Hi,
I need some help.
I rooted this morning, deleted some bloatware and downloaded titanium backup and backed up files.
Now my next step was to delete the recovery file with root manager but the app wont let me switch to R/W when I am in the bin folder and it will not let me delete the recovery file.
I think I was supposed to create a recovery file? But I did so on ROM Manager.

Why are you trying to delete it? If you are trying to get CWM you still need to install the modded 3e recovery and then rename the recovery you are trying to delete instead which is separate from the CWM download you do in Rom Manager, or at least I'm guessing that's what your trying to do...
IF that's the case you DEFF have some reading to do...BOOM...<--click it lol
Thanks bro
i see the light, im on the right track now.
LOL, wtf, I downloaded the zip recovery, unzipped and put it on the sd card.
I copy, then when trying to rename, it wont let me mount R/W
Okay... LOL.. it was the root explorer app. there was something wrong with it. I reinstalled and it works.
I got it free on 4shared

Well it's usually something isn't it? But ya most of the questions and/or problems you might have can be answered in that link I gave you, an already answered question in the Q&A, or the "super thread" sticky in the dev section.

Big thanks for hooking up the link and big ups to the devs and creator of the link.
I had to find out what was the cause so I wont repeat. I went through a boot cycle. From the video, it said to just rename the recovery to .bak. I think that was the cause of the boot cycle. (Gotta follow steps!)
Thank god for the unbrick by GTG.
I will try again but I will delete the original recovery file.
Hey I admit, ima noob at rooting/flashing but we all got to start somewhere!
guys how do you remove the root when you dont want it?

If you used SuperOneClick there is definitely an "Unroot" option when open up the program. If you want something different, Gtg's Ultimate Unbrick will put your phone back to a completely stock state, EVEN if your phone is not bricked, don't let the name scare ya lol
yeah I used GTG UB, works great, itll be like if you just turned the phone on for the first time, i was very happy. lol
Now I got S7 with Redrom and beats by dre logo wallpaper, so sweet!

AT&T stock, sorry, didn't see you were rodgers. So from what I've seen there is no Odin back to complete stock for rodgers, also the link chrscap gave you will not work without modification, its meant for AT&T. The only link I know of for Rogers stock is HERE but it includes root. (look through that thread and see if "unroot" is discussed)
I do know you can manually remove root by first removing the Superuser App then the su binary.
Alright thanks for the direction.

you may need busybox for root explorer to remount the /system folder. download from the market. (you could always skip all this by flashing the comunity kernel in heimdall)

Okay so from the help of GTG I removed the Root off the stock rom.
Here's what i did. It's probably obvious for others, but I didnt realize it so whatever, just posting it incase anyone got stuck with the rooted gingerbread 2.3.3 and didnt know how to rid of the root. For me superoneclick doesnt work dont know why. So also you can use this method if you cant get that to work.
I also didnt realize that root explorer could just remove the root files so that when you factory reset it doesnt come back. Go figure .
01/11/2011
INFUSE 4G -- BACK TO STOCK 2.3.3 GINGERBREAD METHOD --
Visit this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193927
Download Odin_UXKG3_rooted_no_bootloaders_vs.zip & Extract its contents.
Flash using GTG's method. USE the ODIN version because it is not De-odexed.
RETURN TO UXKG3 KERNEL:
Download it from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197248
> Odin_Stock_Rogers_UXKG3_Kernel.zip
Again follow the steps mentioned in GTG's thread.
MAKE SURE VOODOOLAG FIX IS DISABLED!
HOW: Create a folder on your internal SD card called Voodoo. Then create another folder inside of it called disable-lagfix.
I didn't do this the first time and the phone bricked on me D:
FLASH KERNEL WITH ODIN --
After phone has booted
Download Root explorer from market & locate and delete:
/system/xbin/su
/system/xbin/busybox
/system/app/Superuser
go to settings>Privacy
-- DELETE USER DATA ALONG WITH SD CARD DATA --
DO IT, reboot. NO ROOT PURE STOCK.
When you factory reset the root wont be there either. Thank god.

