Root

Ok so I'm wanting to root my inspire. What all do I need to do this? I dl'ed bubbys dl. How do I back my phone up? All my contacts and pics? Lost them once, not wanting to do that again. Titanium backup, do I need it? Paid or free version? Bare with me here, this is my first Android. Been an iPhone user since they came out but it seems its a lot easier to hack them then it is my inspire. I searched around but didn't really see any answers. Thanks in advance

Personally, I'd recommend attn1's Ace Hack Kit over Bubby's, since you'll need it if you ever want to go back to stock s-on, and it has some functionality that bubby's doesn't. I know for backing stuff up, Dropbox works really well. I use that for pics/vids AND contacts (menu>export>move to dropbox folder). I don't think that's the best way to do contacts, but I have never lost one. Titanium Backup is more for apps, but aside from saving you the effort of reconfiguring apps that have logins/preferences or whatever, there isn't much benefit over just reinstalling them from the market.

And can I use a Mac to root with attn1 way?

#1: The videos are outdated, but "The Effen Manual" that attn1 includes is as easy to follow as it gets.
#2: I don't know, I don't use a Mac, but if you read his thread, I'm sure someone has answered that question.

Yeah I just googled attn1 and saw that he had said the vids are out dated and to read the manual. Also there is a link for osx so ill try that. If it don't work ill just run to best buy and pick up a netbook lol

I don't know that it's necessarily true that you can't go back to S-On if you use bubbys tool to root.
I'm pretty sure there's been instances of people doing it, though it may be that you have to use the hack kit at that point.

Once you use bubby's you can go back to stock. But yes you do have to use the hack kit to do so. Both give you the same s-off. Bubby's just pushes the commands to your phone in the background instead of you doing it yourself.

I just used bubby's this morning, have never rooted before and it was rather easy and didn't take too long.
I had to do it twice, however, bc it wouldn't find the SID, stating something about my HTC drivers, so I used a market app to get the code. (Excuse my lack of terminology knowledge!!)
Although I should have, I didn't back up everything; only my images (which I just dropped to my desktop); after successful root everything was gone so I went through the settings "wizard" and made sure to log into HTC and within a few hours my contacts and messages were back.
I didn't want my apps back, so not sure how you back that up.
So I had all the stock apps plus ROM manager and superuser.
Now off to play around some more

the only problem i have with rooting my phone is actually downloading the hack kit or bubby's one click method. i've turned off all the right things but still nothing. any advice?

I still didn't root, sorta backed out last night haha. Wouldn't know why I would need to go back to stock once rooted but I guess all is possible. I don't really care about losing my apps, ill just redownload then, its just my pictures and contacts I'm worried about losing. I think I'm going to use bubbys root tonight and see what happens. Thanks for the info. Also there are a bunch of apps I don't use on the phone is there a way to freeze them after root besides getting titanium backup pro? Or does that seem like the best way?

Plus I have a 2gb sdcard. Should I use this one for gold card? And do I need a mobile terminal app for root? If so which one?

If you set your contacts to be backed up on google, they will automatically reload for you.
Your pictures should now be on your SD card. If you are going to use that same SD card to make your gold card, then it will indeed need to be formatted and you'd lose whatever is on there, of course. All you have to do is plug the phone in to your computer, mount as disk drive, and make a folder on your computer, and copy the SD cards contents (or just the pictures, if you want) to your hard drive.
When your done, you can put it all back.
The only thing you will lose unavoidably is any app-specific data that you would need to have root to back up (game scores, etc.)
Once rooted even this data will be able to be accessed from that point forward... You won't even lose that, again... Its just the initial act of gaining root, that you're faced with a one-time loss of specific data.
Nearly everything else can be backed up "in the cloud" via Google or moved someplace else by you temporarily.

Bubbys one click on the phone at a point and when you get the error are you sure you have the sync drivers I selected the sync option on the usb connection manager.them switched back after .. I had to do it twice but good know

As long as your contacts are Google based and/or you have your phone set to "backup your settings on Google," you shouldnt have to worry about contacts.
If you aren't sure log in to the full gmail in a browser and check to see if your contacts are visible there. If they are, you're good.
I haven't even thought about my contacts over the span of 4 Android phones, several roots, and a couple of custom Rom flashes... They just magically re-appear... Thanks to Google.

Even though I am new to this forum, I rooted my Inspire 4g using Ace-Hack-Kit v9 without a clue to what it was actually doing in each step. Needless to say, it was very discomforting at a thought of bricking my phone. But since then, I have been through turning off the eng-s then going back to stock again to turn back the eng-s again using the v9. Now, since I know what each step of the v9 is doing, I am more comfortable using it then the newer automated v10 or the v11 (if it ain't broke, why change). And, I hate to repeat above post, but I have tried no less than 7 roms since the root. And thanks to the Google’s backup option, other than the saved games and such, all of my apps and the contact information were automatically reinstalled through wifi within an hour of connection (I did have to import my outlook contact into Gmail account first). So I never bother with a backup especially I really don't have anything on this phone to miss (didn't have the phone long enough).

