized phone again, You are trying to come across as development friendly, but alas your flagship device sold in the United States is not unlock able.
Please advise without a canned response about carrier restrictions. I know all about that answer, I'd like a straight yes or no on this question please.
Lets see what I get in response
knowing the good folks at HTC you'll get the carrier crap...
heres to hoping tho
here's an idea, which is always fun. play the carrier against the manufacturer.
when they say its the carrier, go to the carrier and ask them, when each other blames it on each other, show them that's what going on. they hate.
Back when the phone launched I,along with a few other people filed complaints against AT&T with the BBB they went nowhere.
*sigh*
HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future. I do apologize that I do not have any further information at this time. I hope you enjoy your weekend,Gunnyman

Oh I did
I can per persistent as hell.
I just hate the thought of this awesome phone's dev community getting screwed without the benefit of even a reach around.
I'm in a very pissy mood today.
They just stop replying after about ten replays..HTC doesn't care about customer post purchase, you already bought the phone....

That is the truth. It's AT&T's fault. Start emailing them.
When I first got my phone and they gave me the generic customer satisfaction text I left negative feedback. If you leave below a certain score they will ask you why you wouldn't recommend the phone. I mentioned the bootloader and bloatware, as well as lack of Wallet support.
Don't bother contacting AT&T. If it truly is AT&T forcing HTC to keep the bootloader locked then the sad reality is those of us that like to tinker are an extremely small minority in their portfolio. AT&T couldn't care less about appeasing us and, from a business standpoint, I don't blame them. Us tinkerers are the ones that install the Asian ROM and create a portable hotspot for an 8 hour drive down the state so their kids can stream Netflix on the iPad in the backseat, soaking up precious bandwidth that AT&T would like to charge me a boatload for. Totally random example, wasn't me last week.

There may be more of us than you think. AT&T is about to give up on the added tethering plans for certain users. The new shared data family plans include tethering. You just pick your data cap and go.
Even though I've got grandfathered unlimited data, I may go for this when it's available. Adding up data totals for the three smartphones I'm paying for, we'll still save some money and get "free" tethering.
I feel the exact same way Gunny. My Nexus One was my first smart phone, and obviously, my first HTC. I had such a good experience, I went straight back to HTC for my next phone (this one) but it's clear now that the Nexus One was an anomaly in HTC's history. I'm thinking its going to be Nexus or Samsung devices only for me from now on. Not sure how much longer I can hold out with this device. If the damn camera wasn't so awesome I would have sold it months ago. =(
Billy
HTC can't do anything, it's not their fault. You should be contacting AT&T, not HTC.
im new to this phone so sorry if this is a noob question, but i rooted my phone and im assuming i unlocked the bootloader as im running cleanrom, to me the process was fairly easy to do, so whats the reason behind needing HTC to officially support unlocked bootloaders? will it give us the ability to do something more or make it easier to unlock?

I have no idea. Either way it does affect yor warranty, so I'm not sure why others dont use the CID mod to unlock.
We need a sanctioned method to unlock because the method we have now is not going to work on 2.2.0 and we should not have to scramble like iphone jailbreakers on supposedly open android whenever there's a software update

The One X is Android? It's so locked down, I could have sworn it was made by Apple.
