I felt this warranted its own thread, and is pertinent to development. So here's to my first thread in the development section!
As you know, the Charge is getting an update to its Gingerbread stock ROM, titled FP5.
I was one of the lucky ones to get it early, so I pulled it out of cache and uploaded it to Dropbox.
So here it is:
http://db.tt/feigCZuH
If you want to try it:
You need to be fully stock before you can use this. This includes being on RFS. Then download, rename to update.zip, place on root of SD, and flash on the stock recovery.
To Root (assuming starting at stock FP5):
Download the CWM flashable root zip, found at http://androidsu.com/superuser/ (its rude of me to hotlink it). Download the whole package for ARM, not just binary (get 3.0.7-efghi-signed). Put it on your SD card.
NOTE: Most of us Charge users have found that SuperSU (Chainfire's replacement for Superuser) is much more stable on this device. I personally recommend SuperSU, but if you want to keep using superuser, it's your call. Installation instructions will be the same, just Google SuperSU and download the zip rather than Superuser.
Then, get the CWM recovery, and flash it via Odin. Uncheck "auto reboot". Unplug your device and boot to CWM, mount /system, then flash the SU zip (I would wipe cache and dalvik just to be safe).
Your device will boot and be rooted, however the CWM recovery will be overwritten. Get root explorer and search for "install-recovery.sh" (in /system/etc) Change permissions, delete, rename, or otherwise maim the script.
Finally, reflash CWM in Odin. Your device will boot and be rooted, with CWM Recovery, with in the stock FP5 ROM. Feel free to debloat to your pleasing.
You want a video tutorial? You're hard to please.

the introduction is VERY off sync. Please don't turn the volume up and scare the crap out of yourself. Sorry, I can't make it available on mobile, something about copyright infringement.
I'll be making an Odin next week, since a user requested it. Just have to wait until I get back from vacation... EDIT: Odins are already available. None from me.

I look forward to see how the Tweaked version of FP5 goes & if anything will be of use to dwitherell.
Thanks for posting FP5. :victory:

You do need to rename it to update.zip before you flash it with the stock recovery

Thank you sir, can't wait to try it on my charge when it comes back from samsung...unless they send me back a nexus
has anyone tried it yet? I'm assuming it will work on tweaked 2.x?
I tried to flash it via CWM (before realizing that I needed to rename it to "update.zip"), but got "installation aborted". I did revert back to RFS first though.... I guess I'll try it again...
You most likely have to be full stock to use it.

You have to be 100% stock FP1 stock recovery
OK, so first off thanks kvswim for getting this out there so fast
Secondly, I'm out and about for a wee bit, but once I'm back at my computer (mid next week) I'll get to work. I'm not sure how long it'll take, but I always assume it'll take a while.
I would also like to put out a request. The last update I did I went through and updated every theme in tweaktools along the way. That took a LONG time, so I was wondering if there were any interested in assisting the theme update process. This will obviously not be relevant until I have the base all finished up, but if you feel you have some of the necessary know-how and are interested feel free to PM me. Most of the themes were made by folks that no longer have the device, which is why I updated everything last time. If I get a few takers I'll make a thread to keep things all organized as far as who is doing what, that way proper credit can be given to those that lend a hand.
Also, no worries if there is no interest/time to help. I have no issue doing it, it'll just take a bit longer.
Carry on.
I can probably make an Odin of this next week if anyone wants it.
Also dwith, I can't help you at all with the themes, I would need to walk through it at least once first. Never taken apart a theme.

Does this include improved radios? Will there be new radios we could flash before Tweaked gets updated?
Yes, there are radio updates in this. However I can't pull radios only until next week, and even then I'll need someone to help me.

Cool. I have no problem with waiting. I edited the fingerprint line in build.prop so I won't be hassled by the update. My phone runs fine.
You can only dump the LTE radio, you won't be able to get a dump of the CDMA radio.

Is there a new kernel with FP5 & will you update your own kernel fork with it? I found out that http://opensource.samsung.com has FP5 as SCH-I510-VZW_GB_Opensource_Update2.zip available.
I've returned to stock and then taken the OTA and can't seem to keep my root or cwm recovery. sooo im going to have to edit my build prop until there is a root fix for this.

