Iffy Camera Quality? - HTC One S

So, i'm coming from a G2x, which has pretty substantial camera quality if you ask me, but I was anxious to move to something better. But am I the only one that thinks the pictures taken with the One S are a little, I dunno, grainy? They just don't look as smooth as the ones I took with the G2x. Also, I noticed that sometimes the pictures I take come out blurry, I guess the camera is so instant it has that effect. Any way I can fix this?

Grainy could be from the pentile screen, look at them on the pc and see if it has the same problem.

I thought that as well, but there is a marked difference in quality between photos taken on both devices when viewed on the One S. I'll try seeing if there is a difference on the PC anyway.

Personally don't have any issues with the quality on my device.
On the topic of Camera - I'd like to see NODO-GT make a version of his Camera MOD for the One S
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533238

I came from a G2x and I feel the picture quality on the One S is superior, but not by a huge margin. The faster shutter speed, stills within video and the continuous mode are also huge improvements.

The G2x is the shame of T-Mobile. To even compare anything HTC to LG is like comparing a Ferrari to a Geo Metro. The camera on the HTC One S is the best out of any phone I have had in the last 2 years, and I have had all the flagship devices.

I really understand what you meant. I have my Xperia Arc which I'm looking to replace with the One S and after browsing sample photos I thought the picture quality was so mediocre. Colors and contrast are really great when zoomed out but in 100% resolution when comparing shots on gsmarena and other review sites I thought that they looked really bad. Bad, because they looked extremely grainy. Sometimes when there are sharp edges you can see small dots of various colors - kind of like compression artifacts or extreme oversharpening but more weird. It looks really bad. I was very dissatisfied with what I saw and when I posted my findings on another board most people didn't know what the fuss was about. Strange, because otherwise the pictures would look really well - I'm surprised that the HTC team didn't fix that issue, because the sensor appears to be really good - it's clearly the camera software and post-processing that appears to introduce those strange artifacts.

So is there an available fix on a custom ROM? I noticed one ROM was boasting better camera, but that was the only ROM which did!

[Q] Where 1080p videos?

Can anyone with a Sensation post some 1080p clips on Youtube, or maybe upload an untouched version on some filehosting site? I heard they did some wizardry and drastically improved the video compared to previous offerings. Pretty please with sugar on top?
I second this
I'm just trying now, not sure what the outcome will be
I cant post links as my post count isnt high enough..
Only way I can think is going to YouTube and search my channel 'PygoReviews'
Theres a couple on my channel uploaded, then a longer one is on its way once its uploaded. Includes filming my fish, my chameleon then going outside, so different lighting perspectives.

Please, upload a original sample to any fileholder (megaupload.com ,etc...).
Becouse Youtube always recode video.
Yes please upload unmodified clip onto say mediafire, megaupload, oron, filesonic, rapidshare, etc. Would appreciate it.
Here's the links to the two videos pygoreviews uploaded. Thanks for uploading.

