E:unknown value for path [/sd-ext] - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

That's what I get when accessing the "advanced" part of CWM Touch 5.8.1.3 on my skyrocket(to wipe dalvik cache). I also got something similar during a nandroid backup.
What does this mean and why am I getting this message?

Something to do with your external sd card. Might want to Odin cwm again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

It's done this since I've had the phone.. part of me thinks it's because of all the weird partitioning i had to do when i was using this external card with my atrix and the lapdock.. trying to unlock the webtop and all that insanity. I've tried repartitioning but it doesn't do the job.. now what?
I don't think re-odining CWM will do it, I've been on 4 different CWMs since getting my skyrocket and they've all done this.
I'm also having trouble running sean's newest ICS rom(i went back to GB for a while, too many little bugs were driving me crazy) now. Phone won't boot with it installed. Could this be because the dalvik can't be wiped? where is the dalvik cache written to?

Have you tried using a different external SD card to see if it still gives you that error?

naw, i know i should. i will soon, i was just kind of looking to see if this was a common thing. just formatted the card and will try again. the issue never caused any problems until right now, i'm thinking it's part of the reason i can't boot the ROM. will try reflashing after formatting the external card, then if that doesn't work i'll try going back to the GB nandroid, if it still doesn't boot then i'll try the external card and get back.

You shouldn't need an external to boot the rom. Everything should be flashed from the internal. Just leave the external out, reflash everything, and boot up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

yeah i figured it couldn't really be the external causing the boot failure. but would not being able to properly wipe the dalvik cause it? because it returns the error when i go to wipe the dalvik. sorry, i'm like a half-noob... got all the terms and procedures down, but the under the hood stuff is still coming slowly lol
edit: no dice. just won't boot at all. going to ODIN cwm again as suggested and try that.

now things are getting really weird. after ODINing CWM, when i go to install from the external SD it just keeps going to my internal. both "internal" and "external" sd card options go to the internal. there's a subfolder for the external_sd as it would be in root explorer, but that just loops back to the normal internal sd folder.. what the hell is going on?

Your on ATT so get the odin oneclick and properly start with the leaked ICS rom.
The onclick has bootloader updates thats CWM wont give you and it also installs the most recent radio and most recent ril's.
The odin "oneclick" will wipe the entire phone and set it up stock and should correct any wierd formatting errors.
Then use the Odin "program" to flash CWM tar
Then try flashing a rom again.
Oh take that card from your atrix and format it FAT32 with a pc and only put the rom and rom updates on it to start with. If you get this far, you should be good to go.

Lock Pattern Screen

Hi I have flashed my phone with a few roms and now that I have flashed any new rom and even whipped out and reformatted my sd card etc. I get the screen unlock pattern all the time.... even though all I have to do is swipe anywhere and not input a pattern unlock its really annoying!
Can anyone direct me on how I should go about this?
I currently flashed :
[Heimdall][One-Click][UVKJ6] The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection [12/11/2011]
But I want to clean it out completely and start all over without the worry of this unlock pattern!

Do a backup, perform a factory data reset, and you should be good to go. It's possible that clearing the cache & Davlik cache might work, but I'm not sure.

Weird. I had an issue like that after installing the initial Octane release. I think I might've flashed chadster's KG4 via ODIN afterward to clean it out as it flashes 4 different files (PIT, PDA, CSC, Phone).

Yeah, that's the one I personally always go back to that one to get a clean start. So far it's worked well for me.
As for what ROM, man, that's subjective I just read that Whitehawkx relased Valhalla Final. As for me I currently have Octane. I'd probably go to KG4, then stock KJ6, and maybe go to something custom from there. Others may have different ideas, though.

Try backing up your sd card and wiping it. Or use a different sdcard.
Everything on the phone gets reflashed. I have tested all three one clicks and have not experienced what you are saying.

To be fair, the one clicks, nor do any other method we tried (odin flashing, cwm falshing), reset EVERYTHING. The thread regarding incorrect time zones required a "hard reset" to get everything right again. Not sure if this should apply to this thread, but worth mentioning.

