[Q] Camera quality.. disappointed.. - Touch Pro, Fuze General

I thought the fuze had a camera that rivaled the iphone 4 but apparently not.. I'm rather disappointed in the videocamera quality especially. The video that I took with it lacks fps and is quite laggy. The iphone 4 just killed it..
Here is a sample of what a fuze video is like (taken on my touch pro and friend put it on his channel; I'm not trying to promote views either)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrnkDwu4yDI
Is there any tweaking that can be done to improve quality? I have my videocamera on max resolution settings already or should I have left it stock?

You do realize that the fuze is a phone several years old, right? HTC never advertised the camera on the Fuze being anywhere near the quality of what the iPhone 4 claims...

Yeah I know but is there anything I can do to improve it?

There is a simple trick for FPS that works in many situations - lower the brightness to zero

Setting the resolution lower will yield higher-quality shots, but reduce the size of them. There have been tweaks for the camera, but the only one I can find/remember is the Panoramic shot one :/

I find that it works better in good light; I get pretty good video outdoors in daylight. The quality goes down the crapper in lower light situations. For the most part, I'm pretty happy with the video quality, I've gotten a lot of solid videos with it.

Hi you could have a look at some of the registry tweaks found on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638. Not all of the camera tweaks found on that thread apply but some like tweak 62. Improve Camera Recording Quality of MPEG4-VGA Videos
or 63. Unlock Additional Video Recording Formats + a few other may apply. It will require you to use a registry editor though. Hope this helps a little.

I tried #63 but I'm afraid to try #62 because the values differ so much and the folder doesn't exist

[Q] 5mp Camera quality (poor)

I took several indoor and outdoor pictures yesterday, and the setting was on 5mp. The results were very disappointing. I looked at the files, and it was obvious why. They were 1mb or less. I did not find any other setting (like"fine") as on other devices (N1)?
Pictures on my N1, which has a lower mp rating, are much better. I smell a rat here.
I also took some 720p videos. A 5 minute file is 275 mb, which seems a bit lite. I will see how it looks on HD TV. Similar files from still camera with 720p HD mode look pretty good.

They don't look bad on the MT4G screen, but on computer - (especially if you zoom even a little) - not as good as N1...
Update - I checked settings and the the camera was set to wide, so it apparently just crops the pictures to fit, so what you get is about 3.3 mp. Change to to 4:3, and the resolution goes up to 5mp.
I will take a few pictures set this way and see how they compare.
How about we start posting pics in this thread to see what everyone is talking about.
Seeing is believing!
Here is a pic I took yesterday while watching bad boys 2.
*Edit* this pic is 2592 x 1456 which = 3.8 mp and it's set to widescreen, setting it to 4:3 standard gives you 2592 x 1952 which = 5.1 mp
That looks pretty good! No? Or can it be better?

I don't know... I would easily trade ease of use (nice functions, dedicated shutter button, face recognition, LED flash) over many of the cameras, which may take slightly better photos.

There wouldn't be any difference in quality. Widescreen is simply a normal 4:3 that is digitally cropped on the top and bottom. Therefore, of course there are few pixels (lower resolution).

yeah but some people complained about the hd2 when it would tale widescreen mode pics that it isnt true 5mp it was 4mp and if u took off widescreen mode then it was true 5mp. so thats what i am going based off of. but i still think the pictures i take in widescreen mode on the mt4g are great in widescreen mode. i have no complaints
Is there any way to boost the frames per second for the video? I've been comparing photo and video quality pretty heavily with an iPhone 4, and overall the MT4G would be "better" IF the autofocus lag was fixed, and the fps for video was 30 fps.
I find the colors and auto-levels to be superior on the MT4G, but the fps thing is really annoying.
Looks like this camera has the same problem the G2 camera has.
Download the trial of Camera 360 and set the JPEG compression to a more reasonable level. The default camera app on the G2 compresses the everloving CRAP out of the pics and makes them look TERRIBLE.
I've taken some pics with the G2 camera via Camera360 that were remarkably improved over the stock Camera app.
The pictures at 4:3 were better, but the camera 360 pictures and features are better still. Can it be set up to open with the camera button?
Update - it must be the compression in the OEM camera app - would be nice if it could be turned off. The uncompressed Camera 360 shots are twice the size at the same resolution settings. When you look at them on computer screen and zoom in - big difference!

[Q] Where 1080p videos?

Can anyone with a Sensation post some 1080p clips on Youtube, or maybe upload an untouched version on some filehosting site? I heard they did some wizardry and drastically improved the video compared to previous offerings. Pretty please with sugar on top?
I second this
I'm just trying now, not sure what the outcome will be
I cant post links as my post count isnt high enough..
Only way I can think is going to YouTube and search my channel 'PygoReviews'
Theres a couple on my channel uploaded, then a longer one is on its way once its uploaded. Includes filming my fish, my chameleon then going outside, so different lighting perspectives.