Sorry to say, but the indoor video does not look good at all. Lots of noise and artifacts, blur, and dropped frames. The most annoying thing for me (which it shares with the Atrix and other Motorola phones) is it can't adjust exposure smoothly, like someone playing with the dimmer in a room; the slightest tilt and change in light suddenly dims or brightens the whole picture in big steps. Very annoying to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IOR5mGRibY
In the outdoor video, seems to suffer from the same problems as the iPhone, but seems worse. Overblown and oversaturated colors and contrast, killing detail and giving it a smeared cartoony appearance. Exposure problems are less noticeable but still a problem.
Doesn't seem much better than HTCs older phones. I think the Atrix might even be better. The iPhone4, GS1/GS2/Nexus, G2x and N8 are all better.
Here are a couple of videos from that guy that has all those youtube videos already. Sam's Tech. Makes a good comparison with the GS2 since its all from the same field, time, and wind conditions.
Sensation 720p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC9R35x5tEQ
Galaxy S II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jBQPMzhXQ0
Sensation 1080p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP6Zjs5prW4
Galaxy S II 1080p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDV91zfm6VU
GS2 is much smoother and more detailed, with better colors and far less exposure issues. Just really far ahead in a lot of respects. Sensation still has exposure issues. Colors/contrast are way overblown/oversaturated like the previous videos, killing detail. Framerate is not smooth, quite jerky. And no screaming foul, since they are both Youtube uploads. It is smooth sometimes, but then stumbles quite a bit on others. The weirdest thing are the colors. They shift very dramatically. The grass goes from pale green one moment (like its overcast) to yellowish and warm the next, probably because of some exposure issue as well since it changes only at certain angles. Then there's the very conspicuous patches of blue/purple that sometimes appear on the grass or strewn atop the trees. Ghoulish. The strange color artifacts and overall weird colors remind me of an old VHS tape on a jacked up tube TV, not to mention the other details.
Another issue is the audio capture. Both the GS2 and Sensation have sucky audio capture (The G2x, iPhone4, and N8 are much better), but the Sensation fares worse in this comparison since the sound of the wind is needle sharp like lightning cracking (GS2 more like thunder thud) and the guy's voice has a lot more of those sharp screechy cutoff sounds. And no idea of the technical term for this.
Video capture and quality is very high on my priority list, probably tied with screen quality for number one spot. I know some people don't give a hoot about the camera or video of a phone, but there's a ton of people who do, especially as a convergent device. If you are looking for good video capture, there are much better choices out there.
Could be worse. Check out this issue with the SGS II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QznuN_ZUh-A&NR=1
Some sort of random pink spot in the middle of every pic/video. Apparently quite a common issue there. New firmware doesnt fix it either.
Not saying I don't agree with everything you said about the Sensations videos. Exposure looks likes its being controlled by someone with a palsy. All over the place. Disappointing really.
Wow man, just read ur posts, they are all bashing HTC Phones/ Loving SGS Phones. BTW when u have sun setting on fiels it really gives the ground a pale yellow colour so if the video shows that it isnt a bad thing also when u limit the area to just the grass it focuses in that frame and adjusts the ISO and Exposure if its set to auto. So imo showing pale yellow colour when the sun is setting is a good thing, I know my Sony Cam takes the lighting into action unlike my nexus one cam who would always try to dim the lighting to the minimum thus kicking out the colours due to lighting, About SGSII or any other phone audio being better u can just thank your fanboyism for such judging. This is the first time i heard anyone sayin Mono audio sounds better than stereo :/. The audio might not be one with studio quality fidelity quality, but still awesome for a phone video Sensation video was equally smooth, its just that the guys hands were shaking, u can't blame your wife for becoming pregnant when u forgot to use a condom. And like u said Moderators dont give a rat ****
Just putting up another of mediafire. Off to work again so will post up a link later. Its outside today, so be prepared for alot of wind noise Bloody weather.

Looked ok and sound was alright despite wind. Now question. Does the video camera have any whitebalance options at all? There was quite a lot of washout of the colour in bright light. I would like to be able to set whitebalance to sunny perhaps to combat that kind of thing.

Yes, I saw it in a video and just checked the manual where it's listed and gives the impression that it is available (the photo only options mention "photo only" and white balance doesn't have that comment).

Just saw it, seems quite nice. Not as much detail as I'd like but more than decent. And definitely better than the first 720p videos for phones (those were absolute rubbish). Hey, it's even better than some "1080p" tv shows I've seen (you know the ones, where it seems the FullHD was achieved through very aggressive warpsharp algorithms).
Outdoor clips look good! but I'm worried about indoor / low light.. The samples from even the G2X looked smooth in very low light, but the Sensation clip looked to have the same awful judder that my Nexus One has..
PygoShlee, if you would be so kind, can you take a low light / indoor night time video in 720p and see if it's smooth?

HOX vs SGIII: Cameras, and final take on multitasking. Yes, I have searched...

Hi Folks,
Yes, I have searched and read lots of topics about HOX vs SGIII, and I can summarize that the main differences are the screen, the build/form factor, the proprietary interface (TouchWiz or Sense), the battery (removable or not), the memory (micro SD or not), the RAM, the multitasking, and the cameras. This last part, the cameras, is where I am not sure if either folks here do not care, I have not found the right posts, or it has simply not been discussed before.
In particular, there is this great video comparison under http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1747204 , and almost at the end of the video there are video recordings and snaps with both phones. Unfortunately this thread is closed, but I would like to know if the SGIII camera is just that great compared to the HOX, except for one fact: that the HOX can take better still pictures under low light conditions due to the higher aperture. In the above video, the video recording from the SGIII seems much better than the HOX's.
Finally, has the HOX multitasking issue been resolved, or it has just been dropped because the HOX+ is just around the corner?
Cheers,
G.
Got to play with my fathers s3 a bit they are very comparable. next time i see him i will load pics and vids from his phone onto my pc would have him send the pics i took but it would change the size. so if you want i can send direct comparisons to you or link them to you in my dropobox. i will make sure setting across both devices will be the same.it will be same pics and vids from both devices. when i was comparing the other day really was wondering how different they would look when loaded onto a device with the same screen.Stills did seem clearer from mine didnt even look at video capture though.
Low light performance is not only dependent on aperture, but also depends how the photos are processed by hardware and software. HTC has historically been notorious for over-processing images in low light situations (giving a pixelated or dotty appearance), and the One X while an improvement is not completely free of this.
I've read several "pro" reviews on the phones, and comparisons between them on various websites. Also read plenty of comments on here comparing the two. Some say the GS3 camera is marginally better, while some say the One X is better. The difference is subtle, One X is better is some conditions, worse in others, but only slightly. I think you would be hard pressed to declare a clear winner and its pretty much a draw. As far as camera, you will probably be happy with either phone.

