Rooting with Mac Snow Leopard - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have not only searched this forum, but have searched everywhere that I could think of for an answer. I finally decided to root and unlock my bootloader. My biggest problem is this:
1. My Mac is running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). The required Java files that you have to download only work with 10.7 (Lion) and higher. I have not been able to find a work around for this yet. I prefer to use this method with Adam's Casuals software.
2. I also have a virtual machine with Windows 7. I finally got all of the drivers installed and tried Noxious Ninja's method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342 and that program just runs through without doing anything. I have verified that all files and drivers are installed and that the phone is actually connected to my virtual machine.
I really don't want to give Apple another penny of my money or I would go buy Lion upgrade. I also don't support pirating, so, that option is off of the table as well even though we are talking about the greediest, most evil company out there. I am seriously debating on selling my MacBook Pro and getting a PC at this point.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Apple is really greedy because their upgrades are $20 compared to $100 + windows upgrades. They are kinda greedy but its the same way bill gates got rich. Anyways i would just say update to Mtn Lion. Only $20 and works good. Rooted my phone with Casual on Mtn Lion.

I was running leopard and was able to root and unlock my bootloader by using Adam outlers root tool. I found it on Droid Life. I searched these forums but couldn't find the threads location. I deleted the email with the link but if I find it I'll post it. Search for Adams unlock tool because I rooted using the same program
Found the link I used
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/08/15/unsecure-bootloader-can-now-be-flashed-to-verizons-galaxy-s3/#more-79368

Thanks, I will try it when I get back home

Okay, I tried this and can't seem to get it to work either. It loads up fine but does not connect so I don't have the option to do anything else. I have checked and made sure that nothing else is running between the phone and computer. I was using Android File Transfer which was working very good, but turned it off and still no go. That lets me know that I do at least have a good connection between the Mac and S3.
Does anyone know of anything that I can try?

Nobody else has run into this problem? I have spent the better part of last night and this morning and still have not been able to find an answer. I just can't figure out why Android File Transfer will work perfectly and the Casual program will not even connect. I even double checked to make sure that my computer was up to date with software updates. The only thing that isn't up to date is obviously I am running Snow Leopard instead of Mountain Lion.

Is USB Debugging on in Developer Options and using the OEM USB cable?

Yes, my daughter came by with her PC and I rooted it without any issues. I would still like to know why I couldn't get those issues resolved.
Now, back to reading so I can back up my IMEI and figure out which ROM to flash! I am also thinking of flashing the newer radio to see if reception improves.

Glad you got it working, I would recommend Paranoid Android Rom for Stock it runs the smoothest i think and you have the option of using tablet mode.

I ran into the same problem you ran into with Casual not seeing my phone but that was on Lion on my MBP. My iMac running Snow Leopard worked fine without any problems. I asked Adam about this and he said its an issue with the Apple hardware, some see the phones and some don't, it's hit or miss luckily for me one of my systems recognized the phone.
= sent from my Unlocked VZW S3 =

Okay, I found out the issue. Hopefully this will help someone else that has the same problem. The problem came from Easy Tether. I found a page after all of the digging that worked for me (couldn't get adb to work right either) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6026948/cant-find-android-device-using-adb-devices-command is the page that tells you how to disable it so that adb can communicate with it. I just backed up my IMEI with abd and am feeling pretty good!

rooting with a Mac

OK, total noob here. I have been reading and going over att1's hack-ace kit and feel confident I can get it done. Tried the hack last night and the program cannot find my phone. I am guessing this is a usb driver problem but I cannot find any usb driver updates for the mac.
Any hints on how to get the phone to play with a mac and the run this hack?
I did a search and there are two others who posted the same problem and their solution was to reboot the phone. Tried that 3 times and it did not solve the problem for me.
any hints?
thanks in advance~
I didn't have any problems so I can't say for sure (also used Mac after getting half way through on windows and got stuck). Try going through the guide and see if you downloaded everything needed. I'd just start from square one and go from there.

