[Q] why should i root my xoom? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With the zoom beingg fairly new but ota update two weeks ago I am wondering why should I root my zoom tablet. Does rooting do anything for me at this point being so early in the game?
I don't have anything I want to remove from the zoom. SD card working is just one reason. Isn't there anything else that rooting can do for me. I bought the qifi version because I use it to control my computers in my home. Phone SMS on it when mine is plugged in. I control my automated home with it through wifi connection to my computer but really what benifits does root haave right now??

Rooting now gives you access to a working SD card and CWM as well as some themeing.

Don't be a douche! Like this?
I used a new two gig Sandisk card and formatted it in my phone, then used the Gold Card Maker, and then used the Ace hack kit picking up on number two in the menu. This downgraded the rom and then you just forward thru setup and enable debugging again and run number three in the menu. This gives you root and s-off. Then you repeat enable debugging and go to the options menu and flash the stock radio. Once it reboots, you are ready to place your renamed rom on the root of the sd card and restart in bootloader and flash away. Don't forget to disconnect the usb cable after moving the rom to the sd card. After reboot you are home free. If you flash a custom rom, you may need to flash a new radio. The key is having a good gold card, turning off antivirus, and remembering to put the phone on charge only and enabling debugging before each step.

Not to be a jerk but if you can't even figure out how to root the phone using one of the easiest tools around then maybe its best you just leave it alone all together.

Reading stuff like this makes me ever more genuinely glad I don't care to root my Inspire. In my case I know that if it can mess up it will mess up. But the whole process seems so convoluted and messy. Using a "Goldcard" seems like a burden to me...like you have to carry around addition weight with you wherever you go just to have a rooted phone. It all seems so super-duper messy. That's the biggest turn-off for me...like I would be trying to make something work unnaturally...like this is something that isn't designed for the device...stuff like that. By the way, I know someone will misunderstand what I meant by "weight" so I will preempt them by saying I know there is no "weight"...lol
Im just trying to use the wifi hotspot without getting charged on my already unlimited data plan, do i even need to root to do that? besides i just wanna have it rooted but it keeps failing. ive done it like 4 times.

From what I've read in the past, AT&T detects tethering on rooted phones and will charge the specific account for the cost of the feature.

BTW the goldcard is not needed once you're done rooting. I haven't had a goldcard in my phone for months - it's the oiriginal 8GB that I keep it in my desk drawer should I ever need it again. Using a regular 32GB card now.
Rooting's not that hard but there is a small hurdle at first, but the rewards make it worthwhile. Some people prefer stock, some people like to tweak until the cows come home.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong for it to say model ID incorrect?

You can set up an apn that allows hotspot without a tethering plan.
Sent from the computer I carry in my pocket.
Tethering is usually free on rooted phones.
I'm pretty sure that AT&T doesn't do deep packet inspection on their traffic yet, so you should be able to easily get away with tethering as long as you don't have significantly higher data usage than usual.

