[Q] Rooted stock One MIni - Free hotspot? - HTC One Mini

Ok, I hate to post this, but I can't seem to find any posts on this. I have My HTC 1 mini rooted with cwm recovery flashed. I want to use my phone as a hotspot (without paying At&t) without flashing a custom rom. I like the stock rom and don't have any reason to flash cyanogen or anything else available. So,.... Can anyone help or direct me in the right place to get rid of the At&t big brother crap so I can use my phone as a hotspot for free?

I'm in the same boat as you, except I'm not even using the phone on AT&T, I'm thinking of updating to the international 4.3 release, however my wife doesn't want to lose all her settings and have to restore everything just to be able to use this feature.....
You can always use a 3rd party app such as tether (doesn't do wifi i dont think..) however i beleive the wifi ones are pay apps

teahering sux.

Tethering sux. Especially when using my tablet or when trying to have someone else connect. I used it all the time with my pos LG nitro HD. The phone is capable of doing it just not without [email protected] punk butts trying to charge for it. There has to be a software/app that be removed or something simple. I just don't want to remove something wrong and have to flash my back up. Pain the the u know. Pdanet was the best Coe tethering in my experience btw. I hate wires.

S-off
So I'm gathering that S-off has to be done in order to get free wifi with stock rom. in this tutorial http://htconeroot.com/htc-one-tutorials/how-to-get-s-off-on-htc-one/ I was able to get S-off. In the tutorial it states you have to disable fastboot. I tired it twice and it failed. I then enabled fastboot through the power menu at the bottom, and it worked like a charm. I had to enable fastboot to root my One mini as well. Both tutorials expressed that fastboot had to be disabled. Not in my case. So,... (at your own risk) if you have have problem with rooting and getting S-off, enable fastboot. Not I need to find out what all factory installed apps I can remove without bricking my phone. If anyone knows all or at least some of the apps/bloatware, please list.

That's a great question. I believe that if you root the device (and possibly S-off) then you can use any hotspot app for free. I'm using this on the T-mobile network and cannot find a work-around without Root. I plan to root one day, but have just been too busy to sit down and go through all the steps.

Nope. Not with the AT&T version

I rooted, I got S-off and still no free wifi hotspot. Furthermore, Whenever It root uninstalled all those AT&T app, when I rebooted they would be back. I tried every root uninstaller on the play sotre with a four start rating or better. I wanted JB 4.3 and sense 5.5 so I got that S. I copied that resolution below. Now I have free wifi. Thanx though.
I used the script SuperWipe_M4_xpirt.zip to completely clean my Phone because after I copied to my pc then deleted all my titanium back up media and DCIM my sdcard only had 1.4gb in on it. On the device all those files still showed under my legacy and /0 folder and I found a third under storage in the device. This is something funky. So after the SuperWipre Script from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2423576 I then flashed 4.3 sense 5.5 from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2575766 and now I have 11 gb on my phone. I will pay more attention to my storage when installing and changing things so I can see what, where, and/or how that happened. I have never encountered something like this before, nevertheless, i have never settle for a phone without external storage either. I wont ever do that again. But for a free phone plus a $56 credit to my account, I can't complain too much. Just a little. The One Mini is way better than the crappy lame POS LG Nitro HD .

Flashing w/o the use of a PC

Is it possible with the Epic? My MicroUSB port is broken and I don't know how to flash the phone back to stock (removing root, restoring stock apps) and I've got limited time to do this before I can take the phone back to the Sprint store for replacement. I'm searching feverantly, but everything takes me to flashing using Odin, via USB to PC, etc. I just need to know if I can get a DG27 (that's what I'm still running) update.zip file put onto my SD card and let the phone flash itself via the stock recovery console. Can it be done?
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/and...-back-to-stock-without-usb/msg94685/#msg94685
Found this, but it's for the Moment and I'm running an Epic.
I have returned my phones to stock as well when dealing with warranty/insurance, but does it matter if you are having a hardware issue like that? Would they consider it a breach of contract or something?
Of course, if my phone sustained minimal damage and I needed to replace it, there's always totally breaking it...