Sorry to say, but the indoor video does not look good at all. Lots of noise and artifacts, blur, and dropped frames. The most annoying thing for me (which it shares with the Atrix and other Motorola phones) is it can't adjust exposure smoothly, like someone playing with the dimmer in a room; the slightest tilt and change in light suddenly dims or brightens the whole picture in big steps. Very annoying to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IOR5mGRibY
In the outdoor video, seems to suffer from the same problems as the iPhone, but seems worse. Overblown and oversaturated colors and contrast, killing detail and giving it a smeared cartoony appearance. Exposure problems are less noticeable but still a problem.
Doesn't seem much better than HTCs older phones. I think the Atrix might even be better. The iPhone4, GS1/GS2/Nexus, G2x and N8 are all better.
Here are a couple of videos from that guy that has all those youtube videos already. Sam's Tech. Makes a good comparison with the GS2 since its all from the same field, time, and wind conditions.
Sensation 720p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC9R35x5tEQ
Galaxy S II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jBQPMzhXQ0
Sensation 1080p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP6Zjs5prW4
Galaxy S II 1080p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDV91zfm6VU
GS2 is much smoother and more detailed, with better colors and far less exposure issues. Just really far ahead in a lot of respects. Sensation still has exposure issues. Colors/contrast are way overblown/oversaturated like the previous videos, killing detail. Framerate is not smooth, quite jerky. And no screaming foul, since they are both Youtube uploads. It is smooth sometimes, but then stumbles quite a bit on others. The weirdest thing are the colors. They shift very dramatically. The grass goes from pale green one moment (like its overcast) to yellowish and warm the next, probably because of some exposure issue as well since it changes only at certain angles. Then there's the very conspicuous patches of blue/purple that sometimes appear on the grass or strewn atop the trees. Ghoulish. The strange color artifacts and overall weird colors remind me of an old VHS tape on a jacked up tube TV, not to mention the other details.
Another issue is the audio capture. Both the GS2 and Sensation have sucky audio capture (The G2x, iPhone4, and N8 are much better), but the Sensation fares worse in this comparison since the sound of the wind is needle sharp like lightning cracking (GS2 more like thunder thud) and the guy's voice has a lot more of those sharp screechy cutoff sounds. And no idea of the technical term for this.
Video capture and quality is very high on my priority list, probably tied with screen quality for number one spot. I know some people don't give a hoot about the camera or video of a phone, but there's a ton of people who do, especially as a convergent device. If you are looking for good video capture, there are much better choices out there.
Could be worse. Check out this issue with the SGS II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QznuN_ZUh-A&NR=1
Some sort of random pink spot in the middle of every pic/video. Apparently quite a common issue there. New firmware doesnt fix it either.
Not saying I don't agree with everything you said about the Sensations videos. Exposure looks likes its being controlled by someone with a palsy. All over the place. Disappointing really.
Wow man, just read ur posts, they are all bashing HTC Phones/ Loving SGS Phones. BTW when u have sun setting on fiels it really gives the ground a pale yellow colour so if the video shows that it isnt a bad thing also when u limit the area to just the grass it focuses in that frame and adjusts the ISO and Exposure if its set to auto. So imo showing pale yellow colour when the sun is setting is a good thing, I know my Sony Cam takes the lighting into action unlike my nexus one cam who would always try to dim the lighting to the minimum thus kicking out the colours due to lighting, About SGSII or any other phone audio being better u can just thank your fanboyism for such judging. This is the first time i heard anyone sayin Mono audio sounds better than stereo :/. The audio might not be one with studio quality fidelity quality, but still awesome for a phone video Sensation video was equally smooth, its just that the guys hands were shaking, u can't blame your wife for becoming pregnant when u forgot to use a condom. And like u said Moderators dont give a rat ****

Looked ok and sound was alright despite wind. Now question. Does the video camera have any whitebalance options at all? There was quite a lot of washout of the colour in bright light. I would like to be able to set whitebalance to sunny perhaps to combat that kind of thing.

Yes, I saw it in a video and just checked the manual where it's listed and gives the impression that it is available (the photo only options mention "photo only" and white balance doesn't have that comment).

Just saw it, seems quite nice. Not as much detail as I'd like but more than decent. And definitely better than the first 720p videos for phones (those were absolute rubbish). Hey, it's even better than some "1080p" tv shows I've seen (you know the ones, where it seems the FullHD was achieved through very aggressive warpsharp algorithms).
Outdoor clips look good! but I'm worried about indoor / low light.. The samples from even the G2X looked smooth in very low light, but the Sensation clip looked to have the same awful judder that my Nexus One has..
PygoShlee, if you would be so kind, can you take a low light / indoor night time video in 720p and see if it's smooth?

[Q] Sensation Movie Urgent Query!

In a nutshell. Im gettting married next weekend and purchased an Olympus SZ-30MR camera to film in 1080p. But it's eating through the propiety batteries really fast and it takes hours to charge.
I was going to buy the Sensation after the honeymoon. But now im thinking of getting one this week to do most of the filming.
People who have one already can you test:
1. How long you can film without it stopping? Cameras limited to 29 mins.
2. How much filming can you do until battery is nearly flat?
3. Is quality any good?
Will be using a 32 gb card.
Big thanks in advance.