[Q] someone give me a good reason Why I should root Galaxy Tab 2

Can someone give me a good reason Why I should root Galaxy Tab 2 ..?
I do not understand why everyone is getting crazy trying to root this tablet.
This tablet is perfect and I have it for 3 weeks and I haven't find anything annoying in the software that will make me change my mind to getting root on this tablet.
My main reason in rooting devices are to remove unwanted apps from my devices. But this tablet comes with the option to stop any unwanted apps and works perfect like the same way like titanium buckup does .. So were is the reason in getting root on this device ..?
Many people complaint about the screen shot button on the bar... I think this was one of the best idea from the developers in adding this option, because now I just can make notes in my tablet if someone calls by phone in less than one second withol out having to open another app or looking for a pen and paper something that will never find when I need it. This was the main purpose of the developer and I think is a shame that many people don't appreciate this option.
Plus everyone is having problems after rooting this device, also by experience in almost all the cases after rooting a device it always loose something or something never works, problems with GPS and Bluetooth, many bags and always have to be waiting for a new room update because the old one always have something wrong. Even the best rooms out there have bugs ...
WERE IS THE GOOD REASON IN ROOTING THIS DEVICE. ? I recommend people not to do it..
This is a nice tablet with a very good software, don't screw up the OS, if you want to delete some trash apps there is a option to stop them and they will disappear from the tablet.
The only thing that I really don't like about this tablet is the adapter to charge the tablet...! Many times I wanted to charge the tablet and I just can do it because I can't find the adapter.. Almost every android device comes with micro usb to charge and you can find micro usb cables in almost every house you go.. .. BUT this tablet just don't have it..! I'm been running away from apple devicesfor years because their stupid adapters and from their limitations... Now I have to deal with my own Android tablet and I'm facing the same stupid problem like all all apple fans do... One stupid adapter that nobody has to charge my tablet...! It SUCKS so bad....!
Note: This tablet has some bugs on the keyboard, but I think is because the so complicated coding from some websites with their pop up forms ,recatcha and stuff, and I just can find the automatic spelling on the keyboard.. Someone knows if there is one..?
I understand that samsung tryed to save money in making one adapter for everything, other than that I'm happy.
Also I'm very disappointed because Asus is coming out with a $250 Quad tablet that has all the missing features from this tablet , separated usb hdmi and charging plugs, better screen resolution and all that.. But they are taking way to long to send out to the public... I couldn't wait for Asus Memo... So sad.. I will have to deal a little. Unhappy with my samsung tab... But I know Samsung will learn from their mistakes and soon will realize that Asus can do the job better that Samsung... !

To improve the capabilities of usage, use apps that interact directly with system actions, titanium is just one of them, I have been using android for about 3 years now and in general, I wouldn't be able to do a lot of things without root (i.e. tasker actions to automatically control since when my home PC turns on, mute my cel while in a movie theatre, turn on BT while in car and connect to hands free device, etc).
Besides, if you follow the correct steps, it won't hurt and you can always get back to stock .
My 2 cents.

As others have mentioned Titanium Backup is extremely helpful for backing up your apps & data.
There may be pre-installed apps you don't use (Yahoo! or Netflix) that you can remove.
Other apps (such a Cerberus) have enhanced capabilities on a rooted device.
Personally I pretty much always wait a month after I get a new device before I root it but I will definitely be doing so on my Tab 2 7"

I think the more interesting question is why you as the sole owner of the device don't have root access by default? Its price wasn't subsidized by Amazon or AT&T (etc.) so why is Samsung prohibiting you from using YOUR device as you see fit?
In adition to all the other answers, mine is: Because you can. Thats part of the beauty of Android.

Does rooting have any effect on the inability to move apps to SD in the ICS versioon of the Galaxy Tab 2? Titanium Backup is a major good reason to root, but if ICS is not going to allow the SD storage to be used for apps, this tablet is pretty much an oversized iPod, suitable mainly for media. I'm looking for an Android tablet that can be more useful as a computer than media player where I can install 32GB of SD and put programs on it, as I can with my rooted Nook Color, which looks better and better all the time with its CM7 OS.

Select Toggle Signature Verification Option in CWM Recovery, then install the zip....this is because the zip needs to be signed by the maker to be used without signature verification....hope it works
I rooted mine because..
There are several good apps and utilities out there that require root access to work.
Build prop editor...you need root to write new values
Several VPN clients require root to properly set up more than basic vpn connections
of course Titanium backup
Any app that needs to modify root level system settings.
You don't have to flash any custom roms, you can root and stay on the ICS 4.0.4 (what came on my Tab 2 7"
When the time comes and Samsung releases JB for the US version of GT3113 I'll probably have to reflash back to stock to reset or go to the website and manually download it and flash. May lose my root, hopefully will be able to re-root.

