What is the point of this?
The idea of this is to convince htc to unlock the bootloaders and disable the NAND protection on their phones
Why should I support this?
Unlocking the bootloader and disabling the NAND protection will allow users to keep their phones up to date using custom roms such as CM7. Take the htc wildfire for example. In december 2010, HTC released a 2.2 update for the wildfire. However, hidden in this update was a new bootloader which could not (and still can not as of the 15th may 2011) be modified. It is unlikely that HTC will release another update for this phone, meaning that users are going to be stuck on this rom. The reason? So HTC can sell new phones. However what this is doing is putting users off buying HTC's devices since rival companies have announced that the users can easily unlock the bootloaders on their devices.

we need way more attention to this topic...after 1.5 years with the motorola milestone I was waiting for a awesome htc device...although the sensation is inferior to the samsung galaxy s2, I would go for it..I would totally turn a blind eye on the fact that it has less ram, ridiculouse internal storage and its thickness..my only true concern was the bootloader..after the milestone I would never ever go for a device with a signed bootloader again..I would totally pass on guarantee just to have an open bootloader..
If I may interject. The point of a locked bootloader is not to sell more devices, it is to protect the intellectual property contained on said locked device from being dumped, IE full versions of otherwise payed programs that the OEM includes in their ROM(Swype etc.). If users are able to simply dump an image that contains these programs, they can then redistribute them as they see fit. Do not misread me, I am for unlocked bootloaders 100% and have used HTC devices for almost 5 years now. I just wanted to add my opinion that its not about you buying another device for an update, its about manufactures trying to protect themselves.

That's roughly €1000000/£877000/$1423000 in sold phones(when price in € is 500,which is lower than atleast here in Finland). That kind of money should have some effect?

But sadly, none of these currently have an ENG H-BOOT (as far as we know )
We need that.

I have the G2x right now and I keep considering the Sensation. The only thing that is stopping me is that the bootloader may be hard to crack. The devs have yet to do it for several devices and this may be the next. Will this stop you or are you still buying?

From what HTC leaks said, it will have a level of security like thunderbolt or incredible S.
If it's like thunderbolt it will be very easy to unlock, if it's like IS given the actual R&D of the devs...it ''may'' be unlocked once released if the IS method is working.
So it doesn't look like an impossible mission for our good devs
All the N1,Desire and DHD devs will work on it, very few are going towar the SGS2
Yes. It IS a deal-breaker for me. It was the only reason I didn't get the Incredible S two months ago.
So far it looks like the only way to unlock the Incredible S is with an XTC Clip and the last time I looked it was only working for some models.
Bin4ry may have made some headway on this but the last post I see from him with any new information on the matter was on the 26th of April when he said, "I said that i made progress YES, but i have not achieved anything."
TBH I've been having a terrible Android experience so far. Being on the Motorola Milestone, I still don' tknow what it's like to be on a fully free device... not to mention the 256mb RAM really CRIPPLES the entire experience of this phone.
So while the specs on these new phones are nice, I think I'd be getting a screwed up vision of Android once again if these phones never get unlocked. Somehow I had hoped Moto's bootloader would get cracked. Boy was I wrong.
The question is : why getting the risk ? there is plenty of unlocked bootloaders devices out there from LG and SE and even some better spec'd like the SGS2. LG and SE aren't very supported by devs but HTC and Samsung are the best supported one, so if a free bootloader is important for you and you don't even want to worry about dev support take an unlocked one
But for me it is not a dealbreaker as I'm getting both (SGS2 and Sensation), but for someone that will only pick one of the two you might have to think twice..

Still the kernel can't be changed. Keep in mind that a stable 2.2 rom wasn't possible until motorola released beta's of that rom. This due to the fact that the 2.2 rom didn't really want to work with the 2.1 kernel. Motorola isn't really great at writing kernels either.
I already know the next android version will probably won't work.

So it will be rootable and we can block ads, use apps requiring root, etc, just not load different ROMs?
Not overly concerned about custom Roms, but definitely want to be able to run some apps that require root.
If I am understanding this correctly my G2x is going back tonight.
I'm completely content to run a stock ROM if it's stable. I've never had occasion to root or put an alternative ROM on my Nexus One and all of my experiences with the HD2, G1, and Viewsonic G-Tablet ROMs have been mixed, Cyanogen or otherwise.
Definitely not a deal breaker.

Hey everyone, this is a petition to get HTC to give us Ice Cream Sandwich. As people have seen, HTC released this statement
After extensive testing, we’ve determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.
Now as anyone on XDA we know this is not true. This is really getting alot of us mad, and I thought it is about time we do something as a community. Now, the HTC Desire was suppose to get Gingerbread, but ended up not being able to handle Gingerbread with Sense on top of it, so because of that and the efforts of the community, HTC released an RUU on the HTCDev.com website for a pure Ginerbread update. Now if HTC is not going to bring an update for our phone, they can at lest bring a ICS RUU then. It at lest gives us Devs offical libs and kernel.
Now please people, can you please sign this petition, we need to show HTC that we care about this phone, and we want this update.

Signed. I would love to see this work. While I am still under contract and under a certain lack of funds to switch to the 'Pure Google' experience that is Nexus, I would like to see ICS or JB on a similar device so the glacier gets the proper drivers so we can all have a fully functional experience. Fun all around.

Only if you aren't rooted . All we need is an RUU and then we can get ROMs updated, and people can run the RUU to get it officially.

Unlikely. Yes their profits are falling quite severely but weren't they banking on the One series to "restore the faith" if you will? If this is the case the only way HTC can get customers to trust them again is to bring out updates on time, this way they reduce the negative reports about slow updates and are likely to attract more customers beased on their already good build quality etc.

Just do it we have nothing to loose now and HTC have every thing to loose.
This is not just about the one s but all there phones the more people that no there will be no updates on there phones the more people stop buying them , including there flagship phones.
I joined the group and liked the page. I think it makes it harder to defend android phones when we have this kind of lack of support and updates. At least for the average user who doesnt want to root.

Apparently Qualcomm isn't supporting HTC with needed drivers for the s3 models and in conclusion there's no update for either device... They even said that the current stock Rom is already perfectly optimized so there is no need for an update in the first place. What kind of twisted logic is that? The phone has 2 years warranty and one year passed and update support already ends? If they pull through with this, this is my last HTC phone..