Do you mean that you see the lockscreen when booting for the first time after oneclick? It looks like a crappy low res lockscreen? If so, just enter your old pin/password. It wont ask again... Until you setup protected lockscreen again.
If not, and what you are trying now doesnt work, then could you rephrase the problem?

Any time you flash anything you risk a brick. It's uncommon, if you know what you're doing, but it happens. Almost Every ROM has specific instructions for flashing.
And make sure you do a nandroid backup first.

Yes, that's what a nandroid is.
Wipe cache, wipe dalvik.
Buddy, you need to stop what you're doing and read for a few days before flashing.

I just made sure I did everything exactly it said and am now running a flashed rom
Do you know how warm I feel inside to see someone that actually READS?
And to clarify on ROM flashing, what happens is your internal storage is partitioned I to several parts. When you flash, you write to those partitions. For example, when you flash a recovery, it writes an image to that partition, similar to burning an ISO onto a CD. Hope that makes stuff a little clearer... so yes, if you're not careful, you're going to screw yourself over by telling your processor to do something it doesn't understand. It's like if I suddenly told you to go make me a sandwich in Chinese. Unless you understand Chinese, you would freak out and get confused.

well I need to get rid of all the old application settings, folders, ect from all the apps/roms that I have installed. I have a TON of old folders on there that I don't know whether they are in use or not and to sum it up I guess i want to make the folder structure ect like it was when the phone was new.
Format everything andros11 mentioned. The /Data folder is where app stuff is kept so it will wipe it clean.

Not sure why people always ask there (somewhat unrelated) questions in other people threads...makes it harder to find the help you need cause people assume the only question asked is what's in the title...so by scrolling through threads I would never guess someone asked about heimdall problems, id assume it was strictly about erasing data on the phone...two unrelated things -atleast post your question in a thread that is about heindall problems or when heimdall goes bad...etc
Anyways...what heimdall did you use? Try running it again, don't close it when it finishes, check the box for bootloader and the do it once more (again don't close the program after the first heimdall flash...leave ot open)

Well. I did have red recovery when I was wiping, then I started messing with flashing new roms and ended up soft bricking my phone. I had the sim card problem before, which led me to wiping and re-partitioning the sd card then using heimdal to get stock back on. I just need to know what I can do to try and figure out what is causing the problem. I was running Aeon with red recovery. I didn't care for it. I had more problems than I wanted.

Soft Brick?

Hey guys,
Just experienced what I think is a soft brick. I know that this has been talked about a dozen times, and I have searched. I just want a more experienced yes or no to be sure.
Basically, last night I tried flashing PAndroid on my skyrocket and I went through the format system, format data, factory reset, and wipe cache. Then when I went into flash a zip it said something to the effect of "E: Can't access SD Card". So then I tried to use my band road but that also gave me the error. I then tried to mount the SD card, but it gave me another error. So, guessing that it would just factory reset me, I rebooted.
Now, my phone will vibrate and flash the Samsung logo before going to a black screen (but the screen is on). It also had the symptom of sticky power button for a while with the few second interval buzzing, but I jammed the power button and it seemed to stop doing that and is now doing the aforementioned thing instead.
Should I go use Vincom's soft Brick guide? Also, does anyone have a link to a 7zip extractor that isn't riddled with viruses? (had a hell of a time getting rid of them the first time I rooted haha)
Again, I know this is probably a fairly obvious answer, but yall have just been so helpful in the past that it makes me want to come here before just winging it. And I'm really nervous with this being my first time haha.
Thanks a lot guys, yall are the best!

You wiped system. That's why nothing is happening. You should still be able to enter recovery. Now why your recovery was giving you that error is a different story. Go to recovery and copy the version down here.

Okay, I managed to get into recovery, but I'm still getting the error about the SD card not being mounted. I was looking on Google and I found two different solutions. One was to re flash CWM with Odin, but would that mess up my phone because it already has CWM on it? The other was to reformat my SD card on the computer, but I have no honest idea how to do that haha.

