Good to see Android winning i love it.
My request to the manufacturers is to concentrate on a higher capacity for the battery which they are providing with the phone.
And a proper case like a flip one would be better. Some countries they sell only mobiles not the accessories. We dont mind paying a little extra for that if you include it in the package.
Suggestion to Google:I am not a software developer i dont know if you are doing this but as a user i would like to upgrade my android os version along with you when you release it i hate waiting for the manufacturers to realease an update.
Android by default has an UI right give the option for the end user to choose if they want to go with the default Android UI or wait for their device manufacturer to realease an update.
Example like Windows OS can run on any branded pc/laptop or an assembled desktop and for the drivers people can go to their manufacturers website and download it.
Also Google please release the minimum hardware requirements corresponding to the version of Android.
I appreciate google for its continuos effort in fixing/upgrading the android versions we end users also want to enjoy the newer versions.
Example HTC Desire was released last year and better specs than Nexus 1 and Ginger bread was released in December 2010 i guess till date more than 5 months i am waiting for Gingerbread from HTC or i have to choose a Mod which the XDA developers are working hard in porting it and fixing issues.
Please Google dont let the end users behind.Google and the android phone manufacturers remember you are nothing without the End buyers.
You satisfy us we will buy your products. Also manufacturers concentrate on middle east because these are the oil rich countries we have enough money to buy any damn smart phone/Tablet what ever price it is.
I sold my HTC Desire just because i hated waiting for updates i will buy my next Android phone only if i get a minimum of 2400 mah battery as a default from the manufacturer and a direct android os UI / manufacturer UI option other wise i will not buy it.I have the money to buy any android phone/tablet out there today but i will not buy it.

get the nexus it is the only phone that gets all the updates because essentially it is a developers phone.
Then you can root and then get a kernel that is undervolt and you will get all the battery life you ever desired.
I hear ya. The 4g and the Thunderbolt don't mix very well.
The 'HTC Thunderbolt aka Mecha' and 'HTC Evo 'Lightspeed' are the same phone except antenna, the Thunderbolt suffers from the same issue as the ADR-6200 HTC Incredible, the battery is under sized for the phone thus you get about 6 hours max usage anything above that is luck and or careful management of battery usage. It is a well known issue with both phones.
As far as Android OS in general 'background data' and various accounts syncing are the biggest issues I think in regards to battery. It can do so much but, it will drain battery. It's a fair trade off Android does so much more which makes sense it would suck the life out of any battery. Think of a laptop, it gets maybe 2 hours max on a single charge.
Instead of more processor power and RAM, I wish they'd work on hardware acceleration and battery power.
Yeah I agree battery technology should be really worked on, I would love to be able to get a week out of my battery before charge!!

I agree it sucks sometimes that the battery just drains soooo fast.
You can obviously try an SD Card adapter, but do you have the necessary drivers for your device.?

Calkulin's ROM completely screwed my Evo. ive been working non-stop for almost 2 months trying to get it back to normal. At first, it killed my recieving of calls and texts. I fixed that, and now it will only charge when turned off, it has a terrible battery life (like 2 hours) and it wont recognize my SD card....My advice..Calkulin, either fix the the problems with the ROM or, Evo users, DO NOT DOWNLOAD this ROM. its caused me nothing but problems.
If the manufactures would divert some of the money they are spending on the processers and other things in our phones to battery technology we wouldn't be asking for this, its sad we have to.
Battery tech is what we need to better save the whole world!
They need better battery batteries, out of thinnner batteries, if that made any sense. So they can make phones super thin.