Thank you. Yes, that would be great comparo. Even better if you could do videos of the same with both. In the great video I linked above there are two videos of the same set up taken with both phones. Maybe is just me, but the SGIII video seems much better on colors, sharpness, and adjusting the focus on the situation.
The overall pictures taken by both seem very similar in many reviews I have read, but video seems much better on the SGIII. Therefore, would be great if you can post videos taken with both.
Cheers.

My biggest complaint so far: Front Facing Camera Image Quality

Hi all,
Just picked up a v10 from tmo yesterday and been playing around with it. I've seen two different V10's and both have had very unimpressive front facing image quality. I know that it's 5 MP vs the G4's 8 MP. However, whenever I open it up, it looks very grainy and soft in low light. During the day in bright light outside, it looks very oversharpened and the dynamic range is poor. The sky is typically completely blown out, and my face looks a bit unrealistic with the oversharpening. I've played around with the beauty feature and tried it at different levels. Indoors, even with beauty set to 0, the image was still very soft. I also did HDR off and on and it didn't make a difference. When recording video, it looks a lot better. These do seem like software issues. I'm just really surprised since LG is really pushing photography/video with this phone, but the front camera images just don't look good at all to me. I'm going to be using the V10 for a bit to see if I want to keep it, or if I want to go back to the 6P. I don't expect the same quality of front facing camera on the V10, as the 6P. I just didn't expect it to be this much worse. I also compared it to a G4, and the G4 looked great. I don't think the 3 MP difference should make that much of a difference.
Anyway, let me know if you guys have experienced this too.
You need to remember the V10 ups the screen gamma (everything looks pastel/washed out) and adds software sharpening when you're in sunlight, so what you're seeing on the screen in sunlight is not really what the camera is capturing.

It does look a bit better after I take it. I also uploaded it to drive and looked at it on my computer. It's still somewhat oversharpened. Can you explain the screen gamma? So, everything that's on the screen will look pastel like? So, if I send someone a picture or upload it to instagram/FB it will look better to other people?
Edit: In decent light, the front facing camera looks better in snapchat, however it tends to be fairly dark. I guess it uses a lower ISO? not sure. But it also looks less processed. The back camera is also pretty dark in snapchat.
I will say I LOVE the wide angle selfie... I mean I have NEVER been a selfie kinda guy but it really does capture alot. I can get me and my family of 4 easily in one pic.
The image quality could be better but it's nice to be able to get more into the picture.

Coming from Note 4, I do agree with you that the FCC is a little bit lacking on the sharpness department. It seems like there's an overly-aggressive noise-reduction being applied even with the "Beauty" mode turned to 0. I just that the selfies looks smushy compared to the ones taken by my note 4.

Does it make a difference which ffc you're using? The wide angle lens tends to be slightly grainier compared to the solo lens. It defaults to wide..
I wonder what's the actual megapixel capability of the front sensor as well as it's pixel size..
Note. I need beauty mode setting of 10. I'm still hella oogly set at highest... :silly:

So, what I've noticed is that when using the stock camera it tends to oversharpen making it look artificial. But, if I use snapchat, or google camera, it makes it seem like it can't focus or something. The image looks very, very soft and even a bit blurred. In low light, it just looks dark and noisy.

Nope, both look the same to me. Honestly, I compared a front facing image with a Nexus 5, and while the nexus 5 is obviously low resolution it actually didn't look THAT much worse. I really wish they kept the single camera from the G4. It looked great when I checked it out. I'm still debating about keeping this or going back to the 6P. If the V10 had the same FFC as the 6P/G4, had the same slow motion capabilities as the 6P, and maybe have a slightly more saturated screen I would have to say the V10 is definitely a much better phone. I still might end up keeping it though. I do like the manual control, better video capture and of course the sd card/removable battery. Also, I prefer the design/build of the V10.
horrible camera
just got the LG V10 around mid November. Mostly bought it for the camera...was supposed to be the top of the line and have great reviews. I HATE this camera. The pics all looked washed out and dull. I have told Verizon about this twice and the last time the kid was kinda smart assy about it and said I'm not gonna get saturated pretty pics. I'm going to get detail pics of what I'm actually seeing. I want my beautiful, colorful pics back. I mean who doesn't want colorful vibrant pics! He told me if I want that then I'm going to have to edit my pics. Very disappointed in this phone...if I could get rid of it I would...