[Q] Stuck in recovery mode, can't mount sd card

I messed up bad. :crying: I have some idea what I'm doing but I just made a terrible mistake. I was running Viperxl with exernalx kernel and I wanted to try cyanogenmod 10.1. I had a back up of the factory version that was rooted and a back up of viperxl/externalx. I tried flashing the cyanogenmod rom and it was stuck in the loading screen. So I rebooted back into recovery then tried to flash the rooted factory backup I had. Same thing. It was stuck in the loading screen. Here's where I went wrong. I rebooted back into bootloader and tried factory reset without really knowing what it did. Now I have no back up. When I try to mount the sd card my computer says it has to format it first. And to format it, my computer has to clear it. And luckily I didn't just go for that. Any idea of what to do next? I'm stuck lol. Thanks for the help
Edit: Ok it's not really an sd card. All I can describe is it says drive G: and it has 10gb of internal storage(but it it has 16gb total it just says it will wipe about 10gb storage, can someone explain?) that I would have to all wipe out to format. I thought you would just call it an internal sd card but I don't think that's right. I just don't want to wipe anything important

Yeah I learned that the hard way lol. I usually check before doing stuff like that but... no excuse, I just went stupid. I thought it would be bad to format the disk since it wipes everything off? Is the important software on the other drive and not the 10gb sd card? Noob question but I just want to make sure before I make this irreversible
Edit: Ok I put more thought into this and I don't think you would call it an sd card. Just internal storage. But I see you have the same phone so I hope your advice is good. I just need to be reassured before doing anything else

I can't mount the sd card though since I factory reset it. Unless I format it on my computer and doing that will wipe everything off. And I'm not sure how that will turn out. And chances are, since you've corrupted the memory, the data will be gone anyway unfortunately.

Just format it... If your that concerned you shouldn't be messing with the phone.. look at it this way it's corrupted and won't boot... No choice anymore..
You should read read read before doing stuff like this... It's easy to brick these phones. When I root and modify phones I'm prepared for something to screw up. But I personally spent days learning what to do before I started..

Thanks for the quick reply! That's what I thought. I just scared myself away from doing anything else. I don't always f up but when I do, I f up real bad lol. Most profound way to learn imo. And not to jack my own thread but can you run elementalx 6.7 with cyanogenmod 10.1? Can't seem to find answer and I'm not familiar enough with this stuff yet(obviously)
No you absolutely cannot use elemental kernel with aosp based ROMs. It's only for use with sense ROMs. It probably says that in the OP of the kernel thread. You really need to do some reading.

Elemental x is for sense only

Yeah, exactly like I said, it's the first line of the kernel thread.

Didn't see this till now. Is it that easy? I thought it took something more technical and risky than this. I read into this for two days straight before doing anything and everything went smooth. And I did back it up. Not sure what went wrong there when trying to flash it because it worked earlier. There's just a few things I'm not too familiar with like the factory reset. And for some reason I tried it assuming it just reset it back to how it came out of the factory. It's all a learning process
I guess you leaned the hard way huh, just remember never to factory reset in bootloader again, only in recovery. And do some more reading, your question about elemental kernel would have answered itself if you took the time to read properly.

Ok that makes sense. Idk why I didnt just check the kernel thread. I was just being lazy. Well.. you're definitely right. I got plenty of reading to do. I just always over analyze things and search stuff too specific which makes asking these questions on threads easier
There's nothing wrong with asking questions. But usually the same question has been asked and answered before, so be sure to search effectively first, it's part of xda rules.

Yeah I understand that lol. I thought about that before asking. I was mostly just wondering if it was ok to wipe the memory to format it. And I explained everything just to check and make sure there was nothing else that could be done. Which I probably could've found the answers myself but it's a bit overwhelming making these mistakes without knowing what to do. Just want to cry out for help. Things always look so much easier retrospectively lol. And they usually are too
All in all I think you did the right thing, you have the right information we need to tackle the problem. You'll find xda to be a great place, it's full of like minded people that are willing to lend a hand when the **** hits the fan.