Is it worth it over the htc desire, dell streak and the nexus one?
I need a phone that support umts 1900 mhz and I'm deciding between those at the moment.
For the moment I'm inclining myself more to the d2g for the faster cpu, but in close second is the nexus one just for the better updates.
Well spec wise the d2g is the best of the bunch. Are you in the US? If you are, chances are you won't be able to use this with gsm technology, its locked from US carriers, but you can use it with international gsm carriers.
Sent from my WICKED FAST Droid 2 Global with fission using XDA app
No I'll be using outside the US. I know is block to US carriers. The only thing concerning me about this phone is some of the complains I have seen about the battery life and some heat issues.
The phone can last you a day and then some with moderate use, my d2g never gets hotter than 100F, or 35C
Sent from my WICKED FAST Droid 2 Global with fission using XDA app
After reading a lot on the heating issues. It looks like the problem is when you are using 3g data that heats the cellphone.
I'm deciding between this and the nexus one.
Haha, I'm always on 3g and I'm always in the range I specified, I guess some people might think that's too hot, but I guess they've never used an amd laptop
Sent from my WICKED FAST Droid 2 Global with fission using XDA app
lol maybe.
I have seen some pretty scary temps, some guy even got 118 f. It looks like the problem is software relate it. Maybe you don't have the problem because you have root and you are using fission.
I use my D2G in GSM/UMTS mode only outside US. The highest temperature I've seen reported in logs is 41 deg C. Battery lasts between 8 hours (heavy use), 12 hours (moderate-light use) and 20+ hours very light use. Under moderate use I mean normal activity with screen on for aprox 2.5 hours. These numbers I get since the recent OTA update. Before that - about 15-20% lower numbers. Update increased battery life.
I would be worried.. I was one of the persons who reported the heat issue and battery life. Here is the thread:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/293031
I switched to the DX and I can safely say it doesn't get as hot after 1hr of 3G data..the D2G would reach 104F in 10mins after just streaming a online radio at 128kbps ..all my findings are in the thread above. Just read through it and make your decision. It's a great phone though, I just had minor problems.
Nexus is a year old. It wouldn't be a step in the right direction. D2G is great and will exceed your expectations.
Heat/battery life/etc. are all user-specific symptoms. You'll experience things based on how you use your phone.
Expect a 1.2Ghz chip to get warm. There's not a heatsink or fan in there!
nexus one overclocked to 200mhz doesnt get so warm...oh well I suggest a Nexus S if you gonna sign that dotted line.
my d2g lasts me all day with ease, and ive never seen the temp above 37C, usually right at 35C

So besides the overheating issues some have seen, is there anything else wrong with this phone. I'm thinking of switching over from a HTC Droid Incredible.
I've been having too many issues with the Incredible that I want off of it. And this phone looks to be the best Android phone on Verizon with a keyboard that I have seen.
Well, there are few issues that D2g has that you must be aware of before taking the plunge:
1. Exchange push email is broken. Motorola is working on fix, but its been quite a while (months) and still not fixed;
2. Battery life is not great. Be prepared to recharge mid day if you are heavy user. Or buy ext.battery which partially addresses this issue.
3. MP3 playback suffers popping and skipping. Issue is still not recognized by Motorola. There is still no good and free workaround for this;
4. Phone doesn't really perform great in UMTS mode, even update Motorola issued mid December breaks it even more.
Sorry if this sound discouraging but I believe everyone should be aware of these facts before making purchasing decision.

I've never noticed #1 and 3 on my d2g, maybe its just the stock music player that does this, im using the connected media player made by motorola and I absolutely love it, I use it to play music when im at the gym. I also use push mail for my .edu address no problem.
The battery life improved with motorola's update, that and using set cpu and droid overclock to underclock and undervolt, you can get a lot of battery life out of this thing, I get a little over 3 days on one charge, and I have 2 batteries so that's almost a week I can go with no charging. I hate the fact that signal strength sucks in gsm mode, I don't know if motorola can fix it, might be a hardware issue.

1 - push email works unreliably. Sometimes it works, others- phone can go for hours without receiving email unless manually refresh. Email poll works fine, it is PUSH that's broken. There are plenty of discussion about this especially on Motorola's official forum.
3. It is the built in player that sucks. PowerAMP from market does not have issue, but costs money.
Update 2.4.330 does not really do anything good for battery life. At least I haven't noticed difference. It surely breaks GSM support, at least in my case - using Unlocked on Rogers Canada.