Not to nitpick but I'm looking at the 'gtg's stock uxkg3 rom with root removed' and noticed that it has the de-odexed apk's and framework files. I'm pretty sure that the Rogers Infuses, out of the box, have odex files. Would the lack of odex files be enough reason for Rogers not to service an Infuse with the reason being that some of the system files have been modified?
Also, not a big deal, but the updater-script still has references to 'su' and 'busybox' and symlinks to bin files that do not exist (ex. mkdir).
It would be awesome if gtg could provide the original framework. Or anyone with a rogers phone.

ok guys heres what im gonna do. im gonna download the odin version of the uxkg3 root package. pull all the apps and framework from there. and drop them into the rom package on here. i need someone to test once im done.
The odin version, are you able to remove the odex or whatever its called from it? And I'd be willing to test it when i get back home. Around 6-7pm est time. I take it around 5-6pm for your time Jordan.

yea, I apologize. right after I hit the post button I realized I had posted it in the wrong one. Is there a certain person who is supposed to fix that or can I do it?
and as for the reply above asking "wont the stock odexed roms do this"? they might but I have never been able to push the correct file to system/bin to fix the clockwork recovery so I cant even get in there to flash any different rom. I have been researching for a few hours and I think I can undo everything in superoneclick.

You *SHOULD* be able to get away with the KG2 ROM which T-Mobile sent OTA to the Sidekick a few months ago. You can get that and the PIT file required to flash it back via ODIN here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186954
*DISCLAIMER* I'm not responsible for anything you do or do not do here or any negative outcome. Of course, I'm happy to take the credit if everything turns out just peachy.

The link works fine, you can flash the KG2 one linked above this post or the KD1 version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088413 . Follow the instructions, then once you use ODIN to get back to stock you can return the phone as it is. It'll be just like the software was never manipulated.
Also, i'll be moving this thread to the general section by the end of the day. If you havent responded yet i'll PM you to see if you still need help.
Immediate action required
Yeah, lolzy title.
I soft-bricked my SK4G trying to flash a custom ROM without making any backups or checking anything prior.. and I suffered.
I have ODIN and the sk4g.pit file, a good USB connection with stock cable and I cna get into download mode. Everything is looking really good, except MegaUpload and MultiUpload are down thanks to our guys up in the White House.
So, my (really desperate) question is, can anyone give me a working link to either KD1OdinSTOCK.tar or KG2OdinSTOCK.tar ? Even if it's .tar.md5, as long as it is the file I need to flash back to factory firmware, I'll love you forever. Been looking for 2 days already =\

Please help me, I'm really quite desperate. :\
EDIT: I found a firmware that seems to be the latest for SK4G, Looks like the tag is "KH1" Rather than KD1 or KG2.
androidwaptoday.blogspot.com/2011/10/stock-rom-t839uvkh1-221-for-samsung.html
I've downloaded it but I can't get into the .tar without a password? Is this normal for android firmware or is something wrong?
I'm also curious if I can odin my phone with this file rather than the other 2 mentioned above. Thanks again!
I also need the KD1 or KD2 firmware... it would be very helpful if somebody could post a working link!!! Ive been looking for 3 days haha
Help would be greatly appreciated!
Souldrainer, I think I may have found newer firmware. It looks legit and is from SamFirmWare.
http://hotfile.com/dl/145788939/08a9a06/SGH-T839_T839UVKH1_TMB.zip.html
That is the address to the file itself. If that does not work, look up "T839UVKH1" on SamFirmWare.com.
To get the password to open the file, you'll need to sign up on their website (free)
as far as I know, it contains everything KD1 or KG2 firmware would, and is newer. I believe you odin your phone with this program. I'm about to... as soon as I can get odin to recognize my phone.
the reason why i wanted it was because in case i did something wrong with CWM, because i cannot put the recovery file in with KJ2, i wanted something i could rely on to back it up because i can't make a nandroid backup..
I rooted the phone but it wont let me put in the recovery file, and when i try to boot into recovery i get the stock recovery, am i supposed to use the update.zip file that i got? cuz im not sure if it would work with KJ2.
and thank you for the file!!! i shall check it out xD
I believe the reason you're not going to CWM Recovery is because theres a binary file you need to edit since the SideKick has a faulty Recovery file.
http://www.simply-android.com/discu...work-mod-recovery-for-t-mobile-sidekick-4g/p1
If I'm not mistaken, the edited binary file can be found here, and that will allow you to boot into CWM Recovery. Be sure to back up the files just in case. And on the site it tells you to overwrite (still back up) so overwrite, and do not replace or rename. Hopefully that'll help!
yea but it wont let me replace the file, it keeps saying file already exists or that i cant do that

