Um...i looked all over that whole thread but im not sure if you know what I mean. I dont want to know how to fix the the problem(although I did try to mount manually and still didnt get it to go through but thats besides the point) what I wanna know is what does the update.zip file contain/what does it do? Thanks

If I understand the responses given in the CWM thread...
Right now the way it works is that CWM isn't actually being installed, but instead is being activated though "applying" the update zip. It isn't ready to be fully installed on to the SGS4G due to some lingering problems with CWM mounting / unmounting the /system partition.
So RomManager isn't going to recognize it and you'll have to apply the update zip each time you want to get into CWM. Remember it's a Beta release, not full or final...
Ok alright so now moving on to the mounting problem I MANUALLY mounted cache and the other one but it still says cannot mount e:/cache. So when I go back to check it resets so its like as if I didnt mount them? Does anyone know anything bout that?

"same damn problem."
That's why you can't post in dev section. This in no way belongs in the dev section. Dev section is to post rom's, hack's and mod's. General is for questions and problems. They only do that so that you post a few times and learn what type of post's, to post in which section. It get's confusing, I know, but this saves a lot of wrong posts in the wrong sections. It saves the moderators the work of having to move them, and it saves you from being flamed... allot.
FYI this post is my post 11 so that I can post in the Dev section. I'm fairly new to mod-ing my phone, but I've been doing research and stuff and wanted to help someone understand something in the Dev section..but couldn't because I only had 10 posts...
Perhaps instead of just a General and Dev section, there could be a couple more sections...for Stock phones, or even a section for CWM and Stock ODEXED ROM and a section for Stock De-ODEXED ROM...maybe a testing section...Limite the Development thread to developers and then the devs an post things in the testing section to help get things tested...
I'm done ranting...I just needed my 11th post. All the work you guys do is great, but search forums has never been to friendly...it gets cluttered way to fast.. Just the nature of forums I guess.

My suggestion is to PM Krylon360 about this. I think he wont frequent this section as often because he moved onto another device already, BUT he and DrHonk are still working on CWM.

The data and cache partions are not automounted, this is intended. These errors are OK. Things still should work as expected. Only thing that dosn't work is flashing a full ROM.
Also the Beta1 of CWM dosn't actually "flash" at this point, you have to replace the recovory file first & then when you want to get into CWM, you select "Reinstall packages" from the stock recovory console.

Not sure if your still looking for an answer, but the update.zip is CWM and is activated by using option 2 in the default stock reboot screen. There really is no reason to mount the other drives unless you are trying to change something in them. This was really more when the whole Apps2SD was more of a back end thing and many apps provide this when you download them.

I rooted my Thunderbolt with no problems. But how do I flash Roms and Kernels?
For instance. I was in ROM Manager and i wanted a Kernel. I downloaded it and it said to start in Recovery. I come from a Fascinate. I am use to seeing a green screen. Instead, This phones boots to the white screen. The same screen I saw when rooting and had to push the PG05 file.
It always, only lets me check Boot loader, Where it then updates something and it takes a long time. So it updates and says Reboot. I restart and I am back to freaking stock and wants me to set up my phone for first use. This is really annoying. What am i doing wrong? I now have to root it all over again I feel like a dog chasing his tail.
Edit: Deleting my wrong advice. Oops.

You didn't flash the recovery. Open up ROM Manager and at the top click flash clockwork recovery and follow the prompts. You can't flash anything until you have a recovery.
Nothing fishy. I am honestly in need of help. As for posting in the wrong spot, I apologize. I do not usually post here, Just read.
I re rooted and flashed clockwork. I put a kernel on my sd card. Removed the PG05 file.
I then went back to ROm Manager and selected Reboot to recovery.
It took me to the white screen again. I push BOOTLOADER
And it flashes something quick. I read PG05 as it scrolls fast. But i took that off?
The Zip i placed on the card never tries to read.
So whats wrong? Why doesnt the Clockwork screen look like it did in past?
I am not pulling anything. I really can not figure this out.
I dont need your link mexiken, Thanks. Can i leave a couple for you?
I have searched. And searched. I cant get an answer, Which is why i post. Im sure you may need something someday from somewhere and hopefully snide comments come your way! BUD

Hi,
I need some help.
I rooted this morning, deleted some bloatware and downloaded titanium backup and backed up files.
Now my next step was to delete the recovery file with root manager but the app wont let me switch to R/W when I am in the bin folder and it will not let me delete the recovery file.
I think I was supposed to create a recovery file? But I did so on ROM Manager.

Why are you trying to delete it? If you are trying to get CWM you still need to install the modded 3e recovery and then rename the recovery you are trying to delete instead which is separate from the CWM download you do in Rom Manager, or at least I'm guessing that's what your trying to do...
IF that's the case you DEFF have some reading to do...BOOM...<--click it lol
Thanks bro
i see the light, im on the right track now.
LOL, wtf, I downloaded the zip recovery, unzipped and put it on the sd card.
I copy, then when trying to rename, it wont let me mount R/W
Okay... LOL.. it was the root explorer app. there was something wrong with it. I reinstalled and it works.

