[Q] Unrooting Before Shipping Back to VZW - Thunderbolt General

Unfortunately, I've encountered a hardware defect on my phone...
...the dreaded power button is getting stuck and becoming virtually unusable. The VZW Tech Support is sending me a CLNR device which should be here on Friday. (Apparently, they got rid of free overnight shipping.)
I'm unrooting tonight so I can play around with the new OTA over the next couple of days.
Is there anything I need to do to the phone other than un-root it so that VZW doesn't know it was rooted, thereby avoiding any future headaches and $299 charges.
Thanks!
Drew

Just to remember to remove your sd card before sending it back. If left in by accident they can tell some of what you have been doing with your phone.

Oh yeah. That for me was a given. lol
I'm removing the SIM, SD card, battery and back battery cover.
If that's it then I should be set. Just trying to cover all of my bases. ya know?

Just make sure to follow the unroot process in the dev forums so you put your phone back to "stock". You want to make sure its back to "S-ON" but that's about it.

Hope your new phone is better in regards to the power button issue. Mine seems to be OK... Except I keep finding its randomly shut itself off. If its not one thing its something else I guess lol

When your next phone arrives, consider using quickboot to restart/turn off the phone. Might help prevent you from going thru the same ordeal again.

Actually just got the new phone today and rooted it this evening. Everything works perfectly fine and the power button actually presses down now. lol
The only annoyance is that the speaker seems to crackle if above more than 1/2 volume. Thankfully, I can hear just fine if below that. But if it becomes too bad, I'll have to do another swap.

Curious as to why you would bother unrooting software when hardware is the issue? Here's why I ask.
I buy all of my companies pcs and cell phones. If I wipe MSCRAP7 off the machine and it has a MB failure and I call the mfg and they send a new one i don't restore back to 7 why would you on the phone?

Because if I don't, theres a strong risk I'll have to pay full retail for this replacement even though rooting didn't cause the hardware failure.
I'm guessing you're not rooted...

[Q] RIP HTC Inspire 4G (2/13/11-3/4/11)

So I was forced to execute my Inspire today. It was rooted, I've tried different roms/radios, flashed rooted stock rom/stock rom. It was never reliable: always dropping service, not receiving/making calls at random times, mms unreliable. I took it back to best buy to try to get it exchanged for a new one. Of course the phone was working flawlessly when I got to the store. The good news is that I had purchased the best buy protection plan for it at $10/month. I had enough of the phone not working reliably for its intended purpose and had to smash it in order to get a new unit. I went back to best buy and turned in the broken phone, and after more than a few suspicious looks from workers-got my phone sent in for repair. Of course it's not going to be repairable (I hit it with my baton , which crushed the screen and phone in the middle), so now I wait a few weeks for my new unit.
My question is, should I cancel my ATT contract and go with a different provider. I loved the actual phone, I just think the ATT "4G" service is horribly unreliable in my area. Or, are there any good Android 3G phones for ATT?
BTW, I am coming from an iPhone 4 before i got the HTC Inspire. iPhone worked awesome, I'm just tired of Apple products.
You can exchange/return your phone within 30 days so why the hell did you "smash" it?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
If you were within the 30 days you had every right to just return it just because you wanted to.

I LOL'd when I read that
In my opinion, you have the best android phone AT&T has to offer...and on this thread? I think a lot of people will think the same thing. A lot of us inspire owners are previous captivate owners! That phone REQUIRED tweaking to get it to work smoothly (and for me, to get gps to work)
You could get the atrix, but there's not much tweaking/modding/flashing you can do with it due to a signed bootloader.
yeah, smashing it was a stupid thing to do.
cancelling your at&t contract will cost you a lot of money.
LOL, its crazy that someone has to go to those lenths to return a phone, but its true especially at stores like bestbuy its like ok so u want me to go in parking lot and run over it with my car a few times? then you will exchange it? and if u didnt have a problem with it why would u want a new one? Funny the smashing with baton part though.
^ he said, he was having problems.
i agree with others, you had 30 days to return it, i don't understand why you didn't just do that, and get another phone.

yea, $10 a month is nuts, i only paid $50 for the entire phone!
I don't think any of your understood, lol. Best Buy refused to take it back because it was working fine in front of them. And I did literally say to the kid working there, "So if I take it out in the parking lot and run it over with my truck, you guys will take it back?" He replied, "Do what you gotta do, if you come in tomorrow with a broken phone I'll act like I didn't see you come in today."
BTW I paid full price for the phone ($450ish).
You can return it for ANY reason within 30 days. Doesn't have to be broken.