If you are rooted, you have to make sure that the system partition is mounted as readable/writable (r/w) before you attempt to replace the recovery binary file.
The easiest way to do that is download ES File Explorer from the market, then go into settings and scroll all the way to the bottom. Select the check box for "Root Explorer" ; then, check the box for "Mount File System". You will get a superuser warning prompt- "Allow" it.
Now go follow the process to overwrite the recovery binary and you shouldn't have any problems.
--Finally, make sure that you ALSO have the update.zip on your SD card and boot into recovery. You will end up seeing the stock recovery-select "reinstall packages" and voila... you should be in CWM.
The password is "samfirmware.com" without the quotes (simple google search).
So I also have this file (T839UVKD1) sitting on my hard drive waiting to find out: is this safe to use?
I don't care if it's new or old, it's the only .tar related to the SK4G that's downloadable and it just needs to work.
I just don't understand why no one will simply post T839UVKD1 or T839UVKG2 for those of us who need it (is it a bandwidth thing?), everyone just wants to say, "just go to here/this post," where all the wonderful instructions are that can help me save my phone, but where the links are dead (megaupload and multiupload are down, as we all know, so the files are unattainable) so we download Odin or Heimdal and the .pit file, but are stuck because: no .tar.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
T839UVKD1 SHOULD be safe to use proving the file you have is not corrupted, you can use it for Odin. if you wouldnt mind posting it i would really super appreciate it!

Your thread wasn't deleted. It's was pushed down by other questions thereby moving those thread up and yours down.
For example, if you went to my how to thread a few pages back and posted a question for help or clarification, that will move that thread up to the top, until another new thread pops up. Because of sup many new thread created on the same topic, most regular users annoyed by new thread on the same topic.
Since your already rooted, if you ready through my thread that mtease gave as an answer, there are links to YouTube vids that will guide you.
You should also see a write up where to start if you were on froyo.
Follow the link to gtg's original post. He spelled out very specific instructions on how to flash his ROM by several methods. If you don't want his ROM, use another.
Spend some time looking over the instructions I started...it will start to make sense.
edit: by the way, here was your original post..a page back. It wasn't deleted. Just got pushed further back by other new threads. All you had to do was go to it, and add another question and it would have been bumped up...instead of starting another thread. see?

Infuse Android forum needs an intro
All the information is in pages linked from the Superthread, but the Superthread itself only compiles a rather vast collection of resources with no clear sequence except that which is implicit, and actually links to poor explanations sometimes.
One example, with no offense aimed to those who made the effort, is that it has exactly one YouTube link that explains how to install modded recovery, and it's the only one I've found on YouTube---out of several that are on there---that fails to mention changing the permissions of the recovery file, which is totally crucial. (It has to be set to the same set of permissions of the one it replaces.)
The order in which these things have to be done simply is not laid out clearly for newcomers. I would do it, but I'm hardly knowledgeable enough about the phone at this point to do so. My instructions would be dangerous, perhaps, but I do have a set I made for an email to a fellow Infuse user... will post later. They're a dangerous mess, now
You do not need to change the permissions of the recovery file. Wherever you heard that, they were sadly mistaken. You just copy it to system/bin. After renaming the original to something like, recovery.bak, or old, or whatever. Use rom manager to flash to cwm, choose i9000. Boot into cwm, choose reinstall packages, twice. Simple, 5 min, done. You are making this sound hard, when its simple.