As far as I can see you're only limited by the size of your SD card. I just uploaded a quick test I did to youtube, it's probably still processing the higher quality versions. 30 second video is 38.6MB, 1920x1088 resolution (yes, 1088), 29fps.
It's definitely not the best video to check quality, but I was more interested in seeing the actual size of the videos created.
No clue on how much it drains battery as I've hardly used it so far

Thanks mate. Did you check the settings for that? Maybe there are some options to switch between 3gp and mp4?
Not a fan of 3gp. Bit rate is on the lower side. How do you feel when you view the clips on TV/monitor?
No option to change file format. Seems to be 3gp for all quality settings.
While changing quality settings I did notice it tells you how much video you can take for each setting. I could do about 3 and a half hours on my 16GB, with about 15GB free space atm.
Video looks nice on my laptop (1080p screen) and a bit better on my TV (also 1080p) when I'm sat on the sofa of the other side of the room. It's obvious there's compression there, but it's better than what I was expecting for a phone camera, and I definitely don't see any need for a "real" camcorder as long as I have this. It's more than enough for any "home videos".
I would in no way use a mobile to film memorable things like a wedding as you will regret it.
Take a good look at the Sony Cybershot HX9 that records excellent 1080p video. Excellent image stabilization, video and sound quality. Excellent camera too!
Really don't even bother with any mobiles for things like that.

The Sensation video as far as I can see after looking at a few Sensation videos on You Tube is even at 1080p its similar to the Desire HD video recording capabilities with the whole 'going dark and light all the time as you move around' which is ok but in honesty you will get better from a good compact camera as mobile video in general the sound is quite tin like.

Ok. In MY opinion it should be good enough. Since you have the good camera which eats through the battery like mad I have the following impression. You were planning on getting the Sensation either way so might as well get it now. You can use the Olympus for those WOW moments and then use the Sensation for those fun spontaneous moments (seems good enough for that in my opinion) so you don't have to be constantly be worrying about the proprietary batteries and their charge.
But like I said, that's MY take on it.

Interesting fact about camera

Has anyone noticed that camcorder on Desire S records videos at only ~22 FPS? No matter how good light conditions are and regardless of recording resolution/bitrate - video always comes out at ~22 FPS (or less in low light conditions).
This is not because of hardware limitations, but because of camera module itself. It has noticable lag when looking through viewfinder and, of course, camera can not record what the camera can not see (more frames per sec).
On the other hand, front camera can record video at ~29 FPS VGA! Bad quality, but yeah, more FPS.
Why, in Gods name, would HTC put such bad camera module on back and (in terms of video recording fps) and better camera on front?
What method are you using to determine the FPS?
If it is just a software issue than a custom ROM should resolve it.
I have used "GSpot" app, and I don't believe this is a software issue, as I'm on my 5th custom rom.
Also, I don't think that my unit is faulty or something, all desire s cameras are like this (compared). Its a shame, because video quality is quite nice, but fps...
http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htm
yeah i noticed that the other day i thought it was because i had an 8gb class 2 mem car but i recently got a 16gb class 6 and it still looks choppy and if as u say its and hard wear defect or they did it on purpose then their is no easy fix
this sucks. it kindof defeats the point of having 720p when the fps is less than 30...
Yh this is the one thing which is annoying but not a major disadvantage. Hope there is some software which can rectify this.

Iffy Camera Quality?

So, i'm coming from a G2x, which has pretty substantial camera quality if you ask me, but I was anxious to move to something better. But am I the only one that thinks the pictures taken with the One S are a little, I dunno, grainy? They just don't look as smooth as the ones I took with the G2x. Also, I noticed that sometimes the pictures I take come out blurry, I guess the camera is so instant it has that effect. Any way I can fix this?
Grainy could be from the pentile screen, look at them on the pc and see if it has the same problem.
I thought that as well, but there is a marked difference in quality between photos taken on both devices when viewed on the One S. I'll try seeing if there is a difference on the PC anyway.
Personally don't have any issues with the quality on my device.
On the topic of Camera - I'd like to see NODO-GT make a version of his Camera MOD for the One S

I came from a G2x and I feel the picture quality on the One S is superior, but not by a huge margin. The faster shutter speed, stills within video and the continuous mode are also huge improvements.

The G2x is the shame of T-Mobile. To even compare anything HTC to LG is like comparing a Ferrari to a Geo Metro. The camera on the HTC One S is the best out of any phone I have had in the last 2 years, and I have had all the flagship devices.
I really understand what you meant. I have my Xperia Arc which I'm looking to replace with the One S and after browsing sample photos I thought the picture quality was so mediocre. Colors and contrast are really great when zoomed out but in 100% resolution when comparing shots on gsmarena and other review sites I thought that they looked really bad. Bad, because they looked extremely grainy. Sometimes when there are sharp edges you can see small dots of various colors - kind of like compression artifacts or extreme oversharpening but more weird. It looks really bad. I was very dissatisfied with what I saw and when I posted my findings on another board most people didn't know what the fuss was about. Strange, because otherwise the pictures would look really well - I'm surprised that the HTC team didn't fix that issue, because the sensor appears to be really good - it's clearly the camera software and post-processing that appears to introduce those strange artifacts.
