I read on another thread here on this site and was going to ask this question there but since I don't have enough posts.
I know how to Use ODIN to flash my Samsung Epic back to stock. However, I have upgraded to 2.2 by placing the update.zip file on the root memory card and upgraded by booting into recovery mode.
My question is can I use Odin to flash it back to stock or will it screw something up?
Oh well
since no one knows the answer I guess I will just try and see if it screws up my phone..
You need to get a special version of Odin called "One Click to Stock". It's been specially modified to flash a stock AT&T ROM to your phone with (as expected) just one click.
thank you
I appreciate the response. I used the standard ODIN, PIT and TAR files and was able to return to stock with the latest release. It seems to have worked because it downloaded updates immediately. Thank you again for the response.

Hi everyone
I am a noob so be nice to me. I accidently cracked the screen on my Samsung Vibrant and so have a few questions about how to return the phone back to Stock/unrooted (just like befor i flashed). I am fine if i have to lose my contacts, apps. ect...
Background:
I rooted my phone with One-Click-Root/Unroot from XDA (loved it). I then flashed the latest Nero 5.0 ROM from Team Wiskey (Love it). As part of either the root or flashing the ROM(i can't remember which one), I downloaded "ROM Manager" with CWR.
Q #1: Is it as easy returning to stock ROM as just using "Flashing ClockworkMod Recovery" or should I have used "nandroid" (don't know what it does, but I see it talked about) also?
Q #2: I hear people say that you need Odin to return back to stock ROM, but then I hear that is ONLY if you don't have ROM Manager w/CWR. Do I need Odin or do I only need ROM Manager w/CWR?
Q #3: If all I need is ROM Manager w/CWR and it returnes back to what it was before i flashed, can i just us the "Unroot" button on the One-Click-Root/Unroot"?
Q #4(Last Question): Will I recieve OTA's if I have to us Odin and flash a stock ROM, how do I get back to stock and recieveing OTA's?
I understand that there are alot of posts asking how to return to stock but that is from people where something in the programs went wrong when trying to return to stock. I am just wondering what programs (other than ROM Manager and CWR) are need for me to return to stock? Please help, I don't want my phone to be rejected because my warranty is void. Thanks
Noob123
All thats needed to return to stock is a Nandroid backup of your original ROM.
Oh wait.....
Why do people totally fail at this?
What you need now is an original ROM for your device and then flash it from recovery.
So in other words, I need to download a 2.1 Rom (last version i had) from somewhere back on to my computer and then do the same things that i did to flash Nero 5? Is that where Odin comes in? OR, would CWR already have that ROM and everything all in one package?
Like I said, I am a nook. I am suprised that i didnt brick my phone rooting and flashing a ROM the first time. I may be pushing my luck going back to stock. But, it needs to be done if i want my phone fixed.
I would have a look HERE, in the Samsung Vibrant forum. I'm sure you'll find an Official ROM to Flash somewhere in there.
You would just put the .zip on your SD card, restart to Recovery and select the option to Flash from SD
Okay, i am getting it now. However, wont the "Update.zip" (Nero 5.0) be there on my SD memory already? Will i damage my phone if i delete the "Update.zip" and put in the Stock.zip (then do the recovery thing)? So once i get the Stock ROM uploaded on my phone, can i just use the one-click-unroot (from XDA) to have my phone be unrooted and new just like it was when i bought the phone? Will i get OTA's?
Thank you for your help, i am sorry for bugging you but i feel like i am starting to understand it more. These are probably the last questions that i have....probably
Sorry, I'm new to this so sorry if this seems dumb.
So i bought the phone from rogers and immediately updated to froyo 2.2 official release by rogers/samsung.
I read about all the hype online about rooting and custom roms so i decided to give it a shot.
I used the superoneclick method to root my phone and it was successful.
I then used "rom manager - clockworkmod" and created a restore file before i did any flashing to my phone.
after creating a backup, i went on and flashed to the cognition 3.04.
Now my question is. Am i ever able to get my phone back to its original rom, kernel, and modem? the reason i want to know is because i might need to get my phone replaced due to some technical issues with the phone.
Also, does the backup of my phone after rooting play a part in any of this? if so, how?
Im sorry if there is already a post like this one. Its just that i couldn't find the answer through all the hundreds of pages of threads and replies, so I thought it would be easier to post a here with my specific question. Thanks.
regards,
danny

It guides you through the process of going back to a stock ROM. Btw, I've used it and it works.