Using Linux
Hey, I had problems with windows and Mac. But I found myself a Linux DVD, and everything worked out just fine in Linux. No drivers needed!
ahhhh
for all you macbook users out there, you must have OS 10.5 or higher to use ace hack kit. My phone was not recognized by the hack due to my OS, 10.4.11. Instead of paying slackintosh the 190 bucks they wanted to upgrade me to 10.5, then 10.6, I loaded Ubuntu and ran the hack from there.
Can't relay how easy this hack was. Follow the steps, read the effen manual, and it will work perfectly. Thanks to attn1 and the rest of the folks who developed that and for your support this morning on IRC.
Cheers~
Did you reboot the phone while still tethered? I had serious problems trying to get mine to show up too. Finally installed parallels and rooted in parallels on windows.
Mac Terminal Password Issue
I finally used the Advanced Ace Hack Kit yesterday and rooted my Inspire 4G yesterday for the first time. I read the effin manual over and over and over. I got to the terminal, typed in the shell, and kept getting asked for a password. For those that password protect their Mac, you will need to put your Mac password here. It is not asking for the Cajun.txt passkey. I spent 20 plus minutes trying to figure this out. I found the information on my 100th search. As soon as I figured it out, the root worked perfectly. No problems. Just trying to pass on the information for those that had the same problems.
And thank you to the people that developed this rooting. It was just as easy as jailbreaking an iPhone.

[Q] Need help fixing my Infuse, more info inside

Alright, so, to get started, I am actually decently tech savvy, and I wish i had rooted my phone before I even tried following the crap that samsung put up, but heres how it went.
I have a Samsung Infuse 4G on the ATT network
I finally found out how to update to Gingerbread through Kies. I spent all night charging my phone, went to Kies, and started the upgrade. About 6% through the upgrade, it said it needed an emergency recovery. I was worried, and I followed all instructions. I let the emergency recovery page sit for a day, and all it did was sit at 6% the whole time, so I resorted to my next best option, rooting it.
I have tried Ultimate Unbrick, One Click Unbrick, and Hiemdall, though I didn't get extensive with Hiemdall.
One Click said it was successful, but my phone doesn't turn on, so I tried the emergency recovery again, and still sat at 6%, then it switched to that it couldn't fix it.
Ultimate Unbrick starts off well, seeming as it is doing soemthing, but then freezes at factoryfs.rfs. Mind you I am running it in compatability mode for XP SP2 as an administrator, and I have run it on Win7 as an admin as well.
Hiemdall I got a little confused, so Im going to try that again.
Im gonna have to say, Im done with Samsung after this phone. Ive had samsung phones for 10 years (not by choice, im 19 and my mom pays for it), and every time something stupid happens, its like they kill themselves on purpose.
Is anyone possibly able to help me get my phone back to working condition? I wont be able to get a new phone for about a month, and thats only if I can find a job, which is hard when I have no phone.
Thank you to anyone who can help.
Does your phone display anything on its screen at all? If so, there's still hope.
Have you installed drivers properly?
Make sure that anything related to Kies is killed on your computer's task manager.
Try using different USB ports.
As much as possible, use a Windows XP. I had the same "stuck at factoryfs.rfs" problem and I tried it at an XP and it worked.
If nothing works, try buying a jig off of e-bay. They're about a dollar or two. Invest in some.
If it's completely borked, time to go buy an S3.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
I can get into download mode where it shows the android shoveling in a caution sign
I installed the drivers
I havent checked that kies thing yet, Ill do that now
Ill try another USB port and get back to ya on that part
I don't own any computers with windows XP. Only a Win7 and a crappy laptop with Ubuntu on it (the laptop is crappy, not ubuntu)
Im so broke a candybar looks like rich food
And Im done with Samsung after this, Ill prob go windows phone and hack the Android market onto it.
LMAO Idk I still like Samsung over HTC and Apple. It can get really complicated --yes -- but it's worth.
Also, make sure to restart computer and then do the things I suggested you to do.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Im aiming for Nokia.
So, I disabled kies
Restarted my computer
Tried a different USB port
restarted Odin
Reran everything
and now, it wont even get to factoryfs.rfs
Do you possibly have a link to Hiemdall thats the newest version?
You should restart before disabling Kies. This is because of the fact that when you restart, your computer re-runs Kies.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
I disabled after I restarted as well. Sorry, my steps were out of order.
Hmmm that's odd. Try it on a different computer tomorrow. Possibly a friend's?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Im gonna try heimdall first and see if I can contact a friend tomorrow. I just moved and my friends out here are more busy than the other ones I used to live by.
Heimdall Link.
Try fresh installation remove drivers from Driver Manger, run the drivers again and use Heimdall package. you need to have latest java and it need to be run as application not in any of the zip/jar file opener like 7zip etc., right click and you will see run using java<your version >
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
it is clearly explained on the link what to do,
If you found difficult you can read the thread to see some probable answers as well.
Hope it will solve your query.

Don't often have access to a PC, what should I do?