Unfortunately, it sounds like you're sol... you could remove all the root stuff like superuser.apk, but you'd still have the recovery to deal with

Replacement
You should call your local rep and ask about the terms of exchange. I had a moment and exchanged for the epic and my rep said that software didn't matter. Basically, if it still looks new, they should take it. This is for the 30 day exchange. Are you getting it replaced or exchanging it?
I've tried to make "friends" with the people at the local Sprint stores for issues like this. Since I was about 2 weeks past my 30 exhange window, I got sent from the store that I purchased it from to another store that does more warranty work. Ends up the guy there is someone I had met before at a completely different store back when I had my Moment...nice guy, roots his phones, gave me tons of free paid apps, etc. In the end, apparently Sprint changed their warranty replacement program (again) and he was forced to charge me $35 I won't get the phone till midweek, but I'm justifying the costs in my head by talking with him since he's going to allow me to use some website he's payed onto to be able to download basically any paid app that I want when I return. That means no more Gameloft demos, backup apps, etc...now I get the best of the best.
For those wondering what happened to my phone, I did the Touchstone mod, and while it was working great for a while, apparently too much tension was on the + connection, so it broke right at the joint where the USB connector meets the board...no chance of me fixing that myself. Now my biggest problems are
1) That I'm still rooted, I did a factory wipe on the phone and completely forgot that I deleted a TON of stock apps, including the TW launcher. Once the phone finished it's own wiping, I now have no launcher, so unless someone calls/texts me, I have no phone usage.
2) Since the USB is broken, I don't have a way to charge the phone anymore...and these phones are battery hogs. I've replied on the Touchstone thread to see if I could still use the Touchstone and the battery cover, remove the battery from the phone and charge the battery directly. I know the inherent dangers of over charging, so my only goal is too keep enough of a random charge (maybe a few hours at a time) until the replacement phone arrives.
In the meantime though, I'd still like to see if there is a way to either flash the phone back to stock and/or get a launcher running on the phone again. I have NO launcher now, so hitting the home, menu, etc buttons does absolutely nothing.
Awesome this thread is now about warez

I don't use my PC when I flash my phone. I use the "ClockWork Mod" and its "ROM Manager" interface (from the market) and the XDA app from the market. Download the ROM's, kernels, and other tweaks through the xda app and flash them in clockwork mod.

I never installed the Clockwork Mod since it was still having issues with using QuickBoot and not going to recoverry like it was supposed to. I've been in no rush to custom ROM/Kernal this phone, so all I did was root it so I could delete a bunch of the stock apps.
I'm getting a replacement sent to me, should be here mid week. Once 2.2 comes, I'll be waiting for custom things then, but in the meantime, I'm far happier with this phone vs the Moment.
First thing you should -always- do is install clockwork.
The only reason why I didn't is because it doesn't work 100% with QuickBoot, but I guess in this situation I still could have manually gotten to recovery so I could have put a launcher back onto the phone and it wouldn't be a brick sitting on my desk right now. In an effort to preserve battery life, I only turn it on for about 5 minutes, a couple of times a day, to see what calls and texts I miss and then I return them all via my other phone.
My list of to-do's once I get my next phone:
Root (I just need to decide which version again, seems like there are a bunch and I don't know which is best/safest), not delete any apps until I know what I'm doing w/ this phone vs the Moment
Clockwork Revocery
Wifi tether
Launcher Pro
...and I'll probably leave it at that. It should come with DI18 already installed, but I don't want the phone giving me grief (like it did before trying to update since I'm still running DG27 but had a bunch of deleted stock apps) when the 2.2 update finally gets released. I can suffer with having 3 launchers and a bunch of useless Sprint apps for a while I guess

Download any rom of your choice place to rom on your sd card. Flash the rom threw CWM.
To put a rom on your sd card since you can't connect your phone to the computer you remove the micro sd card. Your phone should have came with an adapter. Place the adapter with the micro sd card I'm any thing that can read the card if you don't have a card reader on your pc. Place the rom on your sd card install back in your phone the flash

The only problem with that is I've already said more than once that I don't have CWM installed, I've only got the stock recovery. I explained in the post above when I never got around to installing CWM. My phone is only rooted and running one of Noobnl's kernals, deleted a bunch of stock apps (including TW, hence my problem) and nothing more.
If your still rooted, you can try downloading rom manager and using it to download and install clockwork.