Thanks for that. Do you think Odin is the only way to do it or do you think i can use clockworkmod

Do I not use that link in general, or just not to use the firmware given at the bottom? the steps are correct though, no?
also from my searching.
i can put my phone back to my backup point (just after rooting) through clockworkmod. Woud this change my rom back to stock from? how about kernel and modem and all that? would that all get reversed back to my backup point? meaning it will basically be a stock phone. But I think also read somewhere that my kernel and modem does not get changed back to rogers original one. is there a way to do it?
I then found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846501
that says i need the original rogers rom for the captivate by the links there no longer work for download. Also on that thread, it was mentioned that the AT&T logo will still come up on startup, which would not be a good idea if i had to send my phone in for warrenty.
I then looked at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I896
Here it tells me to flash to a i9000 before i reflash to a rogers firmware in order to remove the at&t logo. it also provides me with a link for the " Official Rogers Stock ROM ", but according to somebody on the first link i posted here, it isnt the "official rom"
Any ideas?
This is where I got the stock 2.2 file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042.
Edit: I have flashed a bunch of times and have never got stuck with the AT&T startup after flashing back to stock with the odin file.

Thanks. Do you know if my kernel is going to go back to stock too or is it going to remain the same as the custom rom one?

If you use the odin file the kernal and modem will revert back to stock.

Thanks. So im assuming now that the only time my kernel and modem wont go back to stock is when i flash with CWM. correct?
I haven't tried using the CWM file in that link so I'm not sure if it contains the kernel and modem. As far as custom roms go most if not all come packaged with the kernel and modem of choice.
So.. When I do a "master clear" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989...
Would everything be wiped? I read somewhere that when you do a "wipe" from your settings it only clears user settings or something. What would a "wipe"
from the recovery menu do?
I flashed to a different rom today thinking it will help my battery issue. When i am flashing from one rom to the next, i do a restore back to my backup before i flash to a new rom. Is this the correct method? or am i supposed to wipe beforehand? The reason i ask is because this is my 2nd rom and my battery issue still seems to be there. I tried other methods of fixing hte battery but nothign seems to work. When i looked into root explorer, i see that there are a lot more files now everywhere, than when i first started. would some of them be from my previous rom? if so how do i remove them?
OK fellas, I have a brand new Captivate. Build is 1102. The phone shipped with 2.2. I bricked the first one so bad I had no choice but to replace it. The second one was almost to that point before I got Odin 3-click to get back to stock 2.1 update 1. Now I'm trying to get back to stock 2.2 and I can't seem to find anything relating on how to do that from my situation. I have literally been up for 38 hours working on this. Took me the first 24 just to get 2.1 on it. I am really stuck here. If anyone has a tool, or a guide, or a hint or a .9mm that can get 2.2 on my phone, please throw me a freaking bone...
Thanks in advance
up for 36 hours isnt going to help.
go get some sleep. come back later.
wait...
you are on your 3rd cappy and still dont know what to do?
Wait so it came with 2.2 you used odin to go to 2.1 and now you wanna go back to where you started?
Ummm ... have you tried kies mini?
When I couldn't use Kies Mini to update my phone from Eclair, I used ODIN 3 (not one click) to upgrade to Froyo - using the image found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11526718&postcount=1
My build is 1011

Im on my second Captivate. I was actually able to bring it back from brick by building a jig.
@studacris::: It came with 2.2, i flashed a custom rom which was giving me problems, tried flashing back and it failed leaving me with a brick. Built a jig and flashed odin 3-click which put 2.1 on it. I tried to use mini kies but it says my phones firmware is unregistered and will not let me update it...

turn on usb debugging before you connect it to kies
i have not tried the following link but I saved the file just in case I needed it. According to the post that I download the file from, it said its supposed to take you back to JI6:
download here
just be careful because I did not test this file myself
Use the jf6(2.1) odin one click and then there is a file you can use in the odin standalone to get you to kb1(2.2).