Rooting with Mac Snow Leopard

I have not only searched this forum, but have searched everywhere that I could think of for an answer. I finally decided to root and unlock my bootloader. My biggest problem is this:
1. My Mac is running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). The required Java files that you have to download only work with 10.7 (Lion) and higher. I have not been able to find a work around for this yet. I prefer to use this method with Adam's Casuals software.
2. I also have a virtual machine with Windows 7. I finally got all of the drivers installed and tried Noxious Ninja's method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342 and that program just runs through without doing anything. I have verified that all files and drivers are installed and that the phone is actually connected to my virtual machine.
I really don't want to give Apple another penny of my money or I would go buy Lion upgrade. I also don't support pirating, so, that option is off of the table as well even though we are talking about the greediest, most evil company out there. I am seriously debating on selling my MacBook Pro and getting a PC at this point.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Apple is really greedy because their upgrades are $20 compared to $100 + windows upgrades. They are kinda greedy but its the same way bill gates got rich. Anyways i would just say update to Mtn Lion. Only $20 and works good. Rooted my phone with Casual on Mtn Lion.

Okay, I tried this and can't seem to get it to work either. It loads up fine but does not connect so I don't have the option to do anything else. I have checked and made sure that nothing else is running between the phone and computer. I was using Android File Transfer which was working very good, but turned it off and still no go. That lets me know that I do at least have a good connection between the Mac and S3.
Does anyone know of anything that I can try?
Nobody else has run into this problem? I have spent the better part of last night and this morning and still have not been able to find an answer. I just can't figure out why Android File Transfer will work perfectly and the Casual program will not even connect. I even double checked to make sure that my computer was up to date with software updates. The only thing that isn't up to date is obviously I am running Snow Leopard instead of Mountain Lion.

Is USB Debugging on in Developer Options and using the OEM USB cable?
Yes, my daughter came by with her PC and I rooted it without any issues. I would still like to know why I couldn't get those issues resolved.
Now, back to reading so I can back up my IMEI and figure out which ROM to flash! I am also thinking of flashing the newer radio to see if reception improves.

Glad you got it working, I would recommend Paranoid Android Rom for Stock it runs the smoothest i think and you have the option of using tablet mode.
I ran into the same problem you ran into with Casual not seeing my phone but that was on Lion on my MBP. My iMac running Snow Leopard worked fine without any problems. I asked Adam about this and he said its an issue with the Apple hardware, some see the phones and some don't, it's hit or miss luckily for me one of my systems recognized the phone.
= sent from my Unlocked VZW S3 =
Okay, I found out the issue. Hopefully this will help someone else that has the same problem. The problem came from Easy Tether. I found a page after all of the digging that worked for me (couldn't get adb to work right either) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6026948/cant-find-android-device-using-adb-devices-command is the page that tells you how to disable it so that adb can communicate with it. I just backed up my IMEI with abd and am feeling pretty good!

[Q] Kyocera Event Virgin Mobile Question

Does anyone own this phone?
I may have to get one and was just wondering if its a decent phone or not.
Things are tough right now and I don't think we are going to be able to pay our Verizon bill and I may have to just go spend the $40 at walmart to pick this up
Anyone had any success rooting this phone? How about CWM?
Please let me know.
Thanks!
I have one and root is possible, but the bootloader is locked because virgin mobile is bein stupid so cwm is out of the question so if u get one and root it be careful. I suggest a different carrier like at&t Go Phone