Fortunately I was able to get a new phone from Sprint. It cost me $35, which ironically is the same price as the Media Dock I should have just gotten instead of trying to do the Touchstone, which is what broke my phone in the first place.

Root or what for my situation?

I have unlimited data plan through grandfathers option which I don't want to let go of ,so there seems to be no option for tethering.I had a captivate previously but someone liberated it the other day.I bought the Inspire thinking that since it was froyo 2.2 I would be golden for hot spot which is how we get our net access these days and it has been great.I have noticed lots of folks having problems rooting, and those who are able to are losing their sound. Is there an app that will work similar to
" mywi " that the iPhone uses? I sure don't want to give up my unlimited data,is there anything besides a custom Rom I can do,and will rooting allow me to enable the hotspot feature?I have modded all kinds of phones, game, consoles ,and I am comfortable rooting this thing if it will get me running again. Thanks in advance for any answers or suggestions anyone may have. I sure do like this phone,it is way faster at everything than the Captivate and I have only had it a day.thanks,Vegas

I would say root it and flash android revolution, mainly cause its stock sense and all the features your looking for are enabled after flashing this rom, including the sound thing. Rooting isnt as easy as it was on captivate, but if u follow the video tutorial you shouldnt have any problems. I have never rooted a htc device until i got the inspire, but i managed to get it done the first try with the youtube walkthrough.
So to sum up, root, install CWM, then flash custom rom of your choice. Then enjoy your amazing android device.

Have you seen this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960058) thread. Multiple users, including myself, have been able to get wifi tethering to work without Root. Simply adding a custom APN unlocks this ability
Previous to adding this APN, when I would launch Wi-Fi Hotspot I was greeted with a message that I do not have a plan that includes tethering. I added the APN and am now able to use this app without any problems. Note: Most of us had to reboot after adding the APN to get wifi tethering to stay on

[Q] Enable Tethering on AT&T HTC One X

Anyone with the AT&T HTC One X been able to find a way to enable tethering?
I know that Roger users get tethering enabled for free, unfortunately AT&T doesn't give us the same courtesy in the US.
I found this trick listed for enabling Tethering on the Galaxy Nexus that works on non-rooted devices.
"Elixer 2
Pros: Free
Cons: Confusing to setup at first
1. Install Elixer2
2. Install Elixer2 Widgets
The way I think this works is, you need to install Elixer2 to give you tons of tools and information about your device, so that the widgets work correctly.
Elixer2 Widgets gives you widget tools to create widgets for your device.
You can create a "Wi-Fi AP (Hotspot) toggle" widget that turns on Portable Wifi Hotspot. Doing this bypasses the wireless carrier check, and allows you to modify your AP settings to create a Hotspot."
I was curious if anyone knows if the Elixer 2 trick works on the AT&T HTC One X too?
Or perhaps someone else has been able to figure out another way since there isn't a root method available yet for the HTC One X.
Tasker widget might be able to do this as well.

You can tether on any device. Just install the right app or root. However, within a few hours to a few months, att will see and give you a warnign to stop tethring. If you continue, they auto-upgrade you to a tethering line. There is no way to go around it.

That is not true that they will eventually detect. I have been using tethering for a while on my iPhone and it hasn't been detected. It all has to do with that you need to make sure to use the right APN.

That's what custom ROM's are for. I don't abuse tethering, I do it occasionally and have never received any type of warning from ATT. Proper custom ROM's remove all kinds of traceable software back to the carriers. (e.g. CM9)

I am very aware that with a custom ROM or even a root app like Wifi Tether that you can easily enable tethering. However, I am trying to find out if there is a solution to get it working if you are not rooted.
Right now there is no custom ROMs or even a root for the AT&T HTC One X so the custom ROMs or even Wifi Tether are not an option. So back to my original question does anyone know if Elixer 2 or Tasker work for enabling tethering on the HTC One X?

