G2X's Camera is very bad - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hi today i was trying to record some videos on full 1080p and i noticed that the camera is very bad on this . I compaire to my nexus s that records 480p, Nexus s records better video even tough its not HD, what u guy think of the camera do u feel thet its 1080p or even 720p quality?

I think it's pretty darn good, though I do think it's better at 720 than it is at 1080. The Engadget review said essentially the same thing.
I have a Nexus as well, it's camera worked just fine also, just not as fine as the G2x camera does.
There is a thread around here somewhere with a number of G2x YouTube test videos in it, lemme see if I can find it...
ETA: Here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1055611

i dont know i dont see it being better then nexus s, i'm recording it outside and when i move around and record the video becomes very bad starts dropping frames, i do the same with nexus s its very good , i think its just a marketing to just put 1080p on the box to sell phones.

This phone does 24FPS at 1080p but 30FPS with 720p. 720p should be smoother.

I did 720p too its smoother but the video looks blurred, and yes I cleaned the lenses

Could be just your phone. Mine is better than my Vibrant. Does Nexus S even have 720p recording? I thought it doesn't.

no the Nexus s is 480p but the videos look much better on my hdtv then G2X's videos

I never tried 1080p but 720p does a good job.

No issues here. Tried both resolutions.

Maybe it's your phone. My video is better than it was on my Nexus and my Vibrant. I have shot videos in 720 and 1080.

I agree, I have 2 full 1080p native res LCD tvs one Philips and one Panasonic. The G2x @ 1080p or 720p is the best camera with the smoothest video I have seen to date from a cell phone.
Be nice if the vids where in mp4 instead of 3gp but the camera quality if just the best there is.
Going to have a ball using it at the mothers day get together tomorrow lol.
Tested on 2 full 1080p native res TVs and my pc monitor wich is 32in @720p native res though.
The 2nd phone in video camcord quality will have to go to the samsung line up with the Vibrant for example. Vibrant owns the HTC phones Vibrant > G2 / MyTouch4G / Evo4G. HTC @ 720p was very choppy frame rate. Vibrant / G2x Constantly smooth. G2x with the edge being able to go up to 1080p

I Agree with THE VIBRANT CAMERA BEING SUPERIOR

uncalled for

These posts are what makes people leave XDA.
If you read through the posts it appears this user has a bad plastic cover over the camera and was the cause of his initial opinion of the camera.
I see you have a tmobile tag. I understand that this is tmobiles new stance on treating customers but dont bring it here.

[Q] 5mp Camera quality (poor)

I took several indoor and outdoor pictures yesterday, and the setting was on 5mp. The results were very disappointing. I looked at the files, and it was obvious why. They were 1mb or less. I did not find any other setting (like"fine") as on other devices (N1)?
Pictures on my N1, which has a lower mp rating, are much better. I smell a rat here.
I also took some 720p videos. A 5 minute file is 275 mb, which seems a bit lite. I will see how it looks on HD TV. Similar files from still camera with 720p HD mode look pretty good.

They don't look bad on the MT4G screen, but on computer - (especially if you zoom even a little) - not as good as N1...
Update - I checked settings and the the camera was set to wide, so it apparently just crops the pictures to fit, so what you get is about 3.3 mp. Change to to 4:3, and the resolution goes up to 5mp.
I will take a few pictures set this way and see how they compare.
How about we start posting pics in this thread to see what everyone is talking about.
Seeing is believing!
Here is a pic I took yesterday while watching bad boys 2.
*Edit* this pic is 2592 x 1456 which = 3.8 mp and it's set to widescreen, setting it to 4:3 standard gives you 2592 x 1952 which = 5.1 mp
That looks pretty good! No? Or can it be better?

I don't know... I would easily trade ease of use (nice functions, dedicated shutter button, face recognition, LED flash) over many of the cameras, which may take slightly better photos.