Impossible to root

I think my phone is impossible to root. I can never use the format tool that came with the simpleGoldCard I have done it with HP format I can never get CID so I have come to a conclusion my phone is impossible to root

I just have no idead what i am missing. i have watched buddys 1 click video and think i am doing it like he says but nope does not work. I might try the other way but it seems a little more in depth but we will see.

I used a new two gig Sandisk card and formatted it in my phone, then used the Gold Card Maker, and then used the Ace hack kit picking up on number two in the menu. This downgraded the rom and then you just forward thru setup and enable debugging again and run number three in the menu. This gives you root and s-off. Then you repeat enable debugging and go to the options menu and flash the stock radio. Once it reboots, you are ready to place your renamed rom on the root of the sd card and restart in bootloader and flash away. Don't forget to disconnect the usb cable after moving the rom to the sd card. After reboot you are home free. If you flash a custom rom, you may need to flash a new radio. The key is having a good gold card, turning off antivirus, and remembering to put the phone on charge only and enabling debugging before each step.

I've rooted my father in laws inspire but now I cant root mine, Im not a total noob with Android but its not working for some reason I guess ill try to find another sd to try it with

Yes, I made one for mine. Thanks for all the help guys it wasnt me being a noob it was the sd card not working, i tried a different one and it worked, thanks for all the help again guys.

Right on, sometimes the obvious questions just don't get asked.

Use hack kit tool v11 and read the effenmanual. You will root your phone.

Reading stuff like this makes me ever more genuinely glad I don't care to root my Inspire. In my case I know that if it can mess up it will mess up. But the whole process seems so convoluted and messy. Using a "Goldcard" seems like a burden to me...like you have to carry around addition weight with you wherever you go just to have a rooted phone. It all seems so super-duper messy. That's the biggest turn-off for me...like I would be trying to make something work unnaturally...like this is something that isn't designed for the device...stuff like that. By the way, I know someone will misunderstand what I meant by "weight" so I will preempt them by saying I know there is no "weight"...lol

Im just trying to use the wifi hotspot without getting charged on my already unlimited data plan, do i even need to root to do that? besides i just wanna have it rooted but it keeps failing. ive done it like 4 times.

From what I've read in the past, AT&T detects tethering on rooted phones and will charge the specific account for the cost of the feature.

BTW the goldcard is not needed once you're done rooting. I haven't had a goldcard in my phone for months - it's the oiriginal 8GB that I keep it in my desk drawer should I ever need it again. Using a regular 32GB card now.
Rooting's not that hard but there is a small hurdle at first, but the rewards make it worthwhile. Some people prefer stock, some people like to tweak until the cows come home.

You can set up an apn that allows hotspot without a tethering plan.

Tethering is usually free on rooted phones.
I'm pretty sure that AT&T doesn't do deep packet inspection on their traffic yet, so you should be able to easily get away with tethering as long as you don't have significantly higher data usage than usual.

Hello, can someone help me with something. I rooted my htc inspire a few months back. I did not change the room just left it as is. I am now trying to tethering my accer a500 to my htc inspire. I have tried the hot spot and also tried to hook cable to tablet from phone. when i try hot spot it turns on then turns off says i need to call att.
I am wondering do i have to flash phone with a differnet rom inorder to use those functions. or is their a way around the issue. Sorry for my lack of knowing lol. i am looking but I have not found a newbie guid covering this. I am asuming i do need to flash phone with custom rom but wanted to make sure.

I guess should of added more info. I have rooted my phone a long while back. I did not flash a custom Rom to my phone. I am running the Rom the phone came with just rooted. Thanks again for any help someone will be able to give. I am still reading the fourms just guess not understanding. From what I am getting if I want hot spot to work or tethering to work I need to flash my phone with a custom Rom.

a 30second search of putting 'free tether htc inspire' into google would have given you the answer you need. This has been asked over and over and over. You are technically breaching your agreement and if you get caught that is on you. Here is a link in the market for a simple to use app. Next time please search before making threads.

Update, followed your link and it went no were. Google free tethering again and came up with the same thing. Someone saying they have a way to make it work. Then a bunch of posts after that with people saying it worked for a bit but not now. I'm just looking to see if it can be done, what has and has not worked and if I am right and I need a custom Rom.

I use EasyTether Pro, don't know if its safe, but I have been using it for almost 2 years on 2 different phones, and haven't been stuck with a higher bill yet

Was wondering do you guys use the cable, or set up a WiFi way. I don't plan on doing any downloading I use a program that looks up info for me on the net. Maybe some Facebook on the night ****. Once again thanks for the help with this very cool.