I understood that, sorry for side stepping on the topic. I got caught up answering that there is a way around the carrier knowing about your tethering.
I don't know how much similarity between HTC's tethering code and Samsung's tethering code, I tried your apps mentioned above on my Samsung GS2 running latest AT&T ICS leak and it didn't work. It does bypass the account checking but there is no internet connection from the tethered devices what so ever. The new tethering code for these Samsung devices in ICS leaks are much difficult to bypass now than the ones in GB.
We will know it once we have AT&T HOX in hand.
This is the easiest solution that works on all android devices.

I guess its luck of the draw then lol, i tetherd like 300 mb 2 monthes ago and got an att text warning 3 days later.
Just as an update, the Rogers RUU is online now, you can find it in the DEV section. Those who wanna attempt to flash its boot.img and system.img to an AT&T phone, knock yourselves out!
Not saying it's gonna work necessarily...
Easy Tether always worked for me. It uses the Android debugging mode. You need to use USB but whatever. Totally worthwhile (costs about $10 one time fee) and I'm not sure how they would detect this. IF they gave you a hard time you could simply explain that you develop Android apps and that you're not tethering. They may buy that.
When tethering is enabled through the device via normal means, then I think they would know about it...But if you're going through the debugger, I just can't see how they would know.
If they ever did or worse yet, IF any carrier is collecting data about user agents, etc. to see if you're using a desktop browser...Then I think that's a severe privacy concern.
I would hope anyone getting a warning from a carrier would because they have a rooted phone and they have the actual tethering system feature enabled for which the operating system likely sends up some sort of flag to notify the carrier (hence why people are saying it depends on what ROM you're using). OR because of their usage patterns, ie. heavy usage in short periods of time. A phone can only have so many browser tabs open and use so much data in a short period of time. They have this stuff down to a science.
However...If you're tethering to check your e-mail, browse a little, do work, and like me...build web sites and what not from Starbucks (because their free WiFi doesn't allow you to use SSH) then I really can't imagine you'd get an angry letter.
Again, this is all speculation...I use Sprint and never had an issue. However, come Sunday I will be switching to AT&T for the better looking HTC One X...Oh right and for the working 4G. Despite half the storage space.
Elixir 2/Widgets does not work on my ATT HOX for the mobile AP. I still get the "call 611 to enable tethering" popup.
Has anyone tried Foxfi from the market?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
FoxFi does not support wifi for any HTC phones, only Bluetooth (as stated in-app).
Foxfi keeps giving me some cryptic error message "fail to open bluetooth". Being unable to root / tether and downgrade from 32gb to 16gb (and in actuality 9.96 gb) is really pissing me off...
Edit: Easy Tether works. Just using the free version so far, no issues yet. Will know more extensively in the next few days.

[Q] Locked + S-ON + 1.45.0013 = stuck with stock crap?

Hello. Since this is my 1st post as "M4TGS" few words about me: I'm new MT4GS owner and new Android user, coming from WinMo world (been using PocketPCs since WinMo 2003 SE) so if something sounds noobish please forgive me, I haven't had Android phone before (or linux on my PCs).
Please correct me if/where I'm wrong.
My phone is:
LOCKED
S-ON
HBOOT-1.45.0013
with T-Mobile's ROM full of useless junk (I knew that would be the case when I bought it, I had WinMo phones from T-Mo before and they always were loaded with garbage, which I always flashed with modded ROMs, I don't know why I just assumed all Android phones are easy to root and flash shouldve done some reading here first...)
So, after reading a lot of threads here today it seems that:
1 - I cannot change my ROM (due to S-ON and bootloader version that hasn't been cracked yet), is that correct?
2 - I cannot get rid of T-Mobile's junk from my stock rom either, because even if I use the "temp-perma-SuperUser" method, delete the "bloatware" apk, the bootloader will do crc check on next boot and restore them all again, is that correct?
3 - Assuming I understood 1 and 2 correctly, is there a way to stop the "bloatware" from starting at boot? For WinMo 6.x we had few different utilities that basically work on the phone similar to batch scripts on Windows, and a lot of automation could be achieved with those; if there is something like this for Android could it be automated to stop some of the bloatware and remove their shortcuts from menu at every boot?
(i.e. T-Mobile's-specific apps such as "My Account" or "Visual Voicemail", specially the latter bugs me the most because my canadian provider Wind doesn't have Visual voicemail and I can't just tap on "voicemail" without being nagged to enable visual voicemail every time I tap on voicemail in notifications, its so annoying)
4 - How on earth do I make videocalls with this phone and ROM? (yes I searched forum for that and found "Qik" which is not what I'm asking about - I can install i.e. Skype and it'll serve me better than this Qik)
On my last WinMo phone I just tapped the "camera" icon in the phone app and it did videocall using data connection. I can't find anything like it (nor anything pointing to videocall or datacall) on this phone, what am I missing?
Any answers appreciated, TIA!
Well ill just start by saying 1 is wrong so you might want to do some more reading chief, i didnt get through the rest of your post yet just wanted to say your first thought is wrong

