[Q] No Volume control? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my 32GB EEE pad tranformer yesterday (via hhGregg). It's been a treat so far, playing with the goodies. So far the screen seems great, the build quality is good, no dead pixels, no light leaks.. pretty satisfied. No keyboard yet, but hopefully I'll find one in stock soon!
There's only one huge terrible problem with my Pad: the volume controls don't work.
If I change volume by the rocker switch OR by the onscreen touch, the pad smoothly responds graphically with the slider moving, but it does NOT actually affect the volume! However at the very lowest 0 setting, the pad does mute.
All other volume levels seem to be exactly the same intensity (pretty loud!)
This affects both the speakers and the headphones the exact same way.
Tons of googling and searching on this forum have turned up nothing, which gives me a sinking feeling. But it still feels like it's a software problem.
This is a stock pad, no rooting or fancy changes (it's 12 hours old). The machine did auto-update and it says its running Android 3.0.1 kernel 2.6.36.3.00004-g069b8b5 and build number HRI66.US.epad-8.2.3.13-20110511.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for welcoming me to the community! This is already a lot of fun.

Don't worry buddy, its a honeycomb glitch,
It happened on xoom as well, a restart would normally fix the problem,
Ha, speak of the devil, I actually have that problem now too. Hopefully its fixed in 3.1.

I have never had this issue? Even when I had a xoom. You could try holding the power button down for 10-15 seconds; until it reboots. That might fix it? Its does kind of a hard reset, but no data is lost. I have always been able to adjust the volume. From real low, to real high.

/\ What he said. A hard reset will fix the problem each time it arises.

Boom! As you all reassured me, a power-off reboot fixed it!
Thanks much!

Great help
Had exactly the same problem and quick search in the forum brought me to this thread. A quick reboot fixed the problem. Thanks a bunch.

[Poll] Do you have problem with your touchscreen?

I just got the 32G version transformer. There is a very annoying problem with the touch screen: sometimes it is not registering my touch at all, sometimes it seems that you have to push hard.
I am not sure if this is the touch screen problem or the system is busy with something else?
Anybody else having the problem? Any ideas to solve it?
The firmware is the latest version.
I too have noticed this issue from time to time. Not sure what it is though.

The touchscreen does seem a bit insensitive on my 16GB TF. Not necessarily unusable, but sometimes I have to touch a button a couple times to get it to respond. Most often the menu button that appears in the top right corner of some apps.
I am pretty sure this is a software related problem. Sometimes, the touch screen feels quite responsive.
What is the official way to report problems to ASUS?

Indeed. The touch digitizer and even it's driver works flawlessly - start Fruit Ninja HD and you can enjoy most responsive multi-fingers (4 or maybe more) touch ever.
But everything except games is considerably less responsive to touch.
The touchscreen on mine just completely died. Completely not responsive. I wish I could blame it on a faulty app or something simple but I put it to sleep and when I woke it 20 minutes later, I can't do anything with it. It responds to all the physical buttons just fine and the screen rotates and everything but it just doesn't respond to any touch.

I just installed Fruit Ninja HD. Although I am a newbie in cutting fruits, I am pretty sure the touch screen just doesn't register sometimes, even in Fruit Ninja.
My firmware build number is: HRI66.US_epad-8.2.3.9-20110423
Coming from Xoom, although the TF's IPS is much better than Xoom, but the touch experience of the TF is much much worse.
Sometimes you have to press hard and longer to register, I am wondering if there is a way to change the touch screen's sensitivity?
Whatever reason it is, it should be very easy for ASUS to reproduce the problem and fix it!
Try the app Multitouch Test in the market. It seems to be a lot more sensitive than some of the other apps are (or even the OS) regarding touch sensitivity. (Or at least it seems to be)

Thanks. Downloaded and tried.
When it's normal, it can track 10-finger touch easily. However, the main problem seems to be the response time for repetitive touches. The system seems to be not able to keep up with normal typing speed touches. It will register several touches, then non-responsive for a while. If you wait a while, like several seconds, it will respond again.
Is there a good APP to check CPU settings and utilization ratio?