What would ruin your warranty? A non-visible "unknown sources" that ATT actually allows now anyway?
Or s-Off @ hboot?
Or superuser?
Or a non-stock ROM?

Very high battery draw/camera issues

So a few days ago I checked my phone at work, had been off the charger for 4 hours not used at all and it was dead. Battery draw was ~300ma the whole time. The next day I noticed my camera wasn't working. Ill get an error message(activity camera not responding). Sometimes ill attempt to open the app and nothing will happen. This was all on gingerbeast. So I wiped all data and reflashed GB. Camera still doesn't work and battery draw is insane. I've since tryed AR, virtuous and cm7. For the record I've wiped battery stats, tryed without SD and sim card. I've been unable to find the cause of the high draw, although I think its related to the camera. Tomorrow I'm going to try and unroot and return to fully stock. Sorry for the long post any help is appreciated.

If your camera isn't working on any freshly installed ROMs, you probably have a hardware problem. As a last resort, try going back to the stock ROM. If your camera is still bad, then you'll need to do a warranty exchange with AT&T. The camera issues may very well be causing your high battery drain.

From what I recall, the inspire is about 20 times harder to replace the screen/digitizer, because the thing it honestly slapped together.
@ OP Sad part is if you do wish to repair it your probably going to have to go through HTC as I had some lengthy conversations with ATT and had to threaten to cancel and report them to the BBB on face book before anyone actually wanted to help me. MY phone was to the point where the bottom right of the screen had lifted and I could press on the bottom center and here clicking noises.
Edit: Try downloading watch dog lite to see if any apps are causing the battery draw before you unroot, a little troubleshooting can go a long way .

Warranty exchange question

Okay so I was on Synergy 1.7 and Beans and I had GPS issues. The GPS would never lock on. I turned on Navigation and it would stay stuck on "searching for GPS". I Odined back to stock and same issue. So now I'm thinking I need to exchange it. Two questions tho.
1) will I need to contact Verizon or Samsung for the exchange?
2) I got this from a trade here in XDA. Will this affect me getting an exchange?
Thanks in advance

Well you can take it in to Verizon but I don't think they would exchange it, especially if you bought/traded/etc it from a third party. In my experience they would just claim it was abused or messed with by you or previous owner and offer to "fix" it for a price.
1. Verizon
2. I can't say.
Before you call up Verizon, though, I recommend you search the Synergy thread for a GPS fix. I remember someone working it all out, though I don't recall the specifics. I figure you'd rather go through that than swap devices.

As long as you didn't get it from them, they will most likely give you a hard time about exchanging it because if not from Verizon, you had to get it from a third party used :/

Hey Jay,
I have actually done manufacturers warranty claims on phones that I have purchased through a 3rd party (eBay) a few times with Verizon. I don't offer up where I got the phone, but they don't generally ask either (in my experience). The phone should still be covered under the 1 year warranty with Samsung, Verizon just honors that warranty for you and ships out a different refurbished phone in its place. As long as you put a stock image back on your original phone before sending it back in you shouldn't have any problems.
Also, I usually tell them right up front that I "went into a store and worked with their tech support people who gave me this number to call to get a replacement phone. Already did 2 factory resets and checked that I had the latest software update and it didn't help at all." That usually helps to bypass all of the generic tech support questions that they ask and just get down to getting your new phone.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Thank you so much. I'll try this out after I try a few other things to try to get my GPS to work. I'm currently completely stock so I'm hoping I find a way. So they send you the refurb phone and they give you like a box to send it back like Asurion does with insurance claims?