There's a certain file that checks if your recovery "needs" to be overwritten by stock, and all you need to do is change permissions on that file. For the life of me I can't remember what it is though.
I would imagine that would help you with your root too.

I see Kaik541 has a thread in Dev section for an ODIN version of KF1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14782572&postcount=1
This is for those who want to flash and root from using the tar files.
I personally always remove my external memory and sim card before using odin. It is not needed as people will obviously post and neither is doing master clear. I do these steps just to make sure I eliminate any possible issues that can occur during flashing.
1) Download Firmware from http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungusa.htm
2) Flash back to stock JF6 w/ odin one-click and did a master clear.
3) Flash Gingerbread KF1 using Odin (see image attached)
4) Flash fugu kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1010141 (I attached the zImage-root.tar to post if link does not work)
In the first post look for and select the download link in step 2: (credit to nikademus)
How to use:
1: Flash the stock rom
2: Download the image for Heimdall or for Odin
3: Flash it with either Odin or Heimdall
4: Boot once, it will install root and crash/shutdown (it is preferred to let the phone connected to usb so it does not loop boot)
5: Reflash the original kernel
5) Flash stock kernel (attached kernelKF1.7z) credit to lownox for helping me on that
6) Settings>Applications> enable Unknown Sources (AT&T finally got something right)
7) Install busybox from market
8) ENJOY!
thanks for the write up man

I want to do that but I haven't learn how to do anything beyond deodexed. I also still haven't had time to learn how to add "extras" like extended power menu or additional lock screens.
If someone wants to PM the instructions or a link to do so, I'll be happy to do and have it ready tomorrow.
Do we really need another Odin guide? Write one on heimdall. It's open source and actually maintained. It also has a lower brick rate.

Honestly I have never used Heimdall and have never had an issue with ODIN. With that said I also have no objection if anyone wants to write up the parts for Heimdall here or by PMing me, I'll add to it the first post. I am not about to reflash again just to learn a new process when the old one has not given me a single issue.

awesome thanx for figuring it before i had to try a thousand combonations...
This is awesome!
How long should it stay at Samsung after doing all of the steps? I did all of the steps. Samsung flashed several times. Now its just staying at Samsung. Been this way for a couple of minutes.
sdcard issues
ok, first of all I did this and everything worked fine.
Upon first reboot, I think it went 4 or 5 times through the samsung bootloop and then loaded the rom (i wasn't watching it fastidiously).
Upon loading the rom and loading my apps from titanium backup, I finally hit the issue of not being able to move apps to the sd card; it just comes up with "failed to move application". I've rebooted just to make sure things weren't off from first boot. It's still not letting me move any apps to sd (even if allowed in the os).
Any ideas on what to try next?
I'm still at Samsung logo. Don't think its going to load the Rom. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Following the steps. This is the second time I've tried this.
NM, figured it all out.
Going to give it a shot shortly.
This failed to work 3 times. Going back to RFS Gummy.

From what I have read over at Rootzwiki, that seems to be a problem exclusive to Imnuts' hacked kernel (possibly, he posted that he is looking into it as some users used his kernel and didn't have this problem). This process uses another kernel.
I was waiting for more users to give reports back, but I might just give this one a go.

Sucks that the imnuts kernel isn't working right yet. I would love to have the EP1Q kernel working on this, would be much more ideal.

Right now, it's just showing data and dbdata on EXT4, the rest is still on RFS. Is this normal for GB? I can post the exact coding if needed.

Here's what i did. It's probably obvious for others, but I didnt realize it so whatever, just posting it incase anyone got stuck with the rooted gingerbread 2.3.3 and didnt know how to rid of the root. For me superoneclick doesnt work dont know why. So also you can use this method if you cant get that to work.
I also didnt realize that root explorer could just remove the root files so that when you factory reset it doesnt come back. Go figure .