What do you mean by cold reboot? I have reset it a few times by holding down the power button.
Interestingly, this thing is mentioned in Engadget UK's review (http://hartantolestari.info/search/asus-eee-pad-transformer-screen-is-not-working)
A lack of responsiveness is also evident throughout the Android UI. Aside from a delay in activating the function you’ve selected, there are also troubling instances where input isn’t registered at all. That leaves the user with no less than three potential scenarios when she doesn’t see an immediate response — she could be looking at lag, an unregistered tap because of software, or an unregistered tap because the physical input was too light. Such uncertainty doesn’t build a great user experience and the Transformer, unfortunately, doesn’t offer a great user experience. Much of that is, regrettably, down to Honeycomb itself. It’s not a finished product yet. It’s actually a fair distance away from a finished product. Some apps are done to absolute perfection while a lot of the “glue” bits, the stuff that goes between the apps and basically makes up the OS, is either confused, not responsive enough, or broken in some other way. Let’s take these things in turn, starting with the good parts.

I would reccomend against pressing hard. That is a good way to damage the lcd panel and the digitizer hardware. Capacitive screens dont register pressure just electircal conductivity from skin touching the screen. I would say any lag you are seeing is most likely software based as others have said.

Hmm, I have tried rebooting the device many, many times and still no change. I wiped user data hoping it would help (nope). I just don't understand why the touchscreen would stop being responsive to any input. It wasn't jostled around or treated badly in any way. I just had it in my backpack, which I was carrying by hand and the Transformer was in a padded compartment.
Overall, I am rather disappointed and disillusioned with Asus. The Transformer's terrific when it works but I've had to deal with the deep sleep issue at least once a day and then to have the touchscreen go dead entirely is terrible. The first I can see being a software issue that can be fixed but the second is probably shoddy hardware.

almost seems as if they didnt test the xoom. it feels faster than the tf bc its screen is more responsive.
i wonder if the screen could be calibrated manually with the config.ini lie the nook color.
Here is some update: after the TF slept for a night, I pushed the power button. The touch screen is just not responding at all on the lock screen. I let alone the TF for half an hour or so, pushed the power button again, now the touch screen worked fine. Unlocked and into the home screen, no problem with touch for about 30 seconds, then it becomes intermittent again.
I will call ASUS support tomorrow. Hopefully there will be some firmware update very soon to address this, otherwise, I will have to return it.
The weird thing is that if this is a software/firmware issue, lots of people should have reported it.
OK, I have created a case at vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx
Looking at some Youtube clips reviewing TF, their touch screen seems to be fine. So this might be a bad unit. I will return it next week (bought from local Fry's) and hopefully they have replacement units!
I have created a vote regarding the TF's touch experience.

Good luck! I got mine from Amazon and they are completely out of stock. The only option is to get a refund since they don't have an expected in-stock date so the CSR can't put a replacement order in for me. Every online retailer I've looked at is also OOS. Hopefully more come in soon.
I also spoke to Asus and they are willing to repair mine but not to give me a loaner or just outright replace it. That is really too bad. I was hoping they would be more like HTC, which has great customer service in my experience and gives out replacements at the drop of a hat. If the Flyer wasn't such a POS, they would have had my business.

[Q] Speaker no longer work, dead?

Hello,
I am not sure why but I been using my ASUS transformer 16gb for about a week and a half perfectly.
It is not ROOTED nor ever dropped. Well taken care of just like all of my other electronics.
Yesterday was the FIRST time I ever plug in my headphones to the jack to listen to music. After i was done, I removed it and tried my speakers on youtube + music
and the FIRST second would work then it just hear a pop on speaker and a flat mute. No more clicking on menu or lock + unlock sounds.
I have tried a factory reset, hard reset, soft reset
all will have temporary fix where the unlock + lock sound works but until
i play a youtube, music, or movie it basically stops again.
I have contact ASUS regarding this issue and there are no modifications on my transformer and using the LATEST FIRMWARE.
I think it might be a hardware issue or update on the firmware
but basically I am getting it RMA.
Luckily I have an extra 16GB brand new I was going to sell but I guess i am just going to keep it now until I get the old one return.
Sucks that I have to pay for shipping compare to other companies who pays you a prepaid label or a box. I understand this is the FIRST transformer revision and hopefully it isn't a defect on all transformer.
Does anyone know a fix or have the same issue?
Did you try shutting down and holding power button for 10 seconds?

