rooting with a Mac - HTC Inspire 4G

OK, total noob here. I have been reading and going over att1's hack-ace kit and feel confident I can get it done. Tried the hack last night and the program cannot find my phone. I am guessing this is a usb driver problem but I cannot find any usb driver updates for the mac.
Any hints on how to get the phone to play with a mac and the run this hack?
I did a search and there are two others who posted the same problem and their solution was to reboot the phone. Tried that 3 times and it did not solve the problem for me.
any hints?
thanks in advance~

I didn't have any problems so I can't say for sure (also used Mac after getting half way through on windows and got stuck). Try going through the guide and see if you downloaded everything needed. I'd just start from square one and go from there.

Using Linux
Hey, I had problems with windows and Mac. But I found myself a Linux DVD, and everything worked out just fine in Linux. No drivers needed!

ahhhh
for all you macbook users out there, you must have OS 10.5 or higher to use ace hack kit. My phone was not recognized by the hack due to my OS, 10.4.11. Instead of paying slackintosh the 190 bucks they wanted to upgrade me to 10.5, then 10.6, I loaded Ubuntu and ran the hack from there.
Can't relay how easy this hack was. Follow the steps, read the effen manual, and it will work perfectly. Thanks to attn1 and the rest of the folks who developed that and for your support this morning on IRC.
Cheers~

Did you reboot the phone while still tethered? I had serious problems trying to get mine to show up too. Finally installed parallels and rooted in parallels on windows.

Mac Terminal Password Issue
I finally used the Advanced Ace Hack Kit yesterday and rooted my Inspire 4G yesterday for the first time. I read the effin manual over and over and over. I got to the terminal, typed in the shell, and kept getting asked for a password. For those that password protect their Mac, you will need to put your Mac password here. It is not asking for the Cajun.txt passkey. I spent 20 plus minutes trying to figure this out. I found the information on my 100th search. As soon as I figured it out, the root worked perfectly. No problems. Just trying to pass on the information for those that had the same problems.
And thank you to the people that developed this rooting. It was just as easy as jailbreaking an iPhone.

[Q] One Click Inspire4G root by Bubby323 not running

Hi Guys,
Just bought my first Android Phone, the Inspire 4G and I love it. I wanted to root the device using Bubby323's Oneclick root, but the app won't launch in my Win7 laptop with 3GB of RAM. The error message states the following:
D:\>3-21-11_RC2.exe
Program too big to fit in memory
Question is, how much RAM does the app need? Are there workarounds to this? I am not sure If I have access to any more machines that have more RAM. Are there any alternatives to this method of rooting that is easy to understand (this is my first droid phone so I don't want to take any unnecessary risks).
Thanks a bunch!
Have you tried running it as an administrator? If I remember correctly it can give some weird problems if you don't.
Sent through the power of Cthulhu.
yup. I ran cmd with administrative rights. Did a right-click, run as admin, still same results. I saw the video tutorial and the guy said he was running a machine with 8GB of RAM. I don't have a more powerful machine at the moment so scratch that
Not sure what's going on. My sisters laptop has 3gb and ran it just fine.
But personally I recommend attn1 hack kit. Its even easier. Just make sure you read the manual and have the prereques done ie HTC drivers antivirus off or better yet uninstalled during the process
No hay de queso no mas de papa
Thanks a lot, at least I know someone with the same specs ran it fine. I'll re-download the file and hope for the best. Might take me a while as my connection is uber-slow
I would actually recommend Ace's Hack Kit. It is an easy 1, 2, 3 process. I rooted my phone with no problems with his method. And he provides a way to go back to stock if needed. With Buddy's you cannot go back to Stock as easily.

[Q] [i9020A] How best to root an AT&T Nexus S, on a Mac

I bought an AT&T Nexus S today, replacing my Captivate. (Hooray for working GPS! It's sad I even have to say that.)
I also primarily use a Macbook Pro. For the Galaxy S phones there was a wonderful one click root tool, which worked for Mac OS X as well, I can't seem to find a similar tool for the Nexus S.
I've looked through the forum, and in the stickies there is a root guide for the i9020A but it appears PC focused, and seems fairly involved, it as 41 steps across 4 parts. (I've not messed around much with the Android SDK before.)
There is as well a Mac root guide, but it was written in January, for 2.3.1, and the i9020T...
It links to the Superboot method, by MoDaCo, which seems a great deal easier, and supports Mac OS X... but I'm entirely unsure whether there is a build of that for the i9020A.
In short (after I've already made you read long), I've read a pretty good deal about the subject, but I still feel rather lost. What's the easiest method of rooting my Nexus S, preferably with support for Mac OS X, though that isn't a deal breaker, I can always borrow a friend's laptop if the rooting process is manageable.
And thank everyone for their time.
Just rooted mine about an hour ago and followed this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970237
I had no problems whatsoever... pretty quick and easy. At the part where it has you look for the file to rename, you can probably skip that part... I didn't see the file and I'm able to reboot into Clockwork.
Thank you r3p00c, that was exactly what I needed. Rooted within the hour, fantastic.
was your att nexus s on 2.3.4??