Big thanks for hooking up the link and big ups to the devs and creator of the link.
I had to find out what was the cause so I wont repeat. I went through a boot cycle. From the video, it said to just rename the recovery to .bak. I think that was the cause of the boot cycle. (Gotta follow steps!)
Thank god for the unbrick by GTG.
I will try again but I will delete the original recovery file.
Hey I admit, ima noob at rooting/flashing but we all got to start somewhere!
guys how do you remove the root when you dont want it?

If you used SuperOneClick there is definitely an "Unroot" option when open up the program. If you want something different, Gtg's Ultimate Unbrick will put your phone back to a completely stock state, EVEN if your phone is not bricked, don't let the name scare ya lol
yeah I used GTG UB, works great, itll be like if you just turned the phone on for the first time, i was very happy. lol

AT&T stock, sorry, didn't see you were rodgers. So from what I've seen there is no Odin back to complete stock for rodgers, also the link chrscap gave you will not work without modification, its meant for AT&T. The only link I know of for Rogers stock is HERE but it includes root. (look through that thread and see if "unroot" is discussed)
I do know you can manually remove root by first removing the Superuser App then the su binary.
Alright thanks for the direction.

you may need busybox for root explorer to remount the /system folder. download from the market. (you could always skip all this by flashing the comunity kernel in heimdall)
That's what I get when accessing the "advanced" part of CWM Touch 5.8.1.3 on my skyrocket(to wipe dalvik cache). I also got something similar during a nandroid backup.
What does this mean and why am I getting this message?
Something to do with your external sd card. Might want to Odin cwm again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
It's done this since I've had the phone.. part of me thinks it's because of all the weird partitioning i had to do when i was using this external card with my atrix and the lapdock.. trying to unlock the webtop and all that insanity. I've tried repartitioning but it doesn't do the job.. now what?
I don't think re-odining CWM will do it, I've been on 4 different CWMs since getting my skyrocket and they've all done this.
I'm also having trouble running sean's newest ICS rom(i went back to GB for a while, too many little bugs were driving me crazy) now. Phone won't boot with it installed. Could this be because the dalvik can't be wiped? where is the dalvik cache written to?
Have you tried using a different external SD card to see if it still gives you that error?
naw, i know i should. i will soon, i was just kind of looking to see if this was a common thing. just formatted the card and will try again. the issue never caused any problems until right now, i'm thinking it's part of the reason i can't boot the ROM. will try reflashing after formatting the external card, then if that doesn't work i'll try going back to the GB nandroid, if it still doesn't boot then i'll try the external card and get back.
You shouldn't need an external to boot the rom. Everything should be flashed from the internal. Just leave the external out, reflash everything, and boot up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
yeah i figured it couldn't really be the external causing the boot failure. but would not being able to properly wipe the dalvik cause it? because it returns the error when i go to wipe the dalvik. sorry, i'm like a half-noob... got all the terms and procedures down, but the under the hood stuff is still coming slowly lol
edit: no dice. just won't boot at all. going to ODIN cwm again as suggested and try that.
now things are getting really weird. after ODINing CWM, when i go to install from the external SD it just keeps going to my internal. both "internal" and "external" sd card options go to the internal. there's a subfolder for the external_sd as it would be in root explorer, but that just loops back to the normal internal sd folder.. what the hell is going on?

Your on ATT so get the odin oneclick and properly start with the leaked ICS rom.
The onclick has bootloader updates thats CWM wont give you and it also installs the most recent radio and most recent ril's.
The odin "oneclick" will wipe the entire phone and set it up stock and should correct any wierd formatting errors.
Then use the Odin "program" to flash CWM tar
Then try flashing a rom again.
Oh take that card from your atrix and format it FAT32 with a pc and only put the rom and rom updates on it to start with. If you get this far, you should be good to go.

i think it works for other things too.
ex: why is sky blue? why is my pee yellow? how to flash a rom?

You can't have an sd card in when flashing cm10 or any jelly bean rom...some people get away with it but it fives a lot of people errors (my self included)
Also every jb thread op except thebills jellybean threads say to pull the sd card before flashing...

You figured it out or you gave up??? I hope you figured it out...
Anyways, it usually does not matter what you have mounted...because when flashing a rom it will usually mount what needs to be mounted through the install script
But sometimes it doesn't...if that's the case system is all that usually needs to be mounted...but you can mount everything if you want
And the link qkster put up talks about the mounts, and also the formats under mounts and storage...maybe you should read

Apparently, he gave up testing ROMs. I am sure that some day, ROM testers will be eligible for a "Testing (ROM) Hall of Fame"...but only those who have bricked (soft-brick or hard-brick) every phone they ever had and continued to play with new ROM will be considered.

Did you check the OS to verify the file is good before trying to flash in recovery?

no i did not im an idiot(and a noob)
as far as i know its a little late for that
is this salvagable. i have an old pc running vista but i dont know what to do with it (besides stop being a cheapskate and move to 7)
Verify the file us good and for your exact model of phone. Then wipe everything and re - flash from recovery. Make sure to install a GAPPs package if you need to.