There wouldn't be any difference in quality. Widescreen is simply a normal 4:3 that is digitally cropped on the top and bottom. Therefore, of course there are few pixels (lower resolution).

yeah but some people complained about the hd2 when it would tale widescreen mode pics that it isnt true 5mp it was 4mp and if u took off widescreen mode then it was true 5mp. so thats what i am going based off of. but i still think the pictures i take in widescreen mode on the mt4g are great in widescreen mode. i have no complaints
Is there any way to boost the frames per second for the video? I've been comparing photo and video quality pretty heavily with an iPhone 4, and overall the MT4G would be "better" IF the autofocus lag was fixed, and the fps for video was 30 fps.
I find the colors and auto-levels to be superior on the MT4G, but the fps thing is really annoying.
Looks like this camera has the same problem the G2 camera has.
Download the trial of Camera 360 and set the JPEG compression to a more reasonable level. The default camera app on the G2 compresses the everloving CRAP out of the pics and makes them look TERRIBLE.
I've taken some pics with the G2 camera via Camera360 that were remarkably improved over the stock Camera app.
The pictures at 4:3 were better, but the camera 360 pictures and features are better still. Can it be set up to open with the camera button?
Update - it must be the compression in the OEM camera app - would be nice if it could be turned off. The uncompressed Camera 360 shots are twice the size at the same resolution settings. When you look at them on computer screen and zoom in - big difference!

Is video recorder, when at 480, 30 or 60fps?

By the looks of things, I would guess 60. I might be wrong though. I thought I would hate the video camera because of the lower resolution. I also expected it to be the usual low and blurry framerate of my previous phones. I was pleasantly surprised. One of the things I don't like about it is the lens is too wide angle for me. I prefer something closer to what the average person sees which is in the 50mm range (slr). It puts things too far away in the picture when I'm actually close to what I'm capturing.
30
I believe that it is 30 fps.
Comparing this camera (photo and video) to my old HTC Evo is all the proof I will ever need that Megapixels don't mean crap!
HTC camera have always been crap another reason i dont like HTC anymore
lol even my friends thunderbolt 8MP takes horrid pics...he wanted it becasue it was 8MP and i told him doesn't mean ****. He didnt listen and made him eat his words when we compared pics side by side
but both were put to shame by his moms iphone 4 camera

[Q] Sensation Movie Urgent Query!

In a nutshell. Im gettting married next weekend and purchased an Olympus SZ-30MR camera to film in 1080p. But it's eating through the propiety batteries really fast and it takes hours to charge.
I was going to buy the Sensation after the honeymoon. But now im thinking of getting one this week to do most of the filming.
People who have one already can you test:
1. How long you can film without it stopping? Cameras limited to 29 mins.
2. How much filming can you do until battery is nearly flat?
3. Is quality any good?
Will be using a 32 gb card.
Big thanks in advance.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
As far as I can see you're only limited by the size of your SD card. I just uploaded a quick test I did to youtube, it's probably still processing the higher quality versions. 30 second video is 38.6MB, 1920x1088 resolution (yes, 1088), 29fps.
It's definitely not the best video to check quality, but I was more interested in seeing the actual size of the videos created.
No clue on how much it drains battery as I've hardly used it so far

Thanks mate. Did you check the settings for that? Maybe there are some options to switch between 3gp and mp4?
Not a fan of 3gp. Bit rate is on the lower side. How do you feel when you view the clips on TV/monitor?
No option to change file format. Seems to be 3gp for all quality settings.
While changing quality settings I did notice it tells you how much video you can take for each setting. I could do about 3 and a half hours on my 16GB, with about 15GB free space atm.
Video looks nice on my laptop (1080p screen) and a bit better on my TV (also 1080p) when I'm sat on the sofa of the other side of the room. It's obvious there's compression there, but it's better than what I was expecting for a phone camera, and I definitely don't see any need for a "real" camcorder as long as I have this. It's more than enough for any "home videos".
I would in no way use a mobile to film memorable things like a wedding as you will regret it.
Take a good look at the Sony Cybershot HX9 that records excellent 1080p video. Excellent image stabilization, video and sound quality. Excellent camera too!
Really don't even bother with any mobiles for things like that.