Man, seems like same case here, my sonny is bit older than your dottie, but he too lives with his mother... that's my only reason for videocall need in this phone

Yeah hmm maybe find a friend that has a phone with a ffc and video call and see if once you add all the info to the address book it gives you the option to video call. I would say google talk has video call but its trash. Then again you might have to use a 3rd party app like qik, thats what comes stock right

I know exactly what you mean. I came over to this phone about 2 months ago from a Touch Pro 2. Boy the difference is figuring out how to get around the security on it.
Anyway, just use HTC's unlock tool assuming you are on the newest software version. If you're not, then update to the newest. This will allow you to flash custom ROMs. Flash Clockworkmod recovery. Then just flash superuser through it. This will give you root and the ability to delete the bloatware.
You'll still be S-on, but will be able to flash any custom ROM you want, you just have to push the kernel separately through ADB instead of in a nice neat package.
Yes HappyKhicken it seems much more work to customize it than it was with any Windows Mobile. Not that it would discourage me its just an observation.
I'm still reading around, I have just found out about the "wire trick" to make radio S-OFF, so I want to learn as much as possible before I do anything other than hard reset.
Since you also had TP2 can you explain to me how do you make a videocall here?
I can't figure out how to make videocall at all
If you remember in WinMo (well, depending on ROM and dialer canvas version you had of course) when you tap phone there was the icon that looked like one of those old Logitech round webcams, when you tap this icon it switched to "videocall" to the person you were dialing, and if this person didn't have video capability it switch back to "voice". Can't find anything like this here.
Also probably stupid question: is it possible to restore unlocked/s-off phone back to being locked with s-on and full of junk stock rom? (in case I would need to send it back to htc for warranty repair or replacement, I don't have T-Mobile's option with Asurion insurance since I'm not their customer and I'm in Canada)
thx

OK. I bit the bullet, went to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1532809
run the HTC unlock, and now my bootloader says ***UNLOCKED***
(this was easy-peasy, just somehow no one mentioned in htc unlock tool thread - or I didn't notice it - that an account on htcdev is needed, but I made some quick fake email acct and registered there with it, hopefully I won't need it again? I just realized I didn't save any info for these accts lol)
So, next step would be to flash recovery - either CWM or "Stock 1.55" as there are these 2 to choose from at fifth step on HTC Unlock Tool.
What are the difference between these two?
If I flash one of them now, can I flash the other one later?
I'm not going to flash any new ROM yet, I need to get accustomed to Android first, but I would want to get rid of some bloatware and T-Mobile-specific apps that came with stock ROM since I'm not on T-Mobile. I know I need to flash CWM or Stock Recovery to gain root access, but I don't know which one should I choose / what are the major difference / advantages / disadvantages ?

Skype works very well on this phone. I've done videochat with a few friends, one of them using another Android, the other friend on an iPhone 4S. We were using Skype since that is a common software for us. Oh, I forgot, I also did Skype video chat using my MT4GS to another friend in Turkey, he was using his laptop. Great thing about Skype is it works on 4G or Wi-Fi (I have unlimited 4G data so I don't worry about it).

Thanks. Yeah, I installed Skype from Google Play (I think Android Market was better name) and indeed it works great. I think sound quality is way better than Skype for Window Mobile, maybe it is better than 'regular voicecall' too, or so it seems.
But it came to me clear now, and I can't believe it, but despite most of Android 'smartphones' having front cameras, the OS itself doesn't have videocall capability built-in, am I correct?
It's kinda let down if true? because AFAIR even my old TyTN II (thats ancient 2007 model) and every other WinMo smartphone with front camera I had after that also had videocall built-in right there in the dialer
Good god it took me two days to realize I needed to reenable usb debugging after the bootloader unlocked. AJSNFLASKDA

OK... care to explain more, specially that you post the same comment in other thread (so I guess it is either important or spam)...
I'm sure I'm not the only noob to this phone and Android OS in general, so:
Why does the usb port need to be in debug mode and how do I start it if it is necessary?