Just bought this phone a few days ago from amazon. I got it to replace a Kyocera Rise that I unceremoniously managed to boot loop when I went NUTS with checking too many options using the Pimp My ROM app. I nearly had that one for a year, so in a way, not a big loss for me, as I paid around $50 for the Event (incl. one day shipping).
I haven't activated the phone yet, but doing everything else on it seems to be all right. I've tested a couple of 3D games on it already: Temple Run 2, and Raging Thunder. Seems to run both fine, with only a tiny bit of lag on TR2. That can be improved once the phone is rooted. For now, I'm using my older, rooted LG Optimus V as my cell phone. I'll probably load a couple of benchmark apps to see how the phone holds up.
I loaded a full MP4 movie (rip from DVD) onto the Event to test 2D video.
The Event has about 1.2 GB of internal storage available, but the more important issue is the system RAM. It has 360 MB available out of 512 MB. That's only 3 MB more than the Rise... aack! But that can be improved upon once the thing's rooted. Ordered a case + screen protector for the Event earlier this morning... as soon as that arrives, I'll have the phone activated. Then I'll root it. I might skip out on doing any big fixes on this one. The main issue I had with the Rise anyway was with the wifi reception. It seems to be much better with the Event, from my own usage. Also, the cell phone signal bars seem to light up higher with the Event, so I shouldn't have too many problems with phone calls and texts. That usually means better 3G reception as well.
When this phone's rooted, these are the only fixes I'd do to it:
1. Editing the /system/lib/egl/egl.cfg file. Back up the original, name it egl.cfg.bak, then edit the original like this:
0 1 adreno200
# 0 0 libEGL
It looks something like that, but basically, put hashtags on the other lines to uncomment, or delete them. That fix enables the Event to use only the hardware drivers for 2D and 3D full time. Makes a huge difference in phone performance. Edit the permissions first, from r-- to rw- before editing the file. Once it's saved, put the permissions back to r--, then reboot. If you don't do this, the phone may boot loop!
2. Titanium Backup. This can backup all the apps on the phone, including some system apps. TB can be used to freeze unwanted apps as well. Some folks suggest uninstalling the bloatware, but I wouldn't do it, in case the phone gets a system update. Freezing should be fine.
3. Link2SD. This is essential if you want to free up space in internal storage. I use this to link any app that can't be installed to the SD card. It requires a second partition; I used FAT32 (2 GB partition) with the Rise, as it didn't have a custom ROM that had the ext4 modules. This will probably be the same for the Event. When formatting the SD card for this, make sure that the main partition that the phone reads upon booting has the boot and lba flags checked. I use gparted in Linux to partition and format SD cards
4. Greenify. This allows apps to hibernate when the phone is idle. It even hibernates some apps while you're using the phone, saving you some memory and CPU cycles. That can help save some battery power.
For now, I'm using Advanced Task Killer to maintain some free memory and help reduce unwanted CPU cycles. Green Power Premium cuts off the 3G/WiFi when the phone is idle. ATK kills apps, but I set it to work every two hours. That lets the phone do its memory tasks, while ATK kills the more stubborn apps (mostly the bloatware I don't use).
Hope that helps you out, and good luck.
Thanks for the input guys.

I got this phone for $20 at Walmart's Black Friday sale. For that price who could pass up Android 4.0x? Despite its apparent lower quality, I am quite pleased with its overall performance and the virtual keyboard, surprisingly, works better than a many other phones I have tried.
permission question
Hey all,Ive never messed with changing permissions,I have an Event and Im wonder ing when I open the permission page with root explorer it reads like this
READ WRITE EX
OWN X X
GROUP X
GLOBAL
In the post it says "from r-- to rw- before editing the file" Dopes this mean OWN has 1 X,GROUP has 2 X,and GLOBAL is blank correct? Then edit file and change to how it was in the begining? Thanks alot!!!!
Sorry to rehash and old thread but this one seemed to fit the best to what I am experiencing and what I'd like to ask.
I have owned this phone a little over 3 months now, switching from LG Optimus V, I have some grief from the day one.
First and foremost, it is very unstable. On the average, I have to hard reset it once a day, most of the time, more than just once. And when I say Hard Reset, I mean holding the power button down forever for the phone to reboot as the screen doesn't show anything. A few times, I went as far as removing the battery.
Question 1. I looked around hard and I didn't see any custom ROMs or any custom recovery modules, likes of clockwork. Am I missing something ?
My main concern was the ability of running FoxFi and as expected, it did not run on this one. So, I took the advie of some guys over at the android forums and loaded up poot to root it. It seems to have no problems with rooting. But afterwards, I have tried few hotspot apps and never been able to turn on this fjunctionality. I know the apps I chose required root access and I turned it on before starting the app, but nada...
Question 2. How can I get either FoxFi working on this thing ? Or short of it, how can I make any (suggestions welcome) WiFi hotspot app working with it ?
Thanks in advance