MAKE SURE VOODOOLAG FIX IS DISABLED!
HOW: Create a folder on your internal SD card called Voodoo. Then create another folder inside of it called disable-lagfix.
I didn't do this the first time and the phone bricked on me D:

After phone has booted
Download Root explorer from market & locate and delete:
/system/xbin/su
/system/xbin/busybox

go to settings>Privacy

Not to nitpick but I'm looking at the 'gtg's stock uxkg3 rom with root removed' and noticed that it has the de-odexed apk's and framework files. I'm pretty sure that the Rogers Infuses, out of the box, have odex files. Would the lack of odex files be enough reason for Rogers not to service an Infuse with the reason being that some of the system files have been modified?
Also, not a big deal, but the updater-script still has references to 'su' and 'busybox' and symlinks to bin files that do not exist (ex. mkdir).
It would be awesome if gtg could provide the original framework. Or anyone with a rogers phone.

Your thread wasn't deleted. It's was pushed down by other questions thereby moving those thread up and yours down.
For example, if you went to my how to thread a few pages back and posted a question for help or clarification, that will move that thread up to the top, until another new thread pops up. Because of sup many new thread created on the same topic, most regular users annoyed by new thread on the same topic.
Since your already rooted, if you ready through my thread that mtease gave as an answer, there are links to YouTube vids that will guide you.
You should also see a write up where to start if you were on froyo.
Follow the link to gtg's original post. He spelled out very specific instructions on how to flash his ROM by several methods. If you don't want his ROM, use another.
Spend some time looking over the instructions I started...it will start to make sense.
edit: by the way, here was your original post..a page back. It wasn't deleted. Just got pushed further back by other new threads. All you had to do was go to it, and add another question and it would have been bumped up...instead of starting another thread. see?

If the infuse superthread didn't help then maybe Modding your phone isn't for you...stock sounds like what you need
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Infuse Android forum needs an intro
All the information is in pages linked from the Superthread, but the Superthread itself only compiles a rather vast collection of resources with no clear sequence except that which is implicit, and actually links to poor explanations sometimes.
One example, with no offense aimed to those who made the effort, is that it has exactly one YouTube link that explains how to install modded recovery, and it's the only one I've found on YouTube---out of several that are on there---that fails to mention changing the permissions of the recovery file, which is totally crucial. (It has to be set to the same set of permissions of the one it replaces.)
The order in which these things have to be done simply is not laid out clearly for newcomers. I would do it, but I'm hardly knowledgeable enough about the phone at this point to do so. My instructions would be dangerous, perhaps, but I do have a set I made for an email to a fellow Infuse user... will post later. They're a dangerous mess, now
You do not need to change the permissions of the recovery file. Wherever you heard that, they were sadly mistaken. You just copy it to system/bin. After renaming the original to something like, recovery.bak, or old, or whatever. Use rom manager to flash to cwm, choose i9000. Boot into cwm, choose reinstall packages, twice. Simple, 5 min, done. You are making this sound hard, when its simple.

If you go to the Infuse Super Thread and read the Heimdall one click link, it's a good start. It will get you to a full working Gingerbread install, which gets you the gingerbread bootloader that many of the gingerbread roms need. From there you can install a kernel (I suggest Entropy's daily driver) which is also linked on the super thread. Then you can install CWM from Rom Manager, and then it's just following the instructions listed on your rom of choice. I used Heimdall to get to stock Gingerbread, which I was quite happy with for a few weeks. I have now worked up to cm7 using the very same steps. First time installing a rom. Yes I bricked my phone about 4 times, but each time I just reinstalled Gingerbread using Heimdall and started over.

You do not need to change the permissions of the recovery file.

I could not get into the modded 3e recovery without changing the permissions.
The steps I did:
1) Restored to stock using GTG's Unbrick.
2) Wiped data and cache in 3e recovery.
3) Flashed stock UCKH1 with Odin.
4) Rooted.
5) Copied the modded recovery file into the /system/bin folder after renaming the original to recovery.bak.
6) Shutdown.
7) Attempt to get into 3e Recovery. It sat there at the Samsung boot screen.
It still boots normally after pulling the battery. I tried this several times and it simply will not go into the modded 3e Recovery until I changed the file's permissions.
You did it wrong.... read how to root again....