I had the same issue. One speaker completely died and I had to return it
yep. tried a hard reset (holding for 10-15 seconds)
Guessing its a hardware defect.
Mine lasted five days untill left speaker popped then died just waiting for a new one to be delivered
did you RMA? how long is it taking

yep =/ i know its going to be a long time.
Do anyone know if ASUS sends a new one or do they actually just try to fix it?
If its a speaker problem.
Mine is off to the service center because both speakers are dead. I'm going to get then to look at my screen as well, since I'm having light bleed issues as well. Until then, I'm using an Acer a500, which has problems of it's own, but mostly software issues... the hardware seems very good.

[Q] What problems still exist after update?

It appears that both LG and T-mobile are putting a LOT on the hope that this update has indeed fixed all of the problems plagued with the G2X. But to be honest with you, I only notice 2 differences with the update...gps and data speed.
Problems I'm still having:
Random reboots
Lock-ups when switching from USB storage on to off
Sleep of death (try to wake the screen with the power button, and you can see some kind of slight light behind the black screen, but requires a battery pull)
Camera is dark, dark, dark
MP3 Ringtone at max volume when call is coming in is distorted
I will edit this if I think of more, but I have to go handle some business en el bano.
Please reply if you are having these issues, not having these issues, or if you have other issues.

I really HATE the new buttons on the keyboard...as well as the fact that double hitting spacebar no longer equals a period. I know they're petty, but they annoy the f*** out of me.

My problems got worse. GPS won't lock on now, and when it does, it's like 30 miles off.
Getting more freezes and reboots.
Finally decided to try a warranty replacement!
The update fixxed all the reboot problems for me, however my GPS still takes forever to get a fix, and once when checking for a text message i was expecting, i would turn the screen on and off every 15 seconds or so for about 2 minutes, which eventually led to the screen getting stuck. Everything seemed to work (slight vibrate when using the unlock slider, able to feel buttons being touched through the vibration), just the screen was frozen. Weird bug, was fixxed with a battery pull and a restart though.
for those wanting the lg camera app on gingerbread, couldnt you just make a backup of the application with titanium backup and restore? Or is it not compatible on gingerbread?

I have the following issues:
1. Phone turned off while charging overnight
2. During calls, it cuts in and out almost constantly (or every several seconds)
3. Battery life hit the crapper (due to Juicedefender not turning off radio and bloatware present again since I'm not rooted anymore)
I haven't gotten any reboots or lockups, yet
Wifi is pretty solid now
Somewhat better performance, although it lags a bit when woken up

Just got the OTA this morning and I've noticed much faster GPS lock and vastly improved call quality (no more drop outs!). Only been a few hours though so this is just my initial impressions. Would love it if the battery life improves but I'll have to wait and see.

My Quadrant speeds are the same as before... Around 2800.
I've had several random reboots today and only had maybe 4 over the last 3 months with Froyo. Trying out some different ROMs, xboarders tweaked, to see if that corrects some of the problem.

Haptic feedback suddenly stopped working

Just noticed it. No idea why. I turned the tablet off/on a couple of times but that didn't do anything. Any ideas?
The motor might be dead. Have you tried toggling it under sound?
The 700 I got from Best Buy, a C7, haptic was dead out of the box. Had to take it back.
Factory reset didn't fix it either. I'm hesitant to exchange it because I don't have any of the other issues people are complaining about with this one but might with another. What a pain in the ass.
Does it vibrate when you power on or off? It should at least do that, if it does, its working. If you don't feel anything its toast.
Makes me mad too cause the one I had, everything was great except haptic. I didn't want to wait for another one so just took the refund

Yeah, it vibrates when turning on/off. The tablet has been set to 'vibrate on touch' since day 1. Mysteriously that doesn't seem to work anymore.
after seeing this thread i just checked mine out. The haptic feedback is really really weak. I cant really feel it unless i am paying really close attention. On my prime it is noticeable, for sure.
I powered down and back up as suggested and got the standard 1/2 second buzz associated with those actions.
Maybe something in the update neutered the feedback? Is anyone's really pronounced?

Mine was totally fine, pre and post update, until I think late yesterday? The only thing I can think of, and I really hope this has ZERO to do with my issue, is that I had left my stylus laying across the screen for a short period of time. I think while it was resting on the screen it was registering touches repeatedly and maybe this screwed up the feedback mechanism? I know it was registering because the webpage that was showing was zooming in and out frenetically until I picked the stylus back up.

IMO this tablet is considerably more hefty than the prime. I think its because of the form factor that doesn't transit vibrations as well.