If you go to the Infuse Super Thread and read the Heimdall one click link, it's a good start. It will get you to a full working Gingerbread install, which gets you the gingerbread bootloader that many of the gingerbread roms need. From there you can install a kernel (I suggest Entropy's daily driver) which is also linked on the super thread. Then you can install CWM from Rom Manager, and then it's just following the instructions listed on your rom of choice. I used Heimdall to get to stock Gingerbread, which I was quite happy with for a few weeks. I have now worked up to cm7 using the very same steps. First time installing a rom. Yes I bricked my phone about 4 times, but each time I just reinstalled Gingerbread using Heimdall and started over.

I could not get into the modded 3e recovery without changing the permissions.
The steps I did:
1) Restored to stock using GTG's Unbrick.
2) Wiped data and cache in 3e recovery.
3) Flashed stock UCKH1 with Odin.
4) Rooted.
5) Copied the modded recovery file into the /system/bin folder after renaming the original to recovery.bak.
6) Shutdown.
7) Attempt to get into 3e Recovery. It sat there at the Samsung boot screen.
It still boots normally after pulling the battery. I tried this several times and it simply will not go into the modded 3e Recovery until I changed the file's permissions.
You did it wrong.... read how to root again....
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Come to think of it... I didn't install ROM Manager... I already had the update.zip file for CWM on my internal SD storage. Does ROM Manager automatically change the recovery file's permissions?
BTW: I know how to root my phone and I already have the modded 3e recovery and I can get into CWM. I was trying to do all this without changing the recovery file permissions.
Here's the video created by gtg465x stating permissions need to be changed 1:40 into the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkMo8rBehHg
Look apparently you don't know how tobrrot your phone because you have this thread... yes you need rom manager... flash to cwm with rommanager after you replace recovery, boot into recovery, reinstall packages, twice, done. Or flash the community kernel via Odin and you'll have cwm that way...

LOL.... This wasn't even my thread.. I assure you I'm rooted and I am using CWM as I'm able to use Titanium Backup and other root required apps as well as make nandroid backups using CWM.
You asked where the whole notion of changing the recovery file permissions came from and I provided it.
To the OP: If you get stuck at the white Samsung bootup screen after copying the recovery file into system/bin try changing permissions on the modded recovery file as shown in the video posted above.
*** The OP hasn't even been back since his/her original post... probably got scared away.
I have a stock Infuse 4g from AT&T and I would like a step by step, like a tutorial of everything I have to do for flashing custom roms, what to backup, installing CWM, etc. Thanks.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Yes, I know about that thread, but they don't answer all of my questions, like for example: I have stock GB, do I still root with super one click? What is the first step in flashing custom roms, rooting and then installing CWM? How do I install CWM? What to use to backup apps? What is Rom manager from the android market and what is it for, is it useful? How to backup contacts? Before flashing, should I remove the sim card? When flashing, is it always done in CWM? If so, what's the exact process?
What I want is more of a fool proof step by step, just to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. I had to use Heimdall's one click back to stock to go from froyo to GB UCKJ4 because of the boot loop even though the phone wasn't rooted or anything, it was stock. If I did that, what are my options? What should I do if I want to flash custom roms from scratch? Also, CWM is kept even after a factory reset or a wipe? it doesn't get deleted in any way when you want ti flash another Rom?
Wow, I'm sorry but you should do some research first before you ask these questions. Google has an excellent feature called search. I'm sure if you use it you can find your answers as they have all been asked before. Everything I have learned has been from reading and rereading everything I could before I attempted rooting. Android central has a great guide to everything root. Then come back with questions. Sorry to go off but it seems like people just come here to have their hand held. I'm sure you could find someone to donate to on here that would take you by the hand if that's the route you choose.

Yea, I was just goofing. Qksters bald avatar and all the spoon talk reminded me of the matrix....thought someone would get it. Ah well.

Anyway, thanks qkster, with your Heimdall to UCBL3 and CWM installation I was able to do it. And now I have ZEUS on my Infuse :3.
Now, what are some must have apps rooted or not?

good job..
See how easy it was?
Anyway, lol..the spoon was on all my signature links
Let me just throw this out there: as a noob myself, I understand where op is coming from. On forums this large, it is easy to get lost. I also find that I spend so much time reading things that don't answer my questions. I know that's part of the process though, but can feel pretty overwhelming.
May I suggest that not just 1 person has to answer all the questions. Maybe u come across a post like this and answer just 1 or 2 questions, or paste in a link or 2 to where the specific question is answered.
Also, I know that I've asked a question in the most appropriate place & someone has come back saying it's not the right place, even though it's in the q&a - noob - device forum. It's just hard at first. So, pls, don't bust op's chops too bad, b/c somewhere on here it says that it helps everyone if anyone takes some of their time to educate.

Noob here too, but I have done some of this successfully, and then I played around too much and really, really bricked my phone - but fixed it, so I have learned a bit. These are my thoughts:

Yes. Get rooted. I've used S-O-C twice. Had to play around with it first. I think I ended up being successful by doing it thru my phone, not on the PC.

1st step - root, then - backup more than just 1 way-use some from market and put things in more than 1 place; Titanium Backup seems to be standard around here too. Here is a great youtube link that helped me a lot to prepare: http://youtu.be/ozNVeGPUlU8

When I got bricked last night, after trying 2 methods and much freaking out, GTG worked. Working link for that download is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?i57410xodydx5l1. Thread here → http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251

It stayed for me, even through brick.
I know you got your questions answered, but maybe this will help you, or someone else, in the future. Again, I'm no expert - far from it - but this is what worked for me. Good luck!
Can't think of another way of saying this...HELP!
So, I was able to get 3e and clockworkmod recovery installed on my Infuse. (A great accomplishment for me, trust me)
I went through the process of wiping data and caches to install my new ROM but I put the two zips (Cyan7 & Google Apps) on the external sdcard so when I went to install them I couldn't see them. I thought my only option then was to chose to restore from backup in CM recovery and now I'm stuck on the Samsung boot logo.
I tried a battery pull and VOLup/VOLdwn/POWER to try to get into recovery but I'm still stuck on the boot logo. What can I do now?
I'd really appreciate your help. Cheers.

No need to recover. Simple enough. U've tried restarting normal, and it didn't work?
No unfortunately...
I'm stuck on the Samsung boot logo. I think my battery pull after being frozen after the restore didn't help matters. I've tried vol+/vol-/power and vol-/power and still can't get into recovery. Plugged into my MAC it's not recognized.

Well, if it were me, I'd pull batt and let it sit while I search this site to see what other people have done when stuck in the loop. You're sure to find answers somewhere in/related to being bricked threads, though I'm sure you're not bricked, so relax and take a breath. I'd offer other suggestions, but I'm too new, so it'd just be speculation on my part.

Cheers, I think I will do that. I'm feverishly scouring the site and the interweb...I just hope I don't have to re-flash a stock ROM and start all over again. Of course that would be better than having a paperweight I suppose.