Please push *2767*4387264636# or download SGS Tools and select the second option in the Secret Codes section. This will output your product code. If it says anything other than SGH-I897ZKAATT, your product code has probably been tainted, which causes the Kies "unregistered device" error.
The reason this always happened for me is that the product code was changed by the custom ROM. If you do not have a backup of your EFS partition, then correcting this will require a hex editor. I used the method described here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223 . Messing around with EFS is inadvisable unless you know perfectly what you are doing. (Trust me on this as Sammy has my first phone for this reason alone.) It wont hurt anything to have an incorrect product code, aside from not being able to update to new software through Kies, but if you mess up anything inside of the file that is edited during the process in the forum link listed above, your radio firmware won't know what its own IMEI is. This can cause your phone to stop functioning as a phone.
The first thing that you should do before flashing any ROM is to backup EFS. There is a method for that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914 . I backed up EFS using every backup method described there (there are two or three I think), then I copied those backups to every thumb drive and storage device I have. I always have restored using the "tarball" method and have used Kies to get back to 2.2 about 20 times without the "unregistered device" issue.
So the most important question is - Do you have a backup of your EFS? (please say yes) If so, then it is just as simple as restoring EFS.
Another possibility if your redneck.nerdishness extends to Linux usage is to use Heimdall for your Froyo upgrade. I used that on my phone when Kies mini was failing on me. Search for Heimdall in the Captivate and standard Galaxy S forums, then follow the instructions to use it with the stock update.zip file linked in the forums.
Guys please forgive the newb question but I need to know the easiest way to do this without bricking my fathers phone.
Last week I flashed his stock Froyo phone to the leaked Gingerbread 2.3.6 version for his SG4G. He is not happy at all with the wifi and wanted to go back to the stock TMobile Froyo. I didnt want to attempt that, but now see that Samsung/TMob have the KJ6 Official release available. I want to know how can I flash this rom to his phone? Will mini Kies see his phone when I plug it in and recognize there is an upgrade available? Or is there a way to use Odin and load the official version of the rom to the phone? I really appreciate any direction you guys can provide me.
Thx
Ken

Ken,
* You would have to flash back to KD1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063696) to get Kies to see the phone as a registered device. Thanks to Whitehawkx for that.
* ODIN can be used, too, thanks to RaverX3X. He created a version of stock KJ6 for ODIN for people having issues with Kies (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353176)
Hope that helps.
First of all, I would like to apologize for the following flame and trolling. Why, why won't people FU**ING READ!? It ain't that hard! They teach you how to do that since Kindergarten! WTF?!?!?!?! OMFG!!! This has been answered only 100 times per day since source release and 2092189348093284323932873478893221 times since Raver made an Odin version. Now.........................
Go to Raver 2.3.6 KJ6 Odin in dev section. DL and flash through Odin (simple, put phone in dl mode, plug in computer, open odin, load rom file in pda after you extract it from zip, flash... done!). If you want cwm, flash KJ1 kernel from drhonk. Put zipped .tar file in pda section too... well, you gotta' know how Odin works. Same as I explained above, but with different file. Now you have official KJ6, which is same as leaked, with KJ1 (root, cwm). Not responsible for any bricks. This is what I did and worked.
Theres also a CWM version so if you prefer you can use the cwm method. Download rom zip, put in sd card, go to cwm, flash, wait, done. But I think you will have to flash Kj1 kernel to have root and remember to disable voodoo/etx4.
*Before flashing kj6, disable voodoo/ext4.

Well Chris, I wish we all were as smart as you with these phones. When I see a Q/A section in a Forum, I see it as just that. I dont care if the same question gets asked 5000000 times and you shouldnt either as long as its asked in the correct area in the forum, so flame away. Im not a developer, so I stay away from that area unless directed. FYI, just prior to your response I saw Stephens response and ventured into the developer area and found the Odin ver. of KJ6 to which I thank RaverX for and Stephen for pointing a "newb" in the right direction.
Sorry I put you out Chris for asking a question in the Q/A section of the forums....
Thanks to all for your support.
no the cwm version is pre rooted just the kernel is not ...
I'm not smart. Ask, Raver. Although the flame, I apologized and helped. Got it working?

Thanks again!
Chris calm down. Holy crap.
Desert, let me know if you have any more questions. Be sure to do a quick search prior to creating a new thread, but since this one is already created, that point is moot. Pm me if i don't respond. I've been super busy. Also i won't have an sgs4g for a while...I'm on a vibrant right now.

Question regarding Odin 3.07 and CWM v6
I rooted my S3 2 days ago via Odin. Last night I tried to flash CM10 and ended up with the "Please report to the principals office" message from Verizon. I was able to Odin back to the stock root, reload recovery, and get back to normal. Lesson learned! Double check everything, then flash!
It got me thinking however, If I copy my recovery files to the desktop, if that were to happen again, can I just flash a recovery file through Odin and get right back to before the brick? Yes, No? (And if you dont mind taking a second, Why? for learning purposes)
I am very very new at this. I have been flashing my A500 tab for about a year but out of 3 Android phones this is the first I have ever rooted.
Thanks for any and all advice.

You go me thinking and wondering the same thing. First, I think flashing anything other then the stock image trips the counter on the phone. Second, the only thing that pops up in pda mode is the md5 file called nandroid and im not sure if that file would push the rest of the backup images?
So far what I do KNOW is you could save the files on you computer (before you have a problem, of course), later on when you soft brick the device -> flash with odin the stock image, root phone (using gs3-debugfs-root_r2 is the easiest way to root IMO), flash CWM and then push the folder back into clockwork mod! not too much touble to do it that way just takes some time.
that's pretty much what I did.