I dont have to DD an app to use hotspot because my dev built it in, which most roms do... but if you must stick with your stock rom... (thumbs down)
I used "open garden" wifi tether on a few different phones requiring that functionality. Its one of the best out there IMHO
P.S. If you like the stock feel and stability? of your stock rom, but are ready to open your phone up to a brand new life...
My suggestion for a jump off point(ROM) is 'COREDROID'! I dont rock it anymore, but it was imo the best, next very close runner up would be 'AndroidRevolution'...
Both of those have built in hotspot, plus a WAYYY faster UI than stock. Just My Opinion. good luck!

I have never tried to tether using stock rom, however almost all custom roms I have used have the ability to tether. Maybe try a custom rom, I like IceColdSandwich v 4.2. Good luck!

Thank u very much that was what I was really looking for. I will start looking for custom Rom that might work for me. I really need to learn how to back up the Rom I have so I can save it so I can flash it back to phone if need be. Thanks again all for all the help with this.

Start by looking for a recovery like "cwm recovery"... within the Inspire forums. Follow the directions exactly and read them ALL first, then reread them before flashing. Once youve achieved a recovery, you'll have opened yourself up to try ROMS i.e.Try coredroid for a few days then perform a backup of coredroid, then flash AR and run that for a few days.
As it seems in your OP, youre kinda used to a stock ROM and both of those are based on stock, with enhancements, and bloatware removed... MUCH FASTER and responsive.
So just start with one thing at a time - Recovery Time!!!
p.s. once youve installed your recovery, you should backup your current config before going to the next step - ROM!!! Practice good backup skills, and you'll limit your headaches considerably.

I am looking for the info and what app to use to get the best back up file. i want to be sure I know how to back up and also how to go back to the back up if need be before I move forward. as for backup between ROMs the two major ones are Titanium Backup and MyBackup

I went to my local store yesterday and had a rep examine my phone to be sure there was no way I could tether. She noted it in my account. Today I got a txt msg saying I was tethering. So I called the 866 number in the msg and the phone rep told me they can now tell any time a computer or any other device is plugged into the phone and any time a tethering app is used. So according to her logic, we can't even use our computers to charge our phones.

no, she means they can detect the tethering. not the connection itself. u can still charge and xfer files and sync lol

*I* know that. But she apparently doesn't. She told me that ANY time ANYTHING is plugged into the phone now counts as tethering. Even if NO apps are being used. I know better than to believe that lol.

This seems a good place to ask. Of course, the ref with whom I spoke claims that their system is flawless, but is there anyone here who kows AT&Ts systems that can speak as to the reliability of their inspection system?
The reason I ask, I was informed that "the data connection from your phone was opened to another device several times within the past 2 months." I used it once, I'm afraid that something looks like tethering to their system, and I'll end up with a more expensive capped plan rather than my unlimited plan (truth is that I've only gone over 3 GB once of which I'm aware, I just don't like the concept of caps.... or more cost).

I finaly put a custom rom on my phone and was able to hotspot and tether my phone to my laptop. Only used it to load one page of xda just to see if it worked or not. I never got a text meassage or phone call or anything. I also use a bunch of bandwidth on a daily bases. e-mail, web games and such. I had to re-lock my phone sending it to htc to get repaired, when i get it back it will be re rooted and custom rom and tethered again. Will let you know what happens then. lol

They will constantly improve the system. the more people that find ways around it the more they will invest in closing the holes. they didnt used to have the ability to see but more and more is pointing to packet inspection and TTL's on them to see if theres another device behind the phone. it's not just an apn setting anymore. it's best either to not tether and breach contract or just pay the $15 a month and use it. Getting around it now, could change next week or a month or tomorrow. companies will do what they can to protect their services from being taken advantage of, and with the number of users that are stealing tethering data, that is a considerable cost. do i think its fair that i need to pay $15 to connect my pc to phone for just a picture here and there, no, but the consumer always wants everything for free.

Ok so i've been looking around here and i've seen people say the best tethering app is WiFi tether. But heres my question, On my x2 i was required to change my radio card settings. Change some numbers around and such. This allowed me to stealth tether, I'm wondering if this WiFi tether app is trackable?
And about rooting, All i'm seeing for vzw rooting is what seems to be flashing the "stock rom" that is rooted and not rooting your current system. So am i going to lose my data and have to start over? And is this something thats being worked on? Because with my x2 it was a 1 click root and it didn't change anything on my phone besides adding the root. My phone stayed on the stock rom with nothing being changed. Just kinda wondering, i haven't taken the time to look threw roms so i'm not sure what i want to run on this phone yet. But tethering is a must for me

I just installed the rooted stock rom over my default non-rooted install and everything has worked fine with no data loss. I did that mostly because I don't know how to format my phone through Odin. What I did exactly to get root.
As for wifi tether what I did was install the version of the app from the Play Store and then set my phone profile to the Galaxy Nexus. I used the version that was available from the code site in my Thunderbolt before and I have not been "caught" yet. So I would say you're good to go. While I haven't tried it with encryption, I did try to see if my Thunderbolt could connect to my Galaxy S III. It did and after a quick speed test I knew everything was working well (got a 101ms ping with 5mbps down and ~1mbps up).