Yes I own a virgin mobile kyocera event and sucessfully rooted device with no problems at all. The process is much more simplified now than it was when I rooted, so lucky you And your going to want TWRP so you can use the recovery stored on SD if you do come across and bootloop or brick issues. Its worth the $30 I spent It's not the best by far, but its really pretty capable once rooted. Much better than I had expected. I hope I was of help to you, and if u decide to buy it and need help rooting I'm down.

[Q] Rooted stock One MIni - Free hotspot?

Ok, I hate to post this, but I can't seem to find any posts on this. I have My HTC 1 mini rooted with cwm recovery flashed. I want to use my phone as a hotspot (without paying At&t) without flashing a custom rom. I like the stock rom and don't have any reason to flash cyanogen or anything else available. So,.... Can anyone help or direct me in the right place to get rid of the At&t big brother crap so I can use my phone as a hotspot for free?
I'm in the same boat as you, except I'm not even using the phone on AT&T, I'm thinking of updating to the international 4.3 release, however my wife doesn't want to lose all her settings and have to restore everything just to be able to use this feature.....
You can always use a 3rd party app such as tether (doesn't do wifi i dont think..) however i beleive the wifi ones are pay apps
teahering sux.

Tethering sux. Especially when using my tablet or when trying to have someone else connect. I used it all the time with my pos LG nitro HD. The phone is capable of doing it just not without [email protected] punk butts trying to charge for it. There has to be a software/app that be removed or something simple. I just don't want to remove something wrong and have to flash my back up. Pain the the u know. Pdanet was the best Coe tethering in my experience btw. I hate wires.
S-off
So I'm gathering that S-off has to be done in order to get free wifi with stock rom. in this tutorial http://htconeroot.com/htc-one-tutorials/how-to-get-s-off-on-htc-one/ I was able to get S-off. In the tutorial it states you have to disable fastboot. I tired it twice and it failed. I then enabled fastboot through the power menu at the bottom, and it worked like a charm. I had to enable fastboot to root my One mini as well. Both tutorials expressed that fastboot had to be disabled. Not in my case. So,... (at your own risk) if you have have problem with rooting and getting S-off, enable fastboot. Not I need to find out what all factory installed apps I can remove without bricking my phone. If anyone knows all or at least some of the apps/bloatware, please list.

That's a great question. I believe that if you root the device (and possibly S-off) then you can use any hotspot app for free. I'm using this on the T-mobile network and cannot find a work-around without Root. I plan to root one day, but have just been too busy to sit down and go through all the steps.
Nope. Not with the AT&T version

I rooted, I got S-off and still no free wifi hotspot. Furthermore, Whenever It root uninstalled all those AT&T app, when I rebooted they would be back. I tried every root uninstaller on the play sotre with a four start rating or better. I wanted JB 4.3 and sense 5.5 so I got that S. I copied that resolution below. Now I have free wifi. Thanx though.
I used the script SuperWipe_M4_xpirt.zip to completely clean my Phone because after I copied to my pc then deleted all my titanium back up media and DCIM my sdcard only had 1.4gb in on it. On the device all those files still showed under my legacy and /0 folder and I found a third under storage in the device. This is something funky. So after the SuperWipre Script from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2423576 I then flashed 4.3 sense 5.5 from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2575766 and now I have 11 gb on my phone. I will pay more attention to my storage when installing and changing things so I can see what, where, and/or how that happened. I have never encountered something like this before, nevertheless, i have never settle for a phone without external storage either. I wont ever do that again. But for a free phone plus a $56 credit to my account, I can't complain too much. Just a little. The One Mini is way better than the crappy lame POS LG Nitro HD .