Rooting with Mac Snow Leopard

I have not only searched this forum, but have searched everywhere that I could think of for an answer. I finally decided to root and unlock my bootloader. My biggest problem is this:
1. My Mac is running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). The required Java files that you have to download only work with 10.7 (Lion) and higher. I have not been able to find a work around for this yet. I prefer to use this method with Adam's Casuals software.
2. I also have a virtual machine with Windows 7. I finally got all of the drivers installed and tried Noxious Ninja's method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342 and that program just runs through without doing anything. I have verified that all files and drivers are installed and that the phone is actually connected to my virtual machine.
I really don't want to give Apple another penny of my money or I would go buy Lion upgrade. I also don't support pirating, so, that option is off of the table as well even though we are talking about the greediest, most evil company out there. I am seriously debating on selling my MacBook Pro and getting a PC at this point.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Apple is really greedy because their upgrades are $20 compared to $100 + windows upgrades. They are kinda greedy but its the same way bill gates got rich. Anyways i would just say update to Mtn Lion. Only $20 and works good. Rooted my phone with Casual on Mtn Lion.
I was running leopard and was able to root and unlock my bootloader by using Adam outlers root tool. I found it on Droid Life. I searched these forums but couldn't find the threads location. I deleted the email with the link but if I find it I'll post it. Search for Adams unlock tool because I rooted using the same program
Found the link I used

Okay, I tried this and can't seem to get it to work either. It loads up fine but does not connect so I don't have the option to do anything else. I have checked and made sure that nothing else is running between the phone and computer. I was using Android File Transfer which was working very good, but turned it off and still no go. That lets me know that I do at least have a good connection between the Mac and S3.
Does anyone know of anything that I can try?
Nobody else has run into this problem? I have spent the better part of last night and this morning and still have not been able to find an answer. I just can't figure out why Android File Transfer will work perfectly and the Casual program will not even connect. I even double checked to make sure that my computer was up to date with software updates. The only thing that isn't up to date is obviously I am running Snow Leopard instead of Mountain Lion.

Is USB Debugging on in Developer Options and using the OEM USB cable?
Yes, my daughter came by with her PC and I rooted it without any issues. I would still like to know why I couldn't get those issues resolved.
Now, back to reading so I can back up my IMEI and figure out which ROM to flash! I am also thinking of flashing the newer radio to see if reception improves.

Glad you got it working, I would recommend Paranoid Android Rom for Stock it runs the smoothest i think and you have the option of using tablet mode.
I ran into the same problem you ran into with Casual not seeing my phone but that was on Lion on my MBP. My iMac running Snow Leopard worked fine without any problems. I asked Adam about this and he said its an issue with the Apple hardware, some see the phones and some don't, it's hit or miss luckily for me one of my systems recognized the phone.
= sent from my Unlocked VZW S3 =
Okay, I found out the issue. Hopefully this will help someone else that has the same problem. The problem came from Easy Tether. I found a page after all of the digging that worked for me (couldn't get adb to work right either) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6026948/cant-find-android-device-using-adb-devices-command is the page that tells you how to disable it so that adb can communicate with it. I just backed up my IMEI with abd and am feeling pretty good!