No wifi tether is not trackable and flashing a root stock rom in odin wont wipe data. Click link in sig for instructions.

ok sounds good. So then one more thing i guess. If the wifi tether isn't trackable how do they "catch" people doing it? is it downloading speeds or what? because if they have no real way i'm just going to use my tether on my x2 to download the needed files for rooting the s3 lol

Folks have been reporting that if you use a 3rd party launcher widget like this one Tether Widget the the stock hotspot apps works without checking to see if your paying for the "feature".

nothing against this, and i will look into it, but i'm looking for stealth tethering. This is my home internet, so i'm using a good 20gigs a month

Ok so new issue, i can not turn off cmda, i am in evdo only mode but i still get text messages and that cuts off my data for tethering while it receives :/ anyone know what to do?

[Q] Rooted stock One MIni - Free hotspot?

Ok, I hate to post this, but I can't seem to find any posts on this. I have My HTC 1 mini rooted with cwm recovery flashed. I want to use my phone as a hotspot (without paying At&t) without flashing a custom rom. I like the stock rom and don't have any reason to flash cyanogen or anything else available. So,.... Can anyone help or direct me in the right place to get rid of the At&t big brother crap so I can use my phone as a hotspot for free?

I'm in the same boat as you, except I'm not even using the phone on AT&T, I'm thinking of updating to the international 4.3 release, however my wife doesn't want to lose all her settings and have to restore everything just to be able to use this feature.....
You can always use a 3rd party app such as tether (doesn't do wifi i dont think..) however i beleive the wifi ones are pay apps

I'm in the same boat as you, except I'm not even using the phone on AT&T, I'm thinking of updating to the international 4.3 release, however my wife doesn't want to lose all her settings and have to restore everything just to be able to use this feature.....
You can always use a 3rd party app such as tether (doesn't do wifi i dont think..) however i beleive the wifi ones are pay apps

Tethering sux. Especially when using my tablet or when trying to have someone else connect. I used it all the time with my pos LG nitro HD. The phone is capable of doing it just not without [email protected] punk butts trying to charge for it. There has to be a software/app that be removed or something simple. I just don't want to remove something wrong and have to flash my back up. Pain the the u know. Pdanet was the best Coe tethering in my experience btw. I hate wires.

S-off
So I'm gathering that S-off has to be done in order to get free wifi with stock rom. in this tutorial http://htconeroot.com/htc-one-tutorials/how-to-get-s-off-on-htc-one/ I was able to get S-off. In the tutorial it states you have to disable fastboot. I tired it twice and it failed. I then enabled fastboot through the power menu at the bottom, and it worked like a charm. I had to enable fastboot to root my One mini as well. Both tutorials expressed that fastboot had to be disabled. Not in my case. So,... (at your own risk) if you have have problem with rooting and getting S-off, enable fastboot. Not I need to find out what all factory installed apps I can remove without bricking my phone. If anyone knows all or at least some of the apps/bloatware, please list.

That's a great question. I believe that if you root the device (and possibly S-off) then you can use any hotspot app for free. I'm using this on the T-mobile network and cannot find a work-around without Root. I plan to root one day, but have just been too busy to sit down and go through all the steps.

I rooted, I got S-off and still no free wifi hotspot. Furthermore, Whenever It root uninstalled all those AT&T app, when I rebooted they would be back. I tried every root uninstaller on the play sotre with a four start rating or better. I wanted JB 4.3 and sense 5.5 so I got that S. I copied that resolution below. Now I have free wifi. Thanx though.
I used the script SuperWipe_M4_xpirt.zip to completely clean my Phone because after I copied to my pc then deleted all my titanium back up media and DCIM my sdcard only had 1.4gb in on it. On the device all those files still showed under my legacy and /0 folder and I found a third under storage in the device. This is something funky. So after the SuperWipre Script from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2423576 I then flashed 4.3 sense 5.5 from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2575766 and now I have 11 gb on my phone. I will pay more attention to my storage when installing and changing things so I can see what, where, and/or how that happened. I have never encountered something like this before, nevertheless, i have never settle for a phone without external storage either. I wont ever do that again. But for a free phone plus a $56 credit to my account, I can't complain too much. Just a little. The One Mini is way better than the crappy lame POS LG Nitro HD .