I've had an iPhone 3g and I've had a g1, mytouch 3g, Samsung vibrant, mytouch 4g, and now a g2x and no matter what I do my battery life is no comparison to what I got on my iPhone I could play fieldrunners all day and still not need to charge, right now I'm using faux newest oc UV kernel, juicedefender ultimate, set CPU w profiles, background data & auto sync off, no led touch buttons, I also lowered the screen brightness to 0% while inside and 25% if I need it outside, I also lowered the capacitive buttons brightness to the lowest level before they do not light up, what else do I need to do to get my battery on par with the iPhone, other than that apple can suck it.

good luck. ithink the main culprit is that your iphone 3g doesnt multitask asnd therefore doesnt continue to have apps constantly running in the background...i could be wrong though
I was going to say....because it can only do one thing at a time. It is dumbed down and not as powerful.
The iPhone 4 is a lot better on battery as well, me and my buddy went fishing and charged our phones before we left and were playing games, calls and text... I was at 50% after 6 hours and he was at 72% and made more calls then me. My guess is the dual core using a lot of battery especially in heavy graphic games. I'm okay with it since well android is better IMO, and his lol. He wished he could do what I can with android...
Yes I was saying that my iPhone 3g was good on battery the 4 could only be better so the gap between battery life is even greater, I'm just saying we got a top of the line dual core beast, but we have to carry the charger around.

I never understood why so many people complained about the battery life on Android phones. I have had 3 Android phones including my current G2X. I went from the G1 > Nexus One > G2X. The G1 was good for a short time. It was cool being the first Android phone. Loved it at first, hated it eventually after it got real sluggish and slow. The Nexus was a ****ing beast and never got slow or sluggish. I kinda wish I kept it, but it's ok. The G2X is a better phone.
As far as the battery life though, i've had nothing but good experience with battery life for the most part with my Android phones. I think the worst was the G1 at times. My Nexus One had great battery life. My G2X has good/great battery life. I think if you're using it a lot throughout the day, it's bound to die down. It IS a battery, no? The only time my battery has drained is when I used it a real lot. Connecting to Wi-Fi and viewing websites, videos, music, games etc.
Other than that, the battery is fine when I don't do all that. There has been a few times here and there where the battery seemed to die quick when I haven't done much, but it hasn't happened many times at all. Not enough for me to get angry about it.
My battery is at 61% right now and it has been off the charger for 13 hours. I haven't used it a real lot today, just here and there during work. Browsing some websites and stuff like that. That's more then good enough for me.

The Sensation is the first Android phone I have used that can last all day on a single charge. That's with normal all-day use. Every other Android phone I have used has been dead by 2pm or earlier.
The last iPhone I owned was an unlocked 3gs. It barely made it past 3pm or so before dying. At least with that phone I had a Mophie Juice Pack Air (external battery case) whereas with the G2x and other Android devices I was usually left waiting while it charged.
I do not think manufacturers concern themselves with battery usage for most devices. Android itself isn't all that bad. When left disconnected from any network it lasts as long as devices with different operating systems. It is as though applications access the Internet too often, unnecessarily so, causing battery depletion both in use and not.

I think that it has a lot to do with iOS's closed system.
Why? Because it does more, so you use it more. The real key to good battery life is the apps and widgets you use.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Despite all its flaws, Apple does use very good hardware. As in some of the best in the entire world.
Battery life is higher because it really isn't doing anything past what you are currently doing that present time. It doesn't do background data nor true multitasking. Simply put, if you turn off all your background data on your phone and didn't multitask, you'd see a tremendous increase in battery life. I've turned off background data for a day once just as an experiment and you'd be surprised how much that can increase your battery life. The thing is, it also makes the phone a lot less useful. For me, my Sensation makes it through a day with heavy use pretty well and on a gingerbread rom my g2x lasts a day. I don't need my phone to last me more than a day as I charge it every night. Sure I'd always like more battery life, but not at the cost of functionality (like the iphone).
first time I've seen a pic of an iPhone battery
IPhone sucks period.

well, Android is known of bad battery life. However, it is not so bad. I can get 15 hours+ out of my G2x on average. The battery comparison also varied on what size of battery you have in the phone and how often you used of the phone. So there is not a really fair comparison around. It's will be based on user preference. If you liked iOS, then use iPhone, if you like Android, then use Android phones.
Looks like there isn't a thread on this yet, and now that I, and many others, have the OTA up and running, I thought it would be good to compare notes.
I don't have anything meaningful to say right now as I've been too busy playing with the new rom to note when I installed, what percentage the battery was at when I did so, and so on.
However, I've had a nexus s for a long time and I am a serial rom flasher, and you get an impression pretty quick of how quick the battery is going down - I'm sure you all know what I am saying.
Seems to me that my battery is going down quick. I won't know for sure until I actually go to work on Monday. Then I will wake up in the morning with 100% charge and all will become clear as the day goes on.
But the rest of you must be getting some impression of battery life by now - so what do you think??
ps - Liking this rom. All desire to buy a galaxy nexus has evaporated for the moment, which is really good as that is one expensive phone
It's not great. Seems like Mediaserver is the biggest culprit for my drain. Even though I dont listen to music for long periods of time. Seems like maybe it's got a runaway process or something.
It's hard to say at this point, though.
I reckon my battery is going down really fast. was going to vote - but just discovered you can't vote on your own poll. What a pisser