Reason i want to root it is to finally have google wallet which i also need help with on installing, i dont mind if its an old version of GW. Also i want to get rid of the wifi notification and add the wifi button to the top of the notification bar. Ive been trying for a month now to get this Mac issue going but with no success. I rooted using the Casual method (only works on 4.0.4) and since then my phone has been a horror show. I stayed on Stock for a week with Root and had the worst battery and random reboots ever. I then did a clean flash of Synergy and every other day was a horror show for me. I gave it a good week to settle but was still getting major heating of the phone and bad battery. I did delete the Blobs folder as per a guide that i read and i noticed a little but of a difference. I went back to stock via the Mobile Odin method and it worked great. I now did the OTA and now have stock 4.1.1 and have been looking around to re-root and start all over. I only did the OTA because i feel its going to be some time before a Mac guide will be available. I have had great success with rooting and tinkering with every Rom that came out for my Incredible since it was first launched until 2 months ago when i finally upgraded. So no im not that much of a noob lol.. Everything is geared for PC which in a developers sight blows my mind that both platforms are not supported yet given that this phone has been out for a good amount of time. I did take someones advise and downloaded a trail version of Parallels which will allow you to use the PC method on your Mac. I do not want to pay the full $80 to be able to freely use Odin on my phone so i am also hoping that someone figures this out. There should be a guide for PC ROOT and Mac ROOT. Try Parallels 14 day trial. I was able to get it to work on my Mac and its pretty easy to install. Im going to give it a few days on Stock just to make sure that my battery wasnt the real issue that i was having. I think that maybe the Casual method did something to mess up my phone. Not sure how cause it is such an easy method. Hope this helps.

i dont want to get win 7 and i dont know what vm stands for, i guess im more of a noob than i thought lol but a rooted jb rom with gw on it would be nice, i need help with mac, ppl cmon!!!
I was trying the root/unlock procedure for TWJB this week on my Macbook Pro and gave up and used my Windows 7 desktop instead. The key to the problem here is that you need to be able to flash a few things in odin mode. While there is Heimdall for the Mac and Linux, the current (binary/stable) releases don't support the SGS3 US variants, so it's a dead end. Maybe one of these years I'll get un-lazy and try compiling the 1.4 alpha from source (which purports to support our devices), but since I had a Windows machine handy anyway, I went the path of least resistance.
If someone out there has successfully used Heimdall with a Verizon SGS3, please let us know. I'd still like the ability to do this on my Mac.

[Q] Rooting question: Manual versus AAH Kit

Just a question as it pertains to rooting methods.
I just bought a used HTC Inspire 4G to play around with and regarding rooting methods almost every search through any forum inevitably leads to the AHH Kit. I've rooted and flashed a few phones (Samsung's and Motorola's) using my primary Linux distro, SDK commands/terminal manual root methods with no bricks or other issues (I avoid Windows as much as possible). It may seem a bit more involved but I really don't trust a cure all one click method everyone seems to jump on and then subsequently have to pour through all the pages of trouble shooting post click, so to speak.
My question is, has anyone else used the method as described in RootWiki? See link >> http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/HTC_Inspire_4G
Is it really just a matter of preference? Manual vs click?
I'm just not a big fan of "I don't know how it works, I just clicka on da button and if it does work "praise Jesus it's a miracle!" Even if a little more complicated as least I get what's happening via manual methods. Is that just me? Hopefully there's a good manual method.
Wouldnt know, I rooted mine using AAHK and Ubuntu over 8 months ago. Im sure things have evolved to root the Inspire, but hey what ever works to get your phone rooted is all that matters.

This is simple. If you use the Rootzwiki method, you will scr#w your bootloader miserably and will be begging for someone to help you fix it. The only working method is the Hack Kit and it is not exactly one click. It does all the job of course but you need to interact and follow commands.
Unfortunately, there are a lots of out of date threads that have never been updated. Flashing a froyo RUU or Hboot in a GB shipped device, will mess the bootloader and put it to work in super slow motion. Your phone will take about 10-15 minutes just to boot.
Besides, the Hack Kit does not only root your device but also gains S-OFF and superCID, which is what you really want to have complete control of your device.
Hope this helps you to take the decision...:good:
I rooted my HTC Inspire 4G with AAHK within one week of getting it, and it was literally the first time I had so much as touched an Android phone. I'm an experienced developer and comfortable with learning new technologies, but I think anyone with a modicum of tech aptitude can make the AAHK work if you follow the instructions and read every word of the Effin Manual. And there's always the AAHK chat room as well if you run into trouble. If you don't read the Effin Manual, you'll probably get kick-banned, but otherwise you can get some really excellent help there.
So given that you've rooted a couple phones before, I think AAHK would work very well for you. But if you want to learn more of the internals of rooting, while taking on a bit more work and associated risk, then the manual method may make more sense. Also I highly recommend you use Ubuntu liveCD if you root with AAHK. Ninety percent of the problems seem to come from Windows stuff running in the background.
AAHK toolkit
I recommend using the AAHK toolkit, it's so much easier to use.
AAHK is retired as of this morning anyway.