So I'm rooted, bootloader unlocked, and running the latest Synergy nightly (r46). I, and most of my friends, all have Mac computers (gasp! I know...), but for the next day or so I'm at my parents' house, where I'll have access to a PC. I've already backed up my NV/IMEI data, that was the first thing I wanted to do. My question is, is there anything else, PC-specific that I should do while I'm here? Is it worth updating the baseband or anything like that? I know anything Odin related will need to be done on a PC. I don't have any GPS issues that plague some people on custom ROMs. Anyway, just wondering if there is anything I should take advantage of while I'm around a PC. TIA!

To answer your question, if you already have your status info backed up as you say, then radio upgrade is the only thing I can think of.
You need to ge tyourself a dual boot computer not to worry about this issue. Dump the Mac, supporting Apple is supporting terrorism.
Take one of your old computers (doesn't everyone have one?) with windows XP or any other windows. If you don't have one, spend $200 to get a nice refurbished laptop from Dell Ebay store
http://stores.ebay.com/Dell-Financial/_i.html?_fsub=3&_sc=1&_sop=1
Once you have it, Install Ubuntu side by side the windows OS. Use crappy Windows for ODIN only work, and Ubuntu for everything else. Become a superstar

[Q] Need help rooting VZW S3 after new jelly bean update 4.1.1 12/14/12 on a MAC

Hey everyone
I've been looking everywhere on how to root the s3 after the new ota update on a mac. Alot of the instructions seem to be geared towards pc users and i want to make sure i do it right and dont brick my phone (crucial for work). Reason i want to root it is to finally have google wallet which i also need help with on installing, i dont mind if its an old version of GW. Also i want to get rid of the wifi notification and add the wifi button to the top of the notification bar. And finally im going on vacation on 1/2/13 and would like to unlock my s3 for use overseas on an international network.

Ive been trying for a month now to get this Mac issue going but with no success. I rooted using the Casual method (only works on 4.0.4) and since then my phone has been a horror show. I stayed on Stock for a week with Root and had the worst battery and random reboots ever. I then did a clean flash of Synergy and every other day was a horror show for me. I gave it a good week to settle but was still getting major heating of the phone and bad battery. I did delete the Blobs folder as per a guide that i read and i noticed a little but of a difference. I went back to stock via the Mobile Odin method and it worked great. I now did the OTA and now have stock 4.1.1 and have been looking around to re-root and start all over. I only did the OTA because i feel its going to be some time before a Mac guide will be available. I have had great success with rooting and tinkering with every Rom that came out for my Incredible since it was first launched until 2 months ago when i finally upgraded. So no im not that much of a noob lol.. Everything is geared for PC which in a developers sight blows my mind that both platforms are not supported yet given that this phone has been out for a good amount of time. I did take someones advise and downloaded a trail version of Parallels which will allow you to use the PC method on your Mac. I do not want to pay the full $80 to be able to freely use Odin on my phone so i am also hoping that someone figures this out. There should be a guide for PC ROOT and Mac ROOT. Try Parallels 14 day trial. I was able to get it to work on my Mac and its pretty easy to install. Im going to give it a few days on Stock just to make sure that my battery wasnt the real issue that i was having. I think that maybe the Casual method did something to mess up my phone. Not sure how cause it is such an easy method. Hope this helps.

i dont want to get win 7 and i dont know what vm stands for, i guess im more of a noob than i thought lol but a rooted jb rom with gw on it would be nice, i need help with mac, ppl cmon!!!
I was trying the root/unlock procedure for TWJB this week on my Macbook Pro and gave up and used my Windows 7 desktop instead. The key to the problem here is that you need to be able to flash a few things in odin mode. While there is Heimdall for the Mac and Linux, the current (binary/stable) releases don't support the SGS3 US variants, so it's a dead end. Maybe one of these years I'll get un-lazy and try compiling the 1.4 alpha from source (which purports to support our devices), but since I had a Windows machine handy anyway, I went the path of least resistance.
If someone out there has successfully used Heimdall with a Verizon SGS3, please let us know. I'd still like the ability to do this on my Mac.