No, it's been confirmed on other phones too. Even Galaxy Nexus users are experiencing it. The problem seems to lie in something that's not letting the phone sleep. If you break down the usage of Android OS, "Keep Awake" runs for WAY too long, which keeps the phone constantly awake and draining battery.

Yeah, I just noticed something, that might be relevant. Went into wi-fi settings. Options have changed a bit and so has default setting.
New options are like this................
Question asked is, "Keep wi-fi on during sleep".
On GB the default answer would have been no - only have wi-fi on when screen is on.
The other options are to have wi-fi on, "only when plugged in", or "never".
Mine was set to "always". First time I had been into this menu so looks like that is default, and that has got to burn the battery up. I've now set it to, "only when plugged in".
So, will see what difference it makes, and post back.

I thought this thread what asking the battery life from GB to ICS.
How can Galaxy Nexus users judge if their battery life is worse? Worse compared to what? They only had ICS to begin with.
Frankly, I've been using the ICS Alpha's for about two weeks and now been using the official OTA ROM for a few hours and it has been the same battery drain.
I have no opinion on ICS vs GB battery drain if that what this thread is asking.

Actually, I've read that WiFi uses much less power than a cellular network - because of the shorter range. So if you're constantly using background data, having WiFi enabled can actually make the battery last longer.
So far, 'Android OS' is winning handily at destroying my battery:

I'll keep an eye on it and see if it continues.

i think what you guys are seeing is just the good old "new device effect" all over again
if you haven't notice everyone with a new phone always complain about battery problem
that's because it's so sweet you can't put it down, and you are constantly using it
since the screen eats up the more juice, you can hardly refill it fast enough
it just the only difference in this case we don't have a new hardware but we do have a new OS, which makes it all sweet brand new renewed all over again

I would be very interested to see if google roll out a future update to maybe throttle back android os's use of battery because it is either a bug in ICS or else they have just lumped more processes under the android os title in the battery menu and that's why it is so high.
I can confirm 'Android OS' has mostly more battery usage than sleep mode isnce ICS (ported versions or that one day OTA). Anyway i didn't use my phone today cuz i have left it home. But what can you say after one day.

Now I'm coming from a well used note 1, the note 2 may well have been a lot better, but this is very impressive. I listened to Spotify for two hours, set up Gmail and exchange push email, messed around with it a lot during the day and I still have 44%.
I was thinking of getting the wireless charging back but don't think I'll bother if it is easily going to last a day with heavy use!

Impressive. #1 in my opinion is battery life. Wireless charging is just too cool and convenient to not use though. You do it everyday, mind as well save yourself a few seconds a day, it adds up!
Indeed, I am still tempted although I think I'll wait to see how thick the official wireless back cover is.
I've been using my device all day and connected to my Galaxy Gear and at end of the day battery still has 50% charge left. Very impressive.

To judge battery life accurately, you have to include a number of variables on your device's configuration
-How much screen on time(note 2 gets 5-7 hours rooted and rom'ed)
-Auto brightness or what percent brightness?
-How much time on LTE and how much on WiFi? weak or strong data signal?(red yellow or green in battery stats)
-WiFi and/or Bluetooth and/or GPS on or off when connected to LTE?
-How many reboots since last charged?
-How much data transferred through the radio?
-How many minutes of voice calls?
-Samsung power savings mode enabled or disabled?
-SPen finder on or off?
I might be exaggerating but I think that the above counts when you have thousands of people posting various findings with vague information

My comparison is against my other devices. My Note 2 would need a charge at the end of the day so for me the Note 3 has better battery life.

You don't even have signal. This is all based on WiFi. You should do it with data.

Nope. I just got home where I have bad signal. I have been in London all day with full signal and wifi.
Just some general impressions compared to my old note 1.
You guys are getting too particular. First impressions.