I don't know...I'm trying Verizon one more time here in a few minutes. I will ask them about that. I sure hope so. I'm already looking into selling the phone and coming up with the difference to pay it off to get a new one. I show people all the time and they all say the same thing. I like bright, beautiful pics. With this camera there's no vibrant colors and some of the pics look like there's like a "hazy" over them. After I use and editor...they look really nice (I will admit) but I'm not going to edit every pic I take when my Samsung Galaxy s5 they all looked good and I would pic just a few to tweak up to make look even better. Not edit every pic to have it look as it should!

Mate 9 camera quirks

Hi gang,
Took the beast out for some shooting today.
What I love:
The camera software. All the settings, pro-mode, effects and stuff are really nice.
Camera is very fast. Very unlike some reviews claiming this is the slowest camera out there.
What I don't like:
Pic sharpness. Most pics come out with some water paint effect. Backgrounds, distance shots all come out washed. Macro shots are sort of OK but zooming in, washed out to some extend.
So I played around with various settings, differed sizes, all the same free post-processing effects.
I compared with similar shots I look last week with the old LG G4. Well, they are 200% better. Lets hope this is a processing issue that will be fixed with the next update.
What are your experiences?

Don`t forget we are running pre-release software, an update to smooth things up will come soon. Besides that i don`t recognise your issues on my device so far.
I am on B110. Is this a pre-release software?
I have a major complain regarding camera in video. I think is related to the stabilization. Almost all my video in FHD looks like waves. The image is very shaky. This is my second device as the first one was replaced. Anyone else observed this?
I really hope can be solved in an update.

It's not super bad, some shots are OK but comparing apples with apples, the M9 is not on par with other recent top brand products.

Just tested it to see if it happens here too. Indeed when filming the image stutters on the screen (well, it's night here so not ideal conditions) but when playing it it looks nice, no shakes at all. That was at 1080p, 60fps. At 1080p, 30fps it looks smooth on screen and also when playing it.
Anyone noticed that the hdr mode is always on in bright light?
You will get the same picture with or without hdr, and that's something not good at all.
Is there a setting that turn hdr off other than using pro mode?
Just upgraded today to b126 and looks promising just checked it's 6x zoom and it is great

So, i have had mate 9 for 2 weeks now, not impressed, when i compare it to the galaxy s7 edge, it cannot compete, the galaxy s7 edge wins hands down...., also, the galaxy s8 looks to be worth waiting for, march/april release will see a great phone after their note phones needed washing out with water, lol.
Also, i wanted to ask you, i have the MHA-L00 china version and my Hi voice app only works in chinese, as does the music app, can you post and tell me if your international MHA-L29 has hi voice ((assistant app) and music app in english, if it does..., could i ask that you post the apk install files for these apps in english. As far as i am aware, Hi voice app is embedded into the system so may not be possible.
If possible, i wanted instructions to flash the international rom onto the chinese phone?

Hi gang,
Took the beast out for some shooting today.

Well, I couldn't agree more still having an old good lg g3 by the hand for comparisons makes me angry and sad about mate9's picture quality... seriously thinking about selling the-brand-new-two-months-old phone and returning to LG RAW mode looks like the only hope, combined with snapseed it gives somehow sharper and nicer images.... my guess is that default JPG postprocessing seriously sucks hopefully huawei will fix it in some future updates...

Poat up some comparison photos please.
And what, specifically, is bothering you about the Mate 9 photos ?

I think you're kidding right? There is no way a G3 will come close.
?
Well, the first pic is from the G3, full picture quality, automode, no tweaking
Second pic is from Mate 9 full picture quality, automode, no tweaking.
The V10.... Is resting in peace . Will be getting a MoBo soon from aliexpress and reviving it though.

Is it just me or is my camera faulty (grainy photos)?

Hi everyone,
I am not talking about the distortion issue here.
I just got my device and have taken a few quick photos, mostly on AUTO. For some reason some of the photos look extremely grainy and of low quality, others seem better. To be honest I don't know what to make of it. I will have to do some more tests in better light conditions but to be honest I was quite shocked how bad some photos look in comparison to my GFs Huawei P10 for example. My HTC M9 photos felt more sharp.
It feels like Xperia is going crazy with the post processing and blurring/graining everything up. Just look at the computer desk photo, it looks like someone overused photoshop filters.
I have attached a few photos for reference.
Is it just me or is this the way the camera behaves?
No, it's not just you. I have no idea how reviewers ended up calling the camera "one of the best shooters around". Considering this is a flagship device, the camera sucks. Plain and simple. I'm getting more n more pi**** I didn't chose the S8 and put my trust in Sony.
I get the same results on the Sony camera app. Try to use Open Camera, at least for me the difference is very big, especially on detail.
The Post processing is totaly random and hilarious. Currently using Open camera and snap camera. There ist still some unwanted Post processing but Not as much as before.

Haven you happened to find out why in manual mode one can only go up to 1/10s exposure time?