I felt this warranted its own thread, and is pertinent to development. So here's to my first thread in the development section!
As you know, the Charge is getting an update to its Gingerbread stock ROM, titled FP5.
I was one of the lucky ones to get it early, so I pulled it out of cache and uploaded it to Dropbox.
So here it is:
http://db.tt/feigCZuH
If you want to try it:
You need to be fully stock before you can use this. This includes being on RFS. Then download, rename to update.zip, place on root of SD, and flash on the stock recovery.
To Root (assuming starting at stock FP5):
Download the CWM flashable root zip, found at http://androidsu.com/superuser/ (its rude of me to hotlink it). Download the whole package for ARM, not just binary (get 3.0.7-efghi-signed). Put it on your SD card.
NOTE: Most of us Charge users have found that SuperSU (Chainfire's replacement for Superuser) is much more stable on this device. I personally recommend SuperSU, but if you want to keep using superuser, it's your call. Installation instructions will be the same, just Google SuperSU and download the zip rather than Superuser.
Then, get the CWM recovery, and flash it via Odin. Uncheck "auto reboot". Unplug your device and boot to CWM, mount /system, then flash the SU zip (I would wipe cache and dalvik just to be safe).
Your device will boot and be rooted, however the CWM recovery will be overwritten. Get root explorer and search for "install-recovery.sh" (in /system/etc) Change permissions, delete, rename, or otherwise maim the script.
Finally, reflash CWM in Odin. Your device will boot and be rooted, with CWM Recovery, with in the stock FP5 ROM. Feel free to debloat to your pleasing.
You want a video tutorial? You're hard to please.
http://youtu.be/DXSmONvpkSQ
the introduction is VERY off sync. Please don't turn the volume up and scare the crap out of yourself. Sorry, I can't make it available on mobile, something about copyright infringement.
I'll be making an Odin next week, since a user requested it. Just have to wait until I get back from vacation... EDIT: Odins are already available. None from me.

I look forward to see how the Tweaked version of FP5 goes & if anything will be of use to dwitherell.
Thanks for posting FP5. :victory:

I have no idea of you need to rename it to update.zip or anything like that, so if someone smarter than me could advise, that would be helpful

You do need to rename it to update.zip before you flash it with the stock recovery

Thank you sir, can't wait to try it on my charge when it comes back from samsung...unless they send me back a nexus
has anyone tried it yet? I'm assuming it will work on tweaked 2.x?
I tried to flash it via CWM (before realizing that I needed to rename it to "update.zip"), but got "installation aborted". I did revert back to RFS first though.... I guess I'll try it again...
You most likely have to be full stock to use it.

You have to be 100% stock FP1 stock recovery
OK, so first off thanks kvswim for getting this out there so fast
Secondly, I'm out and about for a wee bit, but once I'm back at my computer (mid next week) I'll get to work. I'm not sure how long it'll take, but I always assume it'll take a while.
I would also like to put out a request. The last update I did I went through and updated every theme in tweaktools along the way. That took a LONG time, so I was wondering if there were any interested in assisting the theme update process. This will obviously not be relevant until I have the base all finished up, but if you feel you have some of the necessary know-how and are interested feel free to PM me. Most of the themes were made by folks that no longer have the device, which is why I updated everything last time. If I get a few takers I'll make a thread to keep things all organized as far as who is doing what, that way proper credit can be given to those that lend a hand.
Also, no worries if there is no interest/time to help. I have no issue doing it, it'll just take a bit longer.
Carry on.
I can probably make an Odin of this next week if anyone wants it.
Also dwith, I can't help you at all with the themes, I would need to walk through it at least once first. Never taken apart a theme.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
Does this include improved radios? Will there be new radios we could flash before Tweaked gets updated?
Yes, there are radio updates in this. However I can't pull radios only until next week, and even then I'll need someone to help me.

Cool. I have no problem with waiting. I edited the fingerprint line in build.prop so I won't be hassled by the update. My phone runs fine.
You can only dump the LTE radio, you won't be able to get a dump of the CDMA radio.

Is there a new kernel with FP5 & will you update your own kernel fork with it? I found out that http://opensource.samsung.com has FP5 as SCH-I510-VZW_GB_Opensource_Update2.zip available.
I've returned to stock and then taken the OTA and can't seem to keep my root or cwm recovery. sooo im going to have to edit my build prop until there is a root fix for this.

There's a certain file that checks if your recovery "needs" to be overwritten by stock, and all you need to do is change permissions on that file. For the life of me I can't remember what it is though.
I would imagine that would help you with your root too.