Yeah go borrow/rent a good camera/camcorder or even hire a wedding film person (make sure they don't run off with your money). Video on phones is only for convenience. If you can do MUCH better, why wouldn't you?

The Sensation video as far as I can see after looking at a few Sensation videos on You Tube is even at 1080p its similar to the Desire HD video recording capabilities with the whole 'going dark and light all the time as you move around' which is ok but in honesty you will get better from a good compact camera as mobile video in general the sound is quite tin like.
I would try and get most capturing done on your compact camera as its going to be better. Shame you cant get a Sony Cybershot HX9 as that is a frigging awesome compact camera for photos and HD video just come out as well.

Ok. In MY opinion it should be good enough. Since you have the good camera which eats through the battery like mad I have the following impression. You were planning on getting the Sensation either way so might as well get it now. You can use the Olympus for those WOW moments and then use the Sensation for those fun spontaneous moments (seems good enough for that in my opinion) so you don't have to be constantly be worrying about the proprietary batteries and their charge.
But like I said, that's MY take on it.

Front Facing Camera Extremely Dark

I just tried to video chat with my brother who was sitting right next to em in a fairly well lit room. His video came through nice and clear, from his Iphone 4 and mine was extremely dark, I couldn't even see myself. We were Both on Tmobile 4g, is anyone else having this issue?

i was having the same issue. overall it is not just video chat, but in the camera application itself the FFC is extremely dark compared to my MT4G. made sure that all of plastic is removed as well.
it seems a simple software update could fix this. the rear cam is perfect, but there are definite issues with the FFC on this device.
We need some sample shots. I beleive the ffc is dark in video chats, because the back cover is covering part of the camera and when compare to my Epic 4g, the ffc in the epic is much better. light is much better.
The sensation's ffc has higher mp than epic's and the iphone, but it seems it hasn't been built the right way.
Some of you are happy with the ffc, it might be that some phones ffc is closer to the ff camera hole in the case.

I can tell you that the above is not my case. I have taken the back cover off and had the same problem. Same darkness where as I was using the MT4G and never experienced this. The one thing that does make it better is changing the settings in the camera app however this does not carryover to video chat programs like Tango, etc.
Going to extremely bright rooms does help solve the problem but overall it seems more than just the cover issue you speak of.
wow. if that's the case, then it's really bad, but how come others are not complaining about this. some even compare it to the iphone 4? I know the iphone 4 ffc is better than the Epic 4G, and my Epic 4G is better than the Htc Sensation I have today. What's going on with this?
You can adjust the settings on the FFC...in the "image adjustment" selection
I've not been having any problems. But I do live in the UK, maybe the US Sensation has different software for the FFC?

Correct in the camera application, but these adjustments don't seem to carry over to video chat programs.
My FFC is definitely dark compared to my MT4G.. I can't even see myself in the low light like I can on the MT4G.
I have to second this issue. The FFC is simply underexposed, especially compared to the iphone 4.
turn the lights ON
Not having any issues with my FFC. Seems decent quality for VGA.
It's really dark. The one on my iPod touch is so much better in the same situation.

Makes me look like a shadow in mid to low lighting. Also had an almost orange like hue to it. Needs to be fixed. I doubt they will address this issue in any update though unless we raise hell about it.

The FFC is crap. It does have a toggle for more or less light, but that's about it. You will do best if you are in a well lit area - lots of soft light on your face and not much light in the background. The camera itself doesn't give you a lot of leeway.

I just recently used the video portion and I agree. The video quality is no where near the picture quality. The audio for video is really bad.
This phone impresses me every time I use it to take a photo and I'm not surprised to see it rated as one of the best. It takes photos that are just about as good as a Canon point and shoot that I own. Does a great job with staying true to the original color of what you're shooting too.
Videos are not as good as the photos, but come on.... it's a phone. The image sensor is tiny - I don't know how people expect great video from anything with a sensor this small. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the video quality, considering this is a phone. Would you be able to shoot a wedding with it? No. Well.... you could, but there are better choices out there if you really want to shoot great video. Will it do a good job of capturing your buddies acting like idiots in reasonably good detail? You bet it will.
