Unfortunately, I've encountered a hardware defect on my phone...
...the dreaded power button is getting stuck and becoming virtually unusable. The VZW Tech Support is sending me a CLNR device which should be here on Friday. (Apparently, they got rid of free overnight shipping.)
I'm unrooting tonight so I can play around with the new OTA over the next couple of days.
Is there anything I need to do to the phone other than un-root it so that VZW doesn't know it was rooted, thereby avoiding any future headaches and $299 charges.
Thanks!
Drew
Just to remember to remove your sd card before sending it back. If left in by accident they can tell some of what you have been doing with your phone.

Oh yeah. That for me was a given. lol
I'm removing the SIM, SD card, battery and back battery cover.
If that's it then I should be set. Just trying to cover all of my bases. ya know?

Just make sure to follow the unroot process in the dev forums so you put your phone back to "stock". You want to make sure its back to "S-ON" but that's about it.

Thanks but this is not my first time un-rooting my phone. I got that part covered. Installing the official OTA now.
Good Lord it takes forever over 3G. lol

You asked
Hope your new phone is better in regards to the power button issue. Mine seems to be OK... Except I keep finding its randomly shut itself off. If its not one thing its something else I guess lol

When your next phone arrives, consider using quickboot to restart/turn off the phone. Might help prevent you from going thru the same ordeal again.

Actually just got the new phone today and rooted it this evening. Everything works perfectly fine and the power button actually presses down now. lol
The only annoyance is that the speaker seems to crackle if above more than 1/2 volume. Thankfully, I can hear just fine if below that. But if it becomes too bad, I'll have to do another swap.

Curious as to why you would bother unrooting software when hardware is the issue? Here's why I ask.
I buy all of my companies pcs and cell phones. If I wipe MSCRAP7 off the machine and it has a MB failure and I call the mfg and they send a new one i don't restore back to 7 why would you on the phone?

Because rooting voids your warranty...

Because if I don't, theres a strong risk I'll have to pay full retail for this replacement even though rooting didn't cause the hardware failure.
I'm guessing you're not rooted...

Thinking of getting a warranty on my phone, They told me it would cost me 20 dollars, and that I wouldnt be getting a "New" one it would be "Refurbished", I'm alittle outraged by that.. considering I signed on for another 2 years and bought the phone for $265.00.. My power button is sticking and I can't stand it.. is their anything I can do to fix this? The phone works just fine.. Minus the power button..

If its the power button, call HTC and get a new back cover. Tell them about the power button problem and they will send you a back cover free. You can get a 1 time replacement part on every part of our phone from them.

It's worth a try. And if it doesn't solve the problem, you will have a spare (if they don't request your cc number/send your old cover back)

I just opened up my phone to make sure and the power button is part of the back cover. I think it would fix your problem.

Alright cool, cause from what i see it's attached to the backpanel, maybe some junk got in there, I've tried locking the phone without the panel and it works fine, so it must be the backpanel

Try calling again you might get a different person. Tell them you can't be without your phone, you use it for buisness. If they still insist on you sending your cover first just keep arguing but don't be a **** lol.

That was before someone reported it to HTC as fraud. A bunch of users got one for no reason and someone decided to just tell HTC about it.

How about your parents, or get a pre paid credit card and use that.
yep, after everyone found out you could get a free replacement people were calling HTC to get one even though they didn't need it. Now HTC requires you to put a CC on hold & send in your old one.
Ok so I went and turned on my G2x and I was using it normally. I needed to raise the media volume since I was watching a video on youtube. Nothing happened when I pressed both volume buttons. I tried everything, pressing the buttons harder, I even let the phone open without the back cover to dry, in case it was water causing the problem. Sometimes if I'm lucky, the up button might work if i press it extremely hard. I can't even get into clockworkmod recovery because the volume buttons don't work. I can't put it in download mode either.
Is there any way to fix it myself? BTW I have stock rooted 2.3.4 GB rom. Also my carrier is Wind. Do I have to go into a warranty centre?
Also, I have 2 small marks on my phone's edge when I dropped it once. Will that stop me from getting a replacement?

Darn... I've been with Wind for 4 months now. If I have to pay for my phone to get repaired, I'd rather not. Pay MORE money for an EOL'd phone, so I can use it again?
Although, I've been with Wind for 4 months now, am I able to pay off the Windtab and get an upgrade?

Well, the top button works ok. The bottom one doesn't make a good clicking sound and seems to stay almost sideways. It needs to be pressed hard in order to work.

Maybe you can use Button Saviour (Root) to substitute screen buttons for the mechanical buttons. Search for Button Saviour in Google Play.
Change spelling to Button Savior in your search.

Pay for the Pro version ($1.99) which enables customizing and you can use screen buttons to control volume up and down.

If your phone is not more than a year old, it is covered by warranty. I don't think a few scratches on the side will void your warranty. It can get scratched from keys in the same pocket as the phone. Dents may also be acceptable as long as the nothing is broken such as the circuit boards.
Ok thanks. I'll see if they accept my phone for repairs.

Good to hear man.
Oddly enough, I was having a power button issue as well. Acted like it was being pressed down at random times. But I fixed it myself.
Wonder if the power button thing is widespread, or just an isolated flaw.

I have searched and it appears to be. Not a big deal but I wanted to get it taken care of while I am within my 14 day period so that I don't get stuck w a crap refurb! See you around the forums. :good:
Got it..
I'll be using my phone and sometimes, it'll just shutoff as if you were to press and hold the power button to force it to reboot.
I'm on the stock ROM and just reflashed the latest image and its still doing it, is my power button faulty?
It could be a power button issue, but typically when I get this issue with the power button the phone won't be able to boot back up properly unless I intervene (i.e. flick the power button).

Edit ; same thing they're telling me out of warranty, LG wants $50 to replace it.. i'll check local shops now

50$ sounds about right. The part itself (replacement) is only about 1.5$ on ebay, but it is soldiered to the board. Here you can see the work involved: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzRDnrwl9Tk

You have to add your shipping cost to the seller. How much will that save you? And what if your phone is lost on the way back? Not worth it in my book...