To do many adb functions the device must be in debug mode.
The usb port itself isn't in debug mode, rather the whole device is.
In a very technical sense, a ROM is not 'polished' or 'finished' if it releases with usb debugging enabled - but I released mine that way because I use it so very often.
The setting is in:
Settings - Applications - Development
Sent from a digital distance.
Thank you Blue6IX for excellent explanation and thenpaxtongoes for the reminder
Now to root my unlocked phone:
volume down + power, to go into hboot, plug in usb, fire up HTC Unlocker Tool and install CWM or Stock recovery, but do I need to change on my phone's hboot menu screen down to Recovery first or do I keep it at default Fastboot to install one of the Recoveries?
Another question is which recovery to install? It seems CWM is the one to go with but what are the advantages/disadvantages of CWM vs Stock 1.55 recovery? TIA
RESURRECTING an old thread
I have just rooted my MT4GS and I want to get rid of some of the stock T-Mo apps.
There was a thread here I read half a year ago with a list of apps that can be safely deleted, but I just spend good 30min trying to find it... I guess it was a post in some unrelated thread or such.
I want all the T-Mobile-specific apps gone (and yes I did backup on SD card with clockwork recovery). :cyclops: Can someone point me in right direction?

What I find the easiest to do is just use something like My Backup Pro or Titanium Backup to "freeze" the things I don't want, usually those things from T-Mobile or HTC that startup in the background but I never use. Like the Group Messaging stuff (there are 3 processes associated with that, I freeze all 3), the SWM-C process, T-Mobile ID (a caller-ID type thing you have to pay for). Yes, they still take up storage space but that is negligible, by freezing them they no longer are taking up processing/battery time.

[Q] Verizon Tethering/rooting

Ok so i've been looking around here and i've seen people say the best tethering app is WiFi tether. But heres my question, On my x2 i was required to change my radio card settings. Change some numbers around and such. This allowed me to stealth tether, I'm wondering if this WiFi tether app is trackable?
And about rooting, All i'm seeing for vzw rooting is what seems to be flashing the "stock rom" that is rooted and not rooting your current system. So am i going to lose my data and have to start over? And is this something thats being worked on? Because with my x2 it was a 1 click root and it didn't change anything on my phone besides adding the root. My phone stayed on the stock rom with nothing being changed. Just kinda wondering, i haven't taken the time to look threw roms so i'm not sure what i want to run on this phone yet. But tethering is a must for me
Thanks in advance

I just installed the rooted stock rom over my default non-rooted install and everything has worked fine with no data loss. I did that mostly because I don't know how to format my phone through Odin. What I did exactly to get root.
As for wifi tether what I did was install the version of the app from the Play Store and then set my phone profile to the Galaxy Nexus. I used the version that was available from the code site in my Thunderbolt before and I have not been "caught" yet. So I would say you're good to go. While I haven't tried it with encryption, I did try to see if my Thunderbolt could connect to my Galaxy S III. It did and after a quick speed test I knew everything was working well (got a 101ms ping with 5mbps down and ~1mbps up).

ok sounds good. So then one more thing i guess. If the wifi tether isn't trackable how do they "catch" people doing it? is it downloading speeds or what? because if they have no real way i'm just going to use my tether on my x2 to download the needed files for rooting the s3 lol
*edit*
also is there an irc channel for the verizon phone and such? and i saw something about "not tripping the flash counter" what does that mean? lol
ok so rooting is done all looks good. Hoping the stealth of this tethering is good lol. Now to wait for a good rom
Can use stock hotspot app
You can also use the stock hotspot app.
Folks have been reporting that if you use a 3rd party launcher widget like this one Tether Widget the the stock hotspot apps works without checking to see if your paying for the "feature".
I've tested this my self and it works fine.