I'm just going to live with the broken haptic feedback. None in stock locally to make an exchange, and I really don't want to go thru the rigamarole of shipping it back, waiting who knows how long for a replacement, and then possibly getting one with other issues.
I got no haptic feedback at all since I got the Infinity. There's no screen locking sound either. I guess there should be one anyway?! The settings for these aren't affecting to anything at all.

i messed with mine all day. i am on the fence about sending it back (though prob not). it transmits a decent amount of feedback every 2-3 times, then 1-2 time where it is barely noticeable. I did the same set of testing with the prime...it too has a weak signal every 2nd or 3rd time, but it is still stronger than "regular" on my infinity.
I am going to see what others say, but i might have to agree with you on the transmission of vibration. If i hold it up to my ear, its definitely trying to do something...just not communicating it well.
Where is this "vibrate on touch" option? I can't find it anywhere. Are you talking about "Vibrate on keypress" for the Android keyboard? As long as you get buzz during the turning off and on, you at least have it functional.

Hmmm. I don't get any feedback from that. Messed with some widgets and icons - nothing. Maybe its one of those things that didn't get checked by QC?
Ooookk...after reading this thread went to check my. Also no haptic feedback even if I check it from the settings...this is strange.
I never noticed haptic feedback.
After reading this thread I checked all the settings and I didn't get anything.
Except the one when you switch it off....
I'm using swiftkey.
So I checked the settings there.
It was activated but no haptic feedback.
But in swiftkey you can change the duration as well.
I set it to 60 and now I get haptic feedback.
So the hardware seems to be OK in my case.
I was getting decent haptic feedback when typing, backspacing, hitting the home key, arrow key, home screen, whatever, before it stopped working. I also tested out swiftkey from the app store and was able to turn up the haptic feedback setting when typing, but still nothing from screen touches etc. This has to be a hardware issue, right? Then again, why would this function work, then stop working, but then sort of work (at least on the keyboard side) when using another app?
I made an assumption that this problem manifested when I left my stylus on the screen causing the screen to bug out as if it were be touched rapidly and repeatedly. Because store exchanges are impossible at this time and I'm ~1.5 weeks from my 30 day return window I decided to order another one, and then set up an RMA for this one to go back and be credited; assuming that my replacement doesn't have any other issues. I couldn't justify letting this go considering the cost of this thing and the fact I've only had it a couple of weeks.
How about the screen locking sound? Should there be one?
Actually there is a very very faint audio feedback for touch that I'm able to hear with headphones in a totally quiet place. It disappears when unchecking the setting.

If you change the duration of the regular Android Keyboard under its "Advanced Settings" you can get the vibrate on keypress to work. The duration is initially set too short for the vibrate mechanism to fully buzz. I changed it from 1 ms to 100 ms and I get definite (but not powerful) jiggle.

I just checked all of the boxes under the sound feedbacks. I can get some haptic from the back and home buttons but still nothing for widgets and such. Can't really notice any sounds from those though. Perhaps an update lowered the values for the feedback and that's why your initial problem happened? Dunno.

The problem didn't start happening until 2 days ago. The update has nothing to do with it. The last fix I tried to do was a 'cold boot'. I can't get that to work and yes, I followed the instructions posted on another forum and in YouTube videos. I hold down power and volume simultaneousy for up to a minute and nothing happens, other than locking it up and I have to stick a paper clip to reset it.

Haptic Buttons

Reviews are really bad with the sensitivity of the haptic buttons for volume control and on/off. Some people have said an update with better accuracy is required. This is a deal breaker for me and I have owned almost every phone since HTC started. Currently I own the u11+. Please give you reviews here after you have spent some time with the phone and possibly tweaked any possible settings to make your experience better. Thank you.
No issues for me. They seem to work as expected, though I rarely use the buttons. I am failing to understand why the reviewers are making such a big deal of this. Mkbhd's review seems spot on to me...
I'm playing around since a week with my U12. Can't find a sensitivity of the buttons that fits my needs...
My index finger touches the On/off button every second time I use the phone...don't know why they installed the button so deep...(or my hand is to big )
When I'm in the YouTube App or PubG in Landscape mode, the volume and power buttons doesn't work...
I'm a realy fan of HTC and owned all HTC flagships since the diamond...but that buttons drives me crazy!!!
Hope for an update
So far, I have no issues with the buttons. I went into it know that they weren't real buttons and didn't expect them to act as such.
No issues with the buttons for me either.
Here also no issues.
Grtz
Everything working as expected on my end as well. No issues at all.