Come to think of it... I didn't install ROM Manager... I already had the update.zip file for CWM on my internal SD storage. Does ROM Manager automatically change the recovery file's permissions?
BTW: I know how to root my phone and I already have the modded 3e recovery and I can get into CWM. I was trying to do all this without changing the recovery file permissions.
Here's the video created by gtg465x stating permissions need to be changed 1:40 into the video.

Look apparently you don't know how tobrrot your phone because you have this thread... yes you need rom manager... flash to cwm with rommanager after you replace recovery, boot into recovery, reinstall packages, twice, done. Or flash the community kernel via Odin and you'll have cwm that way...

LOL.... This wasn't even my thread.. I assure you I'm rooted and I am using CWM as I'm able to use Titanium Backup and other root required apps as well as make nandroid backups using CWM.
You asked where the whole notion of changing the recovery file permissions came from and I provided it.
To the OP: If you get stuck at the white Samsung bootup screen after copying the recovery file into system/bin try changing permissions on the modded recovery file as shown in the video posted above.
*** The OP hasn't even been back since his/her original post... probably got scared away.
EDIT: Thanks guys, I no longer have this need. Thank you
Folks,
I'm trying to generate a root method that doesn't trip the flash counter in the download mode. If you boot in the download mode, there's a counter for how many non-stock flashes you've done. Anyone here who has rooted has likely tripped this counter and is at least at "1" if not more.
One of the devs helping me with my work has requested a partition from a non-tripped phone, but that of course would require having root. So I've created a flashable stock samsung rom with root injected. But I need help testing it.
The counter is one of those things that could get your support request denied if you ever have to take your phone in for repair.
Mind you... if the test doesn't work, the phone will have it's counter tripped... and that's all on you. I can't be held responsible. I mean, I suppose you could hate me, but it's your own fault for helping
Any takers?
Any phone can meet this requirement by flashing the reset counter package that used to be on here... I think someone linked the package and it's in the themes area. Then the flash counter will now say 'no' but it will still say custom binary. To remove this flash back to stock and update to ics via kies. Then the flash counter will say no and binary will say Samsung official. Hope that will help.
Edit: if the reset counter is no longer there I believe it's the same as the sgs2 (I think that's where the OP pulled it from when they posted it in the themes area). Or if you want I could put the copy I have on dropbox and link it here.

ahhh, ok, lemme find a place to upload my modded root injected tarball.
Mostly, I want to make sure that, if you go into download mode, it says that the counter is at 0. If it's not at 0, then this is pointless
The idea is to upgrade to the latest version through kies. Either that or do a data reset/wipe and then stop the phone from booting when it goes to reboot.
Then, boot into download mode and flash my root injected tar through odin. Once that's done, when you reboot, it should be rooted. If you then go into download mode again, the counter should still be at 0.
If this is the case, then I'll ask you to get me the contents of a partition on your phone.
For now, lemme find a place to upload my tar to. It's huge.
EDIT: Wait... just saw the other stuff... lemme try doing that. If it doesn't work for me, we'll proceed

No I meant you wanted some testing help with something, I dont care about resetting flash numbers just thought you said you need a virgin un rooted phone. If not Ill flash Tweaked on it. Just making sure because you said you wanted a untouched partition.

Oh, thanks, Yeah. Was just trying to generate that partition.
I have a 600M tar file you could flash with odin and wouldn't trip the counter, but it'd take 2 hours to upload, and I'd need somewhere to upload, which is near impossible at that size.
The partition flash that's in themes & apps is for the T989, so maybe there's some bad identifying information there, who knows. While it'd be nice to have an exact version for our phone, that method is good enough for me and for the dude asking me for it
Thanks though!
You could try adrive.com it allows 2gb per file, though I'm not sure on the speed side of things. Seems they have an Android app too.
Lol no worries. I've sent back three phones so far with that other flash. Worked just fine

see then, no worries... now can we let this thread die?