Yes, they send you a refurb phone and you keep your original battery, battery cover, sim, and SD Card. Then place the old phone back in the box and affix the return tag that was included with the replacement phone. It's super easy.

Yea, that is how Verizon handles it.
Does anyone know how Samsung would handle it if you try to go through them like the other guy suggested? I'm in the same boat and would rather return to Samsung than Verizon (I hate that Verizon gives me a used phone in exchange for a phone that I paid full price for and bought new). I feel like Samsung would want me to send the phone back to them first, which I cant really do because I need my phone and don't want to activate an older phone and lose my unlimited data.

Why would this happen all at once?

So outta nowhere my headset speakers fail to work. I can't hear anything in a call unless I'm on speaker phone. The keys on my keyboard won't light. And the notification led doesn't light up for text or when charging anymore. I was running newsense and switched to a different rom to see if that was the problem but it wasn't.

Do an RUU back to stock (don't do the OTA), if that doesn't work it is a hardware issue. All those problems at once? Sounds like it got wet, not saying it did, but you don't usually see that many problems pop at once without something major happening. Good luck.

I had 3 shifts ear pieces all go out the same day. All had different owners across 2 accounts. So yeah that was the end of dealing with sprint lol

My speedy has taken serious beatings throughout this year I've had it lol The only thing wrong with it was a wonky flex cable like 2 weeks ago, but other than that everything works like brand new.

I'm not as fortunate, I also have a dead spot on the top quarter of my screen and it is getting annoying rotating my screen all the time to use the basic functions of my phone, nothing against the Shift at all but I can't wait to upgrade.

So are you saying try unrooting an re rooting again? Just wanted to make sure that's what you're saying first. And no, its hasn't been near water and I have the ottetbox case on it. This is my original shift btw, bought brand new with contract 14 months ago. Also just wanted to add, that even though the keyboard keys don't light, my shift and fn lights still work.
edit
Anyone have a different link to the ruu file? I keep getting redirected to this "Internet vs. Hollywood" crap site.. >.<

Sounds like you'll have to take it back, It's not a software issue if the RUU didn't fix it.

I have had the same issue happen to me, for some reason the Shift is a great water magnate they apparently found some " Moisture" Build up in mine, when they came to open it up during a repair, I would keep $100.00 USD On the side just in-case you have to file an insurance claim with asurion.
Ive tried to, Unroot and back to stock, ive tried rerooting .Re-Romming and Flashing the device,
a Majority of the time issues like that are caused by the wiring in the device "Moisture" Build up and or just cause the shift wants to be a little bonkers .
But then again if your not around it, you may just luck out and get a hardware defect claim and keep 100 bucks in your pocket and two days later you get a Refurbished device ^____^ yay for you.
I said it sounded like moisture lol:sly: Anyways, good luck... Shifts are dropping like flies round here.
Don't want to start new thread so. Will try posting this here. My shift's screen started going black whenever I open or close the keyboard. It happens whether I am in the OS, bootlader, or recovery, so idk if it is the ROM. Any ideas?

I've seen prboy post about this a ton of times but what he always suggests is to see if you hear sort of a crunching sound when you close/open the keyboard. If you do, its probably the flex cable and you can buy one and replace it yourself (if you want)
I believe you can also take it in to Sprint if its in fairly good condition and they will give you a new one no questions asked
You might wanna also take a look at the questions/posts HERE or HERE
EDIT: Just FYI, but the flex cable is what connects the keyboard to the touch screen

Yeah I have seen those posts too. Wasn't sure cause it isn't making any noise. Got this refurb after the last ota killed my phone. So its in great condition. Guess I'm unrooting and heading to sprint

There is a very good possibility that it could be the Flex Cable. But if you plan on taking it back to Sprint, RUU first. That way you kill two birds with one stone. You confirm the issue, and you prep it for going back to Sprint.

I have 2.3.4 ruu, can I just run that from s off or should I use sparksco's guide for unrooting? First rooted phone here