I have just one issue with them, that sometimes they react if I touch the phone without even touching the buttons. For example I grab my phone (on the lower part) and suddenly my volume is all the way down.
Also if you have edge sense enabled, and you just pick up the phone you sometimes have the blue dots (to indicate that you're "pressing" the phone) visible - without actually pressing it. The dots go away shortly after you do something on the phone .... as if they calibrate itself or sth.
I have u12 plus for 12 days. For my use the haptics buttons are a real disgusting. In particular the power button. An involuntary light pressure is enough to turn off the display. Really unnerving. Every day makes me curse this thing. I'm waiting for an update, if htc does not fix these buttons, I'll sell the phone absolutely. Unfortunately, if htc fails it will only be because of him and of these useless experiments.

I have the same issue with my buttons, I'll be holding the phone below the power button and it will trigger the screen on or off. Also I noticed sometimes depending how i'm holding the phone I can't get the power button to react. This is my biggest complaint about the phone other than the software being the exact same since the HTC 10.
I don't have any issues with these buttons. Everything works fine for me. I'm already used to it after playing with the device for 3 hours.

Today i've received mine U12+ and I don't really understand why reviews complain about those buttons. They are fine really, when I press I fell haptic feedback. They are neither too easy or too hard to press, for me they are fine =)
I STILL have no issues with the buttons. I don't really use the power button to turn the screen on. I use the fingerprint sensor or a swipe. Volume button works great for me.
I've bumped the power button while using the phone, sure. Not exactly an issue to rage over for me.
My only confusion is that the button presses feel like a linear actuator (Taptic Engine), but the rest of the system's haptic feed back feels like a normal spinning weighted motor.
Hi, i have also Problems with the volume Buttons. They working like charme. But they dont working right in landscape Mode if there is any contact with my Fingers/hand on the display. I think the Buttons are being ignored if the "3 Finger gestures" is on limit.. Can anyone proof this?

Just tried to go in landscape mode, put my thumb on the screen and tried to change the volume buttons up/down and turn the screen off with power button. The buttons didn't recognise the presstouch here either. Don't think that's a problem though, but build in to the software.
Update; wait the do work over here!

Nearly every review before the phone was released: The buttons are horrible! Don't buy! Don't buy! The buttons stink! Why did they change them?! They're horrible! This is stupid! Don't buy!!
Nearly everyone who owns the U12+: What the *$% was the fuss about? The buttons work fine! Took me a few hours to get used to it, but I've got no real problems! They work just like regular buttons! Don't "not buy" just because you're afraid the buttons suck!
I mean ... do you think the initial//review devices were REALLY that bad and there was this huuuuuge improvement before the device was released to the public, or people just don't like change, or do they just have ulterior motives?
I get it's an $800 flagship with no headphone jack and rear glass with no wireless charging (but QC4!), but this phone has been EVERYTHING I was hoping it would be -- premium device with no notch, above-average speakers, IP68, sd card, snappy fingerprint scanner, bootloader unlockable and killer cameras. No buyers remorse here!
Well, I really don't get why reviewers are so mad about those buttons. If you wanted this phone because it's a complete package (well... almost, no Qi charging), don't let the button "problem" (at least for reviewers) drive you away. It's a great phone and my only grief is the lack of 3,5mm jack but I knew that it won't be here....
Btw
Usonics are really good
I have the U12+ now for 2 weeks and got used to the buttons. I mean, yes they could be a bit more responsive and i think HTC will fix that with an Update. If not, i am sure someone on XDA will. I really dont understand the bad reviews. No Notch, for real? Like it would make a phone that much better. No 3,5mm? Nothing special these days, get used to it. My battery on averange usage is great. I do watch Netflix, use Whatsapp, listen to Spotify and take here and there some pictures. I get 1,5 - 2 days battery. I am not a huge HTC fanboy but also cant denide that i really like what they did with the HTC 10 and M7. Its something new, wasnt there before and it doesnt mean its that bad, just give it some time to get used to it. Hope they fix some small issues with Android P Update. I would like to set the sensitivity for the buttons in the settings.
Sorry for my english
Everything works well here. Buttons and even the double tap for one hand operation no problem.