Actually they're not. It's like getting a new car with almost the same engine and transmission and just saying it's faster. How about some times to show how much faster.
Poster above said his Note 2 would already need a charge and he still has 50% battery left. Either his Note 2 battery was faulty or he has misjudged his usage on his new device. The 3 will have better battery life than the 2, but not double. Congrats to all the lucky ones that have it already!
Don't forget that it's new more efficient processor and Android 4.3 in note 3 in comparison note 2 and i logically assume that overall must be more energy efficient phone. I also believe that if it wasn't sammy wouldn't had put only some miliamps better battery but a lot bigger maybe making a bit thicker.
Just my 2 cents

Who cares how accurate the first impressions are at this point, many of us pre-ordered one. We like developments and information, quit destroying our dreams.

Good point my Note 2 battery is not new. But the battery in the Note 3 holds more charge. Also Note 3 had BT4 which is very battery efficient.

Sure, old batteries may not be the best comparison, but new batteries aren't at the top of their game either. Lithium batteries generally need a few charge cycles to reach peak capacity. Maybe not scientific, but it's good to hear people are pleased with their initial results.
I believe it's been over six months since battery drain (and performance) is horrendous for my Mi Note 10. My current SOT is around 2 to 5 hours top. I am using xiaomi.eu MIUI 13.0.1 (stable) and I've been using their previous ROMs as well. I am fairly sure it's not the ROM issue - I've tried several custom ROMs and stock ones for some time, with no results. Battery shouldn't be an issue either - I've replaced it with a brand new one, as I thought that the original one could wore out. Overall performance is pretty bad, too. Most of the applications take several seconds to open, with Camera being the slowest one. Phone is rooted with Magisk, I am also using LSPosed. I am willing to provide any information I can - I am really tired of this situation and seriously thinking about switching phones. Picture related shows misery of my situtation.

I have looked at the battery usage and found out that for some time "Media server" and "media.extractor" have been literally eating my battery alive. Anyone have any idea what the hell are these things and how to get rid of them?

Hmm, if you says it was the same on custom ROMs, it doesn't seem like software issue... So maybe the replacement battery is faulty somehow? By the way, which custom ROMs did you try? I use Octavi and it's flying, may battery isn't fantastic too (AccuBattery shows me 76% health, around 4000 mAh real capacity), but I have this device about 2 years without changing the battery. Anyway, MIUI ROMs were always laggy on this device since it's a heavy skin and SoC isn't great

I've tried Octavi, Lineage, Cipher, Sakura and the stock one. I wasn't using most of them for a longer periods, but long enough to see no meaningful change. As of now, I believe that the problem is in the two system applicatons, "media.extractor" and "Media server", as shown in the screenshot above your post. They drain battery and have to be CPU-intensive - that would explain laggish performance and way higher-than-average temperatures of the phone I face for a few days.
Except for factory reset, I didn't find any real solutions for this issue, which kinda sucks. I'll look for a solution some more, then do factory reset and see if it changes everything.

I consulted with the Octavi dev and he does not known these two processes, so likely they're specfic for MIUI ROMs. So that would not explain your battery drain on custom ROMs... Of course, you can always do factory reset.
By the way, how long ago did you try custom ROMs? From the list you mention, Lineage and Sakura are deprecated for quite a time. So if you tried them long ago - in the days of Android 11 - now customs are much better. There are three still maintained customs (Octavi, Cipher nad Arrow), all based on Android 12, and much improved from the earlier versions. Still, the camera is the weaker part, but its definitely usable. Latest Octavi and Arrow even feature MIUI Camera port called ANX - some things are broken, but it works pretty well. I mention this in case you'd like to try customs again

I really appreciate your help, thank you :] t's been a long time since I extensively used custom ROM - Android 11 would check the box here. Few weeks ago, I've jumped to a Cipher for a short time, but stock Android 12 UI skin is not my cup of tea. Altough I'd rather have usable phone than prettier UI. I will probably do factory reset and if it doesn't help, I will try one of the custom ROMs for a longer time and see how it goes. Thanks again!

Great, feel free to ask if you need any assistance. Also much of the custom ROMs life is being going on the Telegram nowadays, so if you have an account, I can share links to you in pm to follow up the development more closely. Cheers