S3 straight talk verison rooting/general questions.

okay, I just bought this phone 2 days ago. really different from a windows phone. im getting use to it... but, ive been doing research on here on how to root it. after an hour I found one. much help is really appreciated! (im gonna sound really noobish when I say this)
how can you tell if your usb debugging is on, on your phone?
I literally went through every options on settings, looking through the booklet and nothing.
if its possible id like to root it without hooking it up to a computer?
I use to have older droids, and I could download apps and root it on the phone those were the days :good::good:
ROMS
I tried to rom a ascend y straight talk phone it ended up broke. I tried it with 3 different ascend y phones. any guide for that for the s3 or with my experience just leave it alone and don't touch it?
the keyboard
is it just me or is the keyboard slow when you type for texting? it cant keep up with me....all my other phones could and the Ram memory is very low too....it very's from 300MB-450MB out of 1.5GB.
is their a good way to make my signal stronger?
I live out in the boonies and every network I have had...it got great signal except Verizon...the most I get is 2 bars mostly just 1 very annoying....(when I had the ascend Y Verizon phone I found a way to boost my signal and I literally got 3-4 bars out where I lived until I tried to flash it with a rom "oopps my bad")

P.S.
I don't know if its locked or unlocked (bootloader)
Checking if USB Debugging is available is just a matter of going to Settings > Developer Options and then looking for a tick mark checked near the option that reads "USB Debugging."
Unfortunately, I cannot speak for root on the Straighttalk SIII being as that I do not own the device (rather I own the Verizon variant). However, a quick forum search might turn up some results...
EDIT: It appears that there is something called "Cydia Impactor" that takes advantage of a couple bugs found in previous versions of android. According to other threads with talk about it, it seems that it works in general for gaining root. Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47412631&postcount=7. Note: Do install a superuser manager on your device right after obtaining root (assuming you gain it) as you don't want everything to have root access!
As for ROMs, what I stated above holds true for these as well. In theory, with an unlocked bootloader (if you have one), then flashing roms is only a matter of checking compatibility with your phone. But I'll save the details about that for now...
The stock keyboard didn't work out for me either. However on Google Play, you can download more keyboards that may prove to be more convenient for you!
As for signal strength, I am currently unaware of any way to actually boost it... However, I do agree that the signal strength I get on my SIII is slightly weaker compared some of the other phones on the market out there, but with a call to Verizon, you may be able to get a signal booster.
Hope that helps

about the bootloader how can I tell if its locked or unlocked? if its locked how can I unlock it?

Last night it was storming in st.louis large hail, heavy rain, thunder and lighting etc....well I was having a deep conversation with someone and the power was off/my battery only had 30% left and the last thing she said was "I don't want you to go " then I tried sending a kik message back and it wouldn't send or anything....I tried calling someone and hears what the guy said auto message "your phone as been deactivated" I was like "WEEEEELL aint this funny and very convenient" so I was gonna go to walmart then it started hailing again and I got pelted by penny sized hail...dude they may seem small but they hurt like heck! :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Do NOT try to unlock your phone as it WILL hard brick! I am saying this from personal experience. You will have to spend $50 for a JTAG repair.

Hmm, upon some searching, I found something called "Framaroot" that one can install on a phone (it's an app) in hopes of achieving root access. It supposedly executes various exploits to get SuperSu and the su binary loaded. Anyways, while our S3s are not exactly listed as compatible, the author does mention that if the phone share a similar processor, it may be compatible.

For rooting the sch-s968c samsung galaxy s3 from straight talk, and everything on roms this is the link you want. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516498
Cydiaimpactor method does work. that is how I rooted mine. Works great. I haven't played with roms yet because I have not found the need. But these guys over at that link are playing around finding out what works and what does not.
As far as rooting without the computer I have not seen a way yet. But the cydiaimpactor method takes 4 to 5 seconds, and is very very simple.
There is not a lot more info I can give you because there is not a lot of info in the rooting world about the sch-s968c. If you find anything please share!

He doesn't have access to a computer so he is trying to find a way to root using a apk

Hope ya get it rooted. You could try poot also.. Need no computer and it claims to root all/most QualCom devices. Just know that anything could happen while modding the phone and if stuff were to go down it would take a computer to recover if you did hit worse case.
Impactor is by far the quickest easiest way if you know what you are doing and have access to a PC. However if no access to PC try framaroot as suggested. Go to the framaroot thread here on xda and look for the download link in first post. If you read the first post it tells you the newest version out, always read first instead of expecting to be spoonfed or just jumping in this unprepared. Install the app on your phone and run it. If it fails then you need to find a computer to use Impactor
Hope this helps!

Okay again sorry for double posting, this app is messing up on me and won't let me edit my status for some odd reason but, anyway. I downloaded poor and minstro II. AFTER every thing downloaded it couldn't find a path. I tried it 10 times or more. Same answer every time :banghead:
