[Q] Sensation Movie Urgent Query! - HTC Sensation

In a nutshell. Im gettting married next weekend and purchased an Olympus SZ-30MR camera to film in 1080p. But it's eating through the propiety batteries really fast and it takes hours to charge.
I was going to buy the Sensation after the honeymoon. But now im thinking of getting one this week to do most of the filming.
People who have one already can you test:
1. How long you can film without it stopping? Cameras limited to 29 mins.
2. How much filming can you do until battery is nearly flat?
3. Is quality any good?
Will be using a 32 gb card.
Big thanks in advance.

As far as I can see you're only limited by the size of your SD card. I just uploaded a quick test I did to youtube, it's probably still processing the higher quality versions. 30 second video is 38.6MB, 1920x1088 resolution (yes, 1088), 29fps.
It's definitely not the best video to check quality, but I was more interested in seeing the actual size of the videos created.
No clue on how much it drains battery as I've hardly used it so far

Can you check the bit rate of that clip you posted? And is that in mp4?
cheers..

10596kbps and it's 3gp format. Thought that was strange. I always associate 3gp with the very first phone cameras.

can you upload a video for audioplayback test please ?

Thanks mate. Did you check the settings for that? Maybe there are some options to switch between 3gp and mp4?
Not a fan of 3gp. Bit rate is on the lower side. How do you feel when you view the clips on TV/monitor?

No option to change file format. Seems to be 3gp for all quality settings.
While changing quality settings I did notice it tells you how much video you can take for each setting. I could do about 3 and a half hours on my 16GB, with about 15GB free space atm.
Video looks nice on my laptop (1080p screen) and a bit better on my TV (also 1080p) when I'm sat on the sofa of the other side of the room. It's obvious there's compression there, but it's better than what I was expecting for a phone camera, and I definitely don't see any need for a "real" camcorder as long as I have this. It's more than enough for any "home videos".

I would in no way use a mobile to film memorable things like a wedding as you will regret it.
Take a good look at the Sony Cybershot HX9 that records excellent 1080p video. Excellent image stabilization, video and sound quality. Excellent camera too!
Really don't even bother with any mobiles for things like that.

Yeah go borrow/rent a good camera/camcorder or even hire a wedding film person (make sure they don't run off with your money). Video on phones is only for convenience. If you can do MUCH better, why wouldn't you?

Oops. No the mobile will be for video on the honeymoon which doesnt require zoom. Im stuck with a couple of Olympus SZ-30MR now. The zoom is pretty awesome at 24x.

The Sensation video as far as I can see after looking at a few Sensation videos on You Tube is even at 1080p its similar to the Desire HD video recording capabilities with the whole 'going dark and light all the time as you move around' which is ok but in honesty you will get better from a good compact camera as mobile video in general the sound is quite tin like.
I would try and get most capturing done on your compact camera as its going to be better. Shame you cant get a Sony Cybershot HX9 as that is a frigging awesome compact camera for photos and HD video just come out as well.

Ok. In MY opinion it should be good enough. Since you have the good camera which eats through the battery like mad I have the following impression. You were planning on getting the Sensation either way so might as well get it now. You can use the Olympus for those WOW moments and then use the Sensation for those fun spontaneous moments (seems good enough for that in my opinion) so you don't have to be constantly be worrying about the proprietary batteries and their charge.
But like I said, that's MY take on it.

Just a note on sound, if the Sensation mic is as good as the HD2 I will be chuffed. Went to Ibiza last year and stood next to loud speakers filming, it didn't distort and can easily recreate the bass. Blown away by it not distorting.
Yeah new mobile should arrive today. Got a pretty mint deal to make it worthwhile.
Thanks for responses people.

[Q] Camera quality.. disappointed..

I thought the fuze had a camera that rivaled the iphone 4 but apparently not.. I'm rather disappointed in the videocamera quality especially. The video that I took with it lacks fps and is quite laggy. The iphone 4 just killed it..
Here is a sample of what a fuze video is like (taken on my touch pro and friend put it on his channel; I'm not trying to promote views either)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrnkDwu4yDI
Is there any tweaking that can be done to improve quality? I have my videocamera on max resolution settings already or should I have left it stock?
You do realize that the fuze is a phone several years old, right? HTC never advertised the camera on the Fuze being anywhere near the quality of what the iPhone 4 claims...
Sent from my HTC Fuze using XDA App
Yeah I know but is there anything I can do to improve it?
There is a simple trick for FPS that works in many situations - lower the brightness to zero

Setting the resolution lower will yield higher-quality shots, but reduce the size of them. There have been tweaks for the camera, but the only one I can find/remember is the Panoramic shot one :/
Sent from my HTC Fuze using XDA App
I find that it works better in good light; I get pretty good video outdoors in daylight. The quality goes down the crapper in lower light situations. For the most part, I'm pretty happy with the video quality, I've gotten a lot of solid videos with it.
Hi you could have a look at some of the registry tweaks found on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638. Not all of the camera tweaks found on that thread apply but some like tweak 62. Improve Camera Recording Quality of MPEG4-VGA Videos
or 63. Unlock Additional Video Recording Formats + a few other may apply. It will require you to use a registry editor though. Hope this helps a little.
I tried #63 but I'm afraid to try #62 because the values differ so much and the folder doesn't exist

G2X's Camera is very bad

Hi today i was trying to record some videos on full 1080p and i noticed that the camera is very bad on this . I compaire to my nexus s that records 480p, Nexus s records better video even tough its not HD, what u guy think of the camera do u feel thet its 1080p or even 720p quality?
I think it's pretty darn good, though I do think it's better at 720 than it is at 1080. The Engadget review said essentially the same thing.
I have a Nexus as well, it's camera worked just fine also, just not as fine as the G2x camera does.
There is a thread around here somewhere with a number of G2x YouTube test videos in it, lemme see if I can find it...
ETA: Here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1055611
i dont know i dont see it being better then nexus s, i'm recording it outside and when i move around and record the video becomes very bad starts dropping frames, i do the same with nexus s its very good , i think its just a marketing to just put 1080p on the box to sell phones.
This phone does 24FPS at 1080p but 30FPS with 720p. 720p should be smoother.
I did 720p too its smoother but the video looks blurred, and yes I cleaned the lenses

Could be just your phone. Mine is better than my Vibrant. Does Nexus S even have 720p recording? I thought it doesn't.
no the Nexus s is 480p but the videos look much better on my hdtv then G2X's videos
I never tried 1080p but 720p does a good job.
No issues here. Tried both resolutions.

no nothing on the plastic i made shure to clean realy good and still when i put it on it takes with a blurr but now withoth it its perfect , thats why my videos looked blury too now its off and i put it in a case withouth the backcover and still nice and tight. just try youself and ull see the difference. maan im heappy again
Maybe it's your phone. My video is better than it was on my Nexus and my Vibrant. I have shot videos in 720 and 1080.

I agree, I have 2 full 1080p native res LCD tvs one Philips and one Panasonic. The G2x @ 1080p or 720p is the best camera with the smoothest video I have seen to date from a cell phone.
Be nice if the vids where in mp4 instead of 3gp but the camera quality if just the best there is.
Going to have a ball using it at the mothers day get together tomorrow lol.
Tested on 2 full 1080p native res TVs and my pc monitor wich is 32in @720p native res though.
The 2nd phone in video camcord quality will have to go to the samsung line up with the Vibrant for example. Vibrant owns the HTC phones Vibrant > G2 / MyTouch4G / Evo4G. HTC @ 720p was very choppy frame rate. Vibrant / G2x Constantly smooth. G2x with the edge being able to go up to 1080p
I Agree with THE VIBRANT CAMERA BEING SUPERIOR
uncalled for

These posts are what makes people leave XDA.
If you read through the posts it appears this user has a bad plastic cover over the camera and was the cause of his initial opinion of the camera.

Any Post-V10d video samples?

Cant find any video samples showing what 1080p looks like after the v10d update.. I heard the full hd is much better but i cant find any samples.. anyone?
The Simple fact is why would we buy a 3D phone and record things in 2D ? we are all doing 3D films.
Here is a quick sample I just took outside on the new firmware.
Its definitely better with the newer firmware but i believe there are still improvements to be had as the bitrate of the video is still only 10 megabit/s and can probably go a bunch higher.
My real problem is with the audio. It's pretty piss that we have 1080p 2D and 720p 3D but the audio is still this ****ty 32khz 64kilobit overdriven and compressed to **** tripe.
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA Premium App
What I don't get is the phone has two microphones, the normal one and the sound cancelling one. Can it not address them both independently?
If it can (which I would expect it would be able to) then why this ****ty mono sound when we could at least have ****ty stereo? It would at least be a start in the right direction.

Love your Camera - so does PC World! Yeah!

PC World loves the MT4gS for still images - http://bit.ly/oPdFKn
Video they feel the opposite. Do you agree?
I think the still images are great.
Good to know we beat the 4s. I never use the camcorder so didn't really care about that.

I just recently used the video portion and I agree. The video quality is no where near the picture quality. The audio for video is really bad.
This phone impresses me every time I use it to take a photo and I'm not surprised to see it rated as one of the best. It takes photos that are just about as good as a Canon point and shoot that I own. Does a great job with staying true to the original color of what you're shooting too.
Videos are not as good as the photos, but come on.... it's a phone. The image sensor is tiny - I don't know how people expect great video from anything with a sensor this small. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the video quality, considering this is a phone. Would you be able to shoot a wedding with it? No. Well.... you could, but there are better choices out there if you really want to shoot great video. Will it do a good job of capturing your buddies acting like idiots in reasonably good detail? You bet it will.

i agree, i love the camera for still photos, it works great, but i was under the impression that i would be able to produce some great footage and audio at concerts and such, not the case however 1080p still goes a long way.

[Q] How is the video mic at a gig?

See post 8 for an update
original question:

Anyone used the Z3 at a gig yet?
My wife has the Z1C and she went to a gig a few weeks ago, when she got home she was devistated as the videos she took sounded awful, everything was distorted/clipped
Does the Z3 improve on this?
cheers

The Z3 does have various recording modes (for loud environments, normal environments, and another one). Haven't had the possibility to test it yet, but hope it helps indeed. Common problem with many phones including the Z1, Galaxy series, LG G2 (Lumia 920/930, HTC One and iPhone are exceptions).
If there is a proper way to test it without going to a concert I'd give it a try but living in a flat I can't really turn up the volume that loud

Standard is auto yeah, you can change it in the general settings. Settings -> sound settings -> microphone sensitivity.
So not in the camera app...
I tested it in auto mode recording one of my drum students playing along to loud music & it was absolutely on par with my htc one m7 & lumia 925. Stereo recording & good mics DO indeed make a difference!
Brilliant, thanks
Awesome, having a concert on the 27th so I'll be sure to give it a try there as well...
OK, just got back from seeing Bryan Adams at the Leeds Arena last night, I was on the 4th row so it was a good test for the camera
here's what I found:
there's slight clipping in the audio, however, after running it through Adobe Premiere, I found out that it's only in the right channel, the left is a brilliant recording so I removed the right and made it mono, turns out this mic on the camera is brilliant for audio at a concert, if you are happy to remove one of the channels
HOWEVER
the video is truly awful, it never focused (he had spotlights on him all the time so was well lit), tried 1080p & 4k, both were terrible, luckily I had a QX30 with me so I tried that for 30 seconds and that was fine so I have a little bit of video that's OK. Touching the screen to focus did nothing.
Conclusion: brilliant audio totally let down by the video making it unwatchable
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceVN98kllNo
Hmmm, audio isn't too bad indeed (not great, but so much better compared to Z1 for example) but sucky about the focus issue... Gonna check it out myself as well. Going to a concert tomorrow so I'll see if I can shoot something there as well...
Thanks for the update!
Here's a clip I recorded last night with the Audio Recorder app.

that's all I can change in 4K
In 1080p, try center metering & different focal settings - like object tracking, etc... Maybe you'll have better results? 4k is rather restricting re: settings.

I recorded it at 1080, automatic everything. I just set the microphone sensitivity at the lowest before I went and it is a good thing that I did because it was LOUD.
I have another video from the back of the venue. I am uploading it right now to share. The sound is even better but with the first one I was about 5 meters from the PA. Stay tuned!

Cheers! Proper sound indeed, focus is still a bit off... Hard to test though (and you also don't want to be busy messing with your camera too much, you just want to enjoy of course )
Thanks, guys! About the focus: the light tech loooved using the blinders and flashing all the things (insert appropriate meme) so I am actually amazed at the focus there is. ☺
But as you said too, I was busier with drinking wine with my friends and headbanging than fiddling with the camera. ?
But folkmetal is an awesome test imo. Loud, lots of low and plenty of details in the mid and high.
I film and record a lot of music and I'm very pleased with my choice of phone!
